How does (MRCC) Mazda Radar Cruise Control work?

Mazda Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational automaker, manufacturing cars since 1920. The brand is consistently improving active safety technologies in its cars. The Mazda radar cruise control is such a technology that safely maintains cruise speed, taking into account the road traffic.

MRCC in action

In addition, the system uses a millimetre wave radar to judge the speed of the vehicle at the front. At the same time, it also measures the distance from the car ahead. The system then processes this information and automatically controls the vehicle speed.

Furthermore, the system ensures occupants safety by maintaining the set distance with the car ahead. It also reduces the stress on the driver during highway cruising. The system also works well during slow traffic movement.

Mazda radar cruise control automatically adjusts the vehicle speed in accordance with the car ahead. If the vehicle in the front stops, then the system also stops the vehicle keeping the safe distance from the car ahead. Specifically, during long drives it reduces driver fatigue.

Furthermore, the MRCC also comes with Distance Recognition Support System (DRSS). The DRSS visually displays the following distance to the driver. So, the driver can act fast in emergency situations.

How MRCC works?

The Mazda Radar Cruise Control comes with ‘stop and go’ function. The MRCC automatically maintains a safe distance from the vehicle at the front. The radar located at the front of the car continuously monitors and scan the upcoming road.

The system automatically maintains the set cruise speed on its own. When your car approaches slower vehicles, MRCC automatically adjusts the speed of your car. Then it maintains the safe following distance from the car at the front.

Furthermore, the driver can adjust the distance from the car at the front by pressing buttons on the steering wheel . When you change lane or vehicle in the front moves aside, MRCC automatically returns your car to the original cruise speed.

In case, the vehicle in front completely stops, the Mazda radar cruise control automatically brings your vehicle to a complete halt. In order to avoid a collision, the system also alerts the driver for rapid braking . When the vehicle in the front moves away the system alerts you. Once the driver taps or presses the accelerator slightly, the system will automatically accelerate to the preset speed.

Furthermore, the stop and go function is particularly helpful in stop and go traffic. In heavy traffic, the driver can relax and can simply avoid the repetitive action of accelerating and deaccelerating.

In conclusion, Mazda radar cruise control (MRCC) adds to occupants safety. The system is also helpful during highway cruising as it avoids stressful situations and avoids fatigue while driving.

HOW IT WORKS:DRIVING POSITION

HOW IT WORKS:DRIVING POSITION

MAZDA engineers studied the human body to design the perfect driving position. In a MAZDA you’re seated so that your muscles are relaxed but ready to react and positioned so that your line of sight gives you a good view of the road ahead.

G-VECTORING CONTROL

G-VECTORING CONTROL

By subtly controlling engine torque as you turn into a corner, a small forward weight transfer occurs, allowing the tire to give its optimal performance. The car responds intuitively to the first steering input and negotiates the corner smoothly without corrections, making the driver and passengers feel safe.

CRASH PROTECTION

CRASH PROTECTION

SOMETIMES ACCIDENTS ARE UNAVOIDABLE. THAT’S WHERE MAZDA’S INDUSTRY-LEADING CRASH PROTECTION COMES INTO ITS OWN TO HELP KEEP YOU SAFE.

SKYACTIV-VEHICLE ARCHITECTURE

SKYACTIV-VEHICLE ARCHITECTURE

MAZDA cars are strong and lightweight. By using materials such as high tensile steel in areas of the body structure, engineers ensure that the car absorbs impact energy without adding extra weight.

MULTIPLE SRS* AIRBAGS

Airbags have long been a crucial part of crash protection. MAZDA uses driver and passenger airbags, plus multiple airbags to protect all occupants. *Supplemental Restraint System

EXTRA EYES ON THE ROAD

EXTRA EYES ON THE ROAD

MAZDA vehicles are designed for all-round visibility, and also come equipped with a number of ingenious electronic systems, such as a 360-Degree View Monitor, to help drivers see clearly.

SMART BRAKE SUPPORT

SMART BRAKE SUPPORT

MAZDA’s Smart Brake Support uses a front camera and milliwave radar. If the system detects an imminent crash, it will ready the brakes to apply maximum stopping power. If the driver doesn’t react, it automatically hits the brakes and reduces engine power to reduce the impact.

ACCELERATION CONTROL

ACCELERATION CONTROL

For cars fitted with automatic transmissions, MAZDA’s Acceleration Control system uses a camera and sonar sensors to detect obstacles, and prevents the driver from accidentally accelerating into them from a standstill.

Mazda 6 Owners Manual: Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) (Some models)

The Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system is designed to maintain headway control*1 according to the vehicle speed using a radar sensor (front) to detect the distance to a vehicle ahead, and by presetting the vehicle speed between 30 km/h (19 mph) and 145 km/h (90 mph), the driver is freed from having to constantly use the accelerator or brake pedals.

*1 Headway Control: Control of the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead detected by the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system.

Additionally, if your vehicle starts closing in on the vehicle ahead because, for example, the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly, a warning sound and a warning indication in the display are activated simultaneously to alert you to maintain a sufficient distance between the vehicles.

Use the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system on expressways and other highways which do not require a lot of repeated acceleration and deceleration.

The Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system is designed to reduce load on the driver, and although it maintains a constant vehicle speed, or specifically, it maintains a constant distance between your vehicle and the detected vehicle ahead according to the vehicle speed, the system has detection limitations depending on the type of vehicle ahead and its conditions, the weather conditions, and the road conditions. Additionally, the system may be unable to decelerate sufficiently to avoid hitting the vehicle ahead if the vehicle ahead applies the brakes suddenly or another vehicle cuts into the driving lane, which could result in an accident. Always verify the safety of the surrounding area and depress the brake pedal or accelerator pedal while keeping a safer distance from vehicles ahead or on-coming vehicles.

  • Roads with sharp curves and where vehicle traffic is heavy and there is insufficient space between vehicles. Roads where frequent and repetitive acceleration and deceleration occur (Driving under these conditions using the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system is not possible).
  • When entering and exiting interchanges, service areas, and parking areas of highways (If you exit a highway while headway control is in use, the vehicle ahead will no longer be tracked and your vehicle may accelerate to the set speed).
  • Slippery roads such as ice or snow-bound roads (The tires could spin causing you to lose vehicle control).
  • Long descending slopes (to maintain distance between vehicles, the system automatically and continuously applies the brakes which could result in the loss of brake power).

If the vehicle is towed or you are towing something, switch the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system off to prevent an incorrect operation.

  • The vehicle speed is about 30 km/h (19 mph) to 145 km/h (90 mph).
  • The Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system is turned on.
  • The parking brake is not applied.
  • The Smart Brake Support (SBS) is not malfunctioning.
  • The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is operating normally.
  • The selector lever is in the drive (D) position or manual (M) position (manual mode).
  • All doors are closed.
  • The driver's seat belt is fastened.
  • You are driving at the same speed as the vehicle ahead.
  • Directly after the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system has been set.
  • When the accelerator pedal is depressed or directly after the accelerator pedal is released.
  • Another vehicle cuts into the driving lane.
  • Vehicles approaching in the opposite direction
  • Pedestrians
  • Stationary objects (stopped vehicles, obstructions)
  • If a vehicle ahead is traveling at an extremely low speed, the system may not detect it correctly.
  • During headway control travel, do not set the system on two-wheeled vehicles such as motorcycles and bicycles.
  • Do not use the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system under conditions in which the close proximity warnings are frequently activated.
  • During headway control travel, the system accelerates and decelerates your vehicle in conjunction with the speed of the vehicle ahead. However, if it is necessary to accelerate for a lane change or if the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly causing you to close in on the vehicle rapidly, accelerate using the accelerator pedal or decelerate using the brake pedal depending on the conditions.
  • While the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system is in use, it does not cancel even if the selector lever is operated and any intended engine braking will not occur. If deceleration is required, lower the vehicle speed setting or depress the brake pedal.
  • The brake lights are illuminated while the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) automatic braking is operating.
  • The headway control operation can be canceled and the system can be switched to only cruise control. Refer to Cruise Control Function.

Adding Mazda Radar Cruise Control

mazda 6 radar cruise control

  • Add to quote

Hey all, Can I purchase and add the Mazda Radar Cruise Control to my 2017 Touring? It does have front and rear parking sensors, as well as the side mirror sensors for lane changing. Thanks in advance!

I don't think this can be added aftermarket. The required long-range radar is built into the front Mazda emblem. Also, even if you somehow managed to install it, it would probably need costly calibration from a shop or dealership with the right equipment.(Although, that may just be needed for things like LKA, FCW, and AEB) Who knows how entangled the Adaptive Cruise Control is with other systems and their respective control units, such as the software, brakes, and accelerator. It'd be cheaper with way less hassle to buy another car with it already factory installed.

I asked regarding a 2014 Mazda 6 GT (without the tech package), and wanted to add radar cruise control from the tech package. The dealers here all said it wouldn't be worth it. They have to tear the dash apart to do re-routing of new cables, and have a new steering wheel with buttons. The labor itself would be many thousands of dollars. Have to agree with @TechZeke , much less hassle to buy another car with MRCC from the factory.

Did Mazda even manufacture a Manual transmission with this feature?

mazda 6 radar cruise control

My 17 3GT does...

I'd hate to know what it would cost to accomplish this. I'm sure anything is possible, but the sensors / control systems / computers / infrastructure / brake systems are all involved and core systems in the car. IMO if you really want it you're far better trading in for another one equipped to your desired spec.

it can be done , has been done here in Malaysia , but as mentioned it's not plug and play in anyway , you have to match serial numbers , new wiring, new steering buttons and dealer support to calibrate the radar and still it throws a code at start up

mazda 6 radar cruise control

Louis here from Malaysia. Where you get the MRCC done? I'm think to install for CX-8.

I guess the saying that anything is possible applies, but it seems that it's not worth the effort in this case. Thanks for the help!

I think "cost prohibitive" would be the correct moniker. In other words, trade up to the model that has it and taking a bath on the potential loan issues might be cheaper in the long run.

mazda 6 radar cruise control

I have done this - you need radar with mounting, new emblem, new steering switches and then need to modify asbuilt data. I got radar from junkyard and installing-coding-calibration I made it myself Mazda 6 2017

Hai all, Im from Indonesia and I need to retrofit my Mazda 6 estate 2019. Since Indonesia Mazda 6 are not equipped with MRCC in all trim. Any body can help me? Thanks before

The 3 forums have good documentation on this, also did you read the parts list in post #11?

Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC)

How to use the mazda radar cruise control (mrcc).

MRCC operation conditions

The MRCC can be set when all of the following conditions are met.

(Manual transmission vehicle)

The brake pedal is not depressed.

The vehicle speed is about 30 km/h (19 mph) to 145 km/h (90 mph).

The clutch pedal is not depressed.

(Automatic transmission vehicle)

The vehicle speed is about 0 km/h (0 mph) to 145 km/h (90 mph).

Setting the MRCC

Press the MRCC switch to turn the system on.

mazda 6 radar cruise control

Accelerate to the desired speed.

Set the vehicle speed by pressing the RES switch up (SET+) or down (SET-).

mazda 6 radar cruise control

If a vehicle ahead is detected while traveling at a constant speed, the system switches to headway control. The vehicle ahead indication is displayed on the screen while in headway control.

Vehicle ahead indication

If there is a structure on the road or an obstruction at a low height off the ground in front of the vehicle, the system may recognize it as a vehicle ahead.

Acceleration and deceleration by accelerator pedal operation takes priority while traveling at a constant speed or in headway control. When the accelerator pedal is released, the vehicle returns to driving at a constant speed or headway control at the set speed.

If a vehicle ahead is traveling at an extremely low speed, the system may not detect it correctly.

While driving using the MRCC, intended engine braking is not applied even if the selector lever/shift lever is operated.

The brake lights turn on while the brakes are operating by the MRCC control.

The MRCC is also turned off automatically when the vehicle power is switched OFF.

If the distance between vehicles control is disabled using Mazda Connect, the system switches to the cruise control. At this time, the MRCC switch functions as the cruise control switch.

Set in the Mazda Connect “Settings” or consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

If the vehicle power is switched OFF while the distance between vehicles control is disabled, the distance between vehicles control is enabled automatically the next time the vehicle power is switched ON.

mazda 6 radar cruise control

The shift-up or shift-down request display might be displayed while the MRCC is operating. When this occurs, shift gears because the gear position is not appropriate.

The MRCC may be canceled automatically if the shift up/shift down is not done even when the shift up/shift down request display is indicated. In addition, the engine may be damaged or the engine may stall.

Changing the set vehicle speed

Changing the set vehicle speed using the RES switch

Press the RES switch up (SET+) or down (SET-) to the desired speed.

Press and release immediately: 1 km/h (1 mph)

Press and hold: 10 km/h (5 mph)

Changing the set vehicle speed using the accelerator pedal

Depress the accelerator pedal until the vehicle speed reaches the desired speed, then press the RES switch up (SET+) or down (SET-).

Reading the set vehicle speed from the speed limit sign using the RES switch (Speed Limit Assist only)

mazda 6 radar cruise control

The function which recognizes speed limit signs has limitations. Always check the set vehicle speed that was read.

Set the speedometer display unit to the same unit as the speed limit sign. Differing units will capture speeds not intended by the driver.

The Speed Limit Assist operates only when the navigation system's SD card is inserted.

The Speed Limit Assist uses the Traffic Sign Recognition system (TSR).

Refer to Traffic Sign Recognition System (TSR) (Search) .

The Speed Limit Assist cannot read speeds of less than 30 km/h (19 mph).

Set vehicle speeds read from speed limit signs can be adjusted.

The Speed Limit Assist can be turned off.

Setting the distance-between-vehicles during headway control

Press the CNCL switch up (longer distance) or down (shorter distance).

mazda 6 radar cruise control

MRCC is not operating (white)

MRCC is operating (green)

The distance-between-vehicles can be set to 4 levels: Long, medium, short, and extremely short distance.

The distance-between-vehicles differs depending on the vehicle speed, and the slower the vehicle speed, the shorter the distance.

Close proximity warning

If your vehicle approaches a vehicle ahead while in headway control, a warning sound and a display cautions you.

mazda 6 radar cruise control

“Depress Brake Pedal”

The close proximity warning may not be activated in the following cases.

The vehicle is driven at the same speed as the vehicle ahead.

Directly after the MRCC is set.

Immediately after the accelerator pedal is released.

Another vehicle cuts into the driving lane.

Do not use the MRCC under conditions in which the close proximity warnings are frequently activated.

The MRCC is canceled temporarily

If any of the following conditions is met, the MRCC is canceled temporarily.

The brake pedal is depressed.

The CNCL switch is pressed one time.

The DSC has operated.

The Smart Brake Support (SBS) has operated.

The front radar sensors cannot detect target objects.

The parking brake is applied.

Any door is opened.

The driver’s seat belt is unfastened.

The frequency of the braking operation by the MRCC is high.

The vehicle is stopped by MRCC-controlled braking.

The vehicle speed decreases to less than 25 km/h (16 mph).

The clutch pedal is depressed for a certain period of time.

The shift lever is shifted to neutral (N) for a certain period of time.

If the MRCC is temporarily canceled, it will resume operation at the previously set speed by pressing the RES switch.

Turning off the MRCC

Press the MRCC switch.

I just drove 2,000 miles where the i-eloop warning came on first each morning and cruise control worked the entire day. Today the FOW light came on before the i-eloop warning.

  14. Cruise Control

The cruise main indication (white) is displayed. Accelerate to the desired speed, which must be more than 25 km/h (16 mph). Set the cruise control by pressing the SET/ switch at the desired speed. The cruise control is set at the moment the SET/ switch is pressed. Release the accelerator pedal simultaneously.

  15. Adding Mazda Radar Cruise Control

  16. Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC)

The vehicle is driven on a steep slope. A two-wheeled vehicle such as a motorcycle or bicycle is traveling ahead. Switch the MRCC off when it is not being used. Leaving the MRCC on when it is not in use is dangerous as it could operate unexpectedly, resulting in an accident. Do not leave the vehicle while the vehicle is stopped by the MRCC control.

  17. Cruise Control

The cruise main indication (white) turns on. Accelerate to the desired speed, which must be more than 25 km/h (16 mph). Set the cruise control by pressing the SET/ switch at the desired speed. The cruise control is set at the moment the SET/ switch is pressed. Release the accelerator pedal simultaneously.

  18. Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC)
