Catalina Island Eco Tours Provide Natural Fun

Catalina Island Eco Tours

Popular Eco Tours

The Jeep Eco Tour is a program departing from the Catalina Island Conservancy House. It takes visitors into the “rugged” parts of the island. This refers to the interior sections of the island as well as the seaward side. Your Jeep adventure can travel for two of three hours. Because of their rough nature, many travelers think of these Jeep excursions as mini-safaris.

The “ Cape Canyon Expedition ” and the “ East End Adventure ” are eco tours offered through Tour Catalina . These feature riding in a unique open-air “Green” Hummer. This vehicle actually runs on recycled vegetable oil from local restaurants. Above all, the tours are fascinating journeys and both offer an opportunity to encounter the island’s world famous bison.

Catalina Island Eco Tours are fun for the entire family

Catalina Island Tours

Journey Catalina Tours are another option with three different tours offered. The most popular is the 2 and half hour “Bison Jeep Eco Tour”. The trip features a stop at the Airport in the Sky and a visit to the Nature Center. Visitors will also enjoy the drive through Rancho Escondido with views of the Rusack Vineyard.

The tour continues to the backside of the island with views of Little Harbor and Shark Harbor. There is even an Eagle Sanctuary along the way to add to the journey. And don’t forget, as with all of the inland Catalina Island Eco Tours, there is the chance to see the world-famous bison!

The Catalina Zip Line Eco Tour is an example of a popular eco tour. Your adventure begins as you travel through Descanso Canyon from 5 zip line stations. You eventually make your way to Descanso Beach. The tour lasts about two hours and will be one of your most treasured Catalina Island eco tour adventure memories. You will have fun on Eco tours because you get to experience the rough terrain. Most noteworthy, your hosts give presentations on historical and cultural facts about the island.

If you are traveling to Catalina Island, why not arrange to take an eco tour before you head back home? An eco tour provides more than just scenery. It is an adventure in learning and one that will benefit you as well as the beautiful island of Catalina.

HALVY IS AWESOME! full of knowledge, charisma and care for catalina my family had a blast

Photo of John S.

I've been to Catalina numerous times. This was one of the best experiences thanks to Andrew our Ridgeline Eco Adventure tour guide aka MANIAC DRIVER! His knowledge of not only the Island, but surrounding areas was awesome. Don't get me started on his personality...he's doing what he was born to do and I'm not just saying that either. Although we didn't see any bison (only bison scat haha), we got to see gorgeous views and we had amazing weather. I would definitely recommend this tour and try your best to get Andrew as your tour guide, he will not disappoint you.

Photo of Roll N.

This review is for the glass bottom boat. I would definitely RSVP as the tour seems to be sold out for each outing especially if there is a cruise ship that is docked. There's a Catalina Tour kiosk where you can check in to get your tickets. We lined up 15 mins before our start time and we were the last to board, which was fine because there are a ton of space. It was a pleasant 40 min ride, but I would limit your expectations on the variety of fishes to see. The fishes do go in a frenzy when the captain feeds them, but after about 20 minutes my kid was getting restless since the fishes were all the same. Overall, I would do this once and it's a nice break for the day to just sit and relax.

The family and I went on the Ridgetop Tour this morning with Halvy as our tour guide. He seemed extremely knowledgeable about the island and the entire history and made the tour so much fun. This guy had a great sense of humor which is right up my alley. Even one of our kids was still a little woozy from the ferry ride over from the mainland and even he would get some chuckles in here and there. During certain points of the tour, he would allow us to get out and take pictures of the scenery and the city of Avalon and also when we seen a couple of bison near the end of the tour, he stopped so we could get a few snapshots of those guys as well.

Halvy was an amazing tour guide! From the beginning to end, his words and energy were so captivating and positive! We had such a great time. His driving was also so effortless and we felt safe the whole time.

Took the Ridge top Hummer tour and it was nothing short of amazing!!! Breath taking views of the island, two hours well spent The driver/guide Andrew was probably the best part though. He was kind, funny, and full of island knowledge. Hands down the best tour I've ever been on and a must do while on Catalina Island!

We did the buffalo tour, it was an over cast day with rain so we didn't get the sites, but our tour guide Ron made up for it! His commentary and knowledge of the island made it amazing, and we did see a buffalo. As a whole it was great and we will return another time and will find Ron!

We decided at the last minute after seeing some ads for it, to take the Catalina Island Bison Tour and we were very glad we did! Not only do you get to see deep into the heart of the island and learn about its history, the ride on the converted hummer vehicle was really an adventure in itself. Our guide was filled with lots of fun facts and humor and the tour was well paced. We did get to see some bison from a distance even though they stress that it isn't guaranteed.

Loved my experience with this company. Went on 2 tours on August 1st of this year: Bison tour (9 AM) and the Underwater expedition. I cannot even choose which one was my favorite because both were unforgettable. We chose the 9 AM time because we were told there are higher chances to see bison early in the morning during summer and I am glad we did it! We saw the larger herd: about 40-50 bison who walked very very close to the road. Our driver was Stephen and big thanks to him: he was a very good driver, told us a lot about the island's history and fauna, and just made our day better in general with his outgoing personality. It was worth the 4 AM wake up and 6 AM ferry for the bison viewing alone. The Underwater expedition was breathtaking: the boat was the right size with a window at each seat which made the experience so much better. The captain/tour guide explained what fish we saw and fed them so they do not go too far from the boat. Definitely worth booking!

32 Best Things To Do with Kids on Catalina Island

C atalina Island offers a quick getaway that will make you second guess if you left California and somehow found yourself on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Easily done in a day trip or longer if your family prefers, Catalina Island is reachable by an hour-long boat ride (or slightly longer, depending on the port you depart) from Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point.

There are endless activities for kids on Catalina Island, from glass-bottom boat tours to bison expeditions and just playing in the sand at the beach. Plenty of entertainment and activities will keep little ones and grown-ups happy for a day or a weekend trip on Catalina Island.

When departing from Long Beach, check out these things to do in Long Beach with kids . If islands are your thing, drive up the coast to explore Channel Islands National Park with the family, and plan your next adventure with our Weekend Getaway Guide and Day Trips for Los Angeles Families .

Getting to Catalina Island

The  Catalina Express  runs its catamaran-style ferry a few times daily from Long Beach, San Pedro, and Dana Point to Avalon on Catalina Island, as well as the more rustic port at Two Harbors. If you're not a fan of rocky waters, sit on the top exterior seats to lessen the wave impact you might feel on the ride over.

Visitors can take a day trip or stay at a hotel or campground; the  Catalina Island Visitor Center is a good place to start if you're looking for accommodation or organized tours while on the island. But to piece together just a few highlights to create a memorable day on Catalina Island, read below for kid favorites to choose for your island adventure.

Biofuel Hummer Tours

Explore catalina island on an off road adventure.

Enjoy spectacular views of the coastline while you spot beautiful wildflowers (seasonal) and search for bison!

Ridgetop Eco Adventure

Climb in to our unique, open-air, biofuel H1 Hummer for an unforgettable trip to the summit above Avalon. Traveling to 1,500 feet above sea level, you’ll enjoy a birds-eye view of romantic Catalina Island and the ocean beyond. This tour travels five miles up rugged interior terrain, where you will experience spectacular views of the coastline and deep canyons below. Lined by beautiful eucalyptus trees, the tour winds its way back along the Summit Road into Avalon.

Bison Expedition

Climb aboard an open-air biofuel Hummer and go in search of American bison on this exciting expedition into Catalina’s rugged interior. Catalina’s American bison, sometimes referred to as buffalo, are descendants of a small herd left on the island by a movie crew in the 1920s. While you keep your eyes peeled for Catalina's American bison grazing on the hillsides, your guide will share interesting facts about Catalina's history, flora and fauna as you journey through historic Middle Ranch and up rugged Cape Canyon to a scenic overlook on Black Jack Mountain.

The Best Hotels on Catalina Island

Stay at these editor-loved properties on Catalina Island.

catalina island eco tours

Courtesy of Hotel Metropole

Californians really do have it made. Not only do they get to experience all that magnificent weather, but they also have easy access to Catalina, a gorgeous, Mediterranean-like island less than an hour away. No passport required.

In Catalina, travelers can explore rolling hills, jaw-dropping beaches, visit bars and restaurants right on the shore, and dive into crystal-clear waters that will make you feel more like you're swimming off the shores of a Greek island than California.

The two main points of interest in Catalina are Two Harbors, located on the island's west end, and Avalon, the more prominent of the two towns. Travelers can easily take a shoreline ferry between the two or drive, if they choose. We suggest staying in Avalon, as it's a bit more bustling, offering access to more tour operators, restaurants, bars, the island's famed casino, and of course, fabulous hotels. See a few of our favorite accommodations below so you can make the most of your trip to the Italian Riviera…we mean Catalina Island.

(Looking for a hotel while on the mainland? Check out our World's Best Awards winners in Los Angeles , and all the fantastic California hotels that made our It List in 2024, too.)

Bellanca Hotel

Courtesy of Bellanca Hotel

Its rooftop deck is perfect for sunset views.

Noise from the nearby nightlife can sometimes waft over to the hotel.

Located in the heart of Avalon, Bellanca Hotel is a charming boutique accommodation that's ideal for an easy breezy island getaway. The hotel offers oceanfront accommodations, including rooms with spacious balconies that look out to the sea. But its best spaces are found in the common areas, including its rooftop lounge, which is an excellent place to catch a sunset, and the restaurant, The Naughty Fox, where travelers can get heaping plates of sharable bites like nachos, mac n' cheese, and chicken wings.

The Details:

  • Accessibility: ADA-accessible rooms available
  • Wi-Fi: Included

  • Rates: Starting at $259 per night

The Edgewater

Courtesy of Amber Jenks

Its location on Crescent Avenue provides easy access to Avalon’s best spots, including the pier.

The property is a bit older than others on the island and may not come with some of the modern conveniences some travelers expect.

The Edgewater, a quaint gem on Crescent Avenue, is perhaps one of the most well-positioned hotels on the island. The family-owned hotel swung open its doors in 1920, giving travelers easy access to spots like Descanso Beach (about a 10-minute walk), the Avalon Casino (a 9-minute walk), and Catalina Island Museum (a 4-minute walk) for more than 100 years. The rooms are a bit older here, but they all still provide fantastic water views that are worth their weight in gold.

  • Rates: Starting at $180 per night

The Avalon Hotel

Courtesy of The Avalon Hotel

Its Mediterranean vibes will completely transport you.

There are no elevators, which could be an issue for some guests.

The Avalon Hotel offers a serene setting thanks to its lush gardens and inviting rooftop deck. Located a short walk from the beach and Avalon’s main attractions, it’s perfect for those who want to be able to dip into the crowds in town but return to their sanctuary whenever they need solitude. Guests can spend time in their rooms, which come decked out in coastal chic decor, or enjoy a bite to eat on either the rooftop terrace or the courtyard garden, which comes complete with a koi pond.

  • Accessibility: Due to the historic nature of the hotel, wheelchair-accessible rooms are not available.
  • Rates: Starting at $399 per night

Courtesy of Catalina Island Company

You’ll feel like you're staying in a luxurious private residence.

It’s located on a hill, which can be challenging for those with reduced mobility.

Mt Ada has a spectacular history. It was the one-time home of Wlliam Wrigley Jr. – yes, as in Wrigley gum. Guests can stay and feel like a candy baron for a night, too, in this accommodation that provides sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean thanks to its location perched atop a hill.

There are just six guest rooms at the hotel, each boasting vintage furnishings just like those Wrigley would have had in the home when he lived there. For a special stay, book either the Grand Suite, which was Wrigley's bedroom, or the Garden Suite which has a private patio outside.

  • Accessibility: Due to the historic nature of the home, there are no ADA-accessible rooms.
  • Rates: Starting at $679 per night

Hotel Metropole

The beach house here will make families and groups feel right at home.

Some rooms face an interior courtyard, so if you want a view make sure to be specific when booking.

Find modern flare on Catalina Island at Hotel Metropole. The hotel, located in central Avalon, features modern rooms all boasting clean aesthetics with gleaming wood floors, white linens, and some suites with fireplaces and jacuzzi tubs for added romance.

Those wanting to feel at home, or wanting to bring their whole crew, can book the hotel's beach house, which includes two bedrooms, two baths, and a full chef's kitchen. The hotel also has an in-house spa with a lengthy menu of treatment options so guests can fully unwind during their stay.

  • Rates: Starting at $299 per night

Snug Harbor Inn

Courtesy of Snug Harbor Inn

The complimentary breakfast and wine and cheese hour are a fantastic add-on.

It only has six rooms so there's limited availability, making early booking a must.

Snug Harbor Inn is the cozy boutique property every traveler dreams of staying in. It has just six rooms, meaning each guest is always the star of the show. Each room is individually decorated giving them all a unique feel, but there is still a cohesive vibe thanks to coastal decor, royal blues, and some with an ocean view. Each day guests can enjoy a continental breakfast right in their room and later head down to the common area to chat with fellow guests over wine and cheese. At night, guests can also check out a movie from the extensive library and snuggle up before bed.

  • Accessibility: Due to the historic nature of the inn there are no ADA-accessible rooms available.
  • Rates: Starting at $292 per night

Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel

Courtesy of Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel

The Instagram-ready decor and outdoor pool make it an attractive stay.

The hillside location offers great views but can be challenging for those with reduced mobility.

The Zane Grey Pueblo Hotel is another historic getaway on the island with a unique past. It was originally built in 1926 by author Zane Grey as his personal vacation home. Now, it's a must-stay accommodation with some of the best views on the island. Each of the spacious bedrooms has bohemian-meets-coastal furnishings, including an absolutely enormous penthouse that can sleep up to six guests. When not enjoying their rooms, guests can lounge by the pool on one of the rattan chaise loungers and watch the sun go down.

  • Rates: Starting at $350 per night

Hotel Mac Rae

The lovely courtyard makes for a convivial atmosphere.

It's a smaller hotel so it doesn't have a ton of bells and whistles (but it still has plenty of charm).

Hotel Mac Rae, a family-owned historic hotel, has been a beacon of vacation fun since its opening day in 1920. The property is one of the most recognizable on the island thanks to its bright blue painted signage in the middle of Crescent Avenue. It's a small hotel, but without question one of the most welcoming on the block. Its rooms surround a communal courtyard where guests are invited to hang out together, and it's just a few short steps from the town's most sought-after attractions. Best of all, it's one of the more affordable stays on Catalina.

  • Accessibility: Limited, no elevator
  • Rates: Starting at $199 per night

Pavilion Hotel

The hotel’s courtyard garden allows easy access to the California sunshine.

The resort fee can add up for your overall cost.

The Pavilion Hotel, located just steps from Avalon’s beaches, offers fantastic resort-style living with amenities galore. Right off the boat guests will experience all the hotel's luxuries, which include luggage service to and from the ferry so you don't need to lift a finger. Guests also get access to complimentary beach towels (which is ideal, considering the beach is just a few steps away), a courtyard wine and cheese reception, and a $20 per room, per night food and beverage credit to use at their whim.

  • Resort Fee : $40 per night Pet Policy: No pets allowed
  • Rates: Starting at $191 per night

Know Before You Go

Make reservations in advance if traveling during peak season.

Things can get seriously busy on Catalina Island during the peak summer season. That's why it's critical to make all your reservations, including hotel, restaurant, and excursions, as far in advance as possible to ensure you don't miss out on a thing.

Catalina Island is just a short ride from Los Angeles

Catalina Island is rather easy to get to from the mainland . Travelers can hop on a ferry from ports in Long Beach, San Pedro, or Dana Point, with the shortest ride taking just one hour. Want to get there even faster? You can also book a helicopter ride from Long Beach and get there in about 15 minutes.

Pack plenty of layers

Catalina Island is just that — an island. While things certainly warm up during the summer days, it can feel a little chilly at night if there's a breeze. So make sure to pack a sweater or a light jacket to ensure you stay comfortable throughout your trip.

Don't miss the buffalo

One of the most interesting parts of Catalina Island is its buffalo herd. The massive animals have roamed the island since the 1920s when they were brought over for a film shoot. The animals are now maintained by the Catalina Island Conservancy. The best way to see them is on a guided tour that will bring you close enough to get a great photo but far enough to keep both you and the animals safe.

How We Chose These Hotels

Several of the hotels mentioned on this list are personal favorites of our editors. Writer Stacey Leasca has also visited the island many times over the years as a Los Angeles and Long Beach resident. She also consulted family and friends who frequent Catalina Island for their input and researched guest reviews from a multitude of websites for others. And finally, as with all our hotel roundups, editors ensure all hotel recommendations we make align with our core T+L Hotel Values .
