Fuel Freedom Foundation

Is your car a flex-fuel vehicle? Use this tool to find out

You’ve seen the badges on the rear ends of cars, trucks and SUVs, likely while you’re stuck in traffic. They say “FlexFuel” or, more descriptively, “FlexFuel … E85 Ethanol.” Almost 20 million vehicles in the United States come off the assembly line as flex-fuel, meaning they can run perfectly well on any mixture of gasoline and ethanol, up to E85 (which is actually 51 percent to 83 percent ethanol, the rest gasoline).

But not all of them have that shiny badge declaring them flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs). Sometimes a yellow gas cap is the dead giveaway, but those caps only started appearing on model-year 2008 vehicles (2006 for General Motors). Buried deep inside the owner’s manual, too, is a notice about which fuels are approved to run in your vehicle.

Now, there’s an easy tool that will tell you whether you’re one of those lucky 20 million whose vehicle can take E85. Fuel Freedom Foundation has just unveiled the Check Your Car tool . You can enter in your vehicle’s make, model, year and engine size, and it’ll tell you whether you’re driving an FFV.

This tool is long overdue, because ever since the first FFV rolled out of the factory — the 1996 Ford Taurus , which actually could run on gasoline, ethanol and methanol — FFV owners have consistently not taken advantage of all these engines can do. Less than 10 percent of such drivers use E85. Part of the reason likely is that only a small percentage of the nation’s fueling stations offer it. But that proportion is rising: E15, which has twice as much ethanol as regular gasoline (which contains up to 10 percent ethanol already), is spreading around the country , and more stations are offering E85 as well.

Using higher ethanol blends, and less gasoline, has multiple benefits:

  • It’s cheaper for consumers. The Renewable Fuels Association says blending ethanol into the nation’s gasoline supply saves the average American family about $1,200 a year.
  • It’s a natural octane enhancer, which makes engines perform better.
  • Since ethanol burns more efficiently, it results in fewer tailpipe emissions being released into the air, which is better for air quality.
  • It’s an American-made fuel, requiring American-based jobs. The U.S. only produces less than 10 million barrels of crude a day but consumes some 19 million. The difference must be imported.

Check Your Car is part of our Fuels 101 initiative, which will soon include other features such as an education page about the various fuel types; how to find a station that sells alternative fuels (for the time being, use the Alternative Fuels Data Center’s locator ); and how to find a kit that could convert your gasoline-only engine to run on ethanol.

So check back soon. In the meantime, kick the tires and take Check Your Car for a test drive.

Fuel Freedom is a non-profit with a simple mission: break America's oil addiction by bringing competition to the U.S. transportation fuel market.

Types Of Gas A Dodge Journey Takes (All Generations)

We’ve written extensively about the Dodge Journey, its capabilities, and various features on this blog. Today, we will talk about what fuel this SUV needs and what fuels are strictly prohibited. Let’s start with a quick answer:

Dodge Journey, manufactured between 2008 – 2011 and with a 2.4L engine, use regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87. The 3.5L versions take 89 octane gasoline. All Dodge Journey manufactured after 2011 take regular unleaded gasoline with an octane of 87.

However, that doesn’t tell the whole story. Below we’ve outlined recommendations and requirements for different kinds of fuels and fuel additives. We’ll also go into detail about the compatibility of the Journey with oxygenated blends. Furthermore, we discuss the tank size of these generations. Read on!

Infographic explaining the different types of fuel for a dodge journey.

Premium Gasoline

Let us start by talking about the use of premium gasoline in the Dodge Journey. Many Journey owners wonder if it isn’t better to use this kind of gasoline because it supposedly helps the car’s performance and the durability of the engine and its components.

The use of premium gasoline with an octane rating of 91 or higher is not advised by Dodge. Yes, the Journey can run on premium gasoline without any problems. However, using this gasoline will not give the Journey any benefits. The reason for this is that the engines aren’t designed to make use of the higher octane levels.

Instead, you’ll pay for more expensive gasoline without receiving benefits from it. Therefore, it’s recommended you stick to the guidelines mentioned at the beginning of this article.

Reformulated Gasoline

Another form of gasoline you get to pick from is the use of reformulated gasoline vs. non-reformulated gasoline. Reformulated gasoline was first introduced two decades ago in California. There, it was seen as an excellent decision to make this kind of fuel mandatory for the sole reason that reformulated gasoline burns more cleanly than non-reformulated gasoline.

These days, reformulated gasoline is mandatory in 19 areas of the United States. However, don’t be worried since the engine of all generations of the Dodge Journey is designed to use reformulated gasoline. Even better, Dodge advises you to use reformulated gasoline whenever it’s available because it creates fewer emissions and is, therefore, better for the environment.

Oxygenated Blends

Oxygenated blends of gasoline are designed for winter conditions. These fuels help your car start more easily when cold temperatures are the norm, and therefore you’ll see them across North America. The question is whether or not the Journey is compatible with these fuels.

The answer is that the Journey is compatible with these fuels, but only up to a certain percentage. Below we’ll give the guidelines for all generations of the journey:

  • Methanol should never be mixed into the fuel meant for the Dodge Journey
  • Dodge Journey manufactured between 2008 – 2014 can use fuel with a maximum of 10% ethanol. Journey manufactured after 2014 can use fuel with a maximum of 15% ethanol.

For the early generation of the Journey, E-15 (15% ethanol) and E-85 (85% ethanol) are therefore not usable at all. Later versions of the Journey can still not take E-85. Using fuels that contain methanol or more than 10-15% ethanol will result in numerous problems such as:

  • Poor accelaration
  • Knocking of the engine (more on that in a later subheading)
  • Check engine ligh illuminating
  • Damage of the vehicle that’s not covered under warranty

Gasoline With Additives

Another question people have about gasoline is whether or not they should add aftermarket additives to their fuel. These additives are generally marketed as fluids that either increase the performance or durability of the car. However, Dodge strongly recommends against the use of additives in fuel that’s meant for the Journey.

This is because many of these additives contain materials such as silicon and metallics, which will damage the engine and the fuel system. Therefore, they will do more harm than good to the car.

Instead, it’s recommended that you use gasoline that already has all the proper additives mixed into them. These fuels can be bought at certified TOP TIER gas retailers. You can find a retailer in your area via toptiergas.com. TOP TIER gas is safe to use with the Dodge Journey, and it also cleans the engine systematically, which will guarantee the best performance and lifespan for the car.

Engine Knock After Refilling

In some cases, you’ll hear the engine making a slight knocking sound. A slight knocking sound is never something to be worried about. Engine knock occurs when the car performs at near-maximum levels, such as when towing or driving up a hill.

However, if an engine knock occurs right after refilling and becomes very loud, it’s a reason for concern. In this case, you’ve likely used fuel with a lower-than-recommended octane rating. It’s advised you immediately stop the car and contact your dealer.

It’s likely your car will need to be drained, the fuel filter will need to be replaced, and the battery will need to be disconnected and reconnected to reset the car’s memory. Driving with a heavy engine knock will damage the engine and the fuel system in an unrepairable way, so please make sure you take these precautions as soon as possible.

Fuel Tank Size Per Generation

  • Dodge Journey manufactured between 2008 – 2011 that have FWD and a 2.4L PZEV engine have a fuel tank size of 18.5 gallons (70 liters). Journey with FWD and without a 2.4L PZEV engine or that have a 3.5L engine have a fuel tank size of 20.5 gallons (77.6 liters). All-wheel drive models have a fuel tank size of 21 gallons (79.8 liters).
  • Dodge Journey manufactured between 2011 – Present-day that have FWD have a fuel tank size of 20.5 gallons (77.6 liters) and all-wheel drive models have a fuel tank size of 21 gallons (79.8 liters).

Flex Fuel Differences

  • Add to quote

I am looking to put some power into my 4.7 liter however it is a flex fuel motor and i wanted to see what the main differences (other that the obvious fuel selection difference) in the 4.7 and the flex fuel 4.7. I want to do intake, exhaust, programmer, lift and gears, ect. but i don't know if it will negatively effect the truck being that it is flex fuel. Thanks for any help.

can a dodge journey use flex fuel

as it was explained to me by the dealer--the big difference is the fuel lines and timing.fuel lines are more robust for the large amount of alcohol. there is a sensor in the tank to detect reg. fuel or e87. the engine computor then makes a timing shift for the fuel type being used. when changing fuel types u need to be under a 1/4 tank for the sensor to detect the fuel type properly. don't know how true this is. some salesmen are dumb as a box of rocks!!

can a dodge journey use flex fuel

I just did a trip today from Salt Lake City, UT to Twin Falls, ID. I did the whole thing on E85 seems like the MPG is not even the same. Came home researched looks like E85 in the winter is more like E70 so its not worth it right now. So I am looking forward to my test in the spring/summer to see what is the difference is. I have a 07 Ram 1500 Flex so it has the 4.7l.

E85 is always less efficient fuel. It needs to be less then half the price of reg gas to save you any money.

Is the 3.6 SXT also flex fuel capable?

can a dodge journey use flex fuel

  • Add to quote

I just bought a 2012 SXT Plus and love it but noticed it has a Black fuel cap and flex fuel vehicles usually have a Yellow fuel cap. So does anyone know if the Challenger SXT is a flex fuel vehicle?

can a dodge journey use flex fuel

No, it is not.

can a dodge journey use flex fuel

According to Dodge's website it is check your manual or call your dealer to be sure.

can a dodge journey use flex fuel

From what i remember the pentastar is capable of being flexfuel friendly, but if they didn't put the yellow cap or that lame sticker on the car I'd assume they didn't certify all the other fuel delivery items for e85. I'd stick to regular gas, you get more power and fuel economy.

It's confusing the website says it is but the dealer says if it doesn't have a Yellow fuel cap then it isn't and mine is Black. The manual says to use 89 octane for the 3.6 and 5.7 auto and 87 is acceptable. For Chargers is says to use 87 octane for the 3.6 or E-85. The 89 octane recommendation for the 3.6 Challengers must mean they have more ignition timing than the Charger or 300 3.6. So having more timing and true dual exhaust probably explains the HP increase over the other 3.6 versions.

Asked dealer and was told me the same about it not being flex

From what I've put together, the 3.6 engine itself is capable of running flex fuel. That said, the way the Challenger, etc... is set up, no colored cap, the specific fuel delivery system is most likely not set up for it. BTW, how old were you in the pic with your early Challenger. I was in my early-mid 20's when I had my '72. Like heck if I can find a single pic of it and myself. X-wife sabotage, most likely..........

That pic was taken in June 1980 when I was 18 and it was my first car a '71 Challenger convt that I bought for $1,250. It had a 340 4bbl, Column shift 727 auto, 3.55 gears w/Sure-Grip diff, Pwr Top, A/C and Manual steering. I got a few tickets with that 340, it would chirp 2nd gear all the time. lol

can a dodge journey use flex fuel

Both of those rides in the pics are sweet!

I compared the owners manual for the 2012 SXT Challenger to the one for the bosses 2011 Charger which is flex fuel and unless that label is there it is not a flex fuel vehicle. (The Charger has a label because it doesn't have a cap.) I think thats because the Challenger is tuned for 89 octane for best performance and that it wasn't practical to tune it for E85 as well.

I have a 2014 Journey with V6. We can get non-ethanol 91 octane in our area. Has anyone tried no ethanol gas? Is the increase in fuel econony worth it?

I've used non-ethanol 91 (Shell) a few times and haven't seen any significant difference in MPG consumption. Any difference in mpg wouldn't be enough to justify the difference in cost from regular gas. I would think if there were any gains from using it you can be certain that Dodge would be recommending that fuel to use.....but they don't. You may want to read the highlighted part of the the attachment I posted from your owners manual that deals with this question.

post-4656-0-24235000-1410574148_thumb.pn

The big difference with ethanol and non ethanol is ethanol breaks down after a period of time and has water in it. So if you continuously use allot of fuel emptying your tank no issues, otherwise use non ethanol.

webslave

I'm not sure the breaking down of Ethanol plays much of a role... From experience, I have two antique cars; a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado and a 1989 Chrysler LeBaron Turbo that is factory custom (options not available on the 1989 LeBaron) and both are only run once a year, so the gas sits for years before I run it low enough to "fill up". Both use Ethanol fuel (the only fuel available in my area) and I've never had an issue, and I don't use any Stabil like additive. The last time I got gas for the Cadillac was in 2010 (36 gallon tank) and the last time I got gas for the LeBaron was in 2012... For most folks, the breakdown of Ethanol is a non-issue. It does break down and it is hydrophillic, but, over a long period of time, not a matter of weeks or months.

Today's cars are designed to use Ethanol; all of the seals are designed to handle it and the vehicle is engineered to use a certain octane (regular 87, certainly not 91). Using a higher octane or paying more for non-Ethanol fuel is just flushing your money down the drain. If I had an older car, like the 1962 Avanti R2 that I've got my eye on, then non-Ethanol fuel becomes more of an issue since the rubber parts in its fuel system isn't designed for the corrosive effects of Ethanol and the valves are not designed for lack of lead as a coolant.

If we're talking E10 versus 100% petroluem, the difference is there, though negligible. If I had a choice of 87 E10 and 87 E0 for my Journey or 89 E10 and 89 E0 for my Special, I'd pick the cheaper option, and if 91 octane is the only non-ethanol fuel available I'd fill up with 87 E10 and be on my merry way. The putting 91 into a Journey is akin to flushing cash down the toilet. My Special sits for longer periods of time, getting only 5-7,000 miles per year, and hasn't had an issue related to fuel (yet). Both cars get a strict diet of Shell fuel due to discount programs I use, so both get E10 around here.

The real difference is in choosing E85 versus E10 or E0. In which case, RUN AWAY from E85. The fuel consumption is much worse, which results in higher cost per tank versus E10 or E0. Not to mention the power loss associated with it that causes that poor fuel economy, and if you do leave it in there for extended periods you run the risk of water problems.

I guess you can say we disagree about ethanol, I use 91 based fuel, maybe throwing my money away. I believe there is a improvement and I guess that is up too everyone individual preference.

Lobitz68

What improvements is it that you believe you are seeing? I guess that I am going to trust that the info in the manual was the result of engineering studies and that Dodge would not knowingly and purposefully break the law by making the statement it does if it were not true... That, and I'll save a buck wherever I can!

Definitely agree, and hence the reason, I'll never own a "Flex Fuel" vehicle. I'm one of those, by personal preference and economic/scientific evidence, that still believes that corn belongs on the table, either as the vegetable/grain/oil itself, or suitable feed for animals for consumption, and not subsidized and put in a gas tank for less power, higher cost, more maintenance issues and dubious benefits to our oil importation problems.

I'll never own a "Flex Fuel" vehicle.
Hey webslave, doesn't your Journey have the ability to use flex fuel?
I do get km/miles per tank. It seems to run better, i was using 87 octane had a tick in the engine, switched to higher octane noise gone. It seems to have better performance, step on the gas better response. The engine would have a slight shutter can even be noticed on the tach, went to the better fuel corrected that problem. So for me it is worth it.

A tick or a

Are you getting a tick, ping or a knock sound? Ticking engines are not fuel related but a ping or a knock is. If only premium fuels cure your 2014's sounds you need to get yourself down to the dealership and get it taken care of. BTW what fuel are you using to see the different results because I use top tier fuels exclusively and have tried both regular and premium and never found any difference at all except for the lighter wallet.

Nope not on the journey, on my previous vehicles. Dodge Ram 1500`s. Yes it is more like a ping or a knock both vehicles were new. I buy my fuel at Extra Foods. Like I said they both ran better and performed better on High octane.

Not all of them do... Mine doesn't.

Oh, my 2011 does. Not that I would ever bother with Flex Fuel anyways.

hockey_puck

hockey_puck

I don't think mine does either. No flexfuel badge on the back. Not that I care.

bigtsr

If you kept your window sticker check that , mine says flex fuel

but I don't have the back "FLEXFUEL" badge either.

No FlexFuel badge on mine but it does have E85 / Gasoline written on the gas cap.

This is from my owner's manual...

Journeys with AWD are non E85. They have a different gas tank. 2W units are usually E85.
