Customer

My wife & I have just completed the Journey of a Lifetime 16 day 15 night Trip as organised by Express to Russia. We also had a tour of St Petersburg & Moscow as well. The planning & execution of both trips was well above our expectations. The guides we had in all of our destinations were exceptional & the meet & greet & return to the stations went as smooth as clockwork. We had one minor hitch but that was through no fault of Express to Russia..a quick email from our Ipad had the problem resolved immediately We did have some misgivings at the start about doing the booking online ourselves but Elena was wonderful & answered all of our questions promptly & to our satisfaction. We felt comfortable with the whole process. The train trip is wonderful with Mongolia being a "special " place for us! We highly recommend Elena & her company. I am happy to answer any questions any body may wish to ask.

Thank you so very much for organizing our trip. Everything went wonderfully, and we really enjoyed our time in Russia. Moscow was beautiful, Lake Baikal was very cold, yet very fun to swim in, and the DPR Koreans that I met and made friends with in Vladivostok was beyond priceless. The guides you got for us did an exceptional job, and the drivers helped us out a lot as well. The hotels you got for us were great, and the room you got for us in the Vladivostok really made the long stay comfortable. The trains were also very enjoyable as was the Russian hospitality, although we really weren´t expecting people to be so generous or helpful. Overall, the trip was wonderful, and you arranged it magnificently. You really went out of your way to accommodate my schedule and help me with my schoolwork, so I really appreciate it; I couldn´t have done it without you. So once again, thank you for all of your efforts, and hopefully in the future you will be able to help us out again. Take care, and thank you for everything.

A train on Trans-Siberian Railway

Trans-Siberian Train

The main route of the Trans-Siberian Railway begins in Moscow and heads east to Vladivostok passing through Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Chita, Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The length of the route is 9259 km or 5753 miles. The train travels through 7 time zones and takes 8 days to complete without making overnight stops. The Trans-Siberian splits off into a few other fascinating directions as well:

Trans-Mongolian Train

The Trans-Mongolian Line was built from 1940 to 1956 between Ulan-Ude at Lake Baikal’s eastern shore and the Chinese capital Beijing. From Ulan-Ude the tracks go south towards Mongolia, crossing the great Gobi Desert and finally ending up in Beijing. This route is a mere 7867 kilometers long (Moscow - Beijing).

Trans-Manchurian Train

The Trans-Manchurian Line runs on the same route as the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya, which is a few hundred miles east of Baikal. From Tarskaya, the line runs southeast into China near Zabaikalsk and makes its way down to Beijing. This route is a 9001 kilometres long (Moscow - Beijing).

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Where does the trans-siberian railway start and where does it end.

The Trans-Siberian Railway starts in Moscow and extends all the way to Vladivostok on the Pacific Ocean. This route connects the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Are Beijing and Ulan Bator stops along the Trans-Siberian railway?

Beijing and Ulan Bator are parts of Trans-Mongolian railway - an offshoot of the main Trans-Siberian Railway. There are many options to arrange your travel: to visit Ulan Bator and or follow the Trans-Siberian railway to or from Vladivostok.

Can I use the hop-on hop-off principle when traveling by Trans-Siberian train?

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Train tickets in Russia are not open, so you will need a separate ticket with a particular date for each leg of your trip - for example, you may go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok, but you will only be able to leave the train for short stops at the railway stations. In case if you would like to explore different cities on the way, you will need separate tickets, for example Moscow – Yekaterinburg, Yekaterinburg – Irkutsk, Irkutsk - Vladivostok. We offer carefully planned private tours that will allow you to visit several cities on your way.

Are there showers aboard Trans-Siberian trains?

Most of the Trans-Siberian trains do not have showers, and there are two WCs per each carriage. Please consider it while planning your trip. We recommend to choose shorter distances (that is, to plan more overnight stops in the cities along the way) to avoid the inconvenience of not showering. Another option is to choose the trip on board a more luxurious train which has all the on-board amenities that one might need.

Are meals included on the board of Trans-Siberian express train?

When traveling with RZD regular trains meals are not included. You can easily buy your meals in the restaurant car.  Another option is to buy local specialties from “babushkas” (grandmothers, or simply Russian old ladies) on the short train stops along the way. This is a very authentic way of getting your meals.

What is the most comfortable way to travel on the Trans-Siberian railroad?

There are luxurious trains on the Trans-Siberian railway that are quite different from regular RZD trains and can be described as 5* hotels on wheels. We offer this type of accommodation on the Imperial Russia train where you can enjoy a full board menu, a shower and a comfortable compartment.

The Trans-Siberian Travel Tips

Get ready for your journey with our professional suggestions and enjoy the trip with ease and comfort.

Tips in Europe

What to pack

Pack comfortable pair of shoes and waterproof jacket, since some tours require walking for quite some time or spending time outdoors.

How much to tip

Tipping usually is up to you. Nobody expects tips from you in China, but it's polite to leave around 10% of the bill in Mongolia and Russia.

Russian climate is challenging to predict, and the weather can be windy and rainy, even during summers. Please check the weather beforehand.

When to travel

The Trans-Siberian journey is a tour requiring planning in advance. The best seasons are Summer and Late Spring, as the weather is sunny with fewer rains.

Please check the currency exchange rate beforehand. In Russia is Russian Ruble, in Mongolia - tugrik (you can change money for local currency straight upon arrival), in China - yuan.

Leave space in your luggage for famous souvenirs from each country: matryoshka and caviar from Russia, carpets and woolen sweaters from Mongolia, silk and green tea from China.

Linda and I enjoyed our Grand Deluxe Trans Siberian Tour

This is just a note to say how much Linda and I enjoyed our Grand Deluxe Trans Siberian Tour Rail adventure with Travel all Russia. We were especially glad to have seen the subways in Moscow which were not on the original agenda, but that our guide made sure we saw. Also, the opening ceremony at Naadaam in Mongolia was not in the schedule, but we were delighted to have a front row seat. It was an outstanding show.

Small Group Trans-Siberian Journey summer 2016

Our journey to Russia was a great one. All of the guides were wonderful and everything was so well organized.

There are just a few things I'd suggest. I think you need to warn future travelers about the Chinese train. There were not two lower berths as we were told and since neither of us was able to climb to the top bunk, we had to take turns sleeping! Also, the train was disgustingly dirty.

Other than that, the other accommodations were fine. As far as the food, there was much too much fish and borscht.

We were totally thrilled with our trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway

We were totally thrilled with our trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway!

The trains were clean, comfortable and always on time.

The hotels, though varied, were always welcoming and attractive. The restaurants, for the most part, served us well.

Our guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Once a guide could not join us because of a medical problem, and the next day another guide took us to two days' sites in one day.

Many thanks for arranging a most memorable Epic Trans-Siberian Adventure journey for us!

Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, times, fares & tickets in russia....

The Russian rail system is one of the largest in the world, and trains serve almost every town and city in Russia.  Train travel is a safe, comfortable and inexpensive way to get around.  In fact, it can be safer to use Russian trains than internal flights!  It will certainly be cheaper and far more interesting.  This page will help you understand Russian train system, choose the right train & on-board accommodation for you, and buy your train tickets securely online from a reputable source.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:  The Foreign Office now advises against all travel to Russia because of the war between Russia & Ukraine, see www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/russia .  I have left this page as is, but Real Russia is no longer trading because of sanctions and the Russian Railways website www.rzd.ru is currently unreachable.

How to check russian train times & fares, booking tips, moscow to st petersburg by train :  a quick guide....

Traveller Ian Newberry reports:   "on May 19 I travelled from Moscow to St Petersburg on high-speed Sapsan train 156 leaving at 13.00.  Departure was punctual and the staff greeting passengers could not have been better - they all speak English as well as Russian.  The service on the train was extremely good and in business class a full 3 course meal was served with wines and spirits all included in the price of the ticket.  Information was supplied through screens and announcements in English as well as Russian. The train is very comfortable and arrived 5 minutes ahead of schedule at 17.40.  If one wants to avoid a night train then this is a very civilised way to travel, on a par with any equivalent TGV or ICE available in western Europe."

Moscow to St Petersburg option 1:  By Sapsan high-speed train in 3h55

All baggage is X-rayed before you board a Sapsan, so arrive in good time for your train...

Buy tickets online from Real Russia

You can buy tickets online in plain English from www.trains.realrussia.co.uk , with good after-sales service if you need it.  This system is good for checking Russian train times, too, even if you plan to buy tickets at the ticket office.  You can use it to buy Russian train tickets wherever you live in the world.  If you live in the UK they can also sort your Russian visa & visa support .

Which tickets can Real Russia sell?   They sell tickets for any mainline train journey within Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Lithuania, Kazakhstan and the other ex-Soviet states, also for international journeys to or from those countries, for example Moscow to Berlin or St Petersburg to Helsinki, and also for Russian sleeping-car services within Europe, for example Paris-Moscow, Paris-Berlin or Budapest-Sofia.

Reservations officially open 60 days before departure, but Real Russia allow you to request tickets up to 180 days ahead and they will contact you for payment when the price is confirmed.

Can anyone buy tickets using this system?   Yes, you can buy tickets online with a credit card whether you live in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, or wherever.

How are tickets delivered?   If your train is e-ticketable, an e-ticket will be emailed to you.  If it's not, tickets can be collected free of charge at Real Russia's offices in Moscow or St Petersburg or they can be sent to any address worldwide.  Postage to a UK or EU address costs around £12-£15.

Who run this service?   Is it reliable?   This service is provided by Real Russia, a reputable joint UK-Russian company which has got very good reports from users.  Real Russia can also sort out your Russian visa & if necessary, Belarusian visa .

Booking tips :  Look for a train marked Firm if there is one. Firmeny trains are the best 'quality' trains, with modern coaches and good on-board service.  'TBC' means the system cannot provide a price for that particular train automatically, but they'll contact you with a cost by phone or email.  Note that even babies & infants need to have a ticket booked for them, even though they travel for free.

Buy tickets online at rzd.ru

You can also now buy Russian train tickets direct from Russian Railways at www.rzd.ru which now has an English version.  It's a bit fiddly and not as user-friendly as Real Russia, but there are no fees and it does work if you persevere.  It accepts some overseas credit cards, though not all.  It may currently reject US-issued cards, though perhaps not all.

How to buy tickets at the station

Other agencies who can arrange russian train tickets, svezhy veter - www.svezhyveter.ru/sv/rutrains.htm, way to russia - www.waytorussia.net, what are the trains like , the three types of train, the three classes of accommodation, life on board russian trains.

Whichever class of travel you choose, each coach is looked after by a pair of attendants called a 'provodnik' (male) or 'provodnitsa' (female).  The provodnik will check your ticket at the door to the sleeper when you board.  Shortly after departure, the provodnik will come round to take your ticket and the small bedding fee (less than £1).  You may be asked if you would like a glass of black Russian tea ('chai') - this costs about 15p.  Bedding (two sheets, pillowcase and towel) is then handed out in sealed packs - blankets and mattresses will already be stacked in your compartment.  After a few journeys, you will become quite proficient at making up your bed!

A samovar with unlimited free hot water is available at the end of the corridor - pack some tea or coffee, sugar, cuppa soups or water-based drinking chocolate and bring your own mug.   Most long distance trains have a restaurant car serving drinks, snacks, and inexpensive full meals - reckon on less than £7 for two courses and a couple of bottles of beer.

Security.  Are Russian trains safe for families or single women?

Yes!  There is no need to worry unduly about security on Russian trains, even for families or women travelling alone. How do you think Russian families or solo women travel?  By train, of course, like everyone else!   Just use common sense as you would in a hotel, locking your door at night and not leaving valuables unattended in your compartment.  In addition to the normal lock on the compartment door, 'Spalny Wagon' and 'kupé' compartments have a security latch which stops the door opening more than an inch or two, and which cannot be released from outside.  There's also a safe place for your bags at night - if you have a bottom bunk, there is a metal box underneath the bunk which you can only get to by lifting up the bunk - in other words, for anyone to get to your bags, they will have to shift you off your bunk first..!  Your provodniks will probably also lock the access doors at each end of the corridor at night to prevent unwanted guests.  Men and women share the same compartments in Russia, but it's generally quite safe for women travelling alone.  If you're a woman and find yourself in sharing with three men that make you uncomfortable, just ask the provodniks (carriage attendants) if they can move you.

Travel insurance & VPN

Always take out travel insurance.

You should take out travel insurance with at least £1m or preferably £5m medical cover from a reliable insurer.  It should cover trip cancellation and loss of cash & belongings up to a reasonable limit.  These days, check you're covered for covid-19-related issues, and use an insurer whose cover isn't invalidated by well-meant but excessive Foreign Office travel advice against non-essential travel. An annual policy is usually cheapest even for just 2 or 3 trips a year, I have an annual policy with Staysure.co.uk myself.  Don't expect travel insurance to bail you out of every missed connection, see the advice on missed connections here .  Here are some suggested insurers, I get a little commission if you buy through these links, feedback always welcome.

UK flag

Get an eSIM with mobile data package

Don't rely on WiFi, download an eSIM with a European mobile data package and stay connected.  Most newer mobile phones can download a virtual SIM including iPhone 11 & later, see device compatibility list .  There's no need to buy a physical SIM card!  Maya.net is a reliable eSIM data retailer with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating and a range of packages including unlimited data .

Get a Curve card for foreign travel

Most banks give you a poor exchange rate then add a foreign transaction fee on top.  A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month as I write this.  The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.  And you can get a Curve card for free.

How it works:   1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android .  2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses.  3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card.  4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app.  You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.

I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader.  The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than getting a card out).  I get a little commission if you sign up to Curve, but I recommend it here because I think it's great.  See details, download the app and get a Curve card , they'll give you £5 cashback through that link.

Get a VPN for safe browsing.  Why you need a VPN

When travelling you may use free public WiFi which is often insecure.  A VPN encrypts your connection so it's always secure, even on unsecured WiFi.  It also means you can select the geographic location of the IP address you browse with, to get around geoblocking which a surprising number of websites apply.  See VPNs & why you need one explained .  ExpressVPN is a best buy with a 4.7 out of 5 Trustpilot ranking which I use myself - I've signed up as an ExpressVPN affiliate, and if you go with expressvpn.com using this link you should see a special deal, 3 months free with an annual subscription.  I also get some commission to help support this site.

Carry an Anker powerbank

Tickets, reservations, hotel bookings and Interrail or Eurail passes are often now held on your mobile phone.  You daren't let it run out of power, and you can't always rely on the phone's internal battery or on being near a power outlet.  I always carry an Anker powerbank which can recharge my phone several times over.  Buy from Amazon.co.uk or buy from Amazon.com .

Touring cities?  Use hill walking shoes!

One of the best things I've done is swap my normal shoes for hill-walking shoes, in my case from Scarpa.  They're intended for hiking across the Pennines not wandering around Florence, but the support and cushioning for hiking works equally well when you're on your feet all day exploring foreign cities.  My feet used to give out first and limit my day, now the rest of me gives up before they do!

Local trains

steam railway trips near me

The commuter trains are mostly hard-seat train cars. You don't get a designated seat number — you just find space on a bench. These trains have a notorious reputation for being overcrowded, though this has declined somewhat. The trains make very frequent stops and are rather slow. For example, a 200   km trip to Vladimir takes about 3 h 30 min . They do (!) have toilets in the first and the last cars but it is going to be an unforgettable experience (use them in "emergency" cases only). Nowadays many new trains have been bought, especially in the Moscow region, which make commuting comfortable.

Tickets for commuter trains are sold in a separate room from the long-distance trains, and are sometimes sold from stalls located outside.

A few very popular routes, mostly between Moscow and nearby cities such as Vladimir, Yaroslavl, Tula, and others have an express commuter train that is considerably more comfortable. Your ticket will have a designated seat number and the seats are reasonably comfortable. The trains travel to their destination directly and are thus considerably faster.

Since 2011, dozens of local (prigorodny) trains are canceled each year due to lack of financing, and situation worsens each year. Cancellations occur everywhere over the country, except commuter zones of largest cities, such as Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Ekaterinburg and Irkutsk. Having latest news on cancellations may be essential for trip planning. Typical cancellation traits: most cancellations occur in the start of the year, sometimes some trains are returned into timetable, if local budgets find funds to sponsor them; some trains are cut at region borders, even when there are no roads over the border to the previous train destination; other local trains got cut to 1 a day or several a week, often with timetable, not convenient for tourists.

Transportation of bicycles

Transportation of a bicycle in a carriage is permissible for one ticket under condition of being compactly folded/dismantled and clean. Usually the bike is taken off its wheels and pedals, put into a bag and stored on the upmost shelf in the Platzkart carriage. The other class carriages have less space or shelves and the bike should be more compact.

On the train

steam railway trips near me

Especially when there is no dining car, the cars may be locked so that it's not possible to walk between different train cars or classes.

Smoking in the train is nowadays banned, but it's often tolerated to smoke in the area between the cars. Other than that, smokers can step out of the train at stations for a smoke.

The train toilets, if they're of the old type where the excrement is simply dropped on the tracks, are locked at stops and stations when the train stands still. Modern train toilets where the stuff goes into a tank can be used all the time.

Travel time can vary from several hours to several days. There are more types of train between the two capitals than between any other two cities in Russia. Apart from ordinary trains, there are rapid trains ( Sapsan ) that run by day only and cover the 650   km between Moscow and Saint Petersburg in 4 hours. Some of the overnight trains are quite luxurious — these include the traditional The Red Arrow service and the newer, fake-Czarist-era Nikolaevsky Express , complete with attendants in 19-century uniforms. Sheets, towels and prepacked breakfasts are included in all the better trains. Shared bathroom facilities are located at the end of the train car. There are special hatches that one may use to secure the door of the compartment from the inside during the night.

Stop duration may be vary from as quick as one minute (barely enough for passengers to leave and board the train) to as long as several hours. Check the timetable placed on door at the end of corridor. During stop you can buy various meals and drinks at platform from locals for pretty reasonable prices. Frequently, traders will walk through the cars between stops and sell everything from crockery to clothes to Lay's chips.

International connections

Due to differing rail gauge, when you cross the Russian border or even before it, you will either have to step onto another train or the train cars will have their wheels changed. Either way, expect this to take several hours. Since the mid-2010s international routes are operated by modern cars.

International tickets can be booked 60 days ahead of travel, except tickets to or from Ukraine or Moldova where the earliest time is 45 days ahead of travel. Groups of six or more persons will receive a discount of 20-30%. If you buy an international train ticket for a journey around your birthday (± 1 week), you will receive a discount of 35%.

The electronic visas introduced in 2020 are impractical for rail travel as they can be used on just two railway border crossings in the Russian Far East: Pogranichny-Suifenhe with China, and Khasan-Tumangang with North Korea.

Baltic states

Passenger cross-border services from Baltic states closed since 2020.

  • There are direct trains to Kaliningrad from the "Russian mainland" going via Vilnius without stop. The rail line from Poland to Kaliningrad is just used for freight.

Passenger cross-border services from Finland closed since spring of 2022.

North Korea

Passenger cross-border services closed since 2020.

Mongolia and China

Passenger cross-border services from Russia to Mongolia reopened at summer of 2022. Service from Russia to China planning to open at winter 2023/2024

  • The most famous routes are the Trans-Mongolian and Trans-Manchurian branches of the Trans-Siberian Railway , both connecting Moscow with Beijing the former via Ulaanbaatar and the latter via Harbin. Both trains run once a week, and in addition there's one weekly train connecting the Russian and Mongolian capitals, and services between Novosibirsk and Ulaanbaatar.
  • From the Far East there are trains between Harbin and Vladivostok on one hand and Chita on the other.
  • Finally, there's no bridge between Heihe and Blagoveshchensk but a boat service connects the cities, both of which have railway stations.

Poland and Western Europe

Passenger cross-border services between Poland and Belarus closed since 2020.

Central Asia

Overall the Central Asian rail services are dominated by long-distance services between Moscow and the national capitals largely used by Central Asians working in Russia. You will encounter old Russian rolling stock. Uzbekistan is the exception with its domestic intercity high-speed network. At the other end of the spectrum is Tajikistan where the only passenger trains are the services from Moscow.

One of the east-west lines in Russia, in Soviet times used for the Trans-Siberian services, crosses into Kazakhstan. Check the itinerary of the train if your nationality requires a Kazakh visa.

Tourist trains

There's much to see in Russia for railway enthusiasts. Many railway stations have old steam locomotives on display, and there are pioneer railways and railway museums. In addition there are some interesting train experiences:

Day 1 – London to Paris and onboard the sleeper service to Moscow

Your epic voyage begins at London St Pancras where you board the Eurostar service to begin your 8,000-mile journey across one third of the globe.  Sit back and relax as your meal and drinks are served in the comfort of your Standard Premier service seat whilst the countryside flashes past.  On arrival in Paris you change onto the direct sleeper service to Moscow.  This evening you travel eastwards through France and cross the border into Germany at around midnight.

Days 2 and 3 – Onwards towards Moscow

You spend a full day on board the sleeper train watching the passing scenery as you travel through Germany, Poland and Belarus and onwards into Russia, arriving in Moscow at around midday on Day 3. Upon leaving the train you transfer to your centrally located hotel, the stylish Four Seasons Hotel (5 star) for your two night stay.   After you have settled in to your room, you have the rest of the day to explore your surroundings.   Your hotel is superbly located in the centre of Moscow and only a short walk from the Kremlin and Red Square.

Day 4 – At leisure in Moscow

You have a full day at leisure in Moscow, with the opportunity for some sightseeing in this magnificent city.   This evening you enjoy a welcome Champagne drinks reception and dinner with wine included, and a chance to meet some of your fellow travellers who will be joining you on your amazing Trans-Siberian adventure.

Day 5 – Sightseeing in Moscow

Discover the fascinating city of Moscow and its famous sights during a full guided day which includes the Kremlin, iconic Red Square and St Basil’s Cathedral with its onion-domed spires.  In the Kremlin you will enjoy an exclusive private viewing of the treasures of the Tsars in the Armoury Chamber.   Lunch is served in the legendary Café Pushkin with its décor which evokes that of an early 19th century mansion.   In the late afternoon you will be transferred to Moscow Kazansky Station and greeted in the beautifully decorated Imperial Waiting Room with a glass of cold Russian Champagne and canapés.  You can mingle with the other guests before being escorted to the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express private train.  Once on board you have time to settle in to your modern, stylish cabin. Enjoy dinner on board the train in one of its beautifully designed restaurant cars as you begin your fantastic 12-night journey to Vladivostok.

Day 6 – Kazan

Your first stop is picturesque Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, situated  on the River Volga.  Although a large industrial city, Kazan is renowned for its beautifully ornate buildings including the Kremlin fortress, a UNESCO world-heritage site, home to the awe-inspiring Kul Sharif Mosque and the colourful onion-domed Russian Orthodox cathedral. Kazan is the birthplace of Feodor Chaliapin, one of Russia’s most famous opera singers, and you are treated to a private concert of his music.  Re-join your luxury train for dinner and perhaps a chance to meet new acquaintances over a drink in the bar car.

Kazan_Pano

Day 7 – Yekaterinburg

The train crosses the Europe-Asia divide and arrives in Yekaterinburg, capital of the Urals. Here the cultural and architectural influences of European and Asian civilisations come together in this fascinating and cosmopolitan landscape.   Your city tour includes the poignant site where the Romanov family were murdered in 1918, now a memorial church to the Russian Royal family. You will be taken to the obelisk marking the geographical border where you can drink a glass of Champagne with one foot in Europe and the other in Asia.

Day 8 – Novosibirsk

Today you arrive in Novosibirsk, capital of Siberia, founded in 1893 as a stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway, during its construction. Your guided tour includes the world’s largest Opera House, completed in 1945 by the city’s women and children, and Lenin Square, home to an impressive statue of this iconic political leader.  Time permitting you also travel to Akademgorodok to see its minerals museum and the fascinating Siberian Railway Museum.

Day 9 – On board the Golden Eagle

As your luxury train heads east you have time to watch the landscape unfold and spend a leisurely day enjoying the comfort and camaraderie of life on board.

Exterior

Day 10 – Irkutsk

This morning the train rolls into Irkutsk, the ‘Paris of Siberia’. Irkutsk is one of Siberia’s oldest cities, founded by the Cossacks in the mid-17th century. During your guided sightseeing tour marvel at the city’s Opera House, its museums and some classic Siberian carved-wood architecture, for which this area is renowned. At the Volkonsky House Museum, dedicated to the memory of the exiled aristocrats who are credited with helping to bring culture to Siberia, you are treated to a private concert and a Champagne reception. There is some free time to explore the quaint tree-lined streets and shop for souvenirs before you re-join the train.

Day 11 – Lake Baikal

Enjoy one of the most scenic days on board the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express as the train winds its way through tunnels and round cliffs as it hugs the shore of Lake Baikal, the largest freshwater lake in the world. There is a barbecue lunch on the beach (weather permitting) from where you can gaze at the snow-covered mountains on the distant shore and even go for a swim if you are feeling brave!  During the day there will be plenty of opportunities to take photographs.  After lunch is the chance to visit the small Baikal village of Listvyanka to see an exhibition about the area’s fascinating and unique ecology.

Day 12 – Ulan Ude

As you arrive in Ulan Ude, capital of the Buryat Republic, you will note a fascinating change of people and faces as you tour the area. During your guided city sightseeing there is a visit to the colourful Buddhist temple – the centre of Buddhism in Russia. At the Village of Old Believers there is time to learn about the local culture and history of these unique people as you are treated to a traditional meal and enjoy a concert featuring local dancers and musicians.

Ulan Ude

Day 13 – Ulaan Baatar

Your journey continues into Mongolia today and its’ capital city, Ulaan Baatar. Passing the central monument to the legendary ruler, Gengis Khan, there is a visit to the Natural History Museum. We start the tour at Gandan Monastery, one of Mongolia’s most important Buddhist Monasteries housing a community of over 500 monks. During lunch at a restaurant housed in a Ger or Yurt, a round felt-covered tent which is still a traditional dwelling for about a third of this nomadic nation, you can experience local hospitality and entertainment at its best.  A visit to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park allows you to experience the beautiful scenery of Mongolia.  Later you board the train in time for dinner as it heads back into Russia.

Days 14 to 16 – Remote Siberia

Now the Trans-Siberian railway, running like a steel ribbon from west to east, comes into its own as your luxury train continues eastward, contrasting dramatically with the harsh climate outside. The train follows the Shilka and Amur Rivers never far from the Chinese border. This is Siberia at its most remote. Discover the timeless beauty of this unparalleled region as the route takes you across a zone of permafrost. The vast distances and forbidding landscape demonstrate what a huge challenge it is to simply exist in this terrain. During the closing stages of your epic voyage the train reaches the most easterly point of the journey, passing Khabarovsk where it crosses the River Amur. Unbelievably you are now heading towards the Pacific coast and journey’s end. Enjoy a final dinner with your fellow travellers on board the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express.

Day 17 – The Sea of Japan and Vladivostok

Today you arrive in Vladivostok after having travelled over a staggering 8,000 miles from London along this classic route to the end of the Trans-Siberian line. It is time to bid farewell to the train as you set off on a tour of this intriguing, once “closed” city. Here, where European and Oriental cultures meet, highlights include a tour of a restored submarine, a visit to the Arsenyev History Museum and a boat cruise on Golden Horn Bay, a natural deep-water harbour which served as the headquarters of the Russian Pacific Fleet. You transfer to the Hotel Lotte (5 star) for an overnight stay and time to say your goodbyes over a farewell dinner with wine included.

Day 18 – Return home

After breakfast you say farewell to Vladivostock as you make your own onward flight arrangements.

The Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express Hotel Train

Restaurant

Throughout your journey the bar lounge car and restaurant cars will host a variety of entertaining and enriching activities such as Russian language lessons and engaging lectures on local history and culture from expert guest speakers.  At the social heart of the train is of course the bar car lounge, a great place to relax and settle into the unhurried pace of life on board.

As evening falls, enjoy the sounds of the resident pianist playing on the baby grand piano in the bar lounge car.  Unwind in comfortable surroundings and watch the world go by as you get to know your fellow passengers… the bar stays open until the last person leaves.

A particular delight of the Golden Eagle are the two beautifully appointed restaurant cars.   Each morning a buffet breakfast is served and at lunch and dinner you will enjoy a delightful culinary experience inspired by the countries you venture through. All meals are skilfully prepared by the Executive Chef and his onboard team, using the very best ingredients and locally sourced wherever possible.  Attentive service and an excellent choice of wines accompany lunch and dinner, in addition to bottled mineral water, draught beer and soft drinks.

These Scenic Train Trips Through West Virginia Have Spectacular Mountain Views and Fine Dining on the Rails

West Virginia is a haven for scenic train rides — and one travel writer sampled the steam trains on offer to find the best trips.

I’ve been looking forward to a glass of wine in an elegant train car. I’ve even brought along a bottle of wine in my knapsack, just in case you have to bring your own. Unfortunately, at the last minute, I discover that West Virginia's Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad serves no alcohol on its cocktail-hour excursion. Not even BYOB.

Departing from Romney , West Virginia’s oldest town, the Potomac Eagle gets its name from its route along the South Branch of the Potomac River and the abundance of eagles there. That’s especially true in the high-walled, thickly forested canyon called the Trough, so named by George Washington on a 1748 surveying expedition. I'm on the Sunset Trough trip , a three-hour ride that, according to my research, offers "eagle sightings in a soft canyon glow."

The train has two engines, one at either end. Pulling us on the first leg of the journey through West Virginia's Trough Canyon is the Potomac Eagle 8250, an ungainly-looking, hard-working diesel road switcher built in 1955 for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Hauling us home on the opposite end is the powerful, photogenic 1755, which was used as a prop in the 2023 Tom Hanks film "A Man Called Otto." On both trains are coaches, dining cars, and even an open-air gondola, or what railroaders simply call a "gon," for those who want a wide view of the Trough and its eagles.

Meal service begins shortly after our 5 p.m. departure. Based on ticket class (and price), the food ranges from snack-bar items to a four-course dinner prepared on the train. The railroad has new owners, who are not only angling for an alcohol license (expected soon), but have invested heavily in the onboard cuisine.

“We do all the food preparation and cooking right here on the train,” says Gretta Ramsey, the line’s food and beverage manager, “which is important if you want to present a high level of meals. We’ve been able to upgrade the menu with more choices, more local food items, and in general, higher-quality ingredients.”

At a brief stop just before entering the Trough, guests can leave their assigned cars and move to the open gon. But with rain threatening, not everyone wants to. Too bad, because no sooner do we enter the Trough than an eagle dive-bombs from high above us to inches over the water’s surface. Another eagle does an Icarus over the canyon until it’s out of sight. Two eaglet siblings, barely fledged, cautiously pump their wings above the river, then return to their nest.

We’re lucky to have Robert “BJ” Lefever on this train. Lefever is an eagle spotter. He knows their nests, predation patterns, and how to find them in treetops, even surrounded by hundreds of identical treetops. Standing in the open gon, he shouts out the location of each bird so loudly that his voice often cracks. In less than five minutes in the Trough, we sight six eagles, with more to come. And Lefever is always the first to spot them.

“They call me ‘eagle-eye’ around here,” he says with a laugh.

The next day, I sampled a different scenic train of West Virginia. In the tiny town of Cass, 110 miles from Romney, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is holding its annual Parade of Steam when I arrive. The railroad rolls out all five of its Shay steam locomotives, tooting their whistles, chuffing black coal smoke, and fuming chutes of white steam through its piston valves and exhaust ports. The Parade of Steam is a veritable Miss America pageant of the Iron Horse.

The scene, when I arrive, is heart-stopping in its magnificence. These locomotives, weighing between 40 and 154 tons, are formidable beasts, loud and oily and reeking of burnt coal. Ash and embers fly through the air, leaving the bystanders blinking and rubbing their eyes. Engine grease soils the tracks. The noise is ungodly, ear-splitting. Water drips from the undersides of the locomotive boilers, leaving muddy paths alongside the wheels.

It is, in other words, spectacular.

Watching it all is visitor Patrick Tabor, a miner in a rock quarry near Roanoke, Virginia, three hours away.

“I’ve always been a railfan,” he tells me. He’s booked on two rides this weekend. “I grew up where there’s lots of railroad history. I especially like the steam trains.”

Another visitor, Nathan Watson, was originally from Cass, so he’s familiar with the steam locomotives and their sorrowful whistles resounding among the valleys.

“My grandpa was a brakeman here,” he says, “and lived across the river. I used to bum rides on the trains when I was a kid. I just love ’em.”

The railroad started in 1901 to carry timber down from the mountains to the Cass mill built by the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. The grades are steep, as much as 9 percent, so the company used Shay locomotives, a revolutionary design that relies on geared wheels and which improves the traction. The lumber and mill business ended in 1960, and West Virginia’s state park system bought the rolling stock, engines, and right of way soon after. Tourist excursions began in 1963.

At the ticket office, a sign above the guichet says, “Special Rides Today.” When I inquire, the woman behind the grillwork says they have hour-long steam-driven rides in old parlor cars along the Greenbrier River, the next one leaving in 15 minutes. I unhesitatingly pay 30 bucks and quickly find passenger car 3607 on the train, make my way to my assigned four-person table, and take seat A, a window perch on the left side of the car.

Our train follows the Greenbrier Branch right of way of the former C&O Railroad, which back in the day would send trains to Cass to pick up milled lumber and bring it to market on the mainline. As it turns out, we are riding on a slightly abbreviated version of Cass Scenic Railroad’s newest itinerary, the Greenbrier Express , using the same cars and steam locomotives.

The Greenbrier River Valley is teeming with wildlife. Passengers may spy mergansers and mallards, deer, and even black bears. On this day, we see all those things and more, except for the bears. The shallow river, 30 feet broad, takes up most of the valley floor, leaving the train clinging to a steep hillside. The steam whistle echoes lugubriously among the slopes. Photogenic cascades froth down the sides of the hills, passing below our tracks and flowing into the river.

The rolling stock behind our locomotive includes a coal car, U.S. Mail Rail Post Office 706, West Virginia Central diner 202, Western Maryland Railroad passenger cars 3607 and 835, and Chesapeake & Ohio caboose 90658. Despite the mismatched cars, it is one hell of a handsome train.

The next day, I find myself again in Cass. I’ll stay overnight in one of the former Cass Company houses , built for the mill and railroad workers in the early 1900s and now available for rent. But at the moment, the big event is one the most scenic rail journeys in the country: the ride to Bald Knob, the third-highest peak in West Virginia.

Onward and Upward to Bald Knob

As we board at the Cass station, each passenger receives a plastic bag containing a “hobo lunch” (hamburger bun, cold cuts and cheese, macaroni salad, cookies, apple sauce, and bottled water). Some of the passengers dig into the chow right away, while others hang onto it, waiting until we reach Bald Knob, two hours up the mountain.

Our engine, Shay No. 11, was built by the Lima Locomotive Works of Ohio in 1923. The Shays were designed for power and grip, not for speed. They can reach 11 mph if called upon, but average only about 6 mph on most trips.

The rolling stock on the Bald Knob excursion consists mainly of gondolas once used to carry cut trees to the mill. The state park put roofs over the cars and double-sided wooden bench seats lengthwise down the centers. Some far-thinking passengers have brought light jackets, in case the weather turns cold on the mountaintop, and which they use as seat cushions for the five-hour round-trip ride.

Our climb begins at an elevation of 2,452 feet; the summit, 11 miles away, is at 4,842 feet. Not every steam locomotive can make such a climb, especially considering the curves we have to contend with.

We come to a switch, where we reverse direction onto a new set of tracks. Our locomotive, which had been pushing us, is now pulling us. Coal smoke unexpectedly flows back into the open passenger cars. The train crew advises us to squint and look away if a cloud of smoke comes at us. Eyewash is available for anyone who needs it. Many do.

We pass three grand vistas where the tracks are higher than the treetops on the downslope side. Range after range of mountains come into view, fading from forest green to powder blue on the far horizon. The timberlands here are rich and varied: maple, oak, beech, birch, mountain ash, and the placer gold of timber, red spruce, prized by the lumber mills for its grain, strength, and beauty.

Finally, we pull into Bald Knob, two hours from Cass. Picnic tables are scattered about a vast meadow. From down in the valley, I can hear the high, lonesome whistle of another Shay, a sound at once joyous and mournful.

I take a seat by myself at one of the picnic tables and look into my day pack to see if any of my hobo lunch remains. Imagine my surprise when I open the pack and find the bottle of wine I’d bought days earlier and failed to use as a BYOB on the Potomac Eagle. I also discover a Par Mar gas station 16-ounce paper coffee cup (“Buy this size and save up to 1¢ per gallon”), which I’d picked up that morning. What are the odds?

No alcohol is allowed here or anywhere else in the state park. Yet high atop the knob, surrounded by dramatic and distant views of the wild mountains of West Virginia, I can’t resist. I open the wine, fill the coffee cup halfway, and raise a surreptitious toast to railroads everywhere, the older the better.

Along Baikal by rail – (probably) the most beautiful route in the WORLD! (PHOTOS)

steam railway trips near me

To take a ride along Lake Baikal is a pleasure that you can’t afford to refuse. The Circum-Baikal railway was built in 1904 to connect the western and the eastern parts of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Today, it has become one of the most popular tourist routes of Siberia.

‘The Golden Buckle’

Under construction, 1902-1904.

Under construction, 1902-1904.

In 1891, the construction of the longest railway in the world began – the Trans-Siberian Railway. Just imagine: before that, a trip from one end of the country to the other took a whole year! Of course, Russia simply needed a railway like this and the best and brightest minds of the era were mobilized for its construction. The Trans-Siberian Railway was built in separate sections, which were later connected.

But there was a natural obstacle in the way of the construction – Lake Baikal.

1901-1903.

At first, the trains were transferred across by an ice-breaker ferry. The way could be shortened only by building a road around. The southern coast of Baikal was selected for such a construction.

Constructin the bridge, 1902-1904.

Constructin the bridge, 1902-1904.

The terrain of the lake’s coast is very complex and craggy. The project work took more than 10 years. To lay down rail tracks, builders cut a way through the rocks and used explosives. In some places, one can see the marks from the holes where dynamite was put. In the end, forty tunnels, 16 stone galleries, 470 bridges and viaducts had to be built. The overall length of the railway around Baikal, at that moment, amounted to 260 kilometers. The Circum-Baikal railway is often called “the golden buckle of the steel belt of Russia”, since it connected the western and the eastern parts of the Trans-Siberian Railway. And, until the 1950s, it justified its name. However, due to constant avalanches, Soviet engineers had to move the rail tracks further away from the lake’s coastline. In the end, a part of the Circum-Baikal railway was closed, while another part was flooded during the construction of the Irkutsk Hydroelectric Power Station. The Trans-Siberian Railway trains now run on a different line, away from these dangerous areas.

Back in the 1980s, the closed part of the Circum-Baikal railway was taken under state protection, recognizing its architectural value to history. Tourists began flocking there to witness this engineering wonder from 100 years ago with their own eyes. However, the railway tracks could only be restored and the tunnels reinforced in the 2000s. Today, this 89-kilometer-long section is called the Circum-Baikal railway.

The first tourist steam train was launched on this historical route in 2005. Today, apart from it, you can board a regular electric train that connects remote villages of Baikal with the regional center.

From Slyudyanka to Baikal in five hours

The trip starts at the Slyudyanka I station and ends at the Baikal main station. The simplest way to reach Slyudyanka is by electric train from Irkutsk, the closest large city to Lake Baikal. By the way, the Slydyanka train station building is the only one in the world built entirely out of white marble.

Along the way, you’ll see an astonishing amount of unbelievable structures. One of the first grand arched viaducts is near the village of Staraya Angasolka (the “149 kilometer” stop).

The stop

The stop "154 km".

The longest tunnel runs through the Polovinny cape. You can see it at the “110 kilometer” stop. The tunnel is 778 meters long, but, since it’s straight, you’ll definitely see the light at the end of it!

One of the most picturesque stops is called ‘The Italian Wall’, a  stone retaining wall in the form of arches reminiscent of the bridges in the Alps. This structure protects the railway from rock falls. In addition, Italian and Prussian specialists really did work on the construction.

The trip ends at the Port Baikal station. There, you can find the museum of the Circum-Baikal railway and an old lighthouse.

Many tourists transfer from Port Baikal to Listvyanka by water in half an hour, from where they then spend an hour reaching Irkutsk by bus. If you wish to take a closer look at the local landscape, you can disembark from the train and spend a night in one of the villages (“137 kilometer”, “98 kilometer”, and “79 kilometer” stations all have tourist centers).

Want to see a city like a local? Take the subway.

Subway stations and train cars provide an intimate view into how citizens shop, interact and move about.

Welcome to The Upgrade, By The Way’s series on travel hacks and hot takes. See how to submit here.

The revelation began, like so many do, in the bathroom — the women’s room at the Tokyo Metro’s Shibuya Station, to be specific. A whimsical mural of birds covers the walls, and a loop of birdsongs serve as quiet ambient music. My fascination with subway stations took root.

The futuristic, perpetually teeming transit hub is described on its website as having “a magnetism that few can resist.” I cannot be the only person who credits that allure largely to the restrooms , which are as sparkling as the lobby facilities at any Four Seasons Hotel.

The station itself was equally immaculate. And when a train pulled in, people waited for riders to exit before they filed in, no matter how crowded it was. The systematic flow of people on the escalators — standing on the right, walking on the left, no exceptions — made me think that children receive subway etiquette training in public schools. The orderliness, the cleanliness and respect for fellow urbanites add up to a portrait of Tokyo, condensed.

I will always opt for public transportation when I travel. The true local experience is unavoidable when you’re side by side with others, observing what they’re buying, what they’re reading and how they treat one another. A city’s heartbeat pulses along its tracks.

Yes, it can be a hassle to decode the fare machines in a foreign transit system or to navigate the labyrinthine tunnels, which never fail to call to mind a litany of disaster movies. But who doesn’t appreciate a little mystery on their journey?

When everything runs smoothly, the subway gets you to your destination more quickly than a car inching through traffic. Plus, it offers bite-size doses of the city’s attractions and idiosyncrasies. In New York City, for instance, you get public art ; art deco accents, a flicker of an extinct opulence; talented buskers; newsstands hawking overpriced soft drinks and snacks; and critters that constitute the urban ecosystem’s wildlife. If a full-immersion local experience is what you’re going for, you need to take in the lows as well as the highs.

The Moscow Metro is a series of concentric circles of tracks with routes that radiate out from the center like spokes. The map is chaotic and perplexing and tough to navigate if you don’t know Cyrillic, but the stations make you forget all that. The glorious underground art and architecture is museum-worthy. The underground retailers sell an assortment of necessities — home goods, clothing, beauty items, hardware and electronic gizmos, evoking the simplicity, efficiency and forced minimalism of 20th-century life there.

The London Underground , founded in 1863, maintains its Victorian charm. It manifests not only in the brick archways and tiled surfaces, but also in the aggressive civility, like the famous “Mind the gap” safety announcement and the billboards emblazoned with a colorful cartoon heart encouraging straphangers to “Be kind.”

In Belgrade, Serbia, an official visitors website deems the system “easy to use, but hard to love, yet it has a certain charm.” The message nails the city’s no-nonsense exterior and huge heart, a dynamic I love about it.

The streetcars that click-clack down busy thoroughfares are just another performer in the vintage production that is New Orleans.

As a New Yorker without a driver’s license who’s dependent on the subway for everything, I cannot endorse the Metropolitan Transportation Authority enough. Yes, there are breakdowns and delays along its 850 miles of track, shutdowns for construction, litter and the sheer humanity, which gets increasingly — let’s call it multisensory — as weather heats up. And the public kvetch fest sometimes feels like an Olympic sport. (“My commute was worse than yours,” people will say, ad infinitum.)

Yet despite all those demerits, I remind tourists in New York that you get what you pay for, which is $2.90 per ride . Personally, whenever I travel, I’d rather spend cash on memorable meals, museum books and purchases from stores that don’t exist elsewhere than drop upward of $20 on a car ride to get somewhere.

"Mariana, the time will come when you will apologise to the entire army for what you have done, I hope in court!", he added.

Six people are now known to have died following the Russian guided bomb attack on Kharkiv, local authorities have said.

Kharkiv mayor Ihor Terekhov said one child was killed in a playground and three people were killed in a 12-storey apartment block that caught fire as a result of the strike.

The Ukrainian authorities did not give the circumstances in which the two other people died in the strikes, which hit four areas of the city.

As well as those people who died, at least 55 others were injured, officials said.

About 20 of the injured were in severe condition, according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.

Top Ukrainian officials have begun a visit to Washington, the Ukrainian presidential office has said.

The delegation includes economy minister Yulia Svyrydenko and defence minister Rustem Umerov.

"We are working in Washington... We are grateful to our partners for their support," the president's chief of staff Andriy Yermak said on Telegram .

The visit comes amid Volodymyr Zelenskyy's renewed a call on Western allies to allow Ukraine to use long-range Western weapons to attack Russian military air bases.

Kyiv says that the most effective way to counter Russian strikes is to target Russian planes, not the bombs themselves.

The US ambassador to Ukraine has called on Russia to be "held accountable for these war crimes" in Kharkiv.

In a statement on X, Bridget A Brink said "Russia struck an apartment building in Kharkiv with a guided aerial bomb, killing several and injuring many, including children".

Kharkiv has been the focus of heavy Russian bombing throughout the war, although there had been a drop in intensity in recent weeks, possibly related to a surprise invasion launched by Ukrainian forces into Russia's Kursk region.

Ukrainian authorities said today's attack involved five aerial guided bombs launched from planes in Russia's Belgorod region, also known as "glide bombs" which are fitted with a navigation system taking them to their targets.

The footage below shows the aftermath of the attack in Kharkiv.

The EU has rebuffed a request from Kyiv for the bloc to train Ukrainian soldiers inside the war-torn country, but will train them as close as possible to Ukrainian territory, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said.

The EU has trained some 60,000 Ukrainian soldiers inside the economic union's borders since Russia's invasion of the country and will aim to train 15,000 more by the end of the year, Mr Borrell said.

Kyiv has asked the EU to consider some training inside Ukraine, arguing this would be faster, more cost-effective, and logistically easier than inside the EU.

But multiple EU countries are reluctant to deploy troops inside Ukraine, expressing concerns about their safety and questioning whether such a move would divert Ukrainian forces from their core mission, in order to protect trainers.

Mr Borrell told reporters: "Some member states were ready, others reluctant.

"Finally, we decided that the training will be as close as possible to Ukraine, but not in Ukrainian territory."

Ukraine has urged Mongolia to arrest Vladimir Putin on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant when he visits next week.

The court issued an arrest warrant in March of last year against Mr Putin, accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine.

The Kremlin has dismissed the accusation, saying it is politically motivated.

The warrant obliges the court's 124 member states, including Mongolia, to arrest Mr Putin and transfer him to The Hague for trial if he sets foot on their territory.

Now, the Ukrainian foreign ministry has called on the ICC to arrest the Russian leader when he visits Mongolia on 3 September.

"We call on the Mongolian authorities to comply with the mandatory international arrest warrant and transfer Putin to the International Criminal Court in the Hague," the ministry said on Telegram.

Asked earlier today whether Moscow was concerned that Mongolia was a member of the ICC, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "No, no worries about this. We have a great dialogue with our friends from Mongolia."

Asked whether there had been discussions with Mongolian authorities about the ICC warrant, Mr Peskov added: "Obviously the visit, all of the aspects of the visit have been thoroughly discussed."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he held a meeting with the top military commanders of Ukraine this afternoon.

The president said that three key issues were discussed, starting with the situation on the frontlines.

Kursk invasion

Ukraine's top commander says Kyiv's forces have advanced up to 2km in their invasion of Russia's Kursk region.

Oleksandr Syrskyi briefed Mr Zelenskyy via video link and said Ukrainian forces took control of 5sq km of Russian territory.

Discussions were also had over the next set of reinforcements in the area, which Mr Zelenskyy said was "extremely important for strengthening our positions".

General Syrskyi also briefed the president on the ongoing fighting near Pokrovsk, which Ukraine is trying desperately to hold in the face of advancing Russian troops.

Preparing for new academic year

The meeting also covered how Ukraine will deal with the new academic year for schoolchildren, which starts next week.

Mr Zelenskyy heard reports from Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, internal affairs minister Ihor Klymenko and education and science minister Oksen Lisovyi.

The president said discussions covered security issues, as well as the construction of bomb shelters.

Energy problems

The third key issue addressed was the current state of Ukraine's energy grid following a week of heavy Russian strikes.

Mr Zelenskyy heard analysis of energy issues, including the potential construction of protective structures around key energy infrastructure.

Images are emerging of the aftermath of today's attack on Kharkiv.

Russia denies deliberately targeting civilians, but thousands have been killed and wounded in its strikes during its invasion.

The scenes come as Volodymyr Zelenskyy renews a call on Western allies to allow long-range attacks on Russian military air bases after the attack.

The number of people killed in a Russian strike on Kharkiv has risen to five.

Meanwhile, 40 people have been injured after the Russian missile hit a residential building and playground, according to the regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.

Earlier, we reported that a 14-year-old girl was among the dead.
