The Ultimate Packing List for Work Trips

As you start to travel almost every week, your business trip packing list will become routine. You might find yourself packing for your corporate trip in less than fifteen minutes! When trying to create my packing list for a work trip, I consider what items I will pack for personal travel as well. My work trip packing list is similar to my regular travel packing list, just the types of clothes that I bring will change. If you travel frequently enough, you might find it helpful to keep some items permanently in your suitcase, and only repack your clothing every week.

Building a Packing List for a Work Trip

Since I travel on a weekly basis, this Ultimate Business Trip Packing List is broken up by the following:

  • Essentials left in my suitcase each week
  • Items refreshed each week
  • What’s in my laptop bag
  • What I expect at the hotel

Packing Essentials for a Business Trip

If you travel for work frequently enough, it may make sense to have “doubles” of your toiletries, so you do not have to include them on your business trip packing list and pack them every single week. I keep the following items in my suitcase at all times:

Umbrella  // It is a good habit to check the weather before you start packing, but I have a small travel umbrella that I leave in my suitcase at all times, just in case. If you have an outer pocket on your bag, I would recommend leaving the umbrella in that pocket for easy access.

Toiletries // I keep travel-sized bottles of all of my usual toiletries in my suitcase at all times. This includes small bottles of: shampoo, conditioner, face wash, make-up remover, lotion. I then refill these every few weeks as needed. In addition I will keep a double of my toothbrush, toothpaste, cotton balls, deodorant, hairbrush and hair ties, and razor so that I do not need to repack these each week. As a woman, I also keep tampons and pads in my suitcase at all times.

Spare phone charger // I have a habit of leaving my phone chargers behind at home or at the office, and I have accidentally traveled without a phone charger before! Now, I always leave an extra phone charger in my bag, just in case.

Laundry Bag // My  Away Bigger Carry-On  suitcase came with a laundry bag inside, and I use this to keep my dirty clothes separate from the clean clothes I have not worn yet. I would recommend bringing some type of reusable bag to use as a laundry bag in your suitcase, so you can keep dirty underwear and socks at minimum separate from your work clothes.

All of my toiletries on my business trip packing list are travel sized, so that I do not have to worry about checking a bag. I keep shower items (shampoo, conditioner, face wash) in a separate plastic bag from my remaining items, so that when I am fast to unpack after arriving at the hotel. I use this TSA-approved clear toiletry bag to keep my items organized.

Refreshed Each Week While Traveling for Work

When I am traveling for work, I always bring enough clothes for the number of days that I am traveling, plus one extra day. You never know when you will spill something on your shirt, or you get stranded somewhere overnight! If I was traveling for work Monday through Thursday (3 nights), and I dressed business professional and wore a suit on the plane there, then I would pack in my suitcase:

4 Button-Up Tops // I primarily wear Express Portofino Shirts to work. I like these tops because you can wear them with a blazer, without a jacket, and even out to dinner in the evening. They are very versatile, and a staple in my work uniform. I always pack one extra shirt than days I am traveling – if I am staying 3 nights, I will pack 4 shirts to have one as a back-up.

2 Work Bottoms (Pants or Skirt) // If you include the dress pants that I wear on the plane, I would typically pack two additional bottoms to rotate between. I will bring additional bottoms that coordinate with my blazers for the week. For example, if I am wearing a black blazer, I would choose black bottoms. Navy blazer, navy bottoms.

1 Additional Blazer // Some people can get away with only bringing one blazer (worn on the plane) with them during the week, especially if you only wear your blazer while traveling but then take it off during the day while working. I personally like to bring a blazer to rotate between, and as a back-up in case I spill something on my other blazer.

1 Pair of Jeans, No Holes // It is a good idea to bring a pair of casual pants for when you are going to a team dinner or running errands after work. Occasionally I will wear my work pants to dinner as well, so I do not feel a need to bring more than one pair of casual pants. I opt for no holes or tears, to remain slightly more professional.

1 Pair of Heels // Assuming I already wore a pair of heels on my travel day to the client, I will bring an additional pair of heels to rotate between. I find that if I try to wear the same pair of heels everyday for a week, that they will start to smell.

1 Pair of Casual Shoes (Sandals or Flats) // It’s a good idea to bring a pair of casual shoes, for both team dinners or walking around the hotel. If you need to run down to the front desk, it’s a bit awkward to do so in pajamas and heels.

4 Pairs of Underwear // Always bring an extra pair, just in case!

4 Pairs of No-Show Socks // Whether you need no-shoe socks for your heels or dress socks for your shoes, don’t forget to pack your socks in your suitcase.

1 Set of Pajamas // You will not want to sleep in your dress clothes at night; don’t forget to pack a set of pajamas in your suitcase. My pajamas are usually a free firm shirt and a pair of shorts!

Work-out Clothes // I don’t typically work out during the week while I am traveling, but I threw this on the list so that you do not forget. It is a good idea to work out on the road, but you will need to find extra space to fit your work-out shoes and clothes. It’s possible, though!

Make-up Case //  My make-up case contains all of my daily-wear make-up, and since I use the same make-up on the weekends I will repack this each week. Depending on your routine, it may make sense to have doubles of your make-up on your business trip packing list as well

Hair Dryer  // You may be fine with the hotel hair dryer, however I have been working on improving my hair maintenance. I recently invested in the T3 Featherweight Compact hair dryer – it is so fast at drying my hair, and it is great for traveling. This hair dryer came with a dust bag and the hair dryer folds in half, for easier packing.

Jewelry // Depending on the level of formality, I might bring my jewelry case while traveling . I prefer studs or small hoops for a professional look, and might bring a few necklaces and bracelets to rotate between.

I also have developed a wardrobe that will work for both the work day and the evening. The shirts or blouses that I bring are usually convertible and fine for dinner in the evening. However, if you are wearing nicer shirts or dresses during the day, you may also want to consider packing casual tops for the evening as well.

My Laptop Bag Necessities

My biggest fear is leaving my laptop charger at home. Most of these items are always in my work bag and travel with me even to the office, but I wanted to go ahead and include on the packing list for work trips here.

Work Laptop & Charger // Make sure that you bring your work computer! It’s difficult to get anything done without your laptop and you do not want to waste time waiting on it to be shipped. The single most important thing for you to bring is your computer.

Wireless Mouse // You can order a cheap mouse off Amazon  for less than $10, and you can bring it on the road to increase your efficiency. I always opt for colors other than black, so that it does not get mixed up with anyone else’s belongings.

Headphones // I love my AirPods as they are great for taking calls, but any type of headphones are a good idea to keep in your work bag. You may have to take phone calls or watch videos in a conference room with your colleagues, and it is much easier to take these calls hands-free.

Phone Charger // I leave a phone charger in my work bag as well, so that I can charge my phone on the go. Especially if you are wasting time at the airport, it is important to keep your phone charger so you can contact coworkers when you land, or call an Uber if necessary.

Office/Client Access Badge // If you have been traveling to a client for a while, you likely received some sort of access badge to get into their building. You do not want to have to bother your client to get another badge assigned to you, or go through the hassle of speaking to security each time. If you have an access badge, make sure to leave it in your work bag so you do not forget it.

Pens & a Notepad // Even though we primarily use our computers these days, you may need to jot down client notes while your computer is loading, or draw out a sketch to explain an idea. It is a good idea to leave pens and a notepad in your bag at all times, so you never have to worry about asking your coworker to borrow one.

Gum  // Especially after a long flight or lunch, you will want fresh breath over the course of your work trip. Make sure to pack some gum in your laptop bag, so that you always feel fresh.

These items are always in my bag, so I will usually have them on my work trip as well. You never realize how badly you miss your wireless mouse until the day that you accidentally leave it at home!

Hotel Expectations During a Business Trip

There are a few items that I do not have on my packing list for work trips, because I expect my hotel to have them. If you are not picky about your toiletries like shampoo or conditioner, it would be much easier to just use the hotel versions rather than worrying about leaks in your suitcase. These items include:

Hand Lotion // I am picky for my face, but not for the rest of my body when it comes to lotion. It’s one less bottle that I have to pack, so I do expect to be able to use the hand lotion available in the hotel room.

Water Bottles // You typically get free water bottles with Marriott Platinum! It is greener to bring your own reusable water bottle, however I will admit I do not usually remember to. I do expect that there will be water in my hotel room, or at least easily accessible in the hotel, when I arrive.

Iron // One day, I do hope to invest in a portable steamer. For now however, I do expect an iron in the hotel room so that I can iron my clothes. I like to unpack the night that I arrive at the hotel, and I iron all of my clothes for the week at once. It can be difficult to iron all of your clothes the first night since you are likely tired from traveling, but you will thank yourself later in the week.

Towels // I know some consultants are particular and prefer to bring their own towels, rather than using those available at the hotel.  I, however, expect towels in the hotel and will gladly use those.

The single most important thing to bring on your business trip, honestly, is your work laptop. If you need toiletries that aren’t found in your hotel room, you can often call the front desk and they can bring additional toiletries to you. I ran out of toothpaste and forgot to re-pack it, and fortunately the hotel always has toothpaste packets to offer. Everything else, you can buy on the road.

Packing Your Suitcase for a Business Trip

When packing my suitcase for a work trip, 50% of my suitcase will be clothing. I use three packing cubes that fit in the compression compartment of my suitcase – one cube for my blazers and pants, one cube for shirts, and one cube for underwear.

Ready to start packing for your next three-day business trip? Then you know how hard it can be to strike the right balance. Short work trips are some of the trickiest to prep for; you won’t be gone very long, but you still need a variety of nice things to wear. If only leggings and sweatpants were acceptable office attire!

Then there’s the cosmetics, and all your other extras — like something good to read on the plane and a comfy sweatshirt if you get cold. Packing for a short business trip is definitely a challenge, which is why we’ve put together this comprehensive checklist. Keep scrolling for some helpful packing tips that will make planning for your upcoming trip a whole lot easier. And don't forget to use the right credit cards for your purchases to maximize your rewards.

Carry-on Item

When traveling on short trips for work, you should always try to limit your baggage to the things you can take in the plane cabin with you — which usually means one carry-on and one personal item. Not only will this save you or your company some money on travel expenses ; it’ll also save you a ton of time. Retrieving checked baggage can add anywhere between 15 minutes to an hour of wait time, and that’s in addition to the time you spent waiting in security lines or sitting in your cramped middle seat on the plane. Now imagine doing that twice in three days.

Packing two small bags for your business trip might sound ultra-minimalist, but with the right carry-on , you should be able to fit everything you need without a problem.

Things you’ll want to pack in your carry-on

Here’s a rough checklist of items you should plan on packing in your larger bag — aka your carry-on.

  • 1 clean dress shirt for every day of your trip
  • 1-2 pairs of black dress pants (Ladies: swap one for a skirt or dress!)
  • 1 suit jacket
  • 1 set of clean undergarments for every day of your trip
  • 2-3 pairs of socks
  • 1 pair of work shoes
  • Loungewear (something to sleep in)
  • Chargers, adapters (if needed)
  • Large cosmetics (store these in a clear plastic bag)

Since your carry-on is the larger of your two bags, you’ll want to use it pack your biggest items. This includes things like shoes, a heavy laptop, and bulky clothing or cosmetics. You can also use it to pack things that you won’t need to access until you arrive — which might also include chargers and adapters. When packing cosmetics, keep in mind the size requirements and use small travel bottles to avoid having any issues.

Plan on wearing something comfortable to travel in and optimize your baggage space for nice workwear so it stays folded and fresh. When packing for short trips, bring things that can serve more than one purpose — this will help you pack less. For example, your travel clothes might also be what you wear to grab a drink after work with colleagues. Or if you have an overnight flight, maybe you travel in your loungewear that you can also wear to sleep in your hotel room. The same goes for shoes. Try not to bring more than two pairs for short trips. Shoes take up a lot of room in small bags, so by wearing one comfortable pair and packing a more formal pair, you’ll be able to save space and cut down on the weight you carry .

When it comes to packing your laptop, be sure to keep it somewhere accessible where you won’t have to tear apart your clothes to find it. You’ll probably need to pull your laptop out during multiple airport security checks, and you may even want it handy to do a bit of work (or binge on Netflix) while waiting to board the plane . Some travelers prefer to store their laptops in their personal items for easier access. Think about how often you’ll need your laptop and which bag makes the most sense for you.

Personal item

In addition to a carry-on item, most airlines also allow one free personal item. This is typically a much smaller bag, like a backpack or purse that fits under the seat in front of you. Since you’ll want to avoid checking a bag, take advantage of this freebie as a way to save money and carry your extra stuff. Just be sure to choose a bag that fits your needs, and your preferred airline’s size requirements.

Things you’ll want to pack in your personal item

When packing your personal item, try to include the small items you’ll need or want to access during your flight . You should also use it to store any small valuables. Here’s a packing checklist to help you get started:

  • Passport (or ID)
  • Some of the  best travel credit cards
  • Boarding passes
  • Tablet (or E-reader)
  • Chargers (for phone/tablet)
  • Ear-buds/headphones

When deciding what clothes to pack for a business trip, make sure you have something to wear to every scheduled event while still avoiding overpacking . The key is to bring versatile pieces you can mix and match for various occasions that easily transition from day to night. Also, wrinkle-free materials are always a plus.

Best Slacks

Everlane tencel way-high taper pant.

Our favorite women's slacks for travel come from Everlane. As the name suggests, Way-High Taper Pants have a high-rise waist with side pockets and flattering, professional-looking pleats. Sustainably sourced from wood pulp, the ultra-soft, wrinkle-resistant Tencel lyocell fabric is perfect for packing.

Best Business-casual Trousers

Athleta brooklyn ankle pants.

For something that leans more business-casual, go with the Brooklyn Ankle Pant. These soft, stretchy trousers are comfy enough to wear on the plane yet sophisticated enough to wear to a business meeting or networking event. We also love that they come in an inclusive range of 16 sizes in regular, tall, and petite fits.

Best Blouse

Quince silk notch collar blouse.

Made of 90 percent silk and 10 percent spandex, this blouse drapes perfectly, and has a subtle sheen and a nice stretch. It's easy to tuck into skirts or pants, while the tailored collar elevates any professional ensemble. Best of all, the washable design is nowhere near as delicate as most silk shirts.

Best Sleeveless Top

M.m.lafleur the nora top.

M.M.LaFleur

If you're traveling to a warmer climate or just need more daytime options, this one's for you. The Nora Top is a drapey, boat-neck, sleeveless shirt that promises to resist wrinkling, while an anti-odor finish helps prevent smelly armpits during your next meeting. It also layers beautifully under a blazer and is conveniently machine-washable.

Best Day-to-night Dress

Modern citizen iman cotton twill split-hem dress.

Modern Citizen

The best clothes for business travel transition seamlessly from day to night — that's why we love Modern Citizen's super-versatile Iman Dress. The flattering silhouette is slightly fitted but definitely not too tight, with ruching at the waist and a split hem in the back that ensures you can move around with ease. You can wear this dress on its own, with a blazer, or under a long coat.

Best Sweater

Banana republic bella merino sweater polo.

Banana Republic

It's always good to have a nice sweater on hand during a business trip. We love this one from Banana Republic, which is made of 100 percent merino wool. It features a pull-over design with a folded camp-style collar and a slightly relaxed fit that's easy to tuck into pants, or wear untucked if you prefer a more casual look.

Best Blazer

Spanx the perfect blazer.

Saks Fifth Avenue

Appropriately dubbed "The Perfect Blazer," this versatile outerwear piece from Spanx is just the thing for your next work trip. It's made of stretchy, smoothing ponte fabric and features a slightly longer cut that layers beautifully over virtually any top. The easy-going material is also machine-washable and a breeze to care for — no dry-cleaning necessary.

Best Overcoat

Loft two button coat.

For something a bit warmer, reach for the Two Button Coat. It has a relaxed fit that layers effortlessly over any professional outfit, while notched lapels, flap pockets, and a button closure offer a professional appeal. This coat is also machine-washable, so you don't have to worry about dry-cleaning.

Best Trousers

Lululemon commission pant.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a guy who doesn't prefer these pants over regular trousers — lululemon knows a thing or two about travel pants . And in true lululemon fashion, they're made of a breathable, sweat-wicking, non-wrinkling performance material. But thanks to the traditional fly, belt loops, and snap-button pockets, they look just like any other business-ready pants.

Best Chinos

Bearbottom stretch chino pant.

If the perfect chinos exist, you're looking at them. Woven from cotton with a hint of spandex, these midweight pants are structured and breathable with just the right amount of stretch. The tapered ankle makes them an ideal choice to wear with business-casual sneakers, loafers, Oxfords, or Chelsea boots.

Best Button-down

Untuckit wrinkle-free performance gironde shirt.

If you're looking for wrinkle-proof shirts for business trips, UntuckIt has you covered. Not only does the Gironde Shirt never need ironing, but it also wicks away sweat and is the perfect length to wear untucked with your work pants of choice. You might want something that tucks in for evening looks, but this is undoubtedly a great daytime option you'll be glad to have at the ready.

Best Dress Shirt

Bonobos desk to dinner shirt.

As the name implies, the Desk To Dinner Shirt can be worn all day at business meetings, then into the night while schmoozing with clients over dinner or drinks. The slim-fit design can be tucked into pants or worn untucked for a more laid-back look, and you can count on the collar to stay in place no matter how you wear it — or how long.

Suitsupply Pleated Vigo Trousers

Suitsupply's Vigo Trousers feature a high-rise waist and a tailored, slim-fit cut with a single pleat down the front and modern cuffed ankles. Shoes take up a lot of space in a suitcase, so you'll want to bring no more than two or three pairs, including what you wear en route to your destination. Think ahead to the meetings or events you'll be attending, consider the formality of each occasion, and prioritize comfort.

Naturalizer Samantha d'Orsay Flat

These sleek pointed-toe flats are more than just flattering and versatile — they're also exceptionally comfy. Boasting contoured footbeds with arch support, cushioning, and full-foot flexibility, they'll keep your feet happy for hours on end.

Nisolo makes our favorite women's loafers. Featuring a feminine d'Orsay silhouette, the Emma is a polished, easy-on loafer that goes with just about any professional attire. These shoes also have cushioned, shock-absorbing insoles, and you can bet the genuine leather uppers will conform to the shape of your feet for the perfect fit.

Neiman Marcus

These timeless pumps from Marion Parke can be worn with everything from ankle pants and pleated trousers to pencil skirts and dresses. What's more, the slim silhouette won't take up much space in your suitcase. This footwear brand is expensive, but it's known for its remarkably comfortable styles, each featuring contoured insoles with adaptable cushioning and pressure relief for the balls of your feet.

Best Travel-day Shoes

Vionic slip-on sneaker.

If you need comfortable shoes to wear on the plane but still want to look put-together, Vionic's Zinah Sneaker might be your best bet. The laceless, slip-on design boasts a sleek, laid-back aesthetic resembling a cross between a tennis shoe and a flat. Thanks to the brand's podiatrist-designed arch support, you can bet these shoes won't hurt your feet.

Cole Haan Osborn Grand 360 Penny Loafer

When it comes to men's loafers , you really can't go wrong with Cole Haan. This classic, clean-cut pair features smooth leather uppers and a structured silhouette with traditional stitching. With OrthoLite footbeds, you can count on next-level cushioning, arch support, and antimicrobial odor resistance.

Best Dress Shoes

Moral Code Kai Sneaker

For travel days, we recommend the Kai Sneaker from Moral Code. These laid-back yet professional-looking shoes have smooth leather uppers that wipe clean in a pinch, durable rubber outsoles, and padded footbeds that promise to conform to the shape of your foot to keep you comfortable with every step.

The right accessories are crucial for business trips. Still, you want to avoid bringing more than you'll actually use, as overpacking will just weigh you down during your busy schedule. Here's what we recommend.

Nordstrom Marco Burnished Leather Belt

Don't forget to pack a belt for your business trip. Even if you're not sure which outfit you'll need it for, you'll be glad to have it when the occasion arises — plus it takes up almost no space in your suitcase. Consider this classic burnished leather one, and order it one size larger than your typical pants size.

Best Wallet

Leatherology slim zip travel wallet.

Leatherology's Slim Zip Travel Wallet is made of buttery-soft, full-grain leather and comes in your choice of several tasteful hues. It has seven card slots, three bill compartments for things like cash and receipts, and a spacious main compartment big enough to fit your phone, boarding pass, or passport. We also appreciate that it zips up to keep everything secure.

Best Travel Tech Kit

Mark & graham essential tech folio.

Mark & Graham

This clever leather pouch makes it easy to stay organized when traveling with lots of tech gadgets. With multiple compartments, sleeves, and pockets, you'll have a designated spot for your phone, tablet, charging cables, earbuds, stylus pen, important cards, and then some.

Best Portable Charger

Nimble champ portable charger.

"I always travel with a portable cellphone battery charger," Dandashy says. With this in mind, we recommend packing the Nimble Champ. This compact, on-the-go charger weighs less than half a pound and boasts super-fast charging that takes you from zero to 80 percent battery life in just 30 minutes. It can even charge two devices at once.

Best Water Bottle

Monos kiyo uvc bottle.

Dandashy says she always brings a reusable water bottle on business trips. We like this one from Monos, which calls on ultraviolet technology to kill over 99.9 percent of bacteria in your drinking water. We admit this is a lot to spend on a water bottle, but it might be worth it for the built-in purification system, plus it's backed by a two-year warranty.

The best luggage for business trips is lightweight, functional, and professional-looking. Whether you opt to carry on or check your baggage, we strongly suggest keeping your valuables with you, whether in a carry-on suitcase or "personal item" bag .

Best Carry-on

July carry on pro snapsleeve.

July's Carry On Pro was built for business travel. This compact yet spacious suitcase flaunts a crush-proof polycarbonate shell, an extra-long telescoping handle, and smooth-rolling spinner wheels. There's a hidden laundry bag inside, an ejectable USB power bank, and an external magnetic compartment for your laptop that detaches with the press of a button when you need to remove it when going through security. The price is a little steep for the size, but it's backed by a lifetime warranty.

Best Checked Suitcase

Solgaard check-in closet.

For those who want to check their bags, we suggest the Solgaard Check-In Closet. This mid-sized suitcase has a nearly unbreakable polycarbonate shell and a built-in shelving system with five compartments and compression straps that help you pack as much as possible. We like that you can remove and hang up the closet system for easy access during your trip.

Best Packing Cubes

Away the insider packing cubes.

Away is a go-to for high-quality luggage at reasonable price points. Designed to compress your belongings, the brand's Insider Packing Cubes allow you to fit more into your suitcase while simplifying the packing and unpacking process. Made of nylon with mesh panels on top, they're breathable and water-resistant while making it easy to see what's inside.

Best Toiletry Bag

Dagne dover hunter toiletry bag.

Dagne Dover

The Hunter Toiletry Bag is made of water-resistant neoprene with large, smooth-gliding zippers that'll never get stuck. Available in two sizes, this multi-compartment satchel is just the thing for packing and organizing your toothbrush, razor, shampoo, deodorant, skin care products, comb, contact lenses — you name it.

Best Laptop Bag

Calpak haven laptop tote bag.

If you need something to carry your laptop on the plane or to and from meetings, the Haven Tote is an excellent choice. Made of easy-to-clean faux leather, it has a spacious main compartment, a large pocket for your computer or tablet, and three smaller pockets for all the little things you want to keep within reach. "I always pack hand sanitizer, a water bottle, a few packs of gum, and vitamins," Dandashy says. There's also an external trolley sleeve for when you want to slide it onto the handle of your suitcase.

According to Dandashy, the best way to pack a suit is to put it in a garment bag and bring it as your carry-on. This will help you avoid folding it up and having to iron it when you arrive. Of course, this may not always be an option.

"If you must pack it in a suitcase, carefully fold your suit with tissue paper," says Dandashy, explaining that this helps prevent wrinkles and keeps the fabric looking immaculate. "Pop out each shoulder, and fold the suit backward so that the lapels touch. Place tissue paper on either side of the jacket, carefully folding it into thirds." Then fold the pants lengthwise, placing tissue paper in between the folds.

Wrinkle-free clothing materials are usually made at least partially of synthetic fibers, like spandex, nylon, and elastane. This gives a garment more stretch and flexibility, which ultimately prevents wrinkling and creasing. Ponte and other jersey knits also resist wrinkling. If you prefer natural fabrics, consider bamboo-derived textiles or lyocell, which is sourced from wood pulp.

Business travel can be both exciting and stressful. Having the right items with you can make your trip more comfortable and productive. In this article, we will provide you with the ultimate packing list for business travelers, ensuring that you have everything you need for a successful trip.

Editor’s Note: This article was partially generated using AI technology.

When it comes to professional attire, it’s good to consider the level of formality of your trip. Business suits are a professional staple, providing a polished and put-together look for any occasion. For a more business casual situation, dress shirts and blouses paired with slacks or a skirt are a good option. Pieces that can be dressed up or down, like a linen blazer or a black dress , allow you to create multiple outfits with minimal packing.

In terms of outerwear, consider the climate of your destination. Blazers and suit jackets are popular choices, providing a structured and put-together look. Sweaters can be worn over dress shirts or blouses for a relaxed yet professional appearance. For colder destinations, a tailored option like a peacoat or a well-fitting lightweight puffer jacket will do the trick.

For footwear, consider dress shoes such as oxfords, loafers, pumps, flats, or dressy boots. It is important to choose shoes that are appropriate for the workplace while still being comfortable enough for any sightseeing you have planned.

In addition to business attire, pack a few casual items for after-hours activities and for the flight. These can include comfortable pants , jeans , t-shirts , and sweaters .

The ultimate business trip packing checklist should always include:

  • Business suits
  • Professional dress shirts and blouses
  • Slacks and dress pants
  • Skirts and dresses
  • Jackets and sweaters
  • Shoes (at least two pairs)
  • Socks and underwear
  • A tie and belt (if applicable)
  • A scarf (if applicable)
  • A hat (if applicable)

It is essential to pack toiletries for a business trip, especially if you will be away for more than a few days. Consider packing items such as:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Soap and body wash
  • Razors and shaving cream
  • Hairbrush and comb
  • Facial cleanser and moisturizer
  • Makeup and cosmetics
  • Menstrual products
  • Skincare products (including facial cleanser and sunscreen )
  • Contact lenses and solution (if applicable)
  • Prescription medications

When it comes to personal hygiene and self-care, it is essential to have a few items on hand. The most basic necessities include a toothbrush , toothpaste , shampoo , conditioner , soap, body wash , deodorant , and any skincare products part of your typical routine. For those who prefer a clean-shaven look, don’t forget your razors and shaving cream.

For hair care, bring along a hairbrush or comb , hair styling tools , and any hair products you use on a daily basis.

Lastly, individuals who require prescription medications should always have them readily available. Pack any necessary medication in your carry-on or personal item to ensure that they reach your destination safely.

  • Cell phone and charger
  • Any necessary external hard drives or flash drives
  • Power cords and adaptors
  • Portable Wi-Fi device
  • Portable charger

A laptop is a must-have for any business traveler as it allows you to work on important tasks and stay connected with your colleagues and clients. Additionally, a cell phone is essential for communication and a tablet can be useful for reading documents or presentations on the go.

Headphones can be useful for listening to music on the plane or taking calls in noisy environments. A portable Wi-Fi device can provide you with reliable internet access while on the move. Lastly, a portable charger can be a lifesaver when you are running low on battery power without an outlet in sight.

Be sure to bring important travel documents on your business trip, such as your passport, driver’s license, copies of your itinerary, and tickets. In addition to these typical travel necessities, make sure to print out any contracts, reports, or presentations you may need for your trip. Keep all of these documents in a folder or bag that you can easily access.

Miscellaneous Business Essentials

When traveling for work, make sure to pack all the business travel essentials needed to complete your job for the duration of the trip. This can include additional accessories like a briefcase or laptop bag , business cards, notebooks , and pens . If you’re giving a presentation, make sure to bring all the necessary equipment and materials, such as presentation notes, cables, and extra batteries .

Lastly, make sure to bring any industry or job-specific items that your work may require, such as name tags, ID cards, building keys, specialized gear or equipment, or uniforms.

Essentials for Every Business Trip

Travel documents.

Ensure you have all necessary travel documents, such as:

  • Passport: Make sure it’s valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.
  • Visas: Check whether you need a visa for the country you’re visiting and apply well in advance.
  • Driver’s License: Carry it with you, especially if you plan to rent a car during your trip.
  • Travel Insurance: Protect yourself against unforeseen events like accidents, flight cancellations, and lost luggage by getting travel insurance.
  • Itinerary & Flights: Print or save your itinerary, along with your flight details and boarding passes.

Travel Gear

The right gear can make all the difference in keeping you organized and comfortable during your business trip:

  • Carry-On Luggage: Opt for a high-quality, lightweight luggage piece that fits airline specifications.
  • Packing Cubes: Use these to keep your clothes sorted and wrinkle-free.
  • Comfort Items: Pack a travel pillow, eye mask, and earplugs for more pleasant flights.
  • Toiletry Bag: Choose a clear, TSA-approved bag for hassle-free security checks.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated by bringing your own refillable water bottle.

Electronics & Accessories

You’ll need your devices and gadgets to stay connected and productive:

  • Laptop & Charger: Don’t forget your workhorse, along with a suitable charger.
  • Smartphone & Charger: Keep your phone charged with the right cable and plug.
  • Power Bank: A portable charger can save you from your devices dying when you need them the most.
  • Adapters & Converters: Double-check what type of plug/socket is used at your destination and pack the appropriate adapters.
  • Noise-Canceling Headphones: These help you focus and reduce stress on noisy flights or in busy environments.

Health & Hygiene Items

Taking care of your well-being while traveling is paramount:

  • Hand Sanitizer & Wipes: Keep germs at bay by regularly sanitizing your hands and wiping down surfaces.
  • Face Masks: Bring a few comfortable and breathable face masks for use on public transport and in crowded spaces.
  • First-Aid Kit: Take a compact first-aid kit with essential items like band-aids, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications.
  • Personal Toiletries: Bring travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and so on to maintain your routine.
  • Packable Laundry Bag: Separate your dirty clothes from the clean ones with a foldable laundry bag.

Packing for Professional Needs

Attire planning.

When packing for a business trip, consider the dress code of your destination. If the trip involves formal meetings or conferences, pack suits or blazers, dress pants or skirts, dress shirts or blouses, and ties or scarves. Don’t forget comfortable yet stylish shoes to match your outfits. It’s also a good idea to bring a few casual outfits for downtime or less formal events.

Tips for packing clothes :

  • Choose versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched.
  • Opt for wrinkle-resistant fabrics to minimize ironing.
  • Roll your clothes or use packing cubes to save space.
  • Pack a small laundry bag for used garments.

Climate-aware packing

No one wants to be caught off-guard by unexpected weather changes. So, here’s a quick list to help you pack:

  • Cold weather : Warm coat, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, thermal wear, gloves, woolen socks, and waterproof shoes
  • Warm weather : Light clothes, short sleeve shirts, comfortable shoes, and sunglasses
  • Rainy weather : Waterproof jacket, umbrella, and waterproof shoes

Don’t forget to check for any extreme weather conditions or seasonal changes while packing.

Dressing for cultural norms

Consider the local guidelines of your destination’s dress code, especially if they differ from your own. Some countries have strict cultural dress codes that you’ll need to follow to show respect and avoid offending locals. For example, if you’re visiting a conservative country, you might need to avoid revealing clothes and pack more modest attire.

To help with understanding cultural norms, here are a few considerations:

  • Business meetings : When attending business meetings, you must wear formal or semi-formal clothing, unless specified otherwise.
  • Site visits : If your trip involves visiting certain venues or work sites, make sure to pack any required safety gear or specific clothing in your luggage.
  • Social events : Understand the dress code for any social events you’ll be attending, like galas or networking activities, and pack appropriate attire.
  • Religious sites : When visiting religious sites, it’s vital to show respect by dressing modestly and following their specific guidelines.

Work Equipment Necessities

Besides your clothes, you’ll need to pack essential work equipment. Ensure you have your laptop, charger, smartphone, and any necessary accessories, like a portable mouse or USB drive. Don’t forget power adapters if you’re traveling internationally.

Here’s a checklist of work-related items to pack:

  • Laptop and charger
  • Smartphone and charger
  • Portable power bank
  • International power adapter
  • Earbuds or noise-cancelling headphones
  • Small notebook and pen
  • Business cards
  • Portable Wi-Fi hotspot (optional)

Smart Packing Techniques

Layered packing.

One great way to pack efficiently is by using the layered packing technique. Start with heavier items at the bottom of your suitcase, then work your way up with lighter items. For example, place shoes, toiletry bags, and heavy electronics first, followed by clothing layers like jeans and jackets. Finally, place lighter items like shirts, underwear, and accessories on top. This method helps to distribute the weight of your items evenly and prevent delicate items from being crushed.

Rolling vs Folding

When it comes to packing clothes, the age-old debate is often between rolling and folding . Both methods have their merits, but we recommend giving rolling a try. Rolling your clothes saves space and helps to prevent wrinkles. To roll your clothes, lay each item flat, fold it in half, then roll it tightly from the bottom up. Rolling works best for lightweight and wrinkle-prone items like t-shirts, dresses, and blouses. However, for bulkier items like jeans and sweaters, folding may work better and provide a neater appearance in your suitcase.

Utilizing Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are another fantastic tool for keeping your belongings organized and compact. These lightweight and durable cubes come in various sizes and can be used to separate different types of items. For example, you can use one cube for your shirts, another for pants, and another for accessories. They make it easy to locate items quickly and help keep everything tidy throughout your trip. You can even color-coordinate your packing cubes for an extra level of organization.

Staying Organized on the Move

Packing for a business trip requires careful planning and organization to ensure a smooth experience. Here are some tips and examples to help you stay organized while traveling for work:

1. Create a packing list: Before you begin packing, create a comprehensive packing list to ensure you don’t forget any essential items. Include clothing, toiletries, electronics, work-related items, and travel documents. You can save time by keeping a digital list that you can reference and update for each trip.

2. Use packing cubes: Invest in a set of packing cubes to help keep your belongings organized within your suitcase. Packing cubes are small, lightweight bags that come in various sizes, making it easy to sort your clothes and accessories efficiently.

3. Roll your clothes: To save space and keep your clothes wrinkle-free, consider rolling your attire instead of folding them. Rolled clothing takes up less space and helps prevent wrinkles, which is especially important for business attire.

4. Limit your footwear: Shoes can be bulky and take up a lot of space in your suitcase, so it’s beneficial to minimize the number of pairs you bring on your trip. Aim to bring two versatile pairs of shoes – one for formal meetings or events and another for casual outings.

5. Keep your essentials in your carry-on: Prepare for unexpected scenarios, such as lost or delayed luggage, by keeping your essential items in your carry-on bag. These items include important documents, medication, a change of clothes, and any items you might need to work during your flight.

6. Organize your electronics: Use a small organizer or pouch to keep your electronic accessories, such as charging cables, adapters, and headphones, in one place to prevent them from getting tangled or misplaced.

Coping with Common Travel Hurdles

  • Lost luggage? First thing’s first, make sure you pack a small bag with essentials (like toiletries, important documents, and a change of clothes) and keep it with you as a carry-on. This way, even if your main luggage gets lost, you’ll still have your most crucial items with you.
  • Jet lag got you down? Stay hydrated, and try to get on local time as quickly as possible. Drinking plenty of water during and after the flight can combat dehydration, a stealthy contributor to jet lag. To help you adjust faster, expose yourself to daylight for brief periods and focus on getting a good night’s sleep.
  • Wrinkled clothes? Pack smart by rolling clothes instead of folding them. This saves space and helps reduce wrinkles. Invest in a decent travel-size garment steamer or carry wrinkle-release spray to keep your clothes looking fresh and professional upon arrival.
  • Forgot an adapter? Make a mental note to pack a universal adapter for all your electronic devices, so you don’t have to stress when it’s time to charge. In case you forget, don’t panic! Most hotels will have adapters available for guests to use or purchase.
  • Managing expenses: Keep track of all your receipts and expenses on the go. Take photos of receipts with your phone and use an app to help you organize them. It will simplify the reimbursement process and save you the headache of managing slips of paper.
  • Feeling under the weather? It can happen, especially with all the stress and germs hiding in airports and airplanes. Make sure to pack a small first-aid kit with the most commonly used over-the-counter medications, band-aids, and antibacterial wipes or gel for quick sanitation.

Tech and Electronics

There’s a lot to consider here, especially if you’re speaking or running an event or workshop. My attitude when traveling for work was it was already better to have my own equipment rather than rely on someone else.

I would even travel with my own HDMI cable and Macbook convertor because I lost count of the number of times I’d show up at a space and they wouldn’t have the right tech. Pack accordingly, and consider the following items.

13. Main Laptop and Charger

14. Backup Laptop and Charger

You may struggle for space, but even an ultraportable laptop, tablet, or older laptop as a failsafe as a backup, just in case, will give you peace of mind in case your main laptop has an issue.

15. Business Phone and Charger

16. Personal Phone and Charger

17. Tablet and Charger

I found having a tablet always helped at conferences and speaking events. It can be used as an additional screen, a place to refer to your notes, or you can use it with projectors if your main laptop doesn’t work.

18. Portable Battery

Both a lifesaver on long flights and at events where you may not have proximity or access to a power socket. Remember to charge it fully the night before you fly or go to your event. It works as a portable battery for both your laptop and your phone.

19. Multi-Charger

Traveling with a multi-charger was a real game-changer for me. It was not uncommon for me to have to charge three, four, or even five devices all at once when traveling for work. Having one unit to change everything from just makes life easier, especially in hotel rooms or at airport lounges.

20. Travel Adapter

An essential if you’re traveling abroad, I would also recommend getting one that comes with a universal power strip.

21. Travel Router

Public wifi can often be hit or miss, especially in hotels. If you’re willing to put the time in to set it up, a personal travel router can help strengthen your connection and give you your own access point.

22. Noise-Canceling Headphones

Whether it be for helping you sleep on a flight or getting focussed work down, both noise-canceling headphones and earbuds are a sound investment. I’ve had my Boise noise-canceling earbuds for years, and they still haven’t let me down.

23. Bluetooth Speaker

You’d be amazed at how many rooms and events have an issue with sound when it comes to talks and workshop events. If you can provide your own source of sound that is already synced up to your device, you give yourself another failsafe.

These items are not only suitable for plane travel but also for sleeping in hotel rooms and other accommodations. You never know how loud or uncomfortable a certain place or room may be.

24. Travel Pillow

25. Sleeping Mask

26. Earplugs

27. Collapsible Water Bottle

You can generally fill up your water bottle from water fountains for free at airports and bus stations.

28. Travel Blanket

29. Anti-Nausea Bands

30. Snack Pack

Snacks like nuts, protein bars, and chopped fruit are easy to travel with and can give you something to eat if there are no options around you.

Entertainment

For that time on the plane or evenings in the hotel room, once you’re happy everything has been prepared, you’ll need ways to relax and unwind. Make sure you have ways to entertain yourself, and consider the following.

31. Fire TV Stick

Most new hotel TVs now have HDMI and USB port access, meaning you can bring the likes of a Fire TV stick with you, plug it in, connect to the internet, and watch shows.

32. Pre-downloaded Offline Shows and Movies

33. Pre-Downloaded Offline Playlist

34. Kindle Paperwhite

35. Travel Journal

Glasses and Eyewear

If you wear glasses or contacts, make sure you pack the following items in your luggage.

36. Glasses with Case

37. Backup Pair of Glasses

38. Contact Lenses

39. Eyeglass Repair Kit

How long your business trip is and the type of travel you’ll be doing will generally determine how much luggage you will need. If you can get away with a carry-on and backpack or briefcase, try to travel lighter.

Sometimes, however, for international or longer trips, you will need a combination of a suitcase, carry-on, and other luggage to bring everything with you. Here are some considerations.

40. Lightweight Suitcase

How long you are going for will really depend on whether you need to bring checked luggage with you. When I traveled for business, I typically had a lot of expensive tech with me, so I had no choice but to bring a suitcase with me along with my backpack and carry-on.

If you have a lot to pack, or your business travel is more than a weekend or few days, definitely consider packing a lightweight suitcase that is easy to maneuver.

41. Carry On

The carry-on is so often the go-to for business travel. Many frequent business travelers vouch for packing lighter and trying to keep everything in their carry-on to save space and time.

42. Briefcase with Slide

A briefcase with a slide can be easily carried over your carry-on handle, keeping your other hand free.

43. Anti-Theft Backpack

Especially if you’re traveling with a laptop and expensive tech, consider an anti-theft backpack to keep your valuables safe.

44. Garment Bag

If traveling with a suit or expensive dress, consider a garment bag to keep it protected and clean.

45. Packing Cubes

I never travel without packing cubes. While their ability to save space may be a myth, they are so good for organizing your luggage.

Conference/Meeting Clothing

Depending on the type of conference or event you’re attending, you’ll want to pack smart and appropriate clothing, especially if you’re going to have an audience.

Also, consider the number of days the event or conference is and the number of certain items you’ll need to pack. Some of these items of clothing and accessories can help give you ideas.

46. Suit Jacket

47. Waistcoat

52. Pencil Dress

53. Pencil Skirt

54. Jumpsuit

57. Coat or Jacket

58. Underwear

59. Sewing Repair Kit

In case something rips or tears, it’s always good to have a repair kit handy so that you can fix clothing from your accommodation or hotel room.

Networking/Dinner Clothing

Depending on the nature of the event, dinner or social gatherings will have a different vibe and dress code.

You may be able to wear what you have on during the day. However, consider packing some of the following, which may be more suitable for dinner, drinks, and informal gatherings. You may also want to change clothes between the business event and the evening event.

60. Smart Casual Shirt

61. Smart Casual Top

63. Slacks (or Jeans)

Downtime Clothing

Outside of business hours, you’ll want to feel relaxed and comfortable at the hotel or in the city. Yes, put a lot of thought into your business or meeting attire, but also make sure to pack clothing for the evenings and in your downtime.

65. Casual Dresses

67. Pants or Jogging Bottoms

68. Workout Clothes

69. Pajamas

70. Spare Underwear

71. Rain Jacket

72. Swimsuit/wear

If there’s a pool at the hotel, you may want to go for a swim for some much-needed downtime.

To go with both your business and casual attire, consider what footwear you would need to pack. You may be able to get away with one smart pair of shoes, or you may have to pack multiple pairs to work with different outfits.

73. Brogues

74. Loafers

78. Trainers or Sneakers

If you’re only traveling with a carry-on, you will need to limit the toiletries you travel with or make sure the toiletries you do travel with can come on the plane with you. Make sure liquids are packed into 3.4-ounce (100ml) bottles, and you will need to forgo accessories such as razors.

If you have a checked bag, you can travel with a large toiletries bag. It’s important to look and feel your best for business meetings and events, so travel with all your essential and desired toiletries. That way, you can focus all your time on the job at hand.

79. Toiletries Bag/Case which could contain:

  • Solid Shampoo
  • Solid Conditioner
  • Shower Gel and/or Soap
  • Moisturizer
  • Perfume/Cologne
  • Shaving Cream
  • Feminine Hygiene Products
  • Nail Clippers and File
  • Stain Remover Stick

You should always look and feel your best self, no matter what your business trip entails. For both your hair and skin, consider packing the following in a separate pouch or weekender bag that you can put in your suitcase or carry on.

81. Makeup Remover

82. Hair Dryer

83. Hair Straightener

84. Curling Iron

85. Hairbrush

86. Hairstyling Products

If you’re planning to travel with jewelry, make sure you have a stylish and sturdy case to carry it in.

87. Jewelry Case to carry:

Reward and Loyalty Schemes

If you frequently travel for business, you could be missing out on upgrades, hotel stays, and free flights if you’re not a member of reward and loyalty programs. Consider the following:

88. Rewards Credit Card

Whether it’s through your company or your own personal business, booking with a credit card with rewards and points will only make your business trips more comfortable and enjoyable.

In time, you can use your points and rewards to upgrade on flights, book hotel stays, and gain access to the likes of co-working memberships.

89. TSA Pre-Check, Clear, and Global Entry

Several of the business travelers I spoke to for our business travel tips article recommended the TSA pre-check, clear, and global entry membership for fast and efficient boarding and moving through airports.

90. Air Miles Membership

If you consistently fly with the same airplane or family of airlines, definitely sign up for a frequent flyer membership.

91. Lounge Pass

Airport lounges offer food, comfort, and lots of perks. If you fly for business frequently, have a look at these ways to get airport lounge access to see what the best option would be for you.

92. Co-Working Membership

Hotel wifi can be slow and hotels uncomfortable. If you need to get work done on your business trip, consider a co-working pass or membership that gives you access to multiple locations, such as WeWork.

93. Pre-Booked Access to Meeting Room

In addition to your co-working membership, be sure you have a quiet place booked that only you have access to for calls and meetings.

Naturally, only you are going to know what you need for your upcoming business trip. However, here are some classic items and essentials to consider taking with you.

Have everything written down or documented beforehand, in a diary, on a separate sheet in a folder, or digitally recorded in your calendar.

95. Business Cards

It may be a little old school, but business cards are still a great way to pass on your information to start a conversation outside of the event.

96. Contact Details (Physical or Digital)

Nowadays, people will want to take your phone, email, or other details. Have something physical or digital ready to give to people when they ask.

97. USB Stick or Portable Hard Drive

Keep your files and important documents for the event both on your machine and on a separate stick or hard drive for easy access.

98. Powerpoint/Slide Deck/Presentation

Keep multiple copies of this on both your laptop and external devices. Also, double-check your connectivity and whether you have the right setup and cables.

99. Company Branded Stationary/Merch

If you are representing your company or a client, consider bringing stationary and merch with you to give to people.

100. Pen and Notepad

Digital and Security

Lastly, security, both physical and digital, should be a big consideration when traveling for business. Go that extra mile to protect yourself and give yourself a little more peace of mind.

101. VPN Account

Security is paramount when traveling for work, and using public wifis without protection can be very risky. To this day, I still use Express VPN to give me protection when working from coffee shops, hotels, and co-working spaces abroad.

102. Password Manager

103. Data Bundle from Phone Provider

Check with your provider how much data you have with your monthly contract. You may need to use your phone as a hotspot if the wifi is weak or not accessible.

104. SIM with Pre-Loaded Data

If you’re traveling abroad and your provider isn’t giving you a good deal, consider buying a SIM with data in the place you are traveling to.

105. USB Data Blocker

When using public USB ports for charging, such as in airports, use a data blocker like this one for USB Type A or this one for USB Type C to stop potential downloads of your data.

106. Travel Safe

For keys, flash drives, credit cards, and other smaller valuables, you could travel with a portable safe.

107. Contents and Business Insurance

Double-check what your travel or business insurance covers you for when working away from home, and if required, change your policy accordingly.

How to Pack for a Business Trip: A Travel Packing Checklist

Whether your packing for your first business trip or your 500th, there are always upgrades you can make to your packing plans and travel gear to make your trip as easy and comfortable as possible. Follow along and you'll be ready to take on your trip like the most seasoned travelers.

Business Trip Packing Checklist

Choosing the Right Luggage & Bags for Business Travel

Your whole trip can hinge around whether or not you select the appropriate bags for your trip. After all, making sure that your clothing, electronics, and material or equipment get to your destination safe and sound is one of the most important aspects of travel. Here are a few popular luggage options for both check bags and cabin bags.

The Classic Rolling Suitcase

There are many variations of the rolling suitcase that are fit to serve a variety of purposes. If you’re going on an extended business trip, these are probably the way to go. Roller suitcases are the most efficient way to pack and transport everything you need for your trip.

Duffle Bags

The duffle bag is an ideal travel bag for a short business trip. The large open space provides enough room for just about all the clothing that you’d need for a night or two away. It’s best to pair these with a laptop bag or briefcase since they don’t have the structure to protect your valuables.

Choosing the Right Carry-On Bags for Business Travel

Most airlines allow you a complimentary carry-on bag, so it would be silly to not take advantage of that. In fact, many people only bring carry-on bags to avoid waiting for baggage check. Others will check a larger bag and pack a smaller laptop bag or backpack for the flight.

Briefcases and Messanger Bags

The briefcase is a classic business travel staple. These have evolved over the years and gotten smarter. Some briefcases that are meant for travel have built-in features like portable chargers and straps that connect to your rolling luggage bag.

They say backpacks are the new briefcases! Backpacks are becoming increasingly commonplace in the workplace, especially on business trips. That’s because backpacks typically do a better job at protecting your electronics and other valuables while keeping your hands free.

What to Pack for a Business Trip

Okay, so now that you’ve got your bags and packing accessories ready to go its time to fill them up with all the right apparel and accessories to make your trip go as seamlessly as possible. Here’s a checklist that will make sure you don’t have to make a trip to the mall right when you land.

Clothing Checklist

Packing for a business trip can be tricky. You don’t want your nice clothes to get wrinkled or creased, but you don’t want to wear uncomfortable and restrictive clothing while traveling either. To save space a good rule of thumb is to always wear your bulkiest clothing on the flight! Here’s a business trip packing list to get you started on the rest:

  • Jacket or Blazer:  even if your business trip is more casual in nature, it's always a good idea to pack a nice jacket or blazer. It's the perfect way to class up any outfit if a more formal occasion presents itself.
  • Dress Pants or Skirt:  this may go without saying because it would be especially shocking if you showed up to your meeting without any bottoms on!
  • Dress Shirt or Blouse: another garment that may go without saying, but we don't want to be responsible for you not having anything to wear to your meeting.
  • Sweater or Sweatshirt: after a long day at work on your business trip there’s nothing better than changing into a comfy sweatshirt. They’re also great to wear on the plane…
  • Comfy Travel Outfit: some people like to class it up on the plane. We’re more of the sweatpants and a comfortable hoodie type.
  • Shoes: you probably don’t need to pack any more than two pairs – one for work and one for the plane or for exercise.
  • Underwear & Socks: these are the things you don’t want to run out of the most! Make sure you have a pair of underwear and socks packed for each day of your trip!
  • PJs or Sleepwear: hotel bedsheets can be coarse, uncomfortable, and sometimes even dirty. Sleeping in your favorite pajamas makes it all a bit more comfortable.
  • Workout Gear: most hotels have fitness rooms that you can take advantage of during downtime of your business trip.

Accessories & Personal Items Checklist

When it comes to traveling for work, accessories are necessities. Some of these things simply make your life easier, some its nearly impossible to live without!

  • Toiletries & Toiletry Case : don’t rely on the hotel-provided toiletries! Make sure to pack everything you’ll need to look your best. Don’t forget to bring travel size containers if you’re carrying on.
  • Water Bottle :   staying hydrated is key, especially when you’re traveling. Bringing a custom reusable water bottle is a great way to save on buying plastic water bottles.
  • Headphones :   don’t forget to pack a pair of headphones (especially if they’re noise-canceling) unless you want to make your flight feel twice as long!

Travel Accessories with Custom Printed Company Logos

  • Wall Phone Charger : you’ll need to make sure that your phone is charged up for important calls and emails since you will be away from your computer for much of the day. While we’re on the topic, don’t forget to bring your phone too!
  • Portable Phone Charger : same logic applies as the wall charger, but these come in especially handy when you’re on the plane, in the airport, or in a taxi or Uber.
  • Travel Umbrella : don’t get caught in the rain without one of these. There’s nothing worse than showing up to an important meeting soaking wet.
  • Sunglasses : this isn’t necessarily a must-have but they’re some of the most commonly forgotten accessories when traveling!

Work Supplies Checklist

With all the effort and energy that goes into packing your personal items its easy to forget that you are in fact taking this trip for a purpose. First and foremost, make sure to double and triple check that you have all the materials you need for your meeting, trade show, or conference packed or saved on your laptop. In addition to your relevant materials, here are a few more items that are smart to bring along.

  • Laptop & Laptop Case :  these days just about all business is conducted online in some way, shape, or form. Make sure that your computer is protected while traveling!
  • Notebook :   it's always nice to have a notebook or journal for notetaking when you don’t have your computer handy.
  • Pen :   the other component to notetaking, but you already knew that.

Water Bottle, Notebooks, Pen, Laptop

  • Business Cards : chances are you’ll be meeting new clients or colleagues on your trip, so it’s always a good idea to bring business cards to exchange.
  • USB Flash Drive : like trading business cards, USB flash drives are a great way to trade information. You can either pre-load these with a presentation/ offering and distribute them or you can gather information from others for yourself.

While we can’t guarantee the success of your meetings, if you follow this guide you should be all packed up and prepared to dominate your business trip! If you found this guide helpful be sure to check out our other planning guides and how-to guides as well.

Here’s Your Essential Business Trip Packing List

test 1

Business Trip Packing List

A business trip packing list doesn’t have to be complicated.

I stick to conservative classics and sharp suiting for any kind of work related travel, conference or client meeting. I always remember to pack a good blazer, a comfortable flat shoe, a pair of comfortable heels and some casual basics.

And of course, these all go in a carry on suitcase !

Best Work Wear Brands

If you’re on a budget, Ann Taylor , Club Monaco and Banana Republic routinely have sales and are a great place to shop for well made work clothes that are conservative enough for the office while still be flattering.

If you want high quality and don’t mind paying for a great dress that will last you years, I love M.M. LaFleur and Theory . Both make the most incredible fitted, slimming dresses that are chic and comfortable.

Other good quality work wear brands to check out: Tory Burch , Vince , Max Mara and Nordstrom . I usually pay more for suits and coats since a good quality one will last you years.

And then I’ll save by buying more inexpensive blouses, skirts and trousers which get worn more often and break down faster.

I have both the Theory Gabe Suit and the Theory Lanai suit and love both of them.

The Lanai blazer is “open cut” without any buttons but the blazer never flaps about and looks sharp yet distinctive. Every time I wear it, I get a nice comment from a stranger so it is definitely worth the money!

Fabric wise, they usually come in lots of different colors and textures. I get the most wear out of my dark grey one.

For those on a tighter budget, check out Ann Taylor , Banana Republic and J.Crew for solid suit options.

I love a sleek pantsuit, and swear by Theory’s blazer and pant sets .

The quality is fantastic and they typically make one style of fabric into a ton of different suit styles – oversized blazers, cropped blazers, buttoned blazers, open blazers, etc.

They do the same for the pants. So they have straight leg, boot cut, slim cropped pants and a variety of inseam lengths too.

I have different bottoms in the same suit fabric so I can mix and match and get more wear out of each item.

Blouses & Button Downs

business-trip-packing-list-work-blouse

Personally, I think blouses are much more flattering than button down shirts for women.

The worst is when a button accidentally pops open, or if there are gaps in between the buttons. Avoid all that with a feminine, clean blouse – I stick to neutral shades like white, beige, light blue, light pink, etc.

I also recommend bringing a thicker cardigan for the plane or air conditioned conference rooms. A thinner cardigan can fit under a blazer or a thicker, structured cardigan can replace a suit jacket.

Dresses are my favorite thing to wear for work since they fit the “conservative corporate office environment, but are much the most comfortable to wear on long days.

I also find it easier shopping for dresses, then finding trousers that will fit!

classic-work-shoes

I recommend packing comfortable flats for the plane and heels.

If you can fit it, I would bring a low heel that can last you all day (something around 2-3 inches) and a taller heel for that ‘power look’ when you have a client meeting.

My go to flats for work are by Ferragamo – classic, comfortable and a staple for conservative office environments. I like the Varina flat for everyday wear and the Vara pump for a modest, walkable heel.

Both styles come in every color under the rainbow so you can opt for a neutral black, navy or nude.. or get a seasonal color like blush pink velvet.

They’re slightly pricier than basic flats but each pair I’ve bought has lasted for years. For other comfortable heels, check out J. Crew , Ann Taylor , Banana Republic  and Sam Edelman .

I have a separate toiletry pouch to hold my travel makeup and for business trips, will usually include a light foundation, a lipstick and basic eye makeup.

I also make sure to bring spare contacts and glasses for potential late night meetings when your eyes may dry out.

For perfume, I fill a small travel atomizer with my favorite scent so that I have something travel friendly. Stick to clean, light scents that won’t potentially offend anyone.

My favorite crisp, fresh scents are Tiffany , Guess 1981 and Odin . I love YSL’s Parsienne and Chloe Love Story but I avoid these for business trips because they’re stronger and muskier!

A great tote bag that can hold a manila folder for papers is essential. Also pack a small notebook, extra pens and business cards. I usually also pack a small cross body or clutch bag for dinners.

Mansur Gavriel  makes gorgeous, affordable large shoulder totes. For higher end designers, I swear by the Prada saffiano tote and Fendi 2Jours bags for statement work bags.

I like to bring simple, high quality pearl earrings for business trips. If you don’t mind things on your wrists, a watch and bracelet are great jewelry options – I love David Yurman if you’re looking to splurge.

Missoma also sells very timeless jewelry. They’re more affordable and range in quality from demi fine to fine necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings.

I also try to clean up my nails before a multi-day business trip and swear by neutral tones. Deborah Lippmann has the best undressed nail polish set to cover a wide range of barely there shades.

Travel Bags, Organizers & Electronics

best-suitcase-for-business-trip

For work trips, especially as a junior member of the team, you absolutely want to go carry-on only .

The first time you fly with a boss can be a little nerve wracking as you’ll likely be spending significant extended time together and you don’t yet know their travel likes and dislikes.

Most senior people in the corporate world don’t want to wait for their bags and will  not  like having to wait to get to the hotel room for you to wait for your bag at the carousel.

If you can easily fit your items in a portable leather duffel bag , that’s a great thing to bring. Otherwise, bring a sleek and nondescript rolling carry-on.

I particularly recommend  Tumi or Samsonite for work carry-on luggage since they have very sleek and understated black options. Calpak luggage is especially light weight, has a glossy shine and comes with built-in GPS and charging ports.

Read this review post for all my favorite carry on luggage .

I like to group clothing by color or function and pack each group of items snugly in their own packing cube .

These are a lifesaver for keeping your suitcase organized in your hotel room and are my number 1 secret to maximize space and function in just a carry on suitcase. I typically reserve one packing cube for all my worn clothes to separate the dirty stuff from my fresh clothes!

Amazon has their own inexpensive 4 piece packing cube set and several travel blogger friends swear by this set from eBags .

Personally I use a set from CalPak which I love. They’re machine washable for easy cleaning and if you have CalPak luggage – they’re perfectly sized for their carry on luggage pieces!

  • Business Trip Packing List: What to Pack When You Travel for Work

What do I need to bring on my business trip ?

No matter how often you travel for work, you’re bound to forget something if you don’t plan ahead. Even if you travel a lot for work, getting ready for your business trip sometimes falls to the bottom of your to-do list.

This business trip packing list is designed to help you leave the stress at home and pack only what you need to have a more relaxed work trip.

Here’s how this list is broken down:

30+ Things to Pack on Your Next Business Trip:

How to pack for a business trip, work essentials.

  • Phone charger
  • Laptop or tablet charger
  • Portable charger
  • Headphones

When traveling for work, your laptop is your life. But just because it's filled to maximum storage capacity with your work doesn’t mean it has to be big and bulky. Upgrading to a lightweight laptop can make business packing easier by saving you space in your carry-on.

Your carry-on bag will be lighter without a heavy laptop weighing it down.

Top pick: Apple MacBook Air Runner up: Huawei Matebook 13

Save space on your tray table by investing in a tablet for your business trips. Tablets are a portable laptop alternative and you can even purchase an attachable keyboard for additional typing.

Tablets can slide in and out of any pocket with ease so you won’t have to dig through a packed carry-on searching for it. You’ll have most of the functions of a laptop with quicker storage and more room to spread out.

Top pick : Amazon Fire HD 8 Runner up : Apple Ipad

Device Chargers and Portable Chargers

Be sure to bring your device’s charger with you so you can plug in at the airport or on the plane.

If you’re stranded without electricity, portable chargers are the power move you need. Bring one or two charged up and ready to go in case you’re in a pinch without a place to plugin.

Top pick: Anker PowerCore 20100mAh Runner up: Anker PowerCore 10000

Office Supplies

There’s plenty of technology out there, but it doesn’t always work when we want it to. Be prepared for a wifi outage or malfunctioning electronics by bringing a spare pen and notebook with you on your flight. These tools are timeless and they can save you when your electronics are having an off day.

Office supplies are also helpful if you need to jot something down quickly during takeoff or landing when it's time to power down your larger electronics.

Noise Canceling Headphones

From crying babies to loud aircraft noises, flying can be noisy. You don’t want to be distracted from your work or miss out on sleep because you can’t focus.

Noise-canceling headphones block out the stress around you and give you the chance to sleep on your flight . Invest in a pair if you prefer to have peace and quiet when you travel for work.

Top tech pick ($$$) : Bose QuietComfort 35 Runner up ($$): Sony WH-CH700N Bluetooth Noise Canceling Budget pick ($): COWIN E7 Noise Cancelling Headphones

Travel Documents

business trip packing list

  • Passport wallet
  • Boarding pass
  • Hotel and car rental reservations

Passport and Photo ID

Don’t leave the house without at least one of these! You wouldn’t want to get to the front of the line at security and realize you left your passport or license on the desk at home.

Your passport is especially important and essential for international travel, so keep it in a safe place at all times. Invest in a passport wallet if you want to keep everything together in an easy to access carrying case.

Boarding Passes

Your boarding pass is your ticket to your next destination so be sure to keep track of it.

Luckily, most airline apps keep track of that boarding pass for you so you can have it ready to go on your mobile device. If you have an iPhone, you could also save your mobile boarding pass to your Apple Wallet for easy access before take-off.

Hotel and Rental Car Reservations

Confirmation numbers are key when it comes time to check-in for your hotel or to grab the keys to your rental car. Keeping track of those numbers and reservations isn’t always easy.

For quick access and to maintain organization on your trip, print out each confirmation you book and place them into a folder. It might seem old-school, but it’s effective.

If you’re more of a digital person, you can download TripIt . This app keeps all of your travel plans organized in one place by automatically combing your email for your trip information meaning you won’t have to lift a finger to find what you need.

Clothing & Footwear

3 day business trip packing list

Finding a balance between style and comfort is the main goal when packing your clothes for a business trip . You want to look your best discussing topics at the meeting and feel your best reclining in your chair inflight.

You also want to pack some more casual clothing for your time off! Even if you only have a few hours to yourself in your destination, you don't want to be stuck exploring in your best business casual.

Stow away some beach gear if you're headed to a warm, tropical destination ( Aruba , Bonaire or Curaçao anyone?), or some jeans and your favorite comfy shoes if you're off to a city.

Here’s a breakdown of typical business attire to help you tailor your wardrobe to your travel needs.

  • Outerwear jacket
  • Shirts and blouses
  • Business casual pants and skirts
  • Comfortable pants (yoga pants, joggers)
  • Dress shoes
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Portable steamer or iron

Jackets & Blazers

Jackets and blazers are business essentials so bring at least one. Choose a dark, solid color that won’t clash with the rest of our outfits.

Blazers and jackets are typically stiff but you can find some that are made with stretchable, more comfortable fabric. When you pack your jacket or blazer, be extra careful when folding it into your carry on to prevent wrinkles.

Shirts & Blouses

Keep it simple when you’re traveling by bringing only two choices of tops besides the one you wear on your flight. You don’t want to bog down your mind or your carry-on with too many choices.

Choose tops that make you look and feel most comfortable when you’re at work. Prioritize wrinkle-resistant shirts and blouses. First impressions are stressful enough without worrying if your top looks like it could use and ironing.

As with tops, limit the pants and skirts you bring with you in your carry-on. At most, bring a pair to change into in case there’s an accidental tear or stain. Investing in bottoms that are dark in color or made from stain-resistant material will save you the stress if you spill coffee on a bumpy flight.

You might not be able to wear sweatpants or yoga pants, but you can still wear bottoms that are made from stretchable material to make yourself more comfortable on your flight.

Recommendation: Lululemon’s On the Fly collection

You’ll be walking and standing a lot when you travel, so do your feet a favor and give them a little extra support. Trade in the heels and tight dress shoes for relaxed fits and extra arch support footwear. Many shoe brands like Clarks and Wolf & Sheppard specialize in stylish shoes that are comfortable too. It’s a small change to your wardrobe, but you’ll feel better when you finish your day without needing a foot massage.

Limit yourself to packing only  two pairs of shoes to maximize carry-on space.

You had a long day so unwind with a cozy change of clothes. It might be time for bed, but a smart way to pack pajamas is to make them multi-purpose.

Instead of a button down shirt made of silk, opt for lounge wear clothing that you could also wear in public in case something unexpected happens to your business attire or if you just want to go all in on comfort for your flight home.

Underwear & Socks

They call them unmentionables, but we definitely need to mention them when it comes to travel. Bring a change of underwear for your carry-on.

You never know what could happen so being able to freshen up when you feel uncomfortable is worth throwing in a few extra pairs of undies.

Plus, don’t forget your socks!

Portable Steamer

You might pull the shirt you planned to wear out of your suitcase to see it’s a wrinkled mess. Wrinkled clothing is a nightmare when you have a presentation to give or when you have to make a first impression.

While most hotel rooms have their own irons, setting up the ironing board and being sure the iron isn’t too hot is very time consuming. Plus, you don’t want to accidently put a burn in the only good shirt you brought with you!

With a portable steamer all you need is a little water and you can steam out those wrinkles in seconds.

Top pick: iSteam Steamer for Clothes Runner up: Steamfast SF-717 Mini Steam Iron

Keeping up with your typical hygiene routine is essential for traveling. Pack what you use on a regular basis to help you feel more at home while on the road. Here’s a list of some every-day hygiene products that you’ll want to pack with you in your toiletries bag.

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Facial cleanser
  • Conditioner
  • Moisturizer
  • Nail clippers
  • Zip-Lock plastic bags
  • Stain remover pen
  • Hair tools (flat or curling iron, dryer).

Most security checkpoints require that you limit your liquids to 3oz or less. When packing your toiletries, pack travel size liquids so you don’t get stopped at security and waste time opening your suitcase searching for the liquid you’ll have to throw in the trash.

Recommendation: Silicon Travel Toiletry bottles. They’re TSA approved and perfect for storing shampoo and conditioner.

Always bring a couple of large freezer plastic bags with you to pack liquids in. This will help you avoid your luggage becoming a massive mess!

Health & Wellness

  • Gym clothes
  • Drawstring bag
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • Flight Elixir
  • Travel first aid kit
  • Sleep mask
  • A portable white noise machine
  • Essential oils

Gym Clothes

Getting work done and working out after could be part of your daily routine at home. Don’t sacrifice your routine just because you’re not at your regular gym.

You might have some extra time on your trip to visit the hotel gym or to finish a quick in-room workout routine. If you think you’ll be able to sneak in a quick workout, you’ll want to have your athletic clothes and shoes with you.

These clothes can get sweaty so we recommend bringing a small drawstring bag to separate these clothes from your clean business attire in your carry-on.

Vitamins and Supplements

3 day business trip packing list

Your body goes through a lot of changes when you fly ,  so you’ll want to keep vitamins and other supplements on hand if you need a boost.

A package of FLIGHTFUD’s Flight Elixir is a superfood drink mix that helps you replenish your body while on the go. The elixir is easy to store in your carry-on and can help your body with hydration, circulation , bloating and digestion , cosmic radiation and the harmful  effects of jet lag .

Travel First Aid Kit

Unexpected illnesses are tough enough when you’re in the comfort of your own home. When you’re traveling, these aches and pains can be extra annoying because you don’t have your home remedies on hand.

You might not be able to bring the medicine cabinet with you, but you can make your own travel first aid kit by filling a small bag with items such as aspirin, Sudafed, cough drops, and vitamins.

Throw some extra Flight Elixir into your carry-on to boost your immunity throughout your trip so you don’t get sick in the first place!

business trip packing list

Travel Sleep Essentials

There’s nothing like jet lag to hinder your productivity and knock you off your game on a business trip.

Bring some travel sleep essentials to avoid suffering more than you need to. Bring a sleep mask, earplugs, and portable white noise machine if you don’t have the ability to use your phone.

Essential Oils

Essential oils can treat everything from headaches to stress, and they’re a great natural remedy to many travel ailments. Many of these oils can support your well-being while flying and mitigate jet lag’s effects.

Bring 1-2 bottles of your favorite essential oils for relaxation or rejuvenation. Try scents with lavender to promote relaxation, peppermint or citrus to energize, and wood scents like pine to help manage anxiety.

Top pick : Altitude Oil

Food & Drink

  • Healthy snacks
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Travel lunch box

Healthy Snacks

Healthy food isn't always available at the airport so don’t sacrifice your health for convenience and bring whole-food, easy to pack snacks with you.

Here are some quick and healthy snacks to throw in your carry-on:

  • Sliced fruits and vegetables
  • Energy bars (focus on the ones with real ingredients like Larabar )
  • Trail mix or assorted nuts like almonds, macadamia nuts, or cashews.
  • Nut butter to-go pouches.
  • Meat sticks and jerky.
  • Sliced fruit and vegetables.
  • Cheese and flaxseed crackers.

Flying can already have negative impacts on your health so try and combat those with the right food for a healthy diet.

Reusable Travel Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is an important part of travel, but constantly purchasing water at the airport can hurt your wallet and the planet.

Instead of worrying about when and where to get your daily dose of water, bring a reusable water bottle with you in your carry-on.

Top pick: Nomader Collapsible Water Bottle Runner up: Collapsible Silicone Water Bottles

Travel Lunchbox

If you meal prep and want to pack your regular lunches with you on the go, a portable lunchbox is a good investment in your health. Save your snacks from going bad by packing your fruits and veggies in a small travel lunchbox.

Most travel lunch boxes are light and can even roll up to take up less space in your already crowded bag. Look for some that are insulated and waterproof for extra protection on the go.

Top pick: Srise Lunch Bag Insulated Lunch Box Meal Prep Lunch Tote Boxes For Men and Women Runner up: UPPER ORDER Durable Insulated Lunch Box Tote Reusable Cooler Bag

  • Rewards cards
  • Folder for expense receipts

Rewards Card

Many airlines and hotels offer rewards for travelers who use their frequent flyer credit cards. Bring your card with you and swipe it to earn more miles, discounts, and other extra perks that could help you on your next trip.

You’ll want to have that rewards card with you inflight as well because some airlines offer discounts on inflight purchases as well.

Folder for Expense Receipts

As high tech as the world is nowadays, you’ll still run into a lot of paper receipts when you make a purchase on your business trip. You’ll need those records to keep track of your business spending so it’s important not to lose them.

Pack a small folder with you to slip your receipts into instead of crumpling them in your pocket where they could get lost.

Entertainment

  • Book or Kindle

Books and Magazines

You might want a break from those dense work files for something lighter and more entertaining. A small book or a magazine is easy to pack and doesn’t take up much space in your carry-on.

These are both great options if the inflight entertainment on your flight doesn’t work or if your other electronics lose power.

Relax, recline, and tune out the rest of the world by listening to your favorite playlist. Music is a great way to unwind after a busy morning spent getting to the airport, going through security, and boarding your flight.

A music hack for the frequent traveler is to download your Spotify playlist beforehand,  which lets you play your favorite songs even when your device is in airplane mode.

Getting your business trip packing list just right isn’t always easy. There are so many different elements that need to be balanced, such as casual clothing versus business attire, electronics, key documents, etc. Getting all your business essentials together for your next trip, especially international business travel, can be overwhelming. That’s why we’re going through some essential business travel tips to help you get your work trip packing list just right.

The Ultimate Packing List for a Work Trip in 2022

Our business trip packing list brings together all the travel essentials in one place to help you stay organized, no matter what your destination is. We’ll run through some of the basic items you’ll need to keep and some extra personal items that can make the trip easier.

Depending on your destination, you might need a fair amount of paperwork. Some of the important ones are listed below, but always double-check with requirements the destination may have as it varies from place to place:

Driver’s License

Business visa (if necessary) and/or proof of entry, work permit, etc., supporting documents from work for the purpose of travel, contracts and memos needed for meeting, travel insurance, boarding pass.

Electronics and Accessories

Traveling often means long wait times, flight delays, and more free time than you might have expected initially. Traveling with electronic devices enables you to travel easily, be productive, and balance your time as needed.

Business Trip Packing List

Your laptop is the most crucial part of your business trip, that much is certain. But while you might remember to pack it, make sure you keep peripherals and accessories with you too. That includes chargers that work with electronic sockets in your destination, Bluetooth accessories, and anything else you may need.

Laptop sleeve

Laptop sleeves are especially beneficial for a heavy laptop, but they can also work for lighter ones. Your travel bags often get jostled around and bumped, which is where laptop sleeves come in. They can protect your devices, and you can also keep peripherals or accessories depending on the type of sleeve and bag you’re using.

Noise Canceling Headphones

Depending on how you’re getting to the destination, good, high-quality headphones can really help. You can get some sleep on noisy flights and trains if needed with them. Plus, you can use them to take meetings on the go or listen to music and podcasts during long flights.

Having wi-fi access is crucial, so look into ways to get internet access before you leave for your trip. Most major phone carriers offer roaming deals, but those can often be expensive. Don’t just rely on hotel rooms for the internet. You can get internet cards or a wireless card to use on the trip to ensure you have access to data and the internet.

Wallet and Money

Keeping your wallet is, of course, crucial. But you also should check whether there is a specific business card you need to be using on the trip. Keep some cash on you that you can use in emergencies if required and emergency credit cards.

Business Trip Packing List

Women’s Outfit Packing List for Work Trip

For women, it’s important to pack things that balance work dress code and comfort while traveling:

  • Dress clothes for any business meeting planned, with at least one pair of matching dress shoes to go with the different outfits
  • Workout clothes and athletic shoes in case you want to use the hotel gym
  • Bathing suit if there’s a hotel pool
  • Yoga pants and casual clothing for the travel period

Men’s Business Attire Travel Packing List

Men need to strike the same balance between work clothes and casual attire as women and pack items that work for business meetings, such as:

  • Collared shirts
  • Suit jacket
  • Casual polo shirts
  • Dress shoes
  • Atheltic shoes and activewear for hotel gyms

Getting your toiletries to fit with TSA-approved guidelines is always a challenge. Save space by using smaller pouches to store your personal care items and check for travel-sized toiletries where possible so you can pack for a business trip faster and don’t forget essential items.

  • Travel-sized plastic bottles that you can wash and reuse as needed for trips
  • Floss/interdental brushes
  • Shampoo and conditioner in travel-sized plastic bottles
  • Skincare items
  • An eye mask is an often forgotten item, but it can help you get some shut-eye as an eye mask is effective at blocking light.

Other Essential Items for Your Business Travel Packing List

You can pack faster if you know what additional items you’ll need for your business trip. These items don’t take up much space and can be taken on a carry-on or in checked baggage.

  • Breath Mints to take at regular intervals in between business meetings
  • Office supplies such as post-its, pens, highlighters,
  • A packing cube for shorter trips. You can also get multiple packing cubes if you’d like to take more items but are having trouble fitting them in
  • Business cards
  • Healthy snacks
  • Reusable water bottle with a built-in filter. Remember that the TSA has a liquid limit for toiletries, and that also extends to liquids that you may be traveling with, such as water, soda, and juice. Don’t fill the reusable water bottle before you leave. Instead, fill it up after you’ve gotten through security to save time.

Business Trip Packing List

Packing for Business Trips – Hand Luggage Only Flight

If you’re trying to save some time during your travel, take only a personal item and/or a carry-on bag with you. Carry on luggage doesn’t need to be checked in, so you can get your boarding pass faster and make it through security without much hassle. Plus, you’ll be able to quickly get out of the airport if you’re not waiting for baggage on the carousel.

For up to a three-day business trip, hand luggage gives you just the right space since you take only what will fit in the bag. However, don’t forget to check airline requirements for carry-on bag dimensions to ensure you can take it on the flight with you.

Packing for an Overnight Work Trip

For overnight work trips, you might be able to get away with a small carry-on bag or even a travel backpack.

This might be harder to do if your work attire consists of dress shirts and suits, but with some travel pack hacks and neat folding, you may be able to fit all your items in a small bag for a short business trip.

Use a packing cube to try to optimize space, and try not to overload your bag.

Packing for a Long Work Trip

If you’re planning a longer trip. If your hotel room has the space, you can hang up clothes easily and even take items for personal time to support your well-being.

Try to think about items you absolutely need and take into consideration baggage allowances that the airline might have. If it’s an extended trip, it might be better to pack more, so you don’t have to buy too much stuff throughout the trip.

Business Trip Packing List

Emergency Preparedness

In addition to packing essentials, it’s crucial to be prepared for unexpected situations during your business trip. Here are some key emergency preparedness tips:

  • Create a digital travel folder: Scan important documents, including passport, ID, and travel insurance, and store them securely in a password-protected digital folder or cloud storage.
  • Emergency contacts: Have a list of emergency contacts, including family, friends, and colleagues, readily accessible in case you need to reach out for assistance.
  • Local emergency services: Know the local emergency numbers for the country you’re visiting, such as the police, medical services, and your country’s embassy or consulate.
  • Medical kit: Pack a small medical kit with basic supplies like band-aids, pain relievers, antiseptics, and any prescription medications you may need.
  • Travel adapter and power bank: Ensure you have a universal travel adapter to charge your devices, and carry a power bank to keep your phone charged in case of power outages or emergencies.
  • GPS tracking app: Consider using a GPS tracking app on your phone so that loved ones can monitor your whereabouts, especially if you’re traveling to remote areas.
  • Emergency cash: Keep a small amount of local currency in a secure location, separate from your wallet, in case you encounter issues with credit cards or ATMs.
  • Travel insurance details: Have a printed copy of your travel insurance policy, including contact information for the insurance provider, in case you need to make a claim or seek assistance.
  • Safety apps: Download and familiarize yourself with safety apps that can provide information on local emergency services, crisis alerts, and travel advisories.
  • Stay informed: Stay updated on local news and developments, especially if you’re traveling during turbulent times, by following reliable news sources or government travel advisories.

Preparing for a business trip and creating the perfect packing list can be a complex task, requiring a delicate balance between business attire, essential documents, and personal items. Whether you’re embarking on an international business journey or a domestic work-related excursion, careful planning is key.

Our comprehensive business trip packing list aims to simplify this process, offering guidance on what to include in your travel essentials. From essential paperwork like passports and driver’s licenses to crucial electronics and accessories such as laptops and noise-canceling headphones, we’ve covered it all.

Additionally, we’ve provided specific packing recommendations for both men and women, taking into account the need for a balance between work attire and comfort during travel. Toiletries, an often overlooked aspect of packing, should also adhere to TSA-approved guidelines to ensure a smooth journey.

Furthermore, we’ve highlighted some additional essential items that can enhance your business travel experience, including office supplies, healthy snacks, and reusable water bottles with built-in filters.

Depending on the duration of your trip, whether it’s a short overnight stay or an extended stay, you can adapt your packing strategy accordingly. Hand luggage or carry-on bags can expedite airport procedures, while longer trips may require more thoughtful consideration of baggage allowances.

Ultimately, careful planning and attention to detail when packing for your business trip will not only keep you organized but also help ensure a successful and stress-free journey in 2022 and beyond.

Now that you're armed with these tips, let's jump into the nitty-gritty of what to pack for a 3-day trip!

Choosing the Right Luggage

A man with a checklist and his luggage bag.

Before you can begin packing, you need to make sure you choose the right type of luggage for the trip. If you’re only going for a few days, a small carry-on bag should suffice. But if you’re traveling for a week or longer, you’ll need to pack more items and will likely need a larger suitcase.

When selecting luggage, keep the following in mind:

  • The size and weight restrictions of the airline you’re flying
  • Whether you need a bag with wheels
  • If you want a hard-sided or soft-sided bag
  • How many people are traveling with you (you may be able to share a larger suitcase if you’re traveling with someone else)

1. Weekend Trip

A group of young people going on a trip.

For a weekend business trip, the first thing you need to do is ask yourself what the dress code will be. Is it a casual environment or business casual? If you’re not sure, err on the side of caution and pack clothing that is appropriate for a meeting or presentation.

Assuming that you’ll need to pack for two days, we recommend bringing the following items:

  • Charger for each device
  • Headphones (optional)

Travel Documents

  • Visa (if necessary)
  • Boarding pass
  • Cash (in the local currency)
  • Credit cards
  • 2 collared shirts or blouses
  • 1 pair of trousers or a skirt
  • 1 pair of comfortable shoes
  • 1 sweater or jacket
  • Socks and underwear

Personal Items

  • Medications
  • Contact lenses and solution (if applicable)
  • Glasses (if applicable)
  • Makeup (optional)
  • Jewelry (optional)

Office Supplies

You’ll also want to bring some work supplies with you so that you can be prepared for any meetings.

  • Pens/pencils

Other Items

  • Laundry bag (if you plan on doing any laundry while on your trip)
  • An empty suitcase or duffel bag (for souvenirs!)
  • An umbrella or raincoat (depending on the forecast)

This list is just meant to get you started. Be sure to add any other items that you think you’ll need, based on your own needs and preferences.

Weekend Trip With Children

A happy family inside a car on a business trip.

If you are bringing your children with you for this business trip, you’ll obviously need to pack for them as well. Here are a few additional items to pack, in addition to the items on the above list:

Babies/Toddlers

  • Children’s clothing
  • Diapers and wipes (if necessary)
  • Formula or baby food (if necessary)
  • Children’s toys and books
  • Child car seat (if renting a car)

Children Ages 5 and up

  • Schoolwork (if applicable)
  • Electronics and chargers (if applicable)
  • Game console (if applicable)

If you’re bringing your pet with you on the trip, be sure to pack:

  • Their food and water bowls
  • Enough food and water for the entire trip
  • A leash or harness
  • Any medications they are taking
  • Their favorite toys

This is just a basic list of items that you’ll need to pack for your business trip. Be sure to add any other items that you or your family members may need

2. Week Long Business Trip

A woman sitting beside a bottle of wine.

For a longer business trip, you’ll need to pack enough clothing and personal items for the entire duration of your stay. Most people prefer to travel with a carry-on bag and a checked bag, but it’s ultimately up to you. If you’re traveling with a lot of technology, you may want to consider bringing a backpack as your carry-on, so that you have more room for everything.

Here’s a list of items to pack for a week-long business trip:

To pack for a week-long business trip, you’ll need to bring enough clothing to last you the entire week, plus a few extra items just in case.

Let’s start with the basics:

  • Underwear and socks for each day
  • Pants or skirts for each day
  • Tops for each day
  • A jacket or blazer
  • A pair of comfortable shoes

Toiletries and other essentials:

You cannot assume that your hotel will provide you with toiletries. While most do, not all do, and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

  • Toiletries bag
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Soap or body wash
  • Makeup and makeup remover
  • Hair brush or comb
  • Contact lenses and solution, if you wear them
  • Extra glasses, if you need them
  • Feminine hygiene products

These days, it’s hard to imagine traveling without some form of technology.

  • Chargers for all of your devices
  • External hard drive

A man wearing suit standing next to his luggage.

There are a few other items you might want to consider packing as well.

  • Passport and travel documents
  • First aid kit
  • Water bottle
  • Books or magazines
  • Empty bag for souvenirs
  • Any medications you take regularly
  • An umbrella
  • A travel pillow
  • A scarf or shawl (for chilly offices)
  • A blanket (for long flights)
  • Noise-cancelling headphones (for long flights)
  • A book or movie (for long flights)
  • Snacks (for long flights)
  • An adapter, if you’re traveling to a country with a different type of electrical outlet
  • Portable charger or battery pack

If your child is coming with you on your week-long business trip, you’ll need additional items for them.

Babies and toddlers:

  • a diaper bag packed with diapers, wipes, extra clothes, and any other necessary items
  • formula or breast milk, if you are not able to nurse
  • baby food and snacks
  • a comfort item such as a blanket or toy

Children aged 5 and up:

  • a small backpack packed with snacks, a water bottle, any necessary medications, and a change of clothes
  • entertainment such as books, coloring books, or handheld electronic games
  • a comfort item such as a blanket or stuffed animal

If you’re bringing your furry friend along on your business trip, you’ll need to pack a few extra things for them as well.

  • food and water bowls
  • enough food and water for the entire trip
  • a collar or harness with ID tags
  • toys and treats
  • a bed or blanket
  • any necessary medications

You’ll also need to be sure that your hotel allows pets before you book your stay.

3. Month-Long (or longer) Business Trip

Business persons on the airport with their luggage.

If you’re going on a business trip that will last a month or longer, you’ll need to pack accordingly. This means bringing enough clothes to last the entire trip, as well as any toiletries and other items you may need. Here is a packing list for a month-long business trip:

  • 10-14 shirts/blouses
  • 7-10 pants/skirts
  • 2-3 dresses
  • 10-14 socks/hosiery
  • 1-2 outerwear (jacket, coat)

You’ll want to make sure you work out where you can do laundry – whether at a laundromat or with your hotel. To figure out how much laundry you’ll need to do, consider wearing clothes more than once and packing items that can be easily washed (like jeans or skirts).

Again, you’ll want to make sure that you have enough of everything to last the entire trip. This includes:

  • toothbrush/toothpaste
  • shampoo/conditioner

Don’t forget any medications you may need, as well. If you have allergies, be sure to pack your EpiPen!

A person holding her passport and a map.

Of course, you’ll need to make sure you have all of your travel documents in order before you go. This includes:

  • visa (if required)
  • hotel reservations
  • rental car information

Be sure to pack these items in a safe and easily accessible place. A travel wallet is a great option to keep everything organized.

If you’re traveling for business, chances are you’ll need to bring some technology with you. This may include:

  • laptop/tablet
  • memory cards/sticks
  • external hard drive (if needed)

Pack these items carefully to avoid damage. You may also want to consider investing in travel insurance for your electronics.

If you’re presenting at a conference or meeting, you’ll also need any materials related to that (e.g., slides, handouts).

If you’re traveling for business, you’ll likely need to bring some office supplies with you. This may include:

  • pens/pencils

Depending on your trip, you may need to pack other items. For example:

  • a travel pillow and blanket if you’re flying
  • books or magazines for entertainment
  • snacks and drinks for the plane or car
  • an umbrella or raincoat
  • a swimsuit if you’re staying in a hotel with a pool
  • formal clothing if you’re attending a business dinner or event

If you’re traveling with family, you may need to pack items for them as well (e.g., diapers, formula, toys).

Babies and toddlers

A woman on her car with her baby.

If you are traveling with a child aged 5 or younger, you’ll need to bring the following items:

  • child car seat
  • formula/food
  • toys/entertainment
  • portable game console
  • blanket/sleeping bag

You’ll also want to make sure you have a diaper bag packed and ready to go at all times. This should include diapers, wipes, a change of clothes for the child, and snacks.

Children Aged 5 and Up

If you’re traveling with a child aged 5 and up, you’ll need to bring the following items:

You’ll also want to make sure you have a bag packed with snacks and drinks, as well as any medications the child may need.

If you’re travelling with a pet, you’ll need to bring the following items:

  • crate/carrier
  • harness/leash

You’ll also want to make sure you have a travel plan for your pet, including where they will stay while you’re away and how you will get them there.

The most important thing to remember when packing for a business trip is to pack what you need. This means bringing enough clothes and toiletries to last the entire trip, as well as any technology or other items you may need. By doing this, you can avoid having to buy anything while you’re away, which can save you time and money.

This is just a basic packing list for a month-long business trip. You may need to add or remove items depending on the specifics of your trip (e.g., if you’re flying or driving, if you’re staying in a hotel or an apartment, etc.).

Making the Most Out of Your Luggage Space

Different accessories wrap inside a luggage bag.

When packing for a business trip, it’s important to make the most of your luggage space. This means packing efficiently and using all available space. Here are some tips for doing this:

  • Use packing cubes or bags to organize your clothes. This will help you fit more into your suitcase and keep things from getting wrinkled.
  • Roll your clothes instead of folding them. This will also help you fit more into your suitcase and prevent wrinkles.
  • Put heavier items at the bottom of your suitcase and lighter items on top.
  • Utilize all pockets and compartments in your suitcase, including the pockets in the lid.
  • If you’re traveling with a laptop, use it to store items like chargers and cords.
  • If you’re traveling with a carry-on bag, pack it as full as possible to avoid having to check it at the airport.

Packing for a business trip doesn’t have to be difficult. By following these tips, you can make sure you have everything you need without overpacking.

Making a Hotel Room Home

When traveling for a long period of time, it’s important to make your hotel room feel like home. This can help you avoid homesickness and make the trip more enjoyable. To do this, you can:

  • Bring pictures of family and friends
  • Bring a favorite pillow or blanket
  • Buy or bring small items to decorate the room
  • Pack a small care package with your favorite snacks and drinks

By making your hotel room feel like home, you can help make the trip more enjoyable and less stressful.

If you have a young child or a pet travelling with you, you’ll also need to consider their needs when packing for the trip. This may include bringing extra food, a travel bed or crate, and toys. By thinking about the needs of everyone in your party, you can make sure everyone has a comfortable and enjoyable trip.

Choosing a Place to Stay

A man stretching his arms inside the room.

Sometimes your employer will complete all of your travel arrangements for you. But depending on the purpose of the trip, you may have some say in where you stay. If this is the case, here are some things to consider when choosing a place to stay:

  • Distance from the conference center or meeting location
  • Proximity to restaurants and other amenities
  • Room amenities (e.g., Wi-Fi, cable TV, mini-fridge)
  • Hotel amenities (e.g., pool, gym, business center)

You’ll also want to make sure you’re comfortable with the location of your hotel. If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in the city, you may want to choose a hotel that’s centrally located. But if you’re going to be spending most of your time at the conference center or meeting location, you may want to choose a hotel that’s closer to that.

Additional Helpful Tips

In addition to the packing lists, here are a few other helpful tips to make your business trip go smoothly:

  • Make sure you have all the necessary travel documents well in advance of your trip. This includes your passport, visa (if necessary), and travel insurance documents.
  • Keep copies of important documents, such as your passport and travel insurance information, in a safe place in case you lose the originals.
  • Pack light! This will make it easier to move around and avoid excess baggage fees.
  • Invest in a good quality suitcase or duffel bag. This will make packing and unpacking a breeze.
  • Make sure your laptop and other electronics are fully charged before you leave. It’s also a good idea to bring along extra batteries or a portable charger, just in case.
  • If you’re traveling by air, wear comfortable clothing and shoes. This will make going through security a lot easier.
  • If you’re renting a car, be sure to bring along your driver’s license, proof of insurance, and credit card.
  • Be sure to pack any medications you may need in their original containers. It’s also a good idea to bring along a copy of your prescriptions, just in case.
  • If you’re traveling to a foreign country, be sure to research the local customs and laws. This will help you avoid any potential problems.
  • Finally, don’t forget to have fun! Business trips can be a great opportunity to explore new places and meet new people.

The Bottom Line

Overall, there’s a lot to consider when packing for a business trip. You need to think about the purpose of the trip, how long you’ll be gone, and what you’ll need to be comfortable. By following the packing lists and tips above, you can make sure you have everything you need for a successful trip.

5 Tips for Your Weekend Trip Packing List

Here are a few things to have in mind in order to keep packing as simple as possible.

1. Start Early

Make a list and start laying clothes out that you’re interested in bringing the week before your trip begins. This will give you a chance to weigh options and make decisions on what you really need vs. doing it in a panic and taking your entire closet with you.

I prefer to set up my list by day. For instance, in an iPhone Note I will list out Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday. Underneath each day I’ll type out everything I’ll need to wear that day. TIPS:

  • Include EVERYTHING down to pairs of underwear and socks. I put my pairs of shoes as well.
  • It does not mean you need to wear it that specific day, but this will help you not overpack and help you feel confident that you will have enough clothes.

This brings us to our next tip…

2. Pack in Outfits

Do not, I repeat do not,  pack clothes by individual item. You want to bring your best-fitting jeans? Great, what are you going to wear with them? Your favorite leggings? Grab them and figure out what top(s) are your best option.

Envision your days away and imagine which types of clothes you will need. From there, make individual piles for each outfit/day.

And don’t forget to check the weather forecast. Warm weather or cold will obviously be a huge indicator for what you need to bring.

In the photo below, you’ll see three “columns” with each day’s outfit. And remember, there is actually no law stating that you can’t wear something more than once—especially things like cardigans and jeans. This brings us to…

what to pack for 3 day trip

3. Mix and Match is Key

Can you bring interchangeable outfits? Triple points for you. Pack a cute, comfortable, black dress with a cardigan that will be perfect for exploring the city. The next night, replace the cardigan with a scarf and you’re ready for the bar. That’s three pieces of clothing for two outfits instead of a day-time outfit plus three night-time outfits because you might want to wear the green dress, maybe the pink one and this yellow one is cute too .

If you are only gone for a weekend, your bag can be small—cheaper and easier to manage. That said, you need to be smart with your space…

4. Roll Into More Space

Tightly rolled clothes will go much farther in your backpack, carry-on suitcase, or duffel bag than folding and they will actually be less wrinkly. Roll everything, place the largest items on the bottom like jeans and jackets and work your way up from there. When you don’t have much space, this goes a long way!

5. Your Travel Outfit

Think layers. Wear your jacket, your biggest top, and bulkiest shoes in order to avoid all of this going into your small bag. You might get a little toasty but you can de-layer once you are at the airport gate. PRO TIP: I’ve never been told I couldn’t have a jacket (or two) in my arms when boarding.

What to Pack for 3 Day Trip: Bonus Tips

Here are a few extra things to keep in mind when you are packing for a weekend trip.

  • Packing Cubes : These is the BEST WAY to utilize more space in a small bag.
  • Use. Your. Pockets.:  Jacket pockets, jeans pockets, personal item pockets, use them all! These are the perfect place for smaller items (makeup, lip balm, phone chargers, sunglasses, etc.) when you can’t fit one more thing in your carry-on bag.
  • Dryer Sheets: Throw a few between layers of clothes to keep everything smelling fresh!
  • Backpack = Purse:  Invest in a cute backpack and not only do you have luggage but a purse to walk around the city with—hands-free, mind you.
  • Plastic Bag or large Ziploc Bag : Bring one with you to store dirty underwear, socks, wet swimsuits, etc.
  • Cold Weather Travel Tip : If you are going somewhere cold, think more in extra layers vs. bulky items. A base layer, light fleece, and water-repellent outer layer will pack better than one oversize sweater – and you will have more items as options throughout your trip.

What to Pack for 3 Day Trip—Checklist!

Let’s get an actual what to pack for 3 day trip checklist going. Use this as a guide when you are creating your packing list in your phone or on a sheet of paper. Remember, START WITH THE ESSENTIALS. From there, you can add in a couple of extra items or outfits you “might” want to wear—IF there is space.

One pair of bottoms for number of days. For three, you will have a pair of jeans (or jean shorts), one pair of leggings, and a pair to wear while traveling. Remember, if you have room at the end, you can easily get another pair of pants in.

One top for number of days that you matched with a pair or bottoms. Wear the bulkiest top when you travel and put the rest in your bag. Neutral, everyday tops are the way to go for convenience and being happy with what you decided to bring.

Bonus: Dresses. No pants = more space!

Cardigan/Sweater

One total. It’s best if you wear it but you should have room to pack. The best option is a black or neutral color sweater that works well with all of your top options and can be worn more than once, if needed.

Jacket (Optional)

If a jacket is necessary, make sure you wear it on travel day (even a rain jacket!) so you don’t take up a ton of space in your bag!

Bathing Suit + Cover Up (Optional)

One of each for the weekend. If you happen to have space and want to bring an extra, go for it. These items can be rolled up and made small.

One pair. A sleep shirt and a pair of light sweats or shorts. If you have space, throw in an extra. Remember, a top that you bring might work just fine, too.

Socks/Underwear/Bras

One set of each for number of days. Keep in mind that this will give you one extra just in case since you are wearing a set on travel day.

T he biggest pair on your feet + 1 extra. Comfort is key. You do not want to be walking around in uncomfortable shoes. Pro Tips when it comes to your shoes:

  • Store your socks in your shoes for extra space —and to keep your shoes in form.
  • If your backpack has a spot for a water bottle, think of it as a spot for flip flops.
  • Tie your shoes to the top of your backpack. Remember, this is efficiency—not fashion 🙂

Extras + Bathroom Essentials

Fit what you can. Don’t forget: Hotels are going to have towels, shampoos, lotions, hair dryers, etc. so don’t waste space with these items. The rest is for a book, phone charger, jewelry, small makeup bag, workout shirt, wallet, etc.

Overall Rule of Thumb: If you question it, leave it at home.

what to pack for 3 day trip

Lastly, Why You Will LOVE to Pack Light

Even if you think you won’t or proclaim yourself to be an “over packer,” you will be hooked to packing light after the first time. And here are the added bonuses:

You have fewer options. You eliminate the  hmmm, what am I going to wear today? Or the ew I hate this, I’m changing.  It’s simple and efficient with no time lost. Instead of bringing 10 outfits you like, focus on 4 that you love. And before you hit me with I just like options , stop.

You’re not going to worry about more options if you don’t have them. Quit wasting precious vacation time wishing you had the off-the-shoulder striped shirt when you have the cute, v-neck blue one. You look great! And should spend less time in your hotel room and more having a good time on your trip.

Saves Energy

Post-vacation laundry. I know you’ve been in the situation where you open your suitcase to unpack, realize you have no idea what’s clean and what’s dirty so you do a monster load of laundry that’s likely half full of clean clothes. Double the loading, double the switching, double the folding, and double the dreaded putting away. No thanks. Pack only what you know you will wear and come home with one, small size load of laundry.

Saves Money

We know how a lot of the airines charge for bags now! What a joke. But you should not have to incur an additional cost just for your clothes! Keep things in a small personal item bag for an even more afforadble trip!

Reduces Stress

Traveling is a breeze when you are doing it lightly.  Everything you have is on your back! It’s easier to get around, store and there are fewer moments of  oh my gosh, where’s my [insert super important thing here]?!”

Ultimate female packing list for a minimalist business trip.

The following packing list for a minimalist business trip was submitted by Rachel. See all packing lists .

When I first started traveling for work , I may have appeared a little high maintenance… I packed my life into a roller bag, a giant computer bag, and my purse. I imagined myself as Legally Blonde ’s Elle Woods when I showed up to the TSA line , teetering on too-tall heels, my matching pink luggage in tow.

After being on the road for much of the last three years, my attitude, gear, and how I travel has changed dramatically : now I’m less Legally Blonde , and more Catch Me if You Can . For work I travel about 30 percent of the time to different client sites, enough so my inner adventurer gets excited about the boutique hotel and off-the-beaten-path restaurant, but not too much where I forget where I traveled last week.

My Lightbulb Moment

About two years ago, I took a trip with a colleague to Los Angeles over four days. On the way back to the airport, I noticed she didn’t have a roller bag or duffle. She only carried a Northface backpack and large purse. I asked where her bag was, concerned she forgot it. She responded with, “I only ever bring a backpack and a purse . If I can’t pack it in here I don’t need it.”

I was incredulous! I had never heard of anyone doing that. It. Blew. My. Mind. I thought maybe there’s something to it and challenged myself to give it a try .

minimalist business trip packing list

On the next several trips I made a conscious effort to bring less stuff . No I don’t need five pairs of shoes. No I don’t need my bathing suit and towel for the hotel pool. No I don’t need a suit and a change of clothes for each day and an extra outfit—just in case. You get the picture.

I gained momentum and thought about what else I could cut, analyzing what I didn’t use and leaving anything unused behind on the next trip. I discovered packing cubes , blogs about traveling light , and new ideas sparked. I soon fit everything in my Northface and carried a purse with room to spare. Then I hit a wall…

I loved the freedom from carrying so little . BUT I didn’t feel or look particularly professional carrying a bright yellow backpack. I started looking around at airports at the different consultants on the road and saw men and women in backpacks that looked professional and comfortable . I made mental notes of brands, shapes, sizes, colors, material, etc. I quoted backpack facts to my husband whose eyes started to glaze over any time I pulled up the REI website or eBags or whichever was my favorite of the moment. Then I found the one.

What I Pack Now

Now I pack everything in my purse and Timbuk2 Jet Laptop Pack (review coming soon). It is 30 liters of organization and compartmentalization so I know where everything is and can reach it at a moment’s notice.

A couple of the things I really like from a work travel perspective are its clean look and it fits under the seat in front of you on most airplanes. You can carry it both as a backpack and as a briefcase, and it has a separate laptop compartment. I can carry everything I need and have room for more if I pick up something new in my travels.

On the plane, I will typically dress in jeans, cardigan, and my flats (which match both my suit and casual attire). I plan my tops so when my meeting ends I can swap the skirt for jeans and be ready for a casual night around town or for a glass of wine with a colleague.

I’ll use jewelry to dress my outfits up or down, as it’s a great way to change the feel of an outfit in an instant without taking up much space in my bag.

Minimal toiletries for a minimalist business trip packing list

  • Toiletries : razor, face lotion, comb, floss, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, q-tips, nail kit, Kleenex, spare contacts + contact solution , face wash, menstrual cup , and depending on the hotel, shampoo and conditioner. Often times, if I know the hotel will have decent toiletries, I’ll change out what I bring and just use what they provide.
  • Minimalist makeup kit
  • Mini medical kit – Band aids, aspirin, Imodium, etc.
  • Electronics: Laptop, phone, chargers
  • Travel coffee mug
  • Water bottle
  • Pen set: I like color options
  • Scarf: for warmth and fashion
  • Book or Nook depending on the length of the trip

  • 1 pair jeans
  • 1 workout outfit
  • 1 sleep outfit
  • 1 pair of tennis shoes
  • 1 pair of flats

  • 1 pair underwear for each night
  • 1 pair pantyhose for each meeting

minimalist business trip packing list packed up

Overall, my way of seeing the world has changed because of what I pack. I glide through airports in a way I didn’t before. If I’m running late I’m confident that I can physically run to the gate.

I am more hands free, and when I want access to something, I know exactly where it is. And, because I’m packing in the same way each trip with similar items, I pack faster with more consistency.

Even with what I bring, I could still cut back if I needed. With each trip I continue to experiment with the combination of items I bring, and I look forward to perfecting the system and learning how others do the same.

This is so great – I went to Italy for almost three weeks with just a carryon and it was SO FREEING. But I still had too much stuff. I’ve come a long way from my younger years when I’d carry full-size toiletries items and a massive suitcase full of “options.” Now I know better and I know I’ve got favorite pieces and I should just take those. It’s way easier to just have a few things to choose from and it’s so easy to move from place to place when my bag is light and small.

Hi, thanks a lot for this insight 😀 Honestly, it’s always like: oh I need, this and this and that and in the end you only end up using a few things, that would even have fitted into a tiny bag. One question I have to you: how do you keep your tops without wrinkles?

' src=

April 21, 2019 at 1:23 am

I lay my tops or blouses on my bed and fold each one carefully, smoothing as I go. It’s really a matter of practice. But here’s the good part! Once folded, slide the blouse or top into a one gallon zip lock bag, One top to a bag. Without moving the bag around too much, or lifting it, I suck the air out of the bag and seal it. With practice, this makes an airtight parcel that keeps the shirts smooth. I’ve even been able to slide the bag across the room without disturbing the contents, as long as the seal is unbroken! I hope this works for you!

' src=

January 7, 2020 at 7:26 pm

I’m a big believer in rolling your tops. I also tend to pick fabrics which don’t wrinkle much anyway. Lastly when I’m in my room, the first thing I do is unpack everything, hang it, and if it looks wrinkled at all, use either the hotel iron or a fun trick I learned. In the morning when you are showering, hang whatever is wrinkled in the room with you and make sure the door is closed. The heat from the shower steams up the room as well as your clothes -essentially steaming out all the wrinkles! Hope that helps!

What to Pack for a Business Trip: A Women’s Guide to Traveling in Style

So you’ve got an upcoming work trip and the time has come to start planning for your travels.

For some, hitting the road is a career must. Conferences are your love language and you always find new favorite spots every palace you go to.

For others, it’s a hassle. After all, on top of prepping projects or presentations, you now have the additional baggage of travel.

If you’re staring at your closet, unsure of what to pack for a business trip, welcome. You’ve come to the right place.

Press pause on stuffing every possible outfit you might need into your suitcase. Instead, sit down with our one-and-done women’s guide for stress-free work travel. From how to pack your bag to what should make the cut in the first place, we’ve thought of everything.

How to Pack for a Business Trip: Tips for Business Women

Before we get into what to pack for a business trip, let’s tackle how to pack for a business trip.

At Next Level Wardrobe , we encourage our clients to approach clothing with intentionality, and to value quality over quantity. Use these as your two guide posts as you prepare for your trip.

What does this mean in practice?

It means that every item you take with you should be there for a specific purpose. Have a realistic idea of what your trip requires instead of over-stuffing your bags with “just-in-case” items. Remember, you’re going on a business trip, not on a spontaneous adventure.

Approach your travels with a clear, concise plan and you’ll actually be more prepared and you’ll feel more put-together.

Our top tip for women wondering how to pack for a business trip is to start with the perfect luggage.

Choosing the Best Luggage for Your Business Trip

View this post on Instagram A post shared by TUMI (@tumitravel)

Although every trip and traveler is different, the need for a high-quality piece of luggage stays the same. First, you want a bag that’s sturdy to avoid any mid-travel misshapes or shopping for a replacement too soon.

Next, you want a bag that’s the right size for your travel needs.

In our experience, selecting a carry-on suitcase and either a backpack or a duffle bag is enough for most trips. (We’ll break this down with our packing list and how to pack your bag later on.)

An added bonus of this luggage duo? If you’re traveling by plane, you’ve got everything you need at your fingertips. No worrying about lost bags or racing against the clock at baggage claim.

When picking out what to pack for a business trip, we recommend checking out Tumi . They’ve got all things bags, backpacks, and suitcases. They’ve got a wide range of sizes, makes, and models from compact carry-ons to spacious weekenders for all occasions. You can also count on their complementary baggage trace system in case of loss or theft.

Last but not least, their warranty has you covered. The first year includes just about any type of damage to the suitcase (even from TSA or airline workers). Years 2 through 5 cover you for manufacturer defects or normal wear and tear.

Now that you’ve got your bags, let’s get to packing them.

How to Pack Clothes for a Business Trip

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NY + LA Personal Stylist (@nextlevelwardrobe)

With your perfect luggage in hand, let’s make the most of the space inside it. Recently, our NLW founder Cassandra Sethi went on a 6-week trip with just a carry-on and personal item. She was able to create 50 outfits with only 24 clothing items (including shoes).

Stuck on how to pack for a business trip in terms of clothes? Here are our tips for women on getting everything inside your bag:

1. Pack pants by folding them in half and laying them flat. We recommend placing these at the bottom of your bag so you can easily fit other items on top

2. Roll your tops over the pants. This is best for casual or knit-woven tops that won’t wrinkle too easily. Button-downs or other blouses and dresses are best folded on top of the pants. You can always steam these items once you arrive at your destination.

3. Fold sweaters flat and pack them over the rolled tops, leaving space for your shoes.

4. Pack your shoes inside a shoe bag. Some retailers sell dedicated shoe travel bags for this, but an old drawstring bag will do just fine as well.

5. If you’re traveling with a suit or gown, do not roll it. Either fold it neatly along with your pants or keep them in a garment bag.

When discussing what to pack for a business trip with clients or on our Instagram, we often get asked about packing cubes. Is it worth buying them or other supposed “space-savers”?

We vote no.

When you learn to lean out your wardrobe and you have the right bag, you don’t need anything else.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Set Your Suitcase up for Success

Before we get into our packing list, we have to address the elephant in the room: your closet.

If you don’t have the right pieces in your closet, you won’t have the right pieces in your suitcase either.

Perhaps you’ve got a closet full of too many pieces that don’t go together or don’t fit your current body. Maybe you’ve got a wardrobe of impulse buys that you wore once and ended up regretting.

Chances are, you won’t feel excited or confident about bringing these pieces on your business trip. This leads to overcompensating by overpacking just to try to string one outfit together.

To avoid these feelings in the first place, we recommend a closet clean-out . At NLW, we use a proprietary style system on all of our clients to help them feel confident, gain unlimited outfit options and love their purchases.

Once you’ve invested in the right pieces, colors, and fit, you’re ready to take on any business trip in style.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Our Essential Women’s Business Travel Packing List

Screenshot Of An Instagram Story Advising To Focus On Core Colors When Packing For A Business Trip

In our opinion, you don’t need a completely new outfit for every single day of your trip. The most efficient way to approach what to pack for a business trip is to stick to core colors.

Core colors are black, grey, navy, and white. These neutral shades are versatile enough to endlessly mix and match with each other. For example, with 4 pants, one in each core color, and two tops, you can create 8 different outfits.

Core Colors Triangle with three sections for colors of a closet

You can always add a piece or two in a tonal color (shades of core colors) or an accent color. However, those items should be the minority of what’s in your suitcase.

Here are our clothing recommendations on what to pack for a business trip, item by item:

Tops  – Blouses/dress tops – Casual/t-shirt tops

Bottoms – Denim – Non-Denim options like trousers, slacks, skirts

Dress (If you wear them.)

Layering Pieces (Depending on the climate.) – Sweaters – Blazer – Coat/Jacket

Shoes (Depending on the length of your trip, the MAX amount you should bring is 3.) – Dressy sneakers – Flats – Heels

What to Pack for a Business Trip: FAQs

Woman Dressed In A Brown Trench Carrying A White Suitcase In The Airport For A Business Trip

If you’ve got lingering questions about what to pack on a business trip, keep scrolling for our travel FAQs.

I always overpack, how can I stop doing this?

This all starts with how you approach shopping and building your wardrobe at large. If you have versatile, well-fitting, essential pieces in your wardrobe, you won’t feel the need to over-pack.

Declutter your closet of unnecessary items, and stick to pieces you’ll wear again and again and easily mix and match.

Then, when it’s time for your trip, consult your itinerary and map out exactly what you’ll need for each day. Don’t give into bringing pieces on the off-chance that you’ll unexpectedly need them.

I mean, you’re not bringing every single item from your work desk to your business trip, right? Apply the same thinking to your clothing.

How do you pack for different climates?

Two words: Light layers.

Start off with one essential piece you’ll need for each climate.

Here’s an example. Starting your trip in arid Phoenix, Arizona? Grab a classic tank top in a core color. Next stop: always foggy San Francisco? Block out the bay breeze with a cashmere cardigan. Heading to Toronto in the wintertime? Pack a timeless black or grey coat.

Pair these items back to business-ready trousers or pants and you’re ready for anything.

Is there a set number of clothes you should bring on a business trip?

No. It all depends on the length of your trip, your itinerary, and even the industry you’re in. The packing list above will give you a good baseline to start at. Customize it to fit your needs.

What about non-work clothes for when you’re off the clock on your trip?

No trip is all business all the time. It’s okay to bring a couple of non-workwear items IF (say it with us) you know you’ll wear and need them .

For example, if you’ve scheduled yourself to hit a nearby nature trail on a free morning, go ahead and pack one workout look.

In fact, if you’ve followed all the above steps, you should have room in your suitcase for necessary off-the-clock pieces.

Backpacking Packing List Essentials: The Big Items

These are the items that will probably weight the most and cost the most, so it’s useful to save up and buy the best that you can afford at the beginning.

Again these are the items that we actually take with us while backpacking – there are tons of other options out there, but this gives you a good starting point.

Backpacking Backpack

After trying on a ton of different backpacks, I finally settled on the REI Traverse 60 . The important thing to remember is to find one that fits you the best and feels the most comfortable and fits all of your gear. I also really liked the REI Flash, but as it is SUPER lightweight, and it didn’t feel as durable when using a bear canister. For many people though it is really important what your pack weight is when empty. For me, it was comfort first. It is a good idea to get fitted by professionals at REI to really understand what size bag you need and then try them on from that point.

Other options women really like is the Gregory Deva . This was a second runner up for me, but just didn’t fit quite as well.

I had hoped to go with a smaller 40-50L backpack, but since I have to carry the larger bear canister for both of us, those just didn’t work for me.

My 12 year old has the Osprey Ace 38 , which has worked well for travel and backpacking.

Sleeping Pad

I absolutely love my car camping sleeping pad, so I was sad to get a new one for backpacking, but it was necessary. It was important for me to go with the lightest, most comfortable one on the market, because sleep is king in my book. I bought this Therm-a-Rest inflatable pad . My son uses the foam pad for himself.  My inflatable pad sort of feels flimsy and like a thin garbage bag when you take it out for the first time, but it is lightweight, easy to pack and is perfect to sleep on. I am very happy with it. In recent years more and more folks have been recommending the Nemo ultralight weight pad . I find that it is pretty noisy when used with a Big Agnes tent, but maybe it’s just me!

Sleeping Bag

We are big fans of down sleeping bags and recommend getting a great lightweight bag for all of your camping adventures, not just backpacking. We do not often camp in frigid temperatures. Our bags are 10 degrees for my son and 25 degrees for myself. On our first few trips, we went with the bags we already had –  this Kelty square bag and my son had  this down bag from REI, but it is a bit heavier than I would purchase for him now. If that is all you have, try it out and only invest in more expensive bags once you know this is your thing.

After years of backpacking with heavier gear, we finally upgraded to more lightweight gear, including the Zenbivy quilt system . We LOVE our quilts and wouldn’t change a thing now. They are SO warm, super light and provide more warmth when needed with the clip in system. This system provides the best of both worlds – the snugness of a sleeping bag with the flexibility of a quilt.

Backpacking Tent

This is a backpacking essential where you can really shave off weight depending on how much you are willing to spend and how big of a tent you want. Since it is just me and my 12 year old at the moment, we went for the lightest tent we could afford even though it’s a bit smaller than we would normally like. But unless it is raining, you aren’t spending a ton of time in the tent anyway. (And we have spent an entire 24 hours trapped in it in torrential rain – we survived!)

We love the Nemo brand tents. We have the Nemo Hornet which is great lightweight tent for 2 smaller people. We have used our friends Nemo Dagger which we also really loved. It’s a bit heavier though so we opted for the smaller, lighter tent.

If you really have some cash to burn and can manage with fiddling, consider the super light weight tents suchs as this one that is uber lightweight and spacious.

Trekking Poles

Yes these are under essentials. Not everyone needs them, but I need them while going up hills and especially going down hills! Trekking poles are essential for crossing rivers safety with a big pack as well. The trekking poles we have are no longer available we have had them so long, but I highly recommend Black Diamond and to get the lightest pair you can afford.

Want to know how much everything weighs and keep track of it? Check out this cool website LighterPack where you can enter all of your gear to see what you might need to cut out.

Backpacking Gear List: Water Necessities

Water reservoir.

We have several water reservoir/bladders that we use on a regular basis. For the most part, we both use a 1.5 L Osprey hydration reservoir/bladder , however many people do recommend going higher with a 3L. For a trip where we might have less access to water we would consider bringing that, but they do not fit into our bags with the bear canister as well as the smaller bag. Also note, water weighs about 2.2 lbs for each liter, so this is where a lot of weight comes in.

Water Filter

We have tried a few different water filters through the years. What we used on our first few backpacking trips (the Platypus Quickdraw and the Sawyer Squeeze) , we now no longer use! Between the two of these, the one we preferred was the Platypus as it was light and much easier to use than the much more recommended Sawyer.

These days however, our favorite water filter is actually the Katadyn . We have this in both the 1L and the 3LZ (the 3 liter is only available on Amazon ).  I prefer the 1L even though it means more water refills. It just squeezes out more easily than the 3L. However, we usually take both and end up using the 3L at night to refill all of our water bottles for the next day and for meals. For water sources that aren’t nearby it is much easier.

Some people also suggest bringing an alternative water treatment system just in case, which is why we always have the two with us in case one breaks.

Water Bottles

When you think of backpackers, you probably think of seeing them with Nalgene bottles hanging off their packs. While we like our Nalgene bottles, I will say that the most preferred water bottle for backpackers is actually a Smart Water bottle. These are sturdy water bottles, slim and still hold a liter like the Nalgene does. On our first backpacking trip, we took both – one of each and preferred the Smartwater bottle 9/10 times. It fit perfectly with the water filter we used, was light enough to always bring with us even on day hikes and was easier to drink out of without spilling. After completing the JMT and many other backpacking trips, its safe to say our nalgene doesn’t ever come with us!

Curious how it is to hike the John Muir Trail with a child? Read about our experiences .

Roll-Up Water Bag

In addition to the water bottles, we used to also take a super lightweight rollup Platypus 2L water bag . This is great to use as either an additional dirty water bag to be filtered later or to carry extra water with you during long stretches without water. It is light enough that I would always consider bringing this regardless. Now that we hike with both the 1 and 3 liter Katadyn water filters , we leave this at home.

Backpacking Kitchen Essentials

Backpacking camping stove.

While some people opt to camp without a backpacking stove, I am not one of those people! I like to have a few creature comforts and my 12 year old doesn’t think it’s a meal unless it’s hot! We decided to go for the new Jetboil Stash as it is all in one and packs into one small container. After several years of use I can attest that we still absolutely LOVE it. You can snap the fuel into the pot and it even has space for a small lighter or matchbox. Other people like the MSR pocket rocket and then you can buy/bring the different pots and pans based on what your needs are. For us, for now, we try to just go light and minimal with making foods that just need hot water.

Don’t forget your fuel canister for whatever brand stove you buy. We brought an extra fuel canister which we did not need. Would I bring an extra again.. maybe for a longer trip than 3 days, but on 3 days we boiled water 13 times and still had plenty of fuel left over. It’s hard to know exactly how many burns you will get when you are at varying elevations and depending on the wind, so I would suggest always going with one full can. For bigger groups/families, bring a few!

I bought a small Bic lighter that was perfect. There are also waterproof matches that would be good, but you would need to bring the burnt match back out with you!

We brought two of these sporks which we LOVE. These were in our regular day pack hiking packs long before backpacking.  We also bought one of these long spoons which actually was pretty great to have as well. If we wanted to cut down an ounce we might consider leaving one spork at home and going with only 1 and the long spoon.

As the years have progressed, we now have 2 long spoons and that is all that we take.

Small Knife

I brought a tiny Swiss Army knife and my son brought his regular pocket knife . He used his for carving wood while at camp. I used the scissors on mine to cut moleskin. Some people recommend the Trango , but we don’t have one (yet!) so I can’t say for sure how light or useful it is at this point. But it is on my future list.

My son insisted on bringing his favorite collapsible bowl . I would not bring this bowl again, rather I would find one that didn’t have the grooves in it. I found it difficult to efficiently clean his bowl. That said, we did enjoy having a bowl to share our food more easily. This is a great bowl for pets however or just storing water. After those first few trips, we ended up with this Seat to Summit bowl , which has been a mainstay. It does not collapse, but can clip to the outside of the bag if needed and it cleans super easily.

We brought one cup for each of us – two different types. One was this GSI mug which I love, but is a bit heavier if you are really trying to save a few grams. We also had this simple measuring cup which worked great for measuring out our water for cooking as well as for hot chocolate and eating oatmeal out of.

Small Towel with Biodegradable Soap

One of my spontaneous purchases at REI was this double sided towel for cleaning up. It has a rough side to get off stuck on foods and a soft side. It is a mainstay in our backpacking supply kit. I also poured some CampSuds in a tiny Nalgene reusable bottle for camp soap (Remember your Leave No Trace principles and do not clean dishes anywhere near water sources).

Make sure to bring enough food for each day you will be backpacking. Try your backpacking meals out before you go to make sure you like them. If you don’t love it at home, you won’t love it on the trail, trust me. We like carb rich, creamy foods with plenty of indulgent snacks like Snickers, cookies, peanut M&Ms. Remember to bring a trail mix without chocolate pieces because those do melt! Our absolute favorite meals are these .

Backpacking Checklist for First Aid & Safety

Gps communication device.

This is one of the most expensive items on our backpacking packing list and one we actually borrowed from a friend for our first few trips and ended up buying one second hand. The Garmin In Reach Mini is a must have in my opinion while hiking in the backcountry where you do not have any service. We have had friends need rescuing from total accidents, so for us it is important to always have this on hand.

First Aid Kit

First aid is important to be prepared for on the trail. You never know what will happen. My son actually had a blister on the bottom of his foot before our trip even began, so we were happy to have this lightweight waterproof set from REI which included moleskin. We also added in a few tabs of Benadryl, Rocktape and Sheeps wool just in case.

Headlamp / Lantern

If you are camping in summer, you may not actually need a headlamp, but I would always considering bringing one just in case. We love these rechargeable headlamps as you don’t need to bring extra batteries. While this one is a touch cheaper, we actually prefer this one .

Bear Canister

Depending on where you are backpacking, you might need a bear canister. There are essentially only two types on the market. One is a clear box that comes in several sizes, but most often you will see – a smaller box and a larger box . These are notoriously difficult to open for some people. I am one of those people. Therefore, my only option was to use this type of bear canister , which comes in only 1 massive size!

After a few trips with my heavy bear canister I switched to this carbon fiber one . I LOVE it. I used it for 15 days on the JMT and have used it for every trip since and it is still in great condition. I believe I have the Blazer. Even though the company did not think I could fit in a 7 day food supply for 2 I did pretty easily!

To open my Bearicade can, we both wear a small washer connected to a bracelet that opens it perfectly. The flathead end on the Swiss army knife and the long spoon also opened it easily.

If there is extra space in our bear canister we include all of our kitchen gear inside for extra space in the backpack.

Emergency Rain Gear

We  always check the weather meticulously before setting out on our adventure, but as you know the weather in the backcountry is unpredictable. During short adventures with no expectation of rain, we usually leave our rain gear at home. However when hiking the JMT , we had to have it (and needed it!)

I have lightweight rain pants that I purchased from a random store in Mammoth , but I used this rain jacket which worked out quite well. It doesn’t look amazing, but hey, its to keep dry!

Also, make sure you backpack has a rain cover included or buy one to keep with you. This is your entire life on your back at the moment, so it is best to keep it dry.

As I mention in my post on Backpacking Hacks and Tips , duct tape is an essential backpacking item to have with you. Our recommendation is to wrap a bit around your trekking poles or some other bottle that you will be bringing with you. I put it around a small pencil that my son brings with him.

Essential Backpacking Clothes

Hiking shoes.

For many backpackers, the rugged ankle boots are the way to go. I on the other hand believe in lighter is better and many JMT/PCT thru hikers agree with me. I wear and love my Altra Lone Peak trail runners . They do have higher top shoes as well if you need ankle support. These are lightweight, allow your feet room to spread out which helps with balance and swelling. I have nothing but love for these shoes.

My son wears Merrell high top hiking boots . He has worn these boots since he was 4 increasing in size each year obviously.

The most important factor is comfort and support. Your hiking boots should not cause blisters. If they do, you might need to evaluate them and/or your socks.

My favorite thing in the world these days is wool and this goes for my socks as well. My son wears either Smartwool or Darn Tough wool socks . I have both Smartwool and a local LA brand Comrad. I prefer my Comrad compression wool ankle socks the most because I typically hike in a dress and don’t like having socks up my legs, but they have been out of stock for ages. I have been trying these out in their place which seem to work decently well.

Whatever you like, but just make sure you get wool socks. They will absorb moisture to help prevent blisters. Wool is also antibacterial which reduces stink. I brought 2 pairs for myself and washed one pair at night to switch out. My son brought 3 pairs.

Wool Base Layer Long Sleeves

I love wool. I will say it again. The only long sleeve item I had with me was my long sleeve lightweight base layer from Smartwool. It is super comfortable so that I can wear it even in the heat of the day to keep the sun off my arms. It keeps me warm in the morning chill and doesn’t rub when I wear it with my backpack on. Highly recommend having a merino wool long sleeve base layer in your backpacking packing list arsenal. My 12 year old had his wool base layers that also acted as PJs.

These days I much prefer my ultra light wool hoodie that keeps my arms covered in the heat of the day, but can also be worn as a long sleeve layer.

Down Puffy Jacket

Everyone needs a down puffy jacket. I have a Patagonia jacket that I bought 5 years ago when we went to Alaska that is still going strong. Yes, these jackets are expensive, but they are so worth it. For children, you can consider the REI brand down puffy jacket or even this one from Shred Dog which is even more economical, but provides the same power, strength and comfort in a lightweight package.

Hiking Pants

Hiking pants for me means leggings. I love my Prana leggings , but found they were a little too heavy for much of our backpacking since it’s quite warm in the day. Instead, I opt for wool of course! I LOVE these bike shorts that I wear under my Wool& dress . I also always bring one long pant. Depending on the weather I might bring these lightweight leggings or these thicker leggings if it’s going to be cold or I’m only using them at night and in the morning.

My son wore a pair of long pants and brought a pair as extra. In the future we may cut out the second pair and opt for shorts depending on the weather forecasts.

Clean Underwear

Ladies, just bring the clean underwear for each day you are on the trail. You will be much happier putting on clean undies every day, trust me. This is the best way to feel fresh and clean without a shower. This is a must for my backpacking packing list! My go to are these wool undies.

Wool is the way to go here too! I typically just take one and it is great at the end still. This one is great .

Camp Shoes (Optional, but useful)

One item that might be included under luxury and comfort items is a pair of camp shoes. I disagree and feel it is a must have item. Your feet need to breathe and get a rest when you are at camp. After lots of trial and error using super lightweight backpacking type sandals, I have ended up loving my Birkenstocks .

Clothes for Cool Weather

If you are camping during spring or fall, your backpacking packing list might need to include items for colder weather. We did not need any items for colder weather even though we were high in the mountains. If you do, considering bringing thermals to sleep in, a beanie and gloves.

We did bring with us 2 buffs that were great to cover our heads during sunny moments, cover our necks and to get wet and wrap around our necks when we were hot.

Backcountry Toiletries

Poop shovel.

Yep, you read that correctly, you will need a poop shovel on your backpacking packing list. We love this super light weight, but very sturdy shovel. In addition to this, you will also need toilet paper and a ziplock bag to carry out your dirty paper. Yep. It’s not as bad as it sounds to be honest. As my friend calls it, poo with a view.

My favorite hiking accessory these days is my Kula Cloth pee rag. This thing is really great and really helps reduce any extra smells that can build up from drip drying. Use this for pee only.

Zip Lock Bags

As much as I hate to use zip lock bags, these were our best friend during backpacking. From food waste to trash, we used them all the time. Bring the light weight sandwich bags for dry waste and a the freezer quart size to pour hot water into while cooking.

Hand Sanitizer

While this isn’t a necessity on a backpacking packing list, I highly recommend bringing a small tube of hand sanitizer that was useful for quick uses after going to the bathroom. You don’t need a ton though, so don’t worry about a big bottle.

Sunscreen and sun protection (aka hats) are a must for all summer backpacking packing lists. We took a small tub of stick sunscreen, but next time I will take a liquid version instead even though it may not hold as much. I found that I was less likely to put the stick on my arms and legs, which did get quite a bit of sun. Bring what works best for you.

For most backpacking packing lists, it is recommended to take baby wipes. I decided to try the Sea to Summit Large Body wipes, and I was very happy with these as they are scent free (meaning they didn’t have to go in my bear box, but I put them there anyway!) and are quite large. I could easily wipe my face and neck down, legs and feet with just one wipe. Remember you must pack out what you bring, so take an extra ziplock bag for the dirty wipes.

Chapstick / Lip Balm

The mountain air always makes my lips get chapped, so I made sure to bring along my favorite SPF chapstick . Love this stuff!

Toothbrush & Toothpaste

For many people, small tube of toothpaste is the best option for backpacking. However, we have something even better! Bites Toothpaste are tiny small round pill shaped bits that are actually toothpaste. They are great because they are small, totally dissolve and are better for the environment. Pack your Bites in a small button sized bag and you are good to go. For ultra lightweight toothbrushes, consider getting bamboo brushes.

Small Hairbrush

A small hairbrush is not a necessity at all for most backpacking packing lists, but since both my son and I have long tangle prone hair, we decided at the last minute to bring our tiny hairbrush. I am so happy we did as well. It felt nice to be able to brush my hair that was super sweaty and tangled up from being in a hat. This is up to you though.. bring it or not.

Optional Backpacking Gear List

Insect repellent &/or bug spray wipes.

Depending on where you are going and what season, you may need to bring bug spray and/or wipes. I brought my favorite Doterra Bug Spray oil as well as a few packets of Natrapel wipes . I like the wipes better than spray only because I can easily get under my clothes without worrying about staining.

Pro Tip: Spray all of your clothes with Permethrin before you head out on the trails to keep your clothes bug free.

Backpacking Pillow

For me, this is a must have on my personal backpacking packing list. I took this really lightweight blow up pillow which was wonderful to have and didn’t add much weight.

Small External Battery Pack

Over time I have upgraded my battery packs to these . I take two on most trips because they are small and light and hold a good charge. For shorter trips you probably only need one as most things will hold a good charge. For long hikes and backpacking trips, I love this solar panel that is super light and helps to refill my battery packs during the day as I hike.

Lightweight Quick Dry Towel

Not a necessity on your backpacking packing list, rather a good idea if you are planning to be around lakes or rivers, is a quick dry towel. We took two small ones, which I would probably take again. One we used for dishes and the other we used for our feet and to sit on by the lake.

Printed Out Permit

For most backcountry hikes in California you will need a permit. Make sure to print out your permit and your camping stove permit to carry with you along the route.

ID, Cash & Car Key

Depending on what you are doing, it might be important to also carry your ID, a bit of cash or a credit card and your car key. It is useful to have a few of your important items in case of an emergency. I did not take any cash because I knew we were doing an out and back trail, but for any thru hikes I think it’s important to have just in case you need to catch a bus or ride.

Table of Contents

Weekend trips seem like they should be the easiest ones to pack for. But they always end up being the hardest.

Weekends should be simple. The trip is short, the weather won’t vary much, and you probably know what you’ll be doing.

But packing light for a weekend trip can pose a challenge. We all tend to pack as much as we can fit, not just what we need. Whether you’re traveling for a weekend or a month, you’ll probably fill your backpack or suitcase. When you have the space, you start adding stuff you’ll never need, like an extra pair of shoes or a just-in-case outfit.

Your stuff will expand to fill your bag.

To combat this tendency, stick to a short weekend trip packing list and pack a small bag.

3-Day Weekend Packing List

Let’s start off with a quick checklist for a three-day, two-night weekend trip. The packing list below assumes that you leave on Friday, stay Friday and Saturday nights, then return home on Sunday.

For clothing, we’ve included your travel day (or in-flight) clothing in the packing list.

  • 1 pair of shoes
  • 3 sets of underwear
  • 3 pairs of socks (1-2 pairs if wearing merino wool socks )
  • 1 set of pajamas
  • Toiletry bag
  • Water bottle
  • Phone, charger , and earbuds or headphones
  • Book or Kindle

Consider at least one “nice” outfit depending on your plans. Dressing up—especially if you don’t have to—can make a nice dinner feel like a special occasion when you’re traveling.

Optional Add-Ons

  • Eye mask and ear plugs
  • Hat, scarf, and/or gloves for winter trips

Carry-On-Sized Travel Backpacks

Pack for trips of one week or more without checking a bag.

  • Thick comfortable straps
  • Easy to organize
  • Durable, waterproof fabric
  • Backed by our Worldwide Warranty

Travel Day Outfit

The outfit you wear to travel should be the bulkiest outfit of the trip, especially if you’re flying. Wear your biggest, heaviest clothes—jeans, sweater, boots, jacket—so that you can save space in your bag. If you’re too warm, you can always remove a layer after takeoff and store it in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

If you’re flying, your travel outfit should include a  light jacket with zippered pockets. The pockets will provide extra space for packing things like your wallet, phone, chapstick, boarding pass, and other travel day essentials . The zippers will keep your stuff secured when you go through airport security.

Shoes are always a challenge when packing. It’s easy to convince yourself that you need a second pair, even for a three-day trip. Resist this temptation. Instead, pack one pair of shoes  you can wear all weekend. Your shoes must be comfortable enough for walking all day but nice enough to wear out to dinner.

In the winter, choose warm, comfortable boots. Sandals or sneakers work well in nicer weather. You can always add flip flops for the beach or pool if needed. Most will fit in your backpack’s water bottle pocket.

Electronics

Be careful not to overpack electronics. For such a short trip, you can leave your work computer at home. Since you’ll either be driving or taking a short flight, skip the tablet too. Your flight might be too short to watch a movie anyway.

A Kindle is my favorite in-flight entertainment for short trips. You’ll also have your phone and earbuds if you prefer to listen to music or a podcast.

When it comes to toiletries, take only the essentials. If you can live without it or survive with a different brand for a day or two, leave it at home.

Choose a hotel or an Airbnb that provides basics so that you don’t have to bring soap or shampoo.

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Contact solution, if needed
  • Basic makeup, if needed
  • Soap, shampoo, and conditioner (only if not provided by your accommodation)

Consider if you can pool resources and share the packing burden with your travel companions. Do you each need to bring your own bottle of sunscreen or can one person bring a bottle for everyone to share?

If you forget anything, just grab a cheap option at your destination. You can bring home any leftovers so that you aren’t being wasteful.

Long Weekend Packing List

If you’re staying over Sunday night and heading home on Monday, use this list instead.

  • 4 sets of underwear
  • 4 pairs of socks (2 pairs if wearing merino wool socks )
  • Phone, charger, and earbuds or headphones

Wedding Weekend Packing List

Weddings may require packing a bit more.

You’ll need an extra pair of shoes and one or two extra outfits so that you’re always dressed appropriately. In addition to dress clothes for the wedding, consider what you’ll need for the rehearsal dinner or Sunday morning activities if either will be part of the festivities.

  • 2 pairs of shoes (1 pair for the wedding, 1 pair for everything else)
  • 5 outfits (1 casual outfit for each day plus the wedding and rehearsal dinner)
  • 4 pairs of socks (3 casual, 1 dress)

Best Weekend Backpack

We recommend packing a bag that’s made for travel—not just the old duffel at the back of your closet—especially if you’re flying. You’ll need a bag that’s optimized for packing , getting through security, and being accessible in-flight. Depending on how and what you’re packing, we recommend two options.

Travel Water Bottle

Why You Should Pack Last Minute

Packing last minute sounds sacrilegious, especially for Type A travelers. But hear me out.

You don’t need to bring much for a weekend getaway, so you won’t need much planning or packing time.

If you wait until the night before your trip to pack, you can be even more efficient. Check the weather last minute so that you know it won’t change (much). By then, you’ll also know your weekend plans and can pack and dress accordingly.

No need to worry about any “just in case” stuff.

Pack a small backpack and limit yourself to one outfit (or less) per day.
