2024 – Whisky Distillery Tours from Inverness
You tell us that you love our whisky distillery tours from Inverness because of the wide choice of distilleries, and our unique whisky tales. Wherever in the world we find our whisky, it is always made from three main ingredients; grain, water and yeast. We, at Inverness Tours, think that the folk who make Scotch whisky are the fourth secret ingredient. Let us introduce you. Legally, Scotch has to be distilled and matured in Scotland and spend a minimum of three years in the barrel. We are pleased to help our guests sample and learn more about the range of whiskies out there waiting for them. Our visitors travel in comfort during our private group tours due to our roomy and air-conditioned seven-passenger vehicles.

Highland – Whisky Distillery Tours from Inverness
We do enjoy taking folks on our Highland Whisky Distillery Tours from Inverness because these malts include Scotland’s favourites. We find Highland malts to be robust and dry, with a rounded depth and sweetness. In some areas they also carry fruit and spice. We have three tours that visit Highland Distilleries. The first is the Highland Distillery Tour from Inverness and it visits Glenmorangie; Balblair or Dalmore and Glen Moray. The second is the Highland and Speyside Distillery Tour from Inverness and it visits Glenfiddich; Glenlivet and Tomatin. The third is the West Coast and Highland Distillery Tour from Inverness and it visits Ben Nevis; Dalwhinnie and Tomatin.

Glenmorangie Distillery
Glenmorangie Distillery has been legally distilling whisky since 1843. It is clearly Scotland’s favourite because it is the biggest single malt whisky seller on the domestic market. You could take a tour followed by a dram. You’ll learn about the secret recipe, the unique water source and the famed sixteen men of Tain.
Balblair Distillery
Balblair Distillery is one of the older distilleries in the Highlands, legally established by local man, John Ross, in 1790. The distillery featured Ken Loach’s 2012 award-winning comedy film “The Angels’ Share”. Since 2019 Balblair has been producing a new range, and each is a unique variation of the distillery’s Highland spirit.
Dalmore Distillery
Dalmore Distillery, built in 1839, sits on the shore of the Cromarty Firth. Mackenzies bought it in 1867, bringing the Mackenzie emblem and motto with them. This means that you can now recognise Dalmore by the twelve pointed Royal Stag’s head. The Mackenzie motto seems made for a whisky, because it is Luceo non Uro, meaning I Shine not Burn!
Glen Ord Distillery
Glen Ord Distillery first legally produced whisky in 1838. It is one of only a few in Scotland that still malts its own barley. The whisky produced here is also very rare, as it all goes to south-east Asia. This distillery is the only place you will be able to buy this excellent whisky. The distillery also has a choice of a full tour of the facility or a shorter visit to film and exhibition. Both options include a tasting.
Tomatin Distillery
Tomatin Distillery (a Highland Distillery dating from 1897) was the site of much earlier illicit stills. The name means “the hill of the Juniper bushes”. Moonshiners like using Juniper when they are making illicit spirit because the bushes give off no smoke when burned.
Dalwhinnie Distillery
Speyside – Whisky Distillery Tours from Inverness
You often ask us about our Speyside Whisky Distillery Tours from Inverness. This is because the Speyside malts are, perhaps, the best known group in Scotland. We find nearly half of all distilleries in Scotland in this area because the rivers that feed the Spey are perfect for making whisky. The Speyside whiskies are elegant & complex in taste, while still open & delicate. We enjoy Speyside because there are a great variety of distilleries and they are all quite easy to reach from Inverness. We have two tours that visit Speyside Distilleries. The first is the Speyside Distillery Tour from Inverness and it visits Macallan; Glen Grant and Glen Moray. The second is the Highland and Speyside Distillery Tour from Inverness and it visits Glenfiddich; Glenlivet and Tomatin.
Glenfiddich Distillery
William Grant set up Glenfiddich, a Speyside distillery, in Dufftown in 1886. We call Dufftown the Malt Whisky Capital of the World because there are still six working malt whisky distilleries in the town. The Grant family still own Glenfiddich now and have made it the best selling malt whisky in the world.
Glenlivet Distillery
Glenlivet Distillery, a Speyside distillery built in 1824, runs a close second in global whisky sales. Number one in the USA, Pernod Ricard own it now. The taste that we describe as “a light-tasting spirit” is due to the tall, narrow necks of the stills.
The Macallan Distillery
The Macallan is third in the global single malt whisky sales table. This Speyside distillery, found near Craigellachie, was built in 1824. The new distillery and Macallan Visitor Experience opened in 2018 at a cost of £140 million, well spent as they took top place in Scotland’s Best Building Award as a result.
Glen Grant Distillery
Campari now own the Glen Grant Distillery in the town of Rothes and because of this Glen Grant has become the biggest selling single malt in Italy. This Speyside distillery was founded by the moonshiners the Grant brothers who decided to go legitimate in 1840. There are lovely woodland gardens here.
Glen Moray Distillery
Glen Moray Distillery in the city of Elgin was founded in 1897. This Speyside distillery is known for innovation. Bold developments such as the release of two expressions of Glen Moray matured in Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc Casks respectively. Depending on time Glen Moray offer either a tour or tastings.
West Coast – Whisky Distillery Tours from Inverness
The West Coast Whisky Distillery Tours from Inverness take us deep into the mountains and islands on the western seaboard. We can find distilleries from Kintyre to the Isle of Lewis. There are folks who give the island of Islay and the town of Campbeltown groups of their own. But to keep it simple I group them all together. Their character is more smoky and more peaty, with hints of the salt and the iodine of the ocean. The spirit, too, is thicker and more viscous. If it was wine, we would say it had more legs. We have two tours that visit West Coast Distilleries. The first is the West Coast Distillery Tour from Inverness and it visits Torabhaig and Ben Nevis. The second is the West Coast and Highland Distillery Tour from Inverness and it visits Ben Nevis; Dalwhinnie and Tomatin.
Torabhaig Distillery
Torabhaig is the newest distillery on the Isle of Skye, but occupy old farm buildings, on a stunning site above Knock Bay. The owners are proud of the long history. Although the farm buildings were first built in 1820 it was using stones taken from the nearby ivy-clad ancient ruin of Castle Camus. Work began on Torabhaig in 2014, and café, shop and distillery tours soon followed.
Ben Nevis Distillery
Edinburgh or Glasgow Whisky Distilleries Tour
We offer this tour from Edinburgh and Glasgow. This is due to the success of our Outlander Tours. Our Outlander Tours from Edinburgh are so successful that we recruited a great guide from that area, to deliver them. It made sense for us to ensure that he was a whisky expert too. So, we now offer one standard “Highland and Lowland Whisky Distillery Tour” from Glasgow and Edinburgh. If taken from Edinburgh it visits Deanston Distillery, Glenturret Distillery and Glenkinchie Distillery. If taken from Glasgow it visits Deanston Distillery, Glenturret Distillery and Auchentoshan Distillery.
Multi Day Whisky Distillery Tours from Inverness
We begin to identify your best options by finding areas blessed with several whisky distilleries with good visitor facilities. This helps us to see a number of destination regions emerge. These include the island of Islay, the Orkney Islands, the NorthEast250, the Outer Hebrides and finally the Isle of Skye and West Highlands. We can look at each of these in turn.
The Island of Islay
The island of Islay (pronounced eye-la) is often called the Queen of the Hebrides. There are nine working distilleries on the island and all of them offer guided tours. The annual Islay Whisky Festival generally occurs in late May, and there is a wide range of music and activities. Islay also has fantastic scenery, wildlife and a rich history. This includes the last unbroken 1200 year-old ringed Celtic cross in the country, and also the ruins of the hall house of the Lords of the Isles.
The Orkney Islands
The Orkney Islands have two whisky distilleries both located in (or near) the largest town in Orkney, which is Kirkwall. Both Scapa Distillery and Highland Park Distillery would be categorised as Highland malts and both offer very good tours. While on Orkney there are a myriad of topics to enthral – from archaeology to craft made wonders, and exceptional food & drink to wildlife and walks.
The NorthEast 250
Grampian or the NorthEast250 are two ways to describe the area that lies east of Inverness and north of Aberdeen. The fertile fields surrounding us as we travel are perfect for growing the barley for the local whisky. It is an area with pretty towns, stunning coastlines and ancient castles but also blessed with several great distilleries. These include Glen Garioch, Strathisla, GlenDronach, Royal Lochnagar and Glenglassaugh.
The Outer Hebrides
The Western Isles (or Outer Hebrides) have two distilleries (the Abhainn Dearg on the Isle of Lewis, and further south the Isle of Harris Distillery). These are located on the same landmass although it doesn’t sound like that. You could also visit Dun Carloway Broch, Callanish Stone Circles (Brave and Outlander) or a walk on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Isle of Skye and West Highlands

Uile-bheist will be a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky like no other. Made with 100% locally sourced barley and pure water from the fast-flowing River Ness, the wash is fermented using Uile-bheist’s own brewer’s ale yeast for a unique character. Our stills, as well as being proportionally tall for their size, have a ‘boil bulb’ where the body of the still meets the neck. Together, these create added reflux, leading to a lighter spirit.
Our new make spirit is then matured in the finest, handpicked ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, along with other unique casks from around the world. “As a small batch craft distiller, we manage every step of the process meticulously, ensuring each and every drop of Uile-bheist Single Malt is worth the wait.”
Our ethos is inspired by thousands of years of Scottish folklore, aiming to connect Scotland’s ancient past with the present.

INVERNESS WHISKY TOUR
Explore the rich and interesting history of whisky making in Inverness and the Northern Highlands.
Inverness and the Northern Highlands have a rich and interesting history in whisky making. One of the first accounts of a whisky style spirit being consumed was when King James IV was in Inverness during September 1506, the Treasurer’s Accounts had entries for the 15th and 17th of the month: ‘For aqua vite to the King. . .’ and ‘For ane flacat of aqua vite to the King. . .’. lt is more than likely that the Aquavitae in this case was spirit for drinking. Follow the footsteps of Royalty on your Inverness Whisky Tour.
The whisky from this region is some of the most prestigious and famous in the world. Glenmorangie and Brora are well known and respected worldwide. There are also lesser known gems such as Tomatin and Balblair close by.

We've included the online booking and phone booking information in each distillery profile below.
There are only so many distillery tours you can do in a day. I recommend you pick your favourite TWO.
You can certainly stop by other distilleries, have a look, take some photos and do a tasting (or grab yourself a bottle to take home) but if you’re trying to do more than two distillery tours, you’re going to be pushing for time. The routes below are around 3 hours of driving excluding all other activities . If you allow two tours, you’re already at 5-6 hours for the day, minimum. Most distilleries run tours between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm (last tour at 4 pm), but this varies depending on the time of year (most close earlier Nov – Mar). Remember to consider this when you’re picking your destinations, and prepare for a long day.
Hot Tip For the Designated Driver: most distilleries will permit you to ‘take away’ your tasting dram.
Many distilleries provide glass bottle miniatures for this purpose and some will provide little plastic containers. Always ask and see if you can do ‘take away’ or ‘take home’ samples. In case they don’t have any suitable ‘take away’ vessels, stop by a pharmacy/chemist shop and see if you can buy a ‘sample’ container. Yes, it’s a urine/specimen sample container! Don’t worry as they’ll be sterile and the screw top lids are perfect for keeping whisky safe because they don’t leak.
Another option is to buy some glass screw top containers before you go - the glass wont react with the alcohol, although, being glass, it is more susceptible to being broken if dropped or knocked.

The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom
One of Amanda's favourite books. Around 1885, Alfred Barnard was secretary of Harper's Weekly Gazette, a journal dedicated to the wine and spirit trade. In order to provide his readers with the history and descriptions of the whisky-making process, Barnard decided to visit all distilleries in Scotland, England and Ireland. Accompanied by friends, he visited and sketched over 150 distilleries, including many of the now 'lost' distilleries of Campbeltown.
Spirit of Place
Spirit of Place by Charles MacLean, with photographs by Lara Platman and Allan Macdonald, is a unique addition to the literature on Scotch whisky, from the world's greatest expert on the subject. The perfect gift for anyone planning a tour of Scotland's distilleries, a souvenir for anyone who has visited them, and simply the perfect companion to a dram at home. Campbeltown is overlooked as a region, but Spirit of Place does feature Springbank as part of the 'West Highlands' distillery profiles.

If you’re visiting Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland and are partial to a sip of the “water of life” then a trip to at least one Inverness distillery is a must – or rather a distillery in the region of Speyside, which is to the south and east of the city. Inverness whisky is typically light and sweet, often with a fruity flavour, and is made with water from the River Spey. Plenty of distilleries can be reached by train or taxi from Inverness, allowing you to taste their wares during your trip.
