Concert review: A look back at James Blunt’s “Who We Used To Be” tour
James Blunt likes the punctuality of the Swiss. So the hall lights went out pretty much exactly at 9 pm. The four-member band got ready at their instruments in the dark. An electrying intro started. My heart was beating with excitement, just like the glowing ECG on the huge LED screen in the background. Images of the British musician appeared on the screen. The Feelgood song “Beside You” got off to a rousing rhythmic start when James finally entered the stage with his red guitar and immediately put everyone in a good mood. People were immediately clapping, jumping and singing along. Those who were still expecting a schmaltzy concert today were proven wrong with the first few songs.
Finally I saw James Blunt live again! It’s my 12th show of him. It could be 13th if Covid hadn’t intervened. After James Blunts’ 2020 tour was postponed by around 3 years due to the pandemic, I ended up sitting at home Covid-positive and heartbroken on the day of the concert. This concert felt all the better now! At the latest during “Carry You Home” I got wet eyes. It felt really good to finally hear and see him live again. Singing along to his songs from “Wisemen” to “Postcards” at the top of my voice, waving cell phones and hands – and getting down on my knees if I had to. We do it for James Blunt! And you don’t want to be the one he’s pointing at in a hall of 15,000 people because you’re standing still…
“I already have your money!”
He had a new album, new jeans and the same old f**king band with him on the new tour, James grinned cheekily and assured us that we would only hear new, unheard material for the next 3 hours. The audience found this difficult and made it clear that they also wanted to hear some of the old hits. “Well, I’ve already got your money!” James waved it away with a laugh. Over the course of the evening, James proved that he is still going strong and successful with his sarcastic, British humor, honesty and charm. After all, he still fills the big arenas even after a 20-year career. The audience is mixed, including many young fans.
“Who we used to be” is James Blunt’s seventh studio album. The British singer-songwriter, who spends a lot of time with us in Switzerland (Verbier VS), has once again created a solid pop album. In addition to great uptempo songs, it also contains the great, soulful ballads for which James Blunt is known. “Who we used to be” is an album about the joys and challenges of life, about ageing and about loss. James doesn’t just say that it’s a grown-up album, you can hear and feel it. The musician reached #4 in the Swiss album charts with “Who we used to be” and made it to #3 in his native UK.
From the sea of lights to the electro beats
James Blunts’ debut album “Back To Bedlam”, which included the debut single “High” and his smash hit “You’re Beautiful”, was released by the former soldier almost 20 years ago. Of course, both songs could not be missing from today’s set. The album was one of the 10 best-selling albums of the decade.
During the album recordings in Los Angeles at the time, James lived with Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher (Princess Leah) for a long time. He wrote “Dark Thought” for her, in which he came to terms with her death. A beautiful piano song that can be found on his latest work and the current tour setlist.

During “Glow”, James Blunt transformed the Hallenstadion into a huge sea of lights and because he liked it so much, he did it again during “Same Mistake”. He’s not shy of people either – he threw himself into the audience for “Coz I love you” and let them carry him on their hands for a bit of crowdsurfing.
A little dance to my favorite “Postcards”, electro beats to “OK” and of course vocal choirs to all his hits: it was once again incredibly varied and soothing. The only negative: it could have lasted much longer than the 90 minutes or so.
Luckily, James Blunt is playing two more festivals this summer: Summerdays Arbon and the Seaside Festival Spiez.
Tors opened for James Blunt
Incidentally, James Blunt was supported by the indie folk band Tors. When they played with ESC participant Sam Ryder in Zurich’s Papiersaal in October 2022, some of my colleagues already wrote to me saying “you’d like them”. And they were all right: Tors are great!
Tors are the two brothers Matt and Theo Weedon and their friend Jack Bowdenatt. The three come from the county of Devon, in south-west Enfgand, and began releasing their music in November 2016. The band’s name comes from ancient stone sculptures that stood in Dartmoor National Park, where they spent weekends as children.
Tors know how to reach their audience. Beautiful, harmonious and melodious, yet incredibly captivating, Tors led the audience through the short set in their sympathetic way. With songs like “Miracle”, “Happy Enough” or “Amsterdam”, which quickly became Zurich, the audience loved them from the very first note.

Own tour in September
After the show, Tors signed autographs and took photos. So I immediately picked up their album “Anything can happen”. The trio will also be going on their own tour in September. I definitely want to be there. You should too!
All in all, the evening with James Blunt and Tors was not just a concert, but an unforgettable musical journey through the highs and lows of life. The setlist, from “Beside You” to the encores “Monsters”, “Bonfire Heart” and “1973”, reflected the diversity and quality of James Blunt’s career. An evening that celebrated the love of music and the connection between the artist and his audience.

Unbelievable! Best show I've ever been to! He has such an amazing voice and is so natural with it. He makes the show inclusive for the audience and his funny stories really tie the experience together.

An amazing performance with so much energy. Far far better than we even hoped. The only criticism was that the onscreen projection audio and video were out of synch, which was really irritating. We were sitting near the techies and I passed the info to the security guys who were literally only 3m from the sound desk but they didn’t bother passing the message on. Shame as I had explained that I’m a videographer so wasn’t just complaining to be a nuisance. I really hope they don’t make the same mistake throughout the tour!
I didn't know what to expect. 11,000 fans at Manchester Victoria and he didn't disappoint. His voice is so unique, the songs catchy and at times emotional. It felt like I knew all the songs even though I can guess I had only listened to about 5. Not once was I disappointed. He engaged the audience as though we were all friends. The band were tight and I liked the 3 floating screens. Well worth £25 of anyone's money and will be back next time he tours

Concert review: JAMES BLUNT good feelings and desire to sing (Info and setlist)
March 2, 2024
Crowd for James Blunt who returned to play in Italy for a single date at the Forum in Assago, this evening, Saturday 2 March 2024.
Honestly, I’ve never been a big fan of Blunt, I’ll admit it straight away. Even though I knew almost all the songs played this evening, he is one of those artists that I always listen to distractedly without ever really hearing him.
The concert was therefore a wonderful opportunity to consolidate my opinion of disinterest or change my mind and start listening to his music better.
A well-balanced set that lasted just over an hour and a half with a clean stage with a large horizontal wall and a lighting set without major special effects, made with chandeliers that rose and fell as necessary, making it intimate and almost club the scenario.
I was afraid of falling into the honey of his pop made of romance and melancholy, but instead Blunt managed to propose the right alternation of slow, acoustic, piano and super sugary songs with dynamic ballads that made the Forum dance and sing.
James on stage, together with his four-piece band, did not hold back, he sang, played the guitar, played the piano, danced, talked and even did a tribute round of hugs in the Forum parterre for the occasion , set up with all the seats.
The setlist includes all his main hits which led him to win two BRIT Music Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards, including the global hits “You’re Beautiful”, “Bonfire Heart” and “1973”. Among the songs there are also some songs from his latest album “WhoWe Used To Be” released last year.
A comment also on the public. I didn’t expect to find such a full forum. Crowding the stands and audience were a varied population of thirty and forty year olds. Few very young people. Perhaps the same audience that crowds stadiums and arenas for characters like Ed Sheeran, Coldplay or on the Italian front the Nuclear Tactical Penguins. A composed audience that wants to stimulate good feelings and be filled with love and romance.
In the end it was a beautiful evening. I won’t become a fan of Blunt, but at least this time I listened carefully to his music and in the end I liked it!

James Blunt Set To Tour For ‘Who We Used To Be’
Internationally renowned pop rock artist james blunt has announced an accompanying tour for his upcoming seventh album, titled ‘who we used to be’, which was announced on august 2nd. his first full-length release since 2019’s ‘once upon a mind’, which hit #3 on the uk albums chart, the album has been one of the most highly anticipated releases of the still-young decade – and the leap year tour is equally anticipated, with the rare opportunity to see one of the best selling artists of the 2000s/10s in person..
James Blunt (originally spelled Blount) is easily described as a jack of all trades – besides his multi-platinum music career, he has been a pilot, a philanthropist, and strangely enough, a military vet that could’ve started World War 3. He was a key figure in the Incident at Pristina, a confrontation between Russian and NATO forces in the aftermath of the Kosovo War, where he refused orders to attack the Russian forces, perhaps saving thousands of lives. Since leaving the military in 2002, Blunt settled down into a more peaceful life, giving up the guns for the guitars, and started recording music. Blunt’s 2004 debut, ‘Back to Bedlam’, was at one point the best selling album of the 21st century in the UK, and continues to be the best-selling debut by a British artist ever – he hasn’t slowed down a bit since 2004, either, and he continues to rock the world with albums like ‘Who We Used To Be’.
Blunt’s seventh album continues the same emotional, deeply rooted musical style that his first album employed. The album’s first single, ‘Beside You’, has already captured the hearts of national and international audiences alike for Blunt’s powerful vocal delivery, the emotions behind the song and the brilliant music video released alongside it, which came with the album’s announcement earlier this month. ‘Beside You’ will undoubtedly be one of the tracks that Blunt performs when he goes on tour during the next year of the dragon, which you can find out more about later this month, when more information becomes available.
Watch the video for ‘Beside You’ here , and stay tuned for more info on Blunt’s latest tour/album.

James Blunt announces European tour for album ‘Who We Used To Be’; where is he playing in the UK + tickets
James Blunt is set to tour Europe in 2024 in conjunction with the release of his new album, “Who We Used To Be.”
Taking time away from being perhaps one of the funniest, self-referential musicians to grace Twitter/X, musician James Blunt is set to release his brand new album “Who We Used To Be” on October 27 2023 and to celebrate, the “ You’re Beautiful ” singer has announced a widespread tour of Europe earlier today - with a number of UK dates confirmed in the process.
This would mark, according to Setlist.FM , the second time since 2022 that James Blunt will have performed live when he took to the stage at Feel Good festival in Belgium in September of that year, with a forthcoming BBC Radio 2 In The Park performance scheduled for September 16 2023.
The polarising singer first shot to fame through the release of his second single, “You’re Beautiful” from his album “ Back to Bedlam ” in 2005, which topped a number of singles charts across the world and at one stage could boast that his single “Goodbye, My Lover” was the most requested funeral song back in 2006. Though the singer has had detractors within the music industry (namely reviewers), he still remains a popular figure - especially thanks to his online presence.
Blunt has been known to take to Twitter at times to call out fans who have attempted to belittle him, and showing that he isn’t a “super serious artist” trope has on more than one occasion shown his lighter side. He performed a version of his hit single on Sesame Street , changing the lyrics to “My Triangle,” becoming one of a number of modern artists to grace the hallowed Children’s Workshop/Jim Henson Workshop institution.
“Who We Used To Be” is available for preorder now on vinyl and CD formats through the musician’s website, including an interesting looking “lenticular” CD edition and a recycled vinyl edition.
