How to eat low carb and keto when traveling

Jennifer Calihan

Are you tired of lousy food options at every airport, train station or rest stop? Hit the road with confidence. A little preparation goes a long way. We’ve made it easy with this guide to low carb travel.

  • Commit to success

1. Eat well before departing

Fill up on your low carb favorites before you leave. Home is the easiest place to eat right. Don’t rush – start your journey nourished and satisfied.

A filling low carb breakfast before your travel begins can be quick and easy – hardboiled eggs, cooked bacon, reheated egg muffins , or plain Greek yogurt with cream, berries, and nuts. If you have more time, sauté sausage with mushrooms and tomatoes or slice an avocado and enjoy with olive oil or mayonnaise.

2. Pack low carb snacks

When the flight attendant passes out pretzels, resist temptation and reach for one of these delicious and portable snacks tucked in your carry-on:

  • Nuts and nut butters (Which nuts are best? Check out our guide .)
  • Peeled hard-boiled eggs – don’t forget some salt!
  • Jerky, dry salami and cooked bacon
  • Low carb Sesame Crispbread
  • Parmesan Cheese Crisps
  • Celery filled with cream cheese or nut butter
  • Ham and cheese roll-ups
  • Crudité with dip
  • Salmon and Cream Cheese Bites
  • Leftovers (yesterday’s low carb dinner makes a great snack or meal)
  • Butter (for coffee, tea and crisps)
  • Olive oil (for salads and veggies)
  • Dark chocolate (≥ 70% cacao; no more than a couple of squares per day.)

You could pack your snacks in their original containers or in a plastic bag. But you could also get creative, like in the picture at the top.

Here are some smart containers to make travel easier, and keep your food fresh for longer:

  • soap case (for butter)
  • 4-oz leak-proof bottle (for olive oil)
  • squeezable 3oz GoToob (for nut butter, mayo)
  • medium GoTubb (for nuts, cream cheese, dip)
  • toothbrush case (for bacon)
  • salt & pepper shaker
  • chilled bento box (for veggies, cheese, dip)
  • chilled salad shaker
  • chilled yogurt and berries container

When in doubt, pop your container into a large zip-lock plastic bag for extra protection against leaks.

3. Use coffee to keep hunger at bay

Coffee, either black or with heavy cream or melted butter, can take the edge off of hunger until you make it to a place with better food. This works with tea or bouillon, too.

travel keto meals

4. Try fasting

If intermittent fasting is part of your low carb routine, use it strategically to skip meals and make travel simpler. Perhaps you rush to your early morning flight and wait to eat until lunch. Or, eat a hearty low carb breakfast before leaving home and don’t eat again until dinner at your destination. One nice thing about fasting is that you can do it anywhere.

Look here for more on why intermittent fasting can complement LCHF.

5. Master restaurant dining

Eating out with confidence is a key part of success when traveling. Common sense should rule – say no to bread, ask for double veggies instead of the starch with your main course, and choose olive oil and vinegar for your salad. Ask for butter to melt on your cooked vegetables and protein. Skip dessert, or choose a cheese plate or berries with heavy cream.

Drink mostly water – champagne, dry wine, light beer, and straight spirits are okay in moderation. (Our guide to low carb alcohol is worth consulting.)

For more expert tips to help you enjoy low carb meals at restaurants, check out our dining out guide .

6. Commit to success

No excuses. Traveling is not a reason to cheat on your low carb lifestyle. Make health your priority and decide to make low carb work before you leave for your journey.

Keto on the Road: 9 Keto Road Trip Meal Suggestions

keto road trip meal, keto on the road, keto travel snacks, keto diet

If you are a complete travel aficionado who also likes to stay in shape by following a keto-friendly diet, then you have come to the right place.

Today we are going to share some tips on how to maintain a low-carb and high-protein diet even while traveling . As hard as this may sound, packing keto travel snacks and preparing keto road trip meals just takes a little planning.

keto road trip meal, keto on the road, restaurant food, woman eating

Keto on the Road

Planning in advance.

Preparing beforehand can have a big role to play in regulating your daily food intake even while traveling.  For doing this, you will have to conduct thorough research of the available food options at the place you are traveling to such as coffee shops, restaurants, diners, and grocery stores.

Your vacation is bound to become a lot less stressful, and you can also stick to your diet plan if you possess prior knowledge.  It is also advisable to reserve restaurants in advance after taking a look at their online menu.

You can even call up the restaurants beforehand and ask about customized meal plans so that you can have a taste of the local cuisine while maintaining your keto diet.

Keto Travel Snacks

You can buy keto travel snacks at gas stations. Yes, you heard that right!  Gas Stations are filled with lots of keto-diet-approved snacks like the staple pork rinds and keto-friendly nuts .

You can also opt for viable meal options which are not centered around high-carb foods from small convenience stores that have cold food storage sections. They often carry  hard-boiled eggs, salami, and cheese sticks.

Mastering The Art Of Restaurant Dining

Being confident while eating out can be your key to attaining success with a keto road trip meal plan. You’re bound to eat at restaurants while traveling, so learning how to order in keeping with the keto diet is an important skill to master.

When ordering your meals, simply saying no to bread and asking for green veggies will go a long way in helping you keep to your keto-on-the-go goals. And don’t forget that vinegar and olive oil serve as excellent salad dressing options.

Once you are done with the meal, you can skip the regular desserts and opt for berries with heavy cream or a cheese plate.

Keto Road Trip Meal Options

You can easily find keto-friendly salads on the go such as tuna salads, chicken salad, or just a bowl filled with greens and topped with nuts, avocado, and cheese.

Hard-boiled eggs are readily available at convenience stores, supermarkets, and cafes. For adding to the delicious quotient of your meal, you can opt for carb and sugar-free ready-made egg mayo from the supermarkets.

Strawberries

Keto diet might limit your fruit intake to just strawberries but you can enjoy a bountiful amount of berries on a daily basis.  People having access to a fridge on road trips can even carry a carton of cream for enjoying a delectable travel sweet treat.

Slice up an avocado in half or mix some chopped cucumbers, peppers, and other veggies along with sour cream, mayo, or any low carb sauce for enjoying nourishing goodness on the go.

Take your pick amongst a variety of cheese options or low-carb yogurt of natural, plain, or Greek variety that can be sweetened with a handful of berries.

Carry your homemade chocolate cookies, almond butter cookies, or no-bake peanut butter cookies as healthy and tasty keto travel snacks.

Protein Shake

Low carb protein powder and similar keto supplements can be enjoyed on the go by simply adding milk or water. These can cater to your protein macros in a brilliant manner.

Dark Chocolate

Dark Chocolate lovers can rejoice as this savory finds a spot in our list of keto travel snacks. However, you need to restrict yourself to just a row each day and make sure that it has more than 85% cocoa content while being as low carb as possible.

Chia Puddings

Chia pudding serves as a tasty and nutritious snack option that can be added to your keto road trip meal plan provided you have ready access to a fridge.  All you need to do is combine together berries, low-carb yogurt, and chia seeds. This pudding will have to be left in the fridge for about 24 hours before serving as the perfect mealtime snack.

Making Good Use Of The Hotel Kitchenette

Health-conscious millennials are now staying at hotels with a kitchenette so that they can prepare their own meals even on vacation.  This also makes it easier to stick to the ketogenic diet as you don’t have to deal with the constant temptations of restaurant food.

However, you need to know beforehand whether you are getting a complete kitchen or just a microwave and refrigerator for food heating and storage.

While visiting large cities, you can also search for apartments that can be availed easily at affordable rates.  They are roomier compared to hotel rooms and feature a well-stocked kitchen for preparing your keto-friendly meals.

Home is the best place to eat, right? This is why it is always advisable to embark on your journey only after being completely nourished.

Home-cooked bacon, hard-boiled eggs, reheated egg muffins, plain Greek yogurt with berries, cream, and nuts can serve as a filling breakfast option on the day of your trip.

You can even gobble down a sausage sauteed with tomatoes and mushrooms or a slice of avocado coated with mayonnaise or olive oil.

Just remember, you don’t have to leave your keto diet at the door. You can take it with you by knowing how to prepare and pack keto travel snacks, order keto-friendly meals at restaurants, and making use of kitchenettes to meet your keto road trip meal plan.

Here’s a familiar scenario. Your vacation is fast approaching, and you can’t wait to unwind. But one thought keeps nagging you...

How will I stay Keto while traveling?

Talk about a source of anxiety! You want to relax on vacay, not worry how you’ll find low-carb foods. Ugh.

Take a deep breath. It’s going to be okay. With a little planning, most locations can easily become Keto-friendly locations. And with your dietary situation handled, you can kick back, relax, and enjoy life.

Let’s learn how to Keto-proof your next trip.

Keto Travel Tip #1: Plan ahead

Don’t wait until landing to scope out your Keto options. You don’t want to be the person furiously Googling with one bar of service while you navigate cliffside roads en route to your hotel. That won’t end well.

Instead, do the preliminary leg work from the comfort of your living room. With a WiFi connection and an open spreadsheet, you can whip up a solid plan in thirty minutes.

Here’s a list of research to-dos:

  • Find a full kitchen. If you want to stay Keto on vacation, cooking for yourself is the simplest route. Track down an AirBNB with a full kitchen and good reviews, and lock that baby up.
  • Scope out hotels. For resort and hotel stays, there are some key questions you’ll need answered. Does the room have a fridge? Is it near a grocery store with a decent organic section? Does the establishment offer breakfast with eggs, sausage, and bacon? Call ahead if you can’t find these answers online. It only takes 5 minutes.
  • Survey local restaurants. Scan the region until you find 2-5 highly reviewed restaurants with Keto-approved fare. Steakhouses and seafood spots are almost always good bets, and burger joints, brunch, or all-day-breakfast spots can serve you well too.
  • Locate grocery stores. Save them in your phone so you’re not fiddling with GPS on the way to your inn.

Keto Travel Tip #2: Pack Keto foods

Don’t rely on airline food, vending machines, or the kindness of strangers to sustain you throughout your trip. Bringing low-carb foods on your voyage is like bringing oxygen on a deep-sea dive. It sustains you.

The foods you bring will depend on the nature of your vacation. If you’re traveling by car, you can toss meat, eggs, fish, produce, and several meals in a cooler and hit the road.

The cooler strategy won’t work for air travel. (Unless you like donating food to the airport security staff). You can, however, bring one or two pre-made meals. Just be mindful of flying with liquids, and make sure your container is airtight, or your luggage will smell like salmon for months. On the plus side, you might get a full row to yourself on the airplane.

Along with a meal or two, it’s always a good idea to bring sealed Keto snacks along like:

  • Almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, walnuts, and other nuts (Pro tip: steer clear of airline nuts, which are often roasted in vegetable oils and may even contain sugary seasonings)
  • Nut butter packets
  • Low-carb crackers
  • Keto cookies
  • Jerky or pepperoni sticks

To recap: One or two premade meals and a backpack of Keto treats should be plenty to tide you over until you find Keto-friendly food sources at your final destination.

Keto Travel Tip #3: Go grocery shopping

After your plane lands and you secure transportation, you have two primary objectives:

  • Check in to your accommodations
  • Stock up on groceries

If the grocery store is on the way, stop there first. Then you can unpack clothes and groceries in one go.

Needless to say, the supermarket is your best friend on Keto vacation. Vegetables, meat, fish, and healthy fats—it’s all there. It’s a low-carb wonderland.

Ideally, you’re staying somewhere with a full kitchen. But even a microwave and mini-fridge will suffice for basic food storage and preparation.

Finally, if the location allows for it, consider having your groceries delivered. The savings of time and hassle are worth the extra fee.

Keto Travel Tip #4: Tell the server you’re Keto

Dining out on vacation can be a highly enjoyable experience. Sampling the local cuisine sure beats doing the dishes.

But as you scrutinize the menu, you might feel anxious thoughts coming on.

Uhh... this isn’t the menu I saw online. Can this place accommodate my Keto diet?

Fortunately, Keto is a big deal these days. Everyone’s heard of it, and many restaurants cater to the Keto crowd specifically.

When your server comes around, casually mention you’re on a Keto diet. They’ll probably be able to steer you towards the right dishes.

Don’t be shy about it. You’re not the first customer who’s asked for Keto accommodations at this joint, and you won’t be the last. The worst that can happen is an eye roll, and that will have less to do with you and more to do with the cheap tippers who preceded you.

travel keto meals

Keto Travel Tip #5: Exercise

Eating a Ketogenic diet isn’t the only way to burn fat and make ketones. Exercise does it too.

There’s even a term for it: Post-exercise ketosis. This post-exercise ketosis, as you might expect, is enhanced by low-carb dieting[ * ].

Unfortunately, exercise routines often crumble on vacation. You’re out of your normal groove, thousands of miles from your home gym. Chilling on the beach all day is the plan. That’s it.

There’s nothing wrong with that. But you’ll probably feel better (in more ways than one) if you squeeze in a morning beach run. And it will help you stay Keto too.

Keto Travel Tip #6: Fast Intermittently

Intermittent fasting works well with the keto diet. If you’ve been Keto for over a month, you’re probably fat-adapted. When you can access body fat for energy, it makes fasting easier.

This comes in handy for travel. Let’s say you have an 8 AM flight that lands at your destination at 11:15 AM. (Same time zone). You expect to arrive at your AirBNB, grocery bags and all, by 12:30 PM.

If you’re comfortable with a bit of fasting, prepping for your trip will be a snap. You can roll out of bed, grab your pre-packed luggage, zip to the airport, hop on the plane, and drive to your destination...all without worrying about feeding yourself. It’s a huge time saver.

Be a Keto Travel Pro

With the right system, staying Keto on vacation isn’t hard. Plan ahead, find a place with a kitchen, stock up on groceries, and keep up your exercise routine. You’ll do fine.

One last travel tip? Keep yourself motivated with the Carb Manager app.

Tip:  If you are pressed for time, you can use an air fryer to cook a nice grass-fed steak in under 15 minutes.

Pack Low Carb, High Fat Snacks

Most rest areas, gas stations, and airplane snack options are typically carbohydrate-laden and should be avoided at all costs.

Here are a few great Ketogenic snacks you can bring with you on the go:

  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Cooked bacon
  • Parmesan cheese crisps
  • Nuts (macadamia nuts, walnuts, and almonds)
  • Nut butters
  • Dark chocolate (85% cacao or higher)
  • Beef jerky (check the sugar content first)

Utilize Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting will make staying in ketosis a breeze while you’re traveling. Instead of having to spend time finding low carb meals throughout your vacation or business trip, consider just having two big meals.

travel keto meals

If you have an early morning flight, eat a protein and fat-filled breakfast like eggs and bacon, then consider fasting until dinner time (or when you arrive at your destination).

Not only will you experience deeper levels of ketosis with fasting, but it also helps you cut out all of the junk food and snacks that are often handed out on flights or at hotels.

Check Out The Restaurant Menu Before Going Out

Most restaurants have their menu online. You can look at the menus of several places to eat in the area and choose the place that offers Ketogenic-friendly meal options.

And with a little creativity, you should be able to eat a healthy low carb, high fat meal no matter where you decide to eat.

Here are a few tips for eating Keto at restaurants:

  • Always ask to double up on non-starchy vegetables instead of having bread or a starch
  • Most restaurants have steak or salad, which are both great Keto meals
  • Use olive oil and vinegar as dressing
  • Ask for butter to place onto your vegetables
  • Drink water instead of soda
  • Skip dessert
  • If you want a burger, ask the server to have it lettuce wrapped instead of in a bun

Visit the Local Grocery Store

More likely than not, there will be several grocery stores within a few miles of where you’re staying. Browse the internet for any “health food stores” in the area, as they are most likely to carry Ketogenic-friendly snacks and meals.

It’s also a great idea to stock up on low carb, high-fat snacks to put in the fridge at your hotel. Fresh meat such as rotisserie chicken can help you stay Keto while you’re on vacation.

Here are a few other options you can get at the food store during your trip:

  • Egg, chicken, or tuna salad
  • Chicken wings
  • Salad (don’t mix dressing until ready to eat)
  • Full-fat yogurt

Drink Keto Coffee to Prevent Hunger

travel keto meals

Bringing MCT oil or coconut oil with you and making Keto Coffee is a great travel hack. If you don't have either of these available, even regular butter will do the trick. By adding healthy fats into your coffee, you’ll stay satiated for longer periods of time, improve your ketone production, and it’ll make it easier for you to hit your daily healthy fat intake.

If you can’t find any low-carb alternatives at the place you’re staying, a quick Keto coffee followed by a healthy protein source can help you stay in ketosis and keep carb cravings at bay.

Use These Tips to Maintain Ketosis Even While You Travel

For many people, traveling often leads to cheating on their Ketogenic diet. With increased exposure to carbohydrates and difficulty finding low-carb, high-fat alternatives, it may seem like too much of a hassle to stick to your Ketogenic efforts.

But by preparing for your vacation or business trip by following the tips laid out above, traveling while eating Keto will be much easier than you think!

All of the best tips to stay keto while traveling! If you are on a keto diet or are thinking about starting one, you have likely had the thought about how hard it could be to stick to such a rigorous diet while you are taking a road trip or going on a vacation.

While the ketogenic diet can take some imagination and a bit of planning, we will show you how to utilize grocery stores, gas stations, packable keto snacks and some special requests at restaurants to stay in ketosis.

A high-fat diet is possible while traveling on long flights of air travel, road trips, hotel room stays when a long way from home. Below are some of the top tips for sticking to a low carb diet and enjoying yourself on vacation.

Is It Possible To Eat Keto While Traveling or On Vacation?

It is absolutely possible to eat keto while traveling or on vacation. The most important thing to remember about a keto diet is that it is high in fats and proteins and very low in carbohydrates. So, the best way to maintain your keto diet while out of your usual routine is to make sure to avoid carbs. But, how do you stay true to the keto way when we live in a world of high carbs?

Since you are doing your research on keeping up keto while traveling, you are probably already pretty vigilant about your carb intake, but it is even more important on vacation as you can be tempted by restaurants or fast food. Below we will cover some essential tips to maintain your keto diet on your travels.

How To Eat Keto On Vacation or on Road Trips

Keto travel tip 1 – pack keto friendly food .

The best way to keep up your keto diet while traveling is to have several snacks throughout the day, as you would normally do at home. This keeps your hunger down and leaves you less likely to want to cheat if you have some delicious keto snacks. Packing keto-friendly snacks also takes the guesswork out of what you can and can’t eat while in the car, exploring your vacation destination, or just hanging out on the beach somewhere.

If you pack keto foods to keep you nourished throughout your day, you won’t have to worry about going to a local grocery store while you’re trying to enjoy yourself, and you won’t get so hungry while skipping snacks or meals that you ruin your own vacation. The keto foods you purchase or prepare ahead of time will keep your energy up and help to keep you burning fats while you relax. Here are some ideas that won’t take a lot of work.

Keto Travel Tip 2 – Great Keto Travel Snack Ideas

  • Veggie Sticks
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Cheese Sticks
  • Peanut Butter
  • Jerky Sticks
  • Egg muffins

Keto Travel Tip 3 – The Best Keto Snacks To Find at Convenience Stores

When on road trips, stopping at a convenience store for gas and restroom break is almost always inevitable. There are way too many opportunities to grab a sweet treat or other junk food full of carbs that would ruin ketosis for you.

Rather, seek out the great options of keto-friendly foods like these with a little planning. Some of the best keto foods can surprisingly be found at stores not even considered a health food store. It’s possible to find foods with healthy fats without added sugars!

Keto Travel Snacks

  • Macadamia nuts is a good choice

Keto Travel Tip 4 – Ordering Keto in Restaurants

First, check the menu for keto-friendly meals, or they may be labeled low-carb options. The keto lifestyle is pretty popular right now, so it’s possible they already have some keto options such as a lettuce wrapped cheeseburger or lettuce wraps in place of buns and bread.

If they don’t have any good options already on the menu, a good way to create your own keto meal is to request substitutions for the carbs. Simply omitting common side dishes like rice and potatoes could probably easily be replaced with veggies.

Salad bars at restaurants are also an easy way to keep your net carbs down by filling your plate full of fresh veggies. Other ideas could be asking for a cheese plate, tuna salad or chicken salad.

Having a well thought out eating plan ahead of time will help you stick to your keto meal plan.

Is Dirty Keto Okay While Traveling?

Dirty keto is referred to as a keto diet that only focuses on the low carb, high protein, and high-fat portions of the diet without paying any attention to the nutrient and overall essential health aspects of eating a keto diet. Dirty keto is a version of the diet that subsists off of processed and generally nutrient-lacking meals.

Dirty keto may be okay for those who are traveling and don’t have the means of accessing food of their usual standards and nutritional quality, but dirty keto should not be implemented in the long term, as it has potential health risks .

Is It Unhealthy to Go In and Out of Ketosis When Traveling?

Going in and out of ketosis is a fairly new aspect of the diet known as “ keto-cycling ”. This means your body will be in ketosis, and you’ll follow the keto diet for a certain period of time, and then for a shorter period, you will introduce healthy carbs and other nutrients.

There is not a lot of information or research is done to discuss the risks or benefits of this style of keto diet, so it should be done with caution, as all keto diets should be done.

Keto itself is great for weight loss and even situations such as epilepsy, but should be done under the supervision of a dietician or a doctor, as you have to go through an adjustment period for your body to begin burning fat for fuel and it must be done in a healthy way to avoid any damage to muscles such as the heart.

Some benefits discussed for keto cycling, state that this version of the diet may actually help to increase muscle growth while burning off fat, and may be a better option for sticking to the keto diet in the long term.

What Happens If I Stop Eating Keto on Vacation?

If you stop eating keto while you are on vacation, it’s not the end of the world. You shouldn’t beat yourself up about it but you should think and create a plan of action for getting back on the diet and the consequences that come with that.

The “ keto-flu ” is the transition period that your body must go through until it begins to burn fat for energy. So, this is something to consider if you plan to be off of the diet for more than a few days.

You can stay keto while traveling!

As long as you are prepared with a smart meal plan and healthy keto options, you can avoid the temptations of restaurant foods or sweets that would take you out of ketosis.

It is also important to remember that if you do have a cheat day or two, just create a plan to get back on the diet. Your best bet would be to continue to eat a healthy whole foods diet that allows you to burn fat while staying healthy.

So, you see even without preparing your own meals, but packing keto travel snacks and with a little planning, it will be possible to stay in ketosis while traveling. Don’t worry about your next trip with these tips and tricks!

Keto On a Plane – Travel Essential Series

Travelling on a plane can be a stressful experience. Making sure you are on time for check-in, dealing with luggage restrictions and not to mention the anxiety about actually flying. Sticking to keto on a plane is definitely achievable with a little bit of preparation and flexibility.

Planning a trip? Not sure how you are going to maintain keto on a plane? This guide will help you feel keto confident when you board your flight.

If you are travelling by plane when following a ketogenic diet that can add another level of stress. So it can really help to be prepared, especially for long-haul flights. You may be starting to notice a bit of a theme here, when you make keto your new way of life, you have to be prepared to be prepared.

It just takes a little bit of forward planning and you will be able to easily travel whilst still living your keto lifestyle. We have some staples that always come with us when travelling.

Tips for keto on a plane

  • Snacks – Packing some of your favourite keto snacks can be a lifesaver when flying. Flying can be stressful at times and you may find yourself looking for something to eat and not finding any keto-friendly options. We would always have some dark chocolate , coconut butter , nuts, pork rinds and Essentially Keto chew the fat bars in our carry on bag for emergencies.
  • Tea – We always travel with an assortment of tea bags. We would pack a couple in our carry on luggage in case we want a tea prior to boarding or if we want a different tea than the ones available on the flight. There is also a selection of different teas in a snap lock bag in our checked luggage.
  • Coffee – This would depend on whether we are travelling domestically or internationally. Erika is a little precious when it comes to her coffee and we find it difficult to get a takeaway coffee in Australia made with cream. So when we travel domestically, Erika would take some of her cold brew coffee  in a tightly sealed jar and purchase some cream at our destination. We also take our Perfect Keto MCT powder so Erika can still make her BPC and Dan can add some to her tea.
  • Water bottles – It’s really important to stay hydrated when flying, especially on long haul flights. We always carry our Swell water bottles with us. If we are travelling internationally we would have them empty to go through security and then buy some water in the terminal and fill them up. Our water bottles are insulated and keep the water nice and cold. We have found when travelling internationally we can ask the cabin crew to fill our water bottles up when they come around with water.

Planning a trip? Not sure how you are going to maintain low carb keto whilst flying? Airports and Aeroplanes are not the best places to find low carb options. This guide will help you feel keto confident when you board your flight.

Travelling with Liquids

Australian domestic flights.

In Australia there are no restrictions on how much liquid or gel you can carry on board domestic flights. Some airlines do have restrictions around bringing hot beverages on board though. We fly domestically in Australia a lot as our families live interstate. We LOVE that we can take our cold brew coffee and water through security without any problems.

International & US domestic flights

Liquids and gels are limited to 100ml (3.4 oz) bottles which can fit inside a small resealable plastic zip lock bag. When travelling internationally we empty our water bottles and make sure we don’t take any other liquids over 100ml in our carry on. Another tip if you travel a lot is to keep your liquids that you have in your handbag all the time in a zip lock bag. Erika does this and she can just easily grab that bag out and put it in the tray and there is no panic at security about what she has in her handbag.

Planning a trip? Not sure how you are going to maintain low carb keto whilst flying? Airports and Aeroplanes are not the best places to find low carb options. This guide will help you feel keto confident when you board your flight.

Purchasing food at the airport

This will be very dependant on the airport and the amount of time you have prior to your flight. Some of the best options to look out for are:

  • Mexican – Burrito bowls are available at most fast food Mexican places now, just remember to ask for no beans or rice.
  • Pub/Bistro – We have found a few airports now have a pub serving pub food which may include steak and salad, bunless burgers and other salads.
  • Kebabs – Most kebab places will make up a kebab on a plate for you (meat and salad). Add cheese and sour cream to increase the fat.
  • Nandos and Oporto – Both of these places will do flame grilled chicken and salad. Nandos sauces have much less carbs than Oporto.
  • Burger places (McDonalds, Hungry Jacks) – For us these places would be a last resort, but you can always order a burger without the bun, or simply remove the bun. Also watch out for the carbs in any sauces.

Planning a trip? Not sure how you are going to maintain keto on a plane? This guide will help you feel keto confident when you board your flight.

Ordering meals

When doing a long haul flight you will usually have meals supplied. What is on offer is heavily dependant on your class of travel and the airline you are flying with. When you book your flight you will have an option to choose a speciality menu.

Most airlines will have a variety of options including vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, diabetic, Hindu, Kosher and Halal. Some keto people will choose the gluten free or diabetic option. Our advice would be to just receive the normal menu. The problem with the speciality menus is you get no choice and given that there is yet to be a low carb option on the speciality menu, all the other options still present some issues.

What do we do when flying on long haul flights?

  • As mentioned we would order from the main menu. We have usually been able to find an option that we can make keto-friendly.
  • Breakfast would usually have an option of egg, sausage and/or bacon. We would choose this option and not eat any bread or ask them to not give us the pastry. Also, we would skip the offering of yoghurt (usually sweetened).
  • For the dinner option we would usually choose the chicken, beef or pork option and just not eat any of the starchy vegetables/pasta/rice. Again, we would ask that they don’t give us the dessert. If we feel like something sweet after dinner we always have some dark chocolate in the carry on and we would just have some of that.
  • We would use the butter you get for the bread/pastry to increase the fat. Add that butter to your eggs and meat to add some fat and usually some flavour.
  • We try to eat a big keto meal before we go. If we are flying out early we would order a big keto breakfast at the airport prior to boarding. If our flight is a late night flight, we would have a big satisfying dinner at home before we leave to keep us full for as long as possible. Also, if the food on board is not ideal and we need to avoid items it is not such a big deal.

Another popular option within the keto community is to just not eat at all. Whilst this works for some people it won’t work for others. Travelling can be stressful and attempting to fast during this time can lead to failure and bad choices.

Our suggestion if you were planning on fasting during your flight would be to have a back up plan. If things don’t go smoothly, if you get delayed, what are you going to do? Take some of your keto friendly snacks as a back up plan.

If you are planning on fasting it’s going to be extremely important to get your electrolytes right. We are not experts on electrolytes so check this out for more information . Make sure you stay well hydrated as well. Flying under a pressurised cabin can make you dehydrated, so increase your fluid intake.

Quarantine laws are going to vary greatly depending on where you are travelling to. Even domestic travel in Australia has quarantine laws around bringing fresh food between states. If you are planning on taking fresh food onto the flight with you, either consume it all on the flight or make your self aware of the quarantine laws at your destination.

We have seen families having to throw out a lot of food that they took with them to consume on board. Just be aware of these laws when travelling. It will make your life easier and possibly save you wasting money and food.

When flying we do our keto best. We use the above tips and advice to stay as keto as we can, but we also don’t sweat the small stuff. Travelling with Dan is already stressful enough (did I mention worrywart?),  so if a sauce on an inflight meal has some carbs, we don’t let it worry us and we just move on.

Have you done keto on a plane? What do you do to stay in ketosis when travelling? What are your favourite go to meals when flying? Let us know in the comments.

Hi Jennifer. We used to love in Melbourne. We have a blog post that is about eating keto in Melbourne. https://havebutterwilltravel.com/5-keto-must-eats-in-melbourne-australia/

Also, we are in Melbourne visiting some friends this weekend and we will be filming a melbourne keto video. I think it will be out next Sunday. I am not sure of any places in Geelong, but there is usually a keto option on most menus. If you are around for a few weeks, you might also want to place an order with low carb emporium. They are an awesome low carb online store. If you use them, use our code HAVEBUTTER5 for a 5% discount. If you are after any more advice, send us an email and ask any questions. [email protected]

Although I have traveled from the center of the USA to Sydney about eight times in the past, this is the first time I will have done so while keto. My instincts seem to align with your advice, which is reassuring. So many other blogs advise taking a ton of keto friendly food and simply eating that instead of the in flight meal, but the pitfalls that come with this option never seem to be addressed. Thank you!

August 20, 2018 at 5:39 am

Thanks for your comment Jennie, glad we were able to reassure you. Best of luck with your travelling and let us know how you go. Enjoy Sydney!

How to Eat Keto on Vacation – Easy Meal Plan

I’m excited to introduce a new guest writer to Life’s Carousel. Penny from Remake My Plate is a true Keto expert.

Not only is she a registered dietitian with a degree in nutrition, but she also has a very personal experience with weight loss and diet. Penny has lost over 120 lbs!

Penny’s dietitian super-power is understanding that most people already know what they should and shouldn’t eat, the problem is that people don’t know how to make the changes they need to. She helps people make changes to their lifestyle!

If you want to learn more about the Ketogenic Diet then please check out my post: Ketogenic Diet for Beginners

One of the issues that many of us face is how to stick to a healthy eating lifestyle when we are on vacation.

Penny recently went on vacation and she shares with us the exact meal plan she used to stay on keto on vacation!

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail” – Benjamin Franklin

Recently, my husband and I went on vacation. With no access to a refrigerator and no way to cook a meal, eating in restaurants every night was our only option.

Normally this means that sticking to any kind of food plan is difficult and I’m pretty much guaranteed to come home weighing 5 pounds or more heavier. But I couldn’t really afford any extra pounds when I would soon be clinging to a sheer cliff as we had plans on going on a rock climbing adventure at Ausable Chasm in New York.

This type of crazy adventure would never have been possible 14 years ago. I was a lot heavier then but lost 120 lbs. Since then I have followed some version of a low carb/keto diet to help keep the weight off. I have my routine meals that I make when I’m at home. But eating away from home can be a challenge.

I don’t know about you but for me eating on vacation means trying to find something that will be suitable at restaurants, fast food joints or where ever else we might stop to eat. I usually just did the best I could but often found myself eating way off plan.

Table of Contents

Falling Off the Keto Wagon

One or two days off plan usually just led to more days which led to regaining weight. I can tell you that I’ve taken a handful of trips and returned home 5 or more pounds heavier and then had to struggle to get back on track. Yikes!

If you’ve been following a keto diet then you know that it takes a bit of time to get into ketosis . Ketosis is the state in which your body uses ketones, which are created during the breakdown of fats in the liver, as a fuel source to give you energy. If you eat carbs then your body will use glucose that comes from the carbs as the main source of fuel.

Getting into ketosis doesn’t happen overnight. It usually takes a few days to kick in and can even take weeks for your body to become fully adapted to using ketones for energy.

Because of this, having a “cheat day” where you eat lots of things containing carbs will kick you out of ketosis. Then it’s back to the beginning again .

Once in ketosis , I’ve found it’s just much easier to stay there rather than yo-yoing in and out of it. Planning my meals and keeping ingredients for my favorite meals on hand helps me stay in ketosis.

Eating Keto on Vacation

Which brings me back to the question of what in the world can I eat while on vacation?

Success loves preparation. Since I wanted to succeed then I had to start planning some quick, easy meals that required no cooking or heating.

While on vacation I had access to a cooler and we could pick up ice to keep things cold so that would help. With a bit of creative planning I came up with the following meal plan for our trip.

If you are tracking your macronutrients (fat, protein, carb, and fiber) I have included some basic information for you found at the very end. Always check the stats and the serving sizes of the products that you use and keep in mind that not everyone will have the same macronutrient goals.
  • Bottled water
  • No-calorie drinks+

We brought a case of bottled water with us and a few of our favorite no calorie drinks.

Condiments/Salad Dressing:

  • Salad dressing

If you enjoy using particular condiments with wraps or dressing with your salad (which made up some of my meal plan) then pack a small container.

In our case , I brought a small plastic container with mustard and mayo as well as a small bottle of our favorite salad dressing.

We also brought along some salt and pepper because we enjoy it on our eggs. Check your local grocery store spice isle for a set of cheap salt and pepper shakers. I found a set there for about a dollar.

Breakfast items:

  • Cooked breakfast sausage
  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Low-carb tortillas

I found burrito sized lower carb tortillas at my local grocery store. They were big enough to make a large burrito. It also made a good sized meal even when split in half.

We planned to eat the sausage and eggs for breakfast. On one day I also used some of the low carb tortilla rolls to make breakfast roll ups.

Got a favorite breakfast roll up ingredient? Why not pack it for your trip.

For our next trip we are going to include a small jar of salsa to use in our breakfast roll ups.

Lunch items:

  • Cooked, shredded chicken
  • Cooked steak, onions and peppers
  • Sliced cheese
  • Cheese roll-ups

The cheese rollups are made by taking our favorite sandwich meat and rolling it around a cheese stick. For our trip I used mozzarella, cheddar and pepperjack cheese sticks.

The sandwich meat included turkey breast, ham and a delicious rosemary ham that I found at the deli counter. They make a great grab and go snack or can be used as part of a heartier meal.

Our planned lunches included low carb burritos filled with a mixture of shredded meat (chicken or steak), cheese, avocado and salad greens topped with dressing or mustard. We also made burritos filled with avocado, several cheese rollups, salad greens and mayo/mustard.

  • Prebagged salad mixes
  • Hard-boiled eggs

The original plan was to make a big loaded salad to eat for dinner each night. But it takes a lot of cooler space to pack individual salad items.

We bring our scooters with us so we can travel around to see the sights while on vacation. The small cooler we strap on the back doesn’t hold a whole lot. Packing on those ingredients would have been impossible.

But then I had a great idea for a quick and easy meal. Before we set out on our adventure we cut the top of the salad bag open, added our extra salad fixings (shredded chicken, steak, cheese, avocado, diced egg, etc), packed the salad dressing and forks then we were on our way!

These ‘salad on the go’ were great! No plates to pack. No extra ingredients to take up cooler space. Super easy to clean up after eating. When you’re done you just toss the bags.

A quick word on the bagged salad mixes…

My husband loves the bagged salad blends from Fresh Express. They include chopped cabbage which gives it a great crunch. These salads contain a blend of greens plus a packet that contains dressing and some other ingredients.

Not all the extra ingredients are keto friendly. Some of the dressing mixes are high in carbs as well as some of the extra ingredients such as tortilla strips and croutons. Depending upon how many carbs you eat in a day you may want to avoid those mixes, or at least remove some of the ingredients, and stick with the mixes that only contain salad greens.

  • Cheese slices
  • Hummus and carrots ( please note: these are higher in carb items and not typically eaten by those on a keto diet. Occasionally I enjoy having them but I am aware that I can eat a higher amount of carbohydrates and not get kicked out of ketosis. Your mileage my vary on this item ).

In the end , we found the meals to be filling enough that we didn’t really snack on anything except for a handful of almonds here and there.

The Verdict?

And how did the meal plan work out?

Except for one meal out at a steakhouse, my husband and I ate all our meals from the food we brought. The food was tasty and we didn’t spend a small fortune on purchasing meals out.

There was enough variety to not be bored. The meals were able to be easily packed into the cooler for traveling.

The best part of all, unlike other vacations away, I returned weighing exactly what I did when I left. That’s a win in my books!

Below you will find some of the nutritional information for what we ate. Of course, depending upon what you use, this might not be exact.

Dry roasted almonds (22 nuts/1 ounce K=169, F=14.9gm, P=6.2gm, C=5.4gm, FB=3.3gm

An average day:

  • ½ breakfast burrito with 2 sausage/2 eggs,
  • whole lunch burrito with chicken, feta cheese, ½ an avocado, bit of salad greens and some dressing
  • ½ a bagged salad with steak, onions, peppers, hard boiled egg, cheese and ½ an avocado

This came in around 1,700 calories, 102 grams of fat and 40 net grams of carbs. As I aim for 50 net grams of carbs and under this worked for me.

Looking to cut more carbs out? Simply eat the breakfast and lunch items without the low carb burrito to reduce the carb count to 25 net grams.

How to Stay Low-Carb and Keto When You Travel

Quick Summary tl;dr

Whilst traveling can seem a little daunting to try and maintain your ketogenic way of eating, it need not be impossible and should not be a barrier to why you can’t or shouldn’t travel.

The most important thing is to make sure that you have pre-planned accordingly before you set off anywhere. If you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail.

Always remember to factor in the after part of traveling as well to ensure all your efforts are maintained.

For more tips on staying keto while eating out, check out our Guide to Dining Out on a Low-Carb and Keto Diet!

Before You Travel

Pre-planning, during your travels, 1. traveling by air, meat roll-ups, cheese sticks, dried meat snack, nuts and seeds, vegetable crudités, dark chocolate, vacuum-packed olives, dried coconut flakes or flaked almonds, coffee and cream, low-carb or ketogenic snack bar, 2. traveling by rail, greek/natural yoghurt, crackers and dips, nut butter snack-packs, snack pots of berries, smoothies & shakes, canned fish, 3. traveling by road, boiled eggs, egg muffins, sandwiches & wraps, keto bread & more, keto sweet treats, after you travel, fasting as a tool for traveling, exogenous ketones.

The majority of the food options available in airports, service (gas) stations or on the road, are often high in refined carbs and sugar, making sticking with a ketogenic lifestyle feel that more difficult.

Having spent around 9 months myself travelling around the world by air, rail, car and boat, it meant I had to get creative on how to maintain a low carbohydrate lifestyle on the go.

Below are some of my own tried and tested tips and ideas of what you can do before, during and after you travel to help you maintain your ketogenic way of eating.

How to Stay Low-Carb and Keto When You Travel

Planning out your meals is not only a good tool to use in your day-to-day life, but can also take a lot of the stress out of travelling as well. The first part to plan out is the meal that you are going to have before you set off on your travels.

Having a well formulated low carbohydrate meal before you travel, will ensure you keep any hunger or cravings away; this is especially helpful if you are going to be on a long journey and aren’t necessarily used to or like to fast (more on this a little later).

Secondly, make sure you have been consistent with your ketogenic lifestyle before you travel. This not only means your food intake, but also your fluid intake, stress levels and sleep patterns. If you are off on any of these then it can make travelling a little more stressful and cause issues around cravings.

The final part to planning is looking at what foods you can take with you. For some people there may be some logistics involved in what you can and cannot take depending on what mode of transport you are using and for how long you will be traveling.

The key to maintaining your ketogenic diet whilst you are traveling will be in the types of foods that you pack. Sometimes though, taking any food with you may not be an option. The below lists will cover foods/snacks that you can make and ones that you can always pick up on the go, depending on what mode of transport you are using

How to Stay Low-Carb and Keto When You Travel

For many people, flying is probably one of the harder ways to travel and maintain this form of lifestyle. Most countries have certain restrictions on what you can and cannot take through security, particularly around fluid options.

Likewise, baggage restrictions can also make it a little more difficult to take certain food items with you. Below are my tried and tested, go-to foods for when you are traveling by air.

This can be any form of cold meat such as ham, Parma ham, salami, turkey meat etc. topped with 1-2 slices of cheese (depending on how large the meat is!).

You can either roll as is or you can add a couple of slices of tomato, cucumber or lettuce. In my experience, the less amount of ingredients the easier it is to eat. Once rolled, wrapped them in some foil or cling film as this will save space in your hand-luggage — just be sure to keep it somewhere they won’t get too squashed.

Take 1-2 snack size pieces of cheese pre-bought or cut cheese from home before leaving (around 30 grams in weight). Again, this is a snack that you can pre-pack but many airport shops actually sell cheese sticks (brands such as Cathedral, Babybel etc.) now so you can pick them up on the go.

Biltong, salami sticks, kabanas sausages and even pork rinds. Again, this is a snack that you can easily buy before you travel and carry with you without the need for refrigeration. This is also a snack option that is becoming more common in certain shops within some airports. You can even make your own meaty snacks:

  • The Best Homemade Beef Jerky (classic beef jerky)
  • Soft & Tender Beef Jerky
  • Millionaire's Bacon
  • Crispy Chicken Cracklings

Nuts and seeds including almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, pili nuts, macadamia nuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds. ( Here's a complete guide to nuts & seeds, including carb counts and nutritional information per serving.) These are perhaps one of the saviours of travel foods. Try where possible to still always choose options that are low carb friendly by being plain, roasted or salted i.e. no other coatings or flavourings.

Whilst some airports do provide plain or salted nuts, a lot of the options do have coasting or added sugars on them, or only offer peanuts as the nut option. These two recipes are great nut options that you can make at home and then easily transport with you. You can make your flavored nuts or seeds:

  • Keto Savory Spiced Pecans
  • Low-Carb BBQ Roasted Almonds
  • Healthy Chile-Lime Spiced Almonds
  • Activated Almonds with Rosemary & Paprika Salt
  • Sweet and Savory Roasted Pepitas
  • Healthy Roasted Thyme Sunflower Seeds

Cucumber, celery, peppers or carrots. Cutting up some vegetables into batons can make a nice snack to take with you. Be advised though that due to them being classed as liquid options, things such as dips or nut butters would not be allowed through airport security

Have 2-3 squares of chocolate above 70% cocoa (ideally 85-90%, the darker the better). Whilst this by no means will constitute a full snack, having a sweet option to hand can help especially if there are any travel delays or if you are feeling a little tired and think cravings might hit whilst traveling.

You can now buy olives form most food outlets that come in a handy vacuum package. This means they are not only easy to transport, you can also get them through airport security and be sure to have a good, high fat snack with you.

Opt for plain (raw or toasted) options only, and avoid sweetened products. Having a snack along with you that includes coconut means that you will have access to a quick, high-fat energy source on the go.

Always be sure to check the labels on anything that contains coconut as often added sugar ingredients can sneak in. You can even make your own Quick Cereal , Keto Granola or Coconut Chips .

Americano (hot or cold) with added cream (pouring or heavy whipping). There is pretty much a Starbucks or Costa Coffee in every airport in the world now and I have failed to find one yet that can’t do a simple Americano with cream.

If you haven’t managed to pack any snacks or find anything at the airport, then this can act as a great saviour to keep you going until you get to your destination.

Low-carb and keto friendly bars such as Quest, Adapt or Perfect Keto Bars and great for traveling. Not all bars are truly keto so beware of hidden carbs and starches — always check the labels to make sure there are no blood sugar spiking sweeteners such as Sorbitol, Maltitol and IMOs.

How to Stay Low-Carb and Keto When You Travel

Taking the train can free you up a little more with regards to the restrictions around what you can and cannot take with you. Granted there may still be some restrictions on the baggage options which you may have to bear in mind when you are pre-planning. Also, whilst the train station can have some shop bought options, generally the on-board food options to buy are limited so I would try and make sure you pack as many of your own foods as possible for this mode of transport.

All the options contained within the flying mode of transport would also be good to take with you when traveling via rail. Other options include:

Most places you can now buy small or individual yoghurt pots that are great to take with you on the go. Either having them plain or adding a handful of nuts and seeds make for a great snack or light meal. Just be sure to pack your spoon and try and have this close to setting off on your journey if you aren’t able to take a cold lunch bag with you.

Before you travel, make a large pack of crackers to take with you. Pairing them with something simple like a cream or cheese based dip or some guacamole will make for a great light snack that is easy to carry and consume on the train. And let's not forget nori seaweed crisps , another low-carb staple! Here are some links to extremely tasty and easy to make ketogenic crackers and dips.

  • Keto Cheesy Party Crackers
  • Keto Rosemary and Onion Crackers
  • Keto Tortilla Chips
  • Crispy Multiseed Keto Crackers

Almond, walnut or hazelnut butter, plain or mixed with coconut oil are all great low-carb options. The individual sachets of nut butters that you can buy online are also becoming more popular to pick up from your supermarkets and would make a great go-to, high fat snack.

Be sure to select ones that are either plain nuts or mixed with coconut oil and avoid ones that contain chocolate or honey as this will have sugar in them. Serve on its own, with dark chocolate or even fresh celery stalks.

Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or blackberries are all low in carbs. This may be one that you absolutely need to pre-plan. Having a packet of berries with you can work as a good snack on their own, or can be added to something like yoghurt or topped with some nut butter.

If you are struggling a little on luggage space then this may not be the best go to option. However, if you can, packing a homemade smoothie can act as a great meal on the go for when you’re traveling. Here are some great ketogenic and low-carb Smoothies & Shakes . You can even make your own dry keto protein shake mix and add liquids just before serving. Plus it's a great option for traveling by plane!

Salmon, tuna, sardines or mackerel are all healthy and convenient options. Tins of fish can make a great food travel companion as they don’t take up a lot of space and they can last for quite some time! If you are taking this option though, be sure to get one that has an opening mechanism on the top. To read more about the best choices, check out our Complete Guide to Healthy and Sustainable Fish & Seafood.

How to Stay Low-Carb and Keto When You Travel

If you can travel by road, especially that of your own car, then it can make sticking with your ketogenic lifestyle that much easier seeing as you can pack a lot more. Likewise, foods that normally require chilling you can also take with you in a cool bag.

Again, all of the food options listed in the air and rail travel would be ideal for traveling by road as well. Remember though that if you are driving to make sure you are careful and pull over when necessary to eat and drink.

Take 2-3 hard-boiled eggs. These sound simple but they make for a great, high protein snack when you’re on the go. Either have them whole or mix with some homemade mayonnaise . Try and boil these either the night before or in the morning before you travel and be sure to keep in a cool bag

Cut in half, keeping the pit inside and squeeze some lemon or lime over the inside. Put the halves back together to prevent browning. All you need is a spoon and optionally a pinch of salt — a healthy keto snack ready to be served!

Take 2-3 egg muffins. This type of egg-based dish is really easy to pack and means you will have a great and nutritious meal for the journey.

  • Keto Chorizo Egg Muffins
  • Crustless Keto Breakfast Quiche
  • Low-Carb Pesto Egg Muffins
  • Smoked Salmon Keto Mini Quiches

If you have a few minutes for meal prep, pack a healthy lunchbox with you by simply filling it with any of your favourite keto foods. Unwich or ham & veg roll-ups are all great options for keto on the go. Try some of these options:

  • Healthy Keto No-Cook Bento Lunchbox
  • Keto Ranch BLT Lettuce Wrap
  • Italian Sub Keto Roll Ups
  • Low-Carb Turkey & Veg Roll-Ups

If you have more than a few minutes, bake some savory low-carb muffins or keto bread and use it to make low-carb sandwiches. Try some of these options:

  • Keto Savory Zucchini Muffins
  • Keto Cheesy Cauliflower Muffins
  • Low-Carb & Paleo Bread
  • Parmesan & Tomato Keto Bread Buns
  • Fluffy Grain-Free Sunflower Bread

Take 1-2 baked goods with you. Having a sweet treat along with you on your journey really can help you avoid any temptation from gas stations.

For many people, traveling can become a little tiresome and as we know, we don’t always eat for reasons of hunger. Making sure you have access to some sweet treats can help with any type of emotional eating. These recipes are great keto sweet treats that you can make and take with you:

  • Easy Keto Coconut Macaroons
  • Keto Salted Almond & Coconut Bark
  • Healthy Keto Almond Biscotti
  • 5 Ingredient Keto Cookies

Now you have reached your destination and although the hard part is mostly over, how you follow up with your eating once you have been traveling is just as important.

If you have only had some snacks with you when traveling and you aren’t used to fasting, then you may find that your hunger levels are a little higher than normal. Likewise, if you have been traveling and changed time zones, you may find that your internal body clock has gone a little haywire as well.

As soon as you are able to, make it a priority to eat a well-formulated low carbohydrate meal after you have finished your journey. This will of course not only help with any hunger that you may be feeling, it will also get and keep your body clock more in check. As part of your pre-planning, make sure you have checked out some good, go to restaurants of where you are heading to and get to it ASAP once you arrive.

How to Stay Low-Carb and Keto When You Travel

For some people, intermittent fasting may be the better option to try when they are traveling.

Who it is good for:

  • People who are used to more extended periods of fasting (18 hours+) or just fasting in general
  • Those who can’t take or pack any of their own snacks with them

Who is it not good for:

  • People who have never tried any form of fasting before they travel
  • People who can get stressed or are nervous at traveling — fasting can be perceived as a stressor to the body and so could exacerbate this

If you are going to use fasting as a tool for when you are traveling, then it is important to remember these points. If you haven’t been doing so, get your body a little used to the concept of fasting at least a week before you travel. The length or type of fasting to do would depend a lot more on the duration of your travel.

If you are going on a long-haul flight, then trying a bit more of a longer fast (such as a 24hour fast) would be of benefit. If it is a shorter trip, then just following a 16:8 feeding/re-feeding window could be a better option. For a full overview of what different fasting options look like, check out this article on fasting.

The final tool that may be beneficial when traveling is using exogenous ketones. Exogenous ketones are still relatively new to the market and so there hasn’t been an extensive amount of case studies around people using these whilst traveling.

However, the extra ketones may well help keep hunger and particularly cravings that may come around especially if you have a long travel and/or are changing time zones.

Just wondering about the Quest bars suggested. Some of the Quest bars do seem to have sucralose and they have soluble corn fiber.  I know (as this blog generally advocates anyway) that we should stay away from the ones with sucralose. However, I am confused about the corn fiber- I thought corn was off the list for more than just it's carb properties. Or is this an instance like Erythritol and not really a corn product anymore? Same thing with the soluble tapioca fiber in the Perfect Keto bars. Thank you for your help in understanding this! I am in maintenance if it matters. I went from 220lbs (Nov '17) to 139lbs (June '18) solely following this blog.

That is amazing Crystal!! What an amazing transformation! I'm so happy for you! Quest bars are not my personal favourite because most of the flavours I've seen include Sucralose.  Also, they often cause bloating. Having said that, it can be an option if you travel and can't have a proper meal. The "old" Quest bars used to have IMOs and the net carbs were much higher than labeled but IMOs have been replaced with Erythritol and stevia in the newer version. When it comes to soluble corn fiber, I've seen mixed opinions on this. I'll be looking into it over the next few weeks and testing blood sugar to see the effect. I do like Perfect Keto Bars. They are my favourite and they don't taste like "protein" bars. Similar to arrowroot powder, tapioca on it's own is not an issue but it can be problematic if you use too much (high in carbs). The amount used in Keto Bars is negligible and has almost no effect on the carb count.

Thank you so much! I really do owe it all to the information on your blog and in your cookbooks. For my body type that was going from a size 20 (American) to a size 4. I appreciate the clarifying info too and look forward to your findings. Sometimes I work in facilitates that don't allow contracting therapists to have access to a fridge or storage and I have yet to find a cooler that holds up to Florida summer heat in a car for 6 or more hours. Something I can keep in my therapy bins for emergencies would be wonderful.

Thank you so much, you made my day! So so happy for you! I have to say I'm jealous about Florida - I live in rainy England! Would you like to share your story with our readers? If you do, let me know by sending an email! 😊

Very useful article, Emily. I've made a list of all items for plane travels and I've keep it in my phone. I always can access to it whenever I need it. Thank you so much! BTW, including a simple list (without pictures or descriptions) in a pdf would be great!

Thank you Catalin! I'll try to do that in the next few days if time allows! 😊

Thank you for this article; it came at just the right time.  My husband and I will be traveling to Rome from NY and returning to NY from Tel Aviv.  The Rome flight is about 9 hours and the Tel Aviv flight is close to 13 hours.  We have decided to fast on both flights because I just recently read an article that said fasting eliminates jet lag!  We are used to intermittent fasting, but just to be sure we can do the long hauls, we are trying it on a flight from Alabama to New York in a few weeks.  That, with stops, runs about 7 hours; so it will be a good test.  However, your suggestions of what to take are excellent, and I plan to take a few items just in case the fasting is too difficult.  Long flights tend to be boring, and boredom tends to lead to cravings.  So having a meat/cheese rollup, hard cooked egg, and keto muffin of one kind or another in a "survival bag" just is case will be our safety net.  I very much appreciated the article and know that I'm not the only one!

That sounds like an amazing trip Marilyn! I fasted that on the way back from California (traveling to the UK) and I did feel much better. Also I think it was the time because our flight was late in the evening so we were not hungry. This is keto unrelated but do get noise cancelling headphones - it's a game changer. Have fun and keto on! 😊

How to Get Easy Meals While on Vacation

How to Get Easy Meals While on Vacation

by Victoria Ashford - July 24, 2017

Easy Meals While on Vacation

So, you're ready to go on vacation finally, but you're on the fence about staying keto or not?  Don't pack another item until you go through our handy Konscious Keto checklist on how to make easy meals while on vacation, below.

Many people assume they have to quit keto or "cheat" all week because of the lack of control over their food, but this isn't true. With some simple hacks and a bit of planning, you can stay in ketosis easily, on many vacations.

Whether you're jetting off for a week in the sea and sand or hopping away for a quick city break, more food options exist than you may realize.

That's why we've put together a few simple steps you can take to stay keto (or low-carb) while you are on vacation.

These tips will help you make good food choices without feeling bound by the keto rulebook. Let's find out more.

While it’s easy to throw in the towel and call a vacation a big week off keto, the reality is some people are on keto to supplement health conditions, and others love being in ketosis.

If you're someone who doesn't (or can't) give up keto, you're our kind of person, and we have some  excellent tips and tricks to share with you that will help you enjoy the best of worlds - being in  ketosis and going on vacation.

However, forewarning for anyone else, if you're planning to hit the beach and wear some cute clothes while on vacation, you're going to want to stay in ketosis.

Eating high-carb can make you gain weight quickly and bloat up, and many people are disheartened to find they gain back water weight almost instantly when they start consuming carbs.

This is because carbs make you hold water weight; the good news is this can be lost very quickly again once you stop eating carbs.

We'll show you one simple trick you can use to prevent bloating and make sure you look and feel your best for all those holiday selfies!

Keep reading to discover the easy meal hacks you can use on vacation. These are a great way to get high-fat low-carb meals into your schedule, without lots of fuss.

Keto Tip 1 - Bring Keto Snacks

Traveling on keto is much easier when you have some allies in your pocket or suitcase. Many of our fave keto snacks are easy to go with (they don’t have to be refrigerated), and you can get them in snack sizes.

You can also use ziplock bags and Tupperware to transform bulk buys into your travel-friendly snack packs too. We love to add an assortment of goodies into the grab and go bags. These are perfect airport treats.

We love keto diet nuts , jerky, nut butter, and even hard cheese when traveling; you can make these yourself at home to take with you.

If you’re driving, you can be more lenient and fill up on fatty snacks at gas stations and grocery stores on the way, or pack a cooler.

Either way, you'll get jealous glances at your keto snacks on the road!

Here are some ideas:

  • Hard cheeses like cheddar, parmesan or gouda or full-fat Laughing Cow cheese
  • Pork rinds with lime
  • Meats like beef jerky or salami
  • Raw, low-carb choices like almonds and macadamia nuts
  • Sugar-free nut butter packets that you can easily carry in a bag or purse
  • MCT oil powder or soft gels for stirring into water or coffee

Keto Tip 2 - Research Restaurants Online

Almost all restaurants will have some keto options, even if you do have to quasi-order the menu the way you want it. When eating out, look for meat and cheese options.

Stick with green veggies and be wary of meats or fish that have breading or are covered in sauce, sugar in condiments, and low-fat options on the menu that tout the benefits of low-fat or low-calorie emails. They mean "not keto."

Another simple tip is to load up on breakfast so that you can rely on smaller snacks throughout the day. Keto breakfasts (bacon and eggs, etc.) are much easier to find and very filling. They also eliminate the desire to cheat.

Many restaurants are willing and prepared to make food how you want it, so don’t be shy to ask; you can omit the buns from your burger, or ask for no croutons in your salad.

Dinners we love to order:

  • Fajitas  - beef or chicken fajitas without the tortillas, topped with avocado and cheese
  • Beef burgers  - without the buns and breading and veggies
  • Steak - it's your vacation, live a little and ask for extra butter
  • Salads - just be sure to load up with extra added fats like olive oil and protein to meet your macros
  • Breakfast for dinner - need we say more? Yum!

Look up the options in your area to see what will have the best picks so when someone asks what you want to do; you will have an answer. This is also easy to do on vacation as many people want to make the most of their time.

You can also look up   the restaurant   menu for many larger restaurants or franchises. go to the website or call and ask.   This is your health we're talking about here, don't be shy.

Keto Tip 3 - Pick The Right Keto Drinks

As the saying goes, failing to prepare is preparing to fail! Having a game plan in mind is an easy way to set your worries at ease.

No one expects you to go not drink on your vacation, and having a few drinks is an ideal way to relax and unwind. The best way to go into this situation is to make sure you choose the right drinks.

Those tropical smoothie drinks look cute, but they're loaded with sugars. Avoid these and order simpler drinks instead, such as a glass of wine or a liquor and a splash of diet soda.

Now, usually we don't recommend drinking diet soda, but you can either go for on the rocks or bring your own mixer; most people prefer to let the rules be broken just this one time, as most bars carry standard diet sodas despite the remote locations.

Check out your guide here on what alcohol you can drink on keto to get an idea of how many carbs you can trade in.

Keto Tip 4 - Stock Up at the Hotel

Hotels offer some surprisingly easy ways to stay keto. Loading up on a quality breakfast and keto coffee before your day trip is an easy way to make sure you are energized and satiated.

We love to add MCT oil and Keto Activate to our coffee with a dollop of whipped cream or half and half in a pinch.

You may want to take a shaker cup with you to mix it all, but you’ll appreciate the keto comfort at the hotel.

You should ask for shelled eggs, not egg whites at hotels or restaurants, as they contain binding agents that are hidden carbs. After that, simply enjoy bacon and sausage and see some sights!

You don't even have to stay in a hotel. Airbnb and other accommodations are a great way to tap into a full-blown kitchen.

Keto Tip 5 - Look for Paleo & Keto Hotspots

More restaurants and cities are going low-carb, so you will be thrilled to find more restaurants and options in major cities.

From Austin to Portland, there are now waves of people embracing this way of eating, and finding some friendly faces can be a great vacation destination. You may even find yourself seeking out new vacations because you're so keto.

We love to go hiking, trekking, and spend more time outdoors with all this newfound energy; why waste it? We want to hear where you plan to go on your next keto vacation.

Drop some comments below and share your must-have travel tips for other keto adventurers.

All in all, we think that staying keto while traveling is a great way to take care of your health. Travel can be exciting and nourishes your soul, but dietary changes can also cause gastric upset and alert travel plans.

As it's pretty easy to travel on keto now, we hope you'll give it a go. Having a back up like Keto Activate when you are on vacation or when you get home makes it easy to cheat the system and get back into ketosis, quickly.

It contains premium chocolate ketones that taste incredible and energize your body to help you achieve a deeper state of ketosis.

Don't tell anyone we told you but if you order dessert on vacation and take Keto Activate , no one will know the truth about what you ate!

Let customers speak for us

Tried y’all out for our recent backpacking trip. Husband and I recently started a Keto diet and have lost almost 60 pounds between us. He can be picky. All I can say is you knocked it out of the park! Great Job! Y’all are now our go to company for backpacking food!

Started my Keto journey about 3 months ago. Purchased a sampler pack for a Maryland Section Hike. The meals were awesome!! Very tasty, filled me up without being too full. I will without a doubt be buying more of these meals for future trips.

My brother and I hiked 60 miles on the NCT last week and ate next mile meals each night. These are, by far, the best dehydrated meals we’ve had. I would recommend these meals for sure, and I will buy more for my next hiking/camping trip.

I ate this today for lunch out on a hike (my wife had the Chicken and Broccoli) and it was so good. Stir it up good so the cheese mixes up - and yes even the cheese was gooey and delicious in this meal. Watch out cause this company is going to explode more than they already have!

After many many miles of trails including the CT and the CDT I discovered these meals after my ex-wife went on a keto diet. We were on a backpacking trip and she offered to share a meal with me. Best hiking meal I'd ever had. Thank you so much for producing these delicious, healthy meals.

For your next early morning flight, check out these keto road trip snacks! All are low in carbohydrates, easy to pack, and some are even easy to find at any store.

Staying keto while traveling is not as difficult as you might think it is. But a little planning ahead is needed, especially if you’re serious about your diet.

With that said, having an arsenal of keto-friendly snacks ready is your best bet. Bringing keto foods with you is simply the safest way to maintain a keto diet while traveling. But if you’re not so keen on pre-trip food prepping and would like to leave some room for spontaneity, there are plenty of quick meal options at stores, gas stations, and even fast food stops.

To help you find the best keto road trip snacks for your next adventure, we’ve made this list of 15 keto snack ideas. Most don’t require any or much preparation and some you can pick up at the store.

  • 1. Keto Bars

KMK_Keto-bars

Keto bars are the keto dieter’s version of energy and/or protein bars. They’re great for long road trips because they provide both energy and filling protein packaged into a convenient snack. Plus, the curb cravings for sweets. Our chocolate Keto Bars come in three flavors: coconut, cookie dough, and peanut butter. Each provides 19g of healthy fat, some of which comes from added MCTs. They also have a generous 9g of protein and 12g of fiber to keep you feeling full and satisfied.

  • 2. Keto Gummies

KMK_Keto-gummies

When it comes to the best keto travel snacks that are sure to curb sugar cravings nothing beats Keto Gummies . Another thing that’s great about these is that they have only 2g of sugar but plenty of fiber to keep you feeling full — something you won’t ever get with regular gummies. They also have added MCTs for boosting energy levels and supporting ketosis. Keep your intake within the recommended levels as eating too much can upset your stomach.

  • 3. Keto Brownie

KMK_Keto-brownie

Brownies make convenient keto travel snacks too. But if you’d like to skip making low-carb brownies before your road trip, try these convenient Keto Brownie snacks in individual packaging. They contain pea protein and bovine collagen, both of which reduce hunger. One keto brownie has only 2g of net carbs and are made from keto dark chocolate, so feel free to have two or three, that is if your macros limit allows it.

  • 4. Keto Bread

KMK_Keto-bread

You probably don’t see bread as much of an on-the-go snack option, but on keto, you should. Since there aren’t that many low-carb pastry options out there, sliced Keto Bread can serve as a fantastic vessel for cream cheese, hummus, avocado dip, and deli meats that you might end up picking up at a store. Plus, you can enjoy a slice or two with any homemade travel meal.

  • 5. Keto Cookies

Kiss-My-KetoKiss-My-Keto-Keto-Cookies-Keto-Cookies

Who doesn’t love having a cookie or two while traveling (or any other time)? You can make your own low-carb cookies with nut flours, butter, and low-carb additions or go for store-bought Keto Cookies to save yourself the trouble. These have only 3g net carbs per serving. Choose between butter cookie or chocolate chip varieties — or even better — choose both!

  • 6. Beef Jerky (or Meat Sticks)

travel keto meals

Sugar-free beef jerky and meat sticks are now easy to find at convenience stores and online. These are just as good as the beef jerky and meat sticks you used to eat before your low-carb days, but they’re better for you since they contain barely any carbs. These products will give you loads of protein — about 14g in an ounce! But you won’t get much fat from jerky though, since it is made from lean meat.

  • 7. Nuts & Seeds

travel keto meals

Nuts and seeds are some of the most popular keto travel snacks out there. They’re super portable, have the perfect keto macros, are rich in keto fats, and you can buy them almost anywhere. When going for a snack mix, read the label for any added sugars or high-carb ingredients. Another option is to choose nut butter packets, which are not only delicious but super convenient.

  • 8. Pork Rinds

travel keto meals

Pork rinds are a substitute for chips and Cheetos for those who follow keto. They have zero carbs but loads of fat and protein. Specifically, a 1 oz-serving has 0g net carbs, 9g of fat, and 17g protein. With that type of nutrient profile, you should feel free to enjoy as many pork rinds as you wish. They’re easy to find at any store and even online, and there are flavored varieties in case you prefer snacks with lots of flavor.

  • 9. Canned Tuna

travel keto meals

Keto travel meal options don’t have to be complicated — just grab a can of tuna and your favorite keto pastry and you’re good to go. It’s one of the best sources of essential omega-3 fatty acids, which we need for brain functioning, skin health, and to keep inflammation at bay. But it’s also a source of protein, which you’ll appreciate if you’re going on a long trip. Canned tuna is also a great ingredient in lunch bowls, sandwiches, tacos, patties, and other snack meals.

travel keto meals

When buying cheese for a road trip, go for string or Babybel. These are individually packaged and, thus, less messy to eat on the road than other cheeses. Or maybe even choose something crispier, like cheese sticks or cheese crisps. Cheese, as you know, is a low-carb and high-fat dairy food, so it’s great for the keto diet. While it’s perfectly tasty on its own, you could also combine it with berries, keto crackers, and low-carb hummus in a lunch box.

  • 11. Hard-Boiled Eggs

travel keto meals

Hard-boiled eggs are another protein-packed snack that happens to be low-carb. You can prepare them a day ahead of your trip and enjoy them as they are or tossed into a lunch bowl, made into an egg salad, or turned into deviled eggs. But if you’d like to keep it simple, they make a great addition to a protein/bistro box.

  • 12. Avocados

travel keto meals

Before you started your keto journey, bananas were probably your default travel snack. But these days, you should replace that carby fruit with avocados . They have barely any carbs but are loaded with healthy fats. You can enjoy avocados as is, just sprinkled with salt and pepper. Or another great idea is to make an avocado dip to enjoy with low-carb cheese crisps.

  • 13. Olives (in Olive Oil)

travel keto meals

Olives, be they green, kalamata, or niçoise, are a low-calorie food that you should consider as your go-to keto travel snack. They don’t provide much in the way of fat or protein (unless marinated in olive oil), but they are low-carb and they are rich in antioxidants. The pickled kind will give you a nice dose of sodium — which can be helpful if dealing with keto flu. But the ones sold in olive oil will give you a nice dose of healthy fats for energy.

  • 14. Pickles

travel keto meals

Another low-calorie option worth considering is pickles. If you eat a whole cup, you’d get only 17 calories and around 2g net carbs. Optionally, if you’d prefer something more protein-rich, you can use them to make a dip with plain Greek yogurt. Pickles provide lots of vitamin K and many brands have added sodium — great for preventing the keto flu. Make sure to read the label when buying pickles since some varieties can have added sugar.

  • 15. Low-Carb Crackers

travel keto meals

Low-carb crackers are easy to make at home, but there are store-bought versions as well. You may be able to find cheese crisps made with 100% cheese or almond flour crackers that are also low in carbs. These are great subs for snacks like Cheez-Its, Ritz, and similar products. They curb your cravings for crunch while giving you nothing but keto nutrition along the way.

Traveling and snack foods go hand in hand. But most snack items are not really keto-friendly, and that’s why you need to bring your own food with you. Or you could simply do your research before the trip to learn which snacks available at stores, gas stations, and fast food places are keto-friendly.

Some of the keto snack ideas listed here are ready-to-eat, while others are easy to pack for your next travel. But all items are low-carb so you don’t have to worry about being kicked out of ketosis on your days off.

Separate food for x-ray screening.

The TSA has updated their guidelines for bringing food through security. You must now separate food for x-ray screening by placing it in a clear plastic bag. (This is NOT the 3-1-1 liquids bag, so you are not limited to a quart size bag.)

“ Passengers should place their carry-on food items into a clear plastic bag and place that bag into a bin. Food items often trigger an alarm during the screening process; separating the food from the carry-on bag lessens the likelihood that a TSA officer will need to open the carry-on bag and remove the food items for a closer inspection. This requirement allows social distancing, reduces the TSA officer’s need to touch a person’s container of food and reduces potential for cross-contamination. TSA Precheck members do not need to remove items from their bags. ”

It was so nice having my snacks, water bottle, iPad, headphones, and other goodies organized and at my fingertips in flight, PLUS my stuff never touched the germy seat back pocket or tray table.

It was so nice having my snacks, water bottle, iPad, headphones, and other goodies organized and at my fingertips in flight, PLUS my stuff never touched the germy seat back pocket or tray table.

Updated March 2020….

Last week I flew on a total of four flights to visit my family. Up until now, as the coronavirus is exploding all over the world, I never really thought much about germs. Especially germs on a plane.

I ate right off the tray table, and put my phone, snacks, and water bottle in the seatback pocket for convenience.

I never thought about the fact that hundreds of germy fingers had touched the tray table, seat pocket, seatbelt, and other common areas on the plane.

But with people getting sick, and just coming off a two week horrible cold myself, I didn’t want to take chances.

Consider a tray table cover with organizing pockets and have a totally clean surface for your flight.

I was browsing Amazon looking for a disposable tray table cover and found Airplane Pockets . It is a stretchy polyester totally washable and reusable tray table cover that slides on easily and has a series of pockets that hang down to keep your water, phone, snacks, or anything else organized and at your fingertips during your flight.

More importantly, your food, water, or electronics never has to touch the airplane tray table or seat back pocket.

It took all of 30 seconds to install. I sat down, pulled out the Airplane Pocket, lowered the tray table, and slide it over the table. Then raised the table again for takeoff.

I filled the pockets with all of my in-flight essentials:

water bottle

gum & mints

Not only did the Airplane Pockets keep my stuff organized, but my food, water, and gear never touched gross airplane surfaces.

I cannot recommend Airplane Pockets highly enough. You can check out the current price on Amazon right here: Airplane Pockets

Or wipe down the tray table with antibacterial wipes.

If you don’t have a cover for the tray table, consider using a travel pack of Purell wipes, Wet Ones , or similar antibacterial wipes. These are designed to sanitize your hands, but in a pinch they can be used to wipe down the tray table, and also clean your hands if you don’t have access to soap and water. You can find these in the travel toiletries section of stores like Walmart, CVS, and Target.

Lysol or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes are designed to kill germs on hard, non-porous surfaces so they are a good option as well.

If you bring any type of travel packaged antibacterial wipes they are totally TSA-compliant and DO NOT have to go in your 3-1-1 liquids bag. I put a pack of Purell wipes inside the tote bag that is my personal item.

Update April 2020…

I took four flights during the midst of the pandemic when airports were like ghost towns, and followed the procedure described above. By this time the CDC recommended wearing a mask so I wore a mask on the plane and inside the airports.

But first, what makes a great keto travel snack?

Do you really need to plan keto snacks.

Let’s be real. When we do keto likely we’re not starving between meals so keto snacking on the plane or in general doesn’t have to be a big deal.

If your flight is in the morning, and you routinely intermittent fast, just grabbing a coffee at the airport or skipping breakfast is always an option. This is true keto minimalism.

But I like to bring snacks when I travel, especially on planes, because you never know when your flight will be delayed or cancelled. I just feel more calm and prepared when I have my own keto-friendly food in my carry-on. If I don’t eat it on the flight, I’ll just keep it in my hotel room for whenever I need to munch.

What are good keto snack options for travel?

Choose a keto snack that is portable, will stay fresh, is sturdy and easily packed.  An energy bar can be crammed in a carry-on, while smoked salmon with low carb crackers takes a little attention when it comes to packing. (You may also get unwanted attention on a flight when you whip out seafood, but that’s another blog post entirely.)

I personally look for snacks that are easy to pack, don’t need refrigeration, and don’t have lots of added crap like artificial flavors, colors, high fructose corn syrup, etc.

Know what foods you can and can’t pack in your carry-on.

The last thing you want while traveling is a hassle from TSA in the security check. It’s smart to know their rules BEFORE you pack any food (or other items) in your carry-on.

Check the TSA website for its official food rules.

If in doubt, check it out! If you're not sure about a food check with the TSA guidelines. Here's the current guidelines about food: TSA Food Guidelines

Still unclear? Simply snap a picture or send a question to AskTSA on Facebook Messenger or Twitter ( @AskTsa ).

Liquids or creamy items abide by the 3-1-1 rule.

Creamy or liquid items (peanut butter, hummus, dips, yogurt, dressings or oils) need to be 3.4 oz or less and go in your one-quart ziplock bag. Need a refresher? Here’s a quick video…. TSA 3-1-1 Rule (3 ounce containers, 1 quart-sized ziplock bag, 1 per traveler)

Now onto the 10 keto travel snacks you can take on the plane!

You obviously can’t bring water from home, but you CAN either bring your own (empty) water bottle or thermos and fill it after you go through security or purchase a bottle of water.

Environmentally conscious and well-organized me brings my stainless steel empty water bottle, like this one . It keeps your water cold, the bottle doesn’t sweat, and it’s spill-proof.

Frazzled me is happy to shell out $5+ for an over-priced bottle of water once I clear security so I have it just in case.

It’s not that I’m worried about drinking 64 ounces of water or anything like that – I just want my own water if I need it.  If a headache strikes, I can take a Motrin with no worries.  If I’m thirsty, I don’t have to wait for in-flight beverage service.

Buy water or bring your own bottle and fill it after security.

2 - Keto protein or snack bars.

Protein bars (thinking 20 or more grams of protein) are substantial and filling, so they can be used to replace a meal in a pinch. These days there are TONS of options.Have some fun shopping at your local grocery or health food store. Or check out Amazon and read reviews. Sample some bars and choose your favorites for travel. Some bars have a good amount of protein, they’re lowish in carbs, but don’t have a lot of fat, so just keep that in mind. You can bump your fat intake later in the day, if you wish.

Keto snack bars have less protein and are best used for, ummm, a snack. Pair with a handful of macadamia nuts and beef jerky for a fun on-the-go meal.

Here are some of my favorites…

ONE protein bars. These bars are very highly rated on Amazon. You will find around 20 grams of protein and 13 net carbs per serving, so just keep that in mind. The birthday cake and maple glazed donut flavors are amazing!

Quest bars. Quest bars come in a ton of flavors and they have 20-21 grams of protein each. Just like the One bars, you don’t have “keto” macros in your bar.

Kiss My Keto snack bars. These bars have 19 grams fat, 3 grams net carbs, and 9 grams protein.

Perfect Keto bars. Perfect Keto snack bars have a similar macro breakdown to the Kiss My Keto brand.

3 - Jerky or beef (or other meat) sticks.

Jerky or meat sticks on their own is a great simple snack, or pair it with a fat like cheese or olives for a keto macro-friendly mini meal.

Back in the day you just had Slim Jims – now there are great jerky choices made from a variety of meats, from beef to bison to turkey and good ‘ol bacon!

I personally am not a fan of super hard, rip-your-teeth-out jerky, but I do like meat sticks, especially ones made with ingredients I can pronounce. Since we’re doing keto, look for jerky or meat sticks without added sugar. Grass-fed is a bonus, as is no added nitrates or nitrites.

I actually have made homemade jerky in the past and this is a good reminder for me to make a batch or two!

Chomps Beef Sticks are grass-fed and made without added sugar. They are certified keto and Whole30 approved. They are also individually wrapped and perfect for travel!

Mission Meats Keto Beef Sticks is Amazon’s current best-seller. These are made from grass-fed beef, no added sugar, and no nitrates.

FBOMB Keto Meat Sticks are made from pork, and also have zero added sugar or nitrates. The Salt & Pepper Pork flavor is delish!

And just because BACON, Oberto makes All-Natural Applewood Bacon Jerky .

4 - Nuts, seeds, and nut butters.

Mmmmm crunchy (and/or creamy) healthy fats!

Nut Butters

There are lots of brands of nut butters (peanut, almond, macadamia, cashew - or combinations!) that come in single-serve packages which are perfect for travel! (Remember, these go in your quart ziplock baggie.) Eat the nut butters straight up on their own, or use as a dip for fresh veggies, or a spread on low carb crackers

You don’t have to choose a nut butter that specifically markets itself as “keto” but be sure to watch out for added sugars.

FBOMB Nut Butters offers 1 ounce pouches (perfect for travel) and they offer a variety pack that includes Salted Chocolate Macadamia, Macadamia Pecan, Macadamia Coconut, and Macadamia Sea Salt! Mmmmm for healthy fatty goodness!

Performance Nut Butter has individual pouches of delicious Macadamia, Coconut & Cashew butter.

Legendary Foods Chocolate Banana Peanut Butte r in squeeze packets. If you love traditional peanut butter you’ll love the hint of chocolate and banana.

SuperFat Nut Butter Keto Snacks have traditional nut butter flavors like Macadamia Coconut and Cacao, but they also offer an MCT & Probiotic nut butter , as well as Nitro Coffee nut butter.

Nuts are super portable, often come in individual packages, and it’s simple to throw your favorite nut combos in a ziplock baggie. Just be sure to look for nuts with no added sugars. I love to splurge on macadamia nuts because they’re super delicious and full of healthy fats, but choose your favorite or favorites!

I buy larger packages on Amazon and divide them up into individual serving sizes when traveling. You can click on the links below to find the current price on Amazon.

Macadamia Nuts

If you like variety, Oh! Nuts has a nuts and seeds combo pack with individual portions of, ummm, nuts and seeds.

5 - Cheese or cheese crisps.

Cheese is such a delicious and filling keto snack. You can bring solid fresh cheeses like Parmesan, Gouda, cheddar, or mozzarella.

Or try homemade or purchased Parmesan, cheddar or other cheese crisps. Homemade are super simple to make (and this recipe shows you how to do it), but purchased are just EASY.

The only concern is with creamy cheeses or cheese spreads. You can bring 3.4 ounces or less and it must fit in your quart-sized ziplock bag.

Some store-bought cheese crisp options are:

Just the Cheese bars. OMG. These are literally baked cheese and I love the variety pack that includes aged cheddar, grilled cheese, jalapeno, and mild cheese.

Cello Whisps Cheese Crisps. These come packaged in convenient 2.2oz bags. It says each bag is two servings, but I have zero problem eating it all! The variety pack has cheddar, Parmesan, Asiago and pepper cheese.

I’m not really into goat cheese, but if you’re fancier than I am these High Key Goat Cheese Crunches are super highly rated.

6 - Veggies, with or without dip.

Veggies are a great travel snack and adding salad dressing, oil, or dips will give you yummy fats to hit your macros! Choose raw, hard veggies like celery, zucchini, carrot, radishes, or mushrooms to munch on. Salads are a go as well.

Just remember any dressings or dips must be in a 3 ounce container and fit in your one-quart ziplock bag for liquids. It’s hard to find individual packets of dressings or dips, so these reusable plastic leak-proof squeeze bottles are perfect for travel: Yinggg Squeezable Salad Dressing Containers To Go

7 - Keto protein shakes.

If you love your keto shake, you can bring it on the plane - but with a work-around. Just throw a scoop or two of your favorite low carb protein powder in a shaker bottle and add water after you go through security. Easy peasy!

Some popular keto protein powders are:

Perfect Keto Chocolate Protein Powder. This protein powder (10 grams protein per serving) also has collagen and MCT oil so you get lots of good stuff in one serving.

Orgain Protein Powder is a plant-based protein that is low in net carbs (8 per serving). It has 21 grams protein and is vegan and lactose-free.

Ketologie Chocolate Ultra Low Carb Meal Replacement Shake.

8 - Keto krunchies! Low carb “granola,” crackers or chips, with or without dip, cheese, or spreads.

Crunchy keto snacks are perfect for the plane and there are so many options. Choose from the old standby, pork rinds, low carb chips, or keto crackers. Make it a keto mini meal by adding cheese, dips, a mini tub of guacamole. Just be sure you put any creamy or soft toppings in your quart-sized ziplock baggie.

Here are some delicious options:

Primal Thin Crackers by Julian Bakery . So tasty and they come in Salt & Pepper, and Parmesan flavors. Only 5 net carbs per serving.

KetoLogic Keto Crisps come in several flavors, including Buffalo, Ghost Pepper, Chili Lime, and Pizza.

Quest Tortilla Style Protein Chips are super popular. They have 14 grams of protein and only 4 net carbs, and come in several flavors including Chili Lime, Ranch, Taco, and Nacho.

Diabetic Kitchen Cinnamon Pecan Keto Granola . Before I went keto I loved my granola! If you like a slightly sweet, crunchy keto snack, this is perfect. Eat with a spoon or with your fingers. Only 3 net carbs per serving.

9 - Low carb sweet treats, purchased or homemade.

Keto cookies, fat bombs, or brownies? Yes, please! If baking low carb treats is your jam, do your thing. Or, purchase packaged desserts, protein cookies, or even candy.

If you make keto sweets, you probably have your own favorite recipes. I don’t personally make many low carb goodies because they trigger my sweet tooth, but I love me some 90% dark chocolate!

Here are some store-bought sweet keto options, perfect for the plane.

90% Dark Chocolate . I usually buy Lindt brand and not chocolate that is specifically marketed as “keto” or “low carb.” The net carbs are low enough for me (about 2 per square) and I’d rather not mess with sugar alcohols which bother my stomach.

Bulletproof Fudge Brownie Collagen Protein Bars . I was shocked at how much I loved this bar! It has grass-fed collagen and lots of quality fats like cashew butter, XCT oil, and coconut oil.

HighKey Mini Chocolate Chip (or Snickerdoodle) Cookies. They’re keto-friendly cookies. Need I say more??

Shrewd Food Strawberries and Cream Protein Crisps.

10 - Fast food, restaurant meals or other food purchased at the airport.

Lastly, most airports have a ton of restaurant options once you pass through security. You can grab a burger (obviously skipping the bun and fries!), a fresh salad, a tub of hard-boiled eggs, or even a pizza. (Ok, probably not a keto pizza, but I’ve been known to grab a mini pizza and eat just the toppings!)

I totally love grabbing a coffee and the Bacon Gruyere Egg Bites from an airport Starbucks when I travel. I don’t generally do Starbucks at home (too cheap, ha ha!) but it’s a splurge when I travel.

It’s quick to run in and out of an airport “mini mart,” but definitely allow enough time if you plan to grab a take-out order for the plane. If you have your heart set on bringing a yummy hot or cold meal, look at the airport’s website to see what restaurants are available in your terminal.

There you have it, 10 keto travel snacks you can take right on the plane. Spend a little bit of time thinking about what you’d like to bring with you next time you travel. Have fun checking our your local grocery store or browse snacks on Amazon. Or, pick up a little something right at the airport.

Or, you can be a true minimalist and fast. But that’s no fun.

15 Keto Travel Snacks

15 Keto Travel Snacks – Best tips and hacks to help you stay on a low carb diet while traveling with ketogenic diet food for abroad, road trips or airplane snacks.

Selection of keto travel snacks

I’ve always loved to travel and never let my diet stop me from seeing the world.

Since first starting the keto diet 2 and half years ago I’ve been to Japan, Singapore, moved from Australia to Ireland and traveled around Europe. Through that time I’ve enjoyed plenty of easy keto travel snacks.

On your next trip you may want to take along a small cooler along with an ice pack or two, to keep everything cool, especially if you’re going a long way.

As you’ll see, there are lots of great options to take from home and grab on the go while you’re on the road, airplane or abroad.

Keto Travel Foods

Here are ideas for keto travel foods to enjoy while on the go:

Keto salad on the go

A travel staple – it’s easy to make or find keto friendly salads while on the go. Some salads to look out for or prepare include chicken salad, tuna salad or just buy a bowl full of greens and top it with an avocado, some nuts and cheese. (All of which require no cooking and just throwing together in a bowl.)

The above pictured salad is one I found in a supermarket while on a road trip around Ireland. I simply picked off the non-keto friendly items like corn but still got to enjoy a hearty meal of vegetables and meat.

2 Ingredient keto deviled eggs

There are so many ways to enjoy eggs while you’re on the road. It’s easy to find ready hard-boiled eggs at supermarkets, convenience stores and cafes.

Supermarkets also usually stock ready made egg mayo, just watch for added sugars and carbs. You can enjoy it straight from the carton or fill a lettuce cup with egg mayo.

If you’re going on a road trip or have access to a kitchen while traveling then you can also make deviled eggs, like these 2 ingredient deviled eggs .

3. Strawberries & Heavy Cream

Keto travel food idea - strawberries and cream

With the keto diet you’re limited to berries when it comes to fruit, but that doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying a bounty of berries every day.

If you have access to a hotel room fridge on your travels then you could also buy a carton of cream to enjoy with berries for an indulgent travel sweet treat loaded with healthy fats while also being naturally low in grams of net carbs.

4. Vegetables

Keto vegetables for travel

One of the best keto road trip snacks is packing plenty of fresh veggies to keep you nourished. Go for chopped cucumber, peppers and salad for easy snacks, along with mayo, sour cream or another low carb sauce for dipping.

Another keto lifestyle option is to simply enjoy an avocado by slicing it in half and scooping out the nourishing goodness by the spoonful.

5. Ready Cooked Meat, Chicken & Fish

Keto ready to go meat options

Whether it’s beef jerky, biltong, slim jims, meat sticks, pork rinds, smoked salmon, tuna, deli meats, cooked chicken or beef there are loads of ready to go keto friendly meat options that you’ll easily find at local grocery store and gas stations that you can enjoy as a great snack. (Or even make a meal of!)

Just be sure to carefully read the ingredient list of any low-carb snacks, looking out for any hidden sugars or carbs that find their way into processed foods.

6. Dairy

Keto dairy travel snacks

There are plenty of cheese options that you can enjoy instantly or on the go including babybel, cheese sticks, cream cheese, string cheese, cheddar cheese, moon cheese and even whisps cheese crisps.

Also, keep a look out for low carb friendly yoghurt options, which tend to usually be plain, natural or Greek, which you can sweeten with a handful of keto fruits such as berries to keep your number of carbs as low as possible.

7. Meat and Cheese Plate

No Cook Low Carb Meals - Meat and cheese platter

Recently while I was in Amsterdam, I put together the above meat and cheese plates as easy keto snacks. Luckily our hotel had a fridge so I visited a local supermarket and chose a variety of cheese and smoked meat/salami options.

Then for snacks, I filled a plate with a selection of meat, cheese and also added some chopped vegetables and strawberries, to keep me satisfied between keto meals.

You can even make homemade pepperoni chips by frying or baking thinly sliced pepperoni until crisp, allow to cool completely and enjoy the quick snack on the go.

8. DIY Keto Travel Snack Trail Mix

Keto travel foods - DIY Trail Mix

You can put together your own low carb friendly trail mix before leaving home and then portion out daily keto travel snacks to enjoy on the go to help you with your weight loss journey.

Here are some ideas of keto foods to include in your trail mix:

  • Almonds (like these homemade cinnamon roasted almonds )
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Brazil Nuts
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Chia Seeds
  • Freeze dried strawberries
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Shredded Coconut

You could also enjoy nut butters such as peanut butter or almond butter either shamelessly by the spoonful or in a sweet treat. You could also take along those small nut butter pouches ( like these ) to enjoy on the go.

9. Protein Shake

keto protein shake for on the go

Take along your go to low carb protein powder ( like this one ) in a variety of flavors and a shaker and then just buy keto friendly milk while you’re on the go.

This is a great way to help you meet your protein macros without stress when following a low carb high-fat diet.

Nowadays you can also find low carb and keto friendly protein bars, such as quest bars, at supermarkets and health food stores that make the perfect grab and go snack that’s low in g net carbs, especially handy for long trips.

10. Cookies

Keto diet travel cookies

You can easily prepare a couple of batches of cookies to take as travel snacks, or find perfect keto cookies such as chocolate chip cookies in stores.

My favourites to make are almond butter cookies , chocolate cookies and no bake peanut butter cookies .

11. Keto Chocolate For Travel

Keto dark chocolate travel snacks

The good news is that dark chocolate without added sugar makes an excellent, portable snack that will satisfy your sweet cravings.

You’ll want to make sure it’s 85%+ ( like this one ) and as low carb as possible and limit yourself to a row a day.

12. Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge

Keto chocolate peanut butter fudge

Satisfy your sweet tooth with this keto travel snack that’s low in net carbs that you can make at home and take with you to enjoy through your journey. ( Here’s the recipe. )

The fat bombs are an easy sweet treat to prepare and taste like peanut butter cups, but full of healthy fats and without the sugar or carbs.

13. Jelly/Jello

Low carb jelly or jello desserts

There are lots of choices of low carb, sugar free jello/jelly desserts that are either ready made or can easily be made at your hotel, following the instructions on the packaging.

Just read the nutrition label carefully and make the decision for yourself about whether you’re happy to include artificial sweeteners, flavors and ingredients in your diet.

14. Chia Puddings

Keto chia pudding

If you have access to a fridge, and with just a little planning, you can enjoy daily chia puddings as keto friendly snacks.

Simply combine together low carb yoghurt, berries and chia seeds, leave the pudding to thicken in the fridge and enjoy as a simple make ahead snack option. ( Here’s the recipe. )

I’ll often put one together in the morning and leave it in the fridge to thicken while I’m out and about for the day. Then, when I come back to the hotel there’s a nourishing snack waiting in the fridge for me.

15. Hot Chocolate/Coffee/Tea

Keto hot chocolate on the go

Take supplies so that you can easily enjoy your favourite hot drink on the go. Easy Keto options include tea bags, keto coffee or keto friendly hot chocolate powder ( like this ) to easily enjoy hot chocolates on the go.

15 Keto Travel Snacks - Tips and hacks to help you stay on a low carb diet while traveling with ketogenic diet food for abroad, road trips or airplane snacks.

As you can see, there are plenty of easy keto travel snacks to choose from while you’re traveling.

Whether it’s a road trip, plane trip or exploring abroad there are lots of almost instant options to help you stay on track through your travels.

Important Note: be aware if traveling by plane that there are restrictions about liquids and what foods you can take into other countries. So, do your research so that you don’t have any items confiscated. And importantly – enjoy your travels!

To save the most time, try these tips when you make lazy keto meals:

  • Use Prepared Ingredients – Get pre-chopped veggies, shredded chicken , pre-shredded cheeses, and prepared sauces like ranch dressing for maximum time savings. (Or, make them ahead yourself!)
  • Choose Simple Recipes – Pick easy, all-in-one meals or pair very simple mains with basic sides.
  • Double Recipes, Then Freeze For Later – Freezing leftovers makes lazy keto diet meals come together even faster the second time around.
  • Lazy Doesn’t Always Mean “Dirty” – Dirty keto and lazy keto are not always the same thing. You can restrict your carbohydrates, make super simple meals, and eat clean foods at the same time.
  • Try Intermittent Fasting – Fasting means fewer meals to plan, and it has many benefits when paired with a lazy keto lifestyle. If this is too hard or doesn’t work with your schedule, you could also just do coffee with cream (or bulletproof coffee ) for breakfast.

Save time and stay healthy with these easy lazy keto recipes. They all come together quickly, or take minimal prep time and cook on their own! If you need even more ideas, many of my other keto dinner recipes are also quick and easy.
