Places I Visited | I went to the renowned Golkonda Fort, where I saw a wonderful Light and Sound Show that the fort's administrators had put up. Hussain Sagar Lake, and the well-run and maintained Laser Show, which is a prime example of cutting-edge science and technology, are two of my favourite things in Hyderabad. Both Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam Dams are wonderful places to visit where you can find plenty of natural beauty. We saw that Hyderabad had tremendous religious value when we went to Srisailum.

Food I Ate | Hyderabadi cuisine, in particular Biryani, was delicious and appealing to the palate in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions. If you skip the Hyderabadi biryani, your visit to Hyderabad would be incomplete.

Then in 1956, the state was divided into Telugu-speaking areas (Telangana region), merged with Andhra state, and became the capital of Andhra Pradesh and Hyderabad.

Many in Telangana have spoken and advised that the area should become a different state. All these negotiations started from the Hyderabad position. It was then split with the approval of the Indian Parliament and Telangana was formed in 2014. Hyderabad will be the capital of both states for up to 10 years to give Andhra Pradesh time to build its capital.

Hyderabad Travel Memoir and Places to visit in Hyderabad in 3 Days

In 2018, I had to travel to Hyderabad twice to get my US visa . Back then I decided against writing a Hyderabad blog.

I didn’t want to write down places to visit in Hyderabad in 3 days because Hyderabad city seemed orthodox to my free spirit. Men ogled women freely while their wives roamed around the city fully clad. Hoards of men crowded the corner shops and streets while the women were nowhere to be seen . I even saw an old Muslim man pointing to me and later telling his son my clothes (a pink short-sleeved top and three-fourth jeans) weren’t decent. Though every corner of this Nawabi town was fragrant with delicacies, we had a hard time finding vegetarian food in Hyderabad.

Then I decided against my intuition of not writing about Hyderabad places. 

As I returned from my Hyderabad, I realized Hyderabad is so much more than the conservative society rallying its heritage streets.  Hyderabad is rich with archaic domes, stone-carved mosques, vast lawns, ancient tombs, pigeons, flaky pastries, and robust fort walls. Ginger tea and ageless historic buildings can be found at every corner of Hyderabad. No doubt it is a beautiful town.

Also, men stalked me even in the artistic lanes of Paris , Pushkar , and Delhi. And I wouldn’t even get started on how crowded London tubes get.

Hyderabad was established by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591 at the banks of the Musi River to overcome the water shortage at Golconda fort. Later Hyderabad became the major trade center for pearls and diamonds as the mines of Golconda were rich with both. The lineage of the ten Qutb Shahi rulers then shifted their capital to Hyderabad. The city was won by the Mughals to be eventually lost to the British. 

The present-day Hyderabad can be divided into the historic city on the southern side of the Musi River and the New City on the northern banks. Though most of the historical places in Hyderabad are in the old city, this division is hardly visible. 

Now Hyderabad bustles like a fortress from the past equipped with modern cars and glass skyscrapers. While on one side the Charminar reminds us of Hyderabad’s Nizami heritage, on the other side cabs full of white-collared millennials rush to the Hitech city. Laad Bazaar is as popular as Mega Shopping Mall. While Golconda fort is a weekend’s delight for many, the GVK Inox isn’t forgotten. KFC might have a long queue, but Shah Ghouse Cafe is even busier.

Hyderabad is an interesting blend of modern and traditional. You can explore this city if you are ready to elbow your way through crowded streets or stand in the queue for as long as it takes. These are just battles you have to win in Hyderabad.

My Hyderabad itinerary for 3 days

Day 1 – Start your first day in Hyderabad by visiting Purani Haveli and Chowmallah Palace. Go to Charminar, Laad Bazaar, and Mecca Masjid in the evening. These are some of the most beautiful Hyderabad sites. 

Day 2 – On your second day in Hyderabad, visit the Qutb Shahi tombs, the Taramati Baradari near the tombs, Golconda Fort, and Falaknuma Palace. These places would take almost all day. 

Day 3 – On day three in Hyderabad, go to the Shilparamam handicraft center. (You can also go to Birla Mandir.) Then I suggest walking around the Charminar again and wandering in the labyrinth of Hyderabadi streets. Who knows what you might find!

Day 1 in Hyderabad

Admire the grandeur of Chowmallah Palace

Visiting Chowmallah palace could be a clichéd thing to do in Hyderabad. But we had to see the grandeur of the ruling Nizams, who lived in the Chowmallah palace from the 1700s until the partition. The Nizam kings hosted their royal guests in the palace too. Now the mansion is a public museum inaugurated by the eighth Nizam in 2005.

Chowmallah means four palaces in Urdu. The four palaces were for dance and entertainment, living, and for the best views of Hyderabad. Large fountains and lawns surround the mahals from all sides. Pigeons freely splashed around in the fountains and cats drooled over the birds.

The exotic cars of the Nizams are displayed in the palace. The museum also has glass chandeliers, weapons, porcelain, jewelry, and many more royal artifacts.

Timings: 10 am to 5 pm. Closed on Friday.

Purani Haveli

Purani Haveli (literally old mansion) was the third Nizam Sikandar Jah ’s residence until he moved to Chowmallah palace. After his move, the mansion started being called old/previous (purani) then.

Purani Haveli is a mix of both Indian and Baroque designs. The haveli has large rooms full of antique furniture,   mosaic floors, and it also hosts the Nizam’s museum.

A couple of hours are needed to fully experience this beautiful palace.

Timings: 10 am to 5 pm. Friday Closed.

Charminar and the Lad Bazaar— Best places to visit in Hyderabad in evening

We got a chance to see the Charminar on Indian Independence Day. The minar was lit with freedom lights and stood glorious in the crowd of the Lad Bazaar.

As per Wikipedia  and the “Days of the Beloved” book, Qutb Shah constructed the Charminar on the very spot where he saw his future queen the first time. While laying the foundation of Charminar in 1589, Qutub Shah, an early poet of Urdu, recited this prayer in Dakhini Urdu,

Which reads like this in English,

Charminar — literally four towers — stands on four ornate towers. Climb up one of these minarets to see the Lad bazaar and the web of streets constituting the old city of Hyderabad.

Lad Bazaar gets its name from the lacquer (literally lad) bangles sold in the market. In Lad Bazaar, you would be surrounded by embroidered clothes, colorful zari dupattas, gold, silver, and artificial jewelry, pearls, hand-stitched footwear, paintings, and colorful umbrellas. Stalls of Nizami food, sugarcane juice, fruits, chaats, and shawarmas are strewn around the market as well. 

At night, thousands of lights are lit in the market. Hundreds of people head to the market to eat, buy a pair of dazzling earrings, drink sweet and fresh sugar cane juice, or cool down with some kulfi. To each its own.

While at the Charminar, get a cup of Irani chai from the cafe behind the Charminar. Sip it while watching the old and new Hyderabad tuning into a rhythm together.

Timings: All day long. 

Tips for visiting: The bazaar is always crowded. I liked the bazaar in the evenings when the air was cooler, people were more peaceful, and lights made the place special.

Makkah Masjid or Mecca Masjid

I saw this grand mosque from the outside as only Muslim males are allowed inside.

Built by the fifth Qutb ruler Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the mosque is fitted with bricks made from Mecca soil. The soil was brought from the city of Mecca on Qutb’s order.

The arched facades carved from granite and the tall minarets make this masjid beautiful.

Places in Hyderabad for Your Day 2

Get a bird’s eye view of Hyderabad from the Golconda Fort

The fascinating part of the Golconda Fort is the three layers of walls each 17-35 feet thick. Even Aurangzeb wasn’t able to penetrate these walls. Thus Golconda is also known as the impregnable fort.

Not many people know that the famous diamond Kohinoor was mined from the Golconda region. Golconda diamonds proved lucky for the Qutub Shahis, who ruled Hyderabad up to 1687, and the Nizams, who ruled the city until the independence. Post-independence, the princely state of Hyderabad was integrated with India.

We went to the fort at 9 am to avoid the heat, but the Nawabi sun glowed us on so hard we were sweating in no time. Though the fort promises to be plastic-free, vendors freely sold small plastic bags of water.

One of the fort’s buildings was closed for renovation. We climbed up a temple and then to the canons kept at the top of the fort. One can see the shining city, Qutub tombs, the Charminar, and the sinewy walls of the forts from the top.

Fort timings: 9 am to 5.30 pm daily. A one-hour music and lights show is held at Golconda every day at 6.30 pm. The show is held in English, Hindi, and Telugu with a voice-over by Amitabh Bachchan.

Tips: The fort would be crowded on holidays, so try going on a weekday. Make sure you take water and perhaps fruits which you can enjoy in a shaded corner later. Walk at your pace and don’t miss the intricate Persian carvings that were specially made to keep the fort ventilated at all times.

Relax in the Qutub Shahi Tombs — One of the best historical monuments in Hyderabad

This might sound strange. But the Shahi Qutub tombs finally offered us a peaceful and cool shelter we were desperately searching for.

The seven tombs of the Qutb Shahi dynasty stand in the middle of a landscaped garden known as Ibrahim Bagh . The intricately carved domes shined in the golden sunlight, while pigeons flew about the domes to make the entire scene quite medieval.

The large gardens were perfect to spend a scorching Hyderabad afternoon. When we got tired of sitting in the courtyard, we walked around the dense garden. We caught butterflies, listened to the chatty parrots , and stalked the cuckoo as she sang and flitted between trees. We also found some muddy paths in between the dense foliage; if we were a bit more silent, we could have seen the family of animals that scurried away as soon as we stumbled on their path.

We spend around three to four hours in these ornamented tombs. Eating guavas and watching the sky turn orange behind the serene domes made the day even more special.

Timings: 9.30 am to 4.30 pm every day

Tips: Bring water and a picnic mat.

You can either walk from the Golconda fort to the tombs or the other way around if you want to see the music show in the fort later.

Taramati Baradari

About 4 km from Golconda Fort and 13 km from Charminar, Taramati Baradari  was constructed as a  Sarai  or a resting house for travelers in Ibrahim Bagh, our favorite tombs garden.

While many legends are connected to this arched sarai, my favorite is the one in which Abdullah Qutb Shah used to listen to Taramati, a court singer. She sang in the resthouse while the shah listened from the Golconda fort.

Go here while visiting the Qutb Shahi tombs. Taramati Baradari’s cross ventilation is known to be one of the best.

Timings: 11 am to 6 pm

Falak numa Palace

Originally the residence of the Nizam, this palace is now turned into a grand hotel by the Taj groups. The hotel isn’t open to the public.

You can book Falaknama Palace tours at the official Telangana tourism website .

Shilparamam — One of the best things to do in Hyderabad if you love handicrafts and local art

Located near the Hitec city of Hyderabad, Shilparamam village is about 9 km from Golconda fort. Similar to Dilli Haat, Shilparamam also flaunts handmade and traditional items by artisans from all over India.

When you have had enough of history and architecture, do consider taking a taxi to this village. Once at Shilparamam, eat at the local stalls and browse through handmade artifacts.

These were my best places in Hyderabad.

I also went to Hussain Sagar, for I stayed nearby the lake, but the enormous amounts of plastic thrown around the lake disappointed me.

Timings: 10:30 am to 8:30 pm

Another possible place to see in Hyderabad,

Birla Mandir

The grand Birla Mandir of Hyderabad stands on the top of a hill known as Kala pahaad. Like other Birla temples , Hyderabad Birla temple is also made of white marble.

Stories say that about 2000 tonnes of white marble were brought to build this temple. If you have seen other Birla temples and are short on time in Hyderabad, you can skip this one.

Timings: 7 am – 12 pm and from 3 – 9 pm.

Places to be visited in Hyderabad in 1 day

If you only have one day in Hyderabad, visit Golconda Fort, Qutub Shahi Tombs, stop by Taramati Baradari in the gardens there, and Chowmallah palace. Towards the end of the day, go see the Charminar and the Lad Bazaar. While walking around the Charminar you can see the Mecca masjid from outside in the evening light.

Places to visit in Hyderabad in 2 days or if you are spending a weekend in Hyderabad.

For visiting Hyderabad for two days, just follow the first two days itinerary from above.

Day 1 – Go to Purani Haveli and Chowmallah Palace during the day. See the Charminar, Laad Bazaar, and Mecca Masjid in the evening.

Day 2 – On your last day in Hyderabad, visit the Qutb Shahi tombs, the Taramati Baradari near the tombs, and Golconda Fort. 

Though Hyderabad is famous for the rich Mughlai and Nizami food, I could only taste so much as I had recently quit eating meat. Hyderabadi biryani joints and Mughlai places don’t offer much for a vegetarian.

Every time we were hungry, we had to walk for a long time. Still, we could only find chicken and mutton biryani joints or keema naan and seekh kebab kiosks. Swarms of men drank Irani chai outside shabby restaurants. Of course, we sat in some of those places, if not to eat, but to drink chai under dusty fans.

And many times we had to open the Zomato app to find a vegetarian place.

Lamakaans, near GKV Inox in Banjara Hills . (budget-friendly and good)

Lamakaans was a rustic community place that encouraged arts, theatre, social work, and entrepreneurship. Big Gulmohar trees overshadowed the cafe’s huge mud complex in which many stacks of chairs were kept; Entrepreneurs, artists, and college friends, solo or in big groups, spread the chairs and drank tea and ate samosas.

We gorged on the tasty khatti dal, aloo bonda, rice, samosa, chilly bhajji along with some nimbu pani, and tea under a tree. Prices are affordable. Food is delicious.

The Jewels of Nizam (in Golconda hotel) (Lavish and okay)

Here we enjoyed naan, khameeri roti, buttermilk, and two Mughlai sabjis while two maestros played classical tabla and sitar.

Though the prices didn’t match the service or the food, we had a comfortable time there.

Santhosh’s family Dhaba’s (Below Average)

This restaurant’s name popped up in Zomato when we looked for a vegetarian restaurant, but the place was anything but a dhaba. The methi Chaman and mushroom curries swam in golden oil. As I tilted the plate to serve the gravy to my friend, the oil dripped on my hand and the tablecloth. The toilets were broken and dirty.

GKV Inox Foodcourt (affordable and good)

On my second trip to Hyderabad, we watched two movies back-to-back and ate at the GKV Inox food court. In Hyderabad ticket prices have an upper limit. So we could finally watch some movies at an affordable price.

We ate a vegetarian uruvachari biryani, noodles, and gobhi Manchurian at the Andhra stall. The biryani was delicious, like all other Andhra food.

Chutneys, a popular South Indian joint (Affordable and good)

We ordered breakfast from there. The dosas and chutneys were delicious.

Cafes and bakeries were in abundance in Hyderabad city, but we couldn’t eat at most non-vegetarian places. Like the favorite Shah Ghouse cafe which we skipped after seeing the menu. We did eat local delicacies such as veg puff, mushroom patty, cream rolls, and potato patty at small corner bakeries.

We had our last dinner at a South Indian street food joint in Lad bazaar and drank sugarcane juice. Oh! the sweet sugarcane! Do try when in Hyderabad.

If you try to find accommodation near the must-see places in Hyderabad, you will never find a hotel. Because the places to see are scattered and so are the good hotels. I’m listing some good guest houses below.

Shobha serviced apartments – You should consider staying at Shobha apartments if you are going to Hyderabad for a US visa.

Shobha serviced apartments are right opposite the US consulate office. You can walk to the consulate via the back gate of the apartments. I stayed here twice. The breakfast was okay, but the manager and the staff were really helpful and kind. The place appears to be closed now.

Lavish properties in Hyderabad

Hotel  Hyatt Hyderabad Gachibowli – Hyatt is for those who love lavish hotels. Hyderabad Hyatt isn’t as expensive as other Hyatts. The hotel has a spa and swimming pool. Also, do check out the views from the rooms. Go here to see the pictures and decide.

Lemon Tree Hotel, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad – Lemon Tree has been reviewed highly for its customer service. The hotel has a large gym and a beautifully lit restaurant. Check out the prices of Lemon Tree on this page .

Budget-friendly accommodations in Hyderabad

Elysium Inn Backpacker – Elysium is an affordable hostel for backpackers, friends, and couples. The hostel has dorms and private rooms. The reviews suggest the staff is friendly and helpful. Go here to see the prices and book Elysium.

Slackpackr Hyderabad – Slackpackr has both dorms and private room. The reviews of the hostel are great. The guesthouse has wifi and is located in the city center. You can see the hostel’s pictures and pricing here .

What is the best time to travel in Hyderabad?

Hyderabad would be scorching in the summer season from April to September. Plan your Hyderabad visit outside these months.

Insider tips for your Hyderabad trip

• Internet was a little slow in Hyderabad.
• We had trouble finding toilet paper. So please take yours.
• Tap water in Hyderabad isn’t drinkable. I use the Lifestraw bottle that filters water on the go. Just fill from anywhere and let the filter work.
• If you are near Charminar and can’t find a toilet, go to the quaint CCD in the Lad bazaar.

Books to Read on Hyderabad,

• The Deodis of Hyderabad a Lost Heritage by Rani Sharma – In the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries, the nobles of the princely state of Hyderabad lived in palatial residences known as deodis, some 1200 of which once existed in the Old City of Hyderabad. Almost all of these traditional homes have been demolished in recent years, leaving little trace of a now vanished lifestyle. The Deodis of Hyderabad takes you on an evocative journey into the past as the author describes some of the prominent deodis and the lives of the grand nobles who lived in them. (I haven’t read this one solely because of lack of time. But this book is on my list.)
• Golconda Bagnagar Hyderabad: Rise and Fall of a Global Metropolis in Medieval India – In the 1970s when archaeologists began digging around the Golconda Fort near Hyderabad in southern India, they discovered a treasure. Buried beneath a layer of ash and debris were a distillery, Syrian wine jars, bangles, ivory chess pieces and fragments of jewellery. The archaeologists dated it to the time of the first ruler of the Golconda Kingdom Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk. The archaeological treasure dated the ash and debris to the last siege of Golconda Fort by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir in 1687. ( Though the reviews of this book are mixed, it tells a lot of history of Hyderabad. Consider this one as more of an academic or research read.)
• Heritage of Hyderabad by Madhu Vottrey – I’m currently reading this book and having a lot of fun with it. Madhu tells stories of Hyderabad in a narrative suited for children, which is why it works with most adults, too. The book comes along with activities to do in Hyderabad and also a lot of illustrations done by school children. What fun!
• Hyderabad A Memory of Taste by Mala Gole and Elizabeth Adams – This one is for food lovers. The book celebrates the heritage cuisine of Hyderabad through detailed recipes and original illustrations.

5. Birla Mandir

Hyderabad is the capital of Telangana, also known as the Pearl City of India owing to its reputation of once being the hub the diamond and pearl trading in India. Its reputation has developed since then and it is now known as one of the most important Information Technology hubs in India; HITEC City or Cyderabad is Hyderabad’s centre of modernity. There are glittering malls, sophisticated restaurants and desirable clubs located in this area that are definitely worth visiting on your trip.

The Old City is the origin of two rich Muslim Royal Houses: Qutb Shahs and Asaf Jahs whose legacy can be felt all around you as you visit Hyderabad. Birla Mandir

The Birla Mandir is one of the most popular sights in Hyderabad; this ghostly white marble construction was built in 1976 and is dedicated to a form of the Hindu God Vishnu: Venkateshwara. It is a Hindu temple that sits on Kalabahad overlooking Hussain Sagar Lake , giving you sensational views of Hyderabad city (which can make for a romantic moment at sunset). Did you know that it took 10 years to build this great structure, but it was well worth the wait! The temple is open daily from 07:00-12:00 and 13:00-21:00 and is free to visit for anyone. Salar Jung Museum

Did you know the Salar Jung Museum is the world’s largest one-man collection of antiques! This huge collection was created by Mir Yousef Ali Khan, a once grand vizier, who dedicated his life (and fortune) to collecting Asian and European arts. There are over 40 galleries housing incredible sculptures, fine art, manuscripts and all sorts of other items from the past. Some of the most famous Indian items include paintings from Raji Ravi Varma, a gold and diamond tiffin box and Aurangzeb’s sword. It is a remarkable collection that will leave you in awe, and luckily for you it is open Saturday-Thursday from 10:00-17:00 and costs ₹10 for entry and ₹50 to bring in a camera. 22-8-299-320, Darul Shifa Road, Afzalgunj, Hyderabad, Telangana, 500002, India

Ramoji Film City

Another world’s largest that resides in Hyderabad is Ramoji Film City (Tollywood) , it is the largest integrated film city in the world. This 2,000 acre complex includes many attractions including an amusement park, shows and tours of the vicinity. General admission tickets start at ₹1000 for an adult and ₹900 for a child; this includes a bus tour, funfair rides and shows. But if you’re willing to spend a bit more you can have more luxurious, VIP experiences or visit the Sahas Adventure Park; see the Ramoji Film City website for more details. Golconda Fort (aka Golkonda Fort)

This fort is considered to be one of Hyderabad’s most wondrous pieces of architecture; did you know that if you clap your hands in a particular place in the entrance, it will be heard over 1km away at the highest point of the pavilion. This fort sits on a 400ft hill and has three lines of defence; its walls range from being 17 to 34ft high and you can still see the remnants of drawbridges and a deep moat that circled the outer most wall. Entry to the Golconda Fort costs ₹5 and it is open from 09:00-17:00. There is also an exciting sound and light show at 18:30 in November to February and 19:00 in March to October; tickets for this show cost between ₹70-130. Nehru Zoological Park

Nehru Zoological Park is a zoo with a twist: there are no  thick railings between you and the animals, just an open moat. They are housed in open-air enclosures similar to those they would naturally be found it. This zoo covers over 380-acres and has over a 1000 animals from around 140 species.  This zoo is so large it really cannot be done in one day, but you can hop on the train around the park or rent your own bicycle to get around more quickly. Since it has been opened the zoo has been growing and growing and now has its own Lion Safari Park and Nocturnal Animal House. Owing to the liberal nature of the park it cannot be stressed enough that guests must be on their best behaviour, further more you will not be able to take bags in (but can leave them at the entrance). Entry into the zoo is ₹30 for adults and ₹15 for children, prices for other attractions vary, for example you can go on a train ride for ₹5-15. Often considered to be the centre piece of Hyderabad, the Charminar is a grand, majestic structure in the centre of a bustling plaza. It was built in 1591 by Sultan Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah; there are many legends around the origin of this building including the idea that the Sultan built it to honour his wife or it was built as an offering to save the city from a plague The most likely reason is that it was built to commemorate the end of the water shortage in Hyderabad and all of the problems that this brought to the city. Regardless of this origin, it is a beautiful sight to behold and a great example of Islamic architecture (with a slight hint of Hindu) and should certainly be on your to do list whilst in Hyderabad. It is open from 09:00-17:30 every day and costs ₹5 to visit. Whilst you are visiting the Charminar, you should pop next door to the Laad Bazaar , where you can shop for jewellery, trinkets, silverware, fabrics and many more interesting items. Qutb Shahi Tombs

This large cluster of 21 elegant domed tombs sits quietly near the Golconda Fort ; they are the resting place of all but the last Qutb Shahi Sultans. This burial place was also reserved for favourites of the Sultan and being buried here was an incredible honour to them and their families. When you visit the tombs you can walk around the beautifully landscaped gardens gazing at these magnificent mausoleums. Also, a visit to the exhibition at the entrance will tell you all the extra information about the Sultans and the tombs that might interest you. The tombs are open from Saturday to Thursday, 09:30-17:30, and they charge ₹10 for adult entry and ₹5 for a child. As with any Indian city Hyderabad suffers with issues of congestion, however there are many methods of transport available to you to help alleviate this problem.

Auto Rickshaw

One of the most classic and easy methods of transport used across India is the auto rickshaw. These nifty vehicles are fairly cheap and usually able to manipulate traffic a lot better than most cars. Officially fares start at ₹20 for the first 1.6km, then ₹11 for each kilometre after that. There is sometimes a surcharge between 11pm and 5am, usually around 50%. But as with anywhere most drivers are unlikely to switch on their meters, so make sure you explicitly negotiate a price, you can usually haggle it to around ₹20 for each kilometre.

By far taking a bus around Hyderabad is the cheapest method of transport. There are over 4,000 buses running very frequently within Hyderabad connecting multiple points within the city. The company that run the buses are called APSRTC and you can book tickets or find out more about the routes online.

Private Car Hire

If you are more comfortable in a car and aren’t too fussed about the traffic, then there are many places to hire a car from. Enquire with your hotel or do some exploring online; the current average price per day, for an economy car with a driver (8hours) is ₹1200.

Best Time to Visit in Hyderabad

Being in one of the Southern states of India, Hyderabad usually has a warm to hot climate. We recommend visiting in the cooler months so you are distracted by the potentially overwhelming heat of the sun. October to February are much cooler months, with some days even being overcast and cloudy; temperatures range from around 14-30°C.

If you’re not conscious of the heat then March to May could be a good time for you to visit. The tourism industry has played an important role in the economy of different countries in the last decades. Satisfaction is a final product of one’s decision making process. To access the final product everyone has to travel a long journey which includes collection of information, evaluation and taking the final product decision. This research paper is designed to give an overview of potential Cultural Heritage tourist sites in Warangal city along with contemporary developments. This Paper aims to cover the feeling and understanding of the value of the stay such as knowledge and experience gained, value of the destination, worth of each rupee spent. It also covers the decision making process in visiting tourist destination, how the tourist expectation are met out, how they feel about destination and whether they can recommend this tourist destination to their friends and relatives. An attempt has been made to assess the level of satisfaction of tourists about the destinations, which include climate, local people, tour operators, infrastructures like roads, transport, traffic, tourism information, shopping centers etc. This aspect helps the tourism planners and local governments to take strategic measures to improve the tourism business. 1. Golconda Fort

The Golconda Fort passed through three centuries of dynasties before falling in the hands of the Qutb Shahis in the 16 th century who established it as their citadel atop a 120-m –high granite hill surrounded by massive ramparts and ringed by fortifications which are 11km in the perimeter. The Qutb Shahis moved to Hyderabad in 1591 but the fort remained in use as their citadel till 1687 when it was claimed by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

From the summit, you can watch the beauty of the dusty foothills and look out over the horizon into the city in the distance.

You should allow yourself at least a couple of hours to explore the fort. Guides are available who charge around 6000 INR per 90 minutes. Small booklets that cost 20 INR are also available.

How to reach: Golconda is about 10 km from Charminar so an Uber or Ola cab rides are a convenient way to get there from the city.

2. The Charminar

One of the major attractions in Hyderabad, Charminar or literally the four towers is the monument defines the city. That was the idea too when it was built in 1591 by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah as the beacon in the city after the end of an epidemic caused by the shortage of water in Golconda. Charminar was built as a mosque and the 56m –the high structure has four arches with four minarets atop each which gives it its name. Today the Charminar stands in the middle of Hyderabad’s main bazaar where traffic and crowds keep moving around the structure making it a very busy place. Nevertheless, there is no denying its charm and while you’re there don’t forget to check out the best of Hyderabadi street food near the Charminar. Also, check out Lad Bazaar, Hyderabad’s famous market for bangles right next to the Charminar.

3. Mecca Masjid

One of the world’s largest mosques where 10,000 men can pray at a time, the Mecca Masjid is also one of the oldest buildings of Hyderabad. The mosque was built in 1617 by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, the city’s founder. The masjid gets its name from the rocks that were transported from Mecca in Saudi Arabia to build it. Keep in mind that women are not allowed into the main prayer hall and some women will not be allowed into the premises if they are deemed to be dressed inappropriately.

Adjacent to the courtyard of the mosque are the tombs of many of the Hyderabad Nizams.

4. Qutb Shahi Tombs

Sightseeing in Hyderabad will be incomplete without visiting this place. The Qutb Shahi Tombs are a combination of 23 mosques, 40 mausoleums, a hammam and several pavilions dating from the times of the Qutb Shahi dynasty which are currently being renovated as part of a renovation plan by the Indian government. Seven of the eight Qutb Shahi rulers have their final resting places here under beautiful domed granite roofs.

One of the finest tombs here is that of Mohammed Qutb Quli Shah, the founder of Hyderabad. There are other tombs here as well belonging to courtesans, physicians and nobility. Helpful information about the place can be gathered at an exhibition near the entrance. The tombs are near Golconda fort and best accessed by Autorickshaws or Ola/Uber cabs.

5. Hussain Sagar Lake

The twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad have had this necklace adorning them since 1562. The necklace called Hussain Sagar Lake , one of the largest manmade lakes in India , is one of the best places to visit places to visit in Hyderabad for couples and even with family.  Sit on the shore line of the lake, savour delicacies from the food court on its periphery or enjoy a boat ride in the lake. 7. Salar Jung Museum

One of the three national museums of India , Salar Jung museum houses the treasures accumulated by Mir Yousuf Ali Kahn (Salar Jung III). The Salar Jung Museum is a treasure trove for any art lover and contains sculptures, paintings, carvings, artefacts and more from across the world. A sculpture of note here is the Veiled Rebecca by 19 th -century Italian sculptor Benzoni.

8. Chowmahalla Palace

As the name suggests, Chowmahalla Palace was a palace of the Nizams of Hyderabad and is characterised by its opulence. Stately buildings and eye-catching garden courtyards. The most arresting out of all the places here is the Khilwat Mubarak, a magnificent hall where the Nizams held ceremonies under 19 gigantic chandeliers of Belgian crystal.  The place quarters are strewn with priceless historical exhibits ranging from arts and crafts, personal possessions such as hand-written Qurans, royal wedding outfits and old photographs. Do not forget to check out the collection of vintage cars and carriages of the different Nizams including such beauties as a 1911 yellow Rolls Royce and 1937 Buick convertible.

This place is considered one of the most underrated places in Hyderabad, but once you visit it, you would love to go there again. This is supposedly the only car museum in the entire world which houses quirky handmade cars for presentation. Various models and forms of vintage cars are presented to the visitors. You can visit alone or with your family to teach them about the various types of cars and have an enjoyable day out with kids too.

How to reach : It is near the Zoo Park and Chowmahalla Palace, so getting a local vehicle is the easiest.

9. Paigah Tombs

The Paigahs are said to be descendants of the second Caliph of Islam and were staunch loyalists of the Nizam household and served as generals and states people under the Nizams. 4km in the southeast from Charminar lies the Paigah Tombs . 27 carved marble tombs are found in a small compound. The tombs are made of marble and lime stucco. If you’re at the Charminar you could do well to give this place a quick visit.

10. Birla Mandir

The most modern building in this list of places to visit in Hyderabad, Birla Mandir is a temple made out of marble in 1976 and is situated on Kalapahad (black mountain), one of two rocky hills that overlooks the Hussain Sagar lake. It is popular among Hindu tourists and has a very calm atmosphere. Scenes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana are engraved on the marble and the inner sanctum here has a replica statue of the Tirupati Venkateswara.

12. Nehru Zoological Park

The Nehru Zoological Park has couple of firsts to its name. It has India’s first butterfly park and this is also the first park where jungle safari was started. The 50-yr-old park has over 380 acres of land that is a mix of home for animals and birds, research facilities and ecological programmes.

There is a lot here for visitors to entertain themselves for a day. Facilities such as toy train, bicycles for hire and boating are available so that there is an environment for a complete family outing.

14. Chilkur Balaji Temple

Fondly known as the Visa Balaji Temple by the local people, Chilkoor Balaji Temple is an ancient Hindu temple is dedicated to Lord Balaji. Situated in the village of Chilkur, it is a small picturesque place in Hyderabad, located on the banks of the Osman River. It is rumoured that if you wish to go overseas and you want your visa to get processed, this temple has special powers to fulfil your wishes and this is the story behind the local name of the temple. It is one of the fewest temples in India without a donation box or hundi.

15. Hatiyan Ka Jhad

The biggest Baobab tree in India, locally called as the Hatiyan ka Jhad, is a 430-year-old Baobab tree, which means ‘elephant sized tree’. It has a hollow trunk and has a  girth of 25 metres. There is a famous legend related to this tree which tells the tale of 40 thieves that hid inside this tree to hide from the royal family. Following the origin of this tree, there are two stories, the first one states that it was a gift to Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah by the Arab traders. The second story suggests that it was brought and planted by wandering nomads when they visited Golconda.

16. Taj Falaknuma Palace

Another architectural marvel of Hyderabad is the Taj Falaknuma Palace , constructed by the Paigah Family in late 1800s. It is a stunning piece of architecture with Italian marble and stained-glass windows, and the palace spreads over a sprawling 1,011,500 square feet. It is now owned by the Taj Group and the luxury hotel is now accessible for the guests and visitors. Spacious and beautifully furnished rooms along with modern facilities promise you a memorable stay here. The grounds are well-manicured and lush green.

17. Yadagirigutta Temple

This temple is also known as the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Temple and is dedicated to Lord Narasimha. It is situated 62 kilometres away from Hyderabad. The temple is lofty and intricately carved with various mythological and religious figurines and the combination of colours used is also magnificent.

18. Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens feature more than 600 different species of plants. The garden boasts of dense flora with some smartly designed spaces for walking and jogging. Once the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi is now declared as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This place boasts of ancient temple ruins and a rocky terrain made of granite boulders that look straight out of an adventure book! It is a prime destination for rock climbers and archaeologists. You will also come across proper roads, water tanks, a public square, community kitchen, elephant stables and monasteries, which show how advanced the ancient infrastructure was. Apart from quite a few Hindu temples, Hampi is home to some Jain temples as well as a Muslim mosque. A medley of Indian and Islamic styles of architecture is apparent here. You should check out the Hampi Bazaar as well. The Daroji Bear Sanctuary is very close to Hampi. It is situated 377 kilometres away from Hyderabad.

20. Ananthagiri Hills

Situated 90 kilometres away from the city of Hyderabad, this dense forest is the birthplace of the river Musi. Ananthagiri Hills has a temple known as the Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple and a picturesque lake known as the Nagasamudram Lake. It hosts caves that were the earliest human habitats in South India. 21. Medak Fort

It was built by the Kakatiyas over 800 years ago and is perched on a hilltop. This 12th-century masterpiece was built to celebrate the glorious Kakatiyan reign during their golden era. 22. Jal Vihar

Jalavihar , situated on the Necklace Road Hyderabad, is a popular amusement park. It is very near to the IMAX multiplex and Sanjeevaiah Park which is also situated on the Necklace Road. Jalvihar is a family entertainment park having various rides for both adults and children.

There are a wide range of water games as well as dry rides for both adults and kids. Games such as family slide, Mini aqua trailers, Tilt bucket, Mushroom Umbrella, Float slide and Pendulum are just a few of them to name and will keep you entertained as well as provide fun throughout the day at Jalavihar.

Spend your time at the wave pool for relaxing and unwinding. Dance at the Rain Dance to the tune of chartbuster songs, while water is sprayed on you from all the sides simulating rain drops, enjoy with your kids and other family members & friends. There are many rides specially designed for kids.

23. Lumbini Park

Lumbini Park Hyderabad was developed by the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority in the year of 1994. A perfect place for relaxation and amusement, Lumbini Park has been named after the birthplace of Siddhartha who later came to be known as Lord Buddha. The park is part of the Buddha Purnima project of Hyderabad Urban Development Authority. This park was renamed as the T. Anjaiah Lumbini Park in the year of 2006. However, it is still popularly known as Lumbini Park.

Situated quite close to the famous standing statue of Lord Buddha and Hussain Sagar Lake, the largest artificial lake of Asia, the Lumbini Park is worth visiting. It is quite popular among kids as there are fun rides here. It is more like a mini entertainment park situated right in the middle of the city, next to a beautiful lake.

One of the main attractions of the Lumbini Park is the giant clock at the entrance of the park which has been designed using various kinds of colorful flowering plants. Along with seasonal flowering plants, wide variety of cacti and rocks, the park also has many means to keep kids entertained. The Musical fountain and water cascades are iconic attractions. The sight of the water screen, made by water shooting up the sky, where the history of Hyderabad is projected, is something not many of us have seen before. It is an experience in itself. The best part of laser show is that it used 3D technology. You will witness a city created in 3D right at a park.

Musical fountain and the laser show at the Lumbini Park is something which you cannot afford to miss. The timing of the musical fountain is from 6.30 P.M. and 8 P.M. As for the Lumbini park laser show timings, it is screened twice, at 7.15 pm and again at 8.30 pm.

From the park, one can also enjoy boating at the Hussain Sagar Lake and see the Buddha Statue in the middle of the lake. For boating there are two choices available for the visitors. If interested, you can hire a speed boat at Lumbini park and enjoy an exciting ride in the lake. You will be offered life-jackets, so that safety is not compromised with. The other option is the ferry ride, which takes tourists to the massive statue of Lord Buddha in the middle of the Hussain Sagar Lake.

24. Purani Haveli

Purani Haveli in Hyderabad is located at the South East of Afzal Gunj Bridge near Dewan Devdi. It is a U shaped complex with a single storied central building designed in European style. It was originally established as the residential quarters of Mir Momen, the Peshwa of Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah around the 16th century.

Purani Haveli , one of the popular tourist spots in Hyderabad, was later acquired by Asaf Jah II, the second Nizam of Hyderabad in the 18th century. He renovated the palace and designated the same to his son Sikandar Jah, the third Nizam of Hyderabad. Later Shikandar Jah moved to the Khilaurat complex. From then on, the place has been popularly known as  Purani Haveli , which literally means ‘Old Palace’. In 19th century, the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, Nawab Mir Mahboob Ali Khan Siddiqi again converted this place as his official residence. It was then that the glory and grandeur of the yesteryears was returned to Purani Haveli.

Purani Haveli is known for its captivating combination of 18th century European facades and traditional Indian courtyards. It depicts a picture of how the city of Hyderabad was in 18th century.

The main building of Purani Haveli showcases 18th century European architecture which can be seen in its antique furniture and intricate interior decorations. As you take a tour of the entire haveli, you can see vast courtyards surrounded with rooms and deep verandas which have semicircular European arches. It is a U shaped complex. In its centre, there is a single storied building which is the main royal palace. The courtyard showcases an Indian style. Both the architectural style seems to complement each other. Although with time, the structure is losing its original grandness, few of the rooms in the haveli still boasts of colorful tiled walls and mosaic flooring which are almost intact.

There are beautiful courtyards in both the wings with rooms around them. Some of the rooms still have the mosaic flooring and tiled walls with their colors still looking afresh.

The western wing houses the wardrobe that is said to be longest in the world, which has been made in two levels along with a wooden elevator. It is said that it has the capacity to hang about 730 pairs of royal attires.

Currently, the haveli houses the Nizam’s Museum displaying various artifacts of the last Nizam of Hyderabad. Some of these are souvenirs and mementos given by the different dignitaries of the world to the last Nizam along with a 1930 Rolls-Royce, a Packard, and a Jaguar Mark V. There is also a library and Mukarram Jah Technical Institute inside the complex.

You can visit the haveli throughout the week except on Fridays. The visit timings are from 10:30 AM to 5 PM. The entry fee for Purani haveli is Rs. 80 per person for adults and Rs. 15 per person for children. Fee for camera may vary from Rs.150 to Rs. 500.

25. Snow World

Snow World has been Developed and conceptualized by Ocean Park Multi Tech Limited (OPML) and recognized as the first snow-themed park of the country. Spread across an area of 17,000 square feet, Snow World is the biggest snow themed park in the world. It is situated at the Lower Tank Bund Road, behind the Indira Park; Snow World is also one of the interesting tourist spots of Hyderabad and is quite close to Hussain Sagar Lake as well.

It is a perfect spot to beat the scorching summer heat. Snow World offers entertainment for each and everyone. You can experience playing with snow and hurling snow at each other without having to travel to any hill station. All this is possible at the Snow World.

The temperature inside varies from 0 to 5 degree Celsius. You can experience the view of a snow clad hill station with snow falling from above and amazing landscapes. Adventurous sports like trekking up the slope makes your visit all the more exciting. The other activities that one can engage in Snow World are ice skating, ice boarding, snow slides with bumping-car, toboggan rides, etc.

Games like Snow volley Ball, Snow Merry-Go-Round, snow basket ball, Snow Dancing are quite popular here. You will also find Snow sculptures and Snow Mountain. There is also a Cryo Zone which showcases a natural snowscape consisted of igloos, alpine trees along with simulated polar bears and penguins. In the cryo zone, there is a special snow play area for children. There are many interesting rides for kids to enjoy.

While enjoying at the Snow World Hyderabad, it is advisable to keep some safety measure in mind. For instance, as some of the snow covered area inside might be slippery, it is better to walk slowly. Before choosing your rides know about them completely and also consider your health before taking the rides. One snow session at Snow World lasts for one hour. You are required to arrive at the venue half an hour before the session starts.

26. Laad Bazaar

Laad Bazaar ;is located quite close to the Charminar one of the most popular tourist spots of Hyderabad. The Laad Bazaar is adjacent to the Charminar and is spread on the four roads starting from Charminar. The Bazaar covers an area of one kilometer.

Charminar has been known for bangles and various other traditional items since the eras of the Nizams and the Laad Bazaar here still presents a glimpse of the bygone eras. It is said that the market has been in existence here since the Qutub Shahis and the Nizams era and thus represents the living heritage of the city.

The name “Laad Bazaar” has its origin from the word “laad” meaning lacquer. Lacquer is one of the important materials used to make bangles; these vibrant color, sparkling ‘lac’ bangles are very popular among visitors to this place.

Out of the many legends associated with this historical market, one legend says that the origin of Laad Bazaar dates back to Ladli Begum, the wife of the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Mehboob Ali Khan. There is another story which traces its origin to Abdur Razzaq Laary, Golconda Army General, and ‘Laary Bazaar’ was named after him, which later became Laad bazaar. The other legend attributes the name to Lord Rippon for whom the name ‘Lord Bazaar’ was coined, which eventually was corrupted to be colloquially pronounced as ‘Laad Bazaar’. For whatever reason the place derives its name, the charm of Laad bazaar is incomprehensible for anyone who has not been here.

Besides a wide range of colorful bangles, the market has to offer to customer sarees with zari embroidery works, other traditional clothing and semi-precious stones to buy and take back home. Pearls sold at Laad bazaar are equally famous as well under the name of Hyderabad Pearls. The Laad Bazaar allows bargaining for each and every item of your liking. It gives you a different feeling of accomplishment to buy the items at your bargained price. It is not only the bangles that most people visit this place for; this age old market is like a never ending fair. From mouth-watering variety of eatables to jeweler shops; shops for bridal wear to sequined skirts and bags; ‘Hyderabadi Pearls’ to junk jewellery; this place offers almost everything.

The shops here at Laad Bazaar open only after mid-morning. It is when you find shopkeepers opening and arranging the items in and around their shop. Although the Laad Bazaar, Hyderabad timings are from 11 in morning till 10.30 in night, the best time to go is by evening. You can visit Charminar and enjoy the view from its top and then begin your shopping at the glittering Chudi (Bangle) bazaar here.

Laad Bazaar is located between Charminar and Chowmahalla Palace. The bazaar witnesses an approximate foot fall of 500-600 foreign tourists every day. It is a popular tourist spot among both national and international tourists. Once at the bazaar, you are supposed to walk on foot as vehicles are not permitted inside the bazaar, owing to the crowd.

27. Durgam Cheruvu

Situated quite close to the Hi-tech City, Durgam Cheruvu is one of the popular sightseeing places of Hyderabad. The lake is also known as the ‘Secret Lake’ may be because of the fact that it is hidden by the surrounding granite rocks. The rock formations surrounding the lake are spread across an area of 63 acres and are said to be approximately 2500 million years old.

Currently it has been developed into a hangout place where people come and spend some time in a relaxed environment by the side of a calm water body. Durgam Cheruvu has an artificial waterfall and floating fountain as attractions for most visitors. The place provides a different level of calmness in the form of lake and rocks, as compared to the concrete buildings of offices and a shopping mall.

It is said that the lake was used as the source of drinking water for the Golconda Fort. Also called by the name of ‘Madhapur Lake’, Durgam Cheruvu promises some refreshing moments to each and everyone visiting this place.

Owing to its scenic beauty and unique location, it is a common venue for film shootings. Durgam Cheruvu Lake is surrounded by granite rocks, which is said to be a rare not just in India but all over Asia as well. Once at the lake, you can try out engaging in various kinds of interesting activities. The place has the facilities available for boating, camping as well as trekking. It is also an ideal place for nature lovers; who can spend time amid the beautiful creations of nature right in the city. It is open on all days, from Monday to Sunday. Timings for Durgam Cheruvu are from 10 am to 6.30 pm.

28. Shilparamam

Shilparamam Hyderabad is located at a distance of 14 km from the heart of Hyderabad city, Shilparamam is a craft village show-casing various traditional arts and crafts by artisans from all over the country. A perfect place for art lovers, Shilparamam is one of the popular tourist spots in Hyderabad.

Spread across an area of 50 acres, Shilparamam not only showcases various artifacts and traditionally made handicrafts but is also home for various performing artists. In its complete form, the complex of Shilparamam is supposed to have Crafts Museum, Cultural Museum, Art Gallery & Library, Multi-purpose Auditorium, Common Facility Workshops and Research & Design Centre along with accommodation facilities for artists and visitors.

This is an ideal place for long walks too; its natural greenery dotted with carefully laid out sculptures and intricately designed buildings provide solace to the visitors here. There is also the facility of battery operated car which takes you for an enchanting tour of Shilparamam against a minimal charge.

Shopping at Shilparamam is common not just with residents of Hyderabad but also among tourists. Craftsmen from all over India, display their works here, starting from traditional jewellery, hand-woven saris, shawls, dresses, bed sheets, etc; and hand-crafted wooden and metal wares. During Sankranti Sandadi, festival of harvest in the month of January and ten days of Dussehra in the month of October, various cultural activities are organized. Along with these, Kite Festival, Navarathri, South India Festival, Ugadi, Annual Crafts Festival are also celebrated in traditional ways at Shilparamam. One can visit Shilparamam at any time of the year, but visiting during festivals will definitely add different attractions to your visit.

29. Gandipet Lake

Hyderabad is not just famous for forts and palaces as sightseeing places, but Gardens, waterfalls and lakes such as Gandipet Lake , with a beautiful touch of nature around the city of Hyderabad, is equally famous as a sightseeing destination. Also known as Osman Sagar, Gandipet Lake is spread across an area of 46 Km.

Osman Sagar Lake has been named after the late seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan who, in 1920 built a Dam over the lake to protect the city from flooding. The Dam is the main reservoir for the twin cities – Hyderabad and Secunderabad and now one of the main sources of drinking water for both the cities.

The lake has amazing scenic surroundings. The sunset and sunrise at the lake are simply mesmerizing. Osman Sagar, Gandipet, is often visited by families and those who are looking for spending some peaceful moment, away from busy city life. It is one of the popular places to visit in Hyderabad for one day. Visitors to the lake can cary their own food, however there is also a cafeteria here which serves food.

The lake has boating facility among beautiful surroundings. The best time to visit the lake is during months of October to March, when the climate is much cooler.

Overnight stay can be planned in the guest house named Sagar Mahal by Andhra Pradesh Tourism, which offers decent stay by the side of serene lake. This guest house, Sagar Mahal, in Gandipet was once the summer resort of Nizams. Some portion of this mahal has been now open to public; there are about 10 double rooms for accommodation. Telangana Tourism announces “Hyderabad to Arunachalam” spiritual package for summer tourism

Hyderabad residents can now embark on a spiritual retreat with a three-day tour scheduled for specific dates in April, May, and June.

Hyderabad: Telangana Tourism has announced a special package titled “Hyderabad to Arunachalam” for the public ahead of the summer tourism peak. Hyderabad residents can now embark on a spiritual retreat with a three-day tour scheduled for specific dates in April, May, and June. Priced at Rs 7,500 for adults and Rs 6,000 for children, the tour guarantees a peaceful journey starting from CRO Basheerbagh at 6:30 pm.

Day one of the tour commences with an early morning arrival at Kanipakam, providing an hour for refreshments and check-out, followed by a visit to Kanipakam Temple (darshan not included). The journey then progresses to Thiruvanamalai, with a lunch break and leisure time at TTDC Aalayam Hotel before exploring the Arunachaleswara Temple in the evening (darshan not included). The day concludes with dinner and an overnight stay at TTDC Aalayam Hotel.

On day two, after breakfast and check-out, the tour proceeds to Sripuram Golden Vehicle in Vellore, including lunch and a visit to the Sripuram Golden Temple (darshan not included). The return journey to Hyderabad commences in the late afternoon with dinner en-route.

The three-day tour provides twin-sharing accommodation and transportation. According to the tourism department, the package excludes expenses for darshan (temple visits) and meals, except those explicitly mentioned.
