Trump says he is 'entitled' to personally attack Kamala Harris as his allies beg him to focus on her policies

  • Former President Donald Trump defended his personal attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris.
  • Trump said he is "entitled" to such barbs, even though his allies have urged him to temper them.
  • He has defended his approach even as Harris has gained ground.

Insider Today

Former President Donald Trump on Thursday defended his attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris even as his top allies begged him to stay on message amid Harris' surging popularity.

"I think I'm entitled to personal attacks," Trump said in response to a question that mentioned some of his allies' uneasiness. "I don't have a lot of respect for her. I don't have a lot of respect for her intelligence, and I think she'll be a terrible president. And I think it's very important that we win and whether the personal attacks are good, bad — I mean she, certainly attacks me personally, she called me weird."

Trump's defense came during a meandering news conference that appeared to be set to focus primarily on the economy. The former president spoke for roughly an hour before beginning to take questions from reporters.

Asked what his message was to Americans struggling with credit card debt, Trump said, "My message to them would be very simple: vote for Trump and we're going to fix the problem. We're going to get it fixed. We'll get it fixed."

In recent days, former Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway and other leading Republicans have urged the former president to focus more on Harris' policies and past positions over attacks on her intelligence and other areas.

"The winning formula for President Trump is very plain to see," Conway told Fox Business host Larry Kudlow, who served in Trump's administration as Director of the National Economic Council. "It's fewer insults, more insights, and that policy contrast."

Related stories

Harris' campaign seemed almost giddy at the prospect that Trump was holding another news conference. She has not held an extended news conference since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee.

"We aren't sure what we just watched and neither is America," the Harris campaign said in a statement. "From his member-only golf club, Donald Trump tried to read some paper for more than 40 minutes, while giving a stream of not-much-consciousness. It was quite boring. Networks cut from his speech (except Fox, he has Dominion over them). Then, he took some questions. It did not get better."

On Wednesday, during a speech in North Carolina, billed to be about the economy, Trump began by mocking Harris' laugh.

Earlier this month, Trump questioned whether Harris was truly Black in front of a room of Black journalists, an example of how he has reverted to form in stepping on his message. He also repeatedly attacked Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp , even though Kemp has supported him and tried to turn the page from the 2020 election. Polls show that Harris has gained ground as Trump stumbles.

On Thursday, Trump's campaign announced that Corey Lewandowski, the first of three campaign managers on Trump's 2016 campaign, would join the 2024 run in some capacity. Asked about whether the announcement signaled a shake-up, Trump said that his approach remains the same.

"I think it's a sign of we want to close it out," Trump said.

Paris, Uncharacteristically Giddy, Bids Au Revoir to the Olympics

A joyous Games, a cleaned-up Seine and improvements to the region brought cheer to Parisians as they handed off the Summer Olympics to Los Angeles.

By Catherine Porter

Reporting from St.-Denis, France

There were French firemen flipping like acrobats, a musician playing a piano that hung vertically in the air, and Olympic athletes overwhelming the stage and forming a mosh pit around the French electro-pop band Phoenix.

The Paris Olympics ended much as they began, with a raucous spectacle before a joyous crowd, a generous supply of strobe lights, smoke and fireworks. And then the actor Tom Cruise rappelled off the stadium roof to collect the Olympic flag from the gymnast Simone Biles and carry it off on his motorcycle, à la “Top Gun” and “Mission: Impossible” to Los Angeles, where the next summer Olympics is set to take place in 2028.

“Together, we have experienced the Games like nothing we have ever lived before,” said Tony Estanguet, the president of the Paris Olympics organizing committee, adding that of all the records broken, among them was one for marriage proposals. “From one day to the next, time stood still and a whole country got goose bumps.”

As Paris bids au revoir to the Olympic Games, many are reluctant to let go of its magic: of the adrenaline-fueled excitement, of the party free of political debate, of the sense of time deliciously suspended, like the glowing Olympic cauldron that has hovered wistfully over the city every night.

From the beginning, the promise was that the Games would offer more than a hedonistic 17-day escape. The Olympics would be green, low-budget and offer lasting improvements to the lives of citizens — particularly in the poor suburbs of Seine-St.-Denis , which hosted dozens of events, the athletes’ village and Sunday’s closing ceremony.

The final accounting on all fronts will take months, if not years. But already, perhaps gripped by the euphoria of the Games, many erstwhile critics admit to already seeing improvements. The famous French cynicism has given way to an unusual optimism.

“I’m so happy to see this,” said Suzie Raveleau, 34, who joined the crowd lining the bank along the Seine one morning this week to witness something she never thought she’d see in her lifetime: swimmers splashing in the water below.

“Everyone thought it was not possible, right up till two weeks ago,” she said.

When asked if she would get into the murky brown water herself next summer, her answer was swift: “Yes. I’d love to. I love swimming.”

Cleaning the Seine enough to permit Olympic swimming events will be the biggest, and potentially most lasting, legacy of the Games. The gargantuan engineering project and sensitive human relations job cost $1.5 billion, an investment that few things but an Olympics could inspire.

The results were not seamless, of course. A handful of familiarization swims during the Games and one day of competition were postponed because of poor water quality, and some athletes reported suffering from stomach ailments after their time in the river, fueling skepticism that the cleanup might not have been as thorough as required.

But the authorities published the clean results of water tests and have promised that they will open public swimming spots next summer not only in Paris but also upstream and, eventually, with more work already budgeted, downstream — something forbidden in the river for more than a century.

“For years, the Seine was considered almost a sewer, so reconquering and cleaning it seemed impossible to many,” Mayor Anne Hidalgo of Paris said gleefully after watching the first triathletes dive in at the Olympics. She added: “Now we can say, we can do things that seem extraordinary.”

Cleaning the Seine was the most symbolic part of Paris’ promise to massively green the Games , cutting carbon emissions and plastic use in half from past events.

The legacy of some of those decisions are already paying results. All the Olympic sites were connected to the country’s electrical grid, including stadiums which traditionally run off highly-polluting diesel generators, and the government has promised to help finance similar work for 300 other stadiums across the country, said Georgina Grenon, who led Paris 2024’s environmental efforts. Almost 100 miles of bike lanes were created, connecting Olympic sites across the city and the suburbs, as well as many new bike parking spaces — 10,000 of which will remain.

“I expected it to be a catastrophe,” said Alexia Côte, 27, a medical resident who biked to the city’s most packed fan zone, where Parisians roared themselves hoarse cheering for the swimming sensation Léon Marchand . “Cycling in Paris right now is fantastic.”

While visitors focused on the beauty of Olympic sites set in Instagram-perfect Paris, the most lasting benefits of the Games will be felt by Seine-St.-Denis, the sprawling and less photogenic suburb that is synonymous in France with poverty, immigration and crime.

One of only two permanent sports buildings erected for the Games rises here — the gorgeous aquatic center, where divers twisted elegantly from towers and springboards into the water. Next year, it is scheduled to open as a community center.

The athletes’ village was also built here. Once the athletes leave, its 40 buildings will become home to some 6,000 people, as many as one-quarter in social housing units.

Myriad smaller Olympic additions have already begun to transform the lives of locals — from newly renovated stadiums and pools, to new bridges opening isolated neighborhoods for development, to a new subway station that opened shortly before the Games began.

Nearby, a towering new hotel promises to be the first of many. The Olympics funded the decontamination of former industrial lands, which will be transformed into a new neighborhood and entertainment zone, with many hotels and restaurants, said Mayor Mathieu Hanotin of St.-Denis.

“We have often been caricatured and put down, and we wanted to demonstrate that we are a welcoming city,” said Mr. Hanotin, before dashing to see 100-meter men’s relay qualifiers in the packed Stade de France across from his office. “That we have fun in St.-Denis. We know how to do things, but on top of that, we are kind.”

The Olympic boost offered not just new jobs, but a new reputation, he said, repeating one word like a mantra — pride.

Over the past two weeks, Seine-St.-Denis has thronged with the same Olympic enthusiasm as the capital, its packed fan zones drawing locals and tourists alike.

“It feels like we’re really in France, you know?” said Mounia Ben Keddache, who had brought her two young daughters to a park where kids scampered up a climbing wall, played table tennis and tried on boxing gloves to wallop an inflatable punching bag. “Before, it did not feel like that.”

Many locals spoke glowingly about how clean their streets suddenly were, how friendly the police were and how the officers’ increased presence had driven out drug dealers and pickpockets, making them feel safer. But the party was ending, the athletes waving goodbye and the tourists packing dirty laundry into their suitcases and heading home.

A vision of Billie Eilish hauntingly singing “don’t want to say goodbye” from Long Beach, Calif., in a pretaped segment offered a taste of the hangover that was to come. What would remain?

The answer, for many French, was uncharacteristically optimistic.

“There is going to be a legacy,” said Mohamed Chebli, 38, having a smoke break outside his pizza joint near the new Pleyel subway station. “It’s a good start.”

Miami Defeats Washington 13-6; Tagovailoa Perfect On Only Drive

Scott salomon | aug 17, 2024.

Aug 17, 2024; Miami Gardens, Florida, USA; Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (1) runs on the field after passing the football against the Washington Commanders during the first quarter of a preseason game at Hard Rock Stadium.

  • Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins scored their only touchdown on their game's opening drive. That touchdown would stand up Saturday night as they defeated the Washington Commanders 13-6 at Hard Rock Stadium.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa started the game and led the team down the field on their first drive for their only touchdown. His perfect 13-yard scoring strike to River Cracraft in the back right corner of the end zone set the tone for the game.

"I wanted to give Tua an opportunity to make a play, and River Cracraft had a great release," McDaniel said. "He really made a good catch in the end zone."

Tagovailoa then exited the game and sat back on the bench. He finished his night perfectly by going 5-for-5, passing for 51 yards, and scoring. He then yielded to Skylar Thompson, who had a rough go of it as he was 8-of-15 for 61 yards.

"We executed the way we wanted to and did what we said we were going to do," Tagovailoa said. "This is the third year that I have been able to compete with River and this is the best training camp he has had. The mental strength that he comes out with every day, I just think that is where his growth has come from."

Tagovailoa did not have Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle in the huddle, as they did not play. The running backs were Raheem Mostert, De'Von Achane and Chris Brooks.

Mike White came in the second half and did not do much better than Thompson. He was 11-of-20 for 116 yards, but 35 of them came on one pass to Erik Ezukanma. Ezukanma would finish the night with five receptions for 65 yards. He led the team in receiving.

Brooks ran hard until he left the game with an injury in the first half. He had 63 yards on five carries but ripped a long 59-yard run to put Miami in position for the first of two Jason Sanders field goals.

"There was a good amount of injuries on both sides," McDaniel said. "However, I did not get any updates that you would hate to hear. You just don't want to see anybody go down."

Anthony Weaver had the young players he's been evaluating lead the defense. Cam Smith saw his first preseason action and played well before leaving the game with a lower extremity injury. He finished the game with four tackles, three of which were unassisted.

First-round pick Chop Robinson had a tackle for loss in the first quarter, while fifth-round selection Mo Kamara had a quarterback sack.

Robinson was downright giddy after the game. He got ribbed by Jaelan Phillips for not doing the Chop dance.

"It's like a dream come true. I was just having fun," Robinson said. "When I went to the sidelines I told JP I was too excited to celebrate."

For the second straight game, Channing Tindall had a quarterback sack. He sacked third-team quarterback Tracy McSorley in the game's closing minutes.

Washington was driving to score the game-tying touchdown and had a third-and-10 at the Dolphins' 11-yard line. They knocked on the door and got to the 7-yard line, but they got no further. Miami took over on downs.

Miami improved to 2-0 on the preseason, while Washington fell to 0-2. The Dolphins will travel to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers in their final preseason tune-up next Friday night. Kickoff is at 7:30 PM EDT.

Emmerdale’s Paula Lane breaks silence on Ella’s surprise love interest – and it would destroy lives

Ella Forster in front of the Emmerdale village

Emmerdale’s Paula Lane has somewhat fuelled the fan theory Ella Forster (Paula Lane) and Cain Dingle ( Jeff Hordley ) are going to start an affair.

When Ella’s secret about her past and being a child killer was exposed, she found a friend in Cain.

Cain is the father of Kyle Winchester (Huey Quinn), who shot Al Chapman dead after walking in on the two men fighting. While Cain being in Ella’s corner was unexpected, it certainly wasn’t a great surprise, given he knows a little about what she’s gone through.

Ella was then thrown out of the village by Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) and told to never return. In recent weeks though, Ella came back to the Dales looking for items she had left at Tenants.

She intended on popping back briefly, not wanting to get spotted by any residents, but her visit turned into something longer thanks to being involved in a car crash, and then sadly suffering what is known as an anembryonic pregnancy.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

While Ella tries to settle back into village life she will certainly need some friends in her corner. With one of them being Cain Dingle, it has left many fans of the ITV soap wondering where things could go, given his ongoing relationship issues with Moira (Natalie J Robb).

Reflecting on this, Paula Lane recently told us: ‘It did flash up on my phone about her and Cain. And when I did film that very intense scene, even I went “Ooh, what’s going to get picked up here?” I think it’s just speculation, but I kind of joked previously you always like a bad boy, because they can take you to different places and things. So we’ll see. There’s nothing been said on that front.

‘But to be honest, there are not that many people – I have gone through it in my head and thought maybe she’ll go with Michelle Hardwick. Vanessa, maybe she’ll end up going the other way.’

Moira Dingle and Cain Dingle argue at Butlers in Emmerdale

‘Yeah, most people didn’t see that one coming!’, Paula said, reflecting on the reaction from fans when Ella’s secret was revealed.

‘I’ve had a few messages actually, like via social media. All very positive on the acting front. But I think it is quite thought-provoking. You know, where you sit with it morally? Because obviously I’m a mother. If somebody did that to my child, I would find it enormously difficult to forgive.

‘That’s what’s brilliant about this storyline is that it kind of does get you questioning it quite a lot. On the whole, I feel like people sort of believe that she served her time. That’s where the majority kind of sits from what I’ve seen.’

‘When I took the part of Ella, I didn’t know that this storyline was going to be the storyline it is now’, she added.

‘But any actor worth their salt will take something very gritty. And that’s going to give you full exposure and run with it. So I knew that it was in safe hands, I knew that they wanted to do a really great job with it. Combined with the writer, and the director, I just knew that they were going to make it something really magical.

‘So initially, I think I was quite nervous to play it out. Because you just never know which way the audience is going to go. But ultimately, I just always look for the truth in it. And then hope that everything kind of follows on from there.’

Catcher prospect Romo gets the call as Rox part ways with Díaz

Thomas Harding

Thomas Harding

DENVER -- Laura Romo of The Woodlands, Texas, cleaned her son’s old room spotless.

The plan was for catcher Drew Romo , the Rockies’ No. 9 prospect in the MLB Pipeline rankings, to spend some nights at home while his Triple-A Albuquerque squad played Sugar Land -- about 45 minutes from the family house. But a couple nights ago, Romo received the change of plans of a lifetime.

  • How pitching relates to art for Feltner

Romo, 22, was promoted to the big leagues and joined the Rockies on Friday. He is scheduled for his first Major League start on Saturday night against the Padres.

To clear a 40-man roster spot, the Rockies unconditionally released the only All-Star catcher they’ve ever had, Elias Díaz , after he cleared outright waivers. Díaz was due to become a free agent at season’s end, and the Rockies already assigned Romo to earn his debut this year and a return next year for a shot at starting duty.

Romo tried to warn his mom.

“I told my mom that I was probably getting called up -- I was taken out of the lineup [Wednesday],” Romo said, chuckling. “She was like, ‘You’d better not get called up. I just cleaned the whole house, and I cleaned your room and everything, got it all ready for you.’”

Thank you for your dedication on and off the field. Good luck, Elias 💜 pic.twitter.com/XfUp3tnWjW — Colorado Rockies (@Rockies) August 16, 2024

Mom, dad Chris Romo, girlfriend Lauren Hanemann and other family and friends are more than happy to head to Denver. This much is known: Romo will have a tidy room after his six-week trial to show that he is the Rockies’ catching future.

The hope is when he does get home for the winter, he can look back on a successful breaking-in period. Much rides on Romo living up to the hopes the organization had when it selected him 35th overall in the 2020 MLB Draft.

The switch-hitting Romo did his part -- a slash line of .297/.339/.499 and 14 home runs in 85 games for Albuquerque. Also, he caught 24 runners stealing and made just two errors in Triple-A this year. That’s after he committed 15 errors last year between Double-A Hartford and Albuquerque,

The Rockies’ transition would have been cleaner had Díaz not gone to the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain in mid June and then sustained a right calf strain in July that he played through, demonstrating the grit that earned him respect throughout the roster, staff and front office. But because of the injuries and a market in which catchers were not coveted, the Rockies tried but could not move him to a contender before the July 30 Trade Deadline .

“He was a good Rockie, a good teammate, a hard worker,” Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt said. “He cared. He’s going to be missed in a lot of ways, but this is more that we’ve got to get better. The first step, I view, in getting better is giving Drew an opportunity here to get established, get his feet on the ground and see where that goes.”

Manager Bud Black has watched Romo since the prospect’s occasional Cactus League games in 2021. Black, who says he is “a critical judge of that position,” rattled off game-calling, blocking, receiving, throwing and handling the game as pivotal traits.

Romo had 11 passed balls in Triple-A this year.

“I expect him to learn, be a student -- and I hope the education happens fast,” Black said. “I hope he is a great learner of a lot of things he’s exposed to while he is here. And he can pick it up and not have it take two years.”

Have the latest news, ticket information, and more from the Pirates and MLB delivered right to your inbox.

Saturday will be intense.

Romo will face the National League West-contending Padres and catch Kyle Freeland, who invested time in Romo in Spring Training to help him develop into the leader he needs behind the plate. And even with the Rockies deep in the NL West basement, there will be a crowd giddy on a night honoring new Hall of Famer Todd Helton.

Romo prepared by focusing on daily tasks, rather than when he would be called to the Majors.

“I’m most proud of the game-planning and gaining trust of some of the older pitchers in Albuquerque,” Romo said. “That was really tough early in the season, being a younger guy. It was learning to read swings, learning to make game plans and scouting reports. That’s where I developed most in the season so far.”

To do it at the highest level, Romo gladly will miss out on a trip home.

Simple and straightforward, this is a very good place to stop. No, there are no frills or fancy stuff. But it's got the basics you need for a quick rest stop on a road trip. (We travel by here frequently between Tennessee and Florida.) Best of all besides the super friendly cashiers, are the immaculately clean restrooms...somewhat of a rarity on these road-side quick in and outs.

I really wish that I could rate 0 stars because of the way I was talked to when I was trying to get a job at this establishment. The supervisor was very unprofessional and rude when I was turning in papers saying that I was eligible to work. I asked one question and he popped off with an attitude after not even wanting to talk with me face to face in the first place. You don't relay messages through your hourly employees when someone is inquiring about a position they have been interviewed for. Nasty nasty attitude and poor people skills were demonstrated today from the supervisor of Gitty up n Go at the store in Florala. I no longer wish to work there or do business there because it was simply uncalled for the way I was treated. If I can get in contact with someone above their heads I will most definitely be doing that as well because excuse my language but that supervisor was a pure asshole towards me today.

Photo of Lorraine M.

People were rude and there were patrons smoking inside of the gas station. There was an out of order sign on the bathroom door (men's and women's) and I've overheard employees discussing that this was to save toilet paper. Will never stop here again.

A traveler's guide to Novosibirsk, the unofficial capital of Siberia

giddy up and go travel

Trans-Siberian heritage

Residents of Novosibirsk love trains and are proud of the fact that their city played a significant role in the history of the grand Trans-Siberian railway, which spans the breadth of Russia. The railway is such a part of Novosibirsk identity that it is even depicted on the city’s emblem, along with the bridge that crosses the Ob river and two Siberian sables standing on their hind legs.

In the city, there are as many as five monuments to trains, and an open-air locomotive museum is located in the vicinity of the train station Seyatel’. The museum has more than 100 steam locomotives, diesel locomotives and carriages, reflecting the history of rail transportation in Russia from pre-revolutionary times to the present day. Wondering around the stationary trains and comparing your height with the diameter of the gigantic iron wheels of the first steam locomotives is all very well, but why not climb inside the carriages and see how the nobility once traveled across Russia in pre-revolutionary times? These tours will however need to be booked in advance. The museum opens from 11:00 until 17:00 every day except Mondays.

Novosibirsk spans both sides of the river Ob. In the early twentieth century, the border of two different timezones passed right through the city which led to a strange situation- morning on the east bank started one hour earlier than on the west bank! The two-kilometer covered metro bridge that crosses the river is considered the longest in the world. Due to the fluctuations in temperature across the year (on average +30 °C to -30 °C), during the summer the metro bridge expands, and in the winter it contracts by half a meter. To counter these effects, the bridge’s supports are equipped with special rollers that allow it to move.

The cultural center of Siberia

The repertoire of the theatre can be viewed on its official website . The theatre season runs from September to July, and comprises mainly classical performances, like the ballet “The Nutcracker” by Tchaikovsky, Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” and Verdi’s “La Traviata”.

The large Siberian sea and ligers

Weekends are best spent at the Novosibirsk zoo . The zoo is known for breeding big cats, although surrounded by controversy, hosts a successful crossing of a tiger and lion, which of course would not otherwise breed in wildlife. Ligers, or exotic cubs of an African lion and Bengal tigress, feel quite comfortable in the Siberian climate and even produce offspring. The zoo is open to visitors year-round, seven days a week, and even has its own free mobile app, Zoo Nsk .

Every year at the beginning of January, the festival of snow culture takes place bringing together artists from across Russia and around the world to participate in a snow sculpting competition. The tradition started in 2000 inspired by the snow festival in Sapporo, Novosibirsk’s twin-city.

Siberian Silicon Valley

Despite the fact that Akademgorodok was built half a century ago in the middle of the uninhabited Siberian taiga, architecturally it was ahead of its time. No trees were destroyed for its construction, and houses were built right in the middle of the forest. A man walking through the woods would seemingly stumble upon these structures. At that time, no one had built anything similar in the world and ecovillages only became fashionable much later.

For residents of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok is a different world. When you step out the bus or car, you are immediately on one of the hiking paths through the forest, between the scientific buildings and clubs. On a walk through Akademgorodok, it is possible to unexpectedly encounter art-like objects handmade by residents of the city which have been erected as monuments and some monuments fixed up by city authorities. For example, the monument to the laboratory mice, which knits a strand of DNA on to some needles, can be found in the square alongside the Institute of Cytology and Genetics. In Akademgorodok there are many cafes and restaurants, in which it is possible to rest after a long walk. Grab a coffee and go to eat at Traveler’s Coffee , or eat lunch at the grille and bar People’s or Clover .

Winters in the Akademgorodok are slightly colder than in the city, so wrap up. Spring and summer are usually wetter, so waterproof boots are recommended. In the summer the Ob sea provides respite from the heat, so do not forget your swimsuit to go for a dip.

Memento Mori

giddy up and go travel

Among the exhibits of the museum is one dedicated to world funeral culture — hearses, memorial jewellery from the hair of the deceased, samples from a specific photo-genre of  "post mortem", a collection of funeral wear from the Victorian era, deathmasks, statues and monuments. There’s also an impressive collection of coffins. One of them, resembling a fish, was manufactured on a special visit to Novosibirsk by a designer coffin-maker from Africa, Eric Adjetey Anang, who specializes in the production of unusual coffins.

Surprisingly, the crematorium itself does not look at all gloomy in appearance and definitely does not look like infernal scenes from movies, or like crematoriums of other cities that gravitate towards gloomy temple aesthetics. The Novosibirsk crematorium is decorated in “cheerful” orange tones and is surrounded by a park with a children’s playground nearby. A visit to the museum then leaves you with mixed feelings.

Novosibirsk underground

giddy up and go travel

Tourists from all over the world go down into the Moscow metro to take a ride and a few selfies in the most famous underground museum. The Novosibirsk metro is also quite a museum in itself — it has 13 stations, the most beautiful of which is Gagarinskaya, Sibirskaya and Rechnoy Vokzal.

The ultramodern Gagarinskaya station is like a real cosmos underground. Its technologically themed design includes marble walls with metallic elements, dark blue backlighting and portraits of Yuri Gagarin. The Sibirskaya station looks like an underground treasure trove, decorated by Altai masters craftsmen with mosaics of precious Siberian stones. The Rechnoy Vokzal station is framed with ten glowing stained glass windows depicting the largest cities of Siberia, including Novosibirsk itself, Omsk, Barnaul and others. The platform resembles a big ship sailing on the Ob, from which ancient Siberian cities are visible through its windows.

How to get there

The easiest way to get to Novosibirsk is by plane with Aeroflot or Novosibirsk airline S7 with one-way tickets from Moscow costing from 200-250 USD. If you decide to take from the train from Moscow, you’ll have to travel approximately a third of the Trans-Siberian Railway. That’s 3,300 kilometers over almost a three-day journey.

Where to stay

There are many great hotels in Novosibirsk. Amongst the best include a four-star Doubletree hotel by Hilton , which is located near Lenin Square (per room from $200). After renovations and repairs, the congress-hotel Novosibirsk has improved (per room from $100) and is located across from the train station. Less expensive but of a similar standard is the four-star River Park hotel near Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, which costs $80 per night.

8 L.A. night hikes to escape the heat and experience awe

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

My coworkers and I were deep in conversation when we all gasped.

We’d crested a hill in Griffith Park, and rising just as we did up the hill was the strawberry moon.

The light red full moon rising over L.A. in June 2023.

All conversation ceased for a moment as we took in the view, the headlights of thousands of drivers on the 5 Freeway, twinkling street lamps and the orange glow from homes in nearby Atwater Village and beyond — and that moon, low in the sky, a reddish tint thanks to its proximity to the horizon.

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

That’s when I really fell in love with full moon hikes, standing there eating strawberry-flavored snacks with my giddy colleagues as we celebrated our luck of arriving at Five Points at the perfect moment.

Hiking during full moons, and sometimes just on a nice evening, is a semi-regular ritual of mine. Not only does it offer a different type of sensory experience than daytime treks — including croaking frogs, hooting owls and chirping crickets — but it’s also a more tolerable way to get outdoors during the hottest months of the year.

August’s full moon will be brightest and boldest on Monday. And if you can’t make it on exactly that evening, you can typically hike the night before or after a full moon and get a nice show.

Two dogs sit on a dirt path at night. A bright moon and city lights loom in the distance.

The first thing you need for an evening hike is hiking companions. Don’t get me wrong, I love a solo hike — just me, my dog and my satellite communicator out in the woods. But hiking at night alone isn’t something I would recommend, as many of our native wildlife — including mountain lions, bears and coyotes — are most active then.

The next thing to consider is what gear you’d like to bring. Sturdy hiking boots are helpful because if you trip or stumble, your ankles are more protected. A flashlight or headlamp is good to have, although some hiking groups discourage their usage, unless they come with the option to switch to a red tint, as our eyes are less affected by the longer wavelengths of red light. I like to bring a flashlight with a UV option because it not only saves your nighttime vision but also allows you to see (and avoid) scorpions, which glow under UV light.

As with any hike, you’ll want to check the weather and pack accordingly. My colleagues and I were up at Griffith Park on a particularly windy evening for a full moon hike and were glad we’d layered up. From there, you should bring whatever you usually need on a hike, like poles, snacks and water.

As for where to do a full-moon hike, there is no shortage of options. I look for urban hikes with wide paths to high points with panoramic views of L.A. County. Some hiking spots close at sunset, so you’ll want to check the times that trails are open. When parking, look for gates. You don’t want to come down from your hike to find a locked gate blocking in your car.

If you’d be more comfortable with a group, you’re in luck: There are many organized full moon and night hikes in L.A. County this time of year. I’ve rounded up some of them below:

  • The Eaton Canyon Nature Center Associates hosts a monthly moonlight walk, usually on Fridays closest to the full moon. You can join them at 6:45 p.m. Friday at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center. The hike leaves at 7 p.m. sharp so being on time is quite important. Learn more at ecnca.org .
  • The Sierra Club Angeles Chapter hosts its moonlight hike on Saturday, meaning the moon will be fairly bright for that outing. This is a moderately paced five(ish)-mile hike through Griffith Park. Sierra Club membership is not required. Arrive by 6:45 p.m. to sign liability waivers. The hike leaves at 7. You can learn more and register at meetup.com .
  • We Explore Earth, a nonprofit outdoors group, will host a free full moon hike from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday in Elysian Park. Participants can also partake in a 30-minute yoga session during the event and stargaze through telescopes that group leaders will bring on the hike. Register at eventbrite.com .
  • TreePeople, an L.A. nonprofit, will host a moonlight hike at Coldwater Canyon Park in Beverly Hills on Aug. 23. It costs $20 per person, kids under 15 cost $10. You can learn more and register at its website .
  • Vasquez Rocks Natural Area hosts a monthly twilight and early full moon hike. The hike is free but donations to the Vasquez Rocks Nature Center Associates are appreciated. August’s event is full (with more than 100 people on its waiting list), but September and October are open for registration.
  • For my Wilders near Riverside or San Bernardino (or for those wanting to explore a new place), the Wildlands Conservancy will host a night hike Saturday at its Oak Glen Preserve in Yucaipa. You can learn more and register here .

For those who feel nervous about hiking at night but still want to experience the glory of a summer night sky in person, try these options:

  • The Lancaster Museum of Art and History will host a one-mile astronomy-themed tour Saturday through the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve in Lancaster. Weather permitting, there might be telescopes available to gaze through. Register at eventbrite.com .
  • Orange County Parks will host a full moon nature journaling session Sunday in the gorgeous Black Star Canyon. Registration required. Sign up at letsgooutside.org .

I personally enjoy going to Griffith Park for full moon and evening hikes because it offers so many great views. I usually park near the merry go-round. From there, my friends and I usually head to either 5-Points (lower right corner of this map ), or Mt. Hollywood.

Lights from homes, streets and the city stretch out toward the night horizon.

Mt. Hollywood in Griffith Park remains my favorite — especially for a full moon hike. It offers panoramic views of L.A. County, and there are picnic tables where you can take a break before heading down.

That said, it’s a popular spot. My friend Laura and I hiked up to Mt. Hollywood one evening and sat quietly admiring the view, commenting on how remarkable it was that we were in a county of 10 million people, in the middle of the city, and yet we were mostly alone in this beautiful place.

Two human silhouettes against a rocky wall.

And then, we heard the thump of a bass. Dozens of hikers covered in glowing necklaces and bracelets emerged from the trail, dancing joyfully. Laura and I laughed really hard. They were such a fun group, I was tempted to ask how I could join. After all, a full moon over Los Angeles is something best appreciated with friends, new and old.

3 things to do

A wide Los Angeles Street filled with bikers.

1. Bike almost seven miles of car-free streets in Hollywood Walk, jog, bike, roller skate or skateboard along 6.6 miles of car-free streets Sunday as CicLAvia takes over the streets of Tinseltown for the nonprofit’s 54th event in L.A. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can traverse the route , which connects East Hollywood, Hollywood and West Hollywood. Visit any of the five hubs along the route for family-friendly activities, restrooms, free water refill stations and basic bike repair. There will also be plenty of spots to eat along the way. Please note that, although certain types of e-bikes are permitted, electric scooters and other nonpeople-powered vehicles are not allowed, outside of motorized wheelchairs and related vehicles for people with disabilities. Learn more at ciclavia.org .

2. Collect data on local wildlife in Harbor City Join jr. urban ecologist Ryan Kinzel from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park (25820 Vermont Ave.) in Harbor City for a so-called BioBlitz. At this L.A. City Recreation & Parks event, you’ll use the app iNaturalist to collect data on species that live around Machado Lake and the rest of the park. Organizers advise you bring sunscreen, water and a charged phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded. Learn more at the L.A. Parks’ Facebook page .

3. Take a free compass and map course in Fountain Valley Getting lost is any hiker’s nightmare. Sports Basement, an outdoor goods retailer, will host a free introductory course to using maps and navigation tools from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Participants will learn how a compass works and how to read topography maps and practice orienting a map and taking a bearing. Register at eventbrite.com .

The must-read

Half Dome at dusk in the distance from Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park

The death of 20-year-old Grace Rohloff while hiking Yosemite’s Half Dome has reignited debates about how to improve the safety of the iconic outdoors destination. The hike to Half Dome is 14 to 16 miles, and a permit is required to use the cables, installed in 1919, that visitors use to reach the top. You can read part of that debate in our letters to the editor this week. Connie Stewart of Santa Monica argues that National Park Service officials should permanently remove the cables, which are currently available seasonally . “Half Dome is dangerous. And that’s as it should be. National parks aren’t Disneyland; they are part of nature,” Stewart writes. Conversely, Bill Smart of Santa Barbara suggests that the problem lies in too many inexperienced hikers attempting to summit Half Dome. “Let the cables be. Screen permit applicants more carefully, as the danger lies with some of them, not the cables,” Smart writes.

Regardless of where you are adventuring, please be safe out there, friends. When in doubt, turn around. The mountains will be there next time you return.

Happy adventuring,

History of Novosibirsk Oblast

Over thousands of years, the territory of the Novosibirsk region, due to its location on the border of natural zones and cultural regions (the Siberian taiga and the Eurasian steppe), played the role of a buffer zone or border zone of different peoples.

In the 13th-15th centuries, this land was the eastern outskirts of the Golden Horde. Later, until the end of the 16th century, it was part of the Siberian Khanate. In the 18th century, the territory of the present Novosibirsk region became part of the Russian Empire.

Despite the relatively favorable climate, the Russians began to settle here relatively late. The Barabin Tatars were the indigenous people. Today, their total population is about 10,000 people living mainly in the western parts of the region.

The Barabin Tatars were subjected to constant attacks of the Kalmyks (the Oyrates and Teleuts). Russian villages were also under the threat. That’s why people preferred to settle in the north, near Tomsk. Only at the end of the 17th century, Novosibirsk province became attractive to settlers.

More Historical Facts…

The first settlement was founded by the boyar son Alexey Kruglik in 1695. Later, this settlement became the village of Kruglikovo. Today, it is located in Bolotninsky district. In the early 18th century, Berdsky stockaded town was built. Over time, the threat from the nomads decreased and the number of settlers increased.

In 1722, the Siberian line of fortresses along the Irtysh River was constructed. The locals were mainly engaged in soil tilling, fishing and hunting. In the early 19th century, the famous Ural manufacturer Akinfiy Demidov constructed two copper melting plants here - Kolyvansky and Barnaulsky.

In 1893, due to the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the railway bridge across the Ob River, Alexandrovsky settlement was built (from 1895 - Novonikolayevsky). Thanks to its convenient geographical location (the Trans-Siberian Railway crossing the Ob River, transportation ways connecting Siberia with the European part of the Russian Empire), its trade importance grew rapidly. In 1909, Novonikolayevsk became a town. In 1925, it was renamed in Novosibirsk.

Before 1921, the territory of Novosibirsk oblast was part of Tomsk gubernia, from 1921 to 1925 - of Novonikolayevsk gubernia, from 1925 to 1930 - of Siberian krai, from 1930 to 1937 - of West Siberian krai. September 28, 1937, West Siberian krai was divided into Novosibirsk oblast and Altay krai. This date is considered the official date of the region formation.

Novosibirsk Oblast - Features

Novosibirsk Oblast is located in the south east of the East-Siberian Plain, in the steppe, forest-steppe and taiga zones, between the Ob and the Irtysh rivers. The length of the region from west to east - 642 km, from north to south - 444 km.

The southern part of Vasyugan swamp, the largest swamp in the world, occupies the territory in the north and north-west of the province. In the southwest, it borders with Pavlodar oblast of Kazakhstan.

There are about 3,000 lakes on the territory of the Novosibirsk region. The largest lakes are Chany, Ubinskoye, Sartlan. Novosibirsk Reservoir also known as “the Ob Sea” (1,082 sq. km.) was created for Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The climate is continental. The average temperature in January ranges from minus 16 degrees Celsius in the south and minus 20 degrees Celsius in the north. The average temperature in July - plus 18-20 degrees Celsius.

The largest cities and towns are Novosibirsk (1,621,000), Berdsk (103,500), Iskitim (54,700), Kuybishev (43,000). Novosibirsk is one the largest industrial, transport, scientific, and cultural center of Russia, the third most populous city in the country after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is also the capital of the Siberian Federal District.

In the historical part of Novosibirsk you can find a lot of preserved monuments of the Russian Empire times. The Soviet era is presented by numerous scientific and cultural attractions, as well as beautiful parks.

There are more than 500 deposits of various mineral resources in Novosibirsk Oblast (coal, refractory clay, peat, anthracite). Natural gas and oil fields are located in the north-western part of the region. There are significant reserves of underground thermal and mineral waters. Forests cover about 4 million hectares, more than 20% of the territory.

Novosibirsk Oblast is one of the most industrially developed regions in Siberia (metal processing and machine building, food, power engineering, non-ferrous metallurgy industries). Heavy industries are concentrated in Novosibirsk, Iskitim and Berdsk.

The regional agriculture specializes in the cultivation of grain, potatoes and vegetables. Dairy cattle breeding, poultry farming and beekeeping are developed. The production of flax plays an important role too. Agricultural development of the territory is not high (about 48%). In general, it has about 25% of all agricultural land in Western Siberia.
