From the lungs of the earth to the founding place of evolution, little Ecuador packs a big punch, exceeding expectations in nature-based sustainable travel. Leading the way as a global change-maker, Ecuador marries dense rainforests, untamed rivers and prehistoric volcanoes with community, culture and conservation.

It's worth noting that ecotourism and sustainable travel aren't exactly the same thing – ecotourism can be unsustainable. Sustainability refers to the broader concept of creating travel that is not environmentally or culturally damaging. Ecuador combines these two brilliantly; here's a list of some of our favorite sustainable ecotourism experiences.

The rise of ecotourism in Ecuador

Ecuador may be the smallest contender to make the list of the top ten most biodiverse countries, but that doesn’t stop it from inspiring and educating when it comes to ecotourism. Ecuadorian tourism entrepreneurs are leading the way regarding sustainable ecotourism, creating the awareness and attracting the financial support necessary to protect the environment around them. Rather than harvesting land, flora and fauna for short-term gain, many are employing sustainable models designed to generate revenue for generations to come.

Train rides through the Avenue of Volcanos

In an area punctuated with rolling hills, glacier-capped volcanoes and cloud-piercing mountains – all evidence of past tectonic activity – it’s hard to imagine a better backdrop for train travel. These types of trips, however, are usually costly and generally don’t put sustainability first. Tren Ecuador , on the other hand, prides themselves on “breaking with the traditional model of luxury train rides” to offer an affordable experience where everyone wins.

Departing from the old city center in Quito , the Tren de los Volcanes tour travels through the "Avenue of the Volcanoes," passing the iconic Pichincha and Cotopaxi volcanoes. The train makes a three stops along the way; including Cotopaxi National Park, where visitors disembark and take guided hikes through the temperate forests. At the final stop in Machachi, passengers enjoy a meal from Café del Tren, a locally owned and operated business working with Tren Ecuador via the company's social responsibility program .

In addition to operating under the United Nations’ Global Code of Ethics for tourism , Tren Ecuador invites nearby communities to take a leading role in product innovation, which in turn results in several community-operated restaurants, artisanal markets, museums, lodges and indigenous dance group presentations along the tracks.

If you’re traveling on the Tren de los Volcanes tour, consider getting off at the last stop (Machachi) and taking a bus or taxi to Baños or Cotopaxi instead of going back to Quito and taking a bus the same way.

Bicycle adventures in Ba ñ os

Located on the edge of the Amazon and in the middle of Ecuador's enchanting cloud forests, Ba ños is a mountain and freshwater adventure hub that immerses travelers in experiences that have low environmental impact.

White water rafting, mountain biking, zip lining, mountaintop swinging, relaxing in hot springs, kayaking, hiking – the list goes on. Most travelers don’t set aside enough time for it all, but if you want to make the most of Baños, prepare to get an early start and participate in more than one activity a day.

The best way to see the area's beautiful waterfalls is by biking the Ruta de Cascadas (Route of the Waterfalls). It can get busy, so wake up early to catch the cascadas before the crowds. Several gondolas, hiking trails and boardwalks take you to the cloud forest-shrouded waterfalls. Bike rentals in Baños can vary in quality and condition; we recommend Wonderful Ecuador for rentals and cycling tours.

Sustainable Travel in the Galapagos

In a place that is wild, raw and always lives up to expectations set by film documentaries, the Galapagos National Park is a poster child for high standards of environmental protection. 97% of the volcanic archipelago has been protected since 1968 – people live on the other 3%. And while the number of visitors allowed per yacht tour license hasn’t changed in 25 years, the islands have seen an increase in the standard of service, boat efficiency, rules on marine pollution and the allocation of yachts per location. The National Park Authority identifies variables such as how much wildlife lives on each island and how close they are to pathways in order to determine how many people can be on each given pathway and at what time of day.

The number of visitors to the Galapagos grows every year, and the number of tour licenses (called ‘patents’) issued has increased for day trips due to high demand and the addition of newly built budget hotels. While this region is a sustainable role model for others around the world, there's progress to be made. Visitors often book inexpensive experiences that frequently come at a cost to the environment; doing more research and spending a little more money results in a far better experience and goes a long way in conserving this pristine place.

Awarding-winning catamaran Yacht Anahí is built on a foundation of sustainability and employee empowerment. With a high employee retention in an industry notorious for turnover, this luxury catamaran boasts an exceptionally skilled crew, the most efficient vessel in the National Park (according to the National Park Authority) and a carbon offset program that takes funds from each passengers’ payment and allocates it to a project that removes invasive flora and fauna and plants native trees.

The same Ecuadorian family who runs Yacht Anahí runs Ikala Hotel on Santa Cruz Island; this hotel was the first to set a trend in addressing the ongoing sewage problem by installing a compost system along with green energy, local sourcing and eliminating plastics. Another green hotel outside of the main Puerto Ayora area that's also committed to the environment, reforestation and conservation is Pikaia Lodge . Should you be looking to book day trips, the staff at these resorts will point you in the right direction.

Mindful travel in the Amazon

Despite its impressive size, the world's largest rainforest is a fragile ecosystem where tourism development can sometimes have harmful effects. In addition, many of the Amazon's original residents have often been excluded from conversations about tourism development. Yacuma Ecolodge in Tena has been working to change all this. Prior to the founding of the lodge and its adjacent nature reserve, local indigenous groups would sell their land to oil companies in exchange for short-term financial stability; when Yacuma entered the area, it bought the surrounding land to preserve it from industrial interests and create ongoing employment opportunity for nearby communities. Today, Yacuma employs knowledgeable local guides, serves locally sourced meals, powers the facilities using green energy, and perhaps best of all, maintains and protects the 274-hectare nature reserve that the locals and lodge call home.

Day hikes are especially notable for bird watching and identifying plant species, while guided night walks reveal a more active side of the Amazon replete with sightings of spiders, frogs and lizards. After a morning hike, cool off and tube down the Napo River or hang out in the riverside hammocks.

How to select sustainable operators

Sustainable travel can be broken down into a few key elements that all relate back to purpose and picking the right operators is an essential part of shifting tourism development patterns. When choosing a lodge or operator, pay attention to the connection between their values of community, culture and environment. The profits and benefits should go to the local communities, not corporations or chains. The environment should be protected and utilized as an educational asset, creating awareness and demand to keep it intact. And in Ecuador in particular, local indigenous culture should honored and preserved through realistic and stable employment opportunities. If these three attributes align, you’ll have a purpose-driven, sustainable adventure to remember.

Ecotourism in Ecuador: Eco-friendly Travel Around the Country

  • February 19, 2021

Did you know that Ecuador was named the World’s Leading Green Destination by the World Travel Awards for six consecutive years between 2013 and 2018? Ecotourism in Ecuador is a growing industry, and travelers now have numerous options to choose from across the country’s diverse regions.

The idea behind ecotourism is that it functions to promote the wellbeing of local communities while protecting and preserving the environment through sustainable activities. It is an opportunity for the traveler to live and travel more consciously and experience the destination in a more profound and meaningful way.

Must-see Ecological Paradises: Our Staff Recommendations

If you want to explore ecotourism as part of your trip to Ecuador, you can take part in experiences or stay at any of several eco-lodges around the country. Before we get into some unique activities and experiences in the next section, here is a brief list of some lodges we recommend visiting, divided by region. As always, we recommend reading about them and exploring what they have to offer.

[ We recommend you check out this blog to learn about community-based tourism in Ecuador . ]

Sierra Region

The Secret Garden — Nestled in the hills adjacent to Cotopaxi volcano, the Secret Garden is a mesmerizing and genuinely impressive eco-tourism initiative. Activities here include day hikes, horseback riding, and even summiting Cotopaxi itself! Black Sheep Inn — Situated in the village of Chugchilán near the breathtaking Quilotoa crater, this ecolodge advocates a holistic approach to conservation by protecting the land, culture, environment, and community. They’re accomplishing this through self-sufficiency, thanks to composting toilets, alternative energy, permaculture-style gardening, and biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable products where applicable. Llullu Llama — The hike through the surrounding valleys near Quilotoa may take you through the tiny and charming town of Isinliví. Here, the cozy Llullu Llama welcomes visitors from all over the world. Their operation is quite similar to that of the Black Sheep Inn, in their implementation of composting toilets, alternative energy, permaculture-style gardening, and more.

Amazon Region

Tamandua Ecolodge — This ecolodge, comprised of a series of rustic natural cabins, sits inside a beautiful reserve. Its simplicity allows it to blend into the setting, providing travelers with the perfect distraction-free opportunity to connect with and appreciate the region’s flora and fauna. Keep in mind that the walk to the cabins is about 20 minutes from the road, making it a remote destination like few others. The people who manage this spot are also hosts of a remarkable animal rescue and rehabilitation program.  Kapawi Ecolodge — Deep in the Amazon Rainforest near the border with Peru, the Kapawi people have established one of Ecuador’s most interesting ecolodges. Guests arrive by traveling along the river, Río Pastaza, which straddles the provinces of Pastaza and Morona-Santiago . This experience is at once educational and culturally immersive. The lodge is entirely owned and operated by this small indigenous community . Huasquila Amazon Eco Lodge — In Cotundo, a small community just north of Tena, this inviting spot offers travelers the opportunity to relax and explore the Amazon Rainforest without having to leave their low-impact, environmentally-sound retreat within the Sumaco Biosphere Reserve. It is located about 3 hours by car from the capital city of Quito. Finca Heimatlos — At the edge of the Amazon Rainforest, in Pastaza Province, sits a fascinating ecolodge and sustainable farming project on 50 hectares of pristine land. Finca Heimatlos is a perfect spot from which to explore exciting trails and glimpse exciting wildlife. The farm component makes an effort to blend permaculture with regional, low environmental-impact farming practices

Coastal Region

Azuluna Ecolodge — The area known as Las Tunas in the Province of Manabí is host to some of the most stunning ocean views and beaches in Ecuador. Azuluna Ecolodge receives visitors from all over and is situated very close to the Machalilla National Park. Apart from its work to conserve and protect the environment, Azuluna also supports several fair-trade and community development projects in Las Tunas and nearby Ayampe. Umbrellabird Lodge — In the Buenaventura Reserve, just a short drive inland from the southern coast of Ecuador, the Umbrellabird Lodge provides a riveting experience for birders and conservation enthusiasts from all over the world. This spot is run by the Jocotoco Foundation, which employs some of the most thorough ecological practices around. They partner with the community to preserve this biologically diverse gem in a part of the country that the typical tourist does not often frequent.  Cabalonga EcoAdventure – In Puerto Cayo, home of some of Ecuador’s most beautiful beaches, Cabalonga EcoAdventure is dedicated to safeguarding the region’s incredible biodiversity. Guests of Cabalonga take part in memorable and awe-inspiring outdoor experiences that enlighten and help support local economies, like those of the artisan community and conservationists.

What to Consider Before Experiencing Ecotourism in Ecuador

Have you heard of the term “greenwashing”? It is used to describe hotels and businesses that appear eco-friendly, but are not. You’ll find that ecotourism in Ecuador may have very different applications and interpretations, depending on local standards.

If you wish to choose ecologically-sound establishments during your travels, make sure you thoroughly investigate the hotel or business before making a reservation. Visit their website, read TripAdvisor reviews and email them directly. Specifically, ask how the establishment supports the community and promotes low-impact tourism.

This is particularly important for your visit to more remote and pristine areas of Ecuador, like the Amazon Rainforest and Galápagos Islands.

Ecotourism Options Along the Pacific Coast of Ecuador

Compared to the Amazon, ecotourism establishments along Ecuador’s Pacific Coast are sparse, but here are a couple of spots worth visiting.

Río Muchacho Organic Farm and Ecolodge — Located near the seaside city of Canoa, this 10-hectare organic farm and ecolodge is an inspirational and relaxing place to visit. Apart from being completely self-sufficient, Río Muchacho offers courses on sustainable agriculture and permaculture to visitors and the local community.  Finca Sarita — This organic farm near the coastal town of Calceta also happens to produce some of the world’s most expensive chocolate. Owned by a local family that champions permaculture and organic farming techniques in the community, Finca Sarita is entirely self-sufficient and offers travelers accommodations and meals for just $15. The town of Calceta is known for its production of traditional pottery.

Cacao in Ecuador

Ecotourism Alternatives in Ecuador’s Amazon Jungle

Ecotourism in Ecuador’s Amazon is often merged with community-based tourism initiatives. Some of these are standalone operations, while others partner with high-end lodges. Here are a few we like to promote:

Sinchi Warmi – If you want to support a project owned and led by indigenous Kichwa women, come to Sinchi Warmi (which means “strong women” in the Kichwa language). This community tourism project is based near Misahualli (only 3-4 hours from Quito). It provides accommodations in attractive rustic cabins built around a small lake and features local dishes in their restaurant (they also have vegetarian options).  Campamento Kwakwiyo – Run by the Siekoya Remolino community near Lago Agrio, this camp sits on 17,000 hectares of protected rainforest close to the Colombian border. Visitors can stay with families or in a covered camping area. A unique activity here includes the ayahuasca ceremony, led by local and well-respected shamans. Other activities include day hikes, night walks, bird and wildlife watching, and canoe trips. Fundación Hola Vida – Near the Amazonian city of Puyo (4-5 hours from Quito), this community-led ecotourism initiative gives you access to 225 hectares of secondary rainforest where you can visit Hola Vida, a large waterfall. You can either hire a local guide to explore the area or go independently along clearly designated trails.

The “Leave No Trace” Principle

“Leave No Trace” is a widely known set of outdoor ethics principles developed in the United States that you can, and should, apply in Ecuador (and pretty much anywhere else you travel!). Leave No Trace was developed to promote environmental conservation by minimizing human impact. It consists of 7 principles, including:

  • Plan ahead and prepare
  • Travel and camp on firm ground
  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Leave what you find
  • Minimize campfire impacts
  • Respect wildlife
  • Be considerate of other visitors.

The idea is, after enjoying your time in the outdoors, you leave it as you found it (if not better!), and it’s always a good and considerate thing to do—to collect any trash you find along the way.

Ecuador 10-day itinerary

Though ten days in a country offers a better feel of what that country has to offer, Ecuador doubles-down on offering the experience of nature at its most extreme and most diverse… If 5 days takes us up and down the Ecuadorian rollercoaster, 10 days is double the fun. So, sit back and enjoy the

Ecuador 5-day itinerary

Five days in Ecuador is clearly not enough to get to know the country well, but there’s one thing that five days in Ecuador can do. And that is give you a peek at its amazing diversity and distinct “worlds”. Just for that experience alone, 5 days in Ecuador is an exciting adventure that few

Introduction

Ecuador, a small but geographically diverse country located in South America, is renowned for its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism practices. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and vibrant indigenous cultures, Ecuador offers a plethora of ecotourism activities for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Ecotourism, also known as sustainable tourism, focuses on minimizing the negative impact on the environment and maximizing the benefits for local communities. It aims to promote responsible travel that creates positive economic, social, and environmental outcomes. Ecuador, with its protected areas, national parks, and ecological reserves, is the perfect destination for eco-conscious travelers.

From exploring the iconic Amazon rainforest to snorkeling with marine iguanas in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador offers a wide range of ecotourism activities that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the country’s natural wonders while contributing to their preservation. Let’s delve into some of the top ecotourism activities available in Ecuador:

Amazon Rainforest Tours

The Amazon rainforest is often referred to as the “lungs of the Earth” due to its immense biodiversity and vital role in global climate regulation. Ecuador is fortunate to be home to a portion of this magnificent ecosystem, offering visitors the opportunity to embark on unforgettable Amazon rainforest tours.

These tours typically start from the city of Coca, where travelers take a scenic boat ride along the Napo River, deep into the heart of the Amazon. Once in the rainforest, experienced guides lead visitors on exhilarating hikes through the lush jungle, pointing out various species of plants, animals, and birds along the way.

For a truly immersive experience, visitors can also stay in eco-friendly lodges nestled within the rainforest. These lodges often operate on sustainable practices, utilizing renewable energy sources and minimizing their carbon footprint. Guests can enjoy waking up to symphonies of tropical birds, participating in indigenous community visits, and even trying their hand at traditional Amazonian fishing techniques.

One of the highlights of an Amazon rainforest tour in Ecuador is the opportunity to spot elusive wildlife, such as toucans, monkeys, sloths, and even the elusive jaguar. Expert guides possess extensive knowledge of the rainforest and its inhabitants, increasing the chances of encountering these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.

Aside from the wildlife, visitors also get a glimpse into the rich cultures of the indigenous communities that call the Amazon home. They can learn about traditional medicinal plants, participate in local ceremonies, and gain a deeper understanding of the symbiotic relationship between these communities and the rainforest.

Overall, embarking on an Amazon rainforest tour in Ecuador is not only a thrilling adventure but also an opportunity to support conservation efforts and responsible tourism. By choosing sustainable tour operators and following ethical wildlife-watching practices, visitors contribute to the preservation of this awe-inspiring ecosystem for future generations to enjoy.

Galapagos Islands Cruises

The Galapagos Islands, located approximately 620 miles off the coast of mainland Ecuador, are a UNESCO World Heritage site and a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Renowned for inspiring Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, these isolated volcanic islands offer a unique and unparalleled ecotourism experience.

Exploring the Galapagos Islands on a cruise allows visitors to witness the remarkable biodiversity that inspired Darwin’s revolutionary thinking. These cruises offer a range of itineraries, allowing travelers to visit different islands and observe their distinct ecosystems and wildlife populations.

Guided by knowledgeable naturalist guides, visitors can observe and learn about the iconic Galapagos tortoises, marine iguanas, Blue-footed Boobies, Darwin’s finches, and many other species found nowhere else on Earth. Snorkeling and diving opportunities abound, providing unforgettable encounters with playful sea lions, colorful tropical fish, and even sea turtles.

In recent years, there has been a shift towards more sustainable cruise options in the Galapagos Islands. Eco-friendly ships are now available, designed to minimize their environmental impact through practices like waste management, energy conservation, and the use of biodiesel fuel. These efforts ensure that the delicate ecosystems of the Galapagos are preserved for generations to come.

Furthermore, strict regulations are in place to protect the fragile ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands. Visitors must stick to designated trails, follow responsible wildlife-watching guidelines, and avoid introducing invasive species. These measures help maintain the ecological balance and ensure the long-term preservation of the unique flora and fauna that call the Galapagos home.

By embarking on a Galapagos Islands cruise, visitors not only have the opportunity to witness the wonders of nature but also support conservation initiatives that aim to protect this fragile and extraordinary ecosystem. These cruises provide a perfect balance of education, adventure, and sustainability, leaving travelers with a deep appreciation for the Galapagos’ ecological significance.

Cloud Forest Hiking

The cloud forests of Ecuador are mystical and enchanting ecosystems that are teeming with life. Located in the high-altitude regions of the Andes, these forests are characterized by their ever-present mist and a diverse array of plant and animal species. Exploring the cloud forests through hiking is a fantastic way to connect with nature and witness the unique biodiversity that thrives in these ethereal landscapes.

Ecuador is home to several cloud forest reserves, with Mindo and the Mashpi Reserve being popular destinations for hiking enthusiasts. These reserves offer well-maintained hiking trails that wind through dense vegetation, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in this enchanting environment.

As you hike through the cloud forests, you’ll be surrounded by a symphony of bird songs and the gentle hum of insects. The cloud forests of Ecuador are a paradise for birdwatchers, as they harbor over 400 species of avifauna, including the famous Andean cock-of-the-rock and the vibrant quetzal.

Beyond the stunning birdlife, the cloud forests are home to a variety of unique and endemic flora, including orchids, bromeliads, and moss-covered trees. The misty environment creates a haven for epiphytes, plants that grow on other plants without harming them, which adds to the ethereal beauty of the landscape.

While hiking through the cloud forests, visitors may also encounter rare and elusive mammals such as the spectacled bear and the endangered Andean condor. Experienced guides provide valuable insight into the local flora and fauna, enhancing the hiking experience and ensuring the protection of these fragile ecosystems.

It’s important to choose ecotourism operators that prioritize responsible practices, such as maintaining designated trails and limiting the number of visitors to minimize the impact on the delicate ecosystem. By supporting these sustainable initiatives, visitors can contribute to the preservation of these unique cloud forest environments.

Cloud forest hiking in Ecuador offers a magical and immersive experience, providing a connection to nature that is both rejuvenating and educational. Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply seeking tranquility amidst nature’s beauty, exploring Ecuador’s cloud forests is a must for any ecotourism enthusiast.

Ecological Farm Visits

For those seeking a unique and educational experience in Ecuador, visiting ecological farms provides an opportunity to learn about sustainable agriculture practices while enjoying the beauty of the countryside. These farms prioritize organic farming methods, biodiversity conservation, and the promotion of local food systems.

Ecuador is known for its fertile lands and diverse microclimates, making it an ideal location for ecological farming. Visitors can explore a range of farms, from small-scale organic gardens to larger agricultural cooperatives.

Ecological farm visits offer a chance to witness firsthand the principles of permaculture, agroforestry, and regenerative agriculture. These farms prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and ethical treatment of animals while minimizing chemical inputs and maximizing resource efficiency.

During farm tours, visitors can participate in hands-on activities like harvesting organic fruits and vegetables, preparing traditional dishes, and learning about local farming techniques. This interactive approach provides a deeper understanding of the challenges and rewards of sustainable food production.

Many ecological farms also promote the preservation of traditional knowledge and indigenous practices related to agriculture. Visitors can learn about ancient planting methods, medicinal plant uses, and the cultural significance of certain crops.

Additionally, farm visits often include opportunities to taste farm-fresh produce, from succulent fruits to aromatic herbs and vegetables. The flavors of these organic and locally grown foods are often superior to those found in traditional supermarket settings.

By supporting ecological farms, visitors contribute to the preservation and promotion of sustainable agriculture in Ecuador. The income generated from farm visits helps fund ongoing conservation efforts, maintain traditional farming practices, and support local communities.

When planning a visit to an ecological farm, consider choosing farms that have a clear commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Look for certifications or affiliations with organic farming organizations to ensure that the farm follows rigorous ecological standards.

Overall, ecological farm visits offer an enriching experience where visitors can reconnect with the origins of their food, gain insights into sustainable farming practices, and support local communities. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the countryside and experience firsthand the rewards of ecological farming.

Volcano Exploration and Trekking

Ecuador is known for its impressive volcanic landscapes, offering adventurous travelers the opportunity to explore and trek some of the most awe-inspiring volcanic peaks in the world. With over 50 volcanoes, both active and dormant, the country provides a unique setting for volcano exploration and trekking.

One of the most iconic destinations for volcano exploration in Ecuador is Cotopaxi National Park. At the heart of this park stands Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Trekking up Cotopaxi’s snow-capped slopes presents a thrilling challenge and rewarding panoramic views of the surrounding Andean landscape.

Another popular volcano to explore is Chimborazo, the highest peak in Ecuador and the furthest point from the center of the Earth due to its location along the equatorial bulge. Treks to the summit of Chimborazo require technical skills and acclimatization but offer a sense of accomplishment and unmatched views of the Ecuadorian Andes.

For those seeking a less challenging trekking experience, Tungurahua offers a moderate hike with stunning vistas. This active volcano, located near the city of Baños, provides trekkers with the opportunity to witness its smoking crater and awe-inspiring lava flows from a safe distance.

Volcano exploration in Ecuador is not limited to the Andean region. The Galapagos Islands, famous for their unique wildlife, are also home to a volcanic wonderland. Visitors can hike up Sierra Negra, the largest volcano on Isabela Island, and marvel at the vast caldera that stretches over 6 miles in diameter.

When embarking on volcano treks in Ecuador, it is crucial to prioritize safety and respect for the environment. Hiring experienced local guides is strongly recommended to navigate the challenging terrain and ensure adherence to proper safety protocols.

Ecuador’s commitment to sustainable tourism extends to volcano exploration. Many tour operators and national parks in Ecuador promote responsible hiking practices, such as staying on designated trails, minimizing waste, and respecting wildlife and the fragile volcanic ecosystems.

Volcano exploration and trekking in Ecuador offer a unique blend of adventure, breathtaking views, and an understanding of the geological forces that have shaped the country’s landscape. Whether you’re an experienced mountaineer or a nature enthusiast, the volcanoes of Ecuador provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in the raw beauty of these natural wonders.

Indigenous Community Immersion Experience

Ecuador is home to a rich tapestry of indigenous cultures, each with its own unique traditions, languages, and way of life. For travelers seeking a deeper understanding of the country’s diverse cultural heritage, participating in an indigenous community immersion experience is a transformative and enlightening opportunity.

Indigenous community visits allow visitors to connect with the local communities and gain insight into their daily lives, customs, and traditional knowledge. These immersive experiences provide a platform for cultural exchange, fostering mutual understanding and appreciation.

Ecuador offers several indigenous community tourism initiatives, ranging from day visits to homestays with local families. These programs often involve activities such as learning traditional crafts, participating in traditional ceremonies, and enjoying traditional meals prepared with locally sourced ingredients.

During an indigenous community immersion experience, visitors have the chance to learn about the indigenous people’s profound relationship with nature and their deep understanding of sustainable practices. Indigenous communities often serve as guardians of vast natural territories, integrating conservation with their traditional way of life.

By participating in these programs, travelers not only contribute to the economic well-being of the communities but also support the preservation of indigenous languages, cultural practices, and ancestral wisdom. The income generated from community tourism initiatives helps sustain the communities, providing them with opportunities to maintain their cultural heritage and improve their quality of life.

Respect and cultural sensitivity are essential when engaging with indigenous communities. Visitors should approach these experiences with an open mind and a willingness to learn, appreciating the wisdom and knowledge that community members can share.

In choosing an indigenous community immersion experience, opt for programs that have been developed in consultation with the communities themselves. This ensures that the experiences are authentic, respectful, and mutually beneficial.

An indigenous community immersion experience in Ecuador offers a unique opportunity to learn, connect, and appreciate the richness of indigenous cultures. It provides a platform for fostering cultural understanding, supporting local communities, and celebrating the diverse heritage that makes Ecuador a truly remarkable destination.

The cloud forests of Mindo provide a unique habitat for over 500 species of birds, including several endemic and endangered species. From colorful toucans and hummingbirds to elusive motmots and tanagers, the diversity and abundance of birdlife in Mindo is simply awe-inspiring.

Guides in Mindo have excellent spotting skills and are adept at identifying bird calls, making it easier to locate and observe elusive species. They can share fascinating facts about the unique behaviors, migration patterns, and ecological roles of the birds found in the cloud forest.

Popular birdwatching spots in Mindo include the Mindo-Nambillo Ecological Reserve and the famous “cock of the rock” lek, where visitors have the opportunity to witness the stunning courtship displays of the Andean cock-of-the-rock.

Mindo is also renowned for its hummingbirds, with numerous feeders and gardens attracting these tiny but vibrant creatures. Observing their acrobatic flights and iridescent plumage up close is a highlight for any bird enthusiast.

Aside from the diverse birdlife, the cloud forests of Mindo offer a serene and breathtaking natural environment. The lush vegetation and misty atmosphere create a tranquil setting perfect for immersing oneself in the sights and sounds of nature.

Sustainable Fishing Tours

Ecuador is blessed with a rich coastline that offers plentiful opportunities for fishing enthusiasts. However, as the world faces increasing environmental challenges, it has become crucial to prioritize sustainable fishing practices to protect the delicate marine ecosystems. Ecuador has taken significant steps in promoting sustainable fishing tours, which allow visitors to enjoy this recreational activity while minimizing the impact on the oceans.

Sustainable fishing tours in Ecuador adhere to strict guidelines and regulations to ensure the preservation of fish populations and marine biodiversity. These tours prioritize catch-and-release practices or focus on sustainable fishing methods that promote the long-term health of the marine ecosystem.

Visitors can participate in guided fishing expeditions led by experienced captains and conservation-oriented guides. These experts provide valuable insights into responsible angling techniques and the importance of protecting vulnerable species. They also educate participants on the significance of maintaining healthy fish populations for the equilibrium of the oceans.

During sustainable fishing tours, visitors can venture out into the Pacific Ocean or explore the intricate network of mangroves and estuaries. These diverse habitats are home to a wide variety of fish species, including snapper, marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi, and snook.

By practicing catch-and-release, where fish are promptly returned to the water after being caught, visitors can enjoy the thrill of the fishing experience while ensuring the survival and sustainability of fish populations. The use of barbless hooks and circle hooks further minimizes harm to fish, enhancing the ecological integrity of the fishing activity.

Moreover, sustainable fishing tours offer opportunities to learn about responsible seafood consumption and support local communities. Visitors can engage with local fishermen, gain insight into their traditional fishing methods, and even participate in community-led conservation efforts.

Choosing a sustainable fishing tour not only provides an enjoyable and educational experience but also contributes to the ongoing conservation initiatives in Ecuador. The revenue generated from these tours supports marine conservation projects, helps create alternative livelihoods for local communities, and raises awareness about the importance of sustainable fishing practices.

By promoting sustainable fishing practices, Ecuador aims to balance the economic benefits of fishing tourism with the long-term health and resilience of its oceans. Sustainable fishing tours offer a unique opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the marine environment and actively contribute to its preservation for generations to come.

Ecuador stands as a beacon of sustainability and environmental stewardship, offering a diverse range of ecotourism activities that delight and educate visitors from around the world. From the enchanting Amazon rainforest to the captivating Galapagos Islands, Ecuador provides a plethora of opportunities to experience and contribute to the preservation of its unique natural wonders.

Best Galapagos Tours in 2019

Best Galapagos Tours for 2019

Sustainable tourism in Ecuador is continually increasing, with lots of eco friendly hotels and lodges around. There are so many places like this that it is even possible to take eco-friendly tours in Ecuador, staying at places that focus on sustainable tourism and conservation efforts. Smart business owners understand that many of the reasons that travelers visit Ecuador are related to the environment that they get to visit, and equally that it is right to protect the environment for future generations. Tourists and locals want to see an array of animals in the rainforest, or a diversity of bird life in the cloud forest. The best way to achieve this is to focus on eco- friendliness so that the environment people come to visit is not destroyed. This is great news for both eco-tourism and the environment in Ecuador. Here are some eco-friendly hotels and lodges you might have an interest in visiting.

Eco-Friendly Lodges in the Forest

Set in the Choco-Andean forest in Ecuador, Mashpi Lodge is often considered one of the most eco friendly lodges in Ecuador, and it has this reputation with good reason. While it is extremely luxurious, it has been built to blend in with the forest surrounding it, and the owners continue to buy more land to avoid land being converted to damaging uses for the ecosystem, such as logging. Great efforts were made to avoid disrupting the forest when the hotel was being built, and conservation efforts are still underway today. While staying at Mashpi Lodge, guests enjoy the feeling of being in the canopy, brought about by the clever use of windows at this eco-friendly hotel.

In the cloud forest area of Ecuador in Mindo , El Monte Sustainable Lodge offers a unique eco-lodge experience in Ecuador. The lodge has a strong environmental philosophy and it aims to protect the forest, ensuring that tourism is low impact. In particular only a small number of guests can stay here, and this helps to reduce the environmental impact of this Ecuador eco-hotel. To reduce the environmental impact further, the food here is mostly vegetarian, and the hotel will not serve beef at all due to the fact that this is very inefficient to produce and has led to the destruction of tropical forests.

Meanwhile, in the Amazon, visitors might like to visit La Selva , an Amazon eco-lodge and spa. It is located in one of the most biodiverse places in the world, and is considered to be a premium eco lodge in Ecuador. Tourism is conducted in a manner that is considered eco-friendly and sustainable, and all interactions, whether with local people or wildlife aim to be responsible. With local communities, the goal is that the relationship with the lodge is mutually beneficial. Aside from anything else, this is a lovely place to stay, set as it is on Lake Garzacocha. Here you can enjoy birdwatching, or watching the local wildlife going about its business as you relax with a cold drink.

Ecotourism in Ecuador

swing-banos

The small Andean country of Ecuador is packed full of diverse eco-systems and exotic wildlife. Consisting of three distinct terrains: the Andes Mountains, the Amazon rainforest and the Pacific coastline, this country of 12 million has much to offer the ecotourist. In addition to the newer ecotours available on the mainland, the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador have been offering ecotours for many years.

Significance

While tourism that focused on an awareness of the natural beauty of Ecuador has been a major business for many years, it was only recently that the Ecuadorian Ecotourism Association sought to standardize the industry by defining the term. According to Piedra Blanca, an Ecuadorian community ecotourism project that offers ecotours, ecotourism is defined as tourism that benefits the community, the wildlife, the ecosystem and the traveler. Generally, it has come to mean that respect is paid to the local ecosystem by disturbing the area as little as possible thus giving the ecotourist a rich and varied experience not available in more conventional forms of tourism.

Andes Mountains

The Andes Mountains that run through the center of Ecuador are home to the Quichua people, descendants of the Inca. The rugged terrain is dotted with active volcanoes, spectacular waterfalls and deep water lakes. The numerous national parks in the region are available for self-guided ecotourism, but guides can be hired in the towns along the main roads. Tungurahua Volcano, the world’s most active volcano, has a number of nearby paths and is a popular area for bird watching as well. National Park Llanganate features hiking trails and lagoons, while Peña Blanca offers ecotourists glimpses of magnificent waterfalls amidst the foggy cloud forest.

Amazon Basin

East of the Andes Mountains lies the Amazon Basin. This rainforest in the eastern edge of the Amazon region is home to many ecotourism businesses. While the area is sparsely populated with only 5 percent of Equador’s population living there, many indigenous communities dot the rainforest and a number of hotels and hosterias catering to ecotourists can be found. The Butterfly EcoLodge is one of several hotels that offer ecotours and promotes sustainable living. It is located on 550 acres of remote rainforest land and is run by Health & Habitat, a non-profit group dedicated to protecting the rainforest.

Coast and Galapagos Islands

The Pacific coast of Ecuador offers a number of ecotour opportunities. The area is known for white water rafting on the tributary rivers, and whale watching tours are available near the island of La Plata. One of the country’s oldest ecotour agencies, Nuevo Mundo, offers coastal bird watching and cultural tours. Off the coast, the Galapagos Islands are tightly controlled by the Ecuadorian government to reduce the risk of habitat destruction and only approved tour agencies can bring ecotourists to the islands to see rare native animals like Galapagos turtles, the marine iguana and Galapagos penguins.

Considerations

Although it is tempting for the ecotourist to set out alone in Ecuador, it’s not recommended. Reliable ecotour guides and agencies are found in all regions at a variety of prices, and it is a good idea to have a knowledgeable guide. The numerous national parks as well as public and private land often will have trails and self-guided tours, but when in doubt of the safety of an area, avoid it or seek out a professional guide.

For more than 20 years we have traveled to all corners of Ecuador, while also traveling the world. We have dedicated our lives to promoting responsible tourism and bringing visitors from all over the planet to our beautiful country. Since 1994 we have developed unique lodges, created operations in unique natural areas and designed tailor-made trips for thousands of foreign travelers. Through our innovation and passion for showing Ecuador to the world, we have received international accolades and recognition. Our development of sustainable tourism experiences with local communities in the Amazon, Andes, Pacific Coast and our beloved Galapagos Islands have enriched travelers’ lives as well as the lives of our local citizens. We strongly believe in the power that tourism has to generate income in a way that respects the environment, supports the local economy and enhances the cultural and natural wealth of our local communities.

Our greatest successes at Destination Ecuador have always been showing guests Ecuador as it is – sharing our unique cultures, visiting remote, undiscovered places, taking the time to enjoy sunrises in the wonderful Andean snow-capped mountains, savoring twilights in the Amazon and exploring the amazing underwater world of our enchanted islands in Galapagos – always in the company of the local communities that act as guardians of our heritage.

THIS IS ECUADOR NOW!

WHY VISITING THE NATIONAL PARKS OF ECUADOR?

ECUADOR TRAVEL AGENCY: ECO TOURISM TO HIGHLIGHTS & NATIONAL PARKS: Isla de la plata excursion.

10 REASONS TO MAKE THE NATIONAL PARKS ECO TOURS

 ecuador with parks & tribes:.

First of all, because nobody else organizes such tours;

Only Parks & Tribes actually knows the majority of the protected areas of Ecuador;

We trained a limited number of guides to accompany the tours;

We always strife for the most economical solutions in pleasant 3 star hotel environments;

It is the mission of Parks & Tribes to help protect the protected areas of Ecuador;

Senior conservation biologists of Parks & Tribes who selected the national parks system of Ecuador in the 1970s developed the programs!;

The only tour operator with an Indian tribe as owners ( Cofan Indians );

Our mission is to protect, not to make money, therefore we strife for economical prices so that more people can participate;

Significant group discounts;

Major Combi-Discount National Parks Ecotours Ecuador and visit the Galapagos Islands . Ask for details!

WHY WE CREATED PARKS AND TRIBES

How it began.

Our jungle biologists started organizing national park tours in the nineteen eighties because we were concerned that many ecotourism operators of ECOTOURS mostly organize tours outside the national parks, taking their guests to easily reachable patches of secondary forest. By doing so, such tour operators actually compete with the really important official nature reserves. We want to bring you to the national parks, where you can enjoy the best nature in Ecuador.

We also feel that national parks need to create employment and economic opportunities for communities living near the protected areas. By organizing national parks tours, we let you enjoy the most fantastic nature of the country thereby contributing to the conservation of Ecuador's fantastic national parks while helping local communities at the same time. So, by coming along on our tours, you get to see the best of the best  Ecuador has to offer, while conserving pristine nature and helping communities.

We try to organize our tours as economically as possible, but you should be aware that hiring transportation with a guide costs us about $200 per day. So you can calculate that we are not making a lot of money on our pricing .

ECUADOR TRAVEL AGENCY: ECO TOURISM TO HIGHLIGHTS & NATIONAL PARKS: Pampas Grass, Cortaderia jubata, is very common in the park.

About the Cuyabeno Reserve

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is the second largest national park in Ecuador with total of 603,380 ha. The reserve has a variety of different ecosystems for example primary rainforest, swamps, floated and semi floated forest. The area has one of the highest level of biodiversity in the world so it is a good place for spotting wildlife.

The Cuyabeno river and the tributary (Ant River) make a river system which is fun to explore on a canoe. There are also a system of 14 lakes, perfect places to see the sunset.

Cuyabeno Reserve provides habitat for over 500 species of birds, 10 species of monkeys, anacondas, caimans, jaguars, pink river dolphins, manatees, fishes (for example arapaima and piranha), armadillos and many more animals. The Siona people is an indigenous tribe living on the area. On the community day you will visit the Siona tribe, learn how they prepare traditional yucca bread and meet a Shaman from the community. The Shaman will give a demonstration about shamanism and the healing traditions that the Siona´s have been practicing for a long time. Eco-tourism benefits the local Siona communities by giving them jobs.

Cuyabeno Reserve has two seasons. The rainy season is from March to August and the dry season is from September to February. Also during the dry season it can rain because the climate in the Cuyabeno Reserve is a tropical rain-forest. The tours are done all year round.
