How to Use the My Disney Experience Mobile App and MagicBands

If you haven't been to  Walt Disney World in a while, you'll want to know about an innovative planning tool called My Disney Experience , which replaced the old paper ticketing system by combining a powerful smartphone app with wearable technology.

For families, the result is a truly seamless experience that starts with your pre-trip planning, letting you schedule FastPass+ and dining options , and continues during your stay at Walt Disney World.

Set Up Your My Disney Experience Account

My Disney Experience revolutionizes the Walt Disney World vacation by bundling nearly every aspect of your trip together. The process can begin as soon as you've booked your trip and have a hotel and ticket reservation.

The My Disney Experience website  allows you to set up your account and download the free My Disney Experience mobile app (available for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices).

Once you're signed in, just enter your reservation info. Each family member can choose a different colored MagicBand—cards are also available—and have it personalized with a first name. Disney will send your MagicBands to your home (though they don't ship to all countries), and in the meantime, you can start planning.

Schedule FastPass+ and Dining Experiences

What Walt Disney World experiences are you most looking forward to? You can program them into your day with FastPass+ , a reservation system that lets you bypass the regular lines at popular rides and attractions.

FastPass+ replaced the paper FastPass system that Walt Disney World used for decades. If you will be staying at a Disney Resort, you can make plans 60 days in advance. If you're not staying at a Disney Resort but have bought tickets online, you can make plans 30 days in advance.

For each day of your ticket, you can use FastPass+ to designate advance times to visit three attractions of your choice in a single park. Note that you can use FastPass+ for every Disney experience—for popular rides,  character greetings , parades, shows, and fireworks.

You can also use the My Disney Experience mobile app to make advance dining reservations and even pre-order a meal in venues such as the wildly popular Be Our Guest restaurant in the Magic Kingdom.

In addition, once at Walt Disney World, you can use your app to pre-order meals with Mobile Order at select restaurants in the parks.

MagicBands Are the Ultimate Disney Accessory

Think of your MagicBand as your key to Walt Disney World. It's a rubber bracelet containing a computer chip that holds all the components of your Walt Disney World vacation— theme park  ticket , room key, FastPass+ choices, dining reservations, Disney PhotoPass—and it also acts as a resort charge card.

All of these plans are stored on your MagicBands, so keep them safe and remember to pack them for your trip. Once you arrive at Walt Disney World, you can also create a personalized MagicBand at the Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. in the Magic Kingdom Park.

Check Into Your Hotel

The My Disney Experience mobile app is particularly handy for families that want to take advantage of the many perks of staying at Walt Disney World Resort hotel.

If you're staying at an official Disney World resort, you can use your MagicBands to check into your hotel and enter your hotel room. The app has a feature called “My Resort Dashboard,” which gives you access to your reservation details all in one place, including the ability to see room number, theme, building, and floor once you have your room assignment and even check in from the app.

“My Resort Dashboard” even gives you directions to your resort using Disney transportation options, a map showing you the location of your room, and a link to directly call the Resort Front Desk if you need further assistance during your stay.

Enter Turnstile-Free Theme Parks

The turnstiles at Walt Disney World's park entrances were replaced with sleek MagicBand readers. Just touch the Mickey head on your MagicBand to the Mickey head on the reader and it turns green. It's fun for kids to watch the famous mouse's head light up.

Get Your Bearings and Find More Fun

The My Disney Experience mobile app opens right to the park maps to help you find attractions, restaurants, restrooms, and more. A section called “Spotlight” highlights new park experiences and entertainment offerings to help you find the latest in entertainment at the parks.

Make Purchases

Gift shops and vendors around Walt Disney World are also equipped with MagicBand readers. Instead of swiping a room key or a credit card, you simply place your MagicBand against the reader and type in your PIN.

If your MagicBand is lost or stolen, nobody can make a purchase without your PIN. You can immediately deactivate your band using the My Disney Experience mobile app on your smartphone or iPad until you can get another MagicBand.

It's important to know that your credit card information and other personal data is not stored in your MagicBand. Instead, the readers access an encrypted database of your stored information with a randomly assigned code that securely links to your account.

Use the App to Check Wait Times and Much More

The My Disney Experience mobile app can give you current wait times at attractions and character greetings in the park. Use the map view to find nearby dining venues, restrooms, and other amenities.

Don't worry about being locked into your plans. When you're at Walt Disney World, you can use the app to change your FastPass+ and dining choices on the fly.

After you have completed your three FastPass+ experiences, you can get three more FastPass+ choices for later that same day. You can also "park hop" in a second park with your fourth FastPass+ of the day.

Editor's Note

If you want to know how to plan a trip to Disney World, you've come to the right place. This guide includes tips for choosing the right Disney World hotel for your budget, deciding which ticket type is right for you, determining which extras are worth splurging on and how to plan a trip that's fun and memorable without too much stress along the way.

With four theme parks, two water parks, more than 25 on-site hotels, over 200 dining locations and more attractions, experiences, shows and shops than we can list here, the best way to build a magical Disney World vacation is with planning, preparation and realistic expectations.

Planning a trip to Disney World should be fun and build excitement for your upcoming trip, and this guide can help.

How to start planning your trip to Disney World

disney travel experience

There are a few questions you will want to answer early in the process of planning your Disney World vacation.

  • What is your budget? Your budget will determine most other factors of your vacation, including where you stay and how many days you visit. How much it will cost you to go to Disney World really can vary widely based on the choices you make.
  • When will you go? You may be at the mercy of work or school schedules, but if you have the flexibility, you can plan your trip when crowds are smaller or the weather is better. The summer can be very hot and rainy, the week between Christmas and New Year's is one of the busiest and weekdays when most kids are in school are often the least busy days.
  • Where will you stay? You will typically pay more to stay in one of Disney's on-site hotels, especially at the moderate and deluxe tiers, but you'll also get perks like early theme park entry. Before you choose, you'll want to consider your budget, whether you want a themed room like the Royal Guest Rooms at Disney's Port Orleans Resort – Riverside and if you want to be located near a certain Disney park. Pro tip: Renting Disney Vacation Club points can help you stay at a deluxe hotel for a moderate price.
  • Which parks will you visit on which days? Depending on the length of your vacation, you may need to prioritize which parks you plan to visit. This will also influence whether you purchase one-park-per-day or Park Hopper tickets that allow you to visit multiple parks daily. If you have little kids, be sure your family will have the stamina for multiple parks per day before shelling out the extra cash to hop.
  • Where will you dine? Popular Disney dining reservations are snatched up almost as soon as they become available. You'll want to plan ahead for any character dining or other table service restaurants, so you don't miss out.

It is important to book your hotel, dining and theme park tickets as early as possible for the best rates and availability. Disney also periodically releases special offers on hotels and vacation packages that you can often apply even if you have already made your reservations.

Related: Are the Disney Visa credit cards worth it?

We will dig deeper into each of these topics in this guide. Once you have a rough outline of your vacation based on the questions above, here are important dates to keep in mind so you can make your Disney dream a reality.

How soon can you book a Disney World hotel?

disney travel experience

Disney releases hotel availability periodically, so there is no exact date that Disney hotel reservations become available. You can currently book Disney World hotel stays through Dec. 31, 2024.

Disney typically opens reservations for the following year around May or June, so you can expect to see 2025 availability around that time. If your plans change, you can cancel your room-only reservation up to five days in advance of arrival for a full refund. Ticket and hotel vacation packages must be canceled 30 days in advance to receive a full refund.

When can you purchase Disney World tickets?

disney travel experience

Disney World tickets follow the same availability calendar as Disney hotel reservations. You can purchase tickets (or vacation packages including a hotel and tickets) through Dec. 31, 2024. Disney typically releases tickets for the following year around May or June, so you can expect to see 2025 availability around that time.

All tickets are date-based, and the price of one-day tickets also varies by park. You can purchase your tickets any time before you visit; the price won't change regardless of how long you wait. Theme park tickets are nonrefundable, but you may be able to change your ticket date if your plans change.

Until Jan. 9, 2024, you must have a Disney ticket and make a theme park reservation to enter a Disney park.

When do Disney World dining reservations become available?

disney travel experience

You can begin making dining reservations 60 days prior to your visit. If you are staying in a Disney World hotel, you can make dining reservations 60 days before your check-in day for your entire stay (up to 10 days).

Reservations open on Disney's website or the My Disney Experience app between 5:45 a.m. and 6 a.m. EST or you can call 407-939-DINE beginning at 7 a.m. EST, but coveted reservations may already be snatched up by that time. You can cancel most Disney World dining reservations up to two hours before your reservation. Exceptions will be noted in the confirmation email you receive at the time of booking.

If you're not yet sure where to eat, here are our favorite restaurants at Disney World .

What are the 4 parks at Disney World?

Each of Disney World's four theme parks is uniquely themed and packed with fun. You can learn more about each park, including attractions, shows, parade times and interactive maps to help you find your way around in the My Disney Experience app.

Here's a bit more information about each and some tips for choosing the right ticket type to visit them all.

Magic Kingdom

disney travel experience

Open since 1971, Magic Kingdom is Disney World's original theme park. This park is a world of fairy tales and fantasy, where you'll find five themed lands — Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland and Liberty Square.

Magic Kingdom is home to some of Disney's most iconic attractions, including Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Peter Pan's Flight and the Haunted Mansion, but also exciting new rides like Tron: Lightcycle Run and the soon-to-open Tiana's Bayou Adventure .

disney travel experience

Epcot opened in 1982 and has changed drastically in the four decades since. Epcot's core message, however, hasn't changed: sparking visitors' imaginations through science, technology, nature and the human experience. The park is sectioned into "neighborhoods" — World Celebration, World Nature, World Discovery and World Showcase, where you can visit pavilions that celebrate the arts, culture and customs of 11 countries around the world.

There are a lot of new things to see at Epcot, including Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind , Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana and the all-new fireworks spectacular Luminous – The Symphony of Us .

Disney's Hollywood Studios

disney travel experience

Disney's Hollywood Studios is a movie-themed park that has lands and attractions inspired by blockbuster films and beloved Disney characters. In Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge , you can pilot the Millennium Falcon and meet familiar (and furry) faces like Kylo Ren, Chewbacca and Rey.

In Toy Story Land, visitors shrink to the size of Woody, Buzz, Jessie (who you can meet here, by the way) and Andy's other toys. The land's Slinky Dog Dash coaster is a family-friendly ride that's perfect for a kid's first roller coaster.

Outside of the lands themed to specific films, much of the park evokes an old-Hollywood glamour that makes you feel like a bona fide movie star. In these areas, you'll find some of the park's most iconic shows and attractions are also some of its longest-running, like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror drop ride, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular .

Disney's Animal Kingdom

disney travel experience

More than 2,000 animals — from about 300 species — call Disney's Animal Kingdom "home," but this is not a zoo. However, you can visit many of these animals via walking trails, the Kilimanjaro Safaris ride and even a petting zoo.

In addition to the creatures and landscapes found on Earth, you can visit another planet at Pandora — The World of Avatar or go back in time at DinoLand U.S.A. The animals aren't the only things that are "wild" at Animal Kingdom — Expedition Everest is a thrilling coaster; Avatar Flight of Passage puts you on the back of a banshee as you fly over Pandora; and Dinosaur sends you careening through the Cretaceous Period in an off-road vehicle.

What type of Disney tickets should I buy?

Disney world base tickets.

You can purchase one-day or multi-day Disney World tickets. All tickets are date-based, and the price varies depending on the date of your visit. If you purchase a one-day ticket, the price will also vary based on which park you plan to visit, with Magic Kingdom being the most expensive.

Disney World Park Hopper tickets

A base ticket only gets you into one park per day. If you want to visit multiple parks on the same day, you will need to purchase the Park Hopper option with your ticket (you can also add it on in person after you arrive). You can save money by only visiting one park per day, but it does limit how much you can see and do during your vacation.

A Park Hopper Plus ticket includes two visits to either Disney's golf courses, miniature golf courses or water parks, but this is only worth it if you know you will use it all.

Disney World special event tickets

Some of Disney's after-hours events , like Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party , require a separate ticket. The park is only open to guests with special event tickets during these events. If you plan on visiting for one of these parties, you may be able to forgo a general admission ticket that day and utilize your special event ticket, as you can usually get into the park a few hours before the party starts.

Disney World ticket add-ons

There are two major ticket add-ons that you should consider. Both can be worth it but will add to the cost of your vacation.

disney travel experience

The first add-on you might want to strongly consider is Disney Genie+ . This skip-the-line service allows you to skip the standby line and enjoy shorter wait times for rides by utilizing Disney's Lightning Lanes.

Currently, you can only purchase it on the day of your visit beginning at 7 a.m. and the price ranges between $15 and $35 per person, per day. A handful of attractions at each park require a separate individual Lightning Lane purchase to skip the line, often for the newest rides, but many rides are available with Genie+. You don't need to purchase Genie+ to buy individual Lightning Lane selections and vice versa. The individual Lightning Lane attraction pricing varies by attraction but typically ranges between $7 and $25 per person per attraction for rides like Tron: Lightcycle Run and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

disney travel experience

Another popular add-on is Disney's Memory Maker . Memory Maker gives you unlimited downloads of pictures taken by PhotoPass photographers during your vacation and on-ride photos. You can purchase a one-day Memory Maker for short visits or a multi-day Memory Maker which covers your entire vacation. You can save $25 on a multi-day Memory Maker when you purchase at least three days prior to your visit, so it's best to purchase it when you buy your tickets.

How to get discounted Disney World tickets

Aside from Disney's own discounts, you can sometimes save money on Disney tickets by purchasing them from an authorized third-party reseller. There are a few reputable sources out there for Disney World tickets, but our go-to is Undercover Tourist . Depending on your ticket type, you can usually save between $5 and $100. One of the best ways to save money with Undercover Tourist is when Disney World raises ticket prices , which usually happens at least once per year. Undercover Tourist typically has a limited number of existing ticket stock available at the old prices while supplies last.

Related: We saved every receipt — here's how much it actually costs to go to Disney World

If you are a Florida resident or are an active or retired U.S. military member , there are generous discounted Disney World tickets available directly through Disney's website.

You can also use points to pay for your Disney tickets , and that's a strategy we strongly recommend to keep costs down. For example, with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , you can earn a welcome bonus of 75,000 points after spending $4,000 within the first three months of having the card. You can use those 75k points as the same as $750 towards travel . And while ticket-only packages from Disney World typically don't code as a travel charge, buying them from Undercover Tourist — or as part of a larger hotel and ticket package directly from Disney — typically does code as a travel charge, so you could save $750 just like that.

Is booking a Disney vacation package a good idea?

If you are staying in one of Disney World's on-site hotels or a certified " Disney World Good Neighbor " hotel, you have the option to bundle your hotel stay and theme park tickets into a Disney vacation package. Normally, these packages are not discounted, but they can be a great value if Disney runs any special vacation package promotions .

Aside from discounts (and the fact that it all likely codes as a travel charge for point-redemption purposes), there's one major reason to book a vacation package: When you purchase your tickets and hotel together, you only have to pay a $200 deposit at the time of booking. Payment in full is due 30 days prior to arrival. If you purchase your tickets separately from your hotel stay, you will have to pay the full amount at the time of purchase.

This is another great example of why you should book through an authorized Disney travel planner who can compare prices for you and keep an eye out for discounts.

When is the best time to visit Disney World?

Do you want the lowest crowds or the best weather? Do you want to attend a Halloween party or see Magic Kingdom's 65-foot-tall Christmas tree ?

The best time to visit Disney World depends on your reason for visiting.

disney travel experience

If you want moderate temperatures and less chance of rain, you may want to plan your visit between October and December. If you want shorter waits, your best bets are late January, early May or just after Thanksgiving before the crowds descend upon the parks for winter break. Of course, weekdays typically see lower crowds than weekends and school breaks.

Or, if you are planning a Disney World vacation on a budget, opt for midweek dates in August and September 2024, when prices start at $109 for a one-day ticket.

What's the best way to get to Disney World?

Getting to Orlando and getting to Disney World after arriving are two different topics, so let's look at each.

What is the closest airport?

The closest airport to Walt Disney World is Orlando International Airport (MCO). Most major airlines fly into MCO, and you can reach Disney World in about 25 to 30 minutes from the airport, depending on traffic. If you are flying Allegiant or Sun Country Airlines, you'll fly into Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB). SFB is smaller than MCO and farther from Disney World. From SFB, it is about a 45-minute drive to Disney World.

What is the best way to get to Disney World from the airport?

Because of its size and proximity to Disney World, MCO has more and better options to help you get between the airport and Disney World.

From Orlando International Airport or Orlando Sanford International Airport, you can rent a car or use a ride-hailing service like Uber or Lyft. If you do rent a car from MCO, you can forgo paying tolls through the car rental company (which often comes with an additional fee) and pick up a Visitor Toll Pass to save on tolls during your trip.

disney travel experience

Disney no longer charges a parking fee for overnight hotel guests, so if you rent a car, you can park at your hotel and drive to Disney's theme parks without additional fees. Keep in mind that you may not need a car if you don't plan on leaving Disney property after you arrive. Disney has a robust internal transportation system that operates between its on-site hotels and theme parks, water parks and Disney Springs.

You can also use Disney's official airport shuttle, Mears Connect , from MCO.

Mears Connect is a shuttle service that picks you up from MCO and will drop you off at official Disney World hotels and a handful of nearby hotels. Pricing starts at $16 one-way for adults and $13 one-way for children. Mears Connect offers shared shuttles, where you will stop at multiple Disney hotels on the way to your own. You can pay an additional fee for an "express shuttle" that takes you direct to your resort. The easiest way to reserve your ride is online through the Mears Connect website.

What is the best way to get around Disney World?

If you are staying on Walt Disney World property, you can utilize Disney's complimentary transportation for travel between your resort and Disney's theme parks, water parks and Disney Springs. Disney offers transportation by bus, boat, Monorail and Disney Skyliner gondola system. Which transportation options you have access to will depend on which hotel you are staying in.

All Disney hotels offer regularly scheduled bus transportation around the resort. Transportation begins 45 minutes prior to the theme park opening and up to one hour after the theme park closing.

disney travel experience

Guests of Disney's Magic Kingdom area resorts — Disney's Polynesian Village Resort, Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa — can use boat or Monorail transportation to travel to the Magic Kingdom. There is also a monorail line that will take you to the Transportation and Ticket Center, where you can transfer to a separate Monorail line that goes to Epcot. These hotels also offer a walking path to Magic Kingdom.

Guests of Disney's Riviera Resort, Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney's Art of Animation Resort and Disney's Pop Century Resort can use the Disney Skyliner gondolas to travel to Disney's Hollywood Studios and Epcot. All Disney World visitors can also use Disney Skyliner to travel between these two parks, regardless of where you are staying. It's a fun and scenic way to get around the resort.

disney travel experience

Many Disney World hotels also offer ferry boat transportation to nearby parks. The BoardWalk area hotels, for example, offer boat transportation to Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios. Fort Wilderness, Disney's Wilderness Lodge and others offer boat service to the Magic Kingdom. You can view a full list on Disney's website . You can also walk to Epcot or Hollywood Studios from any BoardWalk area hotel.

Whichever transportation option you choose, you can view the schedule, routes and stop locations in the My Disney Experience app or on video monitors at each stop location.

You can also utilize Disney's Minnie Van service for door-to-door (or door-to-front gate, as it were) service between your hotel and Disney's theme parks. You can book these private rides in red-and-white polka-dot vans directly through the Lyft app. Accessible rides and child safety seats are available.

disney travel experience

Though not "official" Disney World hotels, Walt Disney World Swan, Dolphin and Swan Reserve hotel guests have access to Disney's complimentary ferry boat service to Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios. A walking path is also available. These resorts also operate their own shuttles to Disney's theme parks, which pick up approximately every 20 to 25 minutes throughout the day.

Disney Springs hotels operate their own shuttle services, independent of Disney's transportation. If you are staying at one of these hotels, you can inquire about scheduling and pick-up times at the front desk.

What's the best place to stay on a Disney vacation?

disney travel experience

There are more than two dozen Disney World hotels to choose from, so your main considerations will be your budget and what type of hotel experience you are after. Whether you want over-the-top Disney theming, an upscale cabin in the woods or a luxury villa with access to a club lounge, you can find it at Disney World.

Disney offers three hotel tiers: Value, Moderate and Deluxe.

Value Disney resorts are the most affordable, with prices ranging between $125 and $300 per night. Value resorts offer quick-service, cafeteria-style dining outlets and large pools but don't have full-service restaurants or pool amenities like waterslides and hot tubs.

On average, Moderate Disney resorts run between $250 and $400 and offer amenities you won't find at Value Disney resorts. Some have full-service restaurants, and the pools are better-themed and equipped with waterslides. Many of them are more centrally located near Disney's theme parks, as well.

Deluxe Disney resorts are the most expensive, ranging between $400 to $700 per night and up for a standard room, but they also have the best locations, amenities and dining. You can expect large, well-furnished guest rooms, pool complexes with hot tubs, waterslides and beach areas, multiple full-service restaurants, spas and more.

disney travel experience

Regardless of which hotel you choose, Disney's on-site hotels offer perks to enhance your stay:

  • A 30-minute jumpstart on your day with Disney's Early Theme Park Entry benefit
  • The ability to purchase individual Lightning Lanes for eligible rides begins at 7 a.m. on the day of your visit (non-resort guests can't do this until the park opens)
  • Complimentary hotel and theme park parking
  • Extended Evening Theme Park Hours for guests staying at Disney Deluxe Resort Hotels on select nights (this benefit is also available to guests of Walt Disney World Swan, Dolphin and Swan Reserve hotels, as well as Shades of Green)

Best hotels at Disney World

The best Disney World hotel for you depends on what you are looking for in a hotel stay. If you don't plan on spending much time in your room, you can save a lot of money by staying in a Value resort. If you plan on spending part of your vacation enjoying hotel amenities like the pool and restaurants, you may want to choose a Moderate or Deluxe resort. Or, if you have a large family that won't be comfortable in a standard room, one of Disney's family suites might be your best bet.

Here are a few of our favorites:

Best Disney World resort if you are on a budget: Disney's Pop Century Resort may not be the most glamorous hotel at Disney, but the kitschy 1950s through 1990s theming and the starting price of around $200 per night will surely put a smile on your face. This resort has three pools, a playground and an arcade. Guest rooms are furnished with either one king bed or a queen bed and a space-saving table that folds out into a bed. It is also one of two Value resorts with Skyliner gondola access to Epcot and Hollywood Studios.

disney travel experience

Best Disney World resort for large families : Disney's Art of Animation Resort is in Disney's more affordable Value category and has family suites themed to popular Disney films like "Cars," "The Lion King" and "Finding Nemo" that sleep up to six guests. The pool here is the largest at any Disney World resort, and you can take the Disney Skyliner gondolas to Epcot and Hollywood Studios. Standard rooms are also available.

Best Disney World resort for swimming : Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Resorts are sister properties near Epcot. The two resorts have rooms that average around $600 per night and share access to Stormalong Bay, the best pool at Disney World . Stormalong Bay is really more than a pool, it is a water park with sand-bottomed pools, a lazy river, an activities pool with a volleyball net and daily pool games and a shipwreck-themed waterslide.

disney travel experience

Best Disney World resort for a luxury stay : If the sky is the limit for your Walt Disney World vacation budget, the Copper Creek Cabins at Disney's Wilderness Lodge are some of the finest accommodations you can choose. With two bedrooms, a fireplace, a screened-in porch, a hot tub and lakeside views, these cabins are anything but rustic. The privacy offers you a chance to wind down after a long Disney day, but you are still close enough to take a boat ride to Magic Kingdom and enjoy the amenities and dining in the resort's main lobby.

If you are leaning toward a luxury Disney stay, you may be able to save money by renting Disney Vacation Club (DVC) points. DVC is Disney's version of a timeshare program. DVC members can rent out their points to non-members through sites like David's Vacation Club Rentals , helping you to save hundreds of dollars versus booking directly through Disney. The trade-off is that availability is limited and that the cancellation policies are much less flexible than if you make the reservation direct through Disney.

Best hotels near Disney World

Disney World also partners with a handful of off-site hotels where you can still take advantage of certain benefits like Early Theme Park Entry and complimentary transportation while also paying less than you would for an official Disney World hotel. These hotels also participate in major hotel points programs, so you can earn or redeem points for your stay.

disney travel experience

The Walt Disney World Swan, Dolphin and Swan Reserve hotels all participate in the Marriott Bonvoy program. While not technically Disney hotels, they are located on Disney property between Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios. If you are a Marriott Bonvoy elite member , these hotels offer benefits like complimentary upgrades, a welcome amenity and more.

Hardest Disney reservations to get (and how to get them)

disney travel experience

Many of these restaurants are quick-service or snack stands that don't require advance reservations, but there are a few popular restaurants that book up almost as quickly as reservations become available. If you want to dine with Disney royalty at Cinderella's Royal Table, for example, you'll want to make your reservation as soon as you can. Remember, that is 60 days prior to your visit — if you are staying at a Disney World hotel, you can make reservations for your entire vacation 60 days prior to your check-in day.

Other reservations that book up quickly include Storybook Dining at Artist Point , Space 220 at Epcot, California Grill, 'Ohana, Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater at Hollywood Studios and Topolino's Terrace, especially for the character breakfast. All of these have great food and atmosphere, making them popular for new and returning guests.

Best quick-service restaurants at Disney that don't require a reservation

Luckily, there are plenty of Disney restaurants with delicious food you can get your hands on without a reservation. Satuli Canteen in Pandora — The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom is consistently ranked as one of the best quick-service restaurants anywhere at Disney. The food is fresh, flavorful and surprisingly inexpensive. You can get a build-your-own bowl with beef, chicken or fish for less than $20.

Other must-try quick-service restaurants include Ronto Roasters at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge (the Ronto Breakfast Wrap is the best handheld meal at Disney!), Columbia Harbour House at Magic Kingdom for New England-inspired fare and Regal Eagle Smokehouse at Epcot for all things barbecue.

Using the Disney app to improve your dining experience

The My Disney Experience app is a must for your Disney World vacation for checking wait times, finding your way around and more. When it comes to dining, you can use it to find walk-up dining availability, score last-minute reservations, see what restaurants are nearby, and place mobile orders at select quick-service restaurants.

When you place a mobile order via the app, you choose what time you would like to pick up your order (with the option to modify if plans change). When you arrive at the restaurant, you can click "I'm here. Prepare my order," and you'll receive a notification on your phone when your food is ready.

The cost of dining at Disney can add up quickly, and Disney offers two dining plan options that may help you save money. The Disney Dining Plan lets you prepay for a specified number of meals and snacks for your Disney World vacation. You receive a certain number of meal and snack credits for each night of your stay.

The Disney Dining Plan is both convenient and flexible. By prepaying for your meals and snacks, you won't have to pull out your wallet for every meal and snack, and you aren't required to use a set number of credits each day. You can redeem them anytime during your stay in the way that best works for you.

disney travel experience

There are two options — the Disney Quick Service Dining Plan and the Disney Dining Plan. The first is a bit less expensive and allows for more flexibility. The second is best if you plan on more sit-down dining and character meals during your vacation.

Whether or not you can save money with a Disney Dining Plan depends on how you utilize the credits. It is possible to break even or come out ahead if you maximize the value of your credits and actually eat all of the food available on the plan. If you don't use all of your credits, you are essentially leaving money on the table, but our guide can help you out with the math.

How to save time in line at Disney World

Most Walt Disney World attractions offer a standby line. The only exceptions are new attractions, which will often offer a virtual queue for a limited time after opening. When Disney World is busy, though, standby lines for popular attractions can climb as high as two hours. Luckily, Disney has a service called Disney Genie+ that helps you skip the standby line and get on more attractions with shorter waits.

With Disney Genie+, you can skip the standby line and utilize a much shorter "Lightning Lane" for most attractions. You can only purchase this add-on service on the day of your visit, beginning at midnight (though you will likely be safe waiting until you wake up in the morning except on Disney's busiest days).

disney travel experience

The cost of Disney Genie+ varies per park and per day. The service starts at $15 per person per day and occasionally reaches a per-person price of $35 per day during the busy Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season or in April during spring break. You can purchase Genie+ for one of Disney World's four theme parks or a "multiple park" option valid at all four parks when you purchase through the My Disney Experience app.

Most attractions are included in the Disney Genie+ service, but one or two attractions at each park require a separate Lightning Lane purchase to skip the line. It's not necessary to purchase Genie+ to buy individual Lightning Lane selections and vice versa. The individual Lightning Lane attraction pricing varies by attraction but typically ranges between $7 and $25 per person, per attraction.

If you are staying in one of Disney's on-site hotels or in select "Good Neighbor" hotels, as mentioned in the section above, you can also save time in line by utilizing Early Theme Park Entry and/or Extended Evening Theme Park Hours. You can get into the parks 30 minutes early with the Early Entry benefit, but you actually want to arrive at the front gates 30-45 minutes before that time. This will give you time to get through security and to the roped-off area where they hold guests, making you one of the first in line to rush to your favorite ride when early entry starts.

If you or someone in your party has a disability that makes it difficult for you to wait in a traditional standby queue, you can also save time by registering for Disney's Disability Access Service (DAS). You need to start the registration process before your visit, and full instructions are available on Disney's website .

How to plan a Disney World trip on a budget

While sensational stories about $2,500 meals at Disney make for good headlines, it is totally possible to visit Disney World on a budget .

Related: Yes, you can visit Disney World on a budget: Here's how I did it

Here are some of the most important things you can do to make your Disney vacation budget manageable:

  • Stay at a Disney Value resort like Disney's All-Star Movies Resort or use Marriott points to stay at the Swan, Dolphin and Swan Reserve. Here are the best cards to get those points.
  • Utilize Disney's complimentary parking and transportation for on-site guests instead of renting a car.
  • Purchase groceries for some meals and snacks, and only buy one or two meals in the parks each day.
  • Don't visit the parks every day you are at Disney and stick to one park per day, avoiding park hopping. You can save on tickets by spending a day swimming or visiting Disney Springs.
  • Don't forget to periodically check Disney's website for discounts. Even after you book, you may be able to apply a hotel or vacation package discount that can save you even more money.
  • Be on the lookout for discounted Disney gift cards to help cover the cost of your trip and/or use points for the tickets.
  • Visit during less busy times of the year. Ticket prices are cheapest in August and September, with one-day tickets starting at $109.

Disney World pretrip checklist

disney travel experience

Now that you've determined your budget, purchased your tickets, booked your hotel and made a few dining reservations, your trip is nearly planned. There are some other details you'll need to consider to make your trip as magical as it should be. Here's our ultimate Disney World pre-trip checklist:

  • Pack accordingly : Depending on when you visit, you could be dealing with heat, humidity, afternoon showers, chilly temperatures or a mix of all of the above. It's important to pack comfortable shoes and clothing no matter when you visit, but you may also want rain gear, sun protection or a warm jacket, depending on the weather. You can read our full Disney World packing guide here .
  • Download the My Disney Experience app : This app is an invaluable tool that you will use daily during your visit. You can use it to check everything from wait times to walk-up dining availability. You can also use it to navigate the parks with turn-by-turn walking directions, purchase Disney Genie+ and individual Lightning Lanes and even open your hotel room door.
  • Check the park hours before your visit : You can view the park hours on the Walt Disney World website or the My Disney Experience app. Each park has separate opening and closing times, and parks occasionally close early for special events like Halloween and Christmas parties. When you view the park hours, you'll also be able to see times for any parades or fireworks shows happening each day of your visit and plan for early entry or extended theme park hours for eligible on-site hotel guests.
  • Check the height requirements for attractions: If you are traveling to Disney World with young children, you can check the height requirements for attractions on Disney World's website or in the My Disney Experience app. There are also measuring stations at all attractions that have a minimum height requirement, but it's better to know ahead of time to avoid tears if your child isn't quite tall enough.
  • Know where to find your favorite characters : Most Disney characters have designated meeting times and locations, which you can find in the My Disney Experience app. Booking a character meal can be a great way to meet multiple characters at once, but you can also meet many characters in the parks. Popular meet-and-greets also offer Genie+ Lightning Lane access, which can cut down on the time you spend waiting to meet Mickey, Moana or Cinderella.
  • Decide if you want to purchase PhotoPass photos : You can save money on Disney Memory Maker by purchasing in advance before you visit. It's the easiest way to capture your vacation memories and an add-on we highly recommend. You can view and download your photos in the My Disney Experience app.
  • Study up on Genie+: As helpful as Genie+ can be, there is a bit of a learning curve. Study up using our Genie+ guide and Disney's own overview before your visit. It's good to know which attractions participate in Genie+, how to reserve Lightning Lane access and how to make the most of the service.
  • Plan for downtime: One of the biggest mistakes people make at Disney World is overscheduling their trip and leaving no time for rest and relaxation. If you are visiting for more than a few days, try and schedule a day away from the parks where you swim, explore the other resorts or just lounge around the hotel. It'll help rejuvenate you for the rest of your trip. For shorter trips, you may want to schedule a slow morning or return to your hotel early one day instead of being at the parks from opening to closing every day of your trip.

Read all of our best Disney World tips here .

Bottom line

There you have it — the ultimate guide to visiting Walt Disney World.

In addition to the planning and preparation you've now mastered, there are two very important things you must do during your Disney World vacation — don't overplan and have fun. It's much better to have a short list of "must-do" rides, restaurants and activities than to have a minute-by-minute itinerary that most certainly will not play out exactly how you planned.

Keeping a loose itinerary leaves room for magic moments like stumbling upon a favorite character, noticing a super-short line for a ride or deciding last-minute to watch a parade you happened upon. You can't do everything in one trip anyway, so do the things you can and save the rest for next time when you are a certified Disney pro.

Last Updated on July 26, 2020

A simple guide on how to use My Disney Experience and the My Disney Experience App at Walt Disney World. #disneytravels

The key to a great Disney vacation is planning. And getting started can be overwhelming, not knowing what the first step is. It is nearly impossible to plan a Disney vacation without My Disney Experience. This tutorial will show you how to get your My Disney Experience account set up and ready to start planning your perfect Disney vacation.

Through the My Disney Experience App, guests can see wait times, check dining reservations, make fast passes and park hours, all from your phone. I like to use my desktop to set up the account, it’s much easier. There are more menu options and they are easier to navigate through the desktop.

Go to  www.mydisneyexperience.com  to create an account.

Complete Your Profile

Don’t forget, the My Disney Experience is completely free.

Once downloaded, please open the app and set yourself up. I found it easier to set myself up online on my computer  first .

  • Go to:  https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/plan/my-disney-experience/
  • Click on the big green button that says. : “Sign In or Create Account”

Create Your Family & Friends List

From here, you will be asked to add the details of any friends and family that will be joining you on this vacation.

From here, you will be asked to send an invitation to link accounts with another guest with an MDE account. Not everyone needs to have an account, by the way.

Linking your Disney Ticket to Your My Disney Experience Account

Head to the Membership and Passes section of the My Disney Experience and link your purchased tickets to your account.

Based on your address, MDE will automatically notify you of all eligible offers.

Enter your Confirmation number from your ticket purchase or hotel reservation to unlock your tickets and match each ticket to a guest.

Having spent 3 hours last night on the phone fixing an improperly created account, it is important to create your My Disney Experience accurately and in full.

It is imperative that you have the enough guests on your account to accommodate the tickets purchased or your the tickets will back as unable to link.

If you can’t link the tickets to your account via the app, try logging into your account on desktop and see where that leads you. If you are still having difficulties, call 1-800-327-2996 with your confirmation number in hand. You will be asked to provide your MDE email address, name, and date of birth of the main account holder.

Payment method

Regardless of how you paid for your Disney tickets or Disney Vacation package, it is important to add a payment method to your My Disney Experience.

Setting up a payment method is how to pay from your magic band when staying on-site, and make dining reservations that require a credit card hold/preauthorization.

There are only 3 dining experiences that require full payment in order to make a reservation; Cinderella’s Royal Table, Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue and Disney’s Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show . Everything else asks for a credit card on file in order to charge for no-show fees should the guest fail to make the timing.

Manage Your Vacation on My Plans

Now that you have to have your tickets linked, you can create FastPass reservations for your holiday. Guests can get up to 3 fast passes at a time, for one park.

Confusing for a large planning party

We are a large family of 10 with multiple households. It was unclear about linking tickets. We are managing through the bumps and bruises but it has been somewhat difficult. As the vacation planner setting everything up, I didn’t realize until it was too late that children should be set up by their parent. Once all the tickets were entered and I began sharing family & friends we realized I couldn’t share their info with their parent. We also lost a member from the list when invites were accepted from the same email, that person received 2 tickets under their name in their account. Once we got that figured out, we realized he had also been deleted from our park reservations. I could no longer add him back to correct it since the ticket was now linked to another account. It looks like she can reassign the ticket to the proper account/ticket owner. It also appears that you must share with each person individually or you don’t all see the entire party that was originally set up (a security feature?). As we sent invites between us we began to see the list of family & friends grow. All in all, it’s not as seamless and easy as it seems if you are a large group. We still have to call for help with corrections for fear of deactivating or ruining our tickets before we ever get there!

Nothing will link and app is frustrating to use

I have tried numerous times to link my resort reservation to this app so we can book reservations for dining etc. It will not let us use our reservation confirmation number. We have called support 3 times over the last week and got no resolution to the issue. Each time the cast member gave us a different answer for how to resolve it. None of it worked as we attempted to get this resolved prior to our 60 day mark. Now we are at the 60 day mark and some of the reservations we wanted are not available. :( Also, went to Shop Disney on the app to purchase a new Magic Band+. When the purchase was trying to go through the page would freeze and appear as if the transaction didn’t go through. I would try again over and over. My cart would still be full and I never got a purchase confirmation. The next day I got an alert from AMEX, my card was charged 5 times for the magic band. I called AMEX and they flagged the charges. Then I had to call Shop Disney support to verify that the purchase was for one magic band and not five. The cast member said none of the sales were completed. She completed a new one on the call but said it would take several days for the other five charges to fall off the card. Let’s just say that the app is unpredictable and doesn’t work very well. Keeping my fingers crossed that all of this can eventually be corrected and will work for Genie+ etc. once our days in the parks happen.

Developer Response ,

Hey there! This sounds like something our support team can help you with. Will you please send us a message from the app? Head to the More (☰) tab, and under the Help menu, select "Send Us Your Feedback." We'll get right on it!

Terrible & ruins vacation

Don’t count on getting in to Rise of the Resistance even if you get up at 4:30 am and arrive at the park at 6 am... even though all members of your party went through security an had admission scanned at around 6:30 am, and are standing well inside the park by Grohman’s theater....BECAUSE you MUST use that lively My Disney Experience app to join a “ boarding group”...and as people around us were getting group 35 , the Disney Exoerience did NOT work for any of our phones until my husband pulled his out and got us Boarding Group 105...Which would still be ok, if we didn’t need to leave and drive 4 hours home today. So while people around us had their groups called at 8:30-9:30 am... we are still sitting here, knowing our “group” probably won’t be called until late afternoon or early evening...too late for us. Ift wouldn’t be so bad if we just didn’t make the group but to be here and only because of Disney, not be in the group is EXTREMELY frustrating. Cast members were not helpful or sympathetic...so maybe we won’t be renewing those very expensive Premium Annual Passes after all. And this is all with having a DAS card. Getting too old for this 🤔

How To Disney

Planning The Parks Tips

The ultimate guide to my disney experience.

my disney experience family walking in magic kingdom

My Disney Experience , the official app for Walt Disney World, continues to become more critical each year. This free planning app is essential to planning a successful Walt Disney World vacation. Although we appreciate it all, it can help us throughout our vacation, navigating it can be challenging.

To help you prepare for your Walt Disney World vacation, we have the ultimate guide to My Disney Experience. This guide will help you learn the key features that will help make your Walt Disney World vacation magical.

Walt Disney World Map

Maps of the Walt Disney World Resort

The map feature is the first part of My Disney Experience that you will find helpful. It doesn’t matter where you are throughout Walt Disney World. You can find a map of the area.

Maps are found by choosing the location button on the main bar of the app. It will pull up your location in Walt Disney World or default to Magic Kingdom if you are at home checking it out.

We like seeing these from home as we figure out where everything is for our vacation, but navigating a Disney Park or a Disney Resort becomes beneficial.

The significant part about the map feature is you can choose from a variety of selections from a drop-down menu to choose what is highlighted on your map.

The default selection is wait times, but you can also choose options such as bathrooms (don’t laugh, this can be extremely helpful), entertainment, dining, and a few other options.

Take time before heading to Walt Disney World to look at some maps. Get familiar with the map layouts and your Walt Disney World Resort layout. This will help you find your way around easier when you arrive.

rise wait time (DT)

A prominent feature you will want to use throughout your tip is the wait times. Disney currently provides wait times in the app giving Guests up-to-date estimated wait times. This is extremely helpful throughout your day in the Parks.

Knowing the wait times before you move around the Park, you can make more precise decisions. Like with the maps, wait times are found by choosing the location button. It will typically default to the Park you are in, but you can navigate between Parks.

You are also able to change from the map view to a list. This option is located in the upper right corner. This is a quick way to see which rides have the lowest wait times, as Disney puts them in order.

Don’t randomly walk around the Parks without first knowing the wait times. Use the app to help you create a plan.

mobile order

Mobile Ordering

Throughout the Walt Disney World Parks and Resorts, Guests can use mobile order at quick service locations. This is a fantastic way to avoid long lines during mealtime.

Mobile ordering allows Guests to go into MDE, select a  dining location of choice , such as Woody’s Lunch Box in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, choose an available time slot and then place their food order.

Once it is their selected time, Guests can choose “Prepare My Order” in the app, and their food will be ready shortly.

Mobile Ordering is found in multiple locations, which you can see within the app. The plus sign and the three lines on the app’s right give you access to the Mobile Order option.

The great thing about Mobile Ordering is that you can practice before arriving at Walt Disney World, allowing you to get the hang of it before you have a food meltdown in the middle of Magic Kingdom.

Disney Genie, Genie+, and Individual Lightning Lanes

Disney Genie is a free planning tool in the My Disney Experience app. Guests can set up their favorite interests and priorities before their visit. Then Disney Genie provides the best suggestions for Disney day.

Disney Genie allows Guests to provide information such as whether the group prefers thrill rides if they want to see princesses, height restrictions, and any disability access information you might have.

By putting this information into the system, Disney Genie will create a personalized itinerary in the “My Day” tab.

As part of Disney Genie, Guests can add Genie+ and Individual Lightning Lanes. These are paid features that are found within My Disney Experience. Genie+ currently starts at $15 per day per person and can see peak pricing of up to $30 per person per day.

By purchasing  Genie+ , Guests can use the Lightning Lanes for our 40 attractions throughout the four Disney Parks, giving them lower wait times. Keep in mind that Genie+ is the next available booking. Although you can modify your selections now, you can’t choose your return times.

Individual Lightning Lanes work similarly to Genie+ but are for specific rides. There are four rides currently not included with Genie+. Those rides are Avatar Flight of Passage,  Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. Guests can purchase these rides al-a-carte and use the Lightning Lane for their ride experience. The big difference between these rides is that Guests can choose their return window.

You will find some main features within the My Disney Experience app . This guide will help you navigate this app more successfully during your next Walt Disney World vacation. There are a lot of features within the app that can be extremely helpful during a Disney trip. Take time to look the app over before arriving at Walt Disney World so you can successfully use My Disney Experience each day.

My Disney Experience App: A Guide

my disney experience app

A Beginner’s Guide to the My Disney Experience App

This Guide will teach you how to use the My Disney Experience App. My Disney Experience allows you to make reservations prior to your trip and then continues to be your source for information and updates throughout your Disney World vacation. Mastering this app is essential to planning the absolute best Disney World vacation possible. Let’s take a deeper look at this powerful app and examine why it will make your life much easier and your vacation more magical.

What is the My Disney Experience App?

my disney experience download

Walt Disney World’s old paper ticketing system is now a thing of the past. It’s been replaced with a new planning tool – My Disney Experience – which combines innovative, wearable technology with a powerful smartphone app. By using the service, you’ll be able to combine all of your planning and reservation information into one location. It’s now easier than ever before!

My Disney Experience allows you to make Advance Dining Reservations (ADR) and Lightning Lane/Disney Genie+ selections, check out the park hours, interactive maps, up-to-the-minute wait times for attractions, and much more.

The app is easy to use, and you can access your account via a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Once you create an account, you’ll simply log in to make your reservations and check every detail of your trip.

Want to share these details with your travel companions? No problem! Once everyone in your party has set up their own My Disney Experience account, you’ll be able to share the details of your Disney trip with your connections.

The app also allows you to customize your MagicBand, that colorful wearable device everyone has on their wrist. Once you activate your MagicBand, the device will act as your park tickets, resort hotel key, verification for Genie+ and Lightning Lane selections, and payment system. Your account will be charged automatically when you purchase items like food and merchandise from your MagicBand. No need to open up your wallet!

If you have a Disney resort reservation, then your MagicBand is automatically linked to your My Disney Experience account. If not, you can purchase a MagicBand at a participating retail location and link it to your account.

By signing up for a My Disney Experience app, you will be able to:

  • Build your Dream Disney World Vacation : Once your account has been created, you’ll be able to save items in your cart for convenience.
  • Make Reservations in Advance: With the My Disney Experience app, you can easily make your dining reservations (and other reservations) before you arrive.
  • Manage your Itinerary: Not only will you be able to create your vacation details, but you can also share your itinerary with family and friends.
  • Seamless Organization: My Disney Experience will connect your ticket for theme parks and Annual Passes to your card or MagicBand.
  • Hotel Registration Made Easy: Instead of the normal hotel lobby check-in, you’ll be able to head directly to your room (if you are staying at a Disney Resort hotel).
  • Relive the Fun: With My Disney Experience, you’ll be able to view all of your Disney PhotoPass photos.

If you need help planning and booking your next Walt Disney World vacation, then you should contact The Vacationeer travel agency. They can handle all of your reservations for you and make sure you get the most magical Disney vacation possible. Best of all, the services of The Vacationeer are totally free! Once you have set up an account, then it’s time to enter your reservation information. Each member of your party/family will be able to choose their preferred MagicBand color and personalize it with a name. Once completed, Disney will send your MagicBands to your home address, but you can begin your trip planning in the meantime.

Update: With the expectation of Annual Passholders, Disney no longer sends free MagicBands to its guests . You can still purchase them online here .

3. Make your Disney Genie+ Selections

The My Disney Experience App will come in handy for a lot of things, and it’s even more valuable with the integration of the Disney Genie app .

Disney Genie+

The Disney Genie+ reservation system allows you to bypass the regular lines at the popular attractions and then breeze right onto the rides via the Lightning Lane entrance.

Your first Disney Genie+ reservation can be made starting at 7 AM on the day of your visit, regardless of if you are staying at a Disney World resort or somewhere off Disney property.

Disney Genie+ typically costs $15-$30 (varies by date/demand/park) per ticket per day and gives you access to the Lightning Lane entrance at over 40 Disney World attractions. Selections can be made one at a time throughout the day.

Lightning Lane Passes

Individual Lightning Lane passes are available for Disney’s highest-demand attractions. Costs vary based on attraction, date, and availability.

If you make reservations to stay at a Disney-owned resort hotel, then you’ll be able to make your pay-per-ride Lightning Lane selections starting at 7 AM on the same day as your Walt Disney World visit. If you are staying elsewhere but have your theme park tickets, then you can make your selections once the park opens.

Need more information? Contact The Vacationeer today!

The chart below details which rides and attractions are included in Disney Genie+ and which are eligible for Lightning Lane Passes (pay-per-ride).

Where to Begin

  • Choose the date you wish to make your Disney Genie+ selections for
  • Select the Disney theme park you’ll be at on this day
  • Next, scroll through the options and “select an experience” for your Disney Genie+ reservation.
  • Then select a time that makes sense.

Note that some experiences may not be available. Remember to book your Disney Genie+ selections as soon as possible because the early bird catches the worm .

Once you have selected the attraction and timeframe, then you will see the “review and confirm” screen. Press “confirm” once you have made your decision.

How to Choose Your Disney Genie+ Selection

First, decide which Disney experiences are your top priorities. Next, consider which attractions will likely have the longest lines.

It probably goes without saying, but you’ll want to choose rides that are expected to have long lines so you can get the most value out of your Genie+ and Lightning Lane selections.

For some Disney Genie+ ideas, see our Best Magic Kingdom Rides , Best Epcot Rides , Best Animal Kingdom Rides and Best Hollywood Studios Rides pages before you choose. And for other strategies to avoid crowds, see our Disney Crowd Calendar , How to Avoid Lines at Disney World , Disney After Hours , Club Level at Disney World , and Disney VIP Tours articles.

Make your trip as magical as possible!

4. Making your Advanced Dining Reservations

My Disney Experience dining reservations

My Disney Experience is an easy way to make your advance dining reservations. From the start menu, you simply select the option to reserve dining, then add the size of your party and the date you wish to dine. Next, you will select the general area/location of your desired restaurant and the type of cuisine you wish to eat. Scroll through the options and pick an available restaurant and time that works best for you.

Once you arrive at Walt Disney World Resort, you’ll be able to pre-order meals using the My Disney Experience app (at participating restaurants).

5. Check Wait Times

With the My Disney Experience (and now Disney Genie) mobile app, you can check the current wait times for rides and character greetings in real time.

Once you are in the Disney parks, you’ll be able to change your Genie+ selections on the go. And after you’ve completed your first Genie+ experience, then you’ll be able to reserve more times for the Lightning Lane entrance as the day goes on.

You’ll also be able to change dining reservations and use the map view to locate restrooms and restaurants and to read more about a particular attraction. And the Disney Genie service will provide you with real-time wait times and advice!

See our Disney World Souvenirs and Best Disney Backpacks pages for ways to carry your belonging and keep your phone charged.

6. MagicBands and My Disney Experience

Disney MagicBand

Each guest will receive a MagicBand – a colorful rubber wristband that contains an embedded computer chip that holds all of your vacation information. Your MagicBand will act as the key to unlock all of your Walt Disney World magic. They are used as your hotel room key, theme park ticket, dining reservations, Genie+, Disney PhotoPass, and resort charge card during your trip.

Your My Disney Experience account (and credit card) are linked directly to your MagicBand. This makes for a seamless and effortless in-park experience.

Please check that the upcoming vacation is linked to your My Disney Experience account . If you have booked through a Disney travel planner or Disney’s website, then it should be automatically linked to your account. If you book your trip via a third party, then you’ll need to link your accounts.

Once your accounts are linked, then you can begin to personalize your MagicBand. Click on “My Disney Experience” in the upper right corner and then click “MagicBands and Cards.” Verify your mailing address and begin to customize your MagicBand.

After you’ve added your details, then click the “ship now” button to have it shipped to your home address. Allow a week or two for delivery.

Once your MagicBand has arrived, now you’ll now be ready to hit the ground running upon your arrival at Walt Disney World Resort.

7. Walt Disney World Resort Hotels and My Disney Experience App

guide to my disny experience

With the My Disney Experience app, you’ll be able to save time when you stay at one of Disney’s official hotels.

In conjunction with your MagicBand, you’ll be able to check into your hotel room using the “My Resort Dashboard” feature. It will grant you access to your Disney Resort hotel reservations, where you can see your building, floor, and room number. You’ll also be able to check in from the app! This will come in especially handy for families with young (and impatient) kids.

The “My Resort Dashboard” includes directions and transportation options to your resort, a map of the hotel with the location of your room, and a number to call your hotel’s front desk if you need some assistance.

8. Purchases Made Easy

what is the my disney experience app?

Walt Disney World Resort has dozens and dozens of gift shops and vendors throughout the park. As you make your purchases, there’ll be no need to pull out your wallet because these merchants are equipped with MagicBand readers. Simply place your MagicBand up against the reader, type in your PIN, and then your My Disney Experience account will be charged automatically. It’s that simple!

If you lose your MagicBand, don’t fret. You can deactivate your MagicBand (using the My Disney Experience app) until you replace it with a new one. And if your MagicBand is found by someone else, they won’t be able to make purchases without your PIN code or access your credit card information.

Enjoy your Walt Disney World Vacation !

We hope you find this guide to the My Disney Experience app has been helpful.

The Only Walt Disney World Guide You Need

disney travel experience

Walt Disney World can be a dream vacation destination for families, couples and friends alike—but visiting this Orlando-based theme park without knowing the lay of the land is challenging. As restaurants fill up six months in advance and rides can be booked sixty days before arrival, “just winging it” is not the move at Disney World. Thankfully, you won’t have to stick your nose in guide books for the next year to survive, as we’ve made everything as simple as possible with this definitive Disney guide.

There’s no need to spend time on message boards or frantically Google which attractions to FastPass. Consider your questions answered, your trip planned, and your Disney vacation officially set, thanks to all this free expertise:

Walt Disney World, in a Nutshell

Whatever you’re envisioning, think bigger. With four theme parks, two water parks, multiple golf courses, a sports complex as well as 25 hotels and countless restaurants, it’s less a vacation destination and more of a city sprawl with Mickey Mouse as mayor, as ends of the property span as far as a half-hour drive. Unlike Disneyland, this theme park behemoth is impossible to conquer in one day, so prepare to pace yourself.

Each of the four main parks have a distinctive theme. Magic Kingdom is the “most magical place on earth," home to the soaring castle, princess power, and all the nostalgic classics. Epcot is two parks in one, with technology and future-focused attractions as well as an around-the-world dining and drinking bonanza. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is fully movie-centric, as well as the place for all things "Star Wars," while Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a combination animal reserve, international experience, and otherworldly wonderland, thanks to the new Pandora: The World of Avatar expansion. If you don’t have tickets to the parks or water parks, explore the Pixar-themed worlds of resort hotels and well as Disney Springs, the revitalized area formerly known as Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island that has shops, entertainment and activities open to the public.

When to Visit

Busy season tends to overlap with when children are out of school, but certain weekends and holidays, like Labor Day, are reliably slower. Though the crowds tend to surge at the end of the year, the park is pure magic around Halloween as well as the holiday season (early November to early January), when no expense is spared on decor.

Booking a Walt Disney World vacation is a lot like planning a wedding: there are tons of moving parts, endless options for all kind of budgets, and you’ll want to be weary of cancelation deadlines. We rounded up plenty of advice for first-timers as well as an extra list of pointers , but whether you’re a Magic Kingdom-bound newbie or veteran, we recommend following our Disney Planning Checklist to ensure every portion of your vacation goes smoothly. Hotels and admission can be purchased separately or together, so consider taking time to explore Disney’s discount page and weigh pricing options to see which works best for you. Most importantly, sign up for My Disney Experience , the virtual planning guide that organizes your dining, hotel, and ticket hotel reservations and book FastPass+ choices in one convenient place.

Picking a property doesn’t have to be stressful. This convenient comparison of every Disney-owned resort and shortlist of the very best non-Disney hotels worth staying at will make your selection a breeze. The main difference to note is that Disney-operated hotels offer exclusive benefits like Extra Magic Hours , which grant additional time at the parks each morning or evening, as well as early FastPass+ booking, complimentary MagicBands, and Disney’s Magical Express airport bus transportation, while external properties can often be either more cost-effective—or, in the case of the impeccable Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort , much more luxurious. Many hotels are near Disney parks, but only a few are walkable: Disney’s Contemporary Resort offers a pathway to the Magic Kingdom, while Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, Yacht Club Resort, Beach Club Resort, and the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin have a pedestrian entrance at Epcot’s World Showcase.

Walt Disney World sells two formats of theme park tickets: single-day and multi-day, which lasts two to 14 days. Both can become “park hopper” tickets for a fee, allowing guests to visit multiple theme parks each day, or “park hopper plus," which offer additional admission to water parks and golf courses. (These add-ons can also be purchased separately.) Don’t forget to check for current special offers or feel the need to have a ticket on days you arrive late or depart early; there's plenty to do without paying for admission.

The Disney Difference

Prepare for smiling faces, waving hands, and a greeting of “Welcome home!”, even if you’ve never been before. The staff is extra-friendly, helpful, and willing to answer questions at any time. If problems do arise, Guest Services centers throughout the parks can fix nearly any issue. Walt Disney World is truly its own little world, complete with lots of lingo that first-timers may be overwhelmed by, so consult our Disney Glossary for translations and definitions of all Disney terminology.

From popcorn stands to AAA Five Diamond Award recipients, Walt Disney World truly offers every kind of culinary experience . All four theme parks have quick service options, table service restaurants, and character dining options where royals, movie characters, and Mickey Mouse himself roam the restaurant to greet guests individually. Disney Springs, too, has become a theme park for food with more new restaurants and food stalls than anywhere else in Orlando. Don’t miss the incredible range of dining experiences outside the parks at Disney-owned hotels just because you’re not staying there—it’s practically a must. Restaurants begin taking reservations 180 days in advance and require a credit card guarantee; no-shows and same-day cancelations will incur a $10 charge per person. If any of it seems overwhelming, Disney World vacation packages offer a Disney Dining Plan option, allowing guests to pre-pay for their meals in exchange for dining credits to use each day. Disney parks are also extremely accommodating of food restrictions and allergies, so if needed, be sure to inquire upon arrival.

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Though Walt Disney World is intrinsically tied to childhood, the options to imbibe on property are unparalleled. The resort not only prides itself on having one of the most impressive sommelier programs in the country, but creates interesting cocktails, unique beer lists, and wide-ranging wine menus for its properties. From a tiki bar to a tequila cave, there are a multitude of wonderful watering holes, and if you haven’t been in forever, Epcot’s World Showcase is essentially a worldwide bar crawl. Many Disney World drinks are cult favorites , and as of recently, alcohol is (technically) served at all four theme parks. The Magic Kingdom was famously dry, but a selection of wine, champagne, or beer is now offered to customers dining at certain table service restaurants .

Disney World offers low-key attractions for young children and the action-averse, but there is plenty for thrillseekers, too , with rides featuring massive drops, hairpin turns, serious G-forces, and even inversions. Unlike traditional amusement parks, there’s something here for everybody, and it’s easy to get the very best seats or skip the wait. Many attractions offer FastPass+—Disney’s program allowing all guests to “skip the line” on multiple rides each day. Plotting out which rides to FastPass in advance is more of an art than a science, but our definitive FastPass+ guide makes it easy.

It’s not just boat rides and roller coasters—between the stage shows, evening entertainment, and “streetsmosphere," there’s plenty to see, most without even having to wait in line.

Daily performances of Festival of the Lion King at Animal Kingdom and Mickey’s Friendship Faire at Magic Kingdom are wondrous sights, as are taking to the streets to see Star Wars’ stormtroopers at Hollywood Studio’s March of the First Order or a fire-breathing dragon crawl down Main Street, USA in Magic Kingdom’s Festival of Fantasy parade. When the sun sets, Disney World comes alive, with three nightly fireworks shows and entertainment at nearly every park. Shows like Epcot’s IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth and Fantasmic! at Disney’s Hollywood Studios are classic crowd favorites, and that same park’s bombastic Star Wars-themed fireworks display can’t be missed. By Spring 2017, Magic Kingdom will unveil a new fireworks and projection show and Animal Kingdom will host new nighttime entertainment, bringing with it extra excitement, even if you’ve been before.

If you’re flying to Florida and traveling without a rental car, be sure to bring all your necessities, as there is no drugstore or grocery market accessible by Disney transportation.

Hotel gift shops carry a limited amount of toiletries, dry goods, and medicine, but Disney experts often ship necessities like water bottles and diapers directly to their Disney resort in advance of their arrival. (Expect a $5 handling charge per package.) Comfortable shoes are a must—you’ll walk more than you ever have in your life—and the weather shifts often, so toss in extra layers for nighttime and ponchos in case of rain. No spare room in your luggage for souvenirs? Disney gift shops can ship your purchases home, no problem.

Getting There

Orlando International Airport is the main airport servicing Walt Disney World and its surrounding areas. Guests at Disney-operated hotels are given free round-trip coach bus transportation to and from the airport, also known as MCO, on Disney’s Magical Express ; the approximately 40-minute drive can be up to $75 via taxi or $65 in an Uber. UberX pick-ups at the Orlando airport are not currently available, but drop-offs for departing flights are.

How to Get Around

Walt Disney World Transportation shuttles guests between Disney hotels and theme parks every 20 or so minutes, with drop-offs just a short distance from the front gate of each park. Because of this, Disney World is entirely doable without a car, yet some families prefer one for convenience. Standard parking costs $20 each day at theme parks, which can be used at all interchangeably. (Note that Magic Kingdom’s parking lot is at the nearby Ticket & Transportation Center, which requires an additional ferry ride to reach the park; taxis and Ubers conduct Magic Kingdom pick-ups and drop-offs from here as well.) There are options more scenic than cars, like the Disney Monorail which shuttles guests between the Magic Kingdom and Epcot or boats which operate between Epcot and Hollywood Studios. (Transportation to the parks via both methods is also available from select hotels.) As for Uber, Disney parks have become lenient to the ride-share service, but integration across the property is not yet seamless. If you’re trying to find your way through the parks themselves, the My Disney Experience app offers reliable walking directions and arrival times.

Make Your Trip Your Own

We’ve created travel guides to help everyone from skeptical parents and VIPs with money to burn to budget-conscious visitors and those who haven’t been to Disney World in decades . Whether you’re hoping to plan your dream Disney wedding , take a perfect honeymoon or simply go on aromantic couple’s trip, there are plenty of ways to tone down the family aspects and make Disney nothing short of sentimental. And, no matter if you visited last year or last century, you can make your Disney trip a little more special with our expert’s advice and in-the-know tips that will make any trip extraordinary.

What's Coming in the Future

There is plenty heading to Walt Disney World in 2017, but once Pandora — The World of Avataropens at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in May, the next major Walt Disney World expansion will be Toy Story Land , a movie-themed area with rides and larger-than-life props slated to open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios sometime in 2018. There are plenty more hotel expansions, dining locations and nightlife debuts to come, but the most noteworthy opening will be Star Wars Land, which will open in 2019.

Do you know what the fastest rides at Disney World are?

This guide is not for the faint of heart, but if you’re in great health and seek thrills, you’ve come to the right place!

The best part of being a solo traveler i s not having to wait in long lines all the time.

Skipping through the Single Rider Line is one of the best parts of your visits.

Especially when anticipating riding the fastest and thrilling attractions that Walt Disney World has to offer.

Today, I will be sharing the 10 fastest attractions at the Disney resort. I will also be sharing some of my solo traveler tips along the way!

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY  DISCLOSURE  FOR MORE INFO.  Which means if you click on certain links, I may receive a small commission at no additional charge to you.

10. Space Mountain ( 28 MPH)

This Magic Kingdom classic which debuted in 1975, is popular for feeling like it goes as fast as Test Track but being one of the slower thrill rides in all of Disney World.

How tall is Space Mountain?

The indoor, dark space themed coaster is dual tracked. Both tracks are equal in height at 65 feet (ft), with its highest drop being 26 ft.

How long is Space Mountain?

The only difference being its length with track Alpha being longer at 3,196 ft compared to Omega’s 3,186 ft .

Space Mountain serves as Tomorrowland’s main spaceport where travelers come and go throughout the galaxy.

Pay attention to the queue to get clues and hints about destinations available from this attraction, especially as you exit!

Why is Space Mountain One of the Fastest Rides at Disney World?

As thrilling as this must do attraction is as you are dropping unexpectedly, diving and zooming through darkness, you’re only going 28 miles per hour (MPH) on each track.

With this ride being part of the “Disney Mountain” challenge, it is coined as a Beginners’ 1 st  big Roller Coaster . Waits can be over 200 minutes depending on when you’re visiting.

This ride doesn’t have a Single Rider Line . However, due to the car’s capacity, Cast Members often call for single riders once you get closer towards the front.

9. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (34 MPH)

This roller coaster was introduced to Disney guests in 2014 as part of the New Fantasyland expansion. I was actually part of the first group of guests to ride it during its debut day!

It is known for laying its foundation on the grave site of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.

This attraction is constantly at a wait between 150-180 minutes as its one of the few attractions that is slightly thrilling and that families can all ride together.

This attraction is based on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs . The animatronics at the end of the ride are from the now gone Snow White’s Scary Adventures ride.

Why is Seven Dwarfs Mine Train One of the Fastest Rides at Disney World?

You will ride through the mines, into the wooded forest and back to the Dwarfs cottage at an exhilarating but safe 34 MPH .

Then you will have just enough time to plan your ride photo at the top of the big drop.

Unfortunately, this ride DOES NOT have a Single Rider Line. I would personally rope drop this one before Space Mountain as the wait won’t waver much throughout the day.

8. BIG Thunder Mountain Railroad (35 MPH)

Are you ready to take on the wildest roller coaster in all the land at Walt Disney World! This Disney roller coaster can be found in Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland.

We all know that this is a classic Disney attraction; however, don’t let the age fool you. There’s always a wait for BIG Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Why is BIG Thunder Mountain Railroad One of the Fastest Rides at Disney World?

This Magic Kingdom Roller Coaster will keep you captivated from start to finish will high-speed thrills that will have you in pure bliss with speeds reaching up to 35 MPH!

ORDER NOW to secure your Walt Disney World theme park ticket! GET MY TICKETS.

7. The Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror (39 MPH)

In true Hollywood Studios fashion , this attraction makes you the star! This attraction is not for those with a fear of heights.

I won’t get into the story as it will ruin the experience for you in my opinion. This is a drop tower dark ride that spares no expense on its spectacular theming.

Many of the items you see are actual priceless antiques or nods to the show itself!

It will have you craning your neck from the ground as it stands at 199 ft. Anything 200 and above has to have a red beacon for planes and that would ruin the Disney magic!

Why is Tower of Terror One of the Fastest Rides at Disney World?

The drops are also generated by a computer, so you will never have the same drop sequence twice. You’re experiencing the many drops while you’re reaching speeds of up to 39 MPH.

With the opening of Galaxy’s Edge, I had no issues walking right onto the attraction during a busy holiday season as park open.

This one doesn’t have Single Rider Line, so my suggestion is to make a beeline towards sunset in the crossroads between Tower of Terror and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster when you book your Lightning Lane Pass for Rise of the Resistance.

Once you get it, you can simply walk in either direction to the most thrilling attractions at the park with little wait.

I got both done in 30-minutes that day after Christmas with this method. If any issues happen with your boarding pass, there is a Guest Experiences cart right there.

6. Slinky Dog Dash (40 MPH)

This is the E-ticket attraction of its perspective land, Toy Story Land, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

You’ll love this launch coaster with its story around this actually being built in Andy’s backyard with his “Dash and Dodge Mega Coaster Kit.”

Just in case you didn’t know, Slinky is used as the coaster and all of us “toys” get to go for a cool ride!

This is another popular one as its one of the few thrill coasters at its park that families can ride together.

Its theme is charming and its drops and theme really add to the experience that you are one of Andy’s toys in his backyard having a fun day while he’s away.

Why is Slinky Dog Dash One of the Fastest Rides at Disney World?

Opening in 2018, it’s been a hit ever since with its max speed of 40 MPH. Many guests bypass the popular Toy Story Midway Mania nowadays for this attraction.

If this is truly a must do for you, you may want to make a beeline for it and make your Rise of the Resistance Lightning Lane Pass while you wait in line.

The wait for this ride almost never goes down, but solo travelers tend to get choice seats if you ask nicely!

5. Expedition Everest (50 MPH)

Expedition Everest tends to be on every guests must do list!

Located in the Asia section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, guests board a train which is supposed to take you through the Himalayas to the base of the mountain.

After a technical issue with the tracks, you are sent backyards into the bowls of the mountain while being chased by the infamous Yeti.

Something interesting to know is that this Disney attraction set records such as being the 2011 Guinness World Records’ most expensive roller coaster at a price tag of $100 million.

It held this title up until Universal Orlando Resort debuted Hagrid’s, which totaled $300 million.

Expedition Everest has been praised for its storytelling and its thrill!

Plus, the attraction features over 8,000 artifacts brought over by Joe Rohde’s team during a research trip.

Why is Expedition Everest One of the Fastest Rides at Disney World?

At 199.5 ft and a drop of 80 ft, this yeti will deliver what you come for! Guests reach speeds of 50 MPH and can hit 3 Gs.

Normally, I would say do the Single Rider Line for this even if Lightning Lane is available. If you are a first-timer, I would say if the wait in standby is doable, go for it!

The immense detail that Rohde and his team put into the authenticity of the culture it showcases is to be appreciated.

Hipster Power Tip: Try this attraction close to park close! It’s even more thrilling at night!

4. Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster (57 MPH)

At the end of Sunset Blvd at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, there lies a crossroads that will take you towards two different thrill-seeking experiences.

One is The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and the other is Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster featuring Aerosmith.

You may not know this but Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster originally wasn’t made with Aerosmith in mind.

According to Disney lore, Aerosmith was chosen after other bands such as KISS wanted a bit more than what Disney wanted to pay.

The enclosed launch coaster debuted in the Summer of 1999. You are then invited to take of tour of G Force Records , where you get an exclusive look at Aerosmith laying down a song.

The group is then rushed by their manager to get to their show way across town and they insist she gives everyone backstage passes!

She orders a super stretch limo (your ride vehicles) and you are ushered to the alley to rush to the show!

Why is Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster One of the Fastest Rides at Disney World?

Each experience is different as you have the chance to get 2 different songs from the band to listen to as you go.

The ride is infamous for its launch which goes 0-57 MPH in under 3 seconds while taking your ride photo!

The coaster features 3 inversions and has 5 Gs on its belt and is a total length of 3,268 ft, including the corkscrew and sea serpent roll with a height of 80 ft.

Single Rider Line is available for this ride so my tip would be to use the same one as for Tower of Terror. You will get both done in 30-45 minutes. If you want to shoot for later, try it towards park closing.

3. Tron Lightcycle/Run (59.3 MPH)

This Magic Kingdom attraction is a twin of the Tron Lightcycle coaster that’s  currently open at Shanghai Disneyland.

Tron Lightcycle/Run  is right next to Space Mountain in   Tomorrowland . You can also see it from the Peoplemover   and the Tomorrowland Speedway.

This Disney coaster is designed as a motorbike styled vehicle to help bring a realistic ride experience to you.

To  match the TRON theme,  the motorbikes are designed to look similar to the vehicles from the film. H owever, the ride doesn’t really have a storyline.

Ride Stats for TRON Lightcycle/Run at the Magic Kingdom

  • Lift/Launch System:  LIM Launch
  • TRON Ride Height:  78 ft
  • Speed of TRON Ride:  59.3 MPH
  • TRON Length:  3,169 FT
  • Time:  2 Minutes

2. Guardians of the Galaxy (50 MPH to 60 MPH)

This galactic roller coaster is one of the newest addition to Walt Disney World and the official speed has not been released by Disney so I put a range based on the results from roller coaster experts.

Anyhoo, Guardians of the Galaxy is located inside of Epcot and it’s where you’ll join Rocket, Groot, Drax, Gamora and Star-Lord (a.k.a. Peter Quill) to save humanity!

Why is Guardians of the Galaxy One of the Fastest Rides at Disney World?

While Disney hasn’t officially announced a speed for Guardians of the Galaxy, you’ll enjoy this family-friendly roller coaster that hits a lot of firsts for Walt Disney World such as:

  • The first coaster attraction at EPCOT.
  • First reverse launch for a Disney coaster.
  • The first Disney Omnicoaster, where vehicles make controlled rotations to always keep guests focused on the action.
  • First Walt Disney World attraction to feature the Guardians of the Galaxy.

1. Test Track (65 MPH)

This attraction is a fitting replacement for World of Motion , its predecessor.

When it originally opened to guests in 1999 in EPCOT’s Future World, it awed them as they were taken through a General Motors facility and experienced what the tests cars went through.

It was revamped completely in 2012 once Chevrolet became the sponsor. Test Track was given a more futuristic look and gave guests a more hands on experience.

The newly remodeled attraction gave guests the ability to design their own cars to test on the SIM track.

As you pass through each test, you will be shown how your car ranked.

Why is Test Track One of the Fastest Rides at Disney World?

Both versions still peak with the speed test, which Imagineers originally wanted it to be 95 MPH.

Due to the steep embankments, Florida laws and safety reasons, it was brought down to 65 MPH.

This is currently the fastest attraction Disney has built to date. Even when Tron Lightcycle Power Run debuts at Magic Kingdom, Test Track will still hold its title.

Exiting the ride will take you to the Chevrolet Showroom, where you can have more fun with your designs, see the latest vehicles, take photos and shop.

If you aren’t a GM member, your best bet here is Single Rider Line or making a straight path towards it during park open or towards closing.

This ride tends to have the highest wait times besides Frozen Ever After.

The good news is its easier if you’re a solo traveler as far as chances in Single Rider. Unless you’re a car aficionado, you aren’t missing much in the queue.

FUN FACT: There is a lounge at the very top of Test Track for GM Members to enjoy . I have had the pleasure of visiting! You can enjoy complimentary drinks, amazing views of Epcot . You can also design your car there and walk right downstairs to pretty much the front of the line.

My Final Thoughts on Riding the Fastest Rides at Disney World

As you can see, thrills at Walt Disney World come in a wide variety. They can be family rides, Drop towers and launch coasters!

That’s what makes attractions at Disney so great, there really is something for everyone to enjoy.

National Advisory: All Disney World Visitors Officially Required to Cancel Trips Due to Invading Safety Threat

in Disney Parks

A large crowd of people gathered at an outdoor event, many sitting around a central statue. The background features various buildings and decorations, including banners and balloons. The scene is vibrant and filled with people of all ages enjoying the event.

Things are getting spicy in Orlando, and if you are planning on visiting Walt Disney World, you may want to re-think that trip after the latest government update.

A person dressed in a yellow shirt is drinking water from a glass under a bright, sunny sky with the sun directly overhead. Battling the scorching heat wave, a Mickey Mouse mascot in a white suit and black bow tie stands to the left, smiling at Disney guests while they try to stay cool.

Disney World’s Heat Problem

Traveling to Walt Disney World Resort is always an exciting and magical experience. The thrill starts when you drive under the Disney World entrance, instantly feeling the magic. Passing by different theme parks and seeing all the Disney Resorts as you make your way to yours offers a small tease of the adventures that await you.

However, one major challenge is the heat. Walt Disney chose Orlando for its affordable land and lack of snow, ensuring the parks could operate year-round. However, Orlando’s frequent summer rain and intense heat are significant drawbacks. During the summer months, rain is almost a daily occurrence.

To combat this, many attractions at Walt Disney World have indoor or covered queues. Examples include Pirates of the Caribbean , Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, “it’s a small world,” and Peter Pan’s Flight.

The other issue is the extreme summer heat. Unfortunately, Inside the Magic reported multiple cases of guests suffering from heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses last summer at Walt Disney World. Some guests have resorted to extreme measures to cool down, breaking park rules in the process. This prompted the parks to introduce more ways to help guests stay cool during the hottest months.

National Advisory Strikes Disney

Currently, Orlando is under a persistent heat warning, adding to the challenges guests face. While the heat can be intense, the magic of Walt Disney World continues to draw visitors, ensuring memorable experiences despite the weather.

Disney monorail at EPCOT

Today, Orlando is back under another heat advisory.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for all of Central Florida from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, with expected peak heat index values ranging from 106 to 112 degrees.

Per the Orlando Sentinel , “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the advisory warns. “Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”

Central Florida residents can expect a scorching start to the week, with temperatures climbing into the mid-to-upper 90s Fahrenheit (°F) across inland areas. Coastal regions will experience slightly milder temperatures in the low 90s (°F). However, the primary concern for both locations is the potential for scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms developing later in the day.

The high humidity levels will exacerbate the already sweltering conditions, pushing the “feels-like” temperatures to dangerous levels. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast warns of a “marginal risk for excessive rainfall” across portions of Lake, Volusia, Orange, Seminole, and northern Brevard counties.

These areas could see localized heavy rainfall with accumulations ranging from 1 to 3 inches, with some isolated areas potentially exceeding 4 inches.

Sizzling Secrets Revealed: Your Ultimate Guide to Beat the Heat and Stay Cool at Theme Parks This Summer

The slow-moving nature of these storms raises the threat of flash flooding in low-lying areas and poor visibility on roadways. Additionally, the storms may produce wind gusts of 40-50 mph and frequent lightning strikes. Fortunately, rain chances are expected to diminish after sunset and conclude by midnight.

While Tuesday’s forecast predicts similar heat patterns, with inland temperatures remaining in the mid-to-upper 90s (°F), a slight decrease in the heat index is anticipated. Coastal areas can expect slightly lower temperatures in the low 90s (°F).

However, humidity will remain a factor, causing “feels-like” temperatures to range from 100 to 107 degrees (°F). The chance of rain showers and thunderstorms persists on Tuesday, but the overall coverage is expected to be less extensive compared to Monday.

Residents are advised to take precautions against the heat by staying hydrated, seeking air conditioning during peak heat hours, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activity. Motorists should be aware of the potential for sudden downpours and reduced visibility while driving. It is always prudent to monitor weather updates and heed advisories issued by local authorities.

A view of Cinderella Castle at dusk in Walt Disney World Free. The castle is illuminated with blue and gold lights, surrounded by people. Trees and lampposts are visible, with the sky gradually transitioning to night. The scene captures a moment of magic and wonder.

Interestingly enough, Disneyland was also just under a heat advisory, with guests warned to stay home.

Tokyo Disney Resort is also suffering from the heat , so much so that they have found ways to add more water spraying stations that can cool guests down, like the water spurting from the Baymax float in their parade.

Not only has Disney World warned its guests about the heat wave, but the U.S. government has also shared that COVID-19 is back with a vengeance, urging travelers to be careful if they choose to visit highly populated areas that tend to be breeding grounds for the sickness, like any of the Disney World theme parks.

While guests can choose to go against the advisory being sent out, it seems that the U.S. government has made it clear that guaranteed safety would require a trip cancelation.

How to Survive Disney Through the National Advisory Safety Alert

Florida’s summer months offer sunshine and warmth, but for theme park enthusiasts visiting Walt Disney World Resort, the scorching temperatures and high humidity can quickly turn magical memories into a sweaty struggle. However, fear not, fellow Disney adventurers! By incorporating these essential strategies into your vacation plan, you can conquer the heat and have a fantastic time exploring the wonders of Disney World.

Central Florida’s heat demands constant hydration. Pack a reusable water bottle and refill it frequently at the numerous water fountains and hydration stations strategically located throughout the parks. Avoid sugary drinks that dehydrate you faster, opting instead for water or low-sugar electrolyte beverages.

A colorful entrance sign to Adventureland featuring decorative masks and bamboo accents against a backdrop of lush tropical greenery and blue skies.

Ditch the dark colors and heavy fabrics. Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing made from moisture-wicking materials like cotton or quick-dry synthetics. Loose-fitting clothing allows for better air circulation and keeps you cooler. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses protect your head and eyes from the sun’s harsh rays. Applying sunscreen liberally and reapplying every two hours, or more frequently after swimming, is crucial to prevent sunburn.

Plan your day strategically, prioritizing rides and attractions in air-conditioned buildings during the hottest part of the day, typically between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. Seek refuge in shaded areas whenever possible, taking advantage of covered walkways, queues, and restaurants with outdoor seating shaded by trees or umbrellas.

Disney World offers a plethora of water-based attractions that provide a refreshing escape from the heat. Consider exploring splash pads like Casey Jr. Splash ‘N’ Soak Station or cooling off on a relaxing boat ride like the Pirates of the Caribbean or Jungle Cruise . Water parks, such as Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach , offer a full day of aquatic fun, with thrilling slides, lazy rivers, and wave pools.

Don’t try to cram everything into one day. Plan breaks throughout your visit to rest in air-conditioned areas or head back to your hotel for a refreshing dip in the pool. Prioritize the experiences that matter most to you and adjust your itinerary as needed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable vacation.

Pluto, Goofy, Minnie, and Mickey by the water at Blizzard Beach

Disney Genie+ (soon to be the Lightning Lane Multi Pass) allows you to skip the line for select attractions, saving valuable time standing in the hot sun. Mobile ordering lets you order food and drinks from your phone, minimizing your wait time in lines at crowded restaurants. Both services can help maintain your energy levels and keep you cool throughout the day.

Be mindful of your physical limitations. If you begin to feel overheated, dizzy, or nauseous, seek air conditioning immediately. Take breaks in the shade, sip on water, and cool down with a wet towel or fan. Don’t hesitate to ask a park employee for help if needed.

By following these simple tips, you can conquer the summer heat and have a magical and memorable Disney World vacation. Remember, prioritize your health and well-being to ensure that your Disney adventure is filled with laughter, excitement, and cool summer memories and not the first-aid center ceiling.

July 15, 2024

Want to see a whole new side of Walt Disney World ® Resort? Taking a guided tour, part of the Enchanting Extras Collection , allows you and your family to experience more magic than you ever imagined!

But with a myriad of tours to choose from, we’ve done a bit of digging to help you pick the one that’s the best fit for your family. From hidden park secrets to a behind-the-scenes look at Walt Disney World ® Resort’s plant and animal life, here’s what you need to know about your tour options. And Cardmembers, remember that you save 15% on the non-discounted price of most tours (which we’ve marked below with an asterisk!). 1 2

Magic Kingdom ® Park Tours

Disney’s keys to the kingdom tour*:.

If you’ve ever wanted a fresh perspective on Magic Kingdom ® Park, then Disney’s Keys to the Kingdom Tour will deliver all that and more. A five-hour, outdoor walking tour that includes a scrumptious lunch, this is a great way to uncover hidden secrets within Magic Kingdom ® Park, including the mystery of secret tunnels, insight into Walt Disney’s vision, and the inside scoop on some of your favorite attractions. One of the best parts: You’ll get to take home an exclusive keepsake to remember your amazing, behind-the-scenes peek into how the magic is made!

EPCOT® Tours

Epcot® seas adventures – dolphins in depth*:.

Limited to no more than eight Guests per day, this fascinating, intimate dolphin encounter is exclusive and well worth reserving in advance. At The Seas with Nemo & Friends at EPCOT you’ll get to meet bottlenose dolphins and the experts who care for these fascinating creatures. You will get wet — bring a bathing suit if you’d like to get in the water!

EPCOT® Seas Adventures – DiveQuest*:

SCUBA-certified guests, this is your chance to dive deep into aquatic life at Walt Disney World ® Resort. The best parts? Incredible marine life, guaranteed calm waters, unlimited visibility, no current — and your family and friends can watch your dive through giant windows!

Behind the Seeds*:

Got a green thumb? Anyone who loves gardening or the natural sciences will love this hourlong, up-close and personal backstage tour of the fish farm and four greenhouses that make up The Land Pavilion at EPCOT®. It’s an eye-opening peek into the future of agriculture.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom ® Theme Park Tours

Caring for giants*:.

The wild awaits at Walt Disney World ® Resort! This hourlong experience allows you to delve into the wondrous world of the largest residents at Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park. You’ll get to observe the elephants from approximately 100 feet away and meet with an expert Guide who knows all about the inner workings of the park’s African elephant herd.

Up Close with Rhinos*:

As this tour’s name suggests, it’s an unforgettable experience that allows you to meet the mighty, but gentle, white rhinoceros in a special viewing area. Lasting one hour and held outdoors, it’s a guided, backstage adventure that offers fascinating insight into the care that Earth’s second-largest land animals receive at Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park.

Wild Africa Trek* :

Get ready for a walk on the wild side with true VIP treatment! This three-hour trek offers complimentary photo services as you view African wildlife like giraffes, rhinos, hippos and crocodiles, cross a rope bridge and grassland path and even offers gourmet snacks. Note that Cardmember savings apply to mid-day tours only, and block out dates apply.

Savor the Savanna*:

A premium tour, this journey is packed with the sights, sounds and tastes of Africa! Deep in the Harambe Wildlife Reserve, you’ll get to access one of the most secluded, stunning viewing areas and learn about the park’s wildlife and the special care they receive. You’ll also dine on sumptuous African-inspired tapas, paired with regional beer and wine.

Multiple Theme Parks, Backstage Areas and Resort Hotel Tours

Starlight safari at disney’s animal kingdom lodge*:.

Everything looks different at night, and that includes Disney’s African savannas and wildlife! Open to all guests at Walt Disney World ® Resort, you’ll get to use a night vision device to spot over 30 African species, including zebras, wildebeest and ostriches, as darkness falls.

Wilderness Back Trail Adventure*:

There’s nothing like zipping along the gorgeous countryside on a Segway — and don’t fret if you’ve never ridden one! This guided ride through Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort includes Segway instruction and practice time, and you’ll be equipped with a safety helmet and electronic earpiece. Note that guests for this two-hour tour through natural beauty must be 16 or older.

Disney Private VIP Tours:

Fully customizable, this elite experience includes door-to-door service tailored to your heart’s desires! Your party can be as large as 10, and you’ll be our guest with unparalleled hospitality. You can choose whether you want to be whisked off to an attraction, experience or even learn a little bit more about the history of Walt Disney World ® Resort via our knowledgeable Tour Guides. Just note that this is not a backstage tour.

Whether you’re dreaming of an animal adventure or tranquil private dining, there’s a tour at Walt Disney World® Resort that’s perfect for you and your loved ones. It’s just a matter of choosing! Please note that Cardmember savings are not available on the following tours: Disney Private VIP Tours , programs exclusive to groups and group team-building programs.
