Sri Lanka develops marketing strategy for tourism growth

Wednesday January 22, 2020 5:35 pm

ECONOMYNEXT – The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau (SLTPB) has developed a long-term promotions plan focusing on major markets, which has been forwarded to the director board for approval, officials said.

The DailyFT English newspaper quoted the Chairperson of Tourism board Kimarli Fernando saying , “Over the years, we haven’t had a structured and organised long-term global marketing strategy that is long-term.”

“This time around, we will endeavour for such a course, and we are confident of realising this goal, despite challenges revolving around government procurement procedure and differences of opinion among stakeholders.”

She was quoted saying the plan will focus on eight ‘Tier 1’ destinations, which includes UK, Germany, France, China, India, and the United Arab Emirates and ‘Tier 2’ destinations focusing on other markets.

The appointment of a local PR agency is one of the initial steps, followed by calling for expression of interests to carry out destination marketing globally.

The strategy is to be presented at the meeting of the new SLTPB board of directors meeting on Wednesday.

“Tourism is gearing for exciting times. I know there is a lot to do but we are looking forward to realise our goals together as an industry despite challenges,” Fernando was quoted saying.

Sri Lanka has decided to follow a target-based plan to drive tourism revenue to 10 billion US dollars in 2025 from 4.4 billion rupees in 2018 by cutting out unnecessary regulatory barriers that hinder the expansion of the sector.

The objective is to work closely with the private sector as well as different Ministries and Government agencies to achieve the common goal of boosting earnings from tourism to $ 10 billion by 2025, Fernando said. (Colombo/Jan22/2020)

When state enterprises ran losses they were covered by loans taken from domestic banks as well as from capital markets.

Though entities like the CEB have taken loans for infrastructure, CPC and SriLankan Airlines have taken loans simply to cover losses.

Sri Lanka is planning to pass a Public Commercial Business (PCB) Act improve governance of state-owned enterprise by May 2024 as part of an anti-corruption efforts following an International Monetary Fund assessment.

Sri Lanka’s state enterprises have been used by politicians to give ‘jobs of the boys’, appropriate vehicles for personal use, fill board of directors and key positions with henchmen and relatives, according to critics.

Meanwhile macro-economists working for the state also used them to give off-budget subsides or made energy utilities in particular borrow through supplier’s credits and state banks after forex shortages are triggered through inflationary rate cuts.

The government has taken billons of dollars of loans given to Ceylon Petroleum Corporation from state banks.

There have also been high profile procurement scandals connected to SOEs. (Colombo/Apr15/2024)

360° technology for images or videos allows the covering of a 360° vision angle in two axles (X and Y), and it can be seen on a screen in an interactive way. This means that we can see everything that is around the point where the picture or video was taken, up, down, in front, behind and the sides, which allows us to reproduce the stereoscopic human vision. In this article, the usage of this technology is proposed as a tool to enhance the touristic marketing area, giving the users an innovative expérience.

Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau holds Roadshow in Moscow

On March 15, 2019 His Excellency Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation, joined by Madame Sanja Jayatilleka, attended the roadshow in Moscow, organized by the Sri Lankan Tourism Promotion Bureau with the assistance of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Russia, to promote Sri Lanka as a top tourist destination in the Russian market. A similar event will be held in St. Petersburg, the cultural capital of the Russian Federation.

The roadshow is a very useful platform for representatives of tourism sectors of both countries – Sri Lanka and Russia – to establish direct cooperation with each other, learn more about the respective markets and explore opportunities for mutual contribution towards further growth of the number of Russian tourists, visiting Sri Lanka.

The event began with the lighting of a traditional oil lamp by H. E. Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka, Madame Sanja Jayatilleka, Mrs. Madubhani Perera, Marketing Director of the SLTPB, Mr. Mahen Kariyawasam, Former President of the Sri Lanka Inbound Tour Operators Association, and Mr. Alexander Delezha, Deputy Head of the External Affairs Department at the Rossiya Airlines.

While welcoming more than 40 representatives of Russian travel agencies as well as 13 delegates of Sri Lankan destination management companies (DMC) and hotels that gathered at the seminar, Ambassador Jayatilleka drew particular attention to a huge potential of the Russian market as a destination, in which the SLTPB should carry out promotional activities. Ambassador Jayatilleka also encouraged the Russian tour operators and Sri Lankan travel agents to work closely together, as they represent one of the major ties between the two countries.

Further, Mrs. Madubhani Perera, SLTPB Marketing Director, delivered a presentation on the appeal of Sri Lanka as a tourist destination due to its cultural and historic heritages and various types of leisure, offered to visitors of the island. The official part concluded with Mr. Alexander Delezha addressing the gathering with a presentation.

The second part of the occasion was dedicated to B2B meetings between Sri Lankan and Russian travel agents and DMCs.
