YAMATO, The Drummers Of Japan, Bring TENMEI To North America In 2022

YAMATO travels all over the word with Japan's traditional Taiko drums, putting its very souls into the unusual instruments.

From January 19 - March 15, 2022, YAMATO: The Drummers of Japan tour North America with their new show, Tenmei | Destiny . Now in their 27th season, the Taiko troupe has reached nearly 8 million people globally in over 4,000 performances, making them the group with the most international performances to date among all Japanese performing arts ensembles.

The troupe is ecstatic to be back on the road after their 40-city tour of JHONETSU - PASSION! in 2020 was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After a year filled with online performances , the Tenmei | Destiny tour will take YAMATO to venues in Idaho, California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Arkansas, Alabama, Wisconsin, Ohio, Massachusetts, Seattle, Calgary and Toronto.

The physically powerful troupe of musician-athletes work and live together as a community in the Asuka Village, said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture. There they create their own musical compositions, theater productions, sets, lighting design, choreography, performance techniques, costumes, makeup, stage settings and props. They even make their own bachi sticks used to play the traditional Japanese instruments, beginning each show by hitting a Wadaiko drum weighing half a ton, made from a single piece of wood from a 400-year-old tree. "YAMATO believes that the drumbeat, like the heartbeat, is the very pulse of life and the epitome of the Japanese spirit," says Founder and Artistic Director Masa Ogawa. "YAMATO uses creativity to convert Wadaiko into a performing art that can reverberate in Japan, Asia, and the rest of the world."

Founded in 1993 in Japan's Nara Prefecture and presently based in Asuka Village, said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture, YAMATO travels all over the word with Japan's traditional Taiko drums, putting its very souls into the unusual instruments. Over the past 27 years, the troupe has performed in 54 countries and regions, giving 4,000 performances for nearly eight million people.

Yamato Drummers of Japan – traditional music with style and agility

Yamato Drummers, Japan, York Grand, Theatre, TotalNtertainment

Yamato: the Drummers of Japan will return to the UK following their hugely successful 2017 tour. From February 2019 audiences across the country can experience Yamato’s innovative style; combining traditional Taiko drumming with spectacle and athleticism.

Next spring Yamato will bring their unique style of performance back to Britain for a 18 venue tour – from 15th February to 31st March – presenting a production never before seen in the UK. The 12-strong Taiko troupe will make a return visit to some venues as well as stopping off in new cities spanning the country. Press night will be held at the Brighton Dome on 15th February.

Yamato formed in 1993 with the aim of preserving the tradition of Taiko drumming whilst exploring new possibilities for the majestic instrument, the wadiako, and to create endless opportunities for the rich reverberations to be heard worldwide. Recognised as trailblazers in the Taiko world, Yamato has broken from the patriarchal confines of the style by including female drummers in the troupe from inception. Since then, the troupe has performed in front of 7 million people in more than 54 countries across the globe.

Perhaps more physically demanding that any other drumming style, performers must not only learn the traditional technique but also engage in an intensive endurance training programme. Taiko drums can weigh up to half a ton and to strike them effectively requires the full strength of a well-trained body. Yamato’s troupe starts each day with a 10km run and vigorous weight training to keep themselves in peak physical condition and maintain the fitness needed for their nightly 2 hour performances.

In this brand new show “ Passion ” or “ Jhonetsu ”, the drummers will challenge themselves to their absolute limits both musically and physically. With a show designed to instil audiences with the exhilarating and explosive energy of Taiko, this promises to be their most ambitious and spectacular show to date.

YAMATO: Drummers of Japan brings passion to the stage with North American tour

Japanese taiko troupe, YAMATO: Drummers of Japan come to Toronto for one night only, at Roy Thomson Hall on Friday, Jan. 24. Photo credit: Hiroshi Seo.

“The most important element of taiko drumming is the energy. We are thinking about how to express the energy of our humanity. It’s in our body and soul, coming from our heartbeat,” Ogawa tells Nikkei Voice in an interview.

YAMATO is celebrating its 26th season with a 40-city tour of North America, with their newest show, Jhonetsu – Passion! from Jan. 17 to Apr. 15. YAMATO will be in Toronto for their only Canadian stop at Roy Thomson Hall on Friday, Jan. 24 .

Performers build and communicate a story to tell audiences, not only through the music they create, but their body movements and choreography, lighting and stage design, creating a dynamic performance. Each performance is a unique encounter and creates a one time conversation between the performers and the audience.

The troupe is made up of 16 musician, whose physicality in their performances make them athletes as well. When the troupe is not touring, YAMATO performers live in Asuka Village of Nara Prefecture. Members wake up early and run the mountains and rice fields around the quiet village. They spend their days training at “ Kongendo ,” which is YAMATO’s studio and sometimes fishing in the village.

YAMATO’s musicians are involved in every level of their performances. From composing the music, to creating the choreography, theatre productions and lighting design. They even create their own costumes, props and bachi, or drumsticks, for each performance.

“We recognize our stage is the art created by us all and we are drawing our art in the frame. This way, we personally relate to every detail of our creation,” says Ogawa.

Over 26 years, YAMATO has performed in 4,000 shows in 54 different countries, reaching nearly eight million people. The group travels with about 40 drums, ranging in size from 10 kg to 500 kg. As artistic director, Ogawa aims to evolve the potential of taiko, being experimental and original to keep audiences interested and coming back, while still trying to respect the history and tradition of the instrument.

“I try to trust my instincts and knowledge of the art form when I start to create YAMATO’s new productions. Also I am thinking that I should trust the place we were born and live. The land gives us an energy,” says Ogawa. “However, even after it is complete, I am always nervous for my creation because I do not want to destroy Japan’s tradition. Keeping a respect for the tradition while also allowing for a bit of freedom from it are both so important.

At the core of YAMATO’s performances is passion and spirit, that Ogawa hopes their live performances will express to audiences, that will make their “bodies jump and their hearts race.”

“People act out of passion. People are moved by passion. We as YAMATO, want to express the energy of that passion on the stage. And we want to throw that energy to the audience’s heart through the Taiko beat,” says Ogawa. “After the show, we hope the audience understands that we all have this passion in our bodies and minds.”

YAMATO – THE DRUMMERS OF JAPAN

YAMATO is a Japanese Taiko drumming group based in Asuka-mura Nara Prefecture which is well known by Japanese people as the hometown of Japan. They call themselves “YAMATO, the Taiko drumming group that travels all over the world.” They have given more than 4,000 shows across 54 countries around the world since their formation in 1993.

YAMATO’s Taiko work cannot be fully described by the word “performance.”

They have performed in theaters, schools, all types of events, and even held workshops and Taiko lessons. They are spending a half year on a Japan tour and a half year for the world tour. Their motto is “We go everywhere when somebody needs YAMATO! And bringing energy to the people living in the world!” They bring joy to the world.

On stage, they are standing with more than 40 Taiko drums and all of them are having different characters. For example, their largest drum called “Odaiko,” produced from a huge tree over 400 years old, is approximately two meters in diameter and weighs 500 kg. All other Taiko drums are different sizes and have different sounds.

The members of the group have trained their bodies to the limit to beat these massive Taiko drums.

The acoustic pressure far surpasses what one could imagine.

They do not simply make their Taiko drums explode with sound; they produce delicate music that provides the listener with a palette of meticulously crafted sound. This is why YAMATO’s original performances are known as “Physical music,” and continue to receive high acclaim all over the world. YAMATO is sometimes intense, sometimes sad, sometimes comforting, and in the next moment comical on stage.

The audience is more than a group of bystanders at their performances.

The audience is engulfed in the sound of the Taiko, and sweat, cry, and laugh; they become one with the performers. All types of people gather around the sound of the Taiko, interweaving their lives, and feeling the power of each other’s inner passion and heart.

They come together to create an instant in which they truly feel alive.
