History of Mumbai Film City

The history of India being introduced to Cinema dates back to the year 1896, when the very first feature film was screened at the Watson Hotel in Bombay (Mumbai was then known as Bombay). Although it wasn’t an Indian language film, it still managed the Indian creative minds to be fascinated and trigger intrigue and get into learning the craft of filmmaking.

The first full length motion film of Indian origin was produced by Dadasaheb Phalke, who is considered as the pioneer of Indian Cinema. He had produced the epic Raja Harishchandra, a silent feature film starring a cast of all male actors since females weren’t considered for acting jobs back then. The film was released in 1913.

Coming to the history of Film City Mumbai, the seed that was sown in 1913 after the release of Raja Harishchandra, kept on growing and prospering. It was during the year 1977 when visionaries of Indian Cinema like Late Shri V. Shantaram, Late Shri B. R. Chopra and the legendary actor Dilip Kumar came together and persuaded for the establishment of Maharashtra Film, Stage & Cultural Development Corporation Ltd., which was also called Filmcity.

This was done by the Department of Cultural Affairs Government of Maharashtra under the Company Act 1956, on 26th September 1977. It was given the name Film City and was later renamed as Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in 2001 to recognize the contribution of the founder of Indian Film Industry.

The Film City was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Yashwantrao Chavan.

Since then, Indian Film Industry has become the highest number of feature films producing entities followed by Nigerian Film Industry, followed by Hollywood. The numbers are as of 2013.

The place is already well known as the "city of dreams" you would see any kind of people here in the studio and what exciting was that when you see the acting scene right in front of you. There are lots of tourists like me that day and we all really enjoyed the visit to this Bollywood studio with good pictures taken. A very well-organized tour would definitely recommend this trip to all my friends and surely to you all.

I am a Bollywood fan I am so excited about this tour, seeing the famous celebrity house and the Bollywood studio was just like a dream. Taken part in the show and dance with them was just unbelievable. Thanks, Thrillophilia.

Also they showed a really poor live shoot, they were no known actors or directors and the set was hardly there, just cameras and a white curtain. Also the tour guide hardly knows anything and he constantly irritates you with the most irrelevant details. The worst part of the tour is the tour guide. He only blabbers and makes up stuff. You sit in a dirty bus with a guide who screeches into a microphone, and points out various things on the side of the road. If you a maniac fan you might give it two stars; it deserves none. We were not alone; most of the people in the bus were complaining. A Complete Guide To Goregaon Filmcity, Mumbai

baghban-house-at-goregaon-filmcity-mumbai

Mumbai, the birthplace of Bollywood attracts millions of people to the city in search of jobs or to solely meet their favourite celebrity. Bollywood influences our society greatly, from clothing trends to celebrations. We want everything to be in Bollywood style.

I’ve spent my childhood watching Govinda movies and grooving to KJo’s movie tracks. Therefore, I decided to visit the Film City during my Mumbai trip in October 2021 to relive my childhood and watch the film sets come alive.

Here’s a video of my tour that’ll give you a glimpse of the enormous Filmcity.

The Film City doesn’t allow walk-in visitors unless you know someone personally who works here. Therefore, the best way to explore this place is to book a tour with the “Mumbai Filmcity Tours” to make the most of your time. They have multiple options to choose from, the lowest starting from 650 INR per person.

Table of Contents

What and where is the Filmcity?

Dadasaheb Phalke Chitra Nagari a.k.a, the Filmcity, is named after the father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke. A studio complex comprising 16 enclosed and 42 outdoor sets for shooting films and serials, located in Goregaon near Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Ticket and Timings

ticket-counter-mumbai-filmcity-tour

Mumbai Filmcity Tours offer three types of guided tours, a short two-hour tour around the Filmcity, a Bollywood city tour that will take you in and around the Filmcity, and a live show tour, where you” get to visit a live shooting set. You can check the timings and book your tickets here .

Tip:  Only limited seats are available for each slots daily. Therefore, I recommend to pre-book tickets online to avoid last minute availability issue.

My experience touring the Filmcity

mumbai-filmcity-tours-bus

I booked the two-hour group tour that took us around the Filmcity. A professional guide accompanied us and enthusiastically educated us about the sets, history and ongoing shoots. It was a very informative and entertaining tour that helped us understand the history and culture of the Filmcity. Even though we didn’t spot any celebrities, the anticipation of spotting one made it supremely exciting.

On our way, we stopped by a few outdoor sets and took a 15-minute halt at the cafeteria for refreshments(not complimentary) before heading back. Here’s what I saw at the Filmcity.

baghban-house-at-goregaon-filmcity-mumbai

Other locations that we came across:

  • Bollywood’s favourite suicide point, where the protagonist is either killed (but somehow survives) or jumps voluntarily. This location was also used to shoot some of the most romantic songs in the 90s.
  • The famous forest from CID, where ACP Praduman finds most of his clues.
  • Daily soap sets like the Goenka villa of Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata ha and Gokuldham society from Tarak Mehta ka Ulta Chashma.
  • Other TV show sets like Big Boss, KBC and Comedy Nights with Kapil.

Mumbai film city tour – Bollywood theme park in Goregaon, Mumbai

' src=

Mumbai film city tour has been on my bucket list ever since I found out that such a tour existed on Bookmyshow. Of course, to experience the glitz and glamour. Being someone who is born and brought up in Mumbai, I have never travelled the city like a tourist. It was my first time, and I was totally elated to celebrate my birthday by exploring the Bollywood theme park in Goregaon Mumbai. I was not surprised to see many people from different states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, on this tour. There were hardly any Mumbaikars.

3 Idiots props

Table of Contents

What is Mumbai Film City?

Mumbai film city is the prime location for various film and television shoots. It is located in Aarey colony, Goregaon East . Also known as Dadasaheb Phalke Chitra Nagari, the film studio complex has recording rooms, temple, prison, open grounds, gardens, mountains, lakes, and institutes, all in all one-stop for end-to-end shooting of movies and television shows. Most Bollywood films are shot at this location.

For Bollywood fans and strugglers, this is a must-visit place in Mumbai especially now that one can buy a ticket and enter the film city to explore the world of cinema, up and close.

Bollywood theme park

A unique theme park, tagged as Mumbai’s newest entertainment destination, the Bollywood theme park offers a well-planned tour for all movie enthusiasts. You can do Mumbai film city booking online from Bookmyshow.com or you can buy a ticket at the counter, near the entry gate.

We booked our tickets online and were surprised to see a bus full of people for a 12.30 pm show that too on a Wednesday. So, if you plan to buy tickets at the counter, reach early. They have many shows throughout the day, the first show starting at 11 am onwards and the last show at 4: 30 pm .

Grand sets at Bollywood Park

Mumbai Film City tour – My experience

The guided tour inside the Mumbai Film City starts as we board the AC bus, accompanied by a guide who shares the titbits of Bollywood and points out several shoot locations in an interesting manner. As a visitor, you cannot get off the bus unless the guide instructs. Nevertheless, from the bus itself, you can view several shoot locations and feel like a part of this magical world.

At the entry itself, we saw Mr. Subhash Ghai who runs a film institute, Whispering Woods, inside the film city. Later as we came across the institute the guide showed us the spots where college scenes in several movies have been shot, like 3 Idiots, Lakshya, etc.

Bollywood theme park grandeur

From time to time, the tour guide instructed us to look left and right to checkout shoot locations. The start of the tour was a little disappointing as we could hardly see any film set or actors from the bus.

Although, we saw (of course from a long distance) a few sets:

  • Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah set all dolled up for the Independence Day Celebration episode
  • Anupama set, the highest TRP show at present on TV.
  • Shaheer Sheikh is a popular Indian actor on Television (don’t know which show he was shooting for).
  • KBC and The Kapil Sharma show set (of course from the outside).

How long is the guided tour inside Mumbai Film City?

The Mumbai Film city Tour with Bollywood Park guided tour is approximately three hours. But the guide cum host was so entertaining that at no point where we bored. Despite not getting a chance to visit the live shoot locations or meet any celebrity in person, it was intriguing to be a part of this tour.

There are designated stops where the bus will halt and let you explore the sets on foot.

This was the home where Amitabh Bachchan starer Baghban was shot. The guide beautifully narrated an interesting background story that was much fun to listen.

Baghban set - Mumbai film city

Next to it is the famous temple that we all have seen in several movies. The amusing thing about the temple is that it had no idol inside. As per the film’s demand, they place the idols and shoot the scene.

Temple tour included in Mumbai film city tour

From here, we all saw the Khandala point, usually shown in movies to depict accident scenes. The Kashmir point, where the recent debacle Laal Singh Chaddha was shot, and the village shown in the movie is also inside the Mumbai film city.

It’s amazing to see these locations and relate them to the movies we have seen over the years. The tour is planned such that they have saved the best part for the last.

Bollywood Park – Main attractions

The 3-hour guided tour concludes at Bollywood Park where there’s a line-up of several activities to make you feel close to stars of our Bollywood industry. The main attractions of the Bollywood Park include:

  • Live entertainment shows
  • Dance performances by celebrity duplicates, like Salman Khan

  • Walk through the wax museum

Salman khan duplicate LIVE performance in Mumbai film city tour

The live entertainment show was the icing on the cake. The dance performance by the look-alike of Salman Khan and the stand-up comedy by the look-alike of Dr. Mashoor Gulati was worth the money. All in all, you will get a good understanding of the making of the films and the hard work that makes it all magical on the big screen.

Points to remember:

  • Mumbai film city ticket price ranges from Rs. 899 to Rs. 999 depending on the day you choose to visit.
  • Book your tickets in advance and reach the venue, at least an hour in advance. (The google maps can come across as confusing as the entry shown from within the Aarey colony is for celebrities only).
  • Carry a water bottle as the bus will not stop midway and there are no shops until you reach Bollywood Park.
  • Have food at the Bollywood Park canteen. The taste is yummy, and the price is reasonable.
  • Wear comfortable shoes as you will have to walk to explore the many stops.
  • The tour might extend beyond 3 hours so have extra time on your hands.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Mumbai film city tour. I wish to applaud the Bollywood Park staff for arranging a professional tour and providing a glimpse of the film industry. The tour guide was amazing, and his imitation of the popular movie characters added to the overall package. If you are planning for a one-day trip, this is a must-visit place in Mumbai for tourists as well as locals.  If you are looking for suggestions for One day trip near navi mumbai , checkout the blog: Five best places to visit in Navi Mumbai – Best of India Travels and A day trip to A iroli Fla mingo Sanctuary: Coastal & Marine Biodiversity Centre, Navi Mumbai (bestofindiatravels.com) .

History of Film City

The time when film got introduced in India was the time back in 1896. With the screening of the first feature film Watson Hotel the introduction of films happened in India and Mumbai (then Bombay). However, even if the film was not in native Indian language it still triggered and inspired the Indian creative minds to a lot of extent. Dadasaheb Phalke the pioneer of Indian Cinema who produced the first ever full length motion picture of Indian origin. Later he also produced the iconic epic Raja Harishchandra which was a silent feature film with only male actors in 1913. Back then females were not even in consideration for a position to act in films.

Much later in 1977 when the film industry was already well established and growing with extreme vigour the idea of making a film city evolved. Visionaries of Indian Cinema Like B R Chopra, Shri V Shantaram, Legendary actor Dilip Kumar all came together to establish the Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation LTD which is at present popular as the Film City Mumbai.

The Department of Cultural Affairs under the Government of Maharashtra passed the idea under the Company Act 1956 on the 26 th  September of 1977. Moreover the film city got its name as the Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in 2001 based on the founder and pioneer of the India Film Industry. The then Chief Minister of Maharashtra Mr. Yashwantrao Chavan inaugurated the film city. And since then the Film City Mumbai has been one of the most interesting shoot locations. And at present it is also one of the most important tourist destinations as well.

I must say you’ve done a amazing job with this. Also, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Firefox. Superb Blog!

Exploring a destination...

The joy of travel comes in exploring new things. Planting your feet somewhere you’ve never been before brings with it the rush of discovery and the joy of pushing back on the boundaries of your world.

But when one does arrive at that fresh frontier, there are ways better than others to begin your journey of discovery. Follow these steps and see the world with a new light.

• Discover a new city through a food tour. Food tour’s are the easiest way to take a tour, learn about the local delicacies, and the best of all, get great tips that aren’t just “local” tips for tourists, but sometimes, lessons for a lifetime too

• Use Public Transportation. When you are in a new city, you can possibly see places and people that you wouldn’t normally see when simply walking to the places that checks your list. Some buses or rails take you to parts of the city you wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Whilst using public transportation, just ensure that you are following the local norms and do remember to watch the locals!

• Find a local festival. Go beyond what other tourists might do while visiting a place. Look for the unique things you would want to do. Use social media or the local tourism website to find out what’s going on locally. You may have to move out of the center of the city to do some of the less popular but more unique things, so just keep that in mind!

tour to film city mumbai

By Saumya Roy Photographs by Atul Loke

Saumya Roy, a Mumbai-based author, has written a book about the city’s wealth, poverty and the waste pickers who make their living in its landfill.

Mumbai appears as much a dream as a city. Sprinkled with the stardust of Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry that bases itself here, and studded with billionaires , India’s hyperkinetic metropolis, known as Bombay until 1995, feels like a place where anything is possible. But over the years, the city’s reality has been one of crumbling infrastructure, unmoving traffic and unending slums. Amid tight pandemic lockdowns, Mumbai turned into one of the world’s great construction sites , trying to remake itself with new towers, subway lines and bridges . Take in the dizzying juxtapositions — while discovering experimental performances in former textile mills and serene, ancient caves a short drive from the urban chaos — in a city guaranteed to look different again the next time you visit.

  • The Afghan Church , formally known as the Church of St. John the Evangelist, is a newly restored 19th-century house of worship that serves as a poignant memorial for fallen Indian and British soldiers.
  • Mani Bhavan , the former home of Mohandas K. Gandhi, is now a museum that preserves details of his spartan life, underscoring his emphasis on self-reliance.
  • Moghal Masjid , a Shiite mosque built in 1860, is known for its intricate blue tile work.
  • Hasnabad Dargah , known as Mumbai’s Taj Mahal for its resemblance to that celebrated monument, is a milky-white mausoleum that evokes calm in the middle of the city.
  • Magen David Synagogue is a large historic temple, painted sky blue, in the Byculla neighborhood.
  • Stroll by murals of Bollywood stars in Bandra , a coastal neighborhood of old Portuguese bungalows and celebrity homes.
  • Masque is a high-end restaurant that reinvents traditional Indian dishes in modern, surprising ways over a nine-course tasting menu.
  • Kala Ghoda Cafe serves healthy breakfasts, including spicy egg dishes.
  • Swati Snacks , a Mumbai institution, offers street-food classics and traditional favorites in a bright, clean setting.
  • Aaswad Upahar and Mithai Griha is a popular, no-frills restaurant in the Dadar neighborhood that offers a mango-themed thali (a platter filled with various small dishes) in April and May, when the fruit is in season.
  • Bastian at the Top , a sceney rooftop restaurant with lavish décor that includes an indoor swimming pool, is worth a stop to take in the views of the bay over a drink.
  • Moonray , a newly opened women’s wear store, brings together immaculate European cuts and handmade embroidery from Mumbai.
  • Payal Khandwala sells silk tops, sharply cut suits and trench coats in bold-colored Indian fabric.
  • Ogaan showcases a range of local designers whose garments include ornate Indian wedding wear and silk shirts.
  • Kitab Khana has a large and well-curated selection of books on Indian literature, politics and Gandhian thought, set in a building that is more than a century old.
  • Induri Saree Centre sells glittering, traditional saris in a candy-box-size store.
  • The Taj Mahal Palace , an ornate hotel open since 1903, looks over the Arabian Sea and the historic Gateway of India arch. A memorial in the lobby commemorates the terror attack at the hotel in 2008. Rooms start at 23,550 rupees, or about $282.
  • Sea Green Hotel , on the curved, lit-up shoreline called the Queen’s Necklace, has basic rooms with gorgeous bay views. Rooms start at around 9,000 rupees.
  • The Grand Hotel is a century-old establishment in the city’s historic Ballard Estate district, an area that is also home to one of Mumbai’s best-known Parsi restaurants, Britannia & Co. You can also walk to many of the city’s well-known attractions. Rooms start at around 6,850 rupees.
  • Traveling in Mumbai’s packed trains is fast, efficient and an experience like no other. Millions travel on the local trains every year, and vendors and singers walk through compartments (25 rupees for a first-class single ticket). Black-and-yellow cabs , which use meters with fixed rates, and ride-hailing apps like Uber are readily available. Mumbai’s red buses also offer a breezy, scenic and cheap way to get around the city (from 5 rupees per trip).

People stand in a semi-circle on a leafy street reading from a stapled paper booklet.

See spindly chimneys rising amid luxury hotels and condos in the jagged skyline of Lower Parel, a rapidly gentrifying precinct in central Mumbai. The chimneys are relics of the area’s former textile mills, which began slowly being redeveloped into malls after a worker strike in the 1980s. Trace Mumbai’s working-class roots here with the writer Saranya Subramanian, who leads the Bombay Poetry Crawl (600 rupees, or about $7), a series of walking tours conducted through the lens of poetry and local history. During the tour, Ms. Subramanian reads poetry by workers and encourages participants to read, too. She leads the tour monthly and also hosts a range of other poetry walks in the city, including one on a local train. Check her Instagram page, @thebombaypoetrycrawl , for scheduling.

A person with long hair performs to a small crowd using a microphone and a laptop. A spotlight shines on the performer, and the crowd is washed in a red light.

Take a car to the nearby G5A , a cultural center housed in a repurposed textile mill compound. Trees grow out of the stone walls of a neighboring former mill , and skyscrapers rise, seemingly by the minute, on the other side. Catch a show at G5A, which hosts edgy art performances, movie screenings and discussions in its small theater, or on its terrace, with the moon glowing through the Mumbai haze. Recent shows include a poetry reading by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Forrest Gander, along with the celebrated Indian poet Arvind Krishna Mehrotra; Norwegian and Bangalorean jazz bands; and a Kashmiri film. Tickets from 250 to 700 rupees.

A close-up of a person pouring a liquid from a stone vessel into a crunchy, puffed snack with a hole in the center.

Walk next door, still within the mill compound, to the high-ceilinged and warmly lit Masque , a restaurant that reinvents traditional Indian dishes across a nine-course tasting menu (5,200 rupees per person). It takes puran poli and amti, for instance, a sweet, lentil-filled flatbread and side of spicy coconut dal that is often eaten during Mumbai festivals, and remixes it as a bite-size chickpea tart with a hint of jaggery (Indian raw sugar), filled with green peas or crab and topped with coconut foam. Pav, a ubiquitous Mumbai bread bun with a crackly top and slightly sweet, dense interior, acquires a croissant-like, buttery texture here — dip it into a silky morel or lamb curry. Cap off the meal with a popsicle made with unlikely layers of Indian pickle, mulberry and white chocolate. Vegetarian menus available.

A street that is busy with pedestrians and lined with shopfronts. The facade of a building that faces the street appears to be old and rundown.

Trace Mumbai’s working-class roots in Lower Parel with the Bombay Poetry Crawl, a series of walking tours conducted through the lens of poetry and local history.

A close-up of a stained glass window depicting a man in a red robe kneeling in prayer.

Walk through the soft-colored shadows cast by stained-glass windows in the Church of St. John the Evangelist, more commonly known as the Afghan Church , which reopened in March after a two-year renovation. The building, in the leafy Navy Nagar, a naval area at the southern tip of Mumbai, was completed in 1858 and commemorates the more than 4,500 Indian and British soldiers who died during the first Anglo-Afghan war, including in its disastrous retreat from Kabul. The church is also known for multifaith prayers, Indian classical music concerts and a midnight Mass at Christmas. Entry is free.

A plate of scrambled eggs, buttered toast and half a roasted tomato rests on a table. A cup of coffee with steamed milk is visible in the background on the same table.

Kala Ghoda Cafe

Dig into a breakfast of akuri, a spicy scrambled egg dish (345 rupees) that is traditional in India’s Parsi community, at Kala Ghoda Cafe , in the Kala Ghoda neighborhood. Then walk to the sprawling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya , a museum with manicured lawns and a Gothic-style building topped with a bulbous dome. As part of “ Ancient Sculptures ,” showing through October, chiseled Greek gods and Egyptian deities from the British Museum and the J. Paul Getty Museum share space with Assyrian gods from CSMVS’s permanent collection. The museum’s permanent galleries are a trove of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sculptures and also feature artifacts from the ancient Indus Valley civilization. Tickets, 150 rupees for Indian nationals; 700 rupees for foreigners.

A brightly lit store with white walls displays a long rack of clothing, including gingham skirts and tops, white shirts and denim apparel.

Stroll the Kala Ghoda neighborhood, starting with Artisans ’, a gallery and shop in a graffiti-covered building that showcases traditional Indian crafts. In the area’s ever-expanding fashion district, browse crisp white shirts with handmade lace collars (from around 9,500 rupees) at Moonray , a women’s fashion label and shop (its co-founder also runs the Chanakya School of Craft , which teaches women embroidery and collaborates with Dior). Also check out Payal Khandwala , which has silk tops (14,000 rupees), sharply cut suits and trench coats in bold-colored Indian fabric, and Ogaan , with heavily embellished wedding dresses, pleated dresses and more. Then walk to Kitab Khana , an independent bookstore in a more-than-century-old building with Corinthian columns in the nearby Fort district. Browse the well-curated selection of Indian literature and the books on history and Gandhian thought that line the high shelves.

People eat from bright-yellow plates in a sparsely decorated restaurant with diner-like seating and metallic table tops. A chalkboard on the wall lists menu items and says the name of the restaurant, "Swati Snacks."

Swati Snacks

A dizzying range of delicacies can be found on Mumbai’s khao gallis, a Hindi term for “food streets.” The safest way to try them all (and avoid tummy trouble) might be at Swati Snacks , a six-decade-old restaurant in the Tardeo area. Have the vada pav (175 rupees), like garlicky potato sliders, and the signature panki (230 rupees), a wispy rice pancake flavored with mint or dill that arrives steaming in a banana-leaf parcel. Then visit the nearby Mani Bhavan , a three-story building where Mohandas K. Gandhi, known as the father of the nation, often stayed; it is now a museum. Spinning wheels and floor seating in his preserved, spartan bedroom provide a window to his belief that the route to Indian independence could come only through discipline and self-reliance. Entry, 20 rupees.

A person wearing a collared shirt rests against a wall that features vibrant blue tiling in geometric patterns.

Moghal Masjid

Take a car to Byculla, the chaotic old quarter of Mumbai. Get a coffee (Americano, 228 rupees) at the Craftery by Subko , a new Mumbai cafe and roastery chain bringing hipsters to this part of the city. Then drive through the busy, narrow streets to see some of Mumbai’s diverse and beautiful religious monuments. Visit the nearby Moghal Masjid , a jewel-like, Iranian-style Shiite mosque built in 1860, with intricate blue tiling adorning a curved entrance. Women cannot pray inside the mosque but can enter the compound, which has a pool for ablution. Take in the facade of Hasnabad Dargah , a pristine, ivory-colored mausoleum, known as Mumbai’s Taj Mahal for its resemblance to the original (entry only for Shia Ismaili Muslims). Not far from there is the Magen David Synagogue (entry, 300 rupees), recognizable by its sky blue clock tower, built in the 1860s to serve Mumbai’s once wealthy and influential, but now vanishing , Jewish community.

One person takes a photo using a smartphone inside a restaurant with large windows that reveal an orange sun, shrouded in smog, suspended above the sea.

Bastian at the Top

In the Dadar neighborhood, shop for handwoven saris (from 2,000 rupees) and scarves at Induri Saree Centre , a candy-box-size store. Then line up at Aaswad Upahar and Mithai Griha , a no-frills Dadar institution best visited in April and May with the arrival of fragrant and luscious Alphonso mangoes. Aaswad does a seasonal mango-themed thali (a platter of various small dishes; 470 rupees) that includes a saffron, mango and cardamom drink; a mango dal; and chilled mango pulp called aamras that is the taste of a Mumbai summer in a bowl. Then cross the street to the gleaming, new Kohinoor Square mall and take the elevator 48 floors to Bastian at the Top . With a tree-lined plunge pool and glowing figurines carved into giant pillars, it can feel more like a theme park than a restaurant (it often attracts Bollywood celebrities). It’s worth a cocktail (1,295 rupees) just to take in the sweeping views of the bay.

A person dressed in black performs on a stage to a watching crowd. The performer is backlit by a wall of lamps.

Catch a show at G5A, a cultural center housed in a repurposed textile mill compound.

Two people walk past a vibrant street mural of three dancing women dressed in ornate Indian dress.

A mural by Ranjit Dahiya

The laid-back suburb of Bandra has Portuguese bungalows, Bollywood studios and the full wattage of star homes along with fans hoping for a glimpse. The best bet for encountering Bollywood stars is on the Technicolor, larger-than-life murals in the area’s charming lanes. See a pistol-wielding Dharmendra, from the iconic 1975 movie “Sholay,” opposite the Subko cafe on Chapel Road. Next to it is a triptych of Bollywood’s dancing divas — a feathered Helen and a bejeweled Waheeda Rehman and Asha Parekh. (Ranjit Dahiya, the artist behind many of these murals, also teaches workshops .) Stroll on to Waroda Road (past a moody depiction of the celebrated actor Irrfan Khan) to reach the brightly colored Veronica’s , an all-day cafe that has become something of a living room for Bandra’s young set, who come for creative bites like chicken-and-cheese-filled breakfast momos (395 rupees), potato waffles (350 rupees) and babka stuffed with chorizo (275 rupees).

Leave the chaos of the city behind, driving north to reach the entrance of Sanjay Gandhi National Park , a 40-square-mile preserve where deer, monkeys and the occasional leopard roam. From inside the park, minivans drive visitors about 10 minutes through the forest (1,000 rupees round-trip) to the bottom of a hill. From there, walk up to the Kanheri Caves, a Buddhist complex of more than 100 caves, the oldest dating back 2,000 years, carved into basalt. Some form large, pillared prayer halls, while others feature carved serene Buddhist deities in prayer. Also see the waterways, loosely cut into the hills, that provided water to the monks who lived and meditated there many centuries ago. Park entry, 95 rupees; caves entry, 25 rupees.

Dev Patel in Monkey Man.

Monkey Man review – Dev Patel goes wild in ultraviolent Mumbai revenge flick

Patel exacts wildly OTT vengeance in the neon-lit city in this stylish and exciting action thriller, which doubles as a boisterous satire of Modi-esque nationalism

D ev Patel brings the gonzo chaos for this very impressive writing-directing feature debut, with Jordan Peele on board as a producer; it’s a wildly over-the-top revenge action thriller on the teeming but uncliched streets of Mumbai – doubling as a boisterous satire of Modi-esque nationalism. As the lead performer, Patel shows us some pretty serious martial arts chops, kickboxing and thumping seven shades of ordure out of the punchbag, and then the bad guys – and periodically pausing, of course, attractively dropletted with sweat, to let us get an eyeful of those sculpted abs. And he also gives us a gloriously old fashioned men’s room punch-up, with the flimsy wooden dividing walls of the lavatory cubicles going over like dominos and each washroom mirror smashed to its constituent molecules.

Patel plays a guy calling himself “Bobby”, a fake name taken ominously from a brand of bleach; as a kid, he lived in the forest with his adored single mum, who held him spellbound with tales of Lord Hanuman, the monkey deity. A greedy property developer passing himself off as a spiritual guru (in league with a populist rightwing politician) wanted this forest and brought tragedy into the kid’s life, with the help of a hateful, corrupt police chief (Sikander Kher). Now Bobby is driven by a need for payback, infiltrating the criminal organisation, biding his time, and earning cash on the side as a monkey-masked fighter at bare-knuckle bouts run by a leering master of ceremonies played by Sharlto Copley; he is dreaming of the time when he will rain down terrible vengeance.

Patel clearly thinks that his movie looks like John Wick; hence a rather self-conscious pre-emptive line about that well known Keanu Reeves franchise in the script. But that’s not precisely the resemblance; given Patel’s need to avenge a dead parent, his personal growth “wilderness” experiences at the hands of socially marginalised but wise people, and his bloody and ultraviolent attack in the neon-lit city – Monkey Man looks more like Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives crossed with The Lion King. And Patel turns it into a very exciting and stylish movie. His previous acting work didn’t obviously point to a kickass action career, although his performance in The Green Knight might have given us a hint. He’s evolved.
