An excellent itinerary giving good cultural insight, food experience & history lesson. Adequate time was given in each city to have guided tours, explore on our own or choose optional add-ons.
SPITZE ORGANISATION. Alles hat perfekt geklappt. Tour war sehr abwechslungsreich und ich habe jeden Tag richtig tolle Erlebnisse gehabt. Nettere / bessere Reiseleiterin kann ich mir nicht vorstellen - Nui danke dir!

Rhi is an amazing trip manager, better than you can comprehend if you’ve never being on a trip with her. She is caring, thoughtful and makes an incredible effort to make sure you get everything out the trip you wanted. The Contiki itinary was already very good but with Rhi’s local knowledge, she was able to suggest extra things that weren’t included; whether that be activities or local cuisine.
The tour was brilliant, it hit all the main attractions as well as some off the beaten track

Incredible experience. Definitely recommend. Only reason for the 4 stars is for some smaller things - not great accommodations, lots of awful driving experiences (if you have motion sickness, REALLY bad), the other people on the trip (very young crowd only interested in partying - not interested in the culture of Thailand). Our guide was outstanding. The activities themselves were amazing as well. If you get a good group, you’re sure to have an absolutely amazing time. Took me a few days to find likeminded people to hang out with, but once I found them, I had the time of my life.
This was my first trip with Tru Travels and first ever group tour in general and I had the best time! Can’t thank Mickey enough for making sure we were all happy, going above and beyond to provide all the information we needed and making sure we had the time of our lives even through the lows. You can tell he really loves his job and is somehow always happy! I loved the combination of doing the north and south of Thailand, there was always a good balance of having lots of activities to do and things to see as well being able to wind down and relax. I’ll never forget my time in Thailand and all the amazing people I got to meet! Would 100% book another tour with Tru Travels.

Thailand and Vietnam were absolutely amazing! The tours were so much fun and were filled with loads of activities. You really get to experience the culture of the country! Lorna was our group leader in Vietnam, she was absolutely amazing and both her overall and cultural knowledge were great.
I’d recommend arriving a day earlier in Hanoi if possible because I wish we had more time in the tour to explore on our own. Other than that I feel the itinerary was great and gave a good insight into what Vietnam has to offer.

Overall, good. Lots of experiences, good Guide, good hotels and transfers.
Great tour with the most friendly Tourguide you can get! We went on the River Kwai & Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour in may 2024 and we loved the insights we received! Our Tourguide, Nai, has been so kind and knowledgeable and really made our experience worth. After a very interesting stop in ayutthaya, where you can experience the summer residence of the King as well as the ancient temples from the old capital the tour moved on to Kanchanaburi where we stayed for two nights. There we were able to experience and swim in the beautiful Erawan Waterfalls, see the Kwai bridge and ride along the infamous Burma Siam Railway. You will also learn a lot about the constructions of the railway during world war 2 where many local workers and Prisoners of War built the railway in 1 year with many casualties due to the difficult terrain and working conditions - the cemetery and the museum a very well kept and very informative. Last but not least, you will also experience the night market where Nai showed us a lot of local specialities that we were eager to taste. Overall and amazing experience that was a perfect way to spend three days around Bangkok. 5/5 well deserved!

Danny and Jack were amazing guides and made this experience fun for everyone involved 💖
This was my first time traveling with a tour company and I had an amazing experience every step of the way! I asked so many questions throughout the booking process about the itinerary and dietary restrictions and everyone I spoke to was so patient and accomodating. The itinerary included tours and activities that were fun and exciting. The views we woke up to every morning, the beaches, and the snorkeling experience was all so breathtakingly beautiful; and I couldn't have asked for a better group and tour guide to travel with! Luka was so knowledgeable, caring, and fun; and he always went above and beyond to help us with anything we needed. Thank you for such an amazing trip! I highly reccomend the Thailand Island Hopper Tour with Feel Free Travel!

Overall, it was a good experience that I wouldn’t do again😁 it’s a backpacking tour, but some of the hostel we stayed in has no AC and it was not one location. The places we visited were amazing and lucky me to see these places. Tour guide was not welcoming at start but and she didn’t introduce us to each other properly.
Jay Jay and Morgan were great tour guides! My husband and I requested private accommodations the first day of the tour (for a separate upgraded cost, of course) and they made those arrangements for us seamlessly. They also had numerous recommendations for food and activities on the days we had free time, which was very helpful. We loved this tour and enjoyed our time immensely!

The tour guides were very good and accommodating. They are very knowledgeable and helpful. Overall it was a great experience in Bangkok and Phuket.
For the most part everything was very well looked after. Our biggest let down was the amount of religious temples and pagodas visited. The last week we were telling the guides we didn't want to visit anymore. More wildlife and agriculture related excursions should be added. Rice was beening harvested in vietnam and even though with time constraints I understand we could not stop , but there was minimal information added.

We booked a Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand 10-days tour with Realistic Asia and they were excellent. Everything was well organized. The tour guides were nice and friendly. The itinerary was great! Our Agent, Long Pham, was incredible. He followed up and made sure that we were well taken care of. We highly recommend it, and will surely book with them again in the future.
An unforgettable trip to Thailand and Vietnam. Jack our tour guide in Bangkok was very friendly and informative. Our contact person Lucy Do was always available for any concerns such as switching the Mekong Delta trip to visit the American War museum and doing our own thing in Saigon. We really appreciated the time to ourselves on this tour for visiting many temples.

We did the 23 day Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand tour. Here are our thoughts and some hopefully helpful information for those considering this trip in the future. We loved Vietnam. Our guide Duc was excellent and the pace was varied with some long days interspersed with shorter days. In this leg, we got to spend time in the cities and villages exploring and did a multitude of different activities. Very good mix of things. Loved Ha Long Bay. Cambodia was fine. It was only 5 days and our guide was ok. Some neat adventures like the bamboo train and bat cave, plus Angkor Wat as the highlight. Thailand was terrible. We spent 4 days out of 6 on the bus for over 6 hours each day just visiting temples. Too many temples and too long on the bus. We would arrive at hotels after 7 pm, told to find dinner but have your bags out by 630 am the next morning. No time to explore the towns or enjoy the hotel amenities. The itinerary was a joke for these times talking about enjoying time at the pool or local markets when we arrived so late. Little to no culture in the Thailand tour. We felt cheated on learning about Thailand, and it was exhausting. We would recommend travel talk do up some FAQs for travellers speaking about visas, (some wasted money on a Cambodian e visa and photo, neither of which was needed) currencies, water consumption, luggage limits well before the trip (were told limits 3 days before when we had already left home). Tell people inclusion fees must be paid in cash so people can plan for this. No credit card option is available. So be prepared to visit the atm regularly. The overall itinerary needs to be updated as prices are not current and some places have been closed since Covid and substitutions were made. Some optional activities were not available. Our actual tour ended 2 days before it should have with the Thailand guide leaving us Friday afternoon and we were on own own the rest of that day, Saturday and Sunday morning. Look for hotels closer to things to do in the cities. Some were more than 30 minutes away from anything and nothing around for restaurants. Overall, we could recommend Vietnam and perhaps Cambodia, but not Thailand.
Should have been called a “Temple Tour” as we visited more temples than anything else. Mostly the hotels were good with the exception of The Wink hotel, which was changed pretty much last minute from the Paragon Saigon Hotel, which was 3 star at best. It was a shame that we didn’t get to spend more time in these hotels - boarding the bus at 7 a.m and reaching the next hotel at 6:45 p.m, still needing to get dinner just for a repeat experience the next day was really not enjoyable. Moreover, during these 12 hour tours, our stops were for temples and one unspectacular lake; very disappointing. The speed boat ride to Cambodia was also disappointing, we were jammed in tight and seating was so low we couldn’t see anything. Then on arrival at Cambodia, we were faced with a very steep ramp to pull our luggage up and NO ONE to help- no porters for us but other tours also disembarking there had porters???

I booked the trip "Bangkok Must See - 4 Days". Everything went well. However, it is not a group trip in the classic sense (as I originally understood it) so I will describe it briefly. Before the trip, the travel coordinator contacts you and sends you the voucher for the trip. This includes the transfer from the airport to the hotel. The hotel is located near Khaosan Road, which is a good (tourist) location. The hotel itself (New Siam Palace) is partly very nicely renovated and partly very old. There is no program on the first day. On the 2nd day, you are picked up by a private guide and the most important temples are visited. On the 3rd day, there is a group tour to Ayutthaya with people who have booked this as a day trip. There is also no program on the 4th day. Overall, I'm really glad that I booked it this way, as it was my first long-distance trip on my own, but in future I will probably book the excursions and the hotel separately. Nevertheless, thanks for the organization to Tourradar and Ha Nguyen!
It’s truly amazing tour, well organised from pickup, drop off, guides and places to go it’s well thought. The location of hotel was well thought if any free time there’s always something for us it can be dining, walking, sight seeing etc. or chilling by the hotel pool. Our tour representative “Ha Nguyen” she is fantastic through the 18 days tour. So happy with all her help always at the end when needed. I’m so please we did this journey of our life time. I would definitely recommend it to our family and friends. Again many thanks for the wonderful experiences with less stress.

Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Learn more about Thailand

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Top 10 iconic Thai landscapes

Enjoy this historical park for yourself during a 10 day Highlights of Thailand tour.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

We've made sure to stop by Krabi on our incredible 28 day Bangkok to Bali adventure - you'll thank us later.

8. Golden Triangle

7. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognizable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Is tipping customary in Thailand?

Tipping isn’t customary in Thailand, but feel free to leave restaurants, drivers or service workers a small tip if the service has been particularly good. It’s always appreciated.

What is internet access like in Thailand?

The Internet can be accessed at hotels and internet cafes in large cities and tourist areas but is limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Thailand?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Thailand’s urban areas, but may not be available on some of the islands and in more remote areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Thailand?

Squat toilets are most common in Thailand, although western-style flushable toilets can be found in larger hotels and some tourist areas. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided.

Can I drink the tap water in Thailand?

Drinking tap water isn’t recommended in Thailand. Avoid drinks with ice and make sure to peel fruit before eating it. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Thailand?

Credit cards are usually accepted by hotels, large retailers and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors and family-run restaurants in rural areas. Market stalls and street vendors will not accept credit cards. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Thailand?

ATMs are widely available in larger cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Thailand?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Thailand but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Stroll through Pak Klong Talad market in Bangkok

Pak Klong Talad is one of the world’s most incredible flower markets, with flower species of every shape and color from all over Thailand. Jim Thompson House

Located in Bangkok, the Jim Thompson House is the former home of James Thompson, an American businessman and architect. He dedicated his life to the revival of Thai silk and designed the house in 1958, with six traditional Thai-styled houses to showcase his large art collection of Thai paintings and historical Buddhist statues.

Wat Doi Suthep

Perched at the top of Doi Suthep mountain at an elevation of 3,520 feet, Wat Doi Suthep is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Thailand. We’ll take you up the 309 steps to find glittering shrines and statues, the holy gold plated chedi, and a sweeping view over the city of Chiang Mai.

The most famous salad in Thailand, Som Tam is a fiery dish of shredded green papaya, tomatoes and green beans. The vegetables are mixed with fish sauce, lime juice, palm sugar and a healthy dose of chilli, and you can tailor the dish to your taste for extra sweetness or spiciness.

What to pack for Thailand

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In Thailand the standard voltage is 220 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A, B, C, F and O. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Reef-safe sunscreen & insect repellent

Protect yourself from the harsh Thai sun with SPF 30 or higher and protect the coral reefs with reef-safe sunscreen. You’ll also need to pack plenty of DEET insect repellent.

In Thai culture, it’s required to remove your shoes before entering houses, temples and some shops and restaurants. Bring a comfortable pair of sandals so you can easily slip them off all day.

With plenty of islands ringed with golden shorelines and turquoise waters, you’ll definitely need a swimsuit for snorkelling, diving and blissful beach days in Thailand.

Thai phrasebook

The Thai language is unique to the country, and you’ll gain plenty of smiles and appreciation from the locals if you attempt to learn a few phrases.

Thailand travel reviews

Thailand tour photos from our travellers, recommended tours, the best ways to pay for services in thailand.

Thailand's local currency is the Thai Baht. The best way to carry your money is in debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currencies from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout Thailand and will generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if at all possible in case of loss or problems with one card, you will have a back up. If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 2003, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

It is customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service.

Tour guides / Drivers

$ 1.5 to $ 3.5.

Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person per day depending on the quality and length of the service

G Adventures CEO

$ 20 to $ 25.

The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline $20-25 USD per person, per week can be used.

Packing for Thailand

What you need to bring depends on the trip you have chosen and the countries or regions you are planning to visit. We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible as your are expected to carry your own luggage. As a rule we try not to have to walk more than 15-20 minutes with your bags which is why we recommend keeping the weight of your bags between 10-15kg/22-30lb. Suitcases are not recommended for G Adventures trips! Most travellers carry a backpack or rolling bag of small to medium size (no XXL ones please!) as they need to fit under the beds when travelling on sleeper trains. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water, cameras and other electronics like iPods and mobile phones. If your trip involves overnights in homestays, villages or camping then you usually have the opportunity to rent sleeping bags if need be instead of bringing them with you.

Electricity and power supplies in Thailand

The entire country of Thailand runs on 220-volt currents and uses five types of electrical outlets — type A, B, C, F and O. Type A: mainly used in North and Central America, China and Japan. This socket only works with plug A. Type B: like type A but with an extra prong for grounding. This socket also works with plug A. Type C: also known as the standard "Euro" plug. This socket also works with plug E and plug F. Type F: also known as "Schuko". This socket also works with plug C and plug E. Type O: this type is unique to Thailand but it also works with plug C, plug E and plug F.

Custom Asia Travel Experience

We had a great day in Ninh Binh! The customer service rep (Molly) was very helpful organising a custom tour so we could see the major sights. Our guide, Thu, was very friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We saw Bai Dinh temple, Hoa Lu ancient city, Bich Dong pagoda, and Tam Coc boat tour. We would recommend this company to others!

Trip of a lifetime!

I cannot say enough positives about Custom Asia Travel! We visited Vietnam in December/January 2023 and had an amazing trip with our 3 teens. The itinerary exceeded our expectations! We travelled to Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Nha Trang. We had no issues with any of our transportation around the country - our drivers and guides were always there on time (early, actually), friendly and helpful. The accommodations were excellent and our guides were fantastic (Tanh, Tanh, and Viet - they were awesome!). Every place we stayed put our rooms right next to each other, often adjoining, and the kids’ room always had two twin beds and a cot, while my husband and I had a king bed. This was perfect as our teenagers did not want to share beds, lol! The activities were super fun and appealed to all of us. So many highlights - the kids loved the rice farm tour (riding the water Buffalo elicited the biggest smile we’ve ever seen from our 16 year old!), seeing the caves in Ninh Binh, the cooking class in Hoi An, and Ha Long Bay. I really appreciated that some of our itinerary was focused on less crowded activities - a couple of the temples we saw were practically empty, allowing us to enjoy and experience these beautiful sites on our own. We did a couple of bike rides which were also highlights, such a great way to explore and see the area! Minh was available and responsive while planning the trip and while we were there. I agree with others reviews about whether she ever sleeps! She was able to coordinate our luggage getting dropped off as it did not arrive with us, and contacted one of the hotels about a ring that had been left, and arranged for us to pick it up. She was warm, friendly, knowledgeable, and so helpful. We truly had a relaxing and stress free trip because of the excellent customer service from Minh and our guides. With only having 12 days to visit we were so grateful to be able to enjoy the travel and know that Minh and her team were there if and when needed. I highly recommend using this company, you will not regret it! Now I am dreaming of how quickly we can make it back!! Thank you thank you to Minh and the team, our trip was unforgettable!

Remove your shoes before entering a temple or someone's home. Use your right hand to pass or receive objects, as the left hand is considered impure. Avoid touching people's heads, as it is considered disrespectful. When greeting someone, it is polite to use the Sampeah gesture, which involves placing your hands together in a prayer-like position in front of your chest and slightly bowing your head. It is customary to remove hats and sunglasses when entering a temple or religious site. Public displays of affection are not common in Cambodia and may be seen as inappropriate. Tipping is not common in Cambodia, but it is becoming more prevalent in tourist areas. If you decide to give a tip, a small amount is appreciated. When giving or receiving something, use both hands as a sign of respect. Lastly, respect the tragic history of Cambodia and the impact it still has on many Cambodians. Avoid making insensitive comments about the Khmer Rouge or the country's political situation. For more information on customs and cultural norms in Cambodia, it is always wise to consult a local travel agency like Custom Asia Travel, which can provide additional advice and support.
  • Are there any specific health concerns I should be aware of before traveling to Cambodia? Yes, there are some health concerns that travelers should be aware of before visiting Cambodia. Malaria is present in certain regions of the country, so it's important to take preventive measures such as using mosquito nets and repellents. Dengue, another mosquito-borne disease, is also a risk. Travelers should also be cautious about what they eat and drink to avoid food and waterborne illnesses such as traveler's diarrhea. It is recommended to drink bottled water, avoid ice in beverages, and consume only thoroughly cooked food. Vaccinations against hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and tetanus are also recommended. It is best to consult a healthcare professional or travel medicine clinic before traveling to Cambodia to discuss any specific health concerns and the necessary vaccinations or medications.

Chiang Rai is a great place for those looking to enjoy Thailand’s great outdoors. This mountainous region offers adventurous landscapes - trekking, cycling and rafting are some of the incredible activities you can experience. From here, you can also choose to visit the colourful and authentic hill tribe villages or a glimpse into life in nearby Laos or Myanmar.

When to visit

The best time to visit Thailand is during its dry season. For most parts of the country, this would be between November and March, extending into April and May for some regions. Thailand is characterised by the rainy, hot and cool seasons. The north is less humid and experiences the greatest range of temperatures with cold nights during the cool season. The temperatures are more consistent in southern Thailand but the Andaman coast is hit hardest during the rainy season (October to December).

Leanne and Gilda planned a fantastic trip to Thailand and Cambodia for my family. Everything was well thought out and tailored to us. All the guides, tours, and drivers were amazing and there wasn’t a single hiccup. The accommodations were beautiful and we felt pampered the entire time.

We loved everything about our trip to Japan and Thailand. The hotels, tour guides and restaurant recommendations were all excellent.

I usually do all my travel planning independently but found myself desperately in need of time away, without the time to actually plan the trip. I did some research and settled on Jacada based on their other excellent reviews. I used Jacada to help me plan my first trip to SE Asia (Thailand, Laos and Cambodia for 2.5 weeks), which…

We had an incredible experience planning our honeymoon with Leanne and Gilda from Jacada. They crafted a personalized itinerary that exceeded our expectations, taking into account our desires and budget. Leanne's insight on different islands and cities was spot-on, and the detailed emails, including maps of international airports, made our journey seamless. The constant communication and check-ins added a sense…

Jacada planned our trip of a lifetime to Vietnam and Thailand in January/February 2024 for 3 weeks. From the moment we landed in Hanoi, they prioritized our entry through customs to a no wait line and transferred us to our guide and driver. It was seamless and professional the entire trip. We experienced the culture and people in authentic day…

I enjoyed working with Zicasso’s tour company. They were very responsive to my request and planned the perfect itinerary for my family. All the day tours and the guides were highly experienced and a lot of fun to spend time with. The elephant sanctuary was clearly a highlight, as were both boat tours of the amazing islands off Phuket. All the hotel accommodations and services were top-notch. We especially enjoyed the restaurant recommendations in each area. The trip app was very helpful and we appreciated the daily communication and document sharing of boarding passes. Overall, we truly enjoyed our first visit to Thailand. It is a very beautiful country, but more importantly, we found its people very friendly and welcoming. This was my fifth trip using Zicasso and they have never disappointed me or my grandchildren, who have accompanied me each time. They introduced me to our travel company and fulfilled all our needs and beyond.

My husband and I booked our honeymoon in Thailand with Zicasso's travel agency. We worked with our travel agent to plan it and the itinerary was incredible! I barely had to do anything. He booked all of our activities, hotels, and transfers. Transportation: We went to four locations (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, and Krabi) and each time we traveled internally, a guide would drop us off and pick us up. Truly door-to-door service! We also had a private guide and driver for each of our planned activities. Our domestic travel was so incredibly easy and we were super lucky to have all of them be on time and seamless! Our tour operator monitored all the flights and before our honeymoon, made sure to update a couple whose times had changed to ensure we got to our destinations with enough time. Activities: We wanted our honeymoon to be equal parts adventure and relaxation. We spent the first half of our trip in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We toured temples, did a street food tour, took a day trip to a floating market, spent a day learning to cook with a local family, spent a day with rescue elephants, and visited a gorgeous national park, to name a few things. All were private tours with private guides! A shout-out to our amazing guides in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We then spent intentionally unstructured time at the beaches of Koh Samui and Krabi (I’d recommend Krabi over Koh Samui (I was the one who added Koh Samui to the itinerary, but should have listened to our travel agent!). Krabi was so perfect for a honeymoon. Accommodations: All were five stars and beautiful! We had cute honeymoon welcome gifts everywhere we went. In summary, it was so worth working with our travel team to plan a stress-free honeymoon. We had an incredible time and couldn’t have loved it more!

From the extremely helpful pre-trip consult to the back and forth regarding various possibilities, the proactive recommendations based upon deep experience in the areas, the carefully selected guides and drivers, and handling little wrinkles as they occurred, our travel agent and his team were absolutely tops. We loved each stop and, as a result, have become promoters of visiting such a fascinating and welcoming part of our world.

Although frequent travelers, this was our first trip to Asia. We greatly wanted to visit Thailand, but were uncertain how to proceed in planning our trip. Through Zicasso, we came into contact with our travel agent. We had great conversations with him about our interests, what we were hoping to experience in Thailand, and our travel style. He put together an initial travel itinerary, which we subsequently modified in follow-up conversations. Our agent was great to work with and we felt very involved in the process of setting up our trip. We have now returned from the trip and it was wonderful, or as my wife keeps telling people, magical. The attention to detail was impressive. The accommodations were first-rate. Travel occurred as planned, with air and land travel within Thailand going without a hitch. My wife has food allergies and was very concerned about how she would manage in Thailand. Our agent made sure our hotels and excursion providers were well informed of her dietary restrictions ahead of time and she was able to relax and enjoy herself without worry. As an example, when we went to the breakfast buffet at our hotel in Bangkok, a staff member approached us and went over their buffet, telling my wife which dishes to avoid. The best part of our trip was our guide. He was a wonderful person who took great joy in sharing his vast knowledge of Thailand with us. The excursions we took were enriched by his presence. Our agent was readily available to answer any questions we had as our travels progressed. We felt that his company’s resources were available to us throughout our travels and that he had our backs. I would like to emphasize that we were extremely pleased with the company and are highly recommending them as we recount our trip with friends and family. I would not hesitate to work with them again in planning future travels.

Zicasso's travel partner was so helpful in planning our anniversary trip to Japan. Every hotel selected had a fantastic location and she made it so easy to travel from city to city. We enjoyed all of our private tours, especially the cocktail/mixology tour in Tokyo. It introduced us to so many unique cocktail bars that we would have never found on our own. Similarly, our food tour in Osaka was amazing and we got to try foods we would never have had anywhere else, including stingray! We also greatly appreciated our private day tours of Tokyo and Kyoto. It would have been harder to navigate the city without them and they were perfect for hitting the must-see highlights in each city. We really cannot thank our agent enough for planning such a wonderful trip! The inclusion of portable WiFi and detailed maps was the icing on the cake and made everything run so seamlessly. I would 100% use them again when we return to Japan.

We had a very interesting 18-day trip to Laos and Vietnam in February. We worked closely with our Zicasso tour operator to plan a customized trip that included a number of stops and different experiences. We started in Laos, with the monasteries, waterfall/hiking, cooking classes in Luang Prabang, and outdoor activities in beautiful Vang Vieng (hiking, caving, and kayaking). We spent the next 13 days in Vietnam – chaotic Hanoi; beautiful Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh, with the fantastic limestone karsts; historic Hue, the Imperial City; picturesque Hoi An, with the serene and spectacular resort; ending up in Saigon for a day. We had three knowledgeable guides with different personalities and backgrounds – Laos, northern Vietnam, and central Vietnam. We had interesting and detailed discussions which enhanced our understanding of the history of the region, as well as the US impact on Laos and Vietnam. Although we liked our guides, we realized they were independent contractors and did not really have any input in our day-to-day itinerary (which did have changes from the original). Although most of the changes were fine, we would have liked better communication – letting us know about the changes and options. As a result, we spent more time managing each day's itinerary with our guides to ensure we liked the next day's itinerary. In summary, we truly liked and enjoyed our well-planned trip.

Bangkok as we all know is the capital city of Thailand and also one of Asia’s most cosmopolitan cities. The city of Bangkok is a great tourist attraction. It has something for everyone and if you travel to Bangkok you will definitely find something for yourself even if you didn’t expect it to be, and it will somewhere be worth it. Bangkok has a variety of magnificent and beautiful-looking temples, some of the tastiest food you can eat, and busy markets for shopping fanatics with a sparkling nightlife.

The city also has many visually pleasing delights that soothe your eyes and soul. The city seems loud and noisy with full of chaos but still, it never fails to attract tourists all over the world and that’s why it is often rated as the number one tourist destination. There is so much to discover in the city from skyscrapers included with sky bars to countless temples. Other than that there are things you should do while visiting Bangkok are its street food, boat trips, and shopping and it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for you. The city has so much gone all the time that it is known as the city that never sleeps.

It turns out one day is more than enough to see all the major tourist attractions in Bangkok plus sample some great food and enjoy the nightlife too. Whether you’re passing through on the way to another city or spending 1 day in Bangkok before making your way to the islands, it’s surprisingly easy to enjoy the best of Bangkok in a day. Following are the places which you can visit and enjoy in a day.

1.Grand Palace

Arguably Bangkok’s most impressive attraction, the Grand Palace is a huge complex of Thai temples and historical buildings. Highlights include Wat Phra Kaew, known in English as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and the Chakri Maha Prasat Hall.

Entry to the Grand Palace for non-Thais is 500 baht. There are several ways to access the Grand Palace. If you’re staying along the Riverside, take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Chang (N9) pier, then walk through the riverside market to the Grand Palace.

Across the Chao Phraya from the Grand Palace is Wat Arun — the Temple of Dawn. One of Bangkok’s most picturesque and impressive temples, it’s a great temple to visit after you’ve seen Wat Pho. Take the three baht cross-river ferry from Tha Tien (N8) pier, near Wat Pho.

A popular way to see the Grand Palace, Wat Po, and Wat Arun is on the Walking Temple Tour, where your guide will ensure you take the fastest route between the temples and deal with all admission fees and transport.

3.Amulet Market

In the area around the Grand Palace, you’ll find Bangkok’s largest and most popular market for Buddhist amulets. Most of the amulets are purchased by people in dangerous professions seeking safety and good fortune.

4.Khlong Tours of the Chao Praya River

Bangkok’s busiest and most modern districts are located on the east side of the Chao Phraya River. Board a small teak boat – either a converted rice barge or a longtail boat, as made famous in the James Bond movie The Man With The Golden Gun – and adventure through the city’s eastern districts on historical klongs — canals that were once Bangkok’s primary transportation network.

5.The floating markets

One might feel as though they are entering a different world upon visiting a Thai floating market. Slender canals are crammed with boats selling an abundance of food and goods, while friendly vendors talk amongst themselves in Thai. While some countries in Asia have their own floating markets, none compare to Thailand’s, and the surreal experience is one you cannot miss while visiting the country.

For a half-day tour places that can be visited and enjoyed are- The Chao Fraya river is a beautiful place to start the day. The rivers and canals are the heart of Bangkok, and it`s cross-river ferries are still the main transportation for the locals. The area along the main river of Bangkok (Ko Ratanakosin) used to be the ancient royal district and this is where many of Bangkok`s most famous attractions are located. To experience the real Bangkok we recommend you to take public ferry. Time to head onto the famous and vibrant Chinatown that is located on the opposite side of the river from Wat Arun Temple. So jump back on the ferry that takes you across the river, and jump off at the no. 5 Ratchawong Pier. Bangkok´s Chinatown, called Yaowarat after the main road Th Yaowarat Road that runs through this area, is one of the oldest parts of Bangkok. It represents the first resettlement of Chinese and dates back to 1782. Here you will find action at all hours and surprises at every turn. When the sun sets this is the street food central of Bangkok and where you will find the most delicious and authentic Thai street food, including some Chinese-inspired dishes that are not available anywhere else in Thailand. After some more shopping in these fancy and super big shopping malls, take a detour from modern Bangkok to explore a bit of its history. The Jim Thompson House, which is kind of like a museum, is located close to Siam Square and is just a short walk away from the shopping malls. The story of Jim Thompson is a fascinating one, and quite a mystery too! Jim Thompson, born in America, is the man who made Thai silk famous around the world and one day disappeared. His lovely house and garden is now a museum, and is well worth a visit! A guided tour of the garden and house, as well as a demonstration of how Thai silk is made and Thai dance, is included in the cheap ticket.

Places to visit and enjoy in the evening are listed below:

1.Cabaret Show Tour

A favorite in Bangkok for roughly thirty years, the Calypso Cabaret Show has something for everybody. The performances range from captivating burlesque and traditional Thai dance routines to celebrity impersonations and slapstick comedy. Featuring over seventy professional transgender artists, the show celebrates the spirit of diversity through song, dance, and burlesque. It is one of the best night tours in Bangkok.

2.Theatre Tour

Siam Niramit is a world-class show set in the heart of Bangkok. The performers demonstrate important moments of Bangkok’s 700-year old history, reenact cultural festivals, and reveal ancient customs. The rich history and culture of Bangkok is brought to life by more than 150 performers. The thunderous sound effects, world-class lighting, and elaborate props add depth to the show.

3.Midnight Food Tour By Tuk Tuk

The tuk tuk is an iconic symbol of Bangkok. Some of you may be apprehensive about getting in a tuk tuk at night owing to the pollution and the heat, but according to travelers, that is just a misconception. The city’s pollution levels are bearable and the temperature drops considerably in the evening. Sample delicious street food, like meatballs and grilled sweet banana on a stick, at Klong San market.
