Gondola ride on a canal in Venice

There's a saying that you either love or hate Venice when you visit this romantic northern Italy city. But our guess is if you go when you're feeling butterflies, The City of Water will have them swarming.

Even for the well-versed traveler, Venice presents an entirely new experience, since it is the capital of the Veneto region, comprised of 100 tiny islands. Here, there are very few roads, but many canals, making a gondola ride with your main squeeze a must.

Romantic beach dining in The Maldives

Santorini

As one of the most popular honeymoon destinations on the planet, and one of the most beautiful Greek Islands , Santorini might require a long plane ride and a puddle jumper flight, but trust us, it is worth the journey. Blue-domed houses so white, they sparkle are a treat to behold, while the twinkling azure Aegean Sea beckons travelers in the distance.

This picturesque sea is the main reason many newlyweds choose Santorini. In addition to its ability to cool off even the most overheated of travelers, this watery haven offers captivatingly pink, orange, and golden sunsets best viewed from the town of Oia . It's still utterly romantic, but you won't be the only ones enjoying Mother Nature's fantastic nightly display — Oia gets packed at sunset, no matter the season.

Many of Santorini's boutiques, restaurants, and resorts are built into the jagged cliff sides, giving couples the chance to book a unique private escape for their trip. While walking through town, don't be surprised if you end up on someone's roof.

In addition to walking through narrow — and often steep — streets to catch a glimpse of the iconic white skyline, it's also recommended to rent a car for your trip. Though you can hire a taxi service, many duos prefer the independence of scaling the island on their own, giving them the ability to stop for a photo — or a romp — when the mood strikes.

If you're feeling more adventurous, rent a scooter. There's little more romantic than holding on to your partner as you wind your way along the scenic roadways.

Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos

Boasting some of the most beautiful hued water in the Caribbean and one of the world's most gorgeous beaches , Turks and Caicos is a dreamy, romantic destination for couples seeking a tropical getaway that's easily accessible from North America. It's also a perfect choice if you want to see a part of the Caribbean still void of mega all-inclusive resorts.

The vibe here is all about the natural beauty and tranquility. From calm, clear water to the clarity of the sand and colorful sunsets, this is an island getaway that encourages long romantic walks on the beach followed by leisurely dinners at excellent restaurants. There is also fabulous snorkeling, diving, and bone fishing in the glassy sea.

Providenciales is the main island that tourists visit . It is one of eight inhabited islands in the Turks and Caicos string of 40 islands. Here you'll find stunning Grace Bay Beach, which is consistently ranked one of the world's best. Running for 12-miles, it has great snorkeling just offshore in a thriving reef.

You'll also find many of the most romantic resorts here. Unlike the Dominican Republic, Jamaica or The Bahamas, Turks and Caicos doesn't cater to mass market resorts. Instead, you'll find truly luxe accommodation in smaller properties that have more intimate vibes, which is another perk if you just want to spend time with your partner.

A romantic stroll on a beautiful beach in the Seychelles

It's impossible to fall out of love while vacationing in the Seychelles. One of the most romantic destinations on the planet, this 115-island archipelago sits serenely in the Indian Ocean, about 1,800 kilometers off Africa's east coast.

The region's magnificent scenery caresses its visitors, intriguing them to snorkel in the crystal-clear water, trek through the jungle, and climb over dramatic volcanic boulders.

Silhouette Island, Seychelles

Mahé is the largest Seychellois island, offering a slew of hotel, restaurant, and shopping choices at all price points, but it's the small, private isles that really bring on the romance.

In addition to pristine beaches and water so warm and clean, you could swim and snorkel in it all day, many of these lavish islands are home to their own upscale resorts.

The Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa , for instance, occupies a large chunk of the tranquil Silhouette Island, meaning guests have private access to everything from volcanic beaches to rainforest pathways, and jungle treks. The only other inhabitants on this isle live in a tiny, historic fishing village located near the main dock.

Walking on Kaanapali Beach, Maui

If you're American, there's no passport required for this romantic hub, but you might feel as if you went to another country when you catch a glimpse of the truly remarkable beauty of Hawaii.

While there are dozens of islands to navigate — from Oahu to Kauai — if you want to wear those head-over-heels rose-colored glasses, set your sights on Maui. In addition to some dreamy luxury resorts, the varied landscape of this Hawaiian island sets it apart from its neighbors. The beaches are so glorious, you won't want to leave.

Couples can drive along the picturesque Hana Highway and explore the Haleakala National Park , including the volcano it's named after. And since most amorous vacations require a beach day, there are 30 miles of sand to set up shop on.

Make sure you save time to fall asleep under the dazzling stars and constellations that bring light to the midnight sky.

A cheetah in Masai Mara

If your idea of a romantic getaway involves watching cheetahs stalk prey across the savannah, snapping photos of baby lions playing (they look like puppies, FYI), or witnessing an elephant family drinking from a watering hole as the sun sinks low on the horizon and turns the sky into an explosion of colors, then you need to book a trip to Kenya's Masai Mara.

The country's premier safari destination is uber romantic. Home to all of Africa's most famous animals, it is also where the Great Migration takes place each year starting in July or August . There are numerous safari lodges for all budgets of travelers. But for a special trip, you'll want to stay at Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp.

The place looks like you stepped back in time to the 1920s. Everything from the birdcage chandeliers and gramophones in the main tent where dinner is served to the al fresco bubble baths set up outside your luxurious canvas sleeping abodes upon request a replica of what safari camps looked like a century ago – minus the fact that you no longer hunt the animals, but instead photograph them. It is about as yesteryear romantic as you can get.

Positano on the Amalfi Coast

Imagine this, if you will: canoodling with your number one and snapping a sunset selfie as you overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea from your cliffside villa in Italy. If that sounds just about perfect, the Amalfi Coast is an ideal spot for your next holiday-for-two.

While this area of the Campania region is only 50 kilometers long, it lures many tourists thanks to its captivating beauty, fresh seafood, and photo-worthy panoramic views.

You and your partner can navigate narrow roads and alleys; stop by fishing villages; tour clifftop villas; or spend the day on the gorgeous beach , soaking up the vitamin D, and the warmth of the Italians.

Capri

Multiple stunning villages, or "pearls of the Amalfi," as they are sometimes called, are scattered along the rugged Amalfi Coast. Positano is arguably the most beautiful, while Amalfi is considered the main heart of this breathtaking region. From here, grab a ferry to Capri to up your romance factor even higher.

Other must-sees include Ravello , Atrani , Maiori , and Vietri sul Mare .

Wildflowers along the road in Big Sur

With wild ocean views from craggy cliffs, fine dining, small luxury resorts, and excellent hiking, California's Big Sur is one of the state's most romantic destinations. It's the perfect spot for a destination wedding, an elopement, honeymoon, or just a weekend getaway with the person you love.

Located about three hours south of San Francisco and five hours north of Los Angeles along one of California's most rugged and beautiful stretches of coastline, Big Sur is also a perfect romantic destination for couples seeking some digital detox time. Cell phone reception is spotty here and some of the hotels don't have TVs in the rooms.

But that is okay, because this is a destination you visit to commune with nature and your loved one. Take a walk through the woods or along the beach and just soak up the magic of this special place. When it comes to lodging, one of the most romantic options is the Post Ranch Inn .

The luxury property isn't cheap, but for a special occasion, worth the price. The service is impeccable as is the cliffside location. Take a dip in one of the two infinity pools as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean. They are heated to Jacuzzi-like temperatures.

Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, Japan

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is unmissable, especially if you planned to take romantic photos on your couples' vacation. View of Quebec City

Ahh, Québec City, how we love you. Canada's city de l'amour, this French-speaking ville is about as romantic as you can get outside of Europe. It's overlooked by the iconic Fairmont Le Château Frontenac , which stands stoically atop a steep cliff in Upper Town , surrounded by stone walls. You'll be forgiven for thinking you're in France.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this charming spot is one of Canada's best cities , and one of its most romantic, for good reason. Lower Town (a.k.a. Basse-Ville) is chock-full of dreamy narrow streets, eclectic shops, quaint restaurants, and a lane named Rue du Cul de Sac that's covered by blue and white umbrellas.

Québec City's setting on the banks of the St. Lawrence River only helps increase the quixotic feel. Palace Royale is the central tourist area, which perfectly blends the town's history and contemporary features. This is where you'll find outdoor patios on which to enjoy a meal al fresco while surrounded by enchanting buildings that date to the 17 th and 18 th centuries.

The Neptune Fountain at Cerro Santa Lucía in Santiago

Part of the beauty of this South American destination is found in its location: a large metropolis, encompassed by the breathtaking view of the Andes Mountains and the nearby Chilean coast. .

Though you can probably tour most of Santiago itself in two days — from the Plaza de Armas to the Metropolitan Cathedral — the appeal for many romance-seeking duos is in renting a car and hitting the road. You can drive toward the sea, get lost in the countryside, or depending on the season, even go skiing.

For those who don't mind a bit of country hopping, Santiago is a popular place to start from and drive through the Andes mountains to Mendoza, Argentina , where you'll definitely need to stop a few times to admire the view.

Laurel Lake in The Berkshires

Many couples look forward to their first weekend away, where they can test their skills of navigating life together — even if it is just agreeing on directions or a place to eat. For a long weekend adventure that's accessible to the East Coast, The Berkshires is an ideal romantic destination, and one of the best weekend getaways in Massachusetts .

While all seasons offer a variety of perks, most partners choose Autumn or early winter for their escape. During this time of year in the mountains of Western Massachusetts, leaves are hosting their annual color show, dazzling with hues of vibrant red, warm oranges, and unbelievable yellows.

You can rent a car and admire nature, stay at a bed-and-breakfast that provides homemade waffles (and ahem, maple syrup!) for breakfast, and end your nights canoodling by the fire.

If you happen to visit during summer, you can also enjoy freshly prepared farm (or sea)-to-table dishes or go for a swim or canoe on the many lakes that speckle the area.

The most romantic places in the world

By Laura Chubb , Francesca Syz and Lauren Burvill

Paris France

Romance can be many things to many people, but few can resist the allure of a romantic escape for two. While there's no wrong answer when it comes to romance, some of the world's most beautiful spots lend themselves to catering to couples, especially when it comes to hotels. So whether you're planning a honeymoon , an anniversary or a weekend getaway just because, these are our top picks for the most romantic places in the world, plus where to stay in each.

Le Sirenuse Positano

1. Amalfi Coast, Italy

From the naturally blessed shores of  Lake Como  right down to Sicily's heart-melting capital  Palermo , you could throw a dart anywhere on a map of Italy and land on one of the most romantic places in the world. It's spurred on much debate within the team but if we  had  to choose just one fuzzy-eyed spot in Italy, it's the Amalfi Coast. We're not alone in our admiration either. The Greeks, so taken by the area’s natural beauty, attributed it to a nymph who captivated the heart of Hercules. The  towns of Amalfi Coast  only add to the charm, with brightly hued houses dotted along the rocking hillside, each offering a unique outlook along with shops, restaurants and swimming spots that are up for discovery.

Where to stay: Pretty much all of the  best Amalfi Coast hotels  fit the bill for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. In terms of location, Borgo Santandrea in Amalfi is a winner, perched high in the cliffs and built into the rock face overlooking the sea. All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and sea views. Palazzo Avino in Ravello has equally knock-out views, especially from the top-floor Infinito Suite with its large living room and a bathroom with a hot-tub-style bath. For a stay that pulls out all of the stops, it doesn't get much better than  Le Sirenuse , a Pompeii-style red and white building in the centre of Positano. The restaurant here, La Sponda, with its 400 candles and bougainvillaea-clad dining room, is quite possibly the most romantic in the region.

Gili Lankanfushi Maldives

2. The Maldives

For going off-grid

Confetti bursts of colourful tropical fish in gin-clear lagoons, freshly prepared breakfast spreads delivered to your private pool via floating trays, sipping a morning coffee while a manta ray soars underneath your feet – it's the stuff of honeymoon dreams and the much lauded reality of a trip to the Maldives. While there are plenty of family-friendly hotels in the Maldives , few places can compare to the archipelago country's innate sense for romance and adults-only stays. Boutique stays and lo-fi boltholes area rarity here, instead the best hotels in the Maldives are world class, spread out on their own private islands, nestling state-of-the-art spas and multiple restaurants amongst lush jungles, pristine beaches and house reefs.

Where to stay: Romance comes naturally to pretty much all of the hotels in this region. Some standout spots include Vakkaru , a lush coconut tree-covered island resort with a jungle cinema that guests can reserve for a private dinner and movie under the stars. For the latest shiny stay, Six Senses recently set up its second hotel in the Maldives, offering up a tip-top spa with an impressive couples' suite. In terms of aesthetics, it's hard to beat Gili Lankanfushi Maldives , where all villas are stilted over one of the most eye-wateringly beautiful lagoons in the country, keeping the island wild and the beaches on full dazzling display.

Executive suite with cave plunge pool at Andronis Boutique Hotel Santorini

3. Santorini, Greece

Santorini is the knockout Greek island – the island with the best views, the best sunsets, and the best hotels. Combine all of these elements and it's a recipe for one of the most romantic spots in the world. Days are best spent out on the water, sailing to nearby islands and hopping between the best beaches in Santorini . But then again you could easily stay at one of the best hotels in Santorini – where private infinity pools boast the best seats in the house – and never want to leave.

Where to stay: For one of the best views on the island, check in to cliffside Nobu Hotel , where the 25 luxe rooms and suites come with uninterrupted views of the Aegean. Similarly Andronis Boutique Hotel offers up a series of traditional cave-style suites and villas with private infinity pools, cave pools and hot tubs, set right in the heart of Oía. For a private stay, this traditional cave house in Oia is one of top trending homes on Airbnb . The view is postcard worthy, made all the more romantic when admired from the semi-cave whirlpool and multi-level private terrace.

Montmartre in Paris France

4. Paris, France

For a weekend break

When it comes to a romantic city break it's hard not to have all eyes on Paris . The clichés can't help but ring true when exploring the city, from serene strolls along the Seine to a glass of wine with a view at one of the best rooftop bars in Paris . And then there are the hotels in Paris , amongst some of the best in the world, sublime in their views , old-world charm and effortlessly chic interiors.

Where to stay: Newcomer Le Grand Mazarin , in the enduringly romantic Le Marais, is one of the prettiest places to stay – all velvet pouffes, clashing prints and tapestry canopies over the beds. Nearby, Maison Proust has only 23 Belle Époque-style suites and a swoon-worthy Moroccan-style heated pool. To make a grand romantic gesture, reserve a room at St James Hotel in 16th arrondissement, Paris’s only officially designated château-hotel. This 11th arrondissement Airbnb also makes for a romantic stay, complete with fluffy bathrobes, sleek decor and a leafy private terrace.

For a winter sun escape WithnbspMoroccos yearround bonewarming weather just a threehour flight fromnbspLondon Marrakech...

5. Marrakech, Morocco

For a winter sun escape

With  Morocco ’s year-round, bone-warming weather just a three-hour flight from  London , Marrakech makes for a sunny romantic escape when all is gloomy at home. And while the buzz of the Old City's winding souks and the sight of cobras dancing out of baskets make for a fun adventure, there are other sides to  Marrakech  away from the noise of Jemaa el-Fna square and the tourists at the Jardin Majorelle. For a slower and more private pace, swap the medina for the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, followed by a drink at Grand Café de la Poste, one of the most beautiful restaurants in the city.

Where to stay: When it comes to places to stay, the list of best hotels in Marrakech has grown rampantly in recent years, but our favourite – and by far the most romantic – is still La Mamounia . Set in 20 acres of gardens just inside the walls of the Old City, the hotel has retained the feel of a palace but added a contemporary theatricality to its accommodation (which now includes three three-bedroom riads with their own pools), plus four restaurants, five bars and a Salon de Thé. For a pretty riad stay , reserve a traditional room at Riad Sadaka and don't forget your swimming costume – the courtyard pool is simply stunning.

6. Bali, Indonesia

The spiritual getaway

Bali is beloved as the land of a million islands, misty, mythical mountainous stacks, and chilled-out beach clubs . It's also the land of some of the most beautiful places to stay in the world. No matter how many five-star hotels open up though, Bali is no homogenized island resort. It's a magical, spiritual place, which manages to retain its authenticity and culture, as well as its unspoilt beaches and green tropical landscapes. All essential ingredients for a romantic stay.

Where to stay: The list of fabulous Bali hotels is always expanding, but for something more down to earth, look to Sandat Glamping tents , set among bright-green rice fields close to Ubud. Cuddling under canvas is less lumpy groundsheets and roof leaks, more canopy beds and private decks. Newcomer Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape , is a “no walls, no doors” resort with just 16 villas as well as a two-story central pavilion from which a dreamy, lounger-lined infinity pool protrudes into the valley.

7. Tulum, Mexico

For bohemian chic

The golden beaches of Mexico have long been a draw for couples, but one such spot is increasingly becoming the go-to for well-heeled couples seeking bohemian barefoot luxury. Just south of Cancun on the Yucatán Peninsula lies Tulum , the promised land of designer yoga, spiritual jungle journeys and ancient-temple-fringed sands. Plus some of the best hotels in Mexico .

Where to stay: Casa Malca is a former hacienda of Pablo Escobar’s, and now a boutique hotel highly curated by socialite art dealer Lio Malca. Down a dirt path and away from the scrums of man-buns and juiced-up goddesses, here beach suites face a quiet stretch of powder-white sand; all windows point to the Caribbean . The hotel itself is like one giant immersive art exhibition; the entrance has a huge door carved out of tree trunks, framed by curtains stitched from vintage wedding gowns, between which dangle two swings made of antique furniture. As Lio says, it’s about ‘connecting with yourself and the wild’ as well as ‘luxury and art’.

8. Big Sur, California

For the outdoorsy

Nature-lovers can’t help but fall for Big Sur , a wild and storied stretch of California’s central coast. Its bewitching blend of towering redwood forest, muscular green mountains and crashing ocean views has drawn everyone from bohemian writers (Henry Miller) to Hollywood heavyweights (Steve McQueen), seeking isolation in its eucalyptus-scented heart. Is there anything more seductive than hiking hand-in-hand to remote, wooded waterfalls or discovering your own dramatic, deserted beach ?

Where to stay: Look to Alila Ventana , which sprawls across a Big Sur mountain meadow and where suites have a rustic-luxe, cabin-esque vibe. When you’ve finished gazing over the Pacific from your balcony hammock (roomy enough for two), try a couple’s treatment in a forest-facing spa cabana, plunge into the open-air Japanese baths, or take a dip in the clothing-optional communal pool.

9. Seychelles

For island indulgence

The world ‘oohs’ and 'aahs' about the Maldives but smart travellers know the Seychelles warrants just as much fanfare. Thanks to the islands' remoteness – 1,600km off the east coast of Africa – they have never been cheap to visit, or, for that matter, on any cruise-ship itineraries. And there in lies the appeal.

Where to stay: Only the best of the best can set up a hotel in the Seychelles . One such address is the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles , a remote hillside retreat overlooking the bay of Petite Anse on the south-west coast of Mahé. The 67 stilted villas and suites feel like tree houses, peeping out from the jungle canopy of coconut, mango, jackfruit and cinnamon trees. All the obligatory features of the luxury 'Robinson Crusoe' experience are in place – infinity-edged plunge pools, open-air showers, glass-walled bathrooms and expansive outdoor living areas – but taken to another level. At Six Senses Zil Pasyon , the villas are also more akin to super-smart, minimalist tree-houses, secluded amid rocks and pristine forest.

10. New York

It may be a busy city, full of comings and goings and beeping traffic jams, but  New York  is no stranger to magical moments of romance. It usually hits the city when the first autumn leaves start to fall, blanketing the city in shades of auburn and ruby, crescendoing up until Christmas when leaves are swapped for twinkling lights. During this time one of the most romantic things to do in New York is to just take a walk, around Central Park, through Greenwich Village, along The High Line.

Where to stay: To lean into the romance of it all, play up to the old New York charms with a stay on the Upper East Side. There's  The Lowell  (pictured) on ritzy East 63rd Street, where bedrooms are the last word in elegance, with polished mahogany floors, Persian rugs and good, hand-made furniture. For pure relaxation amongst the chaos, check into the Aman in midtown, where the sprawling, three-floor spa and wellness centre has a 65-foot pool, plus not one but two spa houses – one centred around an Eastern European banya, the other a Moroccan hammam.

11. Ibiza, Spain

For island chic

As insiders will tell you, there's a lot more to Ibiza than meets the eye. Go off the beaten track even a fraction and you will discover a world of sleepy hill villages, wild forests, rambling orchards and crumbling farm houses. Time your visit to spring and a further surprise awaits: almond trees in full bloom, covering great swathes of the interior, with entire valleys exploding into glorious white and pink blossom. All this is complemented by an appealing combination of warm days and chilly nights.

Where to stay: Front-row seats for this extraordinary natural show are available at Cas Gasi , a 12-room property that spills down a hillside smothered in almond, fig and carob trees. Since opening in 1998, Cas Gasi has become known as one of the best hotels in Ibiza , particularly with high-profile guests who love its secluded location and low-key luxury. OKU Ibiza also has a privileged location that gives you access to the most beautiful beach spots on the island, along with wabi sabi–inspired design, two serene swimming pools, regular yoga sessions and fusion cuisine.

For romance by rail

There is something irresistibly romantic about luxury train travel . Add India to the mix and you've got an experience guaranteed to dazzle. In the heyday of the maharajas it was not unusual for royalty to travel with their furniture – four-poster beds, thrones, you name it. This is certainly the look the new Maharajas' Express is going for. One of the only luxury trains offering itineraries that cross India's state borders, 'Royal India' is a seven-day epic journey from Delhi to Mumbai , taking in Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur, Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur ( pictured above ) and Vadodara along the way.

Among the highlights is a decadent Champagne lunch on a hillock overlooking the Taj Mahal, a tiger-spotting jeep safari in Ranthambore National Park and elephant polo matches in Jaipur culminating in a Champagne dinner. Life on board is all about comfort. All the cabins and suites are wonderfully regal with huge windows, comfortable beds, LCD TV's and DVD players; but if your feeling particularly flush, book the two-bedroom Presidential Suite, which occupies an entire carriage and has a living room big enough for several comfortable sofas and a dining table. (The junior suite is also surprisingly roomy and much more reasonably priced.) Other treats include an observation carriage with its own bar, games table and club armchairs, and two fine-dining restaurants.

13. Antigua, Caribbean

The spa retreat

Accessed only by boat, the secluded, car-free private-island hideaway of Jumby Bay ( pictured above ), two miles off the coast of Antigua , offers the quintessential Caribbean experience. The standout for romance is the spa , set close to the beach and open to the elements, with five treatment rooms that open onto private terraces. The signature treatments use ingredients taken straight from the garden; one of the highlights is a treatment that involves lying in a soft, handmade hammock while a therapist focuses on pressure points in your head, back, hands and feet to release tension. You can then amble over to your thatched bohio (hut) on the beach, or to one of the many hammocks strung up between the palm trees. The resort is good for creative little extras: to help you enjoy the astonishing night sky, staff will pack a Champagne picnic dinner and send you off to star-gaze on Pasture Beach; there are also cookery classes for men, led by head chef Paolo Lovari, so while their partners indulge in spa treatments (not to generalise), they can learn how to make everything from ceviche to Caribbean lobster bisque.

Venice Italy

14. Venice, Italy

For a hit to all the senses

In any line-up of the world’s most romantic cities, Venice has long been blazing a trail. This jewel-box city has an extraordinary ability to seduce every one of its visitors – whether it’s via the haunting cry of a gondolier bouncing off the city’s ancient stone walls; the awe and wonder of sighting a Caravaggio in a backstreet church, or the first sip of a perfectly sweet Bellini in a tiny cicchetti bar stumbled upon by chance. Skip the summer, when oppressive crowds steal much of Venice ’s romance and come in winter instead – the city becomes intoxicatingly quiet, and you’ll get most of the big-ticket sites all to yourself. To dial up the romance, whoosh in on the Venice-Simplon Orient Express : it’s hands-down the most lavish train journey in the world, and guaranteed to whisk you straight back to the golden age of travel.

Where to stay: If you’ve got deep pockets, you can’t beat a stay at  Aman Venice  – the gilded ballrooms, Murano chandeliers and priceless frescoes were good enough for the Clooney’s wedding night. But if you want to flee the paparazzi, float across the lagoon to  Belmond Hotel Cipriani , a little pocket of peace with romantic rose and hydrangea-filled gardens and an enormous pool with views across to St Mark’s Square. Slightly further afield but no less magical,  Casa Burano offers a more laidback, affordable stay, squirrelled away in a string of candy-coloured fishermen’s houses on film-set pretty Burano. The island can get busy at times, but once the day-trippers vanish, there’s no better place to catch one of Venice’s famous fuchsia-pink sunsets.

Buenos Aires Argentina

15. Buenos Aires, Argentina

For flinging on your dancing shoes

Buenos Aires is often touted as South America’s answer to Paris. Yet there’s far more to the sultry Argentinean capital than it’s intoxicating collision of European and Latin American cultures. This enduringly sexy city is an endless love affair of tango, sizzling asado and big, full-bodied wines – and most definitely a place to get dressed up and stay out late. A crop of exciting young chefs is revolutionising the city’s thrillingly unpretentious food scene, and buzzy rooftop cocktail bars are slowly taking over the city. And of course, there’s no better way to get under Buenos Aires’ skin than by learning the art of the world’s most passionate dance – even better if it’s done at a traditional, dimly-lit  milonga .

Where to stay: Palacio Duhau dominates Buenos Aires’ hotel scene – inside, it’s a feast of glittering chandeliers and marble floors, while the candlelit terrace at restaurant Los Salones del Piano Nobile is an unbeatable date night spot. For a more authentic experience in the heart of trendy foodie neighbourhood Palermo,  Home is a hipsters’ hangout with a tiny pool flanked by blousy jacaranda trees and the smell of jasmine lingering in the air. The delightful staff are the hotel’s biggest asset – miraculously appearing exactly when you need them, but utterly tuned in to knowing when you just want to be left alone with your significant other.

Iceland

16. Iceland

For adventurous spirit

It's hard not to fall for Iceland’s awe-inspiring primal landscapes. The country delivers a hit of romance and adventure in equal measure, and in winter – when short days shout out for cosy nights snuggled by the fire, and there’s a decent chance of spotting the elusive Northern Lights dance across the eerily dark skies – there’s no better time to visit this Nordic superstar. To take it all in, hire a car and hit the 828-mile Ring Road route – wending its way along the country’s entire coastal region, it’s one of the world’s most romantic road trips, swishing past the glaciers, geysers and black sand beaches Iceland is so famous for.

Where to stay: There are plenty of cute cabins to book into along the way: we particularly like the look of  this one , touching distance from Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking waterfalls. To really hole up and hide away, book into  Deplar Farm : deep in the ravishingly remote, bleak but beautiful Tröllaskagi Peninsula, this is one of Europe’s most isolated lodges – and a stay here truly is a once-in-a-lifetime treat. In Reykjavik, the Edition has warm and inviting rooms, with Italian furnishings made from ash wood and floor-to-ceiling windows that either frame the fjord and Mt. Esja or views of downtown.

For adventurous couples Forget for a moment that the Whitsundays largest inhabited island is positioned right beside...

17. Hamilton Island, Australia

For adventurous couples

Forget for a moment that the Whitsundays’ largest inhabited island is positioned right beside Heart Reef (exactly as it sounds: a perfectly heart-shaped coral reef). Because Hamilton Island isn’t for your typical doe-eyed duo – more for those possessing an affinity with the Australian fixation for flinging yourself into adrenalin-pumping stuff. The immaculate waters of the Great Barrier Reef offer world-class dive sites to discover together, while the island’s off-road trails provide a white-knuckle rush deep into the bush.

Where to stay: After a thrilling helicopter ride over this insanely Eden-esque landscape, daredevils can decompress at Qualia , a smart property on its own peninsula. It has 60 secluded one-bedroom, glass-walled pavilions, with private sundecks for gazing over the water – some with their own infinity-edged pool.

The offgrid escape Want to run away together No one will find you at The Brando an allvilla superexclusive hideaway on...

18. French Polynesia

The off-grid escape

Want to run away together? No one will find you at The Brando , an all-villa, super-exclusive hideaway on a private South Pacific island (30 miles north of Tahiti, but accessible only by six-seater plane). Marlon Brando bought Tetiaroa atoll in 1967 and, decades later, set about creating this sustainable, utopian spot, where nature alone provides both decoration and diversion. Smart, thatched dwellings tucked among coconut palms each have their own strip of sand, infinity pool and outdoor tub. The pristine lagoon and blindingly white beach are yours – all yours! – to explore. A hefty all-inclusive rate encompasses daily spa treatments, Champagne, food, excursions and more. (Be sure to make eyes at each other over French chef Guy Martin’s Michelin-grade feasts.) With only 35 villas on the entire island, intimacy comes guaranteed.

Provence France

19. Provence, France

For old-school romance

We’ve got the likes of Cezanne, Renoir and Van Gogh to thank for parcelling up the pure timeless romance of Provence. A post-impressionist haze of higgledy-piggledy medieval hamlets, rolling olive groves and sunflowers lined up in serried ranks, Provence is the perfect setting for giddy sun-baked afternoons sipping rosé under the shade of a cypress tree, pedalling through lavender fields or hopping between vineyards.

Where to stay: There’s no shortage of romantic hotels to live out your Provençal fantasy in.  Crillon Le Brave’s  ramble of wisteria-tangled honey-stone buildings dominates an entire hilltop village; the best suites resemble private pieds-à-terre, with side-by-side rolltop baths and all-consuming views over the muted pastoral landscape. A little further south,  Chateau Saint Martin  is an ideal base for art lovers keen to explore gallery-laced St-Paul-de-Vence, brimming with pétanque-playing locals and home to the legendary family-run restaurant La Colombe d’Or. Back at the hotel, there’s a knockout spa (treatments can be taken in the rose garden on sunny days), and a Michelin-starred restaurant with neatly framed views of the glittering Cote d’Azur. Up here in the hills, you’re in proper fairy-tale Provence – and it’s the absolute antithesis to its see-and-be-seen coastal neighbour.

For city romance From the weeping willows and paper lanterns of the historic Gion district to serene manicured gardens...

20. Kyoto, Japan

For city romance

From the weeping willows and paper lanterns of the historic Gion district to serene, manicured gardens and tinkling temple bells, Kyoto is a completely charming urban retreat. The antithesis of frenetic, futuristic Tokyo, it’s an immersion into the romance of a bygone Japan. And that romance really ramps up when you take a boat ride along the Oi River, where city streets are slowly transposed with misty, wooded hills.

Where to stay: At Hoshinoya , a singularly elegant ryokan group. Though the newer Tokyo version recently won a place in our Hot List, it’s at the Kyoto outpost that you’ll find the distinctive grace and tranquillity of Japan distilled. Moss-covered paths curve around sculpted maples and cedars; guest pavilions are exactingly designed, with sliding paper screens opening onto peaceful forest views. Better yet, bathrooms have deep, cypress tubs, with seasonal herbs provided to infuse your soak.

Botswana

21. Botswana, Africa

For getting up-close with nature

To see Africa at its beguiling best, head to Botswana. The government here has put sustainability at its heart, shunning a revolving door tourism model in favour of low-volume, high-value stays. It’s a brilliant ploy to prevent the country’s precious national parks from becoming overrun, and in turn, Botswana has become one of the most exclusive spots for a safari – perhaps best known for epic wildlife-spotting opportunities and plum stays in some of Africa’s finest and most intimate lodges. Sure, you might not tick off all of the Big Five while you’re here, but instead of sitting in a bottleneck of 4x4s, you can cruise silently through the Okavango Delta’s network of waterways in a dugout canoe, or quadbike across the arid wilderness of the Makgadikgadi salt pans. There’s something utterly hallucinatory about the silence and seclusion; serene hot air balloon rides stand in for gas-guzzling helicopter flights, while nights in billowing white tents are paired with G&Ts around firepits and sleepouts with your lover under the starry skies.

Where to stay: A little oasis in the middle of the Kalahari Desert,  Jack’s Camp  is one of Botswana’s smartest places to stay, and the camp’s mahogany furniture and four-poster beds smack of old-world glamour. If you prefer something a little more modern,  Xigera Lodge  is an ultra-sustainable, off-grid choice – and it's filled to the brim with specially-commissioned works from exciting young African artists. Most importantly, it’s so vast you’d never know you weren’t the only guests. If you’re seeking a bucket-list honeymoon, this is it.

Romance is in the eye of the beholder. For travelers, passion for a place can be the greatest love affair. A palm-lined coast in the south of France . The magic of a medieval city at sunset in Belgium . Swimming in a cenote in Mexico ’s Yucatán Peninsula.

It’s easy to grow accustomed to the emotional allure of travel—the giddy sense of possibility that comes when your plane lands, the serenity and gratitude you feel taking in new surroundings, and the soaring feeling of experiencing something you’ve long been anticipating.

The 11 most romantic destinations in the world

Aerial drone view of couple in love on board of luxury yacht anchored in tropical paradise bay with emerald clear water

Just as people are drawn to wildly unique destinations all around the world, romance is not one-size-fits-all.

Sparks fly for different reasons, and there are elements of a vacation that feel almost universally special for partners to enjoy together.

Perhaps the beauty of the best honeymoons , engagement trips, and anniversary extravaganzas is experiencing somewhere new hand in hand.

Whether it's a confection of technicolor facades lining cobblestone streets, pagodas and temples rising above lush forests, or a desert studded with rare wildlife, many destinations are ideal for romantic exploits. It doesn't hurt when there's bubbly and mind-blowing food involved, too.

Here are 11 destinations that speak to a variety of couples and offer that exciting sense of discovery imbued with romance.

Bali, Indonesia

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

So much of Southeast Asia is seductive, if only for having so many distinct environments that feel so otherworldly and far removed from home.

Indonesia's jewel of an island, Bali, exemplifies that. However, there's a multitude of additional reasons this mystical paradise (and many other destinations in the region) dependably delivers magic to those who visit.

There are golden and black sand beaches, Jurassic jungles, monkey-laden Hindu temples, volcanoes, delicious cuisine, a remarkable restaurant scene and thousands of spas. There's also a myriad of active pursuits for every type of traveler — surfing, cycling, hiking, cooking and snorkeling.

Bali's resorts are famously luxurious. Many offer standalone villas with private pools that provide plenty of privacy to couples who savor the region's signature indoor-outdoor style of accommodation.

One of the best things about the island is the possibility of choosing your own adventure, so to speak. There are hot neighborhoods that feel more Western and touristed — Canggu and Seminyak, for example. Others, such as Ubud, are also very popular yet sprinkle doses of Balinese culture, too. Sanur is quiet and peaceful, Uluwatu is heaven for wellness junkies, Nusa Dua is a resort haven, and areas like Manggis are a lovely blend of nature and authenticity.

Where to stay

On the southern coast near Uluwatu, Bulgari Resort Bali is accessed via a funicular to a private beach club on one of the most pristine ribbons of coastline on the island. There's plenty that seduces, including fine jewelry (and jewel-like chocolates, made in-house), deluxe pool villas with ocean views, and the Italian-meets-Bali prix fixe dinner at Il Ristorante — Luca Fantin. Rates start from $1,350 per night.

One of the only adults-only resorts on the island is also one of its newest and most exhilarating. Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape , blends villas with large pools and no walls — just breezy curtains for privacy from the rainforest. It also boasts an exquisite zero-waste, plant-focused restaurant and bar, a waterfall for thrilling dips, and an open-air spa for dreamy treatments. Rates start from $1,550 per night.

It's a classic for a reason. Paris, aka the City of Light, is also commonly referred to as the City of Love.

The very energy of the French capital is like a vintage romance — you can almost imagine yourself appearing in black and white, taking in iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe.

Lovers for decades have put their own lock on the Wall of Love and strolled arm in arm through the decadent grounds of the Palace of Versailles and Louvre Museum.

Beyond the landmarks that give Paris its charm, the city's dining scene is simply stupendous, with enough dimly lit, tucked-away gems for sharing French cuisine across a tiny table as there are famed eateries at which to pair plates with wine from some of the most beloved regions in France. A starlit walk hits differently when it's along the glittering Seine.

In the Left Bank's artsy Latin Quarter, near Notre Dame Cathedral and Luxembourg Garden, Hotel Dame des Arts is a cinematic boutique-style hotel with a to-die-for rooftop, Mexican fusion restaurant and spa treatment room. Rates start from $367 per night.

With generously sized rooms, an impressive five Michelin stars and gorgeous art deco architecture, the 1928 Four Seasons Hotel George V, steps from the Champs-Elysees, feels like a beautiful trip back in time — and a splurge. Rates start from $1,834 per night.

Big Sur, California

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

When it comes to epic coastal drives, it's hard to imagine anything beating Big Sur and the 90-mile stretch north from Hearst Castle to Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Rent a vintage convertible to experience it all the most idyllic way — those foggy sea views, redwood-topped vistas and dramatic cove after dramatic cove. Beyond simply cruising, there are picnic spots, hikes, scenic overlooks and remote beaches to savor a deux.

Along with being one of Mother Nature's true triumphs in the United States, this region is particularly well known as a honeymoon destination due in part to some legendary hotels with unmatchable views, hospitality and amenities.

Post Ranch Inn is beyond famous as Highway 1's most luxurious and acclaimed hotel, an escape designed for romance that doesn't allow anyone under 18 years of age. Extending nearly 100 acres, it's a reserve covered with redwoods and meadows, ocean-view pools and hot tubs and some of the most unique guest dwellings (including treehouses) of any hotel. The restaurant, Sierra Mar, is a destination in and of itself. Rates here start from $2,250 per night.

Updated several years ago, Alila Ventana Big Sur has won praise for its take on ultra-luxury hospitality — 1,200 feet above the Pacific Ocean. It's also adults-only, which makes for a secluded, sexy stay in any of the 65 accommodations, which include glamping. Accommodations stretch across a vast property, making it perfect for stargazing. Rates start around $1,300 per night for double occupancy, including all meals and various activities. World of Hyatt members can book this Category 8 property from 35,000 to 45,000 points per night.

French Polynesia

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

With its spectacular water in shades of bold turquoise, cobalt and pale aquamarine, and seemingly endless island stretches of silken sand fringed with palm trees, the islands of French Polynesia feel lifted from a dream.

Add to that deliciously fresh seafood, a relaxed vibe and spectacular resorts that put all that natural beauty within easy reach. The honeymoon sweet spot is about having exactly what you want — tropical cocktails, all the poisson cru you can handle, couples massages and snorkeling adventures — when you want it. A lot of that starts with the resort since, in French Polynesia, there are typically not a ton of off-property explorations that can be done independently.

Relais & Chateaux retreat Le Taha'a by Pearl Resorts has hosted plenty of famous couples for their own romantic holidays over the years on the private islet of Motu Tautau. Polynesian style is on full display across the property, which comprises 58 suites and villas, some overwater and in view of more touristed Bora Bora. The snorkeling is truly epic, while the food is fine, and the spa treatments are stress-melting. Rates start from $895 per night.

Thatched-roof skylit overwater villas are a specialty of Conrad Bora Bora Nui , where the Polynesian dream is alive in the form of tiki torch–lit dinners on the sand, swimming with sharks, intimate beach picnics and a spa using Biologique Recherche products. Rates start from $1,190 or 120,000 Hilton Honors points per night.

South Africa

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

Lovey-dovey vacations don't only take place on a white sand beach — they happen amid wine vineyards and wildlife, too.

South Africa is a mecca for both in a major way with the vibrant cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg, both worthwhile and natural wonders that have the power to blow anyone away. The Cape Winelands is one of the world's premier places to sip vino, not to mention the most picturesque, with jagged mountains that make for stunning sunsets framing world-class wineries and elegant restaurants.

Throughout the country, with a beach-studded coastline, teeming forests, wide-open savannas and starkly beautiful deserts, nature puts on its show. That's true for the local fauna, too, which includes the famous Big Five but also so many other rare and fascinating species. South Africa is home to incredible options for safaris, as luxurious as you can imagine and also as rustic.

The picture of bucolic heaven is Babylonstoren, an old Cape Dutch farm plus a hotel, garden, vineyard, bakery, spa, and everything else one could imagine. Time slows down on this sprawling property, and days are filled with mouthwatering eats and free-flowing wine. Rates start from $539 per night.

Otherworldly and awesome, The Motse at Tswalu, the largest private game reserve in the country, is an unbelievable destination for animal enthusiasts to soak up privileged private sightings of cheetahs, meerkats and more while also experiencing once-in-a-lifetime dining at Klein Jan in the midst of the red sand. All-inclusive rates start from $1,870 per person per night.

Todos Santos, Mexico

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

On the west coast of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, an easy hour's drive north of Cabo San Lucas, the surf and fishing town of Todos Santos is a sleeper-hit destination for couples.

Unlike Cabo, there are far fewer tourists, resorts and hotels in this "pueblo magico," as it's known. Instead, at the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, it feels gloriously off the beaten path and authentic — you may very well see donkeys on the beach.

There are galleries alongside the cute, casual restaurants that line colorful streets and many places to try excellent margaritas. The beaches are picture-perfect, with waves for surfers of all levels, whales to watch for in the winter, and baby sea turtles to help release with a local nonprofit. Boutique hotel options, especially, make this destination so appealing, offering well-rounded experiences with sexy accommodations.

With 32 rooms and suites, a happening central pool and a restaurant/bar, Hotel San Cristobal Baja, right on the beach, is an aesthetically pleasing place for couples to find privacy or make new friends with other in-the-know adult travelers — kids under age 12 aren't allowed. Rates start from $605 per night.

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

The most epic place to enjoy the cyan splendors of the Indian Ocean is undoubtedly the Maldives , an archipelagic nation made up of 26 atolls; chains of coral islands that are among the most photogenic in the world.

From above, the effect is like pearls in a chain of undulating jade water. In fact, a holiday here arguably starts the minute you board your flight since the scenery en route to each resort is so stupendous.

Related: The best way to get to the Maldives on points and miles

Every resort is essentially on its own private island — or several. The hospitality across the Maldives is truly next level, as locals treat each guest as an honored visitor to their home. It's a place for decadent meals (like local Maldivian lobster), palatial overwater villas, plus outrageously clear blue water for swimming with tropical fish, manta rays and even whale sharks, depending on the season and location. Bottom line: This is a bucket-list destination for romance if there ever was one.

When you've saved up to splurge, JOALI Maldives is a brilliant 73-villa island resort that's well worth it. In the Raa Atoll, awe-inspiring architecture and design, truly five-star food and beverage options across six restaurants (Japanese, Mediterranean and Levant cuisine), mind-blowing ocean immersions, and a dream-inducing spa all combine to create a flawless stay. Rates start from $2,040 per night.

In the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, home to one of the planet's largest gathering sites of manta rays, the freshly renovated overwater villas at Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas — with its magnificent undersea restaurant — make for an alluring home away from home in paradise. Rates start from $1,600 per night, based on half board.

Cyclades, Greece

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

Greece's most famous group of islands, the Cyclades, is the stuff of honeymoon, proposal and anniversary dreams.

Comprising stunners such as Mykonos, Santorini, Antiparos and lesser-known los, these Aegean Sea islands are resplendent with iconic whitewashed architecture, cobblestone streets, impossibly blue seascapes, sandy beaches, fresh fish and legendary sunsets. Across the 220 small, large and uninhabited rock islands are seemingly infinite options for crafting a memorable itinerary.

Related: 7 things no one tells you about the Greek islands

Some islands can be reached from Athens by ferry, while others require a flight. Regardless, it's possible to find virtually anything you're seeking on these islands, from hiking and nude beaches to fine dining and wineries. There are also archaeological sites and remote mountain towns to explore and secret beaches for crystalline swims. Indulgence is very much on the table, and couples can embrace it at every turn.

The five-star spa resort Calilo set along six miles of golden beach on Ios, is a gorgeous retreat of 30 unique suites bursting with original art, heart-shaped swimming pools, olive groves and wellbeing modalities and treatments. The overriding theme of love makes it the place to go for romance. Rates start from $715 per night.

For an authentic Greek escape, many of the 59 suites and villas at Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort located within a century-old mansion and 400-year-old wine cellar in Santorini's Megalohori village, have private pools or Jacuzzis, along with scenic terraces. Rates start from $587 or 103,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Kyoto, Japan

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

Without actually going to Japan , it's hard to fathom just how romantic the country can be. Not in a tropical island beach way, of course, but in a quietly beautiful aura of romance.

There are serene strolls through bamboo forests, ancient pagodas nestled amidst zen gardens, the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji, plus the most exquisite sushi and omakase imaginable. The culinary heritage and care that goes into each plate is unmatched — and don't forget the sake.

The beautiful and ancient city of Kyoto, in particular, is a destination for those who love history, culture and architecture, not to mention gourmet cuisine. It's famous for its Shinto shrines, imperial palaces, Buddhist temples, gardens and, each spring, cherry blossoms — though maybe most of all for being home to intriguing geisha in Gion.

All of that and more is accessible and easy to experience for couples who should also block out some time to savor their hotel, especially if staying in a ryokan or landmark luxury property.

In the historical neighborhood of Arashiyama, hugging a maple tree-lined river, Hoshinoya Kyoto provides a luxe take on traditional architecture with its gracious accommodations, on-site experiences (like incense ceremonies), a Japanese whisky bar and kaiseki restaurant. Rates start from $1,323 per night.

Blending authenticity with contemporary luxury, Aman Kyoto puts a modern spin on traditional ryokans with tranquil suites, a divine onsen and impeccable kaiseki cuisine, and easy access to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Rates start from $2,160 per night.

Lake Como, Italy

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

Italy is undoubtedly packed with timeless vacation spots that ooze romance around every corner — there's Positano, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Puglia, Rome, Tuscany and Florence.

However, there's something about Lake Como that feels so special. Maybe it's the fact George Clooney spends his summers there. Or maybe it's the gorgeous weddings held there each season. Perhaps it's the lure of Aperol spritzes and cruising in a vintage wooden speedboat past grand estates, sunbathing on a floating pool deck or even paddle boarding on the shimmery lake up in the foothills of the Alps.

Related: The best destinations to visit from Milan, Italy

Maybe Europe's most mystical summer swimming spot, Lake Como is the deepest freshwater lake in Italy and arguably its most famous body of water. There are cute hotels in town, along with shopping and dining, but the best place to stay is actually on the lake.

With plush lake view suites — designed by the illustrious Patricia Urquiola — and a picture-perfect infinity pool, the intimate and ultra-luxe Il Sereno Lago di Como is a primo place to take it all in. Rates start from $2,190 per night.

Related: 10 new exciting hotels to check out in Rome

Iconic and historical, Villa d'Este is a Renaissance palace dating to the 16th century with 25 acres of elaborate gardens. It's a classic choice for couples visiting Lake Como, especially since it has an immense floating pool. Rates start from $899 per night.

Cartagena, Colombia

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

Cartagena is the best of many worlds — Caribbean paradise, one of the world's best preserved colonial towns, nightlife hub and foodie fantasy. There is an abundant vibrant energy in the city, which is split between a walkable, technicolor town and a modern city with tall buildings. In the former, at all hours, music emanates from homes, shops and storefronts, seemingly taunting visitors to shake their hips.

There's plenty to do and see in the most colorful city in Colombia. A street food tour should absolutely be on all itineraries, with knowledgeable guides serving up fascinating stories and historical tidbits along with all the tasty South American eats.

Another worthy exploit: a boat trip to the Rosario Islands, where pristine, sun-soaked beaches allow for excellent snorkeling. A romantic trip is incomplete without at least one sultry salsa lesson and a night out dancing with your lover.

With 20 guest rooms and 11 suites with private plunge pools, Hotel Casa San Agustin, housed in three beautifully restored 17th-century homes in the walled city, offers a romantic home base with an intricate design and a fine Colombian restaurant with live music. Rates start from $394 per night.

Storied and sumptuous, the Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena — set in a glorious 1621 convent — is an iconic option that feels like a tropical palace. It boasts a courtyard restaurant and a large swimming pool, plus a long list of famous past guests. Rates start from $320 per night.

Best romantic holidays

Kyoto, Japan

1.  Kyoto, Japan

Tokyo gets all the noise, but Kyoto is for lovers. Known as Japan’s most romantic city, the historic and cultural capital of this most fascinating nation is a picture-postcard city of classical Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, traditional wooden houses and imperial gardens. The food is incredible, the people are magnificent, the atmosphere is spellbinding. What more could you want from a couples getaway? The city has become something of a hotspot for proposals, and it isn’t hard to understand why. Prep the knee!

St Lucia

2.  St Lucia

If chocolate is an aphrodisiac, romance is guaranteed to blossom in  St Lucia . Cacao is so abundant here that it grows by the roadside. The island is home to Hotel Chocolat’s cocoa plantations, and its hotel, Boucan, has a chocolate-themed spa and bean-to-bar experiences. It helps that St Lucia is gorgeous, with two distinctive peaks—the Pitons—crowning one of the lushest landscapes in the Caribbean. Hotels like Jade Mountain set the bar for views and romance, but couples will equally love St Lucia’s legendary rum-fuelled street parties.

Rocky Mountains, Canada

3.  Rocky Mountains, Canada

Find the right train and all our old-fashioned, romantic notions of rail travel become justified. The route we’d pick carves through  Canada ’s Rocky Mountains around  Banff ,  Jasper  and Lake Louise, on the Rocky Mountaineer. This is no ordinary train: viewing carriages have windows that span from the ceiling to seats so that it truly feels like you’re among the wilderness. There are four different routes taking a minimum of one to four days. Expect frothy rivers, towering spruce, glacial lakes and perhaps the occasional bear.

Provence, France

4.  Provence, France

Artistic luminaries of the 19 th and 20 th centuries were clear on the romantic appeal of Provence. Cézanne was a native of the region, but it also lured Picasso, Monet and Van Gogh with its lavender fields, pavement cafes and attractive light. From the sweeping bridge of Avignon to the glamour of Nice and cobbled squares of Aix-en-Provence – there’s enough eye-candy in this southern swathe of France to make even the most hardened realist swoon.

Prague, Czech Republic

5.  Prague, Czech Republic

The City of a Hundred Spires seems to have been built with love in mind. That can be the only takeaway for couples looking over the Czech capital from the viewpoint at Letna Hill, a beer in one hand and beloved in the other. Prague is a postcard city of stories, a famous old wonder that has long been a favourite of couples looking for a romantic getaway and for good reason. The Old Town gets most of the attention, but don’t be afraid to explore further afield either; each district has its own unique take on romance, from the modern stylings of Karlin to the grandeur of Vinohrady and beyond. Prague lives up to the hype, and then some.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

6.  Buenos Aires, Argentina

The country that invented tango is guaranteed to get every couple’s pulse racing. Dance aficionados head for the  milongas  (dance halls) of San Telmo in  Buenos Aires  for steamy nights pressed close together. After a few days soaking in the bohemian vibe and late-night bars of BA’s oldest neighbourhood, we recommend allocating time for wine tours in Mendoza and a posh eco-lodge in the remote heart of Patagonia,  Argentina .

Marrakech & Essaouira, Morocco

7.  Marrakech & Essaouira, Morocco

Despite its unfortunate reputation for hassle,  Marrakech  remains the stuff of Arabian Nights fantasies. Its sand-coloured streets are a gloriously intoxicating whirlwind, and there’s nothing quite as arresting as the call to prayer in this city of a thousand rooftops. We recommend splurging on a sumptuous palace hotel or medina riad with a decadent spa (many of which are still remarkably good value). Afterwards, retreat to the whitewashed coastal town of Essaouira for a peaceful wind-down by crashing waves.

Santorini, Greece

8.  Santorini, Greece

The calling card of this popular island in  Greece  is its famous sunsets. Blue-and-white villages trickle-down stark mountains saluting the sea, with dozens of hotel and bar terraces positioned for the chink of champagne glasses as the sun sinks. Many accommodation options are designed for maximum privacy, some have private plunge pools, and several are adults-only.  Santorini  gets crazy busy in summer, but that’s no biggie if you can afford your own little slice of the horizon.

Iceland

9.  Iceland

Iceland can feel like another world, a world filled with all the best bits of nature, from thrilling geysers to moon-like craters and more. A bit like love, right? Okay, there might not be geysers and craters in love, but you get the point. A romantic holiday to Iceland is something of a bucket list item for couples who visit in search of that very unique atmosphere. It doesn’t get more special than the staggering light show of the Aurora Borealis, an achingly gorgeous experience that everyone should seek out at least once in their lives. The eccentric side of capital Reykjavik is plenty romantic in its own right.

Palawan, Philippines

10.  Palawan, Philippines

Beach bums and lovers of the life aquatic can satisfy all their desert-island fantasies in Palawan. It’s a large archipelagic province of the Philippines (the easiest way to get here is to fly from Manila) characterised by virgin rainforest, limestone karst cliffs and unrivalled sands. Below water, there’s WWII shipwreck diving and cities of coral. Forget Thailand: rumour has it that Palawan’s Bacuit Archipelago was the real inspiration for Alex Garland’s The Beach . The author lived in El Nido for six months.

South Island, New Zealand

11.  South Island, New Zealand

There’s something undeniably dreamy about the prospect of waking up somewhere different every day. If you and your partner are adventurers at heart, you’ll love campervanning through New Zealand ’s dramatic southern island. Just the two of you and the open road, with mountains, fjords and lakes to gawp at. There are hundreds of camping grounds to choose from, many in remote, beautiful locations.

Rajasthan, India

12.  Rajasthan, India

Ok, so  India  isn’t everyone’s idea of romance. But Rajasthan is something special, and it’s still a destination where unique experiences and luxury are a relative bargain. You can roam abandoned forts and decorated palaces with their sumptuous harems, take desert camel rides, track tigers at dawn, and bed down in magical old maharaja digs with a G&T poured by a butler. Hire a car with a driver to make it stress-free; it’s surprisingly affordable.

This list of the 50 best travel destinations for couples is split into sections related to your personality and is chock full of travel inspiration!

A word of caution though: your bucket list is sure to get a whole lot longer…

Ready? Let’s go!

Best Travel Destinations For Couples Who Love Nature

Yellowstone National Park

Covering nearly 4 million square miles, and unifying 50 different states, the US has lots to offer travel loving couples, especially those who love nature.

There are 58 National Parks across America, some more famous than others, but all are stunning and beautiful in their own rights.

Whether you choose to visit one of the most well known parks like Yellowstone, Grand Canyon or Yosemite, or some of the lesser known ones, such as Great Basin in Nevada or the Volcano National Park in Hawaii , you’re sure to escape into a world of incredible natural beauty wherever you go.

Banff National Park

Similarly to the USA, Canada is also vast in size and home to over 45 National Parks.

Some of the most spectacular nature spots in Canada include popular Niagara Falls in Ontario, stunning Banff National Park in Alberta and practically anywhere throughout British Columbia’s coastal and mountainous regions.

Be sure to look out for moose, bears and the Northern Lights throughout your Canadian adventure!

Plitvice Or Krka: Which Is Most Worth Visiting

Whether you enjoy relaxing beach trips, underwater adventures or day hikes, Croatia in the Baltics is home to a lot of natural beauty.

Perhaps one of the most popular (and beautiful) natural spots in Croatia is UNESCO World Heritage Site, Plitvice National Park. Here, you’ll find gushing waterfalls, woodland walks and tranquil lakes.

Other top nature spots in Croatia include Krka National Park, which is also home to magnificent waterfalls, as well as the Southern Dalmatian islands and the coastal city of Split.

Views of Porto Moniz from afar

The tiny Portuguese archipelago of Madeira is not most traveller’s first choice when it comes to nature travel, or any type of travel when it comes to it.

And yet – with year-round spring-like temperatures , mountainous viewpoints, volcanic rock pools and an interesting culture – it’s hard to understand why.

Some of the best nature spots and top things to do in Madeira include the Laurissilva forest, Queimadas Forest Park, the volcanic rock pools at Porto Moniz, Pico do Arieiro and the levada walks.

At just 309.3 square miles, it’s really easy to see the best of Madeira in just 1 or 2 weeks by car. However, it can be quite challenging to drive in Madeira. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to get around Madeira , such as frequent coach tours and an easy to use bus network.

Iceland Sunset

Home to towering waterfalls, sprawling volcanic fields and bubbling hot springs , Iceland is swiftly becoming one of the world’s most popular nature travel destinations.

The most popular spots can usually be found within Iceland’s Golden Circle , which makes them easy to see and get to by car or as part of a group tour.

These include Thingvellir National Park , Gullfoss and the Geysir Hot Spring Area.

But you should also make an effort to head to the south coast in search of incredible waterfalls and black sand beaches.

6. New Zealand

Milky Way

Covering two large islands and over 100,000 square miles, New Zealand is quite possibly one of the most heavily sought after destinations for outdoor adventures and nature travel.

While you can explore glow worm caves, heavenly beaches, natural hot springs and New Zealand’s largest lake on the North Island, the South Island is home to New Zealand’s best wine regions, as well as glaciers, epic mountain ranges and even a ‘Dark Sky Reserve’.

Although you’ll need several weeks to see the best of New Zealand’s nature, this is one adventure you’ll be unlikely to forget any time soon!

Réunion

Found near the Eastern coast of Africa and close to Mauritius, Réunion island isn’t often considered by travellers.

But for those of you who venture off the beaten path in search of the island’s best nature spots, will be met with dramatic waterfalls, sparkling lagoons, pristine beaches and tropical jungle treks.

Jatiluwih Rice Terrace

One quick search on Pinterest or Google Images for photos of Bali presents endless reels of lush green rice fields, tropical jungles, bright blue oceans and endless blue or pink skies.

The epitome of exotic nature, Bali in Indonesia is most known for its volcanic mountains, tropical jungles, rice paddies, sandy beaches, colourful coral reefs and incredible underwater adventures. It’s a total bucket list destination !

Not to mention the nearby Gili Islands are ridiculously beautiful too – especially the honeymoon island of Gili Meno !

Views from Tintagel Castle

Often overlooked in preference of far flung and far more exotic locations, it’s often forgotten just how much natural beauty there is right here in the UK .

From the seemingly bottomless meres, tarns and waters of the Lake District , to the mountainous peaks of Scotland and Wales, beautiful Cornish beaches , shaded canopies of the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks and even the northern part of the ‘Emerald Green Isle” itself, you’re sure to find somewhere in the Great British Outdoors well worth exploring.

Just come prepared for unpredictable weather year-round!

10. Tanzania

No list of the best nature travel destinations would be complete without mentioning an exotic safari.

Africa is – by far – one of the most popular destinations for animal lovers, and while the continent is home to many safari parks, Tanzania along the East coast is home to some of the absolute best.

From the classic savannah destinations of the Serengeti, to chimpanzee trekking in the tropical rainforests of Gombe, big five safari experiences in stunning Ngorongoro Crater and even the colourful coral reefs of nearby Zanzibar island, a Tanzanian safari is sure to be the most magical.

Best Travel Destinations For Couples Who Love Culture

Japan

Thanks to its multiple millennia of history, as well as Buddhism and Shintoism influences, Japan has one of the richest cultures in the world.

The country is home to exquisite and highly detailed temples of worship, traditional Geisha performers and exemplary calligraphy artwork.

While Tokyo presents a more modern front, the old capital of Kyoto is where to go if you truly want to experience some of Japan’s best and most authentic culture.

The city of Paris at sunset

France has been at the forefront of the art world for centuries.

Some of the world’s most well-known painters and sculptors have come from France including Monet, Degas and Van Gogh to name just a few.

Today, France (particularly Paris ) continues to be the perfect destination for art lovers. Its capital city is home to the infamous (and sprawling) Louvre museum, as well as Musée d’Orsay, Centre Pompidou, Paris Museum of Modern Art and Palais de Tokyo.

Athens

Greek history spans millennia. Particularly the Ancient Greek era from 1100 BC to 146 BC is one of the most talked about in history lessons across the world.

Greece’s history has been a key influencer in many modern-day notions including democracy, the Olympics and even Disney movies, which have so often been based on Greek myths and legends.

Today, you can marvel at where it all started, thanks to the preserved ruins of the Parthenon, Acropolis of Athens, Temple of OIympian Zeus and many more tourist hotspots throughout the country and on neighbouring islands like Cyprus .

Palatine in Rome

Similarly to Greece, Italy and the Ancient Roman period of history is a well versed subject in schools.

Responsible for the concept of aqueducts, bathing and cleaning rituals, and wrapped up in Roman mythology, there’s no denying that venturing to Italy where it all began is the perfect trip for couples who love history.

Although you’ll find Italy’s history built into cities throughout the country, some of the best ones to visit include Rome , Pompeii, Verona and Florence .

Pittville Circus, Cheltenham

Having once been home to many settlements, not least the Vikings, Romans and Anglo-Saxons, the UK has so much history ingrained into its towns and cities.

Also, the UK has experienced many interesting periods of history since those earlier times as well, such as various monarchies and regencies, as well as industrialisation.

For those of you who are interested in ancient history, you should venture to towns and cities ending in either ‘cester’, ‘caster’, ‘ceister’, or ‘chester’, as these were all originally built as Roman camps. Some of the best examples include Gloucester, Chester , Leicester and Doncaster, while you can’t possibly miss a day trip to Bath to see the original Roman baths and pump rooms.

For those interested in royal history and the regency period, visits to London, Cheltenham and Brighton are not to be missed.

You should also make it your mission to drive around the Cotswolds as you can see quaint villages, thatched cottages and stone ruins synonymous with the Middle Ages here.

This 10 day UK trip itinerary should give you a good idea of where to go! >>>

china-wooden-door-travel-wishlist

The Chinese culture spans over 5,000 years. There’s such a richness when it comes to the country’s heritage that this alone is one of the many reasons why the country frequently attracts over 90 million visitors every year.

From marvelling at the myriad temples of worship and spiritual rituals, to learning more about the various dynasties in China’s history, as well as its porcelain, pottery and art influences, China is an incredible place to visit for culture lovers.

For a glimpse into China’s historic past, Beijing, Xi’an and Pingyao will be calling out to you, while a trip to Shanghai uncovers China’s future.

17. Austria

Gold Hofburg Palace Vienna

Thanks to world famous Austrian composers like Strauss, Mozart and Beethoven, Austria has really been put on the map when it comes to classical music and the opera.

Cities like Salzburg and Vienna are awash with opera houses, while a trip to the opera or to see a classical music performance frequently top tourist lists everywhere.

Alongside music, Austria is also great for architecture. Vienna, in particular, is full of neoclassical and baroque-style buildings and palaces , which are both grand and opulent in their appearance.

Flamenco dancers

Many extraordinary and traditional dances have sprung up in Spain over the years.

Among the most popular and well-known is flamenco, while other dances like the paso doble, bolero and fandango have frequently been included in worldwide dance competitions and movies.

Alongside dancing, Spain is also home to an interesting architecture scene. The medieval city of Seville and the gothic and other worldly city of Barcelona are two cities in particular that call out to architecture lovers.

Cuba

Although Cuba is slowly becoming more modern thanks to the car import ban being lifted in 2013, it remains one of the most extraordinary places to visit if you love culture.

For a start, it’s like stepping back in time as the island is still full of 1950s vintage cars. These are juxtaposed against bright and colourful architecture, making for perfect Instagram shots and memories.

Music also plays a key part in the Cuban culture. Many of the sounds you’ll hear around the country today have been adapted from other musically-rich cultures, such as Spanish guitars or Afro-Cuban jazz.

Walking the streets of Cuba will often present itself with extraordinary dancers and street festivals centred around music and dance.

India

From temples and places of worship associated with Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism, to elaborate wedding traditions and rituals , as well as world-renowned festivals like Diwali and Holi, a trip to India (even a short one) is sure to uncover its rich heritage and culture.

Whether you’re marvelling at its intricate architecture, watching uplifting music and dance performances, or immersing yourself in the varied religions, India really knows how to open up and allow you to embrace their way of life… regardless of where you choose to visit in the country.

Egypt

Of all the countries to visit for history lovers, Egypt just has to be up there.

The Pyramids of Giza are known the world over, as are the treasures that lie (or used to lie) within them.

There’s a reason why so many of our ancestors ventured inside the pyramids in search of gold, hieroglyphs and mummified Pharaohs. Although they may have been risking the wrath of curses placed on the tombs, they allowed us all to get a glimpse of the wonders inside.

Today, most visitors head to either Cairo or Giza (or both), which are conveniently located near to each other. But the city of Alexandria is also well worth a visit as it’s often considered to be the birthplace of literature and philosophy.

Best Travel Destinations For Couples Who Love City Breaks

Inside a Paris hotel lobby

The French capital of Paris is frequently referred to as the “City of Lights” or the “City of Love”, making it the very essence of romance for couples who love city breaks.

Whether you have one night, three nights or an entire week to explore Paris, pretty Parisian patisseries , the majestic Eiffel Tower, educational museums, sprawling art galleries and serene gardens are just some of the things that will be calling to you during your trip.

Inside Hofburg Palace Vienna

Vienna, Austria’s capital is the epitome in stunning architecture and is one for the history-loving, architecture-admiring, fairy-tale loving couples among you.

Everywhere you look, the incredible baroque and neoclassical architecture will be gazing down on you, making your mind wander off to fairy tales, castles and magical kingdoms.

Budget Things To Do in Italy: Imagine yourself living in a mansion in Verona

Found within the northern Veneto region in Italy and considered to be the birthplace of Shakespeare’s Juliet, Verona is so synonymous with romance that it’s a must visit for city break-loving couples.

A trip to Verona so often involves delicious Italian food, historic Roman ruins and romantic walks along the many rivers and canals.

Although this might be more of a slow paced approach to travel, you’ll enjoy every minute!

25. Amsterdam

2 day Amsterdam itinerary

The quirky city of Amsterdam, found in the Netherlands, is an enjoyable city break for couples intent on visiting interesting museums and art galleries together, while taking full advantage of Amsterdam’s relaxed approach towards erotica and drugs.

And when you can also combine this with romantic walks along the 31 miles of canals and a few historical and cultural exhibits, your city break to Amsterdam is bound to be unforgettable.

An Irish pub in Dublin with flowers hanging outside it

As one of the major cities in Ireland, Dublin offers a lot of variety to its visitors.

From drives and hikes out in the neighbouring countryside, to walks around historic Dublin, and epic half day trips from Dublin , there’s a lot on offer here.

And when you can also combine this with a naughty sip (or few) of Guinness, then you’re bound to have lots of fun with your travelling partner during this fun and relaxed city break .

Rome

Rome is a very popular city break option as it’s a place of great food, interesting history and offers plenty to see and do – whether you have one weekend to spare or just one day.

We’d recommend staying in Rome for at least 3 days in order to see the best of it.

Top tourist highlights include the Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Vatican City and Palatine, while the various “Piazzas” like Piazza Navona are perfect for whiling away a couple of hours people watching and eating gelato in the sun.

Schloss Charlottenburg

Berlin is one of Germany’s hippest and trendiest cities, but has an astonishing and gruesome history.

During this city break, you’ll both enjoy learning more about this extraordinary city and its various histories, including that of WWII and the fall of the Berlin Wall .

And at night, you’ll also enjoy visiting some of the many bars and clubs on offer here. There’s a reason Berlin is so popular with young 20-somethings!

Have fun dancing the night away, followed by more subdued and respectful sightseeing during the day.

Britain's smallest police station in Trafalgar Square, London

The UK’s capital city is great to visit in its own right with lots of interesting museums, art galleries, theatre shows, palaces and gardens to explore.

However, it’s also a great base for anyone interested in seeing the “Great British Countryside” as well.

Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Essex and Kent are all reachable within an hour or two from London in case you’re after an interesting day trip during your London city break.

30. Barcelona

Barcelona

Barcelona in Spain brings something a little different to a couple’s city break.

Not only can you marvel at interesting architecture, such as Gaudi’s Sagrada Família, and visit contemporary museums and art galleries, but you can also chill on one of the city’s many beaches.

So if sun, sea and sand coupled with Sangria and sublime architecture is your bag, then Barcelona is the city break for you.

31. Brussels

Brussels

We’ve recently discovered the wonders of Brussels, Belgium’s hip political gem, and we loved our city break so much that it just had to make it onto the list.

You can easily see the city’s many highlights in a long weekend as they are frequently found close to the city centre and the infamous gilded buildings of Grand-Place.

During your visit, you should make an effort to try original Belgian chocolates and head out on a  street art walking tour .

And if you have a little more time, try visiting one of Belgium’s many other nearby cities such as Bruges , Antwerp and Ghent by train.

Read More: 3 Days in Belgium Itinerary (3 Cities in 3 Days!)

You may notice that these first city break recommendations are all in Europe. While the best city breaks are often in Europe due to the continent having lots of small cities that are easy to get around in, there are plenty of other cities around the world that can be enjoyed as a city break too.

32. Los Angeles

Rodeo Drive, Los Angeles

Found on the West Coast of the USA, Los Angeles is most famous for its connection with Hollywood and the movie industry.

Admittedly, many of the city’s hotspots focus around this such as the boardwalk stars , Universal Studios and iconic Hollywood sign.

But perhaps lesser known to some first time visitors is LA’s stunning beaches, pretty canals and quaint marina.

Aim to spend 3 days here venturing out on both the well beaten and not so beaten track.

33. San Francisco

San Francisco

Another of the USA’s popular West Coast cities is San Francisco.

Whereas LA is closer to what you think of when you imagine California, San Francisco is like the black sheep of the family.

Often witnessing a bizarre fog that descends over the city – locals fondly nickname it “Karl the Fog” – San Francisco isn’t where you’ll come for sunbathing but is where you’ll come when in need of a trendy city break in the US.

Just like LA, you’ll want to spend at least 3 days exploring all the sights at a leisurely pace.

Did you know? Both Los Angeles and San Francisco are great stopovers on your way to or from Hawaii. We actually did both to help break up the long flights out to Oahu and The Big Island!

Sydney Opera House, Australia

Although not the capital city of Australia, Sydney is – by far – one of the country’s most popular cities to visit.

A long weekend in Sydney means you can spend a few days exploring its bustling harbour, stunning beaches and myriad parks and gardens.

Afterwards, you could choose to see more of Australia or venture further afield such as to New Zealand, Bali or the Philippines.

35. New York City

Manhattan Bridge, New York City

Found right across the other side of the US from Los Angeles and San Francisco is New York City – aka “The Big Apple”.

Although you’ll need more time to see the best of New York – four or five days is the ideal city break here – you won’t be disappointed by just how much you can see and do.

Wander through sprawling Central Park. Traipse around huge museums like the MET and Natural History Museum. Cross the infamous Brooklyn Bridge. Cruise past the Statue of Liberty on your way to Staten Island.

These are just some of the amazing things you can do when in New York City.

RELATED: 4 Day New York Itinerary For First Time Visitors

36. Hong Kong

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is frequently used as a stopover by airlines flying to Asia, but you could try staying for a long weekend in order to make this stopover more interesting.

If you do, a serene harbour, beaches, parks, gardens and temples will be waiting for you.

From here, many couples go on to discover the wonders of China, Japan, Bali and the Philippines.

37. Saint Petersburg (currently not recommended)

St Petersburg

Note: We wrote this blog post before the current situation with Russia, so you’ll probably want to avoid this one for now. We decided to keep the following information in this blog post, so we can remember how travel has changed over the years.

Although Moscow usually draws in the crowds in Russia, Saint Petersburg is a fantastic option for a city break and is easy to get to from many European countries, especially Scandinavian and Eastern European countries.

By spending a few days in Saint Petersburg, you’ll discover a myriad of interesting museums, grand palaces, sacred cathedrals and interesting architecture.

Why not combine a city break in Saint Petersburg with a trip to Helsinki or even Lapland to see reindeer and the Northern Lights?

Tokyo

Japan’s capital city of Tokyo is extraordinary in its own right but is also the perfect gateway to explore more of the country and culture.

A long weekend in Tokyo can uncover some of its most interesting hotspots such as Ueno Park, Tsukiji Market, the district of Harajuku and Shibuya Crossing to name just a few.

Plus, a Tokyo city break can also easily be followed up with a longer stay in Japan by visiting the country’s old capital, Kyoto, the deer parks at Nara and day trips to Mount Fuji via one of Japan’s rail networks.

Dubai Ferry Cruise At Sunset

Similarly to Hong Kong, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is also often used as a short stopover by major airlines flying to Asia, Indonesia or islands in the Indian Ocean.

But have you ever considered spending longer in Dubai such as 2 or 3 days?

This is ample enough time to see some of the city’s highlights including its beaches, marina, modern architecture and luxury shopping.

Best Travel Destinations For Couples Who Love Food

40. belgium.

Mary's Shop Display

Whether you choose to visit the political hotspot of Brussels, historic Ghent , or the diamond district of Antwerp, there’s no denying that Belgium is the most epic chocolate destination in the world.

Known for creamy chocolatey flavours and pralines, many tourists flock to Belgium intent on trying as many different kinds of chocolate as they can during their trip.

Some of the most sought after Belgian chocolate shops include Neuhaus (the inventors of the praline), Chocolatier Dumon , Mary , Godiva and Leonidas .

Paris in 3 Days: Macarons

France frequently tops foodie destination lists and it’s easy to see why.

Whether you love cheese, wine, bread or pastries, you’ll often find some of the best in France.

For cheese lovers, make it your mission to visit the largest cheese production regions such as Roquefort, Comté, Camembert and Cantal.

Love wine? The stunning wineries in Bordeaux, Champagne, Loire Valley and Côtes du Rhône will be calling your name.

While France’s capital, Paris, is flush with superb bakeries and patisseries … macarons, choux pastries, eclairs and croissants are just some of the must-eat Parisian foods.

Italian Food

While France dominates the sweet end of the food hierarchy, Italy rules the savoury.

Fresh doughy pizzas, homemade pasta dishes, locally caught seafood and olive side dishes are just some of the Italian delicacies you can expect.

That said, it should be every traveller’s destiny to eat genuine Italian gelato at least once too. Florence has – by far – the best selection in our humble opinion.

Naples is perfect for pizzas, Rome is great for pretty much everything and coastal towns like Catania and Positano are ripe with seafood dishes.

43. Thailand

Thailand

There’s a reason why Thai food has arrived in many Western countries.

Aromatic spices, healthy noodle dishes and Thai green curries with a bit of a kick are just some of the foods you can look forward to when on a foodie holiday to Thailand.

Thailand is also world-renowned for its street food and the variety on offer at market stalls and tourist hotspots is superb. You can also discover some of the cheapest Michelin Star food here as well.

44. Morocco

Morocco Mint Tea

Most travellers visit Morocco for souks, haggling and the bustling atmosphere of Marrakech.

However, we’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again: there is so much more to Morocco than just souks and Marrakech.

If you venture out of town, you’ll find beautiful valleys , clean beaches, an interesting culture and deserts that seem never-ending.

But you’ll also find incredible food.

Fragrant spices, tropical fruits, sweet mint tea and succulent meat dishes cooked in a tagine are just some of the amazing foods you can expect.

Spanish Food

The Spanish culture is heavily linked with its food and eating habits.

While lunch times are a heavily involved affair lasting for 2 or 3 hours and split over several courses, dinners are light and eaten late. And you can bet that tapas dishes will make their appearance!

When in Spain, you can’t resist trying paella or gazpacho washed down with some delicious red wine from the Rioja region.

Just whatever you do – take your time with it. A foodie holiday in Spain means eating slowly and spending time with your loved ones.

46. Denmark

Danish pastry

While Denmark is most well-known for its simple and sweet Danish pastries, there’s much more to this foodie destination than meets the eye.

Smørrebrød, a dark brown rye bread topped with various toppings is eaten as a snack throughout the day, while roast pork (aka Flæskesteg) is also a local delicacy.

Plus, cheese lovers can’t possibly miss out on a strong and pungent Danish blue!

Indian Food

Indian cuisine has made its rounds the world over. And weirdly enough, an Indian curry now seems to be the nation’s favourite dish right here in the UK.

But travel to authentic India, and you’ll discover a whole new world of Indian cooking.

Fragrant spices, curries with a kick, fluffy rice, crispy samosas and soft flatbreads will be even more flavoursome than what you’ll find at a takeaway.

Furthermore, the actual process of eating in India is something to be enjoyed and shared with others.

So… just like in Spain, take your time, try lots of different dishes and get to know one another again through deep conversation.

48. Germany

Lebkuchen

I’ve often joked that I should have stayed in Germany after I was born there. Germany truly is a meat lover’s paradise with lots of variety of succulent sausages and pork dishes on offer.

Some of our favourites include Bratwurst, Currywurst, Wiener and Frankfurters.

But there’s also more to German cuisine than just meat.

Other local delicacies include Black Forest Cake, Berliner doughnuts, Pfannkuchen pancakes and beers, ales and lagers.

And at Christmas time, Germany really comes into its own with tempting treats like Stollen, Lebkuchen, Christmas cookies and Glühwein.

49. The Netherlands

Dutch pancakes

Although some travellers won’t consider the Netherlands to be a foodie destination, others know that there’s more to this little country than meets the eye.

Both Gouda and Edam cheese originated here and that fact is celebrated across the Netherlands.

While sweet Stroopwafel and Pannenkoeken (Dutch pancakes) are well worth discovering – especially as simple street food dishes.

Full English Breakfast

The UK is a highly multicultural country so you’ll find all kinds of cuisines available throughout, ranging from Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai and even Caribbean.

But traditional British food is also well worth travelling for.

While our food is often described as “stodgy” or “unhealthy”, this is simply a misunderstanding of what British food is all about.

For most Brits, food is about comfort, which is why so many of our classic dishes involve warm custard or hot gravy.

Some of our best dishes include the humble roast dinner, fish ‘n’ chips, hot apple crumble, sausage and mash, quaint afternoon teas and, of course, the Full English Breakfast.

Santorini casts a romantic spell that enchants your senses and beckons you to indulge in its culinary treasures. Delight in private wine tastings at world-renowned wineries. And savor each sip amidst panoramic landscapes.

Discovering Greece’s Prettiest Gem

Bonus Tip : For couples craving nature and serenity, Pelion is a great place as Greece’s hidden gem . Brimming with lush mountains and crystalline waters, Pelion offers a canvas for unique experiences that range from invigorating hikes through dense forests to serene moments on untouched beaches. The traditional stone villages infuse your journey with authenticity. It creates a perfect harmony between adventure and tranquility.

Rethymno: A Love Letter to History

If you seek to immerse yourselves in culture and history, the city of Rethymno in Crete awaits your embrace. Its Venetian charm, cobbled streets, and bustling markets set the scene for a romantic escapade steeped in heritage. I recommend leisurely walks along the Venetian harbor. Or intimate dinners at cozy tavernas, and shared exploration of archaeological wonders.

Ionian Islands

Nestled like jewels in the embrace of the Ionian Sea, the allure of the Ionian islands is an invitation to a love story written across time. Among these treasures, Corfu and Ithaca stand as poetic witnesses to the dance of history and romance. Corfu, a verdant haven, wears the marks of its Venetian, French, and British admirers of eras past. It is an exquisite canvas adorned with strokes of cultural heritage, symphonies of music, and the poetry of art.

Meanwhile, Ithaca emerges as a destination rich with historical significance. It is the place that is immortalized in Homer’s Odyssey. Following the path of Odysseus offers a chance to delve into the essence of a journey. It intertwines exploration and devotion. Embarking on a boat-bound pilgrimage, you’ll trace the contours of Ithaca’s landscape, where history and myth converge. This experience allows you to blend reality and the echoes of an ancient tale.

The Mainland

Embraced by the embrace of history and devotion, the northern mainland of Greece reveals its treasures like love letters penned by the past. Here, Thessaloniki and Mount Olympus intertwine their tales with those who seek the whispers of eternity. Thessaloniki emerges as a cultural symphony, a destination woven into the very fabric of Greek dreams.

For a 7-day itinerary that includes Athens, check out my post from Athens to Crete here!

Its shores bear witness to the sun’s tender kiss, while its alleys echo with the footprints of empires. In the tender glow of its Byzantine Baths, under the watchful gaze of a statue honoring Alexander the Great, every step becomes a dance with time. And as you trace the contours of your spiritual journey, the tendrils of religious history intertwine with your hearts, creating a tapestry of devotion.

Don’t Forget a Day Trip at Mount Olympus

Imagine a journey that transcends reality and immerses you in the heart of myth and nature. This is the allure of Mount Olympus, a destination that beckons with its majestic peaks and ancient stories. Mount Olympus stands as a testament to the extraordinary blend of natural beauty and timeless myths. Its towering peaks pierce the sky, offering a haven where ancient tales find a tangible presence. Imagine walking amidst its captivating trails, surrounded by a vibrant tapestry of flora and fauna that mirrors the diverse hues of your own journey. With each step, you ascend not only in elevation but also through the layers of history that have shaped this remarkable landscape.

Then as you explore the northern mainland, you’ll find that it’s not just a journey through time and nature, but a journey that intertwines with your own. In every whisper of the wind and every heartbeat, you’ll discover the echoes of lovers who have walked these paths before, leaving their stories behind like petals in the breeze.

Peloponnese: A Tapestry of Love and Legacy

Imagine stepping into a world where history and passion converge. Where every corner holds the echoes of empires and the devotion of ages past. In the Peloponnese region, each footstep becomes a journey through time, revealing narratives of Corinth and Olympia. Additionally, Corinth, an emblem of history as vivid as the sunset hues, stands as a witness to the crossroads of power and faith.

Initially a Roman colony crafted from Caesar’s vision, Corinth’s chapters extend to the realm of Christianity through the letters of Paul in the New Testament. As you explore the ancient ruins, you become part of this enduring narrative, immersing yourself in tales of both political struggles and spiritual significance.

Olympia, a sanctuary of ancient tradition, resonates with the heartbeat of the Olympic Games, an institution originating in 776 BC. Within its embrace, the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of Apollo stand as testaments to humanity’s aspirations and the blessings of the divine.

Close your eyes and envision the cheers of centuries past. The rhythm of feet on hallowed ground, and the dreams that soared as high as the heavens. As you stand before these fragments of antiquity, the pulse of generations who aspired for greatness reverberates through your very being.

Saronic: Love’s Embrace in a Picturesque Eden

Picture a world where cars fade into memory. Where islands beckon with promises of seclusion and cobblestone streets echo with your footsteps. The Saronic Islands emerge as a canvas of romance, where island hopping becomes a journey into the heart of tranquility.

Aegina, a gem graced by the sun’s tender caress, takes center stage. Its proximity to Athens on the mainland offers a gateway to a world where time slows to a gentle dance. The famed Aphea Temple stands as a testament to devotion, forming a sacred triangle with the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon, a triangle woven with threads of faith and love.

Last But Not Least, For Couples Visiting Greece… Dodecanese

The Dodecanese islands are the southeastern set of Greek islands. The more popular places to visit in the region include Rhodes, a popular cruise stop for its beaches and gastronomy. Those looking for that perfect Instagram photo will want to include Symi in their travels. This island is known for how its village has such traditional architecture of two-and three-story stone houses.

Balthazar NYC

Balthazar Arrow

Keith McNally's flagship restaurant—this is also the master behind such atmospheric Manhattan mainstays as Pastis, the Odeon, Minetta Tavern, and Morandi, each also worth a visit if I may suggest a “Keith McNally crawl”—is a high-ceilinged, brasserie-inspired scene to end all scenes. Martinis are omnipresent at the bar and in deep red-leather booths. So are steak frites smothered in peppercorn sauce. But the asset that's fabulous with the greatest diversity are the patrons—like if that New York magazine cover all convened to share a meal. Alison Roman once told Interview : “The food is so bad, it’s too expensive, I love going there.” She's being facetious for comedic effect—the food is just fine, but it is true that you're really going there to go there. With your expectations duly measured, enjoy an uncomplicated onion soup gratine and some yummy, well-buttered escargot for starters before moving on to the steak frites main event. For dessert, there's nowhere worth going more than the perfect profiteroles, poured with warm chocolate sauce tableside.

Arthur Avenue

Almost every awning along the stretch of The Bronx's Arthur Avenue between D'Auria-Murphy Triangle and Ciccarone Park marks an Italian name possessing something—a pizzeria, a restaurant, a bakery. But just because it's all Italian, all the time along these two blocks doesn't mean all aren't welcome to come and patronize these establishments. It's some of the absolute best Italian food in New York City lined up for your convenience, bustling with life and good eats. Executive editor Erin Florio's relatives still do their Sunday shopping in the market, which she describes as "dusty but great." Poking around and picking a few things up there is really where it's at—bright seasonal produce, sausages of all stripes dangling from the ceiling, fresh-baked bread and vinegar-y imports from the old country line the walls in cans and jars. It's true one-stop shopping.

Film Forum Arrow

This is the last independent, nonprofit cinema in New York City. Little has changed about this humble, unpretentious theater since it first opened in 1970 as a screening space for independent films—there's the big marquee outside, lighting up an otherwise quiet stretch of West Houston; a ticket booth with microphone and glass partition; and a red carpet underfoot. It's retro without feeling dated, a warm place out of time. Behind the concessions counter, by the way, are some very nice people selling some very good espresso and baked goods (try the cakes carrot and orange bundt) in addition to regular sodas and candies. From new and obscure cinema made outside the US to a dazzling assortment of global classics that has most recently included Midnight Cowboy and Le Samourai , you can rest assured that every last thing on the marquee is worth a few hours of your time.

Central Park Manhattan New York. Lawn with skyline in background

Central Park Arrow

To get that Nora Ephron New York experience, you have no choice but to take a stroll through Central Park while in the city. As you step off the crowded sidewalks of 59th Street into a mass of green, you’ll hardly realize what lies before you: 693 acres of man-made gardens, meadows, forests, and  hillsides. If you ambled down every one of Central Park’s pathways, you would walk 58 miles. Along the way, you pass sculptures, bridges, and arches, plus 21 playgrounds, a winter ice-skating rink, even a zoo . But you’d hardly notice the four major crosstown thoroughfares, which cleverly disappear into foliage-covered tunnels. Map your park route to stop at classic Central Park landmarks, like the Bethesda Fountain, Bow Bridge, Belvedere Castle, and the Strawberry Fields John Lennon Memorial.

Chinatown Arrow

Chinatown is one of the neighborhoods that makes lower Manhattan vibrant and unforgettable. After surfacing from the steps of the Canal Street subway station onto the sidewalk, meandering past thick crowds, neon light shops, and vendors peddling fake designer bags, you’ll find yourself in the narrow streets of Chinatown, where there are bright heaps of produce, succulent ducks hanging in windows, and restaurants old and new. Touching Tribeca, SoHo, Little Italy, and the Lower East Side, Chinatown has a rich history and began being populated by Chinese immigrants as early as the 1850s. You can visit in whichever way makes sense for you. Whether you spend an hour devouring a box of roast pork or duck from street-style Wah Fung No. 1 before you have to proceed elsewhere, or you spend half a day shopping for produce, dining out, and paying a visit to the Museum of Chinese in America , everyone will gain something from a visit to Chinatown.

Brooklyn Bridge New York City

Brooklyn Bridge Arrow

When the Brooklyn Bridge was constructed in 1883—extending 1,595 feet across the East River, connecting lower Manhattan to Brooklyn Heights—it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Now, it’s a historic staple of the New York City skyline, transporting commuter car traffic underneath and touristic foot traffic above . Standing before arches and rectangles with city skyscrapers rising in the distance, will at once inspire a sense of grandiosity and slightness.

New York City The Noguchi Museum

The Noguchi Museum Arrow

This intimate, meditative museum in Long Island City was conceived and built by Isamu Noguchi himself. Here, his mostly abstract sculptures and often-copied paper lamps are displayed across two levels of exhibition space and throughout a quiet, ivy-covered walled garden. Even if you're not familiar with Noguchi's work, you've probably come across one of his Akari light sculptures—geometric or globular lamps made of washi paper and bamboo that glow softly from within—which have become something of a modern design trope since he started designing them in the early 1950s.

Yankee Stadium Arrow

A spring or summer day spent cheering at an NYC ballpark is a classic activity for a reason. Located in the Bronx, Yankee Stadium is the home field of New York’s 27-time World Champions. It’s a half-hour subway ride from Penn Station and approximately a 20-minute subway ride from Grand Central Terminal, making it easily accessible from Manhattan. It replaced the 1923 original in 2009 and cost $1.5 billion to build, making it one of the world’s most expensive stadiums. It seats 50,287 fans. New York Yankees games, obviously, are the main event here, but you can also attend concerts, college football, and soccer matches.

Jewish Brooklyn: Tours of Hasidic Brooklyn Arrow

The pockets of Brooklyn inhabited predominately by the Hasidic are not often explored on the average Big Apple itinerary. There are two guided tours you can take of Hasidic Brooklyn: Frieda Vizel's of conservative Williamsburg and the Friedman family's of the slightly-more-flexible Crown Heights (none yet open us to the cosmopolitan Borough Park.) The former rendezvouses in the bus plaza just below the Williamsburg Bridge, the latter around the dining room table of a family home. From there, you're off to the races learning from people who know and love their subject deeply. You'll also sample kosher sweets and stop at the deli, dip into a toy store or wigmaker, and meet quite a few friendly faces. Both are excellent ways to immerse yourself, for a few hours, in the culture of some of Brooklyn’s more enigmatic inhabitants.

Cathedral of St John The Divine New York City

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine Arrow

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine on 112th and Amsterdam in Upper Manhattan’s Morningside Heights is the largest cathedral in the world and the sixth-largest church by area. Hundreds of thousands of visitors walk through these doors annually for a reason. The cathedral itself—and its remarkable Gothic architecture, story-telling stained glass windows, and 17th century tapestries—is already worth visiting. But there is artwork that is especially meaningful to New York City here as well, including Keith Haring's white gold and bronze altarpiece and a 9/11 memorial sculpture by Meredith Bergmann, which holds debris of the towers in it.  The cathedral holds daily and Sunday worship services, which welcome all. There is no charge to pray, meditate, or contemplate in the cathedral. Visitors who show for sightseeing purposes can enter for $5 admission. Special tours are offered depending on the day of the week.

Staten Island Ferry

One of the first things associate editor Hannah Towey did when she moved to New York City was board the (free! bright orange!) Staten Island Ferry by Battery Park at Manhattan's bottom, watch the sunset over the water on her way to that far-flung borough, and then turn around and get right back on for the return to Manhattan. Forget the outrageously expensive Statue of Liberty cruises and the discomfort of the official ferry (although Ellis Island, unfortunately the next stop on the same trip, is worth a visit)—here you see plenty of Lady Liberty, Governor's Island, and the skyline without opening your purse. It's a dreamy 25 minutes each way, passed easily watching the myriad terns dip into the ship's wake. This is not to say you shouldn't spend a few hours on Staten Island if you have the time—the Botanical Garden is as gorgeous as it is free, and the food is impeccable with abundant Sri Lankan options (try New Asha, although you can't go wrong anywhere) and excellent Italian at Enoteca Maria for nonnas and their appreciators.

Morgan Library and Museum New York City Interior

The Morgan Library & Museum Arrow

The Morgan is like a multi-hyphenate millennial—only instead of actress/model/influencer/whatever, it’s museum/library/landmark/historic site/music venue. Inside the multimillionaire’s personal library, expanded into a must-see museum and cultural space, you'll find rare artifacts, paintings, and books, some dating back to 4000 B.C. that are worth more than your house. In particular the museum is home to one of 23 copies of the original Declaration of Independence; Mozart's handwritten score of the Haffner Symphony; the collected works of African American poet Phillis Wheatley; the only extant manuscript of Milton's  Paradise Lost ; and Charles Dickens’s manuscript of  A Christmas Carol . Swoon.

MOMA PS 1 Exterior New York City Museum

MoMA PS1 Arrow

The sister institution to MoMA   is no ordinary art museum. Located in a striking Renaissance Revival former public school building in Long Island City, Queens, MoMA PS1’s setting is just as interesting as its collection. All manner of cutting-edge contemporary art is shown here, with a collection over 200,000 pieces strong, from the likes of James Turrell and Ai Weiwei. The people-watching can be just as good as the art, as creative types from around the city come here to find inspiration.

Broadway New York

For locals and first-time visitors alike, seeing a Broadway show is a special experience, and one that is exclusive to New York City. Times Square is ordinarily a drag, but when you’re moseying into Midtown Manhattan for a show the bright billboards and lights don’t flash in your face—they dazzle in your eyes. A Broadway show's costumes, sets, songs, and stories are the stuff of dreams. Shows that could very well run forever include Wicked, The Book of Mormon, and Hamilton , but there's also an ever-rotating selection of revivals and debuts worth checking out. And that's not to mention the more daring fare happening downtown at theaters like the Public, Off-Broadway.

Inside Bemelmans Toulouse Lautrecinspired piano bar NYC

Bemelmans Bar Arrow

At Bemelmans, Ludwig Bemelman's illustrations—you might remember them from the Madeline books—adorn the walls. In one panel, a bunny smokes a cigar in Central Park ; in another, a man hands a boy a clutch of balloons. This is a bar where gawking is permissible. The cocktails here very much depend on who’s making them: an Old Fashioned might be a bit watery, a whiskey sour too tart. But often a dirty gin Martini is just perfectly executed. Everything is expensive—it’s clear why you’re here—so take the edge off that sensation by digging into the free, hearty snacks that float your way.

New York Botanical Garden Arrow

The New York Botanical Garden has carefully manicured flower gardens, lush fields, winding hikes, and impeccable greenhouses. There are spaces that feel deeply intimate, as if you're truly separated from the world, and there are vast expanses where it's hard to believe you're still in the Bronx . In winter, the greenhouses host an annual train show recreating all of New York City in miniature; the warmer months bring every floral delight imaginable, from cherry trees to peonies. Plan to spend at least half a day here and pack a picnic.

Benches on the Brooklyn heights promenade with view on lower Manhattan cityscape and piers on the East River

Brooklyn Heights Promenade

It’s one thing to be in the midst of Manhattan, on the ground; it’s quite another to look upon it from across the river. In Brooklyn Heights, a couple subway stops away from lower Manhattan, the city’s image looms large before you. Arguably the best view of the skyline in the city, the Brooklyn Heights promenade hovers above the Brooklyn-Queen Expressway. Underlying the peaceful, tree-lined walkway, traffic rumbles below. The promenade stretches from Remsen Street at the south end to Middagh Street at the north. Around the corner, pedestrians can discretely cross a basketball court to access a suspended footbridge that zigzags down to the piers of Brooklyn Bridge Park. While in the picturesque neighborhood, make stops at the New York Transit Museum, the Sardinian trattoria River Deli, and the old-time dive bar Montero.

Grand Central Station interior

Grand Central Terminal Arrow

Grand Central Terminal is more than just one of the busiest train stations in the world—it's a window into old New York and into a time when train travel was the ultimate luxury for the wealthy and a necessity for the working man. If you aren't commuting in or out of the city, avoid coming during rush hour, and take your time admiring the landmark architecture and checking out the top-notch dining and shopping.

911 Memorial and Museum

9/11 Memorial and Museum Arrow

Every American should visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum at least once. As you enter the museum, you descend from the street to bedrock level—the foundation of the former Twin Towers—and are placed in a meditative mindset, forced to recall where you were on that fateful day. The museum itself is a masterful balance: It's grand in scale, contemplative in its construction, and personal in its execution. It pays homage to the enormity of the loss, both physical and spiritual.

The Cloisters Arrow

Located on four acres in northern Manhattan's Fort Tryon Park, the Met Cloisters is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is America’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the art and architecture of the Middle Ages. The building overlooks the Hudson River and actually incorporates five medieval-inspired cloisters into a modern museum structure, creating a historic, contextualized backdrop in which to view the art.

Sculpture hanging from ceiling at MoMA New York

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Arrow

Located in Midtown Manhattan, the MoMA is larger than it appears as you approach it from the street below. One of the world’s most influential museums—displaying the works of important artists like Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Matisse, Rothko, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali, and Diane Arbus—it has 630,000 square feet of space and attracts more than a million visitors a year. While making a beeline for the fifth-floor Collection Galleries to take in The Starry Night and Monet’s Water Lilies is understandable, don’t miss the exhibitions, which tell new stories and can only be experienced in a limited time frame. Allocate time to spend pouring over the remarkable books and objects in the famous gift shop, too—an NYC must-visit in its own right.

Apollo Theater Arrow

Countless careers have been made and stars have passed through this world famous, legendary Harlem theater—Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Ross, Lauryn Hill, and D’Angelo to name a few. The venue—which began as a white-only burlesque destination until 1934, when under new ownership it began welcoming and becoming central to the Black community—has been active for 88 years, with swing, blues, jazz, R&B, and comedy acts taking the stage. Today, visitors can attend events like Amateur Night at the Apollo, one of the city’s most long-standing, fame-making live shows. Capacity is 1,500, with three levels of seating, and contrary to the way it appears on 'Showtime at the Apollo,' is intimate without much legroom.

New York City Prospect Park

Prospect Park Arrow

Prospect Park is in many ways the Central Park of Brooklyn; in fact, it was designed shortly after by the same team of architects, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and has many of the same features: sprawling meadows, walking trails, and picturesque bodies of water. In feeling though, it’s more rambling and less manicured than its touristed Manhattan counterpart. Prospect Park Woodlands is Brooklyn’s last remaining forest, with 250 acres of trees, turtles, chipmunks, 200 species of birds, and other fauna and flora. There's also basketball and tennis courts, a carousel, playgrounds, zoo, and a 3.35-mile loop for runners and bikers (they’re fast —watch out!). While there, make a trip to adjacent Brooklyn Botanic Garden , particularly lovely during cherry blossom season.

Coney Island New York City USA. Ferry wheel at amusement park with passageway in foreground

Coney Island Arrow

Coney Island has a reputation as a circus-worthy tourist trap, which is exactly what it is. But you may be surprised by the old-timey charms of this beachfront American town. You’ll definitely be impressed by the food and drinks—Totonno's Pizza, Gargiulo's and Coney Island Brewery in particular. Locals and tourists hang out on the beach, eat ice cream cones on the promenade, and stand in line for the famed Cyclone roller coaster. The beach and boardwalk along with spots like Nathan’s are open year-round. The amusement park itself is seasonal. Events like the annual Mermaid Parade (crowded as they may be) are worth watching for the audacity and theatrics you can’t find anywhere else in the world but Coney Island.

Lincoln Center Arrow

World-renowned performing arts center Lincoln Center is always worth visiting when the opportunity arises, and in October 2022, David Geffen Hall, home to the New York Philharmonic, reopened after a major renovation that improved the venue’s acoustics and spiffed it up with a modern look. The sprawling Upper West Side complex is also home to the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and Juilliard. All kinds of music, dance, theater, and films show here; some highlights from the upcoming calendar include the rapturously energetic New York Film Festival (catch the latest films long before they hit theaters, embedded in one of the reactive audiences on this Earth), the operas like The Life and Times of Malcom X and La Boheme , and ballets like The Nutcracker . Whether you’re on a special date or reconnecting with old friend when you’re in town, seeing a live performance at Lincoln Center will always make for an elegant and memorable night out.

Flowers blooming in Washington Square Park in spring

Washington Square Park Arrow

If people-watching is your sport, Washington Square Park is your place. Entertainment is a given in this intimate, not-quite 10-acre space, filled with career chess players, musicians, performers, students, sunbathers, strollers, and general throngs of Greenwich Villagers, desperate for a bit of fresh air. Take your time as you go through: Pause beneath Washington Arch, honoring our country’s first president (for whom the Park is named), and observe the laurel wreaths and intricate motifs that extend from the base to the keystones, atop which twin eagles perch like constant watchmen. Washington Square Park is the beating heart of this vibrant New York neighborhood.

The Met New York

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Arrow

For nearly a century and a half, the Met has remained the cultural epicenter of New York City, thanks to forward-thinking exhibits and an extensive permanent collection. With its Gothic-Revival-style building, iconic tiered steps, and Central Park location, the building is a sight to be seen. But step inside its Great Hall—as a ceaseless parade of museumgoers move to-and-fro—and you’ll feel the overwhelming sense of possibility and discovery that lays beyond. If you've got limited time or compatriots with limited attention spans, start with the Temple of Dendur, a 2,000-year-old soaring Egyptian temple (the only complete one in the Western Hemisphere)

Musician performing at Blue Note Jazz Club New York

Blue Note Jazz Club Arrow

Blue Note has been one of the best jazz clubs in New York, and the world, since the 1980s. It offers music every night at 8 p.m. and 10:30, and on Friday and Saturday nights has a late night series at 12:30 a.m., which showcases emerging talent. If you're looking to get a taste of jazz in NYC, you can do no better. Over the years, legendary musicians including Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ray Charles have performed on the Blue Note Stage, as well as contemporary jazz acts such as Wynton Marsalis, Keith Jarrett, and Chris Botti. Tables are intimate, close-set, and all-ages (with the bar being 21-plus).

Union Square Greenmarket New York

Union Square Greenmarket Arrow

Union Square is a place of the people, not unlike the agoras of ancient Athens—and no offering of Union Square showcases this quality quite like the bustling Greenmarket. From upstate New York, the Berkshires , New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, vendors sell artisan bread, honey, fresh-cut flowers, heritage meats, pastries, seasonal fruits and vegetables both common and uncommon, and much more. Don't miss the free events, like book signings and more: Cooking demos take place at the Market Information tent daily, beer and spirits pop-ups show seasonally, and the education station offers tours and tastings.

Rockefeller Center Midtown Manhattan NYC New York City NY USA. Image shot 052008. Exact date unknown.

Rockefeller Center Arrow

Rockefeller Center sits in the heart of midtown Manhattan, both in terms of its physical location and its prominent place in the city's folklore and culture. Whether you want to check out a performance on the plaza outside the TODAY show, visit the Christmas tree, or practice your best moves on the ice skating rink, you're in for an iconic, family-friendly experience. If you buy a ticket to Top of the Rock, you'll enjoy spectacular views of the city below. No matter where you are, you're bound to be constantly pointing and shouting “hey, look at that!”

Front facade of the Olive Tree Cafe Comedy Cellar Greenwich Village New York NY USA

Comedy Cellar Arrow

None of the promoters on MacDougal Street shouting “stand-up comedy tonight!” are trying to get you into the Comedy Cellar, where the show is already sold out. Blockbuster stars like Jerry Seinfeld and Eddie Murphy made their names at the Cellar; if you're lucky, one may show up the night you're there. Seating is intimate and close together, and there is a two-item minimum on food or drinks. It's 21-plus and vaccine-mandatory; be prepared to surrender your phone at the door, too. There's no bad seat in the house, but sit in the front at your own risk of getting (playfully) heckled by the host or a comic.

Museum of Natural History New York City interior Elephants

American Museum of Natural History Arrow

Truly one of the world's great natural history museums, the American Museum of Natural History spans four city blocks just across from Central Park . All aspects of the natural world are represented here, from a vast collection of taxidermy mammals, to depictions of the life of Native American tribes, to an entire hall dedicated to marine life—including a life-size model of a blue whale. The crown jewel is the dinosaur floor, with an imposing Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton that dominates the room. The newest attraction comes in the form of the long-awaited Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation , which opened in May of 2023 and, among many other things, boasts a comprehensive insectarium and vivarium. Breathtaking architecture from New York-based Jeanne Gang doesn't hurt, either.

People walking in street in front of Strand Bookstore Manhattan New York

The Strand Book Store Arrow

With its towering stacks, filled with more than 2.5 million titles, this 94-year-old bookstore is less neighborhood haunt and more globally recognized institution. You could call the Strand's employees tour guides, considering their deft ability to find the exact title you're looking for and recommend a book you may not have otherwise plucked from the shelves. The store will make you question why you don’t read more; and chances are you won’t leave empty-handed.

New York City Bronx Zoo

Bronx Zoo Arrow

With more than 700 different animal species spread across 265 acres of parkland thoughtfully designed to mimic natural habitats, the Bronx Zoo is a great place to escape from Manhattan for the day, especially if you're traveling with kids. Don't miss the giraffe building, the Congo gorilla forest, the house of reptiles, the flamingos in the sea bird aviary, and the sea lions, who always make for an exciting show. If you want to blow the minds of a bunch of kids, you can do no better.

Governors Island Arrow

Located in New York Harbor, only 800 yards from Manhattan and 400 yards from Brooklyn, walking onto quirky, car-free, brick-covered, 173-acre Governors Island feels like being transported to an alternate universe from the city—but in reality it's a quick, affordable ferry ride away. One-way fare is $4 and boats are serviced from Lower Manhattan’s Battery Maritime Building every day, as well as from Brooklyn Bridge Park and Atlantic Basin in Red Hook on the weekends. In the past couple of years, Governors Island has become an even more popular city destination, and has welcomed a slew of new luxury businesses. One is special in particular: Collective, the only place you can stay overnight on the island. Collective is a glamping experience, offering plush beds inside the tents, morning yoga, sunset cocktails, and iconic skyline views—Lady Liberty included, herself. Which is all to say, you’re by no means roughing it here. On the menu at their restaurant, you’ll find grilled seafood, gorgeous spreads of pastries, and more. Another luxury experience new to the island is QC NY Spa, with top-grade saunas and a skyline view-filled pool.

Brooklyn

Elsewhere Arrow

Located in Brooklyn on a hip stretch of Bushwick’s Jefferson Avenue, Elsewhere—a vast, three-story nightclub and live music venue with multiple dance floors, stages, and a rooftop—has become one of the city’s best nightlife destinations. Spinning disco balls and kaleidoscopic lights set the scene. A somewhat recent staple in the city’s nightlife scene, Elsewhere is a converted warehouse that opened in 2017. Blocks away from similar venues like Avant Gardener and House of Yes, Elsewhere stands out for its inclusivity, its intimate vibe in spite of its size, and for lifting up smaller, up-and-coming acts.

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

Rockaway Beach Arrow

One of the best public beaches you can visit in New York City proper, Rockaway is a sandy, sprawling stretch of surf located in Queens on the Atlantic Ocean, complete with a 5.5-mile boardwalk of delicious concessions. A summery way to get there in style? Take the ferry from Wall Street or Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and let the wind blow through your hair as you take in the city views, sailing under the Verrazano Bridge and past Coney Island on the way. From just about everywhere else in the city, you can also get there via the A train. Each stretch has a different crowd and personality: Beach 90-106 is the busiest section, with the most food and drink options; Beaches 67-69 as well as 90-92 are the surfing zones; between Beach 153 and Beach 169 you’ll find Jacob Riis Park, which is popular with young people and is a summer gathering place for the city’s LGBTQ+ community.

Bedford Avenue Williamsburg Brooklyn New York United States of America

Bedford Avenue Arrow

Sip iced coffee in McCarren Park, catch an indie show at Baby's All Right, walk two blocks over to some of the city's most-coveted Italian at Lilia (with a month-in-advance res, of course.) This is the busiest thoroughfare in hip Williamsburg: Bedford Avenue—and the L train that feeds it—might as well be North Brooklyn’s own personal people-watching catwalk. Pedestrians with voluminous pants, dogs with miniature rain boots, and high-speed scooters will swish past you. As you make your way south from the subway station, likely en route from the East Village, you’ll pass local businesses that characterize the area, like Catbird (ethereal, vintage-inspired jewelry), Spoonbill & Sugartown Books (poetry, special design and cookbooks, cards), and Awoke Vintage (best-known for their genuine denim often from the ‘90s.)

Empire State Building

Empire State Building Arrow

Though many across town are trying, there's still no better way to enjoy Manhattan's cityscape than from the top of the Empire State Building. The 102-story skyscraper was the tallest building in the world for 40 years, and though it's been outgrown by dozens of projects across three other continents, it's just the classic viewing point. There are, of course, always long lines to buy tickets, but that's nothing a little planning and purchasing in advance can't solve. It's also still a functioning office building with a bustling Art Deco lobby, so the people watching on the way up is excellent.

Tenement Museum Arrow

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is, as the name implies, a historic tenement house (two, if you want to get technical). On a tour of the tenements, you’ll hear personal histories of the working-class individuals who lived there and see how they made do with cramped quarters to build new lives in America. On a neighborhood walking tour—the other way to visit the museum—you’ll learn about the evolution of the Lower East Side and how its thriving immigrant population made it the most densely populated area in the country during the 1900s.

Industry City Arrow

This stretch of waterfront has been a hub of Brooklyn manufacturing since Irving T. Bush first developed his family's rail-marine terminal (then called Bush Terminal) in the mid-1890s to add warehouse structures. The sprawling campus that stands today in the quiet Sunset Park neighborhood is Industry City, the ripe and succulent fruit of decades' worth of redevelopment efforts. The idea here is one-stop shopping: Pick up a coffee from one proprieter and sip it while flitting through the Makers’ Guild’s wonderful artisan shops. There's also a slate of full-service restaurants and outdoor spaces—manicured lawns on-par with what you'd expect from those in a private, luxury apartment building.

Russian Turkish Baths Arrow

This is a really nice place to hang out for half a day—beneath the churning East Village, sweating it out in a no-frills den of functionality. Up a steep, nondescript stoop in that neighborhood and through a heavy door and you’re in, leaving your wallet in a safety deposit box in exchange for a locker room key and then down another stair to the subterranean saunas and steam rooms. They’ve got ‘em all here, from the red hot Russian room (where they also perform the platza venik treatment) to a more bearable Turkish, with a cold plunge and showers for in-between regulation. There’s also a bountiful food menu serving up such classics as borscht and beef stew to keep you nurtured.

12 Summer Destinations That Are Perfect for Couples

From the Adirondacks to the Serengeti, these idyllic escapes set the scene for romance.

top 10 places to visit in the world for couples

Traveling is one of the most enriching things you can do in your lifetime — and it's even better with a partner. Taking a trip together is a milestone in any relationship, kind of like moving in together, getting a pet, or shopping for furniture at Ikea. Seeing your partner in an unfamiliar place can tell you a lot about who they are as a person. Many couples consider taking a trip together as a way to maintain the spark in their relationship or even an important step before getting married.

Getting out of your comfort zone can lead to an even deeper bond, especially if you're in the first years of your relationship. Travel helps you form better lines of communication and find ways to compromise, but the best reason to travel together is more simply the memories you’ll make. If you're ready to start planning your romantic getaway, here are 12 places we suggest going with your significant other.

Banff National Park, Canada

The best part of Canada has to be its gorgeous natural landscapes. You and your partner can get your fill of awe-inspiring mountains and dazzling blue lakes in Banff National Park , Alberta's crown jewel. Spend a weekend on one of the area's most stunning bodies of water at the romantic Fairmont Château Lake Louise , where you can start a hike or rent a kayak steps from the hotel. Don't miss a sunrise at Moraine Lake, too, which has its own incredible trails. In the picturesque ski town of Banff, you'll find all the amenities you need as well as another grand Fairmont property with a regal feel.

Santorini, Greece

Monica Farber/Travel + Leisure

Gorgeous white cliffside buildings with bright blue roofs that perfectly compliment the ocean below? Count yourselves in. Santorini is a romantic oasis and a stunning place to watch the sunset, perhaps best seen from a private cruise or near Oia Castle. While you're there, take time to relax with your significant other in the bubbling waters of Nea Kameni, a hot spring on a volcano.

Hop on a motorbike for a thrilling adventure in Thailand's bustling capital, shop at a floating market on the outskirts of the city, and spend every day of your vacation devouring fresh and delicious Thai food. Foodie couples will especially love tasting the near-infinite variety of flavors from smoking street stands, hip vegan eateries, and locals-only dives. Have a spiritual experience together at Wat Pho, then settle into a luxurious hotel like Akara Bangkok , which has a rooftop pool with epic views of the city.

Beautiful architecture, a rich history, and plenty of arts and culture await you and your partner in London. Make memories on a self-guided walking tour of famous landmarks like Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Trafalgar Square, then stop for high tea and Champagne somewhere glamorous like Hotel Café Royal . If you want to get away from the crowds in the city, you can always take a tour to see the vibrant, green fields and charming villages in the countryside.

Tulum, Mexico

Go snorkeling in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, swim in the cenote (a natural sinkhole formed in the limestone bedrock), or hike the nearby Mayan ruins. Tulum's white-sand beaches are primed for romantic picnics and evening strolls. Splash out on a luxurious hotel or resort to celebrate your love — preferably one with an on-site spa or packages just for couples.

You and your partner won’t find a more adventurous vacation than a safari. Visit a conservation site or wildlife park in Tanzania to see and learn about local wildlife from elephants to giraffes and lions. Many tour operators that offer safaris also have education programs where you can learn about conservation efforts. Serengeti National Park is one of the most popular destinations in the area, where a Four Seasons property provides comfy accommodations right next to an animal watering hole.

The Adirondacks, New York

Immerse yourselves in the nature of The Adirondacks, a clean-air oasis less than a five-hour drive from New York City. You can pitch a tent, breathe in the mountain air, and gaze up at the stars through the canopy of evergreen trees. The six million-acre Adirondack Park has places to camp, but for a little more comfort book a stay in one of the cozy lakeside inns or chalets, complete with your own in-room fireplace.

Iceland may be on the chillier side most of the time, but it’s a proverbially hot destination for couples looking for a unique vacation. You and your partner can soak in geothermal spas at the Blue Lagoon , watch the glow of the northern lights, and enjoy a session in one of the many saunas. Beholding the dreamy landscapes together is special, and the Land of Fire and Ice isn't even too difficult to get to despite how otherworldly it looks. A direct flight from NYC to Reykjavik takes under six hours.

Hakone, Japan

Visit Hakone from late March to mid-April to see the cherry trees in bloom. There aren't as many here as there are in Kyoto, but it does have several spots for seeing the pink blossoms that pop in spring. Another reason to plan your couple's vacation in Hakone is the abundance of hot springs. Take in the natural beauty of the Japanese landscape while absorbing the healing waters on a nice day trip away from the city. You can also visit Mount Fuji or the Hakone Shrine.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

The entire country of Italy is the epitome of a romantic destination, but the gorgeous seaside villages of the Amalfi Coast are perfect for people who want a mix of beaches, history, and cultural wonders. Visit famous sites like the Emerald Grotto, medieval churches, museums, gardens, and natural stone streets. Sip limoncello alfresco at a cliffside haunt and go for leisurely strolls along the Mediterranean Sea for quality couple time.

Cappadocia, Turkey

Cappadocia is known for its “fairy chimneys” — tall, narrow spires of rock peppering the landscape. There are also cave churches, homes carved into the rock, and more that tourists like to admire from a bird's-eye view. Hands down the most romantic way to see Cappadocia is by hot air balloon . If you’re looking for a truly magical experience to share with your significant other, this is the place.

What better place to ignite your passion for one another than the City of Love? Paris is packed with bakeries slinging fresh pastries and baguettes, museums with world-famous art on their walls, and theaters putting on burlesque. Claim two chairs at one of the many sidewalk cafes and people-watch while sipping espresso together, and tick off must-dos like visiting the Louvre and snapping a selfie in front of the Eiffel Tower.
