Recent tour reviews

Not only did they treat us to a fantastic trip down memory lane, the new material sounded great. It's hard to believe that the set straddles 25 years. The classic sound, still sounds distinctive. Long may they keep entertaining us. And with Saturn 5, what a way to finish!!!

Perhaps they’re best remembered now for being the band that kind of gave Noel Gallagher his break in music - he toured the world with them as a roadie in the years leading up to the formation of Oasis - but there’s plenty else to be noted about Inspiral Carpets, even if it’s just that they’re one of the few bands to have had their keyboard player be their de facto frontman. With the band’s singer changing several times down the years, Clint Boon served as their official mouthpiece; coining the phrase ‘cool as fuck’ that appeared on their iconic t-shirts through their late-eighties, early-nineties heyday, he came to embody the swagger that was the epitome of the Inspirals sound. After reforming in 2003 with Tom Hingley on vocals, the band have since settled their differences with original singer Stephen Holt, who is now very much in the fold. They tour from time to time, retaining a cult fanbase in the UK - especially in their native Manchester - and play hit-heavy sets that include the likes of ‘This Is How It Feels’ and ‘Dragging Me Down’. Expect new dates soon, with Inspiral Carpets - their first new album in twenty years - slated for a September release.

Inspiral Carpets reunite for 2023 UK tour

It will be the band's first in seven years

Inspiral Carpets

Inspiral Carpets have confirmed that they are reuniting for a UK tour in spring 2023 – see full dates below and find tickets here .

The indie veterans will hit the road for gigs next March and April, with the tour kicking off in Northampton and stopping in Newcastle, Oxford, Brighton, Cambridge, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Sheffield, London, Coventry and Frome.

The band last played together in 2015, before they went on indefinite hiatus following the death of their drummer, Craig Gill. At the time the  likes of Liam Gallagher, Stephen Holt and the city of Manchester  paid tribute to Gill over Twitter.

Formed by Clint Boon, Gill joined Inspiral Carpets at the age of just 14 in 1986. He played with the band throughout their 90s heyday and remained when the band reformed to tour and record their self-titled, final album in 2014.

Tickets for the upcoming tour go on sale on Friday October 21 at 10am and can be found here .

The band also announced on Twitter that longtime bassist Martyn Walsh would not be joining them on their forthcoming tour.

Recommended

“@martynwalsh has decided to opt out of this round of touring for personal reasons,” they wrote. “We fully respect his decision & hope everyone else understands. Martyn is very much still a member of the band & the door is open for his return in the future xxx”

Legendary Manchester band Inspiral Carpets are reuniting for a 2023 tour

The group went on an indefinite hiatus in 2015 shortly after the death of their friend and drummer

Daisy Jackson

Manc legends Inspiral Carpets have announced details of a live tour next spring.

The group, who were an integral part of the Madchester movement, are heading out for their first live shows since 2015.

They say it will be a ‘celebration of the music we created, which has brought so much joy to people over the last 34 years’.

The tour will, of course, include a date in their home city here in Manchester , where they will perform at the Albert Hall.

Inspiral Carpets first formed in Oldham in 1980, and are loved for singles including This is How it Feels , Saturn 5 , and She Comes in the Fall .

Their keyboard player Clint Boon is a familiar face on Manchester’s music and nightlife circuit, DJing at venues and festivals across the region.

The group last performed at the Leeds O2 Academy, but went on an indefinite hiatus after the death of their close friend and drummer Craig Gill.

A statement from the group said: “Craig’s death had a profound effect on many people.

“The outpouring of love from around the world at the time gave some comfort to his family and friends as we all tried to come to terms with what had happened.”

  • Andy Burnham says government is in ‘chaos’ and calls for early general election

The shows will both celebrate the band’s history and commemorate the life of Craig.

They continued: “We know this will be an emotional journey for a lot of people, not least Craig’s family.

“We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate some of the music we created, and which has brought so much joy to people over the last 34 years.”

Tickets for the tour will go on sale at 10am on Friday 21 October at gigsandtours.com/tour/inspiral-carpets .

The Manc Audio

In the seven years since Troye Sivan’s sexual awakening on 2018’s semi-explicit ‘Bloom’, the Australian has emerged as a sex-positive powerhouse.

He’s been soundtracking queer nightclubs across the globe with the dancefloor-ready earworm ‘Rush’ – the lead single from his third studio album ‘Something To Give Each Other’, itself a further step into self-embrace and expressionism and one that has seen Troye embark on a global tour endlessly spilling out online videos of brilliantly sexy and sultry dance routines and on-stage playfulness.

His Manchester outing at the AO Arena is no different, oozing with sensual choreography that wouldn’t be out of place on the Magic Mike Live stage, yet set to make those with a more reserved outlook blush.

But that’s largely the point here, the third step in a chronological journey that carefully treads from the self-questioning of ‘Heaven’ on his 2015 debut ‘Blue Neighbourhoods’ through to his unapologetic onstage gyrating, a symbol of his self-acceptance.

Anybody uncomfortable in tonight’s crowd is undoubtedly at the wrong show, an open celebration of all-round gayness and its culture.

It’s inherent in everything he says, informing the crowd that he made a b-line direct to Manchester’s iconic Canal Street the night before, and tantalisingly hinting that he may do the same after the show, before immodestly suggesting that this may cause some type of stampede.

Perhaps it’s the reason why the show both starts and ends unusually early, and why at just 17 songs, it’s one of the shorter headline sets an arena is used to.

It’s also telling that Troye doesn’t go further back than ‘Bloom’, with the title track, the anthemic ‘My My My!’ and the Ariana Grande-featuring ‘Dance To This’ just about making the cut.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by troye sivan (@troyesivan)

The song choices are in-keeping with the mood of the evening, more mature and more adult than anything off his debut, or ‘Bloom’s retrospective numbers that failed to make the setlist.

Tonight is evidently an acknowledgement of lust, love and sex; a call to live in the moment and not to look back, and a hedonistic masterclass.

With that, each set piece is brilliantly positioned, the performance split into six acts each broken with Troye running off stage for an outfit change or for structures to be seamlessly assembled or disassembled.

Fan favourite ‘One Of Your Girls’ sees him don a lacey corset as he shares an intimate lap dance with one of his dancers, while the sultry ‘STUD’ glides like silk both in its vocal and on-stage performance.

But the biggest reaction is saved for the Charli XCX featuring (although sadly not on stage) ‘1999’, which rounds out the main set with a party befitting its lyrics, and gay anthem ‘Rush’ – complete with full dance routine and mesmerising light show to bring the decadent thrill ride to a close.

As Pride Month draws to a close, and with Salford’s Pink Picnic acting as the show’s pre-party for many, Troye Sivan delivers easily one of the biggest and most freeing celebrations of queerness Greater Manchester has to offer – via Perth, Australia, of course.

Stockport and its street party scene seem to be thriving at the moment and now Manchester’s increasingly popular Block Party is getting involved too.

We’ve all seen how SK1 Records and their street parties have taken off over the past year or so, so it only makes sense for Block Party to team up with them and others to bring their tried and tested format to another Greater Manchester borough this summer.

No, we don’t care how many times you repeat it, it isn’t Cheshire and hasn’t been for ages.

But back to the matter at hand, Block Party – who have already seen great success over at Piccadilly Trading Estate with the help of Manc brewers Cloudwater, Track, Balance and Sureshot – are set to deliver a day of music entertainment, food, bevs drink and fun for all the family.

inspiral carpets tour

Aptly named ‘Stock Party’ (some things just line up perfectly), the latest street party will be landing on the historic Underbank in collaboration with all their usual partners as well as local beer experts Robinsons Brewery and Runaway, as well as Michelin-recognised Where The Light Gets and many more.

Being brought to life with the help of Stockport’s Business Improvement District (BID), Totally Stockport and Stockport Council as part of the growing ‘Old Town’ revival moment, they’re set to deliver a day of music entertainment, food & drink and family activities around the town centre.

‘ Robbies’ Brewery on Lower Hillgate will be home to the main festival square and bar, pouring the freshest beers from each of the breweries, with tunes being pumped out onto the street by SK1 Records and a special DJ set curated by Bohemian Arts Club to ensure a proper party atmosphere.

For those who prefer a nice pinot noir, Isca will be serving up a selection of their natural wines; plus Where The Light Gets In will be serving up BBQ and Honest Crust – one of the best pizza places anywhere in Greater Manchester – will be serving up slices… of heaven, we mean.

It doesn’t stop there – not even close…

Although we can promise plenty of dancing and footfall, Underbank will also be lined with tables and chairs enabling festival-goers to enjoy an alfresco beer from a five-tap van located outside Rare Mags, while Yellowhammer pottery and bakery will see visitors can build their own tankard in a special one-off.

There are even more offerings food and drink-wise too, with popular local bars Spinn Off and Cracked Actor, Cafe San Juan and Marley’s Tacos all serving up street food and pints for you to gulp down in the sunshine (fingers crossed).

Head just a few metres over the road and you’ll also find Stockport’s oldest and newly restored White Lion pub hosting an Old Town General Store DJ set and tap takeover, with Ginger’s Ice Cream Emporium on hand serving up their artisan ice cream. As if things couldn’t get any more summery.

Best of all, you don’t have to wait too long as Stock Party is happening on 20 July, lasting from 12-9pm and is completely free entry. You can bank on us being there and dancing along the cobbles until dusk. See you in SK next month!
