Dean Brody and Dallas Smith - Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone Tour.

With multiple JUNO Awards and a plethora of CCMA Awards to each of their credits, Dean Brody and Dallas Smith remain two of the most celebrated artists in Canadian Country Music. New music is on the immediate horizon from both artists heading into the summer festival season and tour, with Smith’s EP “The Fall” out on March 15, which includes his latest chart topping single, “Rhinestone World”; and Brody dropping a brand new single March 8, titled “Whiskey in a Teacup”, followed by a new EP in April.

Smith’s knack for chart topping singles has him credited as the first and only Canadian Country Artist in the Nielson BDS era to have four consecutive #1 singles from the same album, and six in total, surpassing Shania Twain on both fronts.

Brody’s compelling songwriting abilities have also led to record-breaking stats, such as the title and award for #1 selling Canadian country digital track of all-time, while showcasing his unparalleled ability to bring storytelling to the forefront of country music.

Fans across the country are sure to be blown away by the pairing of these two award-winning artists, through the course of an immersive, co-headlined show.

Also joining this acclaimed duo on tour as special guests are: country star Chad Brownlee, who is actively preparing for his first major label album debut, with a new single recently released, titled, “Forever’s Gotta Start Somewhere”; and rising star MacKenzie Porter, who recently released two new tracks, “Drive Thru” and her single currently climbing the Canadian charts, “About You”, both of which showcase the incredible abilities of this Nashville-based, Canadian-born singer-songwriter.

Also joining as special guest on the Toronto and Ottawa dates will be American singer-songwriter, Jimmie Allen, best known for his #1 hit single, “Best Shot”.

Unlike many country stars, Dean Brody has never been one to concentrate on cover tunes.

In fact, he hasn’t even found much success writing with other people.

He has tried. After all, the Jaffray, B.C., native has spent more than 13 years in Nashville, giving him plenty of opportunity to try his hand at co-writing hits with Music City’s healthy contingent of efficient songsmiths.

The Nashville machinery just doesn’t work for him.

“I’ve tried, I’m terrible,” says Brody, in an interview with Postmedia from a tour stop late last month in Sydney, N.S.

“My wheels turn so slow and everyone else is moving so fast. I don’t know what it is, but my sprocket doesn’t fit their sprockets. I’m like the slowest cog. I write at night sometimes and I don’t write very often. I write out of the blue when it hits me and that doesn’t fit well with the whole template machine that Nashville has become.”

Not that this has hampered his career in any way. Brody is currently rumbling across the country as part of a convoy that includes four tour buses and three tractor trailers. It’s all in service of his co-headlining tour with Dallas Smith dubbed Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone, which also features Canuck country stars the Reklaws, Chad Brownlee and MacKenzie Porter. It hits Calgary on Oct. 17 and 18 for shows at the Grey Eagle Casino.

But because the Friends tour features two headliners, Brody has been able to enter some unchartered territory with Smith. Given the party atmosphere and fraternal vibes that overtake the stage each night, Brody has decided to duet on some of Smith’s songs and vice-versa. He shows up to sing on Smith’s Somebody Somewhere, while Smith lends his pipe’s to Brody’s Undone and Love Would Be Enough.

“It’s interesting getting inside his head because I have to learn his songs,” says Brody. “Entering his world of music has been cool. I’m learning and he is learning and we’re having a good ole’ time out there.”

Not he lacks his own material. Brody has been playing all of the tunes from his newest release, Black Sheep. The EP has been a fan favourite, with the sly the-girl-ain’t-what-she-seems single Whisky in a Teacup ascending to the No. 3 spot on the Billboard country charts this summer. The six songs reveal an assured artist hitting his stride penning and performing radio-friendly gold, veering from the stomping, guitar-fuelled outsider’s lament of the title track to breezy sing-a-longs such as closing number Dose of Country.

Landing a co-headlining tour with Smith — who picked up the Entertainer of the Year and Male Artist of the Year awards last month in Calgary at the Canadian Country Music Awards — is an indication of Brody’s top-tier status within the country scene of Great White North. But as both Brody and Smith have proven, the borders for country music seem to be blurring more and more these days.

“We can get on the American playlists,” Brody says. “I think the iTunes streaming world has brought down the old-boys club, which is U.S. radio. You don’t have to necessarily play by that game anymore. That’s exciting.”

Brody’s early foray into American country was a big gamble 13 years ago. When his job at a sawmill in B.C. was replaced by automation, the government paid him to attend Edmonton’s Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

On a whim, he began sending some of his songs to record-label brass in Nashville. Much to his surprise, he was contacted by a senior A&R man at Sony, who made no promises but told him he could come down to Music City to sell his wares in person.

“I was in my second year of pipeline engineering at NAIT and I was just staring at the computer and going ‘I don’t know if I can do this for eight hours a day,’ ” he says. “I had a couple of classes that were just hour-long computer classes and I was so bored. I sent a bunch of unsolicited packages down to Nashville.”

Brody accepted, packing his stuff into a U-Haul and heading down to Nashville. He was no overnight success. But by 2008, he signed to Broken Bow Records and landed his first American hit, Brothers, which earned him a CCMA award for best single.

He would eventually switch to Open Road Records, which has released a string of hit albums from the artist since 2010. If there is any downside to a co-headlining tour, it’s that both Brody and Smith have to pare down their sets, which now draw from an impressive canon of songs.

“Dallas and I are playing all our new stuff,” Brody says. “It’s just trying to decide what songs we take from our old catalogue and which ones do we not. It’s tough. It’s a good problem to have. Both of us remember when we didn’t have enough songs.”

In fact, recounting his first starry-eyed forays into Nashville for Postmedia had Brody feeling a bit nostalgic.

“It was a crazy dream, but I just love music,” he says. “I haven’t shared that story in some time, but as I’m telling it again, it’s like ‘wow, that was crazy that it worked out.’ It was a long shot. It was a dream and here we are years later and I love it. It’s the best job.”

The Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone, featuring Dean Brody, Dallas Smith, Chad Brownlee and Mackenzie Porter tour hits Calgary’s Grey Eagle Casino on Oct. 17 and 18 at 7 p.m.

Fantastic show. James Barker Band and High Valley were great opening acts. The arena was packed and the sound was very good. Dean Brody put on a great show. He was very engaging with the audience. Great night.

#BGReviewer: Dean Brody and Dallas Smith

Last night, Canadian country music talent was on full display at Budweiser Gardens!  Dean Brody, Dallas Smith, MacKenzie Porter, and Chad Brownlee, along with The Reklaws, proved that “Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone”, and the audience was treated to an incredible show.  Walking up to the venue, in a mass of plaid shirts and cowboy boots, there was a buzz in the air that only amplified once inside Budweiser Gardens.

The Reklaws started things off with an amazing opening set.  They began with their new single Old Country Soul , followed with their hits I Do Too , Feels Like That , and Long Live the Night .  The Start.ca stage felt even more intimate when they sat on the steps of the stage and performed a mash-up of John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads and their song Roots .  The brother-sister duo had the crowd back up on their feet shortly after, singing along to party songs like Wish You Were Beer .  They were the perfect introduction to the show.

When the curtain lifted for the next performers, the atmosphere became electric, which it remained for the entirety of the concert.  Dean Brody and Dallas Smith ooze charisma and star power, and here they were together on one stage.  The special effects lighting only enhanced the spectacle, as Dean and Dallas took turns singing duets of each other’s well-known songs.  Hearing Dean sing parts of Dallas’ Somebody Somewhere , and Dallas sing along with Dean’s Undone was a truly unique experience.

Dallas Smith disappeared backstage and Dean Brody, wearing his signature cowboy hat, took the spotlight.  He performed crowd favourites like Bush Party , Dirt Roads Scholar , Whiskey in a Teacup , and Mountain Man to name a few.  The entire show had that Friday feeling, which was evident when Dean sang It’s Friday , and everyone had their drinks raised high.  His velvet-smooth vocals gave the audience an escape from the drizzly, cool day that was outside when he sang Good Goodbye and Roll That Barrel Out .  His warm voice, accompanied by the band, along with strategic lighting colour choices, made us feel like we were going to have one more margarita in Mexico, or twist the tap and pass it around in Jamaica.  When the stage lit up red and white, everyone knew what song was next, and I don’t think there was a single person in the arena not belting out Canadian Girls along with him.

In the final verses of Dean’s song Bounty , MacKenzie Porter graced the stage with the most beautiful, dazzling, silver pair of thigh-high boots I’ve ever seen.  The beauty of the boots was only outdone by the beauty of her voice.  She went on to sing her current radio single, These Days .  Chad Brownlee was next to perform, joking he just can’t avoid arenas, a reference to his past career as a professional hockey player.  The Canadian country music scene would’ve lost a gem if he didn’t pursue his passion for music.  He sang his single Forever’s Gotta Start Somewhere , as well as his classic When the Lights Go Down .  The crowd overwhelmed him with applause.

Dallas Smith returned after Brownlee, to treat the audience to more of his hits.  Everyone was singing (some of us screaming) along, to favourites like Lifted , Tippin Point , and Wastin’ Gas , as well as newer songs like Drop and Timeless .  Dallas used the entire stage to deliver his performance, and was often seen acknowledging his fans with waves, as well as taking a selfie with one lucky fan’s phone.  His energy was contagious, and everyone was dancing along.  His authentic country-rocker voice enthralled the crowd from start to finish, including softer moments like when he serenaded us with Autograph .  Dallas delivered, and it didn’t go unnoticed.

To finish off the show, Dean and Dallas came back out onstage to the “Friends Bar” where Dean sang his emotional song Time .  Dallas treated the crowd to Wasting My Time , a throwback song from his days in the rock band Default.  Chad Brownlee and MacKenzie Porter joined the guys on stage for the title song for the tour, Friends Don’t Let Friends Drink Alone .  Of course, no concert would be complete without an encore, and Dean and Dallas did not disappoint.  It didn’t matter if you were front row or in the Cheap Seats , it was an amazing show from beginning to end.

I’d like to thank Budweiser Gardens for the opportunity to be the reviewer for this concert, and for the $25 Downtown Dollars that were an extra bonus to an already fantastic night!

Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone in Kitchener with Dallas Smith, Dean Brody, and More!

Front porch.

"Friends Don't Let Friends Drink Alone" by Dallas Smith, Dean Brody and Mackenzie Porter

The much anticipated Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone tour made it’s third stop in Kitchener last night at Centre in the Square. The tour features headliners Dean Brody and Dallas Smith, with supporting acts Mackenzie Porter, the Reklaws, and a surprise Chad Brownlee feature.

The concert was nothing short of the expectations set out when first announced. The Reklaws opened the show to their hometown crowd. The Cambridge sibling duo never forget to shout out their roots and tip their hats to the supportive hometown crowd. Their energy really flooded the auditorium, getting the adrenaline rushing through the crowd. They played their latest radio release Old Country Soul, along with hits Long Live the Night, Feels Like That, I Do Too and Wish You Were Beer.

Following their set, the curtains fell, and viewers waited for what whatever was happening behind it. Not sure how it was going to go, I chatted with my friend about how the stage would be shared, who would go first, who would get to close. We also wondered if Mackenzie Porter would play an opening set next.

Finally the curtails fell back and both Dean Brody and Dallas Smith took the stage to duet some of each other’s biggest hits. Dean and Dallas are both highly energetic on stage as individuals; together they infected the crowd with excitement. It was a unique experience to say the least, and I’ve been to many shows.

After a handful of duets, Dean left the stage for a solo Dallas Smith set, which featured some recent hits, and some classics. He shared his soon-to-be released to radio “Timeless,” which was released as part of the Drop EP, earlier this year. We got our first glimpse of Mackenzie Porter when they shared the stage for his Teri Clark duet, “One Drink Ago.” She then got to play her latest radio single, “These Days.”

The stage went black and we were treated to Chad Brownlee, a Canadian country favourite, who’s been quiet over the last couple years. We got to hear “Forever’s Gotta Start Somewhere” and “When the Lights Go Down.”

Dean Brody returned for his solo set, which featured hits like Country Girls, Mountain Man, Good Goodbye, Bring Down the House, Bounty, Upside Down, and his most recent, Black Sheep.

Dean closed his set with Bounty, the “Friends Bar” was set up and Dallas returned. A familiar group of fans, who’d been to 40 shows were invited to have a drink with Dean and Dallas while they played acoustic hits, at each other’s requests. Dallas asked Dean to play “Time,” and Dean followed up by requesting a Default track, “Wasting My Time.”

Mackenzie Porter and Chad Brownlee returned for the tour titled track, “Friends Don’t Let Friends Drink Alone.”

If you have the opportunity to snag some tickets last-minute for any stop on the Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone tour , you won’t be disappointed!

In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.

ABOUT JAMES BARKER BAND James Barker Band have fueled an incredible story over the last six years, largely on their own, from playing opening spots in small Ontario bars to charting multiple No. 1 singles, garnering hundreds of millions of global streams, and headlining some of Canada’s largest country music festivals. Now, with new music on the way, the four-piece is continuing their meteoric ascent in Nashville. Made up of James Barker (lead vocals/guitar), Taylor Abram (guitar/background vocals), Connor Stephen (drums), and Bobby Martin (bass), the members of James Barker Band grew up within an hour of each other in rural towns surrounding Toronto. In 2017, they sent their single “Chills” straight to the top of Billboard’s Canadian Hot 100 chart. The upbeat anthem also achieved Platinum status, alongside other songs from their introductory LP Game On, earning them numerous national awards. In addition, these best-friends have already amassed another six GOLD-certified and PLATINUM-certified tracks which include “There’s A Drink For That”, “Just Sayin’,” “It’s Working,” “Lawn Chair Lazy,” “Good Together, and “Keep It Simple” (PLATINUM). Now, as the rising stars reposition themselves in Nashville, many miles from their hometowns, the opportunities are limitless – but the band remains grounded in their small-town roots. If anything, he’s gotten stronger and is learning new ways to roll with the music industry punches.
