Next, head to Broadbeach, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and proximity to Pacific Fair, one of Australia’s largest shopping centres. 

This beach offers a more relaxed vibe, perfect for unwinding after indulging in retail therapy. The soft sands and gentle waves provide a peaceful retreat.

In the afternoon, explore Palm Beach, celebrated for its clean, unique beachfront living. It’s an ideal spot for those seeking a quieter, pristine beach experience. 

The area’s natural beauty makes it perfect for a leisurely walk or a tranquil picnic by the sea.

As the day transitions to evening, visit Currumbin Beach, nestled in lush bushland. This area is known for its picturesque stretch of sand between Currumbin Alley and Elephant Rock. 

The rock pools here are ideal for a refreshing swim or a relaxed picnic as the sun sets.

Conclude your day at Burleigh Heads, where the dramatic backdrop of Burleigh Heads National Park meets one of the finest surf beaches on the coast. 

The vibrant dining scene offers many options for a memorable dinner with stunning ocean views. 

After your meal, immerse yourself in the lively nightlife, where bars and cosy spots come alive with music and local charm.

Day 2: Sea World Adventures

Embark on an aquatic adventure at Sea World, where the ocean’s wonders come to life. 

This marine park is a delightful blend of thrilling rides, educational exhibits, and up-close encounters with marine life. 

It’s an experience that appeals to all, whether you’re a family with kids or fascinated by the ocean’s mysteries.

One of the highlights for me was the mesmerising jellyfish exhibit. Watching these ethereal creatures glide through the water, changing colours in a hypnotic dance, was an experience I’ll never forget. 

Learning about these fascinating and often misunderstood creatures is a visual spectacle and an educational journey.

For those seeking a bit of playful fun, Castaway Bay – Battle Boats is a must-try. I had a blast here, engaging in friendly water battles. 

Armed with water cannons, visitors can soak each other, making for a hilarious and refreshing experience. 

It’s a great way to cool off and share some laughs, especially on a warm Gold Coast day.

The thrill-seekers in my family were drawn to the Leviathan roller coaster. 

My husband and daughters braved this ride and returned exhilarated, declaring it the most thrilling experience ever. 

The sheer excitement and adrenaline rush of the Leviathan is something they still talk about, insisting that no other roller coaster could ever match up to this experience.

Day 3: Cinematic Thrills at Movie World

Prepare for a day of adventure and excitement at Warner Bros. Movie World , where the magic of the movies comes to life. 

This movie-themed park is a wonderland for those who love the thrill of rides, the joy of shows, and the fun of meeting beloved characters. 

It’s an entire day dedicated to cinematic magic and exhilarating experiences.

One of the standout attractions is the Wild West Falls Adventure Ride. Despite waiting over 30 minutes, the anticipation only adds to the excitement. 

This ride transports you into the heart of the Wild West, complete with Indian reservations, ghost towns, and geysers. 

The journey through this rugged landscape culminates in a heart-pounding splash, a moment that’s both thrilling and refreshing. 

It’s an experience that captures the essence of adventure and the wild spirit of the movies.

For the younger ones, the Junior Driving School is an absolute delight. 

Here, kids can swap the backseat for the driver’s seat, navigating a miniature version of Warner Bros. Movie World . 

Watching my girls take the wheel, their faces lit up with joy and independence, was a highlight of the day. 

A unique feature of Movie World is the daily parade, a spectacle not to be missed. Every day at 3:30 PM, the park comes alive with a vibrant parade that lasts until 3:45 PM. 

Characters from various movies and shows go through the park, accompanied by music and fanfare. 

It’s a dazzling display of costumes, floats, and performances, creating a festive atmosphere that captivates visitors of all ages. 

This parade is the perfect way to wrap up an action-packed day, leaving you with awe and a collection of magical memories.

Day 4: Mount Tamborine

Day 4 of your Gold Coast itinerary takes you to the serene and picturesque Mt Tamborine, a haven for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. 

The area offers a variety of trails, each providing a unique glimpse into the region’s natural beauty. 

Two notable hikes I embarked on were the Curtis Falls track and the Cedar Creek Falls track to rock pools, which offered distinct experiences.

Distance: 1.1km return

Time: Allow about 30 minutes of walking time

Experience: 

The Curtis Falls track is an enchanting journey in a wet eucalypt forest beneath towering flooded gums. 

As you walk, you’ll notice a noticeable drop in temperature, a welcome respite on a warm day. 

The path leads you into a lush rainforest, where the air is filled with the scent of damp earth and greenery. 

See the beautiful crow’s nest and staghorn ferns adorning the canopy. The track ends at a stunning rock pool, set against a backdrop of basalt rock, a glow-worm habitat. 

Be mindful that the track can get muddy and slippery, especially after rain, so checking the weather beforehand is advisable.

🚶‍♀️ Cedar Creek Falls Track to Rock Pools

This track starts from the Cedar Creek Falls lookout and takes you through a mix of eucalypt forest and dry rainforest. 

The descent to the rock pools is marked by a series of steps, ensuring a bit of a workout on your return journey. 

The rock pools themselves are a serene spot, perfect for a refreshing dip or to enjoy the tranquillity of nature. 

Unlike the Curtis Falls track, the path to Cedar Creek Falls is gravelled, making navigating easier.

Both hikes offer an excellent opportunity to connect with nature and experience the tranquillity of Mt Tamborine. 

Another must-visit trail is the Witches Falls, which offers a captivating walk through rainforest and past seasonal lagoons. It’s a journey that encapsulates the mystical feel of Mt Tamborine.

For a different perspective, visit the Tamborine Skywalk. This elevated walkway takes you high above the forest floor, offering a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest canopy. 

Or you can experience the thrill of Australia’s largest zipline attraction at the TreeTop Challenge in Tamborine Mountain.

Home to the Canyon Flyer, the country’s biggest, highest, and fastest guided zipline tour, and boasting Australia’s most prominent high ropes adventure park, it’s an exhilarating adventure not to be missed.

After your hikes, head to Gallery Walk, a charming street lined with galleries, craft shops, and cafes. 

It’s a perfect spot to find unique souvenirs or enjoy a leisurely lunch amidst local arts and crafts.

In the heart of Mt Tamborine’s Gallery Walk, a delightful lunch experience awaits at the Gallery Cafe. 

This charming spot is about the art on the walls and the art on the plate. The servings here are generous, offering great value for the price. 

The food is exceptional, with each dish crafted to please the eye and the palate. 

It’s the perfect place to refuel and relax after a morning of exploring the natural wonders of Mt Tamborine. 

As the day winds down, make your way to Main Western Road. Here, at Robert Sowter Park, you can catch an unforgettable sunset. 

It’s also a popular spot for hang gliders, adding an element of thrill as you watch them soar against the backdrop of the setting sun.

In the evening, you can enjoy an intimate encounter with glow worms , observing their luminous bodies and sticky silk threads up close.

These creatures rely on rainforests and damp caves for survival, needing consistently moist environments.

This specially crafted glow worm cave provides an optimal, controlled habitat for these unique insects, ensuring their preservation.

Day 5: Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

On Day 5 of your Gold Coast adventure, the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary offers an unforgettable experience with Australia’s native wildlife. 

One of the most heartwarming experiences here is cuddling a koala. 

This intimate encounter allows you to feel a unique connection with these adorable marsupials, highlighting the importance of their conservation.

As you wander through the sanctuary, don’t miss the Kangaroo Enclosure. You can walk amongst kangaroos in their natural habitat, observing and interacting with these iconic Australian animals. 

It’s a rare opportunity to experience wildlife in a respectful and close-up setting.

The sanctuary is also home to diverse animals, offering a unique glimpse into Australia’s rich biodiversity. 

In the Birds of Lost Valley, you’ll discover a variety of exotic birds in their naturalistic habitats. 

The Cassowary Conservation area lets you get up close with these majestic and endangered birds. 

For reptile and amphibian enthusiasts, there’s a fascinating array of species to encounter, from the iconic green iguana to native Australian species.

For those seeking a bit more adventure, the TreeTop Challenge is a must-try. With 100 challenges and 14 zip lines, it offers an exhilarating way to explore the sanctuary from above. 

The sanctuary also offers memorable animal encounters, like the Capybara Encounter or the Echidna Encounter, providing a more personal wildlife experience.

Beyond the fun and excitement, the sanctuary is deeply committed to wildlife conservation. 

Visitors can learn about these efforts and how they can contribute to protecting Australia’s natural heritage. 

Whether engaging with the animals, participating in the TreeTop Challenge, or simply learning about conservation, every moment at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary contributes to its mission of wildlife conservation and public education.

Day 6: Wet’n’Wild

On Day 6, your Gold Coast itinerary takes a splash at Wet’n’Wild , a water park that promises fun and excitement for all ages. 

This is the perfect place to cool off and enjoy some water-based adventure.

One of the highlights for children was the H2OASIS, a tropical splash zone paradise for anyone looking to dive into the fun. 

Its vibrant, playful setting is ideal for children and adults to enjoy the water in a lively yet relaxed atmosphere.

For the little ones, Wet’n’Wild Junior offers a world of fun. This area is specially designed for younger children, ensuring they can enjoy the water park experience in a safe and enjoyable environment.

It’s a delightful space where the kids can splash around and have a great time.

A family favourite was the Mammoth Falls, where we joined in for a white-water rafting experience. 

Riding together on a raft, we navigated through the watercourse’s twists and turns, enjoying the rapids’ thrill. 

It’s an exhilarating ride that brings the family together for an unforgettable adventure.

Day 7: SkyPoint Observation Deck

Day 7 of your Gold Coast journey takes you to new heights at the SkyPoint Observation Deck. 

Perched atop the Q1 building, Australia’s only beachside observation deck offers breathtaking panoramic views encompassing the Gold Coast, from the rolling surf to the distant hinterland.

SkyPoint stands at a staggering 230 meters above sea level, with the Q1 building reaching 322.5 meters. 

The journey to the observation deck is an experience, with the elevator whisking you from ground level to level 77 in just 42.7 seconds. 

The spire, a striking feature made of steel and glass, soars to a height of 97.7 meters. 

It’s fascinating to learn that the lifts use 1000 kilometres of electrical cabling, enough to stretch from the Gold Coast to Sydney.

One of the highlights of our visit was the buffet breakfast at SkyPoint Bistro + Bar , located on level 77. 

While the buffet was lovely, the spectacular view of the Gold Coast truly made the meal extraordinary. 

Imagine starting your day with a feast for the senses as you dine with the whole Gold Coast sprawling beneath you.

The SkyPoint breakfast buffet is available every day from 7:30 am to 10:30 am, with ticket prices starting from $44 per adult and $30 per child (aged 3 – 12). 

If you’re visiting for the view, entrance fees are $31.00 for an adult on weekdays and $23 for a child. 

On weekends, public holidays, and school holidays, the prices are slightly higher at $36.00 for adults and $28.00 for children.

Day 8: Springbrook National Park

On Day 8 of your Gold Coast itinerary, venture into the captivating Springbrook National Park, where nature’s artistry is vividly displayed. 

Located about 400km southwest of SkyPoint via Mudgeeraba, Springbrook is a treasure trove of natural wonders, from cascading waterfalls to ancient Antarctic beech trees.

Springbrook National Park is renowned for its stunning waterfalls and cascades and its ancient Antarctic beech trees remnants of the Gondwana rainforests. 

The park is divided into four distinct areas, each offering its own unique experiences:

This area is the park’s heart, featuring the giant Purlingbrook Falls and ancient Antarctic beech trees.

⛰️ Natural Bridge

Famous for its dramatic waterfall and cave pool, the Natural Bridge is a geological marvel formed over millions of years. 

At night, this area transforms into a magical place with one of Australia’s largest glow worm colonies.

⛰️ Mount Cougal

A mountainous region filled with waterfalls and remnants of its sawmilling history.

Springbrook National Park offers a variety of walks, waterfalls, and lookouts, each providing a unique perspective of this natural paradise:

⭐ Best of All Lookout: True to its name, this lookout offers panoramic views across Mount Warning to Byron Bay and Coolangatta.

⭐ Purling Brook Falls Circuit: This track takes you along cliffs, down to Tanninaba Falls, and through the rainforest to the majestic Purling Brook Falls.

⭐ Natural Bridge Rainforest Circuit: Wander through the subtropical rainforest to the spectacular natural rock arch formation. At night, we witness thousands of glow worms illuminating the area.

⭐ Cougall Cascades Walk: This walk leads through subtropical rainforests to viewing platforms overlooking the scenic cascades and rock pools, with a glimpse into the area’s sawmilling past.

⭐ Warrie Circuit: A journey that takes you to ‘Meeting of the Waters’ and past the triple waterfalls of Poondahra, Poonyahra, and Blackfellow Falls before ascending back to the Canyon Lookout.

Day 9: Lamington National Park

Day 9 of your Gold Coast itinerary leads you to the enchanting Lamington National Park. In this place, nature’s majesty unfolds in a tapestry of lush rainforests, vibrant wildlife, and ancient trees. 

As Australia’s largest subtropical rainforest preserve, Lamington National Park is a natural treasure, spanning over 20,590 hectares. 

It’s a sanctuary for over 900 species of plants and more than 120 bird species, offering a glimpse into a world of ecological diversity.

One of the highlights here is the Tree Top Walk at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Guesthouse. 

This unique walkway, a series of nine suspension bridges, offers an exhilarating experience fifteen metres above the forest floor. 

It’s an opportunity to see the rainforest from a bird’s eye view, making it a memorable part of any visit.

For those who enjoy a stroll, the Rainforest Circuit is a must. This short walk takes you through a warm subtropical rainforest, a haven for bird watchers. 

The diversity of birdlife here is astounding, and the peaceful ambience of the forest is truly rejuvenating.

The Morans Fall Track is another gem, leading you through a forest of booyongs, figs, and brush boxes to the Morans Falls lookout. 

The view of the gorge from here is breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista that captures the essence of Lamington’s beauty.

If you’re intrigued by ancient history, the Box Forest Track is for you. 

This path winds through forests of the world’s oldest brush box trees, some dating back more than 1500 years. Walking among these ancient giants is like stepping back in time.

For families, the Albert River Circuit is a great choice. This track takes you down to Lightning Falls, following the Albert River to Echo Falls and Echo Point. 

The walk is enjoyable and suitable for children, though caution is advised near the cliffs.

Lamington National Park is a place of wonder and tranquillity, a fitting finale to your 9-day Gold Coast itinerary. It’s a reminder of the incredible natural beauty that lies just beyond the bustling coastal cities, waiting to be explored and cherished.

Where to Stay on The Gold Coast

When planning a trip to the Gold Coast, choosing suitable accommodation is crucial for a memorable experience.

On our recent visit, we stayed at Pacific Place Apartments in Bilinga. While the place had its charms, I wouldn’t recommend it for those looking to be close to the main attractions.

The distance from hotspots like Surfers Paradise meant we faced long travel times, often 40 minutes to an hour one way, thanks to the challenging traffic in the area.

I suggest accommodations in Surfers Paradise or Southport for a more convenient and enjoyable stay.

These areas are bustling with activities and are much closer to most attractions.

You’ll find yourself right in the heart of the action, with easy access to various entertainment, dining, and shopping options.

The only exceptions are Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and the airport close to Bilinga.

However, staying in Surfers Paradise or Southport offers a more central location for exploring the Gold Coast’s many delights.

🏨 Luxury – JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa

Day 1 – Burleigh Heads

On day 1 of your Gold Coast itinerary, we’ll leave the morning open assuming you’re flying in and taking some time to get settled. Today, we’ll stick to the south of the Gold Coast and explore the Burleigh Heads area.

The Tropic on Burleigh Beach is a dining hotspot offering modern Australian cuisine with a focus on local seafood.

The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating, all with stunning ocean views. Enjoy the restaurant’s diverse range of cocktails, from classic to beach-inspired creations, alongside the flavourful food.

After finishing lunch at The Tropic Restaurant, it’s time to walk off that delicious food.

Burleigh Heads National Park is a breathtaking oasis on the Gold Coast, offering a blend of lush rainforest, rocky cliffs, and serene beaches.

The park offers two main walking trails: the Rainforest Circuit and the Oceanview Walk.

The Rainforest Circuit, a tranquil path amid towering trees and dense vegetation, offers wildlife spotting, from koalas to lorikeets.

The Oceanview Walk showcases panoramic coastal views and the city skyline, with occasional whale sightings during migration season.

While the Rainforest Circuit may not be suitable for wheelchairs and strollers due to steeper sections, the Oceanview Walk provides assisted access.

The park provides an immersive natural environment experience, highlighting the Gold Coast’s renowned beauty.

There are some great restaurant options within walking distance from the Mysa Motel. You can find Italian, Thai, Mexican, classic Australian, and anything else you might want!

We also recommend heading to a supermarket tonight before you head out on your activity tomorrow.

Pick up some yummy cheeses, crackers, fruits, vegetable sticks, and dips to snack on for your lunch or afternoon snack while you are out adventuring!

Day 3 – Surfers Paradise

Today on your Gold Coast itinerary, head to Mariner’s Cove Marina for an epic day out on the water!

Pick up some breakfast on the way to the marina and head out on some jet skis for the morning.

This jet ski adrenaline ride will take you on a guided tour through the scenic waterways and as far as North Stradbroke Island, allowing you to discover hidden gems and iconic landmarks along the coast.

When you arrive, you watch a safety video and learn about the rules of the waterways.

All participants receive comprehensive instructions and safety equipment before embarking on the jet ski safari. No licence or experience is necessary which makes it fun for both beginners and experienced riders.

Professional guides will accompany you to guide you throughout the journey, pointing out landmarks and ensuring a safe and memorable experience for guests.

We went with Jet Ski Safari Gold Coast and they were fantastic. I was a beginner and Jarryd has been on a jet ski before but our guides Pandora and Connor were magnificent catering to different skill levels.

They give you tips and advice to make your ride more pleasurable.

You don’t get too wet at all on the jet skis (that’s if you don’t fall off). It is up to you if you want to head back to the hotel for a shower before all the other awesome activities you have planned for the day.

This is such a fun adrenaline-fuelled adventure and a unique way to explore the Gold Coast’s waterways and canals.

After all that adrenaline, you’ll probably be hungry so it’s time to grab some lunch. At the Mariner’s Cove Marina, you can find lots of excellent fish and chips restaurants.

You can eat your meal overlooking the marina. Since you are on the coast, fish and chips is a classic Aussie meal that you should definitely indulge in!

Duffy Down Under Boat Hire is also located at the Mariner’s Cove Marina. After lunch, you can get straight out on a boat and explore the other side of the waterways that you didn’t see on the jet skis.

Duffy Down Under Boat Hire has several electric boats which offer a sustainable and easy way to navigate the canals and rivers.

The staff will go through the potential routes, local rules, and safety tips before you take off.

You don’t need a license to hire the boat and it’s a great way to have freedom and flexibility while exploring the Gold Coast’s waterways.

Make sure you have your snacks and drinks for this afternoon boat adventure.

Enjoy the city views, and relax with your favourite music playing through the boat’s Bluetooth sound system.

These guys offer such a unique and leisurely experience to enjoy the Gold Coast’s stunning waterways. We really enjoyed it and highly recommend it!

Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the Gold Coast from above with the team at Gold Coast Heli Tours . You can honestly see the entire city and area, with panoramic views from the Gold Coast beaches all the way out to the Hinterland.

We can not recommend this tour enough. This is a family-run company that offers thrilling helicopter rides where you will enjoy breathtaking aerial views of iconic landmarks, golden beaches, and the vibrant cityscape.

You can head out during the day or wait till sunset and see the golden light on the city.

The pilots have so much knowledge and provide commentary through your headset so you can learn about the history and culture of the area.

Nestled in the heart of the Gold Coast, Costa D’oro Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria is a charming culinary treasure.

From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm and inviting ambiance that feels like a cozy Italian trattoria.

They have indoor or outdoor dining. The night we went, it was a little chilly but they had the heaters outside and it was cozy.

Whether you indulge in their wood-fired pizzas, classic pasta creations, or delightful seafood options, every bite transports you to the streets of Italy.

The staff were so friendly and the food was delicious. If you are looking for Italian flavours on the Gold Coast Costa, check out Costa D’oro Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria.

If you are not into Italian, there are many other restaurant options in the Surfers Paradise area.

Consider switching up your accommodation tonight and stay in Surfers Paradise at the fabulous Meriton Suites .

Having stayed at Meriton Suites Gold Coast ourselves, the views are incredible and their rooms are not badly priced.

The suites are spacious, well-appointed with full kitchen setup and a balcony. The hotel is 78 floors (252 metres) so depending on your room location, you will have an excellent view.

The staff are super friendly and helpful and the location is perfectly located near the beach and various shops, restaurants, and attractions.

The tram is right behind the hotel if you need to head to another part of the Gold Coast or the airport.

Stay here for a couple of nights to be near all your activities for the next few days!

Day 4 – Surfers Paradise and Northern Gold Coast

On day 4 of your 7 day Gold Coast itinerary, you will be spending the day in the Surfers Paradise area and surrounds.

Take an early morning stroll along the beach of Surfers Paradise and witness a breathtaking sunrise that paints the sky with vibrant hues.

As you walk along golden sands, the gentle sound of crashing waves creates a soothing ambiance.

Pause for a moment to soak in the awe-inspiring beauty and feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. Watching the sunrise along the beach path of Surfers Paradise is a serene and uplifting experience that connects you with the natural wonders of the Gold Coast.

You can rent a bike and ride along the Surfers Paradise boulevard if you want! The boulevard is a picturesque route, lined with palm trees and overlooking the glistening ocean.

Gold Coast Beaches are stunning so take advantage of these mornings. Walk or ride down to ESPL Coffee in Surfer Paradise and grab breakfast to start your day.

Head to One of the Theme Parks

The Gold Coast is renowned for its world-class theme parks, offering a plethora of thrills and entertainment for visitors of all ages.

When it comes to adults seeking excitement, several theme parks stand out.

Dreamworld is the largest theme park in Australia, offering an array of thrilling rides and attractions.

From adrenaline-pumping roller coasters to heart-stopping water slides, this theme park provides an action-packed experience.

Plan to spend a full day here to fully enjoy all the rides and immerse yourself in the various themed lands.

For a splash of aquatic fun, Wet’n’Wild Gold Coast is another great theme park.

This water park has a wide range of water slides, wave pools, and lazy rivers, providing a refreshing escape from the heat.

It is fun for all ages. Everyone can indulge in exhilarating water slides or relax in the sun-drenched pools.

Spending a half-day to a full day here ensures ample time for water-based excitement.

Movie World is another popular choice for everyone, combining thrilling rides with cinematic experiences.

Explore movie-themed attractions, enjoy spectacular live shows, and embark on exciting roller coasters inspired by iconic films.

So you can choose from a number of theme parks for the day. Spend the whole day at one theme park, or choose to switch between different locations.

We have not mentioned Sea World as we are still on the fence about this theme park company. Sea World does great conservation work but they are also breeding dolphins within their facility for entertainment. We are not a fan of this and would not visit Sea World ourselves.

This is our opinion and we ask you to please your own research and decide whether you want to visit or not.

The SkyPoint Observation Deck atop the iconic Q1 Tower provides unmatched 360-degree views over the Gold Coast.

You can see the entire Gold Coast city and all the beautiful Gold Coast beaches from its elevated position of 230 metres!

For those looking to unwind, there’s a licensed bar that serves an array of cocktails, wines, and beers.

Relaxing with a drink in hand while watching the cityscape shift from day to night is an unforgettable experience.

In terms of dining, SkyPoint offers a café-style menu for those who wish to pair the view with a bite to eat.

From light snacks to heartier meals, there’s a variety of options to satisfy your palate.

Whether you’re visiting for the view, a drink at the bar, or to enjoy a meal, SkyPoint Observation Deck offers a unique perspective on the stunning beauty of the Gold Coast.

Experience the lively Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday evening from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Located along the Esplanade, these vibrant markets offer a wide variety of stalls showcasing unique arts, crafts, fashion, and gourmet food.

Explore handmade jewellery, clothing, artwork, and more while enjoying live music and savouring delicious street food from around the world.

The Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets are a must-visit destination for a vibrant shopping and dining experience on the Gold Coast.

Day 5 – Lamington National Park

On day 5 of this amazing Gold Coast itinerary, explore the stunning landscapes of Lamington National Park.

After breakfast, start the drive out to Lamington National Park in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

The journey takes you through charming towns and winding roads, surrounded by lush greenery. It is stunning, so take your time and stop at all the viewpoints.

Within an hour, you’ll arrive at the Lamington National Park, where hiking trails and stunning lookout points await. Immerse yourself in the park’s diverse ecosystem, filled with flora and fauna.

The drive from Surfers Paradise to Lamington National Park is a captivating adventure, offering a refreshing escape into nature’s tranquility.

The Rainforest Circuit Walk in Lamington National Park is a captivating journey through a lush and ancient rainforest.

The trail winds through towering trees and vibrant greenery, providing a peaceful and refreshing walk. We found ourselves mesmerised by the diversity of plant life, with ferns, moss-covered rocks, and delicate wildflowers adorning the trail.

This loop walk is very easy and will only take about 30 minutes from the Burra Binna Lodge carpark.

If you do the walk early in the morning or late in the evening, the lighting is gorgeous coming through the trees. You can hear all the native birds and you may even see a kangaroo!

Binna Burra Lodge has a restaurant there that offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The rustic restaurant offers a menu showcasing fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared by its chefs.

Binna Burra Lodge offers inside dining by the fire or al fresco on the terrace or on the deck with a beautiful view.

Elevate your stay in the area with a tiny home at Binna Burra Lodge ! This is where we stayed and it was an amazing experience.

As we arrived, we were immediately captivated by the charm and tranquility of the lodge nestled on the border of the Lamington National Park. The location of this accommodation is stunning.

The Tiny Houses are located on the Bellbird clifftop, with uninterrupted views of the Ships Stern Range with their full-sized glass wall. You can sit inside on those chilly morning or evenings or make the most of the outside deck and take it all in.

The Tiny Wild Home was so cozy and thoughtfully designed providing a unique blend of comfort and immersion in nature. Surrounded by greenery and breathtaking views, we honestly felt a deep sense of connection to the natural world.

Each tiny home was equipped with modern amenities, with comfortable bedding to a well-equipped kitchenette while still maintaining a rustic charm. It’s a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with the beauty and serenity of the natural world.

Make sure you wake up for sunrise. You will experience the most amazing sunrise from your Tiny Wild Home, even laying in bed.

From watching stunning sunrises and sunsets to stargazing under clear night skies, this place is an experience of its own.

We highly recommend staying at Tiny Wild Homes, Binna Burra Lodge .

Day 6 – Tamborine National Park

One Day 6 of this Gold Coast itinerary, continue exploring Lamington National Park before heading over to Tamborine National Park!

Do not miss this one! Waking up in the Tiny Wild Homes was a truly magical experience as the sun slowly rose over Lamington National Park.

The serene ambiance and breathtaking views created an unforgettable start to the day, filling me with a deep appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounded me.

You can have breakfast in your Tiny Wild House or head up to the Binna Burra Lodge for breakfast.

They offer a range of different breakfasts and great coffee. If it is a chilly morning, you can sit by the cozy fireplace or sit on the deck and enjoy the sun and view.

The staff were very friendly and accommodated for different dietary requirements.

The Caves Hike in Lamington National Park is a captivating trail that unveils the park’s natural wonders.

With a length of approximately 4 kms, the hike typically takes around 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and exploration along the way.

As you embark on the trail, you’ll meander through ancient rainforests, surrounded by towering trees and lush vegetation.

The path gradually ascends, leading you to magnificent rock formations and hidden caves.

These caves serve as a testament to the park’s geological history and provide a unique opportunity for exploration.

Throughout the hike, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and distant mountain ranges.

The tranquil sounds of birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves accompany you on your journey, creating a serene and immersive experience.

The days can heat up, especially in the summer, so make sure you have enough water for the hike and sun protection.

Also, there are no facilities along the trail so make sure you go to the toilet before you leave. Like any time being in nature, please leave no trace.

Take your time to appreciate the natural beauty and immerse yourself in the peaceful ambiance of this secluded corner of the park. It really is just gorgeous.

The drive to Tamborine National Park from Burra Binna Lodge will take about 1 hour to reach Cedar Creek Falls entrance. As you ascend into the mountainous region, the air becomes cooler and crisp, signalling your arrival at this lush rainforest retreat.

The well-paved roads guide you through the park, allowing you to explore its many walking trails and breathtaking lookouts.

Along the way, you will be surrounded by dense forests, towering trees, and vibrant birdlife, creating a sense of tranquility and natural beauty.

Cedar Creek Falls is a picturesque waterfall nestled in the Tamborine National Park in the Gold Coast hinterland.

The waterfall cascades down a rocky ledge into a tranquil swimming hole, inviting visitors to cool off and relax.

With its natural beauty and peaceful ambiance, Cedar Creek Falls is a popular spot for locals and tourists seeking a moment of tranquility in nature.

The walk down is well pathed with some stairs. Anyone with a bit of fitness will be fine. There is a viewing platform near the beginning of the path if you do not want to walk all the way down.

The best place to eat in the area is Rainforest Restaurant and Bar at Cedar Creek Lodge.

The tranquil ambiance and natural elements of the restaurant create a serene backdrop for your meal. Get dressed up and make a night of it.

The menu showcases a fusion of flavours using locally sourced ingredients, with options ranging from fresh seafood to succulent steaks and creative vegetarian dishes. We had a variety of dishes and they were all magnificent.

The restaurant offers inside dining or outside dining on the deck area where you can enjoy your meal amidst the rainforest garden.

They have a bar where you can grab a drink before your dinner or after.

This is another accommodation we loved and highly recommend staying here. The Glamping Tents at Cedar Creek Lodge near Tamborine National Park are for those who want a camping getaway in luxury style.

Inside the Glamping Tents, you are greeted by a spacious and beautifully designed interior.

The tent is equipped with 2 comfortable queen size beds, cozy furnishings, coffee and tea setup, lamps, an outside modern bathroom, and a lovely deck with your own fire pit and sitting area.

There are large windows that you can roll up to allow natural light to flood in.

In the evenings, you can stargaze from the comfort of your own outdoor seating area while keeping warm by the fire pit. They also have games in the tent for you to enjoy.

There is one glamping tent that has a heated swimming pool, offering a great way to relax overlooking bushland. Get disconnected from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with the natural world.

Day 7 – Hot Air Balloons, Alpacas and Back to the City

This is the last day of the Gold Coast itinerary! You will finish the morning in the Hinterland and drive to the airport to head home.

A hot air balloon over the hinterland is a must-do on your Gold Coast itinerary! We highly recommend the guys at Hot Air . They were so professional and full of so much knowledge.

You will have to get up early, but it will be worth it! As the sun begins to rise, you will get ready to embark on a thrilling adventure that will take you soaring above the breathtaking landscapes.

As the balloon takes to the skies, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of the stunning hinterland, with its rolling hills, farms, verdant forests, and picturesque vineyards.

Drifting with the wind, the pilot (Stu) points out iconic landmarks and tells you all about the area. You’ll have a bird’s-eye view of the region’s natural wonders, watching as the landscape is bathed in the warm hues of the rising sun.

The tranquility of the experience is truly captivating, offering a sense of serenity and freedom as you float above the world below.

Take your camera or phone to get some great photos. Just make sure they are attached to you somehow so you do not lose anything over the edge. The company has a camera on board for group photos also.

It’s an adventure that will leave you with a sense of wonder and an appreciation for the natural wonders that surround us. It is a great way to finish your Gold Coast itinerary.

After touch down, you may get a chance to walk inside the balloon. It was great to check out. The team will then take you to O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards to have a glass of champagne and a cooked breakfast.

After breakfast and the thrilling morning in the sky, calm your nerves by visiting with an alpaca. Located right next door to O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards is Mountview Alpaca Farm .

Mountview Alpaca Farm is a charming and interactive destination nestled in the scenic Gold Coast hinterland.

Visitors can get up close and personal with adorable alpacas by hand-feeding them and learning about these gentle creatures.

The farm provides a picturesque setting surrounded by lush greenery, offering a serene atmosphere to relax with your alpaca.

The guys at Mountview Alpaca Farm do great work. They have a few alpacas that are therapy animals and the owners take them into hospitals to visit patients.

Animals lovers will definitely have to check this place out!

As your time in the Gold Coast comes to an end, you have the option to drive back to either Gold Coast or Brisbane to catch your flight home.

If you choose to drive back to the Gold Coast, you’ll have the opportunity to soak in the beautiful coastal scenery one last time. The drive along the coastal highway offers stunning views of the Gold Coast beaches.

Alternatively, driving back to Brisbane gives you the chance to explore the vibrant capital city of Queensland before bidding farewell to this stunning region. Brisbane offers a mix of cultural attractions, bustling markets, and scenic parks that are worth exploring if you have some extra time before your flight. You could even spend the night.

Getting Around the Gold Coast

If you do not have your own wheels, there are many ways to get around the Gold Coast area. You will need a car to head out to the Gold Coast Hinterland as transport is very limited out there.

The Gold Coast has an excellent public transport system managed by TransLink , offering bus, tram, and train services.

The G:link light rail system , also known as ‘the G’, runs from Helensvale to Broadbeach, connecting several main points, including Southport and Surfers Paradise.

Surfside Buslines operate numerous bus routes throughout the region. A Go Card, a pre-paid travel card, can be used across all TransLink services.

If you prefer the convenience of your own vehicle, car rental services are readily available.

Driving gives you the flexibility to explore further afield areas like the Hinterland’s national parks.

Do note that parking, especially in popular areas like Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, can sometimes be challenging to find and may be paid.

The Gold Coast is very pedestrian and bike-friendly, with extensive pathways and bike lanes.

It’s an ideal way to explore the beachfront areas. Bike rental services are available at numerous locations.

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are also popular on the Gold Coast. They offer a convenient and often time-efficient way of getting around, especially if you’re travelling in a group or have lots of luggage.

Lastly, the Gold Coast also has a network of waterways, and taking a ferry can be a scenic and leisurely way to travel, especially around areas like Main Beach and South Stradbroke Island.

Planning your routes and transport methods in advance can help you make the most of your visit to the Gold Coast.

Getting to the Gold Coast

There are a few ways to get to the Gold Coast area. You will need a car to head out to the Gold Coast Hinterland as transport is very limited out there.

Flying into the Gold Coast is very simple. Gold Coast Airport , also known as Coolangatta Airport, is your gateway to this stunning region where there is so much to do.

The Coolangatta Airport is located in the southern part of the city. As you fly in, enjoy beautiful views of the coastline and hinterland, so try and get a window seat.

There are many transportation options, from car hire services to taxis, Ubers, and the SkyBus service, providing transfers to key Gold Coast locations. We picked up a rental car and the process was very simple and easy.

The airlines that fly into the Gold Coast airport are Air Asia, Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Qantas, Virgin Australia, Scoot, and Hong Kong Airlines.

If you can not fly direct from your destination, you may have a connecting flight through another city or you can fly into Brisbane and drive down to the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast is well-connected with several major highways and motorways. If you’re driving as a day trip from Brisbane , the most direct route is via the Pacific Motorway (M1), which takes approximately one hour.

This scenic route provides stunning views of the Gold Coast skyline as you approach the city.

If you’re coming from the south, you can take the Pacific Highway (also known as the M1 in New South Wales), which connects with the Gold Coast Highway.

This route will bring you up from New South Wales through beautiful coastal towns such as Byron Bay and Tweed Heads.

The Gold Coast Highway is a major arterial road that runs parallel to the coastline, providing access to the city’s key attractions and beachside suburbs. It’s a scenic drive with ocean views on one side and high rises on the other.

Taking a bus to the Gold Coast is a cost-effective and straightforward option. Long-distance services like Greyhound Australia connect the Gold Coast to major cities like Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, usually arriving at Surfers Paradise’s Coach Transit Centre.

From Brisbane, Translink buses offer regular services to the Gold Coast, taking just over an hour.

Upon reaching the Gold Coast, local bus services by Surfside Buslines and Translink provide easy access to popular attractions.

For regular public transportation users, consider purchasing a Go Card, a prepaid card valid on all Translink services in South East Queensland.

Check the latest timetables and plan routes in advance for a smooth journey. Taking a bus allows you to relax and enjoy the scenic journey to the Gold Coast.

From the shores of the Pacific Ocean to the stunning Eastern Desert, this route through California’s Golden Coast is perfect for those who want to experience the beauty of the open road and some of America’s most untamed areas. Experience a true American road trip that includes the sun-soaked beaches, nightlife and celebrity-infused attractions of the land of Hollywood, intriguing desert towns and unimaginable scenery. 

Preparation

You will begin by arriving at Los Angeles International Airport . We recommend approximately 16 days for this trip in order to experience each town and activity without feeling too rushed. Many of the drives between towns will be relatively short, but when you get to the eastern part of the state, the drives will stretch out a bit, so be prepared. Over the course of this trip you be traveling through two distinct geographical climates. These areas can be crowded in the summertime due to events but beware, the weather can be brutally hot. In the winter, you’re more likely to encounter likely rain but also fewer crowds  and on otherwise mild climate. This will be a trip of a lifetime, so get in, buckle up and shift that car into drive.

Golden Coast Itinerary

Land in los angeles, head to santa barbara, 1.5 hours/95 miles.

This is a shorter day for a good reason. We suggest arriving early into LA and renting your car from the airport and setting out north toward your first stop, Santa Barbara. It is the perfect town to get prepared and excited to start your road trip. With the  Santa Ynez Mountains  as dramatic backdrop, Santa Barbara has a great  Downtown , with Mediterranean-style white stucco buildings that reflect the city’s Spanish colonial heritage. Upscale boutiques and restaurants offering local wines and seasonal fare line  State Street . On a nearby hill,  Mission Santa Barbara , founded in 1786, houses  Franciscan   friars and a museum. The best place to start your Santa Barbara Tour would of course be the  Santa Barbara Visitor Center .

From Santa Barbara you are going to head north on the 101 to one of  California’s  hidden gems, San Luis Opisbo. Nestled in the heart of the  Central Coast Wine Country , SLO is the unofficial headquarters for the region, with towns like Los Osos, Morro Beach and Oceano within striking distance and well worth a visit. The   Los Padres National Forest  is juts outside of town and have numerous trails to explore the region. One can’t miss stop once you get into town is  Bubblegum Alley . Yep, its an entire alley lined with chewed bubblegum.

BISHOP PEAK

Can’t miss it:, mission plaza, visit a waterfall:, reservoir canyon, best place to get a little history:, dallidet adobe and gardens, best place to see wildlife:, the whale trail, novo restaurant, salinas and monterey bay, 1.5 hours/67 miles.

As you continue north on Highway 1 toward Salinas, you have two stops that you have to make. The first stop is in the town of  Cayucos for breakfast at   Bill and Carol’s Sea Shanty . The breakfasts here are as amazing at the name suggests. Your second stop will be in San Simeon and  Hearst Castle . Built between 1919 and 1947, Hearst Castle was the joint concept of  William Randolph Hearst , the publishing tycoon, and his architect  Julia Morgan . Listed as a a National Historic Landmark and California Historical Landmark, the castle is well worth a visit.

FORT ORD NATIONAL MONUMENT

Fresno is located in the beautiful  San Joaquin Valley , near the golden coast, and is the jewel of California’s agricultural heartland, the  Central Valley . Originally founded in 1872 as a stop on the  Central Pacific Railroad , today Fresno is a metropolitan city with a population of around 500,000. Home to  California State University , Fresno is a fun college town with a sophisticated air. One point of interest and a must visit is the  Forestiere Underground Gardens . Created in the early 1900s, the gardens consist of Roman-catacombs-inspired subterranean passages and courtyards. Fresno is a multi-cultural city with a number of  distinct neighborhoods  that highlight its diversity.  One can’t miss park is the sprawling, trail-lined  Woodward Park  is home to the  Shinzen Japanese Garden . Its a great place to stretch your legs.

THE BLOSSOM TRAIL

Located on the banks of the  Kern River , Bakersfield has an important place in the annals of American music. It all started in 1954 with  Wynn Stewart . Known as the  Bakersfield Sound , it was the first genre of country music to be significantly influenced by rock and roll, and as a result, the first to rely heavily on electric instrumentation and a defined backbeat The Bakersfield sound became one of the most popular and influential country genres of the 1960s, initiating a revival of honky-tonk music and influencing musical icons like  Merle Haggard ,  Creedence Clearwater Revival  and the  Grateful Dead . Bakersfield keeps that tradition close today with numerous honky-tonk bars and music festivals. In addition to the fantastic music scene, Bakersfield is a great outdoor town with numerous recreation opportunities located right outside of town in the  Sequoia National Forest .

Best place for a hike:

Buck owens crystal palace, best place to shop or farm local:, murray family farms, best place to see some wildlife:, california living museum, eat some basque cuisine:, wool growers, barstow and the inland empire, 2 hours 20 minutes/130 miles.

Once a small mining center and railroad town in California’s  Mojave Desert , Barstow today is known as the commercial, cultural and economic hub of the  Inland Empire . Barstow is a great starting point when touring the western Mojave Desert. Outdoor explorers, amateur geologists and hikers enjoy nearby  Rainbow Basin and Owl Canyon Campground ,  Afton Canyon , and the beautiful  Kelso Dunes .   Fancy a trip into the past? Check out the  Calico Early Man Site ,the historic  Harvey House Depot , or the  Calico Ghost Town , a restored silver mining town. Ever thought about exploring an abandoned and haunted water park in the middle of the desert? Then check out,  Lake Dolores .  After all your outdoor adventures, head to  Barstow Station . Family owned and operated since 1973, it’s a great place to stock up on supplies.

CASTLE MOUNTAINS

Named for the nearby pointed mountain peaks, Needles was founded in 1883 to support the  Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway . The city’s location along the Western bank of the  Colorado River , which serves as the California/Arizona border, was once its major draw. As in  John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath , it was an important stopping point for travelers entering the golden coast of California in search of opportunity during the  Dust Bowl  era. Today, Needles is an eclectic little desert town straddling the gap between history and the future. The first thing we would recommend doing when you get into Needles is to the  Pirate Cove Resort . It’s a great place to cool off after your road trip through the desert.

You may have heard the Coachella because of the  international music festival  that takes place here every year, but there is so much more to this remarkable area. The first is of course  Joshua Tree National Park . Named for the region’s twisted, bristled Joshua trees, the park straddles the cactus-dotted Colorado Desert and the Mojave Desert, this is a one-of-a-kind place that is well worth a full day’s visit. When you get to Coachella, get a room at the  Turtle Back Mesa .  After that, head to the  Living Desert Zoo and Gardens . It’s well worth a visit to this golden coast location.

Best outdoor experience:

Tahquitz canyon, cabot’s pueblo museum, old town la quinta, palm springs aerial tramway, best chance to see a ghost:, palm springs ghost tour, best dining experience:, through the salton sea to san diego, 3 hours 15 minutes/153 miles.

Today you heading to the Pacific Ocean, but before you do, there is one body of water that you need to see.  The Salton Sea  was formed between 1905 and 1907 when the Colorado River burst through poorly built irrigation controls south of Yuma, Arizona. Almost the entire flow of the river filled the Salton Basin for more than a year, inundating communities, farms and the main line of the Southern Pacific Railroad. In its heyday, the Salton Sea was a getaway for celebrities and the wealthy, but as the lake started to dry up, the crowds left and it now exists as a ghost town. The best place to stop to understand this geographical history would be the  Salton Sea Visitor’s Center . If you are interested in touring a winery in southern California’s golden coast, you should stop in  Temecula , the only known winery area in Southern California. Once you arrive in San Diego, we recommend staying overnight near the Gaslamp district or right by the Pacific Ocean.

 Today’s priority? Just enjoy the beautiful southern California coast. With charming, golden coast, beach towns to visit like Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Venice Beach, and Santa Monica, this won’t be difficult.  The first thing you are going to need to do though is get breakfast. Head to  Swami’s Cafe  in Carlsbad for the best breakfast west of the Mississippi. Then, take Interstate 5 north along the Pacific Coast from San Diego to Los Angeles. This scenic drive will give you the feeling and vibe of Southern California, with the lush vegetation along the coast and the crazy traffic on the freeways: two things that definitely characterize it.  Stop in Oceanside for a quick walk along the coast, then take Hwy 1 past San Clemente, to your stop for the night in Santa Monica.

In the morning, you might consider a quick run along the golden coast before heading to Los Angeles to see the world famous  Universal Studios , where classic films and television shows are brought to vivid life around you, and you might even run into some movie stars. In the evening, check out some iconic Hollywood locations, such as the  Kodak Theater  and the  Walk of Fame , where celebrities have been honored for decades with their names imprinted on glossy stone stars embedded in the sidewalk. During the evening, take  Sunset Boulevard  into Beverly Hills, then follow this scenic drive head back to Santa Monica.

The Gold Coast is 34 miles of white sandy beaches and aqua blue water fringed by a green hinterland. The Queensland weather is beautiful one day and picture-perfect the next. As a holiday destination, the Gold Coast is one of the best places to immerse yourself in Australia’s national colors: green and gold. There’s the golden sands and glitz of the Gold Coast, plus the green of the nearby hinterland, with its walking tracks in subtropical forests, national parks, and wellness retreats.

Timing A Stop On The Gold Coast

Like Florida, Australia’s famous Gold Coast has beaches and theme parks, making it a popular destination for family and multi-generational travel. To avoid these crowds, plan your visit outside of Australian school holidays and the two-week celebration known as schoolies , which is somewhat similar to spring break in the U.S.

Visiting in these quieter times means access to first-class amenities without the crowds. The Gold Coast boasts some of Australia’s best beaches, and each has its own unique vibe. Some of the best include: Main Beach, Surfers Paradise Beach, Kurrawa Beach, Mermaid Beach, Miami Beach, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach, Snapper Rocks, Kirra Beach, and Greenmount Beach at Coolangatta. Most beaches are patrolled and manned by lifeguards. For your safety, swim between the flags. The Gold Coast boasts a fit and tanned lifestyle and offers miles of ocean view walking paths, bike tracks, free outdoor fitness equipment, and over 40 golf courses . High-rise buildings offer apartments with magnificent ocean views, and there are also more private options such as glam vans and small docked yachts . The abundance of accommodation means good prices. You can book a water-view apartment with a balcony from around $100 a night.

Most tourists stay in the area known as Surfers Paradise, which has a strip of souvenir shops, but nearby Broadbeach is more sophisticated with trendy boutiques and cafes. Gold Coast meals range from eating inexpensively at local surf clubs right on the beach to dining at award-winning chef-hatted restaurants . Then, behind the high-rise buildings and the glitz of the Gold Coast is the nurturing solace of the green hinterland.

The following four-day itinerary is concentrated on some of the lesser-known Gold Coast activities that invite you to sample the green and the gold. These recommendations will help you plan your trip and inspire an itinerary for when you can travel to Australia.

Day 1: Gold Coast

A day perhaps for just coasting. Although, even if sleeping in, send your early riser off to buy fresh seafood direct from the returning trawlers. Collectively called the Fishermen’s Co-Operative , these boats are where locals and chefs source tiger and king prawns (shrimp, raw or cooked), spanner crabs, and lobster, also called Balmain bugs.

For breakfast, Bumbles is a homey house turned cafe that’s popular with locals who try to keep it their secret. Despite the buzzy name, Bumbles is in a residential area overlooking the river. Feast your eyes on the homemade cakes for future afternoon tea rewards. Or, if you just need to kick-start your day, Stairwell , a hole-in-the-wall place, has great coffee. Perhaps you could brave one of their Vegemite bagels. Ask for just a smear as the sharp taste of Vegemite takes some getting used to.

Destination Gold Coast

Now for a walk that puts the Gold Coast in perspective. The Federation Walk Coastal Reserve offers sweeping views of the linear Gold Coast coastline that spans from Surfers Paradise to Coolangatta. Start at Philip Park, opposite the Sea World entrance parking lot. The easy 4.3-mile round trip walk suits all fitness levels as there are numerous rest stops and a cafe at the end. Along this tree-lined walk, you’ll have glimpses of the ocean where you can spot sea eagles or even breaching humpback whales. The locals you spy will be at their finest: surfing, bike riding, running, and meditating.

Most of us like to hunt down shopping bargains on vacation. One of my holiday haunts is Harbour Town Premium Outlets , which has 240 outlet stores. There’s a stunning new open-air dining precinct lined with palm trees. While it’s the place for big-name international brands, it is worth noting that some, such as UGG and Oroton, started in Australia (the boots were invented by an Australian surfer and the luxury handbag company was founded in 1938 ). Or, if everyone in your party slept in this morning, head out for Kingfish sashimi and oysters served with a Thai vinaigrette at Rick Shores . The restaurant has epic views of Rainbow Bay overlooking the famous Snapper Rocks surf break. Finish off with one of Gelato Messina’s 40 freshly churned flavors of gelato and a seaside wander.

Day 2: Gold Coast Waterways

As the Gold Coast is a waterside paradise, lap it up. Try breakfast at the Palazzo Versace with its bespoke Versace furnishings. Perhaps coffee or morning mimosas beside the 200-foot lagoon pool in your very own private cabana. There are views of the marina in the distance and of the passing superyachts and boats, although you may find yourself celebrity spotting instead. I won’t name drop, but since the Gold Coast is home to Village Roadshow Studios (the largest studios in the Southern Hemisphere), Hollywood star sightings are common.

View the Gold Coast’s tall buildings from the perspective of being out at sea. Set sail aboard a luxurious chartered catamaran with Sailing in Paradise , or in whale-watching season (generally May to November), experience the wondrous sight of migrating humpback whales with Sea World Cruises or Spirit of Gold Coast’s whale watching charters. These depart right next door to the Palazzo Versace from the Mariners Cove Marina, next to Marina Mirage.

Have a late lunch at the award-winning Marina Restaurant at Southport Yacht Club . Enjoy stunning views of the club’s private 300-yacht marina while you tuck into oysters Kilpatrick, Moreton Bay bug meat (lobster) linguine, and a glass of Australian wine.

In the late afternoon, jump in the car or an Uber for a six-minute drive (or take the 30-minute walk) to the popular and aptly named Surfers Paradise precinct. Surfers, as Aussies call it, is a mecca for entertainment, beachside shopping, dining, and trendy bars. Wander along the Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets dotting the foreshore at the end of Cavill Avenue, where local artisans sell fashion items, tasteful souvenirs, knickknacks, and locally made foodstuffs. The markets are open Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday nights starting at 5 p.m.

Day 3: Burleigh Heads And Currumbin

Time to turn from the gold to the green. Burleigh Head National Park is a 30-minute drive from the Gold Coast and is free to enter. The Ocean View track is an easy 0.8-mile (one way) trail that offers spectacular views of the seaway entrance of Tallebudgera Creek, the neighboring coastline of Palm Beach, and vistas all the way to Surfers Paradise. For a swim, turn right at the fork 10 minutes into your walk via the south Tallebudgera Creek entrance to visit secluded Echo Beach. Or there’s a patrolled, lifeguarded area at Burleigh Heads Beach at the north end of the park. The other walk is the Rainforest Circuit (1.4 miles round trip). This is more challenging with 100 steps and several gradually inclined paths, but the reward is a viewing platform with unobstructed views of the southern Gold Coast.

For rejuvenation, head to Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat tucked away in the lesser-known hinterland region of Tallebudgera Valley. Partly owned by actor Hugh Jackman, it’s an impressive ecotourism-certified retreat with indoor and outdoor spa rooms, meditation suites amidst the trees, and a large elevated outdoor deck and lounge area with stunning views. It is not open for walk-ins, but you can prebook an incredible range of luxurious spa treatments for both men and women. Or, stay here in tasteful lodging including heritage cottages and villas built over the water. If staying for a wellness or detox program, they offer Qi Gong (a type of meditation), guided walks, yoga, wellness seminars, and organic meals. Note the minimum stay is two nights, which can be enjoyed as part of Gwinganna’s Graceful Ageing package .

If not spending the day at the spa, there is a lot to do in Currumbin. Freeman’s Organic Farm (normally open Friday to Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.) has a cafe with wonderful valley views, organic produce sales, and Sunday farm tours. If heading back to your coastal accommodation, then a stop at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a great place for tourists who would dearly love to hold a koala. This experience needs to be booked in advance. If you just wish to observe koalas in their treetops, then general zoo entry will suffice. Throw into this eventful day a tasting of award-winning beer at Balter Brewing Company .

Day 4: Gold Coast To Canungra

O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards with its picturesque grounds stretching alongside the banks of Canungra Creek is less than an hour’s drive from the Gold Coast. Part of this complex includes Killowen, a historic homestead serving gourmet breakfasts, indulgent lunches, and simple wine tastings at the bar. Outside options include barbecue or antipasto picnics on the lawns by the creek. For a novelty date, book one of the resident alpacas . Your assigned cutie comes with a lead so they can accompany you on a walk through the vines as you search for the perfect picnic spot.

Just 45 minutes from Canungra Valley Vineyards is O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat , which offers a host of free activities from treetop walks and feeding rainforest birds including Crimson Rosellas and King Parrots to short strolls in the surrounding 99 miles of nature trails. You could easily spend the whole day here. Paid experiences include a four-wheel-drive tour through an ancient rainforest to the mystical Glow Worm Grotto and a billy (campfire) tea and history tour. Or head to O’Reilly’s Lost World Day Spa for facials, massages, and even a unique vinotherapy session that affords vacationers the anti-aging properties and novelty of soaking in locally made wine. Meals are available on site and O’Reilly’s has the stunning Moonlight Crag deck with wonderful sunset views.

If not heading back to the Gold Coast for the night, there are 48 self-contained villas on the property. Why it’s awesome: If you’re travelling kids and are unsure what to do in the Gold Coast, there are plenty of theme parks to help you with that. And Dreamworld is the biggest of the lot! There’s something for kids of all ages. Little ones will love ABC Kids’ World and the DreamWorks experience, complete with characters from Madagascar and other family favourites. Even the most inexpressive teen will have a smile on their face (or maybe they’ll cry) on the likes of the BuzzSaw and the Hot Wheels Sidewinder!

What to do there: Where to start! Obviously, since it’s a theme park you’ll want to try all the cool rides. However, it can get pretty busy so do a bit of research beforehand and make a beeline for your favourites early. You’ll avoid the queues that way! If you get a bit tired of rides, take a break at one of the many places to eat or cafes. The Corroborree part of the park means that you can learn about Aboriginal culture and native Australian wildlife, perhaps even getting a cuddle from a koala!

Just make sure you keep topping up your sunscreen during the day, as the heat can get pretty relentless here. There’s more than just slides too. Springbrook gives you a chance to add wildlife watching, hiking, and a whole host of other activities to your Gold Coast itinerary!

What to do there: It’s good to plan a little in advance for your trip to Springbrook, as there a few things that you may not have considered bringing! First up is your swimsuit. The National Park has some of the coolest swimming spots in Queensland and you’ll not want to leave without taking a dip. Binoculars are a must-have for ornithologists, as Springbrook has diverse birdlife which you’ll be lucky to see outside of captivity! Of course, one of the best ways to see the park is on foot, so bring some comfy boots and get out onto the hiking trails!

Burleigh Heads is wedged between Surfers’ Paradise and Coolangatta (where you’ll find some of the Gold Coasts best hostels if you’d like to stay in the area), and it’s a popular spot with locals as well as tourists. Spend the day here to escape from the concrete jungle of The Gold Coast and come back feeling refreshed and recuperated!

What to do there: Where to start?! There are some fantastic swimming spots in Burleigh Heads . The protected waters are a lot quieter than those further north at Surfers’ Paradise, so you’ve much less chance of having to dodge a rogue surfboard! Another great activity is taking the walk track from Burleigh to the stunning Tallebudgera Creek. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for Aussie wildlife such as koalas, echidnas, and even the odd sea eagle!

#9 – Gold Coast Wax Museum and Chamber of Horrors – Quite the quirky place in The Gold Coast

Like the famous Madame Tussaud’s in London, it’s filled with waxworks of world leaders and some of the most famous people of our time. However, this bizarre attraction in The Gold Coast has a bit of a twist which will leave you chilled to the bone! Probably…

What to do there: After you’ve posed for photos or taken a selfie with Gandhi, Jack Sparrow, or the British Royal Family, it’s time for the chamber of horrors. In here, you’ll find Dracula, Frankenstein, and loads of werewolves. Of course. If that’s not enough, there are genuine torture devices and waxwork recreations – it’s often hard to tell them apart! If you’re a horror movie fan or looking for a touch of the macabre, don’t miss this weird Gold Coast must see!

#10 – Cable Park and Southport Cable Hut – An unknown (but awesome) place to visit in The Gold Coast!

Why it’s awesome: Just a short walk from Main Beach, you could be forgiven for not really noticing this place. And sure, it’s probably not a place to visit for the aesthetics. However, when it comes to history and feats of engineering, this little non-descript hut might just be the most impressive place in the Gold Coast. The reason it’s so special is that this hut housed the Pacific cable, which ran 4,000 miles from Australia to the US. Even more surprising is that it was laid on the ocean floor with no problems!

What to do there: Visiting the Southport Cable Hut and Cable Park is more of a quick activity. Do it on the way to Main Beach or to catch a bit of a break from the sun, sea, and sand. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting Gold Coast landmark and there is some information in the park where you can find out more. Astoundingly, this little hut played an important role in news and information being transmitted in both World War One and Two!

The Gold Coast is located 1 hour south of the Queensland capital, Brisbane. This is where we have an extremely high tourist hub and more than 10 million tourists visit each year. But, sometimes you just want to escape the city and why I have this post today on the best day trips from the Gold Coast.

I’ve been a local to South East Queensland for more than 20 years and spent many weekends and holidays exploring this area. It contains lots of hiking, adrenaline, water sports, finding waterfalls, or swimming.

So, please read on to explore these options and start planning today!

What are the Best Day Trips from the Gold Coast?

I have a huge selection of activities below, together with a specially curated Map to help get you out of your hotel room for the entire day. Whether it’s for a few hours, or several items, I’m sure there is a few things that resonate with you.

1. Lamington National Park

The Lamington National Park was UNESCO World Heritage listed for part of the Gondwana Rainforest in 1994 and is where you’ll find tours to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat . After your scenic drive, you have several different hikes on offer and a popular retreat to visit for a day trip.

The free Tree Top walk (Booyong) is a big favourite, and only 800 metres return along the suspended bridge. It consists of nine suspension bridges around 16 metres above the ground.

2. South Stradbroke Island

Can you believe that South Stradbroke Island is just a short distance from the city life? There are no cars, but it is accessed by water transportation like Boats, riding a Jet Ski , and kayaks. You also will find some nice clear waters, areas to yourself, and beautiful white sandy shores.

You can snorkel here too, but with a lacking of coral around, the underwater creatures can be very random. One popular stop would be visiting the Couran Cove Island Resort, which is located on the west side.

3. Moreton Island

There is a Ferry to Moreton Island leaving from either Pinkenba or from the Brisbane Port. Day trip tours can differ from snorkeling and exploring the wrecks, or spending the day at the Tangalooma Island Resort .

This is your chance for an beachfront escape on the worlds third largest sand island . Along with so much to do, from Snorkelling or diving the wrecks, swimming on the beach/pools, the nightly Wild Dolphin feeding or parasailing. Additionally, on land, you can enjoy the sand dunes, four-wheel driving, or having some cocktails at the bar. 

4. Whale Watching

Check out this seasonal activity around May to November, with the Annual Humpback Whale migration. Each year, some 1,200 humpbacks make an epic 5,000 km journey between Antarctica and Australia and then back again.

Therefore, you have the unique opportunity to venture out on the water and experience this marvel first hand. Enjoy a tour on a comfortable catamaran out on the open water. Ultimately, watching the Humpback whales breach the surface and hopefully put on a show.

5. Theme Parks

All the different Theme Parks are what draw thousands of families and holidaymakers to the region. You have so many Parks to choose from, with their own draw cards and unique attractions and each park will need a whole day to visit. This comes down to water slides, rollercoasters, thrill rides, animals, and plenty of other entertainment.

Purchasing passes from each individual park can be rather costly, but there are ways to save some money with Combo tickets and included transfers . This means SeaWorld, Wet N Wild, Paradise Country & Movieworld are one company, and Dreamworld, White Water World is the other.

6. Lady Elliot Island

Lady Elliot Island is one of your first points to access the The Great Barrier Reef, one of the wonders of the world. And, access to this area, comes from flights that leave Coolangatta. The trip can be expensive, but you can take advantage of the opportunity if you’re not travelling further north on your own.

A day spent at Lady Elliott Island happens to be one of best snorkelling sites , a and chance to swim with turtles, and other marine life. On land, you can explore and learn about the history of the Island, The Lighthouse, and Bird Habitat.

7. Australia Zoo

If you’re a fan of the late Steve Irwin and his family, this zoo is definitely worth visiting. It was founded by the Irwin family and still carries on their legacy today. I think it limits time with a day trip from the Gold Coast, but there are plenty of people who do it. You can even book a tour with transfers , but you definitely have more time in the park with your own car. 

The range of animals in the park has grown over the years, and I really enjoy the lemurs, elephants, and tigers. You can also get your photo taken with a koala or feed the kangaroos, which is a must in Australia! The crocodile show is always a big hit and the last time I visited, I even witnessed a poisonous snake shedding its skin.

8. North Stradbroke Island

The Island of North Stradbroke (or Minjerribah) is a little different from Moreton Island, where you have over 2000 people permanently living there. Therefore, you have plenty of options to get around, beaches to explore, places to eat and drink, public transport, and accommodation.

If you only have the day to explore , then you could start with the following. Hanging out on the beach, surfing, or completing the  Gorge Walk at Point Lookout  would all be a great start.

9. Natural Bridge

Marvel at Natural Bridge, located in the Springbrook National Park and about 1 hour inland from Surfers Paradise. This is a different kind of waterfall where you can watch from above, with the water disappearing into a big hole. Along with underneath, where the waterfall crashes into the waterhole.

Ultimately, rain is always a factor with any waterfall, but this one seems to be running all year round. You can take an easy one-kilometre walking path with a slight elevation and some stairs, but easy for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

10. Purling Brook Falls

The complete Purling Brook Falls hike is about 4 kilometres in length and will take about 2 hours to complete. The track is formed, but there is a steep elevation to get back to the car park. There is a lookout at the top to see the waterfall, but a better view below from the gully.

It’s a loop track, with the waterhole about halfway. However, the waterfall is more prominent in the summer months after the rain. It’s a beautiful walk passing through the eucalypt forest in the Springbrook Plateau and crossing over a suspension bridge.

11. Southbank, Brisbane

Enjoy this trip to Brisbane and go North for a popular entertainment district. The Suburb of South Bank is located straight across the river from Brisbane City and is visited by millions of tourists each year.

You’ll find the Arts district with Museum, the library and stage theatre. Markets are held every weekend, along with special events and festivals. A variety of food and drink options with many cafes and restaurants. Furthermore, catering for those inner-city beachgoers with the man-made, patrolled Street’s Beach.

12. Mount Tamborine

Mount Tamborine National Park is 30 minutes from Surfers Paradise and the perfect spot to include in a short road trip from the city. If you’re seeking a green change and a place to admire the Mountains, then immerse yourself in the local food and arts.

Go chasing waterfalls like Cedar Creek or Curtis Falls, soar above the sky in a Hot Air Balloon, or try some delectable wines. Additionally, there is the Tree Top challenge experience, or strolling along the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk.

13. Mount Warning

Mt Warning is located across the border in New South Wales and 1.5 hours from Surfers Paradise. It’s another activity for those Hiking fans and very challenging to those that aren’t used to elevated walks or lots of stairs.

It’s almost 9 kilometres return and requires a good level of fitness to get up. The track is nicely formed, heaps of stairs, and you might need to stop a few times to catch your breath. Once at the top, the views are amazing and well worth the effort you just put in to get there.

14. Glow Worms

You can  find the incredible glow worms  in the Gold Coast hinterland. This is possible at the Natural Bridge waterfall within Springbrook National Park (only at Night) and around Mount Tamborine (during the day). The glow worms create a magical atmosphere with their bioluminescent glow, making evening tours an enchanting experience. 

The best way to view these natural wonders is on tours with expert guides that offer fascinating insights into their unique lifecycle and habitat. However, you can see them for free (in your own time) at Natural Bridge. But please remember to bring a camera, as the sight of thousands of glow worms illuminating the dark surroundings is unforgettable.

15. Scuba Diving or Snorkelling

Snorkelling or diving in this area is a wonderful way to experience a different side of the Queensland coast – Being Underwater. Obviously, snorkelling is a little more accessible and done anywhere, but the closest I have come to any snorkelling was South Stradbroke Island, which was part of a Kayaking trip from Southport.

Apart from that, If you do have the opportunity to dive, then you are going to come across much more marine life. Learning to dive really changed my life and can open up a whole new world.

16. Kondalilla Falls

Kondalilla Falls is one of my favourite waterfall hiking trails. Located in the stunning hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, the trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and physical challenge. The hike itself is moderately difficult (with a lot of stairs), winding through lush rainforests, towering eucalyptus trees, and scenic lookout points. 

As you make your way down the well-maintained path, the sound of rushing water grows louder, culminating in the breathtaking sight of Kondalilla Falls cascading into a tranquil rock pool below. It’s a brilliant spot for a refreshing swim on a hot day, and the abundant wildlife makes it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. 

17. Scenic Rim

The Scenic Rim encompasses a range of eclectic towns, including Rathdowney, Boonah, Mount Barney, Aratula, and Beaudesert. Each of these towns offers its own unique charm and attractions. Rathdowney is known for its laid-back rural atmosphere and historical museum, while Boonah boasts vibrant arts and crafts communities. 

With its towering peak, Mount Barney is a hotspot for hikers and nature lovers. Aratula is a gateway to several national parks and offers quaint cafes and artisan shops. Beaudesert, the largest of the towns, provides a bustling market scene and a rich history tied to Queensland’s agricultural roots. 

18. Girraween National Park

If you like hiking, then the Girraween National Parks walking trails will be well worth it. There are two different hiking trails that I would recommend, and best to start them both in the mornings. Don’t forget to take enough supplies for the day including, a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water, snacks, and a good pair of hiking shoes.

The Pyramid Track is shorter of the two, extremely elevated, and if you can make it to the top, you will see some amazing views and the famous Balancing rock. Alternatively, the Sphinx and Turtle rock hike has elevated sections, but a lot easier for those that can’t do the Pyramid Track. Listen out for a mass amount of cicadas!

19. Queen Mary Falls

Queen Mary Falls , located in the Main Range National Park, is a phenomenal sight that’s easily accessible for almost everyone. The waterfall itself drops 40 meters into a lush, green valley, and the short, well-maintained walking path to the viewing platform ensures that everyone can take in the stunning views. 

For those hiking lovers who seek a bit more adventure, the trail down into the gully offers a closer look at the waterfall’s base and the surrounding rainforest ecosystem. The cool mist from the cascading water and the sweet sounds of the birdlife make this a serene and refreshing experience.

20. Winery Tours

Are you a wine lover looking for a new adventures? Look no further than winery tours (or maybe a craft beer tour)! There are tour options for small and large groups, and they can be tailored to your specific tastes.

This includes romantic tours for couples to group tastings with friends. You’ll get the chance to visit beautiful wineries, learn about the winemaking process, and taste some delicious wines.

21. Hot Air Balloon Ride

A Hot Air Balloon experience is something you’re not going to forget quickly. Expect a very early start and at least 4 to 5 hours to complete. The morning will have you witnessing the setup, blowing the balloon up, enjoying the ride, and finally, packing everything up. This all takes time, but it’s interesting to learn how it all comes together.

Unless your purchase a tour with included transport, you’re probably going to need your own vehicle, or at least hire one. This means most Hot Air balloons leave from open grassy areas and are well away from the big city’s.

22. Surfing

Have you ever wanted to learn to surf or want to find the best places to go surfing for the day? Then look no further and you have so many different beaches stretching over 50 kilometres down the city skyline. Obviously, the waves are dependent on the daily tides and wind, but you will find the locals are always out there somewhere, giving it a go.

As a suggestion, you can find some of the best surfing spots at Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Currumbin Alley, Snapper Rocks, Burleigh Point & Duranbah Beach. These are obviously not your only options and depend on how big you want the waves.

23. Mount Ngungun

Mount Ngungun is a hiking adventure that takes about 45 minutes to reach the summit, but the views from the top are nothing short of spectacular. It’s located in the Glass House Mountains, and this moderately graded hike is perfect for those looking to experience the great outdoors without committing to a full-day trek. 

The trail winds through lush forests and rocky outcrops, offering glimpses of the surrounding landscape along the way. Once at the summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the hinterland and ten other neighbouring peaks. 

24. Currumbin Sanctuary

You’re definitely going to have fun at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary . I found this to be a very good park for animal interactions and fewer cages restricting the animals. If you looking at seeing a lot of Australian animals, then this is a great place to start. Plenty of Kangaroos , Emu’s, Birds, Snakes, and so much more.

Additionally, the Lorikeet Bird Feeding happens at 8am and 4pm every day, outside the park. They are wild birds and come down from the local bushland to feed, which is free to watch, or a gold coin donation to help feed.

25. Toowoomba

Toowoomba is the largest inland city in Queensland and offers plenty to do while maintaining a charming, country laid-back feel. Known as the “Garden City,” Toowoomba is famous for its beautifully maintained parks and gardens, with the iconic Queens Park and the Japanese Gardens being top highlights. 

The annual Carnival of Flowers (September) is a must-see, drawing visitors from all over the country to witness the stunning floral displays and participate in family-friendly activities. The city’s vibrant arts scene includes galleries, theatres, and live music venues, adding a cultural flair to its appeal. 

26. Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a city on it’s own, with it’s beaches, local arts and crafts, diving at Julian Rocks and a backpacker haven. This is where you will be crossing the border and heading down the M1 highway to this well-known hippy town.

The Cape Byron Lighthouse happens to be the most Eastern Point in Australia. So, If you’re keen, there is a nice beachside, elevated hike up the mountain to visit. It’s also full of Unique shopping and dining experiences, and popular staged music festivals.

27. Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is located on the northern side of Brisbane and about two hours away from the Goldy. The  Sunny Coast is very similar to the Goldy , but there is less people and less skyscrapers. It’s known for its beautiful beaches, boutique shopping, and trendy cafes and restaurants. Notable towns on the Sunshine Coast include Noosa, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, and Caloundra, each offering their own unique charm and attractions. 

The main beaches can get quite busy during peak season, but other quieter beaches are nearby, such as Sunshine Beach and Peregian Beach. Alternatively, there are shops and  Rockpool  swimming, or you can take the scenic drive along the coast with ocean views and the possibility of spotting dolphins or whales during migration season.

8-Day Gold Coast Road Trip Itinerary — First-Timers’ Camper Van Guide for S$1.6k

Get your playlist ready because we’re going on a road trip. From iconic beaches in Surfers Paradise to intimate animal encounters, the Gold Coast is the perfect place to start. I’ve always dreamed of going on a camper van road trip. The joy of waking up to sun rays peeking through the window, with front-row seats to the best that nature has to offer. It’s more than just a means of transportation — it’s your mobile home, your window to the world, and your passport to the unmatched beauty of Queensland .

We spent eight days driving across the city and rolling hills of the Gold Coast and hinterland, exploring and living out our dream. While I’m a seasoned road tripper, camper vanning felt a little scary at first. After all, there’s a lot more to consider, from finding campsites to ensuring you have enough power and water supply, to the different add-ons for your camper van.

So here’s our Gold Coast road trip itinerary, with a summary of costs (at the end), tips, and FAQ on how you can do it too. We hope that you’ll get to experience the adventure of camper vanning yourself!

This first-timers’ camper van itinerary focuses on shorter drives not longer than an hour and showcases a taste of everything the Gold Coast has to offer — think adorable wildlife, long sandy beaches, natural landscapes, and theme parks.

Day 1: Coolangatta and Whale Watching

First up, collecting our camper van at Elanora. We booked our gorgeous CUB camper van with Rolling Playgrounds . The artwork was a consistent conversation starter with others and was such a vibe.

The owner Dan was friendly and always available to answer any questions we had. Despite the compact size, it had everything we needed — a stove, fridge, sink (that doubles as an outdoor shower in a pinch), solar panels for charging, outdoor table and chairs, comfortable bed for two adults and a child, and plenty of storage space. *Pro-tip: Check out our road trip FAQ and tips on getting your first camper van!

Set aside at least 1 hour for collection though, because an in-depth orientation is required to familiarise yourself with the ins-and-outs of the camper van.

Before heading off, we also swung by Woolworths Coolangatta to stock up on some groceries and snacks.

Whale Watching Safari

Whale watching in the Gold Coast is nature’s theatre at its best. Between May and November, 30,000 humpback whales migrate from Antarctica — breaching in glittering waters, with playful dolphins occasionally surfing in their wake.

We joined a safari tour with Cooly Eco Adventures , which used an awesome open vessel that felt like a roller coaster as we zipped across the ocean. A fellow passenger beside us was screaming with joy every time the boat sped up. It’s pretty fun but be prepared as you will get a little wet!

The team provided waterproof spray jackets, but we recommend bringing your own layers as it can get colder out on the water.

*Pro-tip: Pack some light snacks if you’d like to munch on something onboard as tea/coffee are only served before the tour.

If you’re after something more intimate, they also offer opportunities to swim with the humpback whales on a separate tour .

Cost:  AU$119  (~S$107) for a 2.5hr whale watching safari  Tour timings:  7AM, 10:30AM, 2PM (arrive 30mins prior to departure) Meeting point:  12min drive from Coolangatta Beach. Look out for a white trailer at the side of the road ( Google Maps )

After the tour, head to Coolangatta Beach to wind down and chill. It’s known for its silky white sand and blue waters so you can even take a dip too! Swing over to the nearby headland at Point Danger to catch the sunset for the perfect end to the first day.

Campsite – Kirra Beach Tourist Park (Day 1-2)

As our camper van doesn’t have its own toilet, we generally parked at tourist parks that have access to common bathrooms with warm showers every night. Kirra Beach Tourist Park was a no-frills campsite. Their powered van sites (including a powerpoint to charge your battery) are very spacious so we could easily set up our van and do our own cooking.

Day 2: Currumbin Wildlife and Adventure

We started the day meeting Australia’s most colourful (and adorable) bird species outside Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary . The native wild lorikeets displayed their loving disregard for personal space by chilling on our heads and arms during feeding, which happens twice a day!

The best part is that the entire lorikeet feeding experience is free! You won’t need an entry ticket if you don’t have time to explore the sanctuary.

As the lorikeets are wild, they can get spooked and fly off if there are predators nearby. So we suggest catching the morning feeding session as it’s less crowded, plus you have a second chance of seeing the cute birds again if you missed them in the earlier session.

*Pro-tip: Wear a hat or long sleeves to avoid being scratched by the birds!

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Now on to the main event, exploring Australia’s unique biodiversity at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary ! Home to rescued native mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians, each visit contributes towards some vital breeding and conservation programmes in the region.

The koalas were a highlight for us — I love how adorable and peaceful they look when asleep! The sanctuary treats over 500 sick or injured koalas every year, so any additional contribution helps to support their efforts. You can cuddle and take a photo with one for AU$39 or feed the red kangaroos by grabbing some feed from the kiosk.

Lunch at Tommy’s Italian

For lunch, we drove to the highly-rated Tommy’s Italian , which is set against the beautiful backdrop of Currumbin Beach!

The restaurant serves classic Italian cuisine combined with Australia’s freshest ingredients. The prawn fettuccine, pappardelle lamb ragu, and grilled calamari had complex flavours that blended well while still bringing out the freshness of every single ingredient.

*Note: Make reservations in advance as the place can get pretty packed.

TreeTop Challenge

After filling our tummies, we headed back inside Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary to try the TreeTop Challenge, which is a nice change of pace from the rest of the park!

I felt like a ninja warrior as we ziplined over crocodiles and kangaroos across the seven high rope courses. The courses range from family-friendly easy to physically demanding black diamond ones so there’s definitely something for everyone.

The entire park took us approximately 2.5 hours to complete and is a nice warm-up before moving on to more adventurous activities like Gold Coast’s renowned theme parks!

*Pro-tip: If you plan to do both the TreeTop Challenge and visit Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, opt for the TreeTop Challenge Experience Pass (AU$90, ~S$81) for an AU$30 discount.

Camper Van BBQ for Dinner

Nothing screams “camper van life” more than an evening barbeque with some beer. We gorged on some steak and kebabs for our final night at this campsite before chilling the night away under the stars. We chatted with neighbours, exchanged stories, and basically lived our best life.

If you have a little more budget, it’s always a good idea to buy a bit more food to share!

Day 3: Alpacas and Tamborine National Park

After an hour’s drive through the breathtaking hinterland of Gold Coast, we ended up at Mountview Alpaca Farm . With over 80 alpacas (yes 80) on the farm, it’s easy to lose track of time staring at their silly faces and antics!

We booked a 30-Minute Alpaca Experience , which allowed us to roam the farm with our own alpaca for some one-on-one time. Pat them, feed them, take photos, it’s all up to you.

Pick your alpaca carefully though. Our alpaca ‘Loki’ fooled us with his looks and was such a handful to guide around compared to the rest. Well, at least we didn’t get spat on!

There’s also a restaurant on the premises where you can order everything from pizza to wine and cheese.

*Pro-tip: Save some alpaca feed in order to lead your alpaca back to the pen!

Lunch at Hang Glider Launch and Lookout Point

As recommended by a friend, we dropped by this lookout point to have a picnic before heading for our hikes.

I loved how windy it was and the view of the valley below — no wonder it’s used by hang gliders as a launch site! It’s also really relaxing to people-watch and see the gliders take off one after the other. Bonus points for having proper parking and toilets too!

Hiking at Tamborine National Park

Home to ancient trees and sparkling waterfalls, we couldn’t miss out on exploring this natural beauty. Tamborine National Park has a collection of scenic treks, but if you’re short on time, here are three easy walks that we recommend. If you’re fast, you can easily do all three!

Curtis Falls & Lower Creek Circuit (2.7km, 45mins) This popular short trek through enchanting ancient trees leads you to the beautiful Curtis Falls. Great way to explore the area briefly.

Witches Chase Trek to Witches Falls Circuit (6km, 1hr 43 mins) A combination of two treks that takes you through one of the best bush walks in the national park. Traverse lush rainforests to scenic lookout points over Witches Falls.

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk (1.5km, 45mins) Go on an eco-adventure from forest floor trails to bridges 30m above the rainforest canopy and creek.

Witches Falls Winery 

After hiking, we sat back and relaxed at the nearby Witches Falls Winery . What’s cool is that they use wild yeasts (instead of standardised commercial ones) for the fermentation process in many of their wines, resulting in ‘wines with character’!

We tried the wine-tasting menu, which included six different wines over 60 minutes. Of course we loved the wild ferment series, in particular the distinctive flavours of the Wild Ferment Nero d’Avola (red wine).

For the drivers, don’t worry as there is a non-alcoholic wine tasting menu too. Buy some wine back for the evening instead 😛

Campsite – Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park (Day 3-4)

Since the iconic theme parks were up next on our Gold Coast road trip itinerary, we based ourselves at the nearby Big4 Gold Coast Holiday Park for two days. The place is affordable, with plenty of facilities like a pool, water park, basketball court, and a well-equipped amenities block (we greatly appreciated the spacious shower areas)!

Day 4-5: Dreamworld and Warner Bros. Movie World

For adrenaline junkies, no visit to the Gold Coast will be complete without visiting the theme parks.

They say that the Gold Coast’s largest theme park is an exhilarating mix of adrenaline-pumping thrill rides, captivating live shows, and interactive wildlife encounters. But to us, it was all about the rides.

From the 39-storeys-high Giant Drop to the latest 1.2km-long Steel Taipan with a G-force of 3.8, there were plenty of rides that kept our adrenaline pumping for the entire day. I loved the Giant Drop so much that I actually took it three times! Please don’t do it back-to-back like me though 🤢

Warner Bros. Movie World

But if you only have time for one theme park, Warner Bros. Movie World is the one. Other than sporting themed rides, film characters, and stunt shows from the DC and Warner Brothers universe, the park is constantly evolving with new events and rides. The Flash: Speed Force roller coaster is opening in 2024!

As a DC fan, I felt like a kid again seeing my favourite comic book characters come to life. For the rides, Superman Escape and DC Rivals HyperCoaster literally blew our minds with speeds of over 100km/h.

You don’t have to worry about bad weather too! Even though it was raining when we went, there were still plenty of rides open — with indoor shows, merchandise shops, and Superhero/Villain interactions in the sheltered areas.

As shared above, there’s a hack to get free tickets to Warner Bros. Movie World! For day five, book a Farmstay and Theme Park package at Paradise Country. The package allows you unlimited access for two adults and two children to Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World, Wet’n’Wild and Paradise Country during your stay.

The van sites have the usual amenities and also let you take part in simple sunrise farm stay activities (cow milking, cow feeding, collecting fresh eggs and more) at Paradise Country the next morning.

Day 6: Surfers Paradise

With skyscrapers fringing the long golden beaches, Surfers Paradise is the iconic landmark of the Gold Coast. And the best way to take it all in is to catch some waves at one of the most famous beaches in the world.

We took a 2-hour long beginner class with the super professional team at Go Ride A Wave . As you can see in the picture, RJ looked like he was rocking it. If you’re an experienced surfer, you can also rent surfboards and wet suits from them.

Lunch at Betty’s Burgers & Gelato Messina

Swing by Betty’s Burgers for some classic American grub like beef burgers and milkshakes before topping it off with the best gelato in the region.

Gelato Messina has 40 unique flavours prepared from scratch, and they even own a farm that produces the milk required for their gelatos! Be sure to try the rotating weekly specials — some of their hall of fame flavours include “You Cannoli Live Once” which is made from creme patissiere gelato with pistachio fudge, pistachio praline and cannoli shells.

HOTA, Home of the Arts

Gold Coast’s vibrant cultural heartbeat. HOTA is the hub for all things creative and artistic. It’s a really fun place to spend the afternoon, with plenty of free (or paid) exhibitions and events that showcase a diverse blend of visual and performing arts.

Sunset at SkyPoint Observation Deck

We ended the day by catching the sunset from the tallest building on the Gold Coast. Perched atop the Q1 Building, SkyPoint Observation Deck offers a 360° panoramic view 230m above sea level. *Pro-tip: Pick your spot early because it gets really crowded once the sun sets!

For the adventurous, there’s also a SkyPoint climb for an even better view.

Dinner at Miami Marketta

Housed at a refurbished mechanics warehouse, Miami Marketta was a nice change of environment from restaurants, cafes, and cooking out of our own camper van!

Open three times a week, this vibrant night market is an eclectic mix of global street food, live bands, and good vibes. I recommend trying cuisines from all over the world — we had Korean fried chicken, Spanish paella, and sinfully rich burgers.

Campsite – Tallebudgera Creek Tourist Park (Day 6-7)

For our final two nights, we based ourselves at a tourist park just off the serene Tallebudgera Creek — our next destination!

Day 7: Burleigh and Tallebudgera Creek

After a couple of action-packed days, we decided to slow down with an easy nature walk from David Fleay Wildlife Park to Burleigh Heads National Park . We took a short Uber ride instead of driving from our campsite so we didn’t have to backtrack to collect our vehicle.

Start at David Fleay Wildlife Park and walk along Tallebudgera Creek. There is plenty of wildlife like birds, and if you’re patient like us, you can even spot hundreds of crabs walking past you during low tide.

After the hike, we stopped by Burleigh Beach Kiosk for some basic fish and chips while watching surfers catch waves at Burleigh Hill.

There’s also a yummy gelato place nearby at Burleigh Gelato Co (you won’t regret trying the biscoff flavour), with plenty of international restaurants in the same area.

Day 8: Flight Home

Before returning the camper van, we made a final stop at Pasture & Co. for breakfast. The organic Leaf & Berry Coffee has a unique flavour profile, and I absolutely loved the Tempura Cauliflower with aioli that had the perfect amount of spice.

Pasture & Co. is located inside Ground at Currumbin , which is an Eco Village with an organic grocer and a bathhouse where you can relax in mineral-enriched pools, saunas and spa baths.

Camper Van Road Trip FAQ & Tips

1) what camper van should i get.

For first-timers, I recommend a compact camper van that fits two adults comfortably. It’s about the size of a big SUV, and more or less allows you to drive anywhere. That way you can reach remote or less-accessible places compared to a bigger camper van.

If you are taller or bigger built, Rolling Playgrounds has a larger camper van that is taller and includes a standing shower. The height limit prevents you from getting into some car parks, but the overall size is still manageable.

For larger groups, you can consider a Caravan or Motorhome that can typically sleep up to six people. However, if you’re new to this, I still recommend renting separate smaller vehicles for safety.

2) Can I camp anywhere? And where can I park my camper van ?

The official answer is no, you cannot camp anywhere. But there are many easily accessible places to camp at! Rest Areas: There are over 450 rest areas throughout Queensland — these are free places where you can park and rest for up to 20 hours. While you can sleep overnight inside your camper van, you cannot set up furniture or tents outside. Campsites: There are both free and paid options. Paid options typically come with power supply, water, and access to shared bathing facilities and kitchens. More premium campsites can have ensuite bathrooms for a little more privacy.

With regard to parking, our compact camper van allowed us to park anywhere. If you opted for a bigger vehicle, just make sure it fits within the parking lot.

3) Is it easy to cook?

Yes and it was really fun! Our CUB camper van had all the essentials (basic condiments, cutlery, cooking utensils), so the only thing to think about was what to cook.

There are plenty of affordable supermarkets around (thank you Woolworths) and honestly, Australia’s fresh produce is the best. Plus, kicking back after a day of exploring with BBQ and a beer in hand gave us a big sense of fulfilment compared to just eating out!

4) Is driving a camper van safe?

The Gold Coast is generally really safe, but please don’t leave your valuables within sight if you leave the vehicle. We made sure to always draw the curtains and triple-checked that doors were locked even though the camper van had an auto-lock function.

When going on a camper van road trip, be realistic with your own driving abilities. While there are more options for manual transmission vehicles, please opt for automatic transmission if you’re not comfortable driving overseas as it can get stressful driving a bigger vehicle. And please stay below the recommended speed limits. Go slower if you have to because safety is sexy 😉

5) Do you need any special licences or permits?

Not at all. A Singapore Class 3 driving licence (or equivalent) is sufficient. Singapore Driving License holders also do not need an International Driving Permit. This is mainly required for driving licences that are not in English.

Travel Essentials for Your Gold Coast Trip

Travel documents:  Visitors to Australia must apply for an  Electronic Travel Authority visa  (subclass 601)* via the  Australia ETA app for AU$20. The approval took a couple of hours for us, but it’s probably best to do this upon confirming your flight details.

*Note: This applies to  ETA-eligible passport holders , including Singapore.

Connectivity:  We bought a 40GB SIM card from Optus (~S$28) with delivery to Singapore. If you didn’t plan ahead, there are kiosks at Gold Coast Airport selling Telsim SIM cards for 28 days at AU$40 for 10GB.

Insurance:  TravelCare from ~S$40.8/pax  for eight days

Transport: If you plan to spend more time on the Gold Coast without a car, the GoExplore card is a great way to get around. For AU$10 a day, you get unlimited rides on buses and trams. This can be bought at most kiosks around the city and the airport.

Australia may seem expensive, but it’s possible to still manage your budget while experiencing the key highlights. Gold Coast Itinerary For Solo Travellers

Travelling solo is the ultimate freedom. You can go wherever you want, whenever you want at your own pace, without having to accommodate anyone else's schedule or preferences. There's no shortage of incredible solo adventures and unique experiences to be had on the Gold Coast. And since we were recently voted in the Top 10 Most Welcoming Cities on earth by booking.com, you can be confident you’ll get a warm welcome from the locals. The only thing we love more than this special part of the world is sharing it with others. So come as you are, come on your own and discover why the Gold Coast is the ideal destination for solo travellers.

Morning:  Get your day off to a cracking start with a leisurely bike ride along the beautiful beachside cycle path that runs from Coolangatta in the south all the way up Paradise Point in the north. The Darren Smith Memorial Route is 48 km all up but you don’t need to do it all. Hire a bike from Kool Bike Hire in Coolangatta  (choose from a cruiser, mountain bike or eBike) and set out north, stopping for a swim and a bit of breakfast at one of the cafes you pass along the way. At Currumbin, the route takes you inland along the creek before joining the coastline again at Burleigh, where it’s a smooth, mostly flat ride up to Miami and Mermaid Beach. There are plenty of pretty, shady spots to stop and take a breather and soak up the stunning coastal vistas that the Gold Coast is famous for.

Noon: After all that exertion it’s time to chill out and fill your cup with some sublime self care at Earth & Skin Organic Day Spa  in Mudgeeraba. When you step through the door , you’re enveloped by a sense of serenity, only enhanced by natural decor, soothing music and leafy plants. The treatment rooms are like a cocoon of calm and you’ll sink into a state of bliss under the hands of their highly skilled therapists, during one of their organic facials, signautre massages or body treatments. All products used in their treatments are chemical-free, cruelty-free and organic - gentle on the planet and fantastic for your skin. 

Night:  As a solo traveller you get used to eating on your own - after a while it doesn't feel weird anymore. But if you’re keen for some company and camaraderie while you dine, sign up to a cooking class at Icon the Cookery Schoo l at Robina Town Centre . They offer a variety of classes including Greek, Moroccan or Spanish cuisine and night classes run from 6-9pm (check the class schedule on their website for dates). Their friendly and talented chefs will guide you through the process as you learn new kitchen skills, cook a fabulous meal and enjoy the culinary creative process. It’s a great atmosphere for making connections and having fun - and since you made it yourself, the food is sure to be first class. 

Morning and Noon:   Jump aboard a Southern Cross Tours mini-bus for a full day tour exploring Gold Coast’s gorgeous Hinterland with a small group, where you’ll be made to feel like a friend. The Mount Tamborine  Tour takes you on an adventure around the quaint mountain top village and surrounds and you couldn’t be in better hands. Throughout the experience, your guide will share stories and local knowledge about the places you visit as they show you around some Hinterland highlights. The drive up takes you through some stunning scenery with stops at mountaintop lookouts where the views will leave you speechless. You’ll meet passionate local producers and t aste locally grown produce at lunch and try the region’s best coffees and award-winning spirits. Entry is always free but check the website for regular ticketed events and performances from touring Australian and international acts - Marketta does double duty as one of the city’s best live music venues.

Morning: Pack your towel and discover the aquatic adventures waiting on Gold Coast’s waterways . The numerous creeks, canals and lakes spread across the city provide plenty of opportunity to make a splash . Relax and cruise around at a leisurely pace on a paddleboard, kayak,  picnic boat (self drive electric boats that you don’t need a skipper's licence to drive) or a sailing cruise. If you’ve got the need for speed and prefer more action-packed pursuits, take your pick from jet ski tours, jet boat tours, parasailing or hydrofoiling. And if all of that sounds like it belongs in the too-hard basket, just take your towel down to Tallebudgera Creek  and bask on the banks and swim in the sparkling water. 

Noon: Shout yourself lunch at one of the iconic surf life saving clubs  that line the coastline - there’s nearly one in every suburb between Coolangatta and Southport. You can enjoy a budget friendly meal (Chicken Parmi anyone?) and a refreshing drink while enjoying ocean views from the alfresco balconies that are so close to the sand you can hear the waves breaking. A quintessential Queensland experience that should definitely be on your to do list.

Night:  Unleash your inner artist and have a damn good time doing it with Pinot & Picasso art classes. It’s a paint and sip experience that everyone can try - no artistic abilities required! Take on some basic techniques of painting as your host guides you through step by step instructions. The creative process is enhanced by sipping on your favourite drop as you fill your canvas with colour. It’s a very enjoyable, social experience and you’ll be able to take home your very own masterpiece as a souvenir of your Gold Coast holiday. Choose from two locations in Palm Beach and Broadbeach.

Portugal is an ideal destination for a scenic road trip. The roads are generally in good shape, and the nation’s relatively small size allows you to see a diverse array of attractions, even if you have only a few days to spare. Throw together an Iberian soundtrack, and you're all set to hit the open road in Portugal .

Where you go will depend on your interests – you can plan a trip focussing on beach-hopping, seeing UNESCO World Heritage sites or drinking in the great views of the vineyard-covered Douro Valley. And backcountry lanes will take you to places you simply couldn’t reach without a car, including wild cliff-backed beaches, remote mountain villages and lone promontories perfect for watching the sunset over the sea.

Here are seven of the best road trips you can take in Portugal.

1. Coastline of the Alentejo and the Algarve

Best road trip for beach lovers

Vila Nova de Milfontes–Vila Real de Santo António, 320km (199 miles), 2-3 days 

Portugal’s southern coastline offers an almost Mediterranean idyll with scents of pine, rosemary, wine and grilling fish drifting over some absolutely stunning beaches. However, since this is the Atlantic rather than that sheltered sea, you can also count on seriously surfable waves, important maritime history and some great wildlife-watching opportunities. This drive takes in some of the finest beaches in the region as well as intriguing towns with tightly-knit, North African-inspired street plans. 

Highlights include the sandy paradise of Praia da Amoreira in Aljezur , the hulking and forbidding fortress of Fortaleza de Sagres and the vibrant, nightlife-loving town of Lagos . You can also ditch the car for the day and take a ferry ride to Ilha Deserta, a long, undeveloped island with a picture-perfect beachfront. The drive ends at the Portuguese border town of Vila Real de Santo António. If you’re not ready to quit, however, take a look around on the Spanish side. Seville is only 150km (93 miles) up the road.

2. The Central Coast

Best road trip for surfers and seafood fans 

Praia do Guincho–Aveiro, 330km (205 miles), 2-3 days

If endless crashing surf sounds like your idea of heaven, you’ve come to the right country. Get ready to ride the big ones on Portugal’s wild, wave-lashed west coast. This Atlantic strip is an alluring mix of first-rate (and inexpensive) surf camps, gleaming white towns and villages with authentic seafood restaurants, golden beaches fringed by dunes and pines, and memorable sunsets.

Surfers and kitesurfers of all levels will be in their element in the sparkling Atlantic surf, while the small towns along the coast make great stops for seafood feasts and après-beach cocktails. Highlights include the popular beach town and surfer hotspot of Peniche , the gorgeous swoop of sandy beach in Foz do Arelho and the big-wave town of Nazaré .

You can also take a boat ride through the sparkling canals of Aveiro – Portugal’s answer to Venice – and look for wildlife in the dune-backed coastal wilderness of the Reserva Natural das Dunas de São Jacinto .

3. The Douro Valley

Best road trip for wine lovers

Porto–Miranda do Douro, 358km (222 miles), 3 days

The Douro is a little drop of heaven. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed region offers some of Portugal’s most evocative landscapes with mile after swoon-worthy mile of vineyards spooling along the contours of its namesake river and marching up its terraced hillsides. Along seemingly every road, fabulous food, sumptuous wines, medieval stone villages, palatial quintas (countryside villas) and postcard views beckon.

Stop by the picturesque terraced vineyards at Quinta do Crasto or sample the world’s best port wine amidst the rolling hills of Pinhão . Just 4.5km (2.8 miles) from Pinhão is the stunning Casal de Loivos and its fine miradouro (viewpoint). From here, the uplifting view presents the Douro in postcard format, taking in a full sweep of stone-walled terraced vineyards, stitched into the hillsides and fringing the sweeping contours of the valley, with the river scything through it all.

4. North of Lisbon

Best road trip for UNESCO World Heritage sites

Lisbon–Tomar, 230km (143 miles), 1-2 days 

This drive takes you from Lisbon , Portugal’s romantic capital, through landscapes softened by cork oaks and pines. Before leaving the capital, stop at Belém , where you can see two architectural icons (and UNESCO listed sites) in one stop – the 16th-century Jéronimos Monastery and the equally majestic Tower of Belém , offering memorable views over the Tejo River. Be sure to pick up what could be the world’s best custard tart before leaving Belém.

Next up is Sintra , a village with palaces, whimsical mansions and enchanting woodlands, plus some enticing places to stay for the night.    

From here, you’ll head to a trio of stunning architectural monuments – all UNESCO World Heritage sites. At Alcobaça , you can wander the corridors of one of the finest monasteries in Iberia. About 30 minutes northeast, you can gape at the Gothic grandeur of Santa Maria da Vitória , yet another monastic masterpiece. The most mysterious site of all is in Tomar , home to the magnificent Convento de Cristo , built by the Knights Templar. 

5. The Minho

Best road trip for history lovers

Guimarães–Peneda, 217 km (135 miles), 1-2 days 

Portugal’s northwestern corner was made for road-tripping with splendid medieval cities, spirit-lifting pilgrimage sites and dune-flanked Atlantic beaches. Begin this road trip in Guimarães , where Afonso I, Portugal’s first king, was born in 1110. This UNESCO World Heritage site hides one of the most exquisitely preserved medieval centers in the country. Just north of Guimarães, you can explore the ruins of Citânia de Briteiros , a Celtic settlement founded more than 2,500 years ago.  

The Minho’s biggest town is Braga , an important center of Portuguese spirituality – home to the country’s oldest cathedral as well as Roman ruins and flower-trimmed plazas dotted with outdoor cafes. The Costa Verde’s biggest stunner, Viana do Castelo , offers a double shot for visitors in the form of medieval architecture and gorgeous beaches, while Ponte de Lima features the finest medieval bridge in all of Portugal – the 31-arched Ponte Romana . End the journey by taking walks amid the rocky hills and ancient stone villages of the Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês , Portugal’s most impressive wilderness reserve. 

6. The Alentejo

Best road trip for soulful, off-the-beaten-path adventures

Évora–Monsaraz, 360km (224 miles), allow 3 days

If you’re looking for the heart and soul of Portugal, head to the Alentejo , a region of clifftop castle towns, traditional villages and rolling plains covered in vineyards and olive groves. Start off in the beautifully preserved town of Évora . Here you can feel the centuries wind back while visiting medieval monuments , a chilling bone chapel and Portugal’s finest Roman temple . A short drive beyond the city gates, you can search for ancient symbols on the Cromeleque dos Almendres , Portugal’s most important megalithic site. 

You’ll leave the crowds behind as you head to Estremoz and Vila Viçosa, two photogenic towns where everything seems to be made of marble (visit the quarry nearby to see why). Further north, you can explore Marvão, a clifftop village with sweeping views over the sun-baked countryside. You can go on some surprising adventures nearby, including taking a spin along an abandoned railway line with Rail Bike Marvão . Looping south, you’ll ascend to Monsaraz , yet another mesmerizing hilltop village with a medieval castle and more astonishing views.

7. The Portuguese Highlands 

Best road trip for mountain adventures

Coimbra–Viseu, 390km (242 miles), 2-3 days 

This wide-ranging trip takes in many of Portugal's highlights, from a buzzing historic university town to stern borderland fortresses, intermingled with picturesque villages and the natural majesty of the Serra da Estrela mountains. The journey starts in Coimbra , a hilly city that’s home to one of Europe’s oldest universities. Grand views await in Monsanto, a stunning village that towers high above the surrounding plains. A stroll through its steep streets, lined with stone houses that seem to merge with the boulder-strewn landscape, is reason enough to make the drive.

Dramatic views come with every turn on the uphill drive into the Serra da Estrela, where you’ll find Portugal’s highest summit – 1,993m (6,539ft) Torre. Enjoying a spectacular natural setting cradled at the foot of the beautiful Vale do Zêzere, the lofty village of Manteigas is a great base for mountain walks. Here, craggy ridges and forest-draped slopes dominate the horizon in all directions. 

End the road trip in the well-preserved center of Viseu . This historic city is a delight to explore with its cobbled streets, meandering alleys, leafy public gardens, and its central square graced with flowers and fountains.

The Gold Coast's star attraction is its beaches, including the world-renowned stretch of sand at Surfers Paradise. Beyond the beaches, discover laid-back neighbourhoods, a booming culinary scene and the Gold Coast's famous theme parks. And be sure to leave enough time for a trip into the subtropical hinterland for rainforest walks and waterfalls.

The Gold Coast can be reached by international and domestic air travel into two nearby airports.

• Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is 30km (19mi) from the city and services domestic and international arrivals
• Brisbane International Airport (BNE) is 80km (50mi) from the city and services domestic and international arrivals
• Once you have landed at either airport, you can easily hire cars or catch taxis, rideshares and shuttle services to the city centre

The Gold Coast is serviced by a variety of dependable trains, buses, taxis and ferries. When using public transport, be sure to get a go card as this electronic ticket can be used for transport services in South East Queensland.

With about 300 sunny days a year, you're likely to get good weather on the Gold Coast any time you visit. Soak up the tropical rays of summer or enjoy crisp winter days with cooler mornings and evenings. Although the climate here is temperate, expect the hinterland areas to be cooler than the beaches.
