The French’s favourite tourism brands in 2021

What are the French’s favourite tourism brands ?

Looking at the last two rankings, the tourism companies most appreciated by French travellers and tourists are not always French.

While we’ll have to wait until October 2021 to find out the results of the 2020 Travel d’Or ceremony, the 2020 edition already had its share of surprises.

Another ranking is that of Yougov, which mixes all sectors. The tourism players are making their presence felt and one of them even takes first place on the podium.

The Travel d’Or awards distinguish the French people’s favourite tourism companies

Marques tourisme récompensées Travel d'Or

Eventiz Media Group is the leading media group for digital tourism and organizes the annual Travel d’or ceremony. This event was created by Frederic Vanhoutte, the founder of EMG, in 2009. At the time, the aim was to reward travel websites that had yet to establish a reputation.

Today, the tourism sector has changed a lot and travellers are using more and more the web to prepare their stays. Thus, the Travel d’Or award now judges tourism companies on all channels.

The principle? For one month, French internet users vote for their favourite tourism brands. The jury then decides on the results.

The 2020 edition was originally scheduled to take place on March 24, a few days after the lockdown began. The ceremony has been moved and we will have to wait until October 1 to find out the winners from among the more than 350 participating brands in 11 different categories.

In the meantime, let’s take a look back at the 2019 awards, as defined by over 212,000 voters.

  • Hotel : Lux Resorts & Hotels
  • Tour operator: Club Med
  • Travel agency: Lidl Voyages
  • Outdoor accommodation : Yelloh Villages

Yougov survey announces most recommended tourism brands

Yougov is an international Internet-based market research company. It has a database that is updated daily by conducting surveys among Internet users. The ranking is carried out with a tool that tracks brands in real time by asking Internet users if they would recommend the brand to their friends and family.

In 2019, it gives the results of the brands most recommended by consumers across all sectors. A tourism brand takes the lead in the ranking: the Puy du Fou.

Le Puy du Fou, number 1 in the Yougov ranking

The amusement park has been a success since its creation in 1977: each year it attracts more than 2 million visitors. The Middle Ages are told in a spectacular way and seduce families and lovers of medieval history. There are even annual passes for the most enthusiastic. This park has found its audience. The model is beginning to spread in Europe, since Le Puy du Fou, the favourite brand of the French, has just been exported to Toledo.

Other winners in the tourism sector

In 5th and 6th place in the survey, Singapore Airlines and Emirates took the lead.

On the top 3 brands that grew the most between 2018 and 2019 is SNCF at number 1 and Air France at number 3. Two French companies that improve their reputation year after year.

Tourism has seen some real shocks in 2020 and businesses have had to reinvent themselves to stay in the minds of the French.

As a  communications agency specialising in tourism , we are looking forward to the Travel d’Or awards in October to find out which brands are the French people’s favourites. It seems that responsible actions are valued for a more sustainable tourism.

Best French Luxury Brands

The French have gifted the world with some of the biggest names across various fashion industries, be it Cartier for jewelry, Chanel for fragrances, or Louboutin for heels.

This list of French luxury brands pays tribute to some of the most iconic names in the luxury space while giving you a glimpse into their journey to the top.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cartier Official (@cartier)

In 1847, Louis-François Cartier founded the eponymous jewelry and watch Cartier brand that is now one of the oldest, most prestigious, and coveted luxurious French brands.

The brand quickly made a name for crafting stylish, high-end, and high-quality jewelry favored by celebrities and royalty alike.

Some of the prominent people who have adorned Cartier jewelry include Napoleon III’s wife, Eugenie, who commissioned a Cartier necklace, and Jackie Kennedy (former First Lady of the United States) who wore their tank watch, which was designed by Louis Cartier himself in 1917.

Owning a Cartier ring, bracelet, watch, or necklace is symbolic of having a prized possession that will be handed down for generations — at least for some people. In fact, Cartier creates some of the most luxurious French watches .

The brand’s most popular piece is the Love Bracelet in case you want to treat yourself.

2. Christian Dior

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dior Beauty Official (@diorbeauty)

Among luxurious French designer brands, a name that stands out is Christian Dior (commonly known as Dior), established in 1946 by French fashion designer Christian Dior.

Over the years, the fashion house has not only redefined women’s wear but has also groomed some of the biggest names in the industry.

The Dior house’s creative directors and designers have gone on to make a name for themselves, and a classic example of this is Yves Saint Laurent, who took over from Christian Dior himself.

The Maison also diversified into handbags, accessories, makeup, and fragrances which have all contributed to shaping the world of luxury beauty and fashion as we know it today.

Though Dior ventures in many types of luxury goods, the most popular is its Miss Dior perfume which is still very much a hit to date though it was created in 1947. It is actually one of the most famous French perfume brands .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @chanelofficial

Founded in 1910 by Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel, Chanel is one of the most iconic luxury French brands making quite a name for itself over the years.

But did you know that the brand started by crafting and selling hats? Yes, Coco was a milliner before becoming the most famous fashion designer in the world who infiltrated the fashion industry at a time when the industry was run by men.

After finding success in dealing in hats and later sportswear, Channel expanded her creativity and designed her first haute couture collection.

From haute couture in boutiques and runways to comfortable but timeless pieces for daily wear, Chanel started creating inspiring collections of all kinds.

The Maison later expanded their portfolio to include fragrances, handbags, makeup, and footwear. Their iconic Chanel No. 5 transformed the perfume industry and is still a hot favorite among women.

On top of this, the brand also created the little black dress which became an instant success and has since then become a trend almost every woman embarks on.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lanvin (@lanvinofficial)

One of the oldest surviving French luxury fashion houses, Lanvin , is also one of the most famous French brands.

It was established in 1889, and much like Chanel, this brand was also a hat shop before branching out into fashion, which blossomed from its founder, Jeanne Lanvin’s love of designing outfits for her daughter, Marguerite.

Soon after, she realized that most people bought her children’s clothing compared to hats, so she switched gears and concentrated on clothing for children and women.

In addition to children’s and women’s clothing, the brand started designing men’s daily wear and lingerie.

But this wasn’t enough for Lavin’s creative eye! The brand ventured into perfumes and created one of the best fragrances at the time, Arpège .

Lanvin also quickly rose to fame for its 18th-century-styled full-skirted gowns and ball dresses in their signature elegant and feminine designs. Their gown dress style eventually came to be known as Robes de Style.

Today, the brand also sells bags, shoes, accessories, and perfumes.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hermès (@hermes)

Hermès was one of the first few French luxury goods companies to be established in France.

What started in 1837 by Thierry Hermès as a leather goods company creating harnesses and saddles for the rich carriage owners in Europe later expanded into making bags, ready-to-wear clothes, perfumes, accessories, jewelry, and watches when Émile-Maurice (grandson of Hermès) took over the business.

Over the years, the brand has created iconic pieces but the most famous is the iconic Birkin bag inspired by Jane Birkin, a fashion icon of her time followed by the Kelly bag inspired by American actress, Grace Kelly.

Today, the Birkin bag has gained the stature of not only being the most expensive handbag in the world but also the most desired in that most celebrities and famous people join a months-long waitlist just to get their hands on it.

Although it has become a collectible item, its practical “fits-everything-in-it” USP still works for people today.

6. Givenchy

View this post on Instagram A post shared by GIVENCHY (@givenchy)

House of Givenchy was established in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy, mentored by none other than Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga.

The brand is known for its iconic relationship with Audrey Hepburn, Givenchy’s lifelong friend, and muse. She collaborated with the brand on multiple occasions and remained a loyalist.

Audrey’s Little Black Dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s was one of the most iconic dresses created by Givenchy.

He even formulated a fragrance for her called L’Interdit , which she wore long before it was released to the public. To date, it is one of the most popular perfumes ever sold worldwide.

Besides haute couture, the brand diversified into creating men’s clothing and ready-to-wear clothes for women. Eventually, it became a part of the French luxury conglomerate LVMH.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chloé (@chloe)

Chloé is one of the most famous Paris luxury brands, especially known for its gorgeous feminine luxury prêt-à-porter designs.

It was established in 1952 by Egyptian-born Parisian designer Gaby Aghion and has been helmed by some of the most talented and renowned creative directors in the industry, like Karl Lagerfeld, Martine Sitbon, and Stella McCartney.

Like Gaby’s vision of providing items that will make people happy, its the bohemian and romantic styles of Chloé’s collections that appealed to its audience — the modern Parisian woman.

In the early 2000s, Chloé also ventured into creating luxury handbags, retaining the same design style as its clothing collections. The most popular are the Paddington bag and the Marcie saddle bag .

The brand counts celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Natalie Portman, and Katie Holmes as its fans.

8. Christian Louboutin

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Christian Louboutin (@louboutinworld)

Christian Louboutin created one of the most recognizable and luxurious French brands for footwear when he launched his eponymous brand in 1991.

His creation of the iconic red-lacquered soles which have become favorites among the elite came from his rebellious nature of wanting to do something that is against the norm.

Louboutin recalls seeing a sign from Africa when he visited a museum that forbid women from wearing stilettos as they would damage the wooden floor and that’s what inspired him to make stilettos — as a way of going against the rules.

However, the popular red bottom was born when he decided to put red nail polish he got from his assistant on the shoes. The new style was an instant hit, and an empire was born.

Since then, luxury shoe collectors have been crowding stores to pick up a pair but the most impressive collector is American novelist Danielle Steele who owns over 6000 pairs of shoes from Louboutin.

To date, Louboutins are considered a must-have, especially if you’re in affluent circles.

But before creating one of the best French shoe brands , Christian Louboutin had done some freelance work designing shoes for big brands like Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, and Maud Frizon.

In addition to heels and other women’s footwear, Louboutin also sells men’s footwear, handbags, cosmetics, and fragrances.

9. Yves Saint Laurent

View this post on Instagram A post shared by SAINT LAURENT (@ysl)

Yves Saint Laurent started his career as a fashion designer by working in Maison Dior and eventually took over the Creative Director position after Christian Dior’s sudden demise.

Subsequently, in 1962, he established his own eponymous brand. Known for introducing padded shoulders in the 80s, YSL or Saint Laurent introduced other trends in women’s fashion too, like Le Smoking tuxedo suits, Mondrian dresses, ready-to-wear clothes, and cinched waist dresses.

YSL also championed gender equality and celebrated feminine power and freedom. He also made androgynous fashion a thing before it actually became one!

As the brand expanded, it also ventured into selling perfumes, shoes, handbags, accessories, and jewelry.

Celine was established in 1945 by Céline Vipiana and her husband, Robert, as a custom-made children’s footwear brand.

It was only in 1960 that they forayed into fashion and started making ready-to-wear designs.

Celine focussed on keeping clothes comfortable yet sophisticated, which appealed to women.

The brand has been worn by Prince Albert and Princess Charlotte of Monaco, on top of celebrities like Natalie Portman and Naomi Watts.

Soon, Celine ventured into making bags, fragrances, shoes, leather goods, and men’s clothing, all while keeping the brand ethos intact. The brand is now under the LVMH group since 1996.

11. Jacquemus

View this post on Instagram A post shared by JACQUEMUS (@jacquemus)

One of the youngest Paris luxury brands on the list is Jacquemus , established in 2009 by self-taught French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, who was only 20 years by then.

This budding brand took the fashion world by surprise with its unique designs and collections.

His experimental, avant-garde designs had a different and fresh perspective earning him a spot in the Paris Fashion Week at just 22 and he became one of the youngest designers to showcase his collection at Paris Fashion Week. Jacquemus also won a Special Prize in the 2015 edition of the LVMH Prize.

While he has designed several pieces, the Jacquemus mini handbag, and Le Chiquito Noeud Satchel Bag are some of his most popular designs, having grabbed the attention of celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Rihanna.

To date, Jacquemus has expanded into creating footwear, menswear, handbags, and hats.

12. Louis Vuitton

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Louis Vuitton (@louisvuitton)

Established in 1854, Louis Vuitton is one of the biggest luxurious fashion houses not only in France but around the world.

The brand started as a luggage maker to meet the needs of carriage travelers at the time and has since remained one of the highly respected brands when it comes to making luxurious and high-quality luggage and handbags.

In fact, it is the biggest brand in the luxury leather goods industry today and has been the most valuable luxury brand for several years.

The signature LV monogram can be spotted from a mile away on all their items and has become a symbol of indulgence and affluence.

Though they started with bags and continue to be leaders in this section, they eventually started producing other leather goods, accessories, ready-to-wear clothes, shoes, jewelry, and watches.

Louis Vuitton is also so valued that it’s considered a collector’s item!

13. Isabel Marant

View this post on Instagram A post shared by ISABEL MARANT (@isabelmarant)

Before the launch of her famous brand, Isabel Marant initially launched several other labels including a jewelry label and a knitwear label “Twen” together with her mother.

4 years later, in 1994, Isabel Marant launched her brand of the same name and showcased her first collection at the Paris Fashion Week in 1995.

Her French chic and bohemian designs not only drew the attention of Parisians but have also attracted the likes of Kate Moss, Emma Watson, Katie Holmes, Rachel Weisz, Blake Lively, and Anne Hathaway, among others.

The brand also created a childrenswear line and later launched its footwear collection which has been loved by royals like Princess Eugenie who fell in love with their boots. The brand also deals in bags, accessories, and jewelry now.

Marant’s creative work has been awarded numerous accolades from the Whirlpool Award for the best female designer in 1998, the Fashion Designer of the Year at British Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards in 2012, to the Contemporary Designer of the Year at the Elle Style Awards in 2014, and more.

14. Van Cleef & Arpels

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Van Cleef & Arpels (@vancleefarpels)

When it comes to jewelry, Van Cleef & Arpels is among the most popular luxury French brands.

It was founded in 1906 after the unification of the Van Cleef and the Arpels, following the marriage of Alfred Van Cleef and Estelle Arpels.

Alfred was a Dutch diamond cutter, while Estelle’s father, Salomon Arpels, was a precious stones dealer hence creating an unstoppable duo in the jewelry world.

The brand quickly gained popularity with royalty with the likes of Grace Kelly (Princess of Monaco), Eva Perón (First Lady of Argentina), Kate Middleton (Duchess of Cambridge), and Wallis Simpson (Duchess of Windsor), among others adorning its jewels.

The brand has also had the honor of creating the crowns for Empress of Iran, Farah Pahlavi, and the Queen of Egypt, Nazli Sabri.

Unlike other French jewelry brands , the jewels of Van Cleef & Arpels have a distinctive style and feature flora, fauna, and fairies to them.

15. Longchamp

View this post on Instagram A post shared by LONGCHAMP (@longchamp)

You might be surprised to know that Longchamp started as a tobacco store in 1948 before becoming one of the most famous French luxury goods companies that we know today.

Jean Cassegrain established it as a leather pipe maker before realizing the potential in leather and pivoting to luxury leather goods and handbags.

Jean’s son, Philippe, who was only 11 years old when the Maison was founded, assisted in making cigarette cases and he developed skills as a craftsman.

The work was of high quality and made by highly skilled craftsmen, which is why the brand got a national and international clientele.

Fast forward to today, they have become one of the most respected leather goods brands in the business making small leather goods, travel accessories, shoes, and even ready-to-wear for both men and women. Their most popular handbag design is the Le Pliage bag.

16. Balmain

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Balmain (@balmain)

The brand had the most glamorous designs, was inspired by royalty, and was worn by some of the most famous celebrities.

Balmain’s designs have been adorned by yesteryear actresses like Liz Taylor, Brigitte Bardot, and Sophia Loren to current faves like Penelope Cruz, Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, and Gigi Hadid.

Though it started as a clothes brand, Balmain ventured into creating bags, footwear, and accessories, and they even added kids’ wear too.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @jeanpaulgaultier

He worked with Pierre Cardin before launching his brand even though he had had no formal education in fashion. His innovative and avant-garde designs are the fruits of his talent and vision.

Gaultier is credited with the idea of designing skirts for men, also known as kilts, but that didn’t come without controversy.

If Givenchy is synonymous with Audrey Hepburn, then Jean Paul Gaultier is known for their collaborations with Madonna, for whom they designed stage costumes for her world tour.

Apart from their clothing collections, Gaultier also makes perfumes with the most popular being Le Male, Le Beau, and La Belle.

Paris: the world’s most successful brand.

“Paris is a brand. Every year more than forty-two million visitors buy into ‘Vive le France’, making it the most successful brand in the world.”

Simeon Onaji

Paris: The World’s Most Successful Brand

Photo: Neirfy /Shutterstock

“The national characteristics… the restless metaphysical curiosity, the tenderness of good living, and the passionate individualism. This is the invisible constant in a place with which the ordinary tourist can get in touch just by sitting quite quietly over a glass of wine in a Paris bistro.” Lawrence Durrell, 1969

The ultra-cosmopolitan French capital city has a longstanding global reputation as a mecca of art, culture, fashion, and architecture. It is not only brimming with internationally famous attractions but is an energetic city where beauty and vivacity ever-weave its curvy streets, making it a prime destination for travellers, who have many reasons to visit beyond the emblematic attractions and the world-renowned wines. Called the City of Light, City of Love and Capital of Fashion, one thing is for sure – Paris is the world’s most successful brand.

What else can be said? All adjectives and superlatives have been used exhaustively. It is simply Paris. This one word conjures up images of the Eiffel Tower, Arc De Triumph, the Moulin Rouge, and the Louvre. Even before the visitor arrives, they have inherent perceptions and inherited memories of the French capital. So intrinsic is Parisian culture on the rest of the world that visitors feel they are returning to a place from their past, not arriving into an unexplored city.

Fouquet cafe in paris

Memories are filtered through a grainy black and white lens, as it adds an extra element of romance as visitors reminisce on walks along the banks of the Seine with a lover; sip espresso in a smoke-filled café in the roaring twenties reading Le Petit Parisien; or even the never-ending evenings of champagne, hedonism, and burlesque, where any act is forgiven and lost to the night.

Paris transcends the confines of street signs and building numbers, it refuses to be so defined commonly. It is the ultimate source of creative inspiration for the layman and artist alike. Lautrec, Renoir, and Matisse are among an infinite list of artists, directors, authors, and architects who sought and found their muse in this bohemian jungle. Their names and the works they created, just like the visitor’s life-long memories of romance, charm, and passion, are synonymous with one word, Paris.

But Paris is so much more than just a city. Paris is a brand. Every year more than forty-two million visitors buy into ‘Vive le France ’, making it the most successful brand in the world. It doesn’t need marketing, it’s instantly recognizable. The familiarity of the city-scape brings to mind not only Paris but all of Europe. There is no market share, it is the market. Paris doesn’t just sell itself, but every other nation on the continent.

Whilst Rome, Berlin or even Athens have their own draw cards, you can’t say you have been to Europe if you haven’t been to Paris. It may not be your first destination, but it’s certainly the first question that is asked on you return home, ‘Oh you’ve been to Europe, did you visit Paris?’ If the tourist can be viewed as a consumer, then it can be said that they also have a choice. But with such a desirable attraction, coupled with social expectations there is no choice, Paris chooses you.

The Arc de Triomphe in Paris

Whilst it’s a mere reflection of its former glory, no other city is designed so perfectly to meet the tourist experience. It plays on its own romantic identity. Café Les Deux in Montmarte, where Améle was filmed and now a major tourist destination, is the perfect example of this. The film is about ‘an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, [who] decides to help those around her and along the way, [and] discovers love.’

This is exactly what Paris sells; the image of the rebellious, but innocent youth, falling in love for the first time. It’s so overwhelmingly powerful that it is undeniably bought into, time and again. But does this experience offer anything of real substance? The guidebooks suggest to ‘head off the beaten path and explore the side streets’. But these narrow cobblestoned pathways are designed for passes by to become lost within. Independent contemporary galleries meet antique stores and bistros in perfectly restored eighteenth-century townhouses. It’s this small attention to detail that makes it so immaculately flawless.

The tourist is not an independent character exploring the city, their agency is not their own. They play the role of their own deepest desires and the city provides the scene, aromas, and time period. Paris is in vogue and everyone wants to be one of the beautiful people. It’s there on display on the major boulevards, where ‘locals’ are living a perceived yet temporary existence in a city out of time.

Jean Cocteau, a French poet, wrote ‘In Paris, everybody wants to be an actor; nobody is content to be a spectator.’ But these words are by no means a critique of Paris. For want of a better word, Paris is perfect. Disneyland isn’t on the outskirts of the city; it is the city. It’s where dreams come true and will stand eternally foremost in the hearts of visitors because after all, ‘…we’ll always have Paris.’

8. HOTEL DU PALAIS, BIARRITZ

It is a well-known fact that the villa that houses the Hotel du Palais in Biarritz, was built by Napoleon III for his wife Eugénie. Few travelers realize, however, that the Spanish-born beauty had been to Biarritz before, and that it was she who convinced her husband to visit the resort town in the first place. Today, the scarlet-and-cream-colored seaside hotel – part of the collection of Leading Hotels of the World – still channels its grand heritage. Rooms are lavish and high ceilings create a breezy, destination-appropriate vibe. Equally sumptuous is La Rotunda restaurant, where the beau monde comes for special occasion meals. The extensive wellness facility, complete with a Guerlain spa and lounging areas with sea views, is the kind of enclave that Eugénie surely would have loved.

18 Best French Luxury Brands

Since France is the birthplace of craftsmanship, with a centuries-long international reputation. Paris is frequently regarded as the worldwide luxury capital. French tradition, acquired from the country’s extensive past, blends heritage, culture, food, and production.

Surprisingly while most believe France to be the epicenter of luxury fashion including accessories, it is not consistently listed as the largest country for luxury products.

However, in particular areas, French luxury companies appear to rise to the top of the premium list. For example, Louis Vuitton was named the most recognizable company in the world in 2023, topping customers in 80 nations.

For many years, the city has been home to a slew of boutique firms, especially in the apparel and jewelry sectors. Many luxury firms now include references to their Parisian heritage in their logo designs.

Chanel In America

Chanel, the preeminent French fashion brand, has had a powerful and enduring effect on women’s Haute Couture in the twentieth century.

Gabrielle Chanel, popularly known as Coco, is the creator of Chanel and, the woman in front of the creation of the Chanel brand. She was raised in a poor household in France but was quickly orphaned.

The House of Chanel has grown from humble origins on a Parisian street in the early twentieth century to become one of the world’s top luxury brands.

The House of Chanel originally opened its doors to the public as a millinery in 1909. Coco practiced her trade there with the fashion-conscious contemporary mistresses of the French hunting and sports élite, as well as acquaintances of her socialite as well as textile businessman Beau.

Coco Chanel passed away in 1971 at the age of 87. However, with the appointment of the new Creative Director, Karl Lagerfeld, the Chanel brand rapidly survived and expanded. The Ready-To-Wear line debuted around this period.

This was novel, as haute couture and similar items were often worn by celebrities. Others may now purchase and wear Chanel on the street. It was both high couture and streetwear.

Lanvin Paris signature gift packaging

Lanvin’s tale begins in 1889, in a modest hat shop in the center of Paris. When Jeanne Lanvin launched her first hat business in 1889 on the upper floor of a store, she was barely over the age of 22 and had completed her apprenticeship.

Her skill was extremely astounding even at such a young age. Jeanne Lanvin’s success extended beyond Paris.

The typography with the brand name is straightforward. Paul Iribe invented this in 1923. The emblem, which appears above the letters in this case, was inspired by a photograph of creator Jeanne Lanvin dancing and holding her daughter.

She described her trips and the traditional clothing that caught her attention, such as Indian saris, Chinese garb, toreador garments, and other ethnic fabrics and designs.

Jeanne Lanvin realized that producing a Lanvin scent was the natural next step. After all, perfume is a must-have item on any woman’s vanity. Maria Zède created the first perfume, My Sin, which was released in the United States in 1925.

Although Lanvin is still associated with French refinement, it is evolving and emphasizing streetwear. The Curb sneaker, a chunky shoe influenced by ’90s skate culture and developed by Sialelli, is now one of Lanvin’s trademarks.

Bugatti Divo is one of the best French car brands

Ettore Bugatti, an Italian-born vehicle manufacturer, created Bugatti in 1909. The firm is known for creating some of the world’s most prestigious sports vehicles, which are famous for their performance, flair, and exclusivity.

Bugatti’s early years were distinguished by a streak of racing triumphs that helped to establish the company’s image as an industry leader.

The Type 35 was a significant early model that won numerous races and served to solidify Bugatti’s reputation as a top-tier racing team.

Bugatti only makes a few number of cars every year, which contributes to their exclusivity and expensive price.

In comparison to other automobile manufacturers, the firm produces just about 70 vehicles each year. This implies that Bugatti automobiles are in high demand, which helps to keep their high price.

Today, Bugatti is regarded as one of the world’s most rare and famous vehicle companies , with a reputation for manufacturing some of the most modern and opulent sports cars available.

Those who are fortunate enough to buy a Bugatti, are driving one of the most spectacular and rare automobiles on the road.

Philippe Clicquot, a Reims cloth dealer, founded the champagne house in 1772. When François Clicquot died unexpectedly in 1805, his 27-year-old wife, Barbe Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot, took over the firm, no small achievement for this daring and adventurous 19th-century lady.

In French, veuve translates to widow. It is because of a young French woman called Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin that the champagne many Danes recognize by name nowadays is Veuve Clicquot, dubbed The Yellow Widow.

While Madame Clicquot passed away in 1866, she is credited with helping to create the magnificent crystal-clear drink that we know today.

She invented the remuage technique in champagne manufacturing, which has since been adopted by all champagne manufacturers and is being used today by tiny or extremely traditional champagne producers where the champagne is still prepared by hand rather than by machines.

Veuve Clicquot’s marketing approach aims to pitch its brand as a lifestyle rather than merely champagne. The brand promotes a certain way of life.

The most expensive Veuve Clicquot bottle is a shipwrecked bottle from 1841 that costs $31,656.90.

The 1841 Veuve Clicquot, discovered aboard the same shipwreck that housed the aforementioned 1820 Juglar vintages, not only holds the distinction of being the most costly bottle in the entire collection to have been offered for sale at auction, but it is also the oldest bottle in the world.

Ligne Roset

Ligne Roset is a high-end French modern furniture firm whose products are noted for their unique design, craftsmanship, and comfort.

In 1860, Antoine Roset established a wood processing plant in Montagnieu, France, which served as the forerunner of today’s well-known Ligne Roset furniture firm.

Initially, Ligne Roset specialized in timber items of all kinds like chair frames, umbrellas, as well as walking sticks. However, Ligne Roset did not enter the upholstered furniture market until 1936.

Ligne Roset Furniture is still a family-run business today, with over 150 locations and 700 retail distributors throughout the world. Furthermore, the firm maintains showrooms in key cities in places like Paris, Los Angeles, and Tokyo and works actively with over 50 designers.

Ligne Roset goods are developed at the plant in Briord, France, where quality control is assured from start to finish. Ligne Roset, an exterior emblem of excellence, is imprinted on each product.

Briord has been the company’s headquarters since 1973, and it has developed significantly since then. Armchairs, upholstery, sofa beds, occasional Tables, media storage, entrance, and sideboards are now available from Ligne Roset.

Cartier Paris

Cartier is a French luxury goods company that creates and sells high-end watches and jewelry. Few fashion and jewelry design firms in the world have achieved the status of Cartier.

Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier, who took over his master’s factory.

Despite the enormous uncertainty and turbulence that accompanied the continuing French Revolution, Cartier continued to find prosperity and expansion over the next decade, launching the first Cartier shop in 1859.

While every Cartier watch is remarkable, there are a few notable collections that have changed our perception of watches. Cartier’s renowned collections include Santos, Tank, Pasha de Cartier, Panthère de Cartier, and Ballon Bleu.

Cartier’s emphasis on excellence may be seen in its designs and products. To manufacture its items, the firm only employs the best materials and the most competent artisans. Because of this attention to detail, Cartier’s jewelry is among the most sought-after in the world.

Cartier was a family business from its inception in 1847 until 1964. It is now a completely owned subsidiary of the Swiss Richemont Group, but its headquarters are still in Paris, France.

Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton, one of the world’s most recognizable luxury brands, is linked with high-end leather products, renowned steamer trunks, distinctive monogram handbags, exquisite timepieces and jewels, and cutting-edge fashion.

Louis Vuitton was a French clothes designer and artisan who founded his namesake business in Paris in 1854.

The legendary Louis Vuitton brand’s hallmarks include the LV monogram, which refers to the brand’s name and is written in a bold and beautiful typeface, and the four-petal flower adornment, which was conceived by Georges-Louis Vuitton in 1896 and represents joy.

When Louis died at the age of 70, his son, Georges, took over the firm. His father founded the firm, but Georges grew it into a global brand.

Bernard Arnault is in charge of the LVMH empire, which includes 75 fashion along with cosmetics companies such as Louis Vuitton and Sephora. In 2021, LVMH paid $15.8 billion for American jeweler Tiffany & Co, thought to be the largest luxury brand transaction ever.

The iconic monogram design on canvas, which is instantly identifiable, is the most popular Louis Vuitton print. The distinctive print pays attention to the historical significance of the ageless design, staying true to the legendary brand’s past.

Hermes Paris

Thierry Hermès founded Hermes in 1837 to establish a saddle-making company in Paris, during a time when horse-drawn carriage was still the standard.

The brand’s reputation for workmanship was established early on, laying the groundwork for excellence that would be carried forward when its offers extended into other product areas.

It is well-known for its fine craftsmanship and use of high-end materials, as well as its famous handbags like the Birkin bag.

Hermès is principally operated by the Hermès family, who owns the bulk of the firm through their holding company, H51.

Hermès is considered to be one of the few luxury companies that has stayed independent of huge conglomerates such as LVMH. Nonetheless, by 2023, the Arnault family, who owns LVMH, had secured a 20% stake in Hermès.

Celine Paris

Celine Vipiana together with her husband Richard launched Celine in 1945 to run a made-to-measure children’s shoe business on 52 rue Malte. Raymont Peynet, a cartoonist, designed the shop’s distinctive red elephant emblem.

Céline Vipiana, the company’s creator, designed the Triomphe logo when her automobile broke down right in front of the Arc de Triomphe. The chain around the renowned French monument immediately inspired Vipiana, and so the Celine Triomphe was formed.

By the 1970s, Celine had gone global, with new shops appearing all over the world. It is currently a subsidiary of the LVMH group, which is directed by Bernard Arnault and controlled through his private holding company.

Celine has used a variety of marketing methods to preserve its position as a premium luxury goods producer, high-end women’s clothing, and leather goods business since its founding in 1945.

Celine provides a wide range of expertly designed items, such as ready-to-wear apparel, purses, and accessories, including shoes.

Celine’s goods are distinguished by their clean lines, top-of-the-line supplies, and close attention to detail, which appeal to the brand’s target customer, who seeks understated elegance.

Celine now serves those with keen tastes in premium apparel and enjoys the brand’s simple style and superb craftsmanship.

Christian Dior, 30 Avenue Montaigne, Paris

Christian Dior, a French-born designer, launched Dior in October 1946. Dior was 41 years old at the time and had obtained considerable expertise in the arts; prior to studying as a garment designer, he operated an art gallery in Paris.

The company has been credited with reviving Paris as the world’s fashion center after it fell out of favor during WWII.

The New Look, which consisted of a full-skirted style, gave a new face to wartime male uniforms and affected everyone. The J’Adore fragrance, as well as the Dior Addict lipstick, are among Dior’s most recognizable creations.

The cost of Dior items varies greatly based on the item and series. Dior goods are generally considered high-end luxury items and may be rather pricey.

Dior also released a new version of their popular Miss Dior fragrance in 2021, with Natalie Portman remaining as the scent’s face. Dior is presently led by businessman Bernard Arnault, who also serves as CEO of LVMH.

17 Renowned Luxury French Brands that Belong in Every Wardrobe

This post is all about luxury French brands and prestigious French luxury goods.

Chanel, Dior, LV, YSL – these names, often just abbreviated to a series of seemingly innocuous letters, invoke powerful images – Paris in the spring, a modern Parisian woman wearing an impossibly chic dress, timeless and elegant couture designs.

In the past century, France became a shining beacon in fashion, and now, France is to fashion what Switzerland is to chocolate and watches, and Paris Fashion Week is the highlight of the fashion circuit (depending on who you ask, of course). After all, it is no coincidence that many terms interchangeable with fashion, “ avant-garde “, “ haute couture “, “ p rêt – à – porter ” to name a few, are generally French.

Paris, as the capital of the republic, the seat of a former empire and a royal domain, was entrenched in fashion and luxury already with its plethora of ateliers and boutiques.

As Europe rebuilt in the aftermath of the second world war many questioned old ways of thinking more broadly, democracy and the role of women in society for example, so too did thinking change about the role of fashion away from something utilitarian (because in war-time, it had to be) into a statement of iconography.

It is a natural progression that Paris, as the epicentre of this movement, became the centre for luxury fashion too. With so many French fashion brands emerging at this time, their designs adorning the affluent and young socialites and trendsetters that now stood for change, it only became natural that those designs became exclusive, more expensive and more luxurious .

France has forever changed the modern era of fashion, and in this article, we pay tribute to some of the greatest French luxury fashion brands that have contributed to the cultural spirit of the time.

“ Never forget that what becomes timeless was once truly new ” ~ Nicolas Ghesquière, creative director of Louis Vuitton since 2013.

french tourism brand

The eponymous Louis Vuitton was founded in 1854, years after Vuitton himself made the journey from his small home town of Anchay to the city of Paris on foot.

He arrived in Paris when the city was going through a period of industrialisation; with rapid development in locomotive transport opening up the possibility for travel to previously inaccessible destinations – trips that we wouldn’t think twice about nowadays! This increase in longer journeys presented a demand for high quality travel accessories, and this is where Vuitton would leave his mark on the world.

After working as an apprentice for a successful box maker and packer, and mastering his craft, Vuitton went on to open his own shop and established himself as a well-respected luggage maker. His innovative, flat-bottomed designs meant that luggage could be conveniently stacked for the first time in history, while the canvas material provided a lightweight alternative to the heavier suitcases available at the time.

Naturally, Vuitton’s designs soon became a favourite amongst the Parisians and over time, his brand’s success reached beyond the limits of France.

The Louis Vuitton brand survived far longer than its namesake and it is in fact his son, Georges Vuitton, who helped shape the brand into the one we know and love today. Whilst luxury trunks, bags and luxury leather goods remain the brand’s claim to fame, further items are now sold at Louis Vuitton boutiques including clothing, jewellery, watches and perfume – most of which are adorned with the iconic LV monogram.

Over the decades, the brand has opened many stores around the world but the flagship boutique in France remains at 101 Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Paris.

“ In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different ” ~ Coco Chanel

french tourism brand

Initially founded as a millinery in 1909 in the small French town of Deauville, Chanel was not always the fashion powerhouse it is today.

Back then, the House of Chanel solely produced exquisitely crafted hats, yet, it was in 1913 that Coco’s brand truly made its mark. At her newly opened boutiques in Deauville and later Biarritz, the Chanel brand redirected its focus from stylish hats to high fashion ( haute couture ), with incredible success.

During a time of constrictive clothing and overly elaborate dresses, Chanel designed elegant, comfortable yet simple clothing, truly disrupting the norms of what was considered proper for women of that time.

Over the years, the Chanel brand has captivated their audience with numerous iconic fashion pieces that the Chanel brand has now become synonymous with. Pieces such as the little black dress , the quilted purse and the classic Chanel tweed suit.

In 1921, Coco launched her own signature perfume, forever changing the face of luxury perfume packaging with the release of the iconic Chanel No. 5 perfume . By the 21st century, Chanel had been transformed into one of the world’s leading luxury brands, one that represents sophisticated haute couture and ultimate luxury .

The Chanel flagship boutique is now located at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris.

**Editor’s Tip** if your heart is set on a classic Chanel timeless piece, be sure to contact the store ahead of time. Exclusivity and scarcity remains a big part of the Chanel brand, and you may be disappointed if you are looking for a specific piece and didn’t contact the store beforehand.

“ I wanted to be considered a good craftsman. I wanted my dresses to be constructed like buildings, moulded to the curves of the female form, stylizing its shape. ” ~ Christian Dior

french tourism brand

French fashion designer Christian Dior founded the Dior brand in December 1946 at 30 Av. Montaigne, Paris.

Since its launch, the House of Dior has been an industry leader in redefining how women dress, and home to some legendary creative directors and designers over the years – one of whom is included on this list in his own right, Yves Saint Laurent .

Redefining how women dress was Christian Dior’s focus right from the beginning. In 1947, Dior made his first impact on the world of fashion when he presented a 90-piece collection to magazine editors at his Parisian townhouse. The collection was entitled ‘ New Look ‘ – one that is still celebrated to this day.

During this time, World War II had come to an end, and rationing had become a thing of the past. The ‘ New Look ‘ encapsulated the feelings of society at the time, with structured garments designed to flatter the female shape, plenty of fabric, cinched in waists and full bodied skirts. It was this indulgence after such troubling times that led to Dior being a overnight success.

Throughout the decades, the Dior brand has continued to grow, selling ready-to-wear garments as well as fragrance , makeup and luxury home items .

The Dior headquarters and flagship store remains located at the address it all began, 30 Avenue Montaigne, Paris.

“ I don’t like showing off or trying to be seductive. I’m always myself.” ~ Claudie Pierlot

french tourism brand

The Parisian fashion house, Claudie Pierlot, was founded in 1984 by the designer of the same name, and created for the ‘Parisian woman’.

The French-born designer, Claudie, wanted to create a female look that was both elegant and straightforward. To this aim, she created a set of chic designs which women could comfortably incorporate in their day-to-day activities whilst looking effortlessly sophisticated, and transition from morning to evening with ease.

In 2009, Claudie Pierlot was purchased by SMCP ( Sandro – Maje – Claudie Pierlot – Furlac ), run by artistic director Vanessa Raveau and CEO Jean-Baptiste Dacquin.

Throughout the years, the integrity of Pierlot’s original designs has been retained and the simple Parisian elegance of her brand continues to attract buyers to this day.

“ Fashions fade, style is eternal ” ~ Yves Saint Laurent

french tourism brand

Algerian-born fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, first gained recognition whilst working for the house of Dior, and took over the reins as Creative Director after the passing of Monsieur Dior himself.

Nevertheless, it was after launching his own brand in 1966 that Yves Saint Laurent became a household name, a brand defined by the founder’s Le Smoking tuxedo – a piece for women that was inspired by menswear, celebrating gender fluidity before it became an important part of the conversation as it is today.

Whilst at Dior, Saint Laurent challenged Dior’s signature ‘New Look’ heavy dresses with cinched in waists, and presented collections that were far more fluid, used far less fabric, and as a result, were much lighter.

After launching under his own name in 1966, Saint Laurent became the first designer to present a ready-to-wear collection, opening his first ready-to-wear boutique, Rive Gauche .

To this day, women’s Le Smoking tuxedo suits and sheer organza blouses remain the hallmarks of the Yves Saint Laurent brand, but more importantly, it is what Yves Saint Laurent represented that means so much. As his partner Pierre Bergé once said, “ Gabrielle Chanel gave women freedom. Yves Saint Laurent gave them power .”

Saint Laurent championed gender equality, was one of the first to put Black models on the runway and overall, was a man ready to challenge social norms. Naomi Campbell credits Saint Laurent for helping her to get on the cover of Vogue, stating at his death: “ my first Vogue cover ever was because of this man .”

He was also a lover of art, and was able to successfully blend fashion and art on the runway, most notably in his 1965 Mondrian collection, an homage to the Dutch artist’s modernist flare.

Yves Saint Laurent’s final fashion show took place in 2002, before spending his final years in Marrakech, Morrocco . After his passing, and under the guidance of Creative Director Hedi Slimane, the ready-to-wear line of Yves Saint Laurent was re-branded to Saint Laurent, in honour of the name of their first ready-to-wear collection, Saint Laurent Rive Gauche .

“ Good fashion is evolution, not revolution ” ~ Pierre Balmain

french tourism brand

Maison Balmain was founded by Pierre Balmain in 1947. Unknown to many, Balmain released his first collection two years prior to Christian Dior – a collection which also featured fuller skirts and cinched in waists, creating the ultimate hour-glass silhouette.

Accentuating the female form through detailed embroidery, shoulder pads, and nipped in waists became Balmain’s signature look, and his first collection was aptly titled ‘ Jolie Madame ‘, representative of the gaiety, merriment and opulence of those post-War Parisian nights.

Pierre Balmain’s ‘Jolie Madame’ style code remains central to the house’s DNA today, with the brand’s signature tailored  Balmain jackets  retaining the iconic silhouettes of their 1940s predecessors.

Having been trained as an architect, Balmain combined his taste for well-constructed items with lavishly beautiful clothing, stating that “ dressmaking is the architecture of movement ”. Take, for example, the much loved classic Balmain double-breasted blazer. First created in the early noughties after Pierre Balmain’s own distinctive style, the Balmain classic blazer has become a must-have statement piece for any luxury wardrobe.

As with many of the other well-known fashion houses of Paris, Balmain was home to some well-known Creative Directors, each of whom left their mark on the brand, including Oscar de la Renta, who headed the team from 1993 to 2002.

Today’s Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing was 25 when offered the role, after spending time at Italian luxury brand Roberto Cavalli. Rousteing has truly catapulted Balmain onto the world stage and continues to steer it in the right direction, with the aim of bringing Pierre’s original idea of ‘ the ‘Jolie Madame’ into 2021 to see how it could be.’

“ It’s a fabulous thing to give life to fabric, to make something move well, the harmony of color ” ~ Hubert de Givenchy.

french tourism brand

Mentored by Cristóbal Balenciaga, and a master of gentlemanly elegance, fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy founded the house of Givenchy in 1952, and rapidly gained recognition for his beautiful and innovative couture designs.

In that same year, Givenchy presented his first collection, one that was to leave a lasting imprint upon the history of fashion. His chic ‘separates’ were a breath of fresh air during an era of more constrictive clothing, and showcased designs such as sophisticated blouses and lightweight skirts that combined architectural lines with elegant simplicity.

The show was opened by Bettina Graziani, a French supermodel at the time and one of Hubert’s muses. Bettina opened the show in a blouse that was subsequently named ‘the Bettina blouse’, but she wasn’t his only source of inspiration.

Hubert was a lifelong friend of Audrey Hepburn, his most famous muse, and this certainly helped to catapult the house of Givenchy to world-wide recognition and become a household name. In 1957, Givenchy created a perfume for Audrey Hepburn, who wore it for more than a year before it was released to the public. The perfume, L’Interdit , is still sold in perfumeries worldwide today.

During the 60s and 70s, the brand broadened its focus to include ready-to-wear (p rêt – à – porter ) clothing for women, as well as a men’s clothing line. In 1988, the Givenchy brand became part of the French luxury conglomerate LVMH, and remains a leading luxury French brand decades after it all began.

The flagship boutique can be found on 36 Avenue Montaigne, Paris.

“ A woman can carry a bag, but it is the shoe that carries the woman ” ~ Christian Louboutin

french tourism brand

French-Egyptian fashion designer Christian Louboutin is renowned for his exclusively shiny, red-lacquered soled footwear – quite possibly the most renowned of the luxury French shoe brands.

After opening his own shoe salon in the heart of Paris in 1992, Louboutin’s unique, handcrafted designs soon made him popular with various high profile clientele.

Louboutin’s exclusive designs were first inspired after seeing a sign forbidding women from wearing sharp stilettos inside a building with wooden flooring. “ I wanted to defy that ”, Louboutin said “ I wanted to create something that broke rules and made women feel confident and empowered ”.

Since founding his celebrated red-soled brand, Louboutin has introduced limited edition pieces, held gallery exhibits as well as designed a custom cocktail bar for Grey Goose. Fragrances, make-up, handbags and men’s footwear have also been successfully included as the brand continues to go from strength to strength.

Louboutin boutiques are found strewn all over the world but his flagship store in Paris, the city where it all started, can be found at 19 Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

“ When a woman’s clothes are in harmony with her emotions, she shines from within ” ~ Alber Elbaz, former creative director of Lanvin.

french tourism brand

In 1889, young designer Jeanne Lanvin opened a small hat shop at 16 Rue Boissy d’Anglas. Her flare for design was as clear as day and, four years later, her success allowed her to relocate to a larger location and launch Lanvin fashion house, much to the Parisians’ delight. Today, it is now one of France’s oldest surviving couturiers.

From children’s wear to lingerie , Lanvin’s creations captivated the women of Paris. Yet, Lanvin’s business sense and ambition pushed her to share her beautiful creations beyond the limits of the French capital.

In 1924, Lanvin was inspired to delve into the world of fragrance, eventually launching the iconic French perfume, Arpège and later, in 1933, producing the very first “ eau mixte ”, L’Eau de Lanvin – what we know today as a unisex fragrance.

In 1926, she went on to expand her brand to include custom made men’s wear, offering everything from suits to pyjamas.

Nowadays, Maison Lanvin remains one of the leading French luxury brands, selling ready-to-wear clothing, bags, shoes and accessories for both men and women, luxury home décor and fragrances. The Lanvin flagship store in Paris is prominently situated at 22 Rue du Faubourg St Honoré.

“ Fashion is a movie. Every morning when you get dressed, you direct yourself ” ~ Manfred Thierry Mugler

french tourism brand

French born designer, Manfred Thierry Mugler has made his mark upon the fashion world creating unique designs that blend haute couture with daring elements of the animalistic and futuristic.

After launching his first women’s collection in 1973 under the brand name Café de Paris , Mugler quickly gained recognition, and the financial backing required to open his own company, launching the Mugler brand we are familiar with today.

In 1992, Mugler finalized his first haute couture collection, featured at the Ritz in Paris. That same year, he also released his first signature perfume, Angel, the first ‘gourmand’ perfume in the history of fragrance – a perfume made primarily of synthetic edible notes.

Since then, Mugler has accumulated significant commercial success, and has designed clothing for numerous celebrities including Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian and Megan Fox.

“ Women should have choices, and women should feel good in what they wear ” ~ Phoebe Philo, former creative director of Celine.

french tourism brand

Founded in 1945 by Céline Vipiana and her husband Robert, the house of Celine is famed for its sophisticated items and minimalistic, yet modern designs.

Located at 52 Rue Malte, Paris, the first store originally opened as a made-to-measure, children’s shoe store. Yet, over the years the Celine brand has branched out to include ready-to-wear collections for women, women’s shoes, fragrance and leather accessories made in Florence, and counts prominent individuals such as Prince Albert and Princess Charlotte of Monaco as fans.

Following the death of Céline in 1997, Michael Kors stepped into the position of Creative Director, where he remained until his departure in 2004 to form his own eponymous line.

Having been owned by the LVMH group since 1996, this French ready-to-wear and leather luxury goods brand is still going strong.

“ I just want to tell something about happiness ” ~ Simon Porte Jacquemus

french tourism brand

Jacquemus is undoubtedly the smallest and youngest of the French fashion brands featured so far, but there’s no doubt that readers will be familiar with their most famous design, the Chiquito Noeud satchel .

Since its launch in 2009, this up and coming brand has gained its rightful place amongst the top luxury brands in the world. The talented self-taught French designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, started his own label when he was just 19 and his designs quickly took the fashion world by storm, often worn by celebrities and influencers in Europe and the US alike.

Recognized for the youthful freshness of his designs, his collections are deconstructed, surrealist creations that have pushed the boundaries of French fashion. In fact, his playful approach was recognized at LVMH Prize in 2015, with Jacquemus being crowned Winner of the Special Prize 2015 .

His focus on clothing rather than accessories, and priority towards size inclusivity, have set him apart from other luxury brands. One thing is for sure, this is only the start for Jacquemus.

Thanks to his constantly growing success, Jacquemus opened his new headquarters this year in central Paris, located at 69 Rue de Monceau.

“ All I’ve ever wanted was for Chloé to have a happy spirit, to make people happy ” ~ Gaby Aghion

Gaby Aghion Fashion Quote

Founded by Egyptian-born Parisian designer, Gaby Aghion in 1952, Maison Chloé is synonymous with gorgeous feminine designs and prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear) collections.

Unlike other brands, Chloé does not share its founder’s name but was named after one of Aghion’s dearest friends, Chloé. Aghion wished her brand to embody the same glamorous, yet bohemian and carefree attitude she so admired in her friend, and all succeeding creative directors have worked hard to maintain Aghion’s original vision.

Over the decades, Chloé has nurtured some of the most talented creative directors, many of whom have become household names such as the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney, who was promoted to the Creative Director at the tender age of 25. Her spring summer 2001 collection left a lasting mark upon the Chloé brand with the addition of horse motifs in her designs – a true representation of the carefree nature of the Chloé girl.

Other note-worthy releases by Chloé include the famous ‘ Paddington bag ’ – an it-bag featuring a rounded, supple shape and a padlock closure.

In 2001, Chloé launched a sister brand called ’See by Chloé’, offering a wider range of options for the younger generation.

To this day, women still gravitate towards Maison Chloé’s feminine mystique and the doors of its flagship boutique in Paris remain open at 253 Rue St Honoré, a few steps away from the Mandarin Oriental Paris .

“ We don’t have a policy of image, we have a policy of product ” ~ Jean-Louis Dumas, former CEO of Hermès

french tourism brand

The iconic brand that so many dream about owning one day. It’s hard to believe that a brand so synonymous with luxury and exclusivity (and anyone that has tried to get their hands on a brand new Birkin or Kelly will know exactly what this means) all started as a humble workshop in Paris in 1837.

Founded by Thierry Hermès, his aim was to cater to the equestrian needs of European noblemen, providing leather riding gear such as saddles and bridles.

Headquartered at 24 Rue Du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris, its home since the early 20th century, Hermès now offers its modern day clientele a whole lot more than just saddles.

Over the years, this ultra-luxury French brand has now grown its offering to exquisite and highly sought-after handbags (probably what they are most known for), ready-to-wear garments, home décor and other general lifestyle accessories including watches and fragrances .

Whatever one’s Hermès desire may be, it will be presented in an iconic orange box, with its signature horse and cart logo printed on the top – a nod to the brand’s early roots.

It’s worth remembering that Hermès is all about scarcity, with only a certain number of pieces produced each year to retain that element of exclusivity. Unlike many other brands, orders for the classic bags that they have become so well-known for cannot be placed online. They can only be placed in-store, with a waitlist and a few months’ wait before receiving the much-coveted piece.

Unsurprisingly, the market for second-hand Hermès bags has boomed in recent years.

For those that love Hermès but are still saving to make their next big purchase, check out this article on the best Hèrmes sandals dupes .

“You shouldn’t want others to wear things that you won’t wear yourself” ~ Isabel Marant

french tourism brand

Isabel Marant is a luxury French brand known for its casual and stylish clothing.

After launching her namesake brand in 1994, French-born designer Isabel Marant first shaped the foundations of her brand in a small and unassuming Paris boutique on Rue Charonne. Yet, her designs were quickly recognized for their understated brilliance and now, the Isabel Marant headquarters may be found prominently on 50, rue Croix Des Petits Champs, Paris.

The speed with which the brand has grown in such a short period of time is a testament to the creativity of Isabel Marant designs, the quality of each piece and the loyalty of her international clientele.

Aptly described as ‘ Parisian cool-girl chic ‘, Isabel Marant collections are typically made up of a few simple, yet stylishly embellished, pieces such as skinny, cropped trousers; flowy blouses; chunky and cosy knits; and tailored jackets and coats.

Nowadays, Isabel Marant’s designs can be seen worn by some of the most fashionable celebrities including Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Kate Bosworth, Rachel Weisz and Alexa Chung.

In 2011, Marant first launched her iconic high-top sneaker with a concealed wedge heel. Recently, precisely ten years later, she has released a redesign of her original wedge sneaker!

16. Cartier

“When it was a question of jewelry or business: we were the Cartiers. Our father was unaware that we had secretly made the same oath: to become the greatest in our profession” ~ Louis Cartier, grandson of goldsmith Louis François Cartier.

french tourism brand

Despite being the only name on this list not to offer p rêt – à – porter collections, it would be hard to compose a list of the best French luxury brands and not include world famous watchmaker and jeweler, Cartier.

Paris, 1947. Goldsmith Louis François Cartier founded the company we now know as Cartier after taking over the workshop of his master, but it was actually his three grandsons Louis, Pierre and Jacques who built the firm into an international success.

Louis Cartier was responsible for some of the brand’s most well-known and celebrated designs including the Santos wristwatch and the Tank Watch , inspired by the tanks on the battlefields of WWI. He also relocated the Paris branch to Rue de la Paix in 1899. Meanwhile, Pierre established a New York City branch in 1909 and Jacques became responsible for London operations with a store on New Bond Street – a boutique which is still present to this day.

Following the demise of the last of the three brothers in 1964, the great grandchildren of Louis François Cartier decided to sell the business. By 2012, Cartier was owned by Swiss-based luxury goods holding company founded by billionaire Johann Rupert, and Elle Pagels, the granddaughter of Pierre Cartier.

Cartier remains as loved today as it did over 100 years ago, with the popular Love Bracelet and Juste Un Clou Bracelets often seen warn on celebrities and social media personalities alike.

17. Jean Paul Gaultier

“ Fashion is about what you look like, which translates to what you would like to be like ” ~ Jean Paul Gaultier

french tourism brand

Parisian-born Gaultier founded his eponymous fashion label in 1982 and over the years, has become known as the ‘ enfant terrible ‘ of the fashion industry thanks to his unconventional designs. A brand which mastered the art of balancing femininity and masculinity, through gender-bending bold and opulent designs.

Without any formal training in fashion design, a young Jean Paul would send sketches to prominent designers and couturiers, until his talent was eventually recognised by Pierre Cardin. Later on, he was sent to manage the Pierre Cardin boutique in Manila, where he worked up until 1974.

After leaving Cardin, he went on to release his first individual collection in 1976, and his creative and unconventional designs were soon recognized by journalists at Elle and Marie Claire. This newfound recognition helped to launch Jean Paul Gaultier – the brand we know today.

From there, the rest is history, with Jean Paul garnering a number of well-known clients. In the 1990s, he famously designed Madonna’s wardrobe for her Blonde Ambition World Tour, where his iconic corset with a cone bra certainly grabbed the public’s attention.

Aside from running his own eponymous line, Jean Paul Gaultier was also the Creative Director for the luxury brand Hermès from 2003 to 2010, until choosing to retire from the world of fashion at this 50th-anniversary runway show in 2020.

25 French Brands You Can Buy in the US

25 French Brands You Can Buy in the US everyday parisian

When I first started the blog, the concept was, “how to bring a little bit of Paris into your everyday life.” After traveling and staying in Paris for months at a time, I finally moved back to Chicago full-time. I was homesick for Paris, the blog was my solution to keep Paris in my life. Now I am constantly reading articles I round up for you on Sundays, which helps me stay connected to the city when I am gone. I still travel back to Paris a few times a year, but if you can’t make it as often as I do, I hope the blog brings Paris to you. This was a reader request and I was so happy that a good amount of you was asking for this. Here are 25 French Brands that you can buy in the US that will bring Paris to you.

* This post was originally written in the early stages of the blog and has recently been updated for new French brands I have discovered and new brands that are available in the US.  If there are any favorites I am missing, post them below and share them with the community.

French Fashion Brands You Can Buy in the US

Saint james.

The classic French stripes of Saint James are a wardrobe staple. I have one hanging in my closet from a few years ago that I purchased in Paris that I still wear. There are many stores around Paris, and if you find yourself in Soho, you can shop at the NYC location. You can always purchase online, and they make great gifts. This is the classic long-sleeved version.

They also have this super cute side button sweater for the colder months.

French Brands You Can Buy in the US Longchamp

longchamp bag everyday parisian in Paris

My first Longchamp was during my first trip to Paris in college. I was so excited to go into the store and pick the perfect color. I have bought more Longchamp bags over the last 15 years than I admit. I have mini, small, large, and travel sizes. These large weekend sizes are perfect for travel. My sister has one, too!

One of my favorite features about these bags is they fold up so easily. I throw one into my suitcase for Paris, and I can use it on my trip when I am out and about. It is so lightweight, and you don’t have to worry about it getting wet because it is nylon.

French skincare brands to shop

I highly recommend having  Cicalfate Restorative Cream  in your medicine cabinet. This cream will amaze you at how much you reach for it after seeing this cream’s magic healing wonders. Cuts, burns, scrapes, you name it, cicalfate cream has got you covered. I also have the  hand cream  on my desk and in the kitchen; it was the one product that helped heal my chapped hands during the winter months.

XeraCalm AD

The basis of this French brand is its thermal water which is found in their beauty and skincare products. You will find this in French pharmacies all over and it is affordable. I currently use their RetrinAL and love their mineral sunscreen . Definitely stock up on this if you can squeeze it in your bag home from France.

French Lingerie Brand to Buy in the US Chantelle

Chantelle is available at Nordstrom Lingerie is a key part of a French Girl’s wardrobe. What I love about Chantelle, in particular, is that it is made for so many sizes and shapes. This is one of the few brands I have seen that is size-inclusive for bras. The price point is around $60-$90 for a bra, depending on the style. You can see ideas on how to Frenchify Your Lingerie here for more brands and ideas.

laguiole steak knives everyday parisian french finds

Laguiole is a brand you will find all over France at markets and restaurants. You will recognize the handles by their signature style. Their knives are probably the most well-known product. I currently own the regular knives and the steak knives made by Laguiole. They also make beautiful flatware sets, bottle openers, and serving pieces.

I had my eye on a pair of Repetto ballerina flats for months. I would walk by the store in the Marais all the time. I got them as a present f or my birthday while living in Paris. I absolutely love them! They are delicate, so they aren’t my walk-all-around Paris kind of shoes. But they are great with jeans or a dress or skirt. They are expensive but will last a while if you take good care of them.

This is the Audrey Hepburn ballet flat that so many other shoes have been modeled after at different price points for years.

Their pieces are pricey and investments, but I personally love them. They often have sales. You can sign up for their emails for discount alerts. You will see a Maje or Sandro store all over the city of Paris. There are even a few Stock (outlet) Maje stores. You can see all locations on their site here.

French Fashion Brands You Can Buy in the US Sandro

Sandro Coat and Longchamp Bag -

My first Sandro purchase was a wool coat at the end of October. I was convinced I would be warm enough in a leather jacket until the weather broke, and I couldn’t make it. It was a bit pricey, but I found it at a discount, and five years later I still wear it and love it. There is a Sandro Stock (Outlet) in the Marais on rue de Sévigné. If you have the chance, I highly recommend a visit. You can still purchase Sandro here in the States at retailers like Nordstrom and Bloomingdales. The pieces are investment pieces, so don’t be put off by the price.

The Best People-Watching Cafés in Paris

Polène has been on my radar for years and when I finally had the opportunity to get back to Paris, I made a point to get to the store. It was a quick walk from Adèle and Jules and some of the other girls joined me. We all walked out with Polène bags, I got the nano in black. I couldn’t love it more. There is a larger size but this one fit my frame best. You can try them on in the store. They have a variety of colors and sizes on display. Once you choose the one you want, they will get you a brand new one from the back.

Sizes and styles come and go quickly. Some girls had to return to the store later in the week to check on a new delivery. There is an NYC location and a San Francisco location in the works. They ship to the US now if you want to shop directly online.

French Home Brands You Can Buy in the US

Cire trudon.

Cire Trudon manufactors their candles in Normandy France and each one has a specific scent and store. Their candle making dates back to the 17th century. I fell in love with the mint candle when exploring their scents in the Paris location on the Left Bank. Scents such as a Christmas tree and chimney fire are part of their holiday collection. Positano and Tuileries with rose notes caught my eye.

They have a few stores in Paris and operate out of NYC on Spring Street in the US. Several retailers such as Neiman Marcus and Saks sell Cire Trudon candles. The price points range from $55-$260 for their room defusers. Larger candles can be up to $700.

le creuset french finds

I recently started collecting Le Creuset when I moved in with my now husband. We have a few pieces we love and use on rotation. You can choose one color and do a constant theme or mix and match colors. I baked enough bread in my Dutch Oven to last a good while back in 2020. The Dutch Oven would be my recommendation for a first-time purchase, and build from there. If you aren’t sold on Le Creuset just yet, I loved this article with more of the history and process that goes into each piece here.

I love my Staub Dutch Oven and I am so happy I purchased it. I have the cast iron one that helps cook meats and lock in the juices. They are all investment pieces but they are built to last a lifetime. I purchased white which I would advise against as it is hard to keep clean. I would love this stacking version as a wedding present.

diptyque paris candle everyday parisian

The first addition to my new apartment in Chicago was a Diptyque candle, the scent was Baies . Since then, I now own about 5 different Diptyque candles. They are all around the apartment from the coffee table, bathroom, end table, and entry. I personally love the Figue and Rose scents the best. These candles are a bit on the pricier side than normal candles but they last forever and their fragrance is beautiful. You can easily reuse the glass container to hold makeup brushes and other small collectibles. They make a great gift too! I just got the Tuberose candle in the mail from a client and it was such a sweet surprise. The original store is on St Germain de Près in Paris. Make sure you stop by in Paris if you are close by.

I discovered Compagnie de Provence in Paris a few years back. Their bottles and branding are beautiful but also their scents are lovely for the home. Klorane is the brand behind the cult favorite dry shampoo . You can find this brand available at just about every French Pharmacie. I use the Mango shampoo and conditioner and love it. It smells fantastic and works well with my hair. While visiting Paris, I have always found the pollution and water to kill my hair. Staying loyal to Klorane and only washing/conditioning my hair a few times a week really made a difference. I would love to try some other scents like Peony, which sounds amazing. I also love their eye patches for puffy eyes before or after traveling and their toner .

Is there a fabulous perfumerie in Paris? Hidden away little gem?

Hi Kristen,

I will keep my eye out for you. I am sensitive to perfumes due to migraines so I don’t wear it as often as others.

I have a few Longchamp bags . I purchased another during Nordstrom sale last year …not made in France .I returned and they do in fact use factories in Asia . Check the inside tag to be sure .

My favorite flatware we use every day is by Guy Degrenne (best estate sale find ever!). And I really miss Pierre Deux!

I Love Degrenne. I have their tea pot and a few other items. It’s just hard to find retailers that sell them. I wish it was easier to find them.

That sounds like the best estate sale find ever!!

Because of the Covid-19, Maison Kayser closed all 16 stores in New York City and Brooklyn. Angelina with his renowned Mont Blanc pastry and hot chocolate opened in November 2020. To buy delicious baguettes, croissants, tartelettes and quiches Lorraines go to Marie Blachère in Manhattan and Long Island. 🇫🇷

Thank you, Marianne. I appreciate the updates! I am excited to get back to NYC to try out Angelina.

Thank you very much for this amazing article! I am in love with Parisian style and like to discovery new french brands! Polene is one of my favorite. I also like LAURIE and CAUDALIE.

Regarding fashion brands I have recently discovered DRESSARTE Paris. As I travel a lot, I like the way they work so I can order whatever I want according to my budget and my body measurements.

Love this list! I’m in the market for a new shampoo so I might try Klorane! I’m a huge Pilage fan & diptyque, great post.

Thank you! I hope you love the Klorane shampoo. I also use the Mango version and it smells so good in the shower. Keep me posted.

A Timeline Of The Most Prominent French Fashion Brands

French fashion brands have long been synonymous with elegance, sophistication, and luxury. From iconic fashion houses to up-and-coming designers, France has established itself as a global hub for haute couture.

Read on to learn about the rich history of luxury French fashion brands, tracing their evolution from their humble beginnings to their current status as trendsetters.

1837 – Hermes

A Timeline Of The Most Prominent French Fashion Brands

Hermes, the esteemed French fashion house, proudly holds the distinction of being the oldest luxury brand in the world that continues to thrive to this day. Established in 1837 by visionary entrepreneur Thierry Hermes, the brand initially specialised in crafting exquisite saddles and equestrian equipment. However, it was Hermes’ ingenuity and innovation that propelled the company beyond its equestrian origins.

The introduction of the first unofficial Hermes bag, designed to transport saddles, marked a significant turning point. This groundbreaking creation paved the way for the iconic Kelly and Birkin bags, which would become synonymous with timeless elegance and unmatched craftsmanship.

Hermes’ unrivalled legacy not only revolutionised the fashion industry but also set the stage for the emergence of French fashion as a global force to be reckoned with.

1847 – Cartier

Cartier, founded by Louis-François Cartier in Paris in 1847, has left a significant mark on French fashion. The brand’s ascent began when Princess Mathilde purchased a Cartier piece in 1856, catapulting it into high society.

Louis Cartier, the founder’s grandson, expanded the brand internationally, opening a boutique in Paris’ Rue de la Paix in 1899 and establishing Cartier’s reputation for innovative designs like the mystery clock and Art Deco creations. With royal certificates from King Edward VII and other European courts, Cartier became the jeweller to royalty.

As they ventured into watchmaking, Cartier’s first timepieces marked a significant milestone, solidifying the brand’s status as a purveyor of luxurious watches and jewellery—a reputation that endures to this day.

The creation of Cartier’s first wristwatch, the Santos, in 1904 marked a pivotal milestone in the history of Cartier watches . Designed by Louis Cartier at the request of aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, it revolutionised timekeeping for men. This pioneering design paved the way for the modern wristwatch and solidified Cartier’s reputation as an innovative watchmaker.

1854 – Louis Vuitton

A Timeline Of The Most Prominent French Fashion Brands

Louis Vuitton was established in 1854 in Paris by its namesake founder, Louis Vuitton. Initially renowned for designing chests adorned with the brand’s signature monogram print, Vuitton’s craftsmanship and innovation soon led to the creation of the first Louis Vuitton bag.

The brand’s popularity has endured over the years, and today, Louis Vuitton stands as the most coveted brand worldwide, with a presence in 81 countries, including fashion-conscious nations like Switzerland, Ireland, Monaco, and the United Arab Emirates.

As a symbol of unrivalled luxury, Louis Vuitton continues to hold a prominent place in French fashion, offering expertly crafted ready-to-wear garments , shoes, accessories, and their iconic Neverfull tote, all featuring the emblematic monogram.

The brand’s commitment to stellar craftsmanship and its sought-after leather goods has left a great impact on French fashion both historically and in the present day.

1909 – Chanel

By the visionary Gabrielle Coco Chanel, the brand Chanel was founded in 1909. Initially focusing on hat making, Coco quickly gained recognition for her revolutionary approach to women’s fashion, introducing comfortable and liberating designs during an era when corsets and restrictive garments prevailed.

Among Chanel’s most iconic creations are the Classic Flap bag and the tweed jacket, which have become enduring symbols of timeless elegance . With a specialisation in luxury products and fashion accessories, including haute couture and ready-to-wear, Chanel has left an indelible impact on the industry.

The brand’s lasting popularity is further evidenced by its strong presence in celebrity circles, with notable figures such as Hilary Duff, Rihanna, and Nicki Minaj frequently seen sporting Chanel bags. This celebrity representation highlights the enduring quality, style, and allure that Chanel continues to embody.

1946 – Dior

A Timeline Of The Most Prominent French Fashion Brands

The visionary French brand, Dior, revolutionised the fashion world with his first collection, the iconic New Look—a silhouette characterised by a narrow waist and knee-length skirts that exuded femininity. Since its inception, Dior has evolved and expanded its product offerings.

While the brand initially focused on couture garments, it has since expanded to include ready-to-wear collections, accessories, fragrances, and beauty products. Over the years, Dior’s popularity has soared, and in 2023, it was named the most popular fashion brand online, according to Luxe Digital.

With its timeless designs, exceptional craftsmanship, and enduring appeal, Dior continues to captivate fashion enthusiasts worldwide, maintaining its position as a symbol of French elegance and luxury.

Other Significant Fashion Brands

In addition to the iconic brands previously mentioned, other significant fashion houses have made a lasting impact on French fashion.

Givenchy , founded by Hubert de Givenchy in 1952, quickly gained recognition for its elegant and refined designs. The brand’s association with Audrey Hepburn further propelled its fame.

Yves Saint Laurent , established in 1961, emerged as a trailblazer in French fashion, introducing his revolutionary “Le Smoking” suit in 1966, which revolutionised women’s fashion by bringing menswear-inspired elements into women’s wardrobes.

Both Givenchy and Yves Saint Laurent have left an indelible mark on French fashion, influencing trends, and capturing the essence of sophistication and creativity.

The 22 Top French Luxury Brands That You Should Know

Style , Where To Shop

If fashion had a capital, it would be Paris. And there are plenty of French luxury brands that show just how popular French fashion is.

The French introduce so many prominent trends in the high-fashion industry. The haute couture house, for instance, was first established in Paris. Classic French luxury brands such as Chanel, Givenchy, and Hermes were also created from French roots — which is primarily why the rest of France (and even the rest of the world) looks up to the fashion standards that they’ve set.

Today, we’re introducing you to 22 classic French luxury brands that you can take inspiration from whether you’re a fashion student, stylist, collector, or enthusiast.

Let’s hop in!

22. Claudie Pierlot

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Claudie Pierlot was founded in 1984 by Pierlot herself. Claudie Pierlot is under SMCP, a French brand that caters to three other fashion houses: Sandro, Maje, and De Fursac. With her passion for fashion and natural stride for elegance, she began the company to cater to the “modern Parisian woman.”

Unlike the other classics, Claudie Pierlot is one of the French luxury brands that are more accessible and affordable. Despite this, Pierlot doesn’t fail to deliver quality and elegant pieces.

Claudie Pierlot’s style is industrial, modern, and sleek. Think blazers, collared blouses, coats, and vests. Since formalwear only fit men years ago, Pierlot made sure she made these French clothing pieces accessible and perfect for the female body – this was one of the first French brands to try menswear on women.

Claudie Pierlot is one of the French luxury brands that has been worn by famous celebrities and icons such as Alexa Chung and Rihanna.

21. Chanel

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Chanel is one of the most famous and notable haute couture brands in the world. In fact, they do a great deal of leading the standards of everyday fashion. Chanel unconsciously created a rule book that a lot of women still follow today, making it one of the most iconic French brands in history.

Chanel was founded in 1910 by Coco Chanel herself. She is the first one to remove the corset from women’s fashion by replacing more comfortable pieces that are suitable for both everyday and occasional wear.

Today, Chanel continues to inspire women with their timeless collections of dresses, bags, and shoes.

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Hermès is a French luxury brand that carved its name first through leather goods in 1837. Thierry started a harness workshop in rue Basse-du-Rempart. At that time, the company was well-known for its simplistic yet practical, memorable, and elegant bag designs which led to its success. Eventually, Hermès expanded to perfume, jewelry, and ready-to-wear.

While Hermès is known as a collector’s favorite, Hermès never forgets the importance of practical use in their designs. The Hermès Birkin bag inspired by the fashion icon Jane Birkin is one of their most prominent pieces that is both a shelf collectible and a useful everyday bag. In fact, this was created to combat Jane’s particular problem of “not having a bag fit for practical and everyday use.”

19. Louis Vuitton

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Louis Vuitton was founded in 1854, very well known as a luggage brand, but was immediately one of the top French luxury brands (even just for luggage). Because of their consistent and progressive impact on the public, they eventually released their first handbags which quickly led to their popularity in the industry. This was even before they established their first French fashion collection!

Buying your first Louis Vuitton bag is a memorable experience. Regardless of the price, you acquire a piece of this great brand’s history and world-renowned reputation. It is almost always an honor.

Fortunately, the French brand was able to “ride with the times,” creating designs that cater to modern interests and trends without leaving out classic LV trademarks like the logo monogram design.

18. Yves Saint Laurent (YSL)

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Although Yves Saint Laurent started a little later than its known competitors, the French luxury brand did not fail to capture the love and interest of the fashion industry. The brand was founded in 1962, after honing his craft by working under Christian Dior. Yves Saint Laurent introduced the first “girl boss” key trends such as the tuxedo suit for women and the Mondrian Dress (a sheath color block dress inspired by a Mondrian Abstract painting).

Yves Saint Laurent’s style is described as a “classic Parisian flair infused with rock-and-roll edge”. YSL is no doubt a fashion brand that impacted modern styles up until today. After YSL’s rise, similar brands followed, showcasing La Garçonne and smart casual styles.

It’s clear that YSL is one of the top French luxury brands today for good reason: these pieces are just so beautiful!

17. Christian Dior

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Christian Dior is one of the oldest French luxury brands that motivated a lot of fashion houses to come to life. As mentioned earlier, Yves Saint Laurent was inspired by his practice under Dior. Who knows how many French luxury brands opened under the inspiration of Dior?

Dior is known for a lot of things, but if they have a competitive edge it would be Christian Dior’s eye for detail, love for clean lines, and interest in geometric silhouettes. Versatility, femininity, and elegance is the brand’s promise.

Dior’s most popular silhouette includes a narrow waist and wide bottom, often showcased with full a-skirts. The French brand also shows expertise in crafting and offering high-quality handbags to the market.

16. Cartier

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Cartier is considered one of the oldest and most notable prestigious French luxury brands making jewelry. Louis-François Cartier founded the brand in 1847. Although he was known to establish the brand, it was not only until his three grandsons nourished its success by opening new branches across the globe in the 20th century.

Louis Cartier, one of Louis-François’ three grandsons, is said to be the creative heart of the company. Jacques and Pierre were also known to contribute to the company’s success — sourcing varieties of gemstones from the middle east and improving the business aspect of the company.

The “Love Bracelet” is the most popular piece and the firm favorite of many collectors. This piece was introduced in 1969 and was designed to symbolize everlasting love.

15. Christian Louboutin

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

It’s fairly easy to spot a Christian Louboutin shoe from afar. How? Just spot the iconic red sole. Louboutin created this to create a memorable trademark, which I agree is quite smart. Aside from their notable mark, they built their reputable name with their elegant designs.

By far, Louboutin is now considered a “classic” must-have piece for every French luxury collector. If you wish to invest in your first Louboutin pair, look up pieces from their Pigalle style collection. Its classic and timeless look make it a versatile shoe for every outfit.

Today, Louboutin expanded its offerings, now offering handbags and cosmetics to the market. This is definitely one of the most iconic and recognizable French luxury brands out there.

14. Givenchy

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Givenchy is best known for the brand’s relationship and collaboration with fashion icon and movie personality Audrey Hepburn, designing her costumes for several films. The “Little Black Dress” as shown in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of the brand’s iconic appearances on film. Their mutual interest and collaboration created a win-win situation for both parties. Audrey elevated the brand’s value by being their muse while Givenchy secured a reputable title that benefited her career for years.

While a fairly fresh brand compared to its competitors, Givenchy showed its prowess, competence, and talent by establishing its name as a classic brand.

Givenchy’s style is characterized by feminine silhouettes, bright colors, and youthful designs.

Chloé was founded in 1952 by Gaby Aghion. Her goal was to offer a modern version of ready-to-wear pieces and luxury clothing. Minimalistic, chic, and boho were her main aesthetic. The brand grew even more as Karl Lagerfeld joined the team in 1966, along with Stella McCartney and Phoebe Philo as creative directors. Because of this progress, Chloé gained massive traction and popularity in the 1970s.

Although the brand is known for designing modern silhouettes, Chloé ceases to let go of classic French fashion principles which retain the elegance and beauty of its designs. In 2002, the brand started offering limited luxury handbags to the public. Their most popular design is their satchel-style bag which is both sophisticated and practical.

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Celine is a luxury brand with a very humble start, beginning as a children’s shoe brand in 1945. They began selling minimalist and elegant ready-to-wear pieces for women in 1960 which eventually gained the attention of working women. Since then, Celine became a classic must-have for girl bosses and one of the top French luxury brands.

Office-appropriate modern chic is Celine’s ultimate style. And feeling powerful and empowered is the main goal for most of Celine’s pieces. Whether it is a bag, a piece of clothing, or a shoe, regardless of how stylish it looks, Celine reserves a space for every woman to be comfortable in each of them.

One of Celine’s most notable products is their luggage tote bag (Nano Luggage Tote) because of its unique but versatile trapeze silhouette. For collectors, this product is even considered a staple, a must-have.

11. Balmain

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Balmain is known for its dramatic, creative, and powerful designs that are catered to boost the female silhouette. Surprisingly, Balmain is known for two things: blazers and cocktail dresses. An interesting pair, don’t you think?

Balmain was founded by no other than Pierre Balmain in 1945. His brand quickly popularized which led to the birth of his fashion name “the king of French fashion”. Balmain’s competitive edge is supported by two opposite ends: innovation and tradition. Although Balmain likes to play around with intricate and new designs, the brand does not forget the principles of French fashion. That’s what makes them interesting.

Today, Oliver Rousteing, Balmain’s appointed creative director in 2011, keeps the roulette of ideas active but remains to take hold of the brand’s timelessness by following the same values.

10. Goyard

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Goyard is a luxury brand centered on leather goods and quality handbags. Surprisingly, the brand is a classic one that started in the 1850s. Before expanding into leather goods, the company used to manufacture trunks and luggage that evidently gained a lot of traction at that time. Success after success led to its expansion, bringing them to the modern world as seamlessly as its competitors.

The sophistication and elegant look of Goyard’s chevron pattern have become a staple in prominent people’s wardrobes to the point that it has become an honor to acquire a piece by the brand. They sustained regardless of the world’s changes for a reason, after all.

Their best-selling item today is the St. Louis Goyard Tote, which is inspired by the silhouette and pattern of their original Goyard trunks.

9. Longchamp

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Did you know that Longchamp started as a Tobacco store before it ventured out into luxury leather goods and handbags? Longchamp was founded in 1948 by Jean Cassegrain. But, the company only diverted its offerings to leather goods in 1971. The reason? Longchamp was already creating leather goods for smokers as a side hustle. Eventually, their leather smoking accessories overpowered their tobacco sales, which led them to focus on what they do best.

Fast forward to the present, Longchamp now offers a range of handbag designs for women. Their popular design, the Le Pliage bag, most especially took flight. Who wouldn’t love a stylish bag that is also pocketable?

The Le Pliage bag comes in all colors and sizes, which makes it possible for one to bring several color variations on a vacation or a summer trip.

8. Jacquemus

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Jacquemus is the ice-breaker of French fashion. As the youngest one around, it is not surprising to see fresh perspectives and designs by the brand. Simon Porte Jacquemus was just 20 years old when he started his brand in 2009. As mentioned in an interview, his designs were often inspired by his life in the south of France.

Simon’s life was not spoiled with many opportunities. Although growing up in a small town with modest farm life was not something you would expect of a rising fashion designer, it was what pushed him into his career.

Jacquemus is known for its experimental designs and familiar-yet-different French-style silhouettes. Their most popular item is his Le Chiquito Noeud Satchel Bag, which continues to be a big hit among celebrities and fashion influencers today.

7. Isabel Marant

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Isabel Marant launched and founded her brand in 1994, releasing her first collections at Paris Fashion Week that year. Marant set a new trend that would set her apart from the rest of her competitors. French-cool-girl is her mantra.

Though Marant’s designs show a familiar aura, her love for modernism set her apart from her competitors. La Garçonne is not new, but the way she merged feminine elements to tomboy style made it look fresh to the eyes.

When browsing through Marant’s collections, it is not surprising to see ruffles and tailored fits on the same page. It’s even harder to come up with a “style genre” for Marant’s designs, mostly because it is an ubiquitous mix of everything. Despite that, she knows how to keep all styles in harmony,

6. Lanvin

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Lanvin is one of the oldest French fashion houses that still sticks around in the present-modern day. Lanvin was founded in 1889, offering a variety of ball dresses for women and their children. Think elegant evening gowns and elegant flapper dresses. Lanvin grew even more as the brand expanded their offerings to men’s clothing, perfume, and home decor.

Nobody would have thought that an old fashion house catering ball and court dresses would come this far in the 21st century. Surely, the company faced heavy measures to maintain the brand on the front lines of French fashion.

The brand was transformed under the care of Alber Elbaz, who took over the company in 2001. He was a regular employee but was regarded as a creative consultant because of his rare and natural talent for design.

5. Thierry Mugler

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

For Thierry Mugler, animals and humans are one and you can see this philosophical concept manifest in many of his designs. Mugler is clearly not a traditionalist. He is not afraid to play with texture, color, and shapes that play against the principles of French fashion. His camp-style, architectural, and avant-garde way of seeing life is his way of expressing himself — and it did him good.

Thierry Mugler takes advantage of the feminine silhouette by emphasizing the hourglass shape in his designs. He does this by making the shoulders look extravagant and exaggerated, romanticized with his fantastical designs.

“Power dressing” is what Thierry Mugler would call his style. But it’s true, it does take guts to pull off anything made by Mugler. Liberating for the inner creative, for sure.

His French designs are favorites of celebrities like Lady Gaga, Cardi B., and Beyonce, who are recognized influences with very high appeal and powerful personalities.

4. Sandro

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Evelyne Chetrite’s goal when she started her own label in 1984 was to offer womenswear with both yin and yang qualities. With Parisian elegance as her foundation, she found a decent following that led to her success.

Clean lines that welcome layer and flare is how we see Sandro’s style. Sheath dresses, printed blazers, and effortlessly cool dresses are just some of our favorites from her designs.

Sandro created a wholly new world for the girl-boss-chic with her style. In fact, her pieces have caught the eyes of prominent women and men across the globe. Her timeless yet conservative approach to innovation enabled her to win the game of growth and progress and allowed Sandro to become one of the top French luxury brands.

3. Courrèges

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Courrèges’ futuristic, geometric, and modern designs are unlike the common approach of a French fashion label. Yet, this uniqueness brought André Courrèges to succeed in the industry.

André founded his very own fashion house in 1961. With his era (the 1960s) as his inspiration, he was able to establish a trend that would soon be described as a classic. In fact, his love for space-age style is still applied to modern designs today (and the youth loves it).

Courrèges is known for his white ankle boots that paired very well with his unconventional designs.

French luxury brands, french brands, french clothing brands, and french fashion brands you should know about

Kenzo is another creative futurist, a French luxury brand that ceases to follow such traditional principles. Although it does not reflect designs similar to Dior or Givenchy, the brand’s creative and youthful energy is not to be underrated.

Kenzo was founded by a Japanese designer named Kenzo Takada. His diverse origin did not stop him from establishing his very own fashion house in Paris, France. In fact, he took advantage of his differences to stand out in the French clothing industry.

Colorful knitwear, bright colors, and flashy prints is the brand’s main specialty.

Eres was founded in 1968 by Irene Leroux, who was just 23 at that time. At that age, all you think about is adventures, trips, and excitement. This lifestyle pushed young Irene to create an elegant swimwear line that focused on flattering the curves of a female body, thus creating one of the most interesting French brands. Her iconic cuts and unique colorways paired with high-tech materials put her ahead of her competitors.

Eres was eventually acquired by Chanel, one of the other iconic French brands, continuing the revolutionary designs of the original label.

Style Notes: Ba&Sh, designed by the very chic Barbara Boccara and Sharon Krief, is for the true bohemian, a point that was proven during the summer period when they release quintessential seasonal items like crochet dresses, silk pants, and poplin tops. What to Buy: We've noticed fabulous boots are abundant.

Asymmetric Leopard-Print Devoré-Velvet Midi Dress

Style Notes:  As Iro was founded by onetime music producers, it's understandable why there's such a strong rock-chic vibe running through each collection. What to Buy:  If you don't find a party dress you love from this brand, we'll eat our berets.

10. Clergerie

Ineni Raffia Slides

Style Notes:  Over 30 years old and now going strong again under the creative directorship of David Tournier-Beauciel, Clergerie has a host of bloggers who adore the wearable, slightly masculine styles. What to Buy:  We're seriously into these sandals.

Style Notes:  What more can we say? Chanel is the Paris megalith that has cemented some of the most important parts of anyone's wardrobe. What to Buy: Chanel's bags and jewelry always retain their value over time.

DIor + Mini Saddle Bag with Strap

Style Notes:  Since former Valentino designer Maria Grazia Chiuri took over the reins, many people (celebs included) have enjoyed seeing her delicate style echoing through the brand. What to Buy:  The fashion-editor set is smitten with the brand's logo prints. We're partial to this sleek iteration.

Flore Fragrance Lace Soft-Cup Triangle Bra

Style Notes:  Lingerie connoisseurs will be more than aware that Eres makes some of the best-quality underpinnings around. They're subtle and understated but so luxe at the same time. What to Buy:  Bras, bras, bras. We know many who swear by them, no matter their size.

Gathered Charmeuse Maxi Dress

Style Notes:  Founded in 1889 by Jeanne Lanvin, the brand has always been a source of fantastic eveningwear. Alber Elbaz stepped down in 2015, when Bouchra Jarrar replaced him but recently departed. The new creative director is Olivier Lapidus, a Balmain Homme alumnus. What to Buy:  A charmeuse piece because it's beyond stunning.

Short Cotton Dress

Style Notes:  Maje has plenty to offer across the board, but it's the brand's decorative bomber jackets that have been steaming ahead—Bella Hadid has one, you know. What to Buy:  We're obsessed with this dress.

17. Aurélie Bidermann

Caliche Earrings Recouvert D'or Jaune 750/1000

Style Notes:  There's something carefree and spirited about Aurélie's '70s-tinged, trinkety jewellery. From luxe boho festival bracelets to more delicate styles, it's the kind of brand you can mix and match and collect throughout a lifetime. What to Buy:  These beautiful earrings.

18. Faith Connexion

Style Notes:  Emmanuelle Alt is a big fan of this label and often wears its pieces to fashion week. What to Buy:  Something cool like this party dress.

Triomphe Oval-Frame Tortoiseshell Acetate Sunglasses

Style Notes:  This French heritage brand has become one of the most influential designer labels in the world.  What to Buy:  Who wouldn't love the Triomphe Sunglasses?

Logo-Patch Pleated Denim Mini Skirt

Style Notes:  Kenzō Takada was born in Japan but founded his label in Paris. These days, it's presided over by Felipe Oliveira Baptista, but there's still an irreverent Frenchness to the sports-luxe trend it does so well. What to Buy:  This logo patch skirt will do just fine.

21. The Kooples

The Kooples

Style Notes:  The Kooples is all about dressing for everyone. Plus, the contemporary price point makes it easy to take part. What to Buy:  We're mildly obsessed with this summer dress.

22. Jérôme Dreyfuss

Ben Leather Bucket Bag

Style Notes:  Jérôme Dreyfuss makes covetable bags and shoes, and he's married to Isabel Marant. He's basically the coolest man in French fashion. Oh, and he names all of the bags after boys—just another reason to buy them in bulk. What to Buy:  More often than not, his creations arrive in easy styles perfect for the weekend, and this bag ticks all the right boxes.

23. L'Autre Chose

L'Autre Chose + Knee High-Heel Boots

Style Notes:  If you like your shoes to feature various points of difference, then L'Autre Chose should be marked in indelible ink on your shopping list. What to Buy:  These boots are perfection.

24. Lemaire

Twisted Cotton-Jersey Midi Dress

Style Notes: Christophe Lemaire has been around for some time, but it's only in the past few years that his name has shot into the mass style psyche . What to Buy:  Right now, we're loving the dresses.

25. Zadig & Voltaire

Ristyz Diamante-Embellished Lace-Trim Silk Mini Dress

Style Notes:  There's always a punky finish to everything Zadig puts into the world, whether it's a studded bag or a slung-on velvet blazer you could wear to a concert with ripped jeans. What to Buy:  This dress is really calling our names.

26. Balenciaga

Soft Hourglass Cotton Blazer

Style Notes:  Thanks to and Vetements chief and Creative Director Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga is going wild on the street style circuit. What to Buy:  The blazers are always a hit.

27. Louis Vuitton

1997 Monogram Petit Noe Bucket Bag

Style Notes:  With Nicolas Ghesquière leading the charge, LV has become a trusted source of burgeoning trends and directional fashion, from the incredible leather jackets down to the equally intricate footwear. What to Buy:  We just love the bags.

28. Saint Laurent

Belted Cotton-Twill Shirt

Style Notes:  Anthony Vaccarello is now leaving his mark on the storied house. What to Buy:  You'll own this forever.

Alberte Dress

Style Notes:  Created by French style icon Jeanne Damas, Rouje is a blogger favourite for its barely there blouses, flirty sundresses, and high-waisted denim. What to Buy:  Everything sells out equally fast, but this summer slip will undoubtedly soar.

30. Amélie Pichard

Amélie Pichard + Carrie 2 Black Croco

Style Notes:  Amélie Pichard is probably one of the most adventurous accessory designers in the entire world, not just France. What to Buy:  There's something really classic about Pichard's bags.

31. Sonia Rykiel

Sonia Rykiel

Style Notes:  Sonia Rykiel's brand DNA (knitwear, stripes, Left Bank chic) lives on via Julie de Libran's designs. What to Buy: Ok, this bag, though.

Patterned Maxi Dress

Style Notes:  Midpriced Sandro should be on your list for when you're looking for staples with a twist. The brand knows what people like wearing on a day-to-day basis and gives each of those items a little extra oomph every time. What to Buy:  There's much to choose from, but this dress is particularly lovely.

33. Polène

Leonce Chenal

The 20 French Clothing Brands Parisians Swear By

french tourism brand

Let me share with you today the twenty best French clothing brands I adore and either regularly shop at or plan to—though my budget isn’t as flexible as I’d like it to be ;). These mid-range French brands offer premium clothing pieces with excellent quality at more accessible prices than luxury designers , yet they remain distinct from fast fashion brands. Being French and passionate about fashion, I’ve known some of these brands forever. You might not be familiar with brands like Tara Jarmon, Antik Batik, American Vintage, and Sessún, which are lesser-known abroad but still deserve recognition. On the other hand, brands like Sézane, Sandro, and The Frankie Shop are already well-established internationally. Regardless, all these brands are very popular in France and can be found in Paris or other cities—like Bordeaux, where I’m based—if you’re planning a shopping trip.

I carefully select and personally love every product featured on Leonce Chenal. If you buy through my links, I may earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. Merci for your support <3

The Parisian label Sézane , founded in 2013 by Morgane Sézalory, offers high-quality, sustainable pieces made for everyday wear. I regularly shop for essential items like the Max shirt, which I have in different colors in my wardrobe, as well as Conrad T-shirts, knitwear, and many jumpers or cardigans like the Gaspard cardigan and the Jacob jumper. I am about 5 feet 8 inches tall and typically wear a size 6. However, I’ve found that Sézane sizes run a bit smaller than other brands, so I recommend sizing up on some pieces for better comfort.

I absolutely love Sandro ! The brand was created in 1984 by Evelyne Chetrite and embodies the effortless chic that Parisians are renowned for. Sandro offers excellent quality pieces, and I have many items from this Parisian label in my wardrobe, including coats, jackets, blazers, dresses, knitwear, and shoes. Last year, I even bought one of their men’s turtlenecks, and the quality is absolutely superb! While the prices are higher, the quality is definitely worth it.

I love Maje ! This Parisian brand was founded in 1998 by Judith Milgrom. The brand’s name is an acronym, weaving together the initials of its founding members: M for Moyal, Judith’s maiden name; A for Alain, her brother and co-founder; J for Judith; and E for Evelyne, her sister and founder of the sister brand Sandro. Maje’s style is a bit more feminine and colorful than Sandro’s. I adore their vibrant dresses and matching ensembles, which are perfect for vacations. Last year, I bought a few of their cashmere knits on sale and wore them all winter long. I also purchased a short belted wool coat that I love to wear in the fall.

4. Claudie Pierlot

I remember buying a gorgeous Claudie Pierlot navy blue long suit coat that I sadly regret selling. Lesson learned—no more selling my clothes ;)! I absolutely love Claudie Pierlot’s style, which is a bit more preppy than Maje and Sandro. The Parisian label was founded by Claudie Pierlot in 1984. She created her Maison “for Parisian women” with a look that’s both chic and effortless. Claudie modestly said her clothes were designed for everyday life, perfect for wearing from morning to evening. While she aimed to offer an everyday wardrobe, her creations always had a unique, personal touch.

5. Ba&sh

I absolutely love Ba&sh ! Last season, I bought a gorgeous cropped camel shearling coat from the brand that I wore during the mid-season, right at the end of winter. The quality is amazing, and I adore Ba&sh’s Parisian bohemian chic style, which reminds me of Isabel Marant. The label was founded in 2003 by two friends, Barbara Boccara and Sharon Krief. Ba&sh designs are perfect for the modern woman who juggles work, family, and travel, offering a wardrobe that is both practical and stylish.

6. American Vintage

I love American Vintage ‘s relaxed style. I highly recommend this French brand for its high-quality and super comfortable knitwear—I have a few pieces in my closet. When I was living in Paris, I used to visit their shop on Rue du Temple in Le Marais to buy sweatshirts, knits, and t-shirts. They offer great basics that you can mix with more polished items to achieve that “chic-décontracté” Parisian style.

7. Loulou Studio

Loulou Studio , founded by Parisian creative force Chloé Harrouche, emerged on the fashion scene in 2019 as a purveyor of quintessential French minimalism. The brand reflects Harrouche’s personal quest for the ideal knitwear, culminating in a line that combines the effortless elegance of Parisian style with the comfort and versatility of modern essentials. I absolutely love the feminine-masculine lines of Loulou Studio, and I have a few pieces in my wardrobe, including the Sbiru wide-leg tailored pants that I adore!

8. The Frankie Shop

I love The Frankie Shop ! Founded by native Française-turned-New Yorker Gaëlle Drevet, this brand is a testament to the power of individuality in fashion. Bridging the Atlantic, it merges the effortless cool of Paris with the dynamic spirit of New York, offering a sartorial haven for women who defy traditional fashion norms. Since opening its doors in New York’s Lower East Side in 2014, The Frankie Shop has carved out a niche for itself with its smart, oversized suits.

9. Zadig&Voltaire

Since its creation in 1997, Zadig&Voltaire has cultivated an effortlessly chic style. The brand’s aesthetic is characterized by the freedom expressed through the artful combination of contrasting materials and iconic pieces: the soft embrace of cashmere meets the raw edge of crushed leather, delicate lace dresses are paired with studded boots, and urban sweatshirts are juxtaposed with timeless fitted jackets. I love the brand’s cool, nonchalant vibe and its blend of masculinity and femininity!

10. The Kooples

I have a few dresses, suit pants, and blazers in my wardrobe that I love from the Parisian label The Kooples . Founded in 2008 by the Elicha brothers, The Kooples built its success and notoriety on a strong DNA—rock culture, tailoring expertise, and Parisian nightlife—along with an unprecedented “accessible luxury” positioning for its time.

11. AMI Paris

I absolutely love AMI Paris ! I’m especially fond of their cult classic Chemise Ami de Coeur, and I have the gorgeous Paris Paris Bag on my wishlist. AMI Paris is the perfect label if you’re looking for chic, high-quality tailoring. Founded in Paris in 2011 by Alexandre Mattiussi after his formative years in renowned Parisian couture houses, the brand showcases his expertise in men’s tailoring and French sartorial savoir-faire. AMI Paris offers a wardrobe of timeless basics that blend casual style with Parisian chic.

12. Rosaé Paris

Rosaé Paris is a charming Parisian clothing brand founded by Claire Teixeira in 2019. The brand’s philosophy is to offer an “ideal wardrobe” that transcends fleeting trends, focusing on timeless pieces crafted from the finest fabrics with impeccable cuts and a commitment to eco-responsibility. Rosaé Paris uses upcycled fabrics from prestigious French and Italian luxury houses. The production process is handled by exceptional European ateliers, with knits made in Portugal and leather goods produced in Spain and Portugal.

I love the masculine lines and oversized cuts of Soeur ! Soeur (French for “sister”) is a French ready-to-wear brand that epitomizes the effortless elegance and authenticity of French style. Founded in 2008 by sisters Domitille and Angélique Brion, Soeur celebrates femininity across generations, offering a wardrobe that transcends age and trends. The brand’s philosophy is rooted in creating delicate, accessible, and comfortable collections featuring timeless colors and borrowing elements from menswear.

14. Musier Paris

Musier Paris , founded by Anne-Laure Mais, encapsulates the essence of Parisian chic. Launched in 2018, Musier Paris offers a wardrobe of iconic pieces, each with a unique twist that blends classic femininity with modern vitality. The brand is tailored for the active woman who seeks both elegance and comfort in her daily attire. The collections are produced in limited editions, crafted from sustainable materials—mostly sourced from “dead stock” from leading European weavers and fashion houses—and made to order.

Rouje , founded by Parisian Jeanne Damas in 2016, captures the essence of French femininity with a contemporary twist. The brand’s aesthetic harmoniously blends soft dresses with structured, menswear-inspired jackets, floral patterns with sturdy knits, and vintage-inspired ’90s footwear. Distinctive prints, from reworked polka dots to animal prints and bold graphics, set the tone for each collection, while the choice of materials underscores Rouje’s commitment to comfort.

16. Antik Batik

I absolutely love the colorful and boho-chic creations of Antik Batik ! This French clothing brand was founded in 1992 by Gabriella Cortese. After moving from her native Turin to Paris at the age of 18, the young designer traveled to Tibet, Bali, and India, where she was introduced to artisanal dyeing processes and the ancient silk-printing technique known as ‘batik.’ Expect beautiful pieces made with natural materials, intricate embroidery, and vibrant patterns.

17. Marie Marot

Marie Marot is one of my favorite French shirt brands ! This Paris-based fashion label was founded by Marie Marot, who has been a shirt aficionado since her teen years. The brand draws inspiration from various fashion icons, including Carolyn Bessette, Lauren Hutton, and Charlotte Rampling. The shirts are slightly oversized, designed to suit all body types and to become the cornerstone of any modern wardrobe. Crafted from premium materials, these shirts are as versatile as they are stylish, easily transitioning “from the office to the seaside,” as the designer herself puts it.

18. Tara Jarmon

I absolutely adore the colorful pieces of Tara Jarmon ! The brand represents “French chic with a twist.” Founded through the creative partnership of David Jarmon and Canadian designer Tara, it has been crafting women’s ready-to-wear collections that radiate feel-good energy and a fearless approach to fashion. Each piece celebrates bold colors, vibrant prints, and high-quality fabrics, capturing the essence of joie de vivre .

19. Vanessa Bruno

Since its inception, Vanessa Bruno has embodied a chic, relaxed aesthetic that resonates with cosmopolitan women. The brand’s iconic sequined Cabas Tote captures this spirit perfectly—versatile, stylish, and a go-to for those who want to carry their essentials with a touch of glamour. Vanessa Bruno’s collections mix comfort with romanticism, showcasing the timeless Parisian allure that appeals to women everywhere.

I absolutely love Sessùn ! This French label captures the spirit of adventure and artisanal craftsmanship, inspired by the travels and cultural encounters of its founder, Emma François. Since its start in 1998, Sessùn has stood out for its unique blend of contemporary fashion and ancient traditions, even earning the Jeune Créateur prize. The brand is known for its instinctive design approach, focusing on emotion and authenticity rather than fleeting trends.

Et voilà! I hope this guide inspires you to explore these brands and incorporate a touch of Parisian chic into your own wardrobe. I’d love to hear from you—share your favorite French clothing brands, or let me know what you think in the comments below! Merci!

Spanish anti-tourism protesters take aim at Barcelona visitors with water guns

Updated on: July 9, 2024 / 9:18 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

Thousands of protesters marched through Barcelona over the weekend to express anger at mass tourism and its impacts on Spain's most visited city. Bystanders dining in restaurants in the popular La Barceloneta neighborhood were soaked when some protesters sprayed them with water guns.

Video showed diners being forced to change tables at some restaurants to escape the protests on Saturday, while other restaurants were symbolically taped off by the demonstrators.

Carrying banners reading "Tourists go home," protesters called for a reduction in the number of foreign visitors to Barcelona, stopping in front of hotels and restaurants to confront tourists.

holly-gaza-embed-00-03-59-10-still001.jpg

"I have nothing against tourism, but here in Barcelona we are suffering from an excess of tourism that has made our city unliveable," one of the demonstrators told the French news agency AFP.

Local authorities say the cost of housing has risen 68% in the Spanish city over the past decade, becoming one of the main points of contention for the disgruntled residents.

"The last years, the city has turned completely for tourists, and what we want is a city for citizens and not in service of tourists," another protester told a Reuters news camera.

In June, Mayor of Barcelona Jaume Collboni said that by 2028, he would stop renewing the thousands of tourist licenses that permit landlords to rent out accommodation to foreign visitors. The move would make the homes, which are currently advertised on platforms such as Airbnb, available to locals, according to Collboni.

An anti-tourism placard is seen during the demonstration

More than 12 million tourists visited the city, famed for sights such as the Sagrada Familia basilica, last year alone, according to local authorities.

The latest protest comes after similar large-scale demonstrations in other tourist hotspots across Spain. A protest in Málaga, in the southern part of the country, drew some 15,000 people to rally against over-tourism in June, while the island of Palma de Mallorca saw more than 10,000 people march against the impact of mass tourism in May.

According to Spain's national statistics office INE, the first five months of 2024 alone saw more than 33 millions tourists visit the country, which represents an increase of 13.6% compared to the previous year.

Spain isn't the only European nation grappling with the impact of tourism on the local population. Earlier this year, Venice, Italy became the first city to impose a fee on daily visitors.

The showcase of luxury fashion, culture and sport in the French capital grabbed headlines around the world for its huge celebrity draw. But its success is not only the result of its spectacular presentation but an intricate web of brand partnerships and strategic marketing.

Like many publishers, fashion title Vogue has had to adapt to the changing media landscape to remain relevant. Storytelling solely through words on glossy magazine pages no longer cuts through with fast-paced audiences who crave entertainment. While at its core Vogue excels at telling compelling and resonating stories, now it is leveraging new formats to captivate and engage its audience.

Over the past three years, Anna Wintour and her team have been crafting an annual tentpole event for the magazine called Vogue World. Launched in New York in 2022 and followed by a London event the following year, the spectacle arrived in Paris this June. Vogue World is a live editorial fashion show staged in the heart of the world’s most stylish cities, celebrating fashion and culture in grandiose style.

Explore frequently asked questions

Although still in its infancy for the Condé Nast brand, this year’s Vogue World saw a notable increase in scale and garnered significant interest. The event also raised a minimum of €1 million to Secours Populaire.

On a gray Sunday evening, 188 athletes, 151 models, 70 dancers and a 40-piece orchestra took over the streets of Paris. The spectacle began with a performance at the Ritz and culminated with 20 international breakdancers taking over Place Vendôme.

The theme of the night was the evolution of style over the past century, with each decade of fashion paired with a different sport. The Roaring Twenties were matched with cycling, the elegant mid-century gowns of the 1950s with equestrian sports, the leotard- and lycra-obsessed 1970s with gymnastics and the 1990s, known as the Wag era, with football.

Much like its other flagship event, The Met Gala, Vogue World attracted a mass of celebrities to its extravaganza. Venus and Serena Williams brought star sporting power, while Aya Nakamura and Bad Bunny delivered performances that lit up the night. And the runway? It was a huge display, with Sabrina Carpenter, Katy Perry, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Colman Domingo stealing the spotlight and leaving fans buzzing.

It’s a marketer’s dream

Bree McKenney, global senior vice-president at Condé Nast Creative, tells The Drum: “What Anna has built with Vogue World, globally, is really this whole universe of inspiration. It’s a marketer’s dream. A big part of it was figuring out which are the right brand partners to bring into this universe, which stories can we tell authentically.”

Some of those sponsors include eBay and Coach. Snowboarder Chloe Kim sported a complete eBay-sourced ensemble, spotlighting the platform’s ‘Eternal Eras’ campaign. The event also featured a creative Coach film starring Normani, blending sport and style in the Paris setting.

“It was a rich place for us to play with brands that are interested in celebrating their own level of excellence, championing their legacy and history,” explains McKenney. “Those are the brands that we found were most fruitful to kind of bring into the Vogue World universe to be a part of it and integrate into it. But so much of what that was was a set for content generation.”

The live stream was a place Vogue could build on these experiences for its sponsors. After 24 hours, the footage saw unique views across markets spike by 98% year-on-year, while total engaged minutes increased by 36% year-on-year. The event garnered a total of 219m views across all platforms and markets.

Earned v paid media

In terms of key performance indicators (KPIs), these are huge brands with huge budgets – and even bigger expectations of getting their return on investment.

“The majority of the partners were kind of non-endemic,” says Craig Kostelic, Condé Nast’s global chief business officer. He explains that eBay might seem non-endemic initially, but by promoting its luxury marketplace, it acts as an endemic platform targeting a wider audience that doesn’t typically consider eBay for high-end purchases.

Kostelic adds that, in terms of Vogue World and from a KPI perspective, the focus is on integrating paid media KPIs, such as impressions, engagement and attention, with earned media value, and that this has been a major priority over the past 12 months.

He adds: “More and more media has moved to the likes of Facebook and Google and the media conversation has gotten really commoditized. So, there has been a further kind of detachment between earned media value and paid media value. But at the same time, consumers are looking at it all as one thing [when it shows up on their feeds].

“We’re trying to do a better a better job of getting higher up in the food chain, in terms of when you look at talent deals and brand ambassadors, those are happening at the highest levels of the company.”

As a whole, Condé Nast aims to integrate talent and media partnerships with earned media value into a cohesive strategy, positioning them as a key component of a marketer’s overall brand approach. This upstream focus ensures that the company is seen as a strategic partner rather than just another media option, like Facebook or Google, and reinforces its value in the early stages of strategy development.

The art and science of walking the tightrope

Selecting brand partners is both an art and a science. Vogue World is highly selective, apparently ensuring that the brands it collaborates with are appropriate for the event’s high profile. McKenney notes the importance of maintaining the purity of Vogue’s editorial vision while also pushing the boundaries to meet the diverse needs of their audience. There’s a fine line between navigating the global mindset of Vogue and regional brand expressions. This balance is crucial in aligning the brand identities of Vogue and its advertisers, making sure each collaboration feels authentic and integrated.

“From a business perspective, the advertising budgets in the US are always the biggest,” says Kostelic. “There’s a balancing act about how you make sure it works for global and US budgets while also respecting the local cultural expression and interpretation because if you’re just going to bring American culture to France, there’s going to be rejection. That’s the tightrope that we’re walking all the time.”

The role of talent

Talent selection is another critical component of Vogue World’s strategy. Condé Nast’s extensive connections in the celebrity community provide a significant advantage, of course. McKenney highlights how the dedicated talent team works to find celebrities who align with both the event’s fashion focus and the brand’s marketing goals.

Chloe Kim

She continues that eBay, for example, wanted to find talent with an emerging audience that didn’t strictly align with Vogue’s right now. Gold medal-winning snowboarder Chloe Kim was a perfect fit.

“She had this story about her first snowboard that she ever used that her father bought on eBay,” explains McKenney. “On top of that, she has this great social audience. She’s this emerging kind of Gen Z, dynamic personality who doesn’t have established fashion credibility but fashion enthusiasm. She wants to understand it more, she has a playfulness around fashion. And that’s something that our talent team could understand.”

This story played out in branded cutaways during the livestream and will also be featured in the upcoming August print issue of Vogue.

McKenney says playfulness is important and you get a sense that the brand is trying to move away from an elitist image prevalent within luxury fashion. “That’s what I see in Vogue World now. It’s to be able to wink at some things and to have a sense of humor. What it really is built on is a foundation of such confidence in what the brand represents.”

The duo teases that a couple of core partners come back each year and conversations with them happen pretty quickly after the event is over. The next location, though? That’s top secret for now.

Travel + Leisure Readers' 25 Favorite Hotel Brands of 2024

Readers showered these hotel brands with love in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2024.

french tourism brand

How Voting Works

What readers loved, the full list.

Once again, Asia dominated this year’s list of the world’s favorite hotel brands, with nearly half hailing from Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong , India, and Indonesia. Travel + Leisure readers appreciate the impeccable service, the gorgeous decor, the personalized touches, and the special moments that make a stay at these top hotels feel magical.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Rooms/facilities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

Courtesy of Capella Hotels & Resorts

Each of the 25 brands on this year’s list are known for creating escapes that are unique and have a clear sense of place.

One fan of the Hong Kong-based Rosewood Hotels and Resorts (No. 15) wrote, “Each property identifies with the location and brings forward local experiences.” This sentiment was echoed by guests of Auberge Resorts Collection (No. 14), which opened an equestrian-inspired property this year in Fort Worth, Texas. “You very much feel like you're experiencing the best of a particular destination” when staying at an Auberge property, one reader noted.

Many entities on our list opened new properties across the globe in 2023 and 2024, which got some attention from readers, too. This includes two properties from Raffles Hotels and Resorts (No. 5) in London and Boston; One&Only Resorts (No. 7) in Aesthesis, Greece, and Za’abeel, Dubai; and Six Senses (No. 16) in Rome and Crans-Montana, Switzerland . And more outposts means more places to luxuriate, for those who have a connection to a brand. “I would stay at Six Senses every time I travel somewhere if I could,” one reader wrote.

As always, personalized touches make all the difference. Whether it’s a fashion emergency solved by staff at Oberoi Hotels & Resorts (No. 6) or a spa willing to curate the ideal mindfulness program for you during your stay at a Six Senses property (No. 16), these brands go above and beyond when you’re away from home.

This year’s No. 1 hit all of these marks. Read on for more details on why T+L readers picked Capella Hotels & Resorts as the world’s best hotel brand.

Capella Hotels & Resorts

For the second year in a row, Singapore-based Capella takes the No.1 spot as the world’s best hotel brand. Readers were impressed by the polished service, impeccable design, exquisite restaurants, and friendly staff. While most of its nine existing properties are in Asia destinations like Bali, Bangkok, Hanoi, and Singapore, the brand expanded into Australia last year with the opening of the Capella Sydney , which occupies a meticulously renovated government building. The hotel — which has 192 guestsroom and suites, as well as three buzzy restaurants — has been credited with helping to revitalize the city’s Central Business District. As of May 2024, new Capella hotels are under construction in Riyadh, the Maldives, Kyoto, and, coming next this winter, Taipei.

Le méridien opens first australian hotel, grows pipeline by 40 more.

Le Méridien Al Marjan Island Resort & Spa will open in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, in 2026.

Last year, Marriott opened its first hotel in Australia belonging to the “distinctive premium” Le Méridien brand in what was a former theater, cinema and nightclub. The 235-room hotel overlooks Parliament House and is in the center of the city’s high-end shopping and dining district. Le Méridien Melbourne is more than just a new hotel. It’s a symbol of Marriott growth strategy to expand in new and emerging markets.

Currently, there are over 115 Le Méridien hotels in 35 countries and territories, but things are about to change and fast.

A guest room at the new Le Méridien Melbourne

More than 40 planned openings are in the works, mostly in the Asia-Pacific region, but the brand’s “savor the good life” mantra is not stopping there. Its European brand roots will see it open new hotels around the world opening up more opportunities for Marriott Bonvoy members to earn and redeem their points.

Global growth pipeline

Le Méridien Shenzhen, Bao'an is a new opening for the brand in China.

Asia-Pacific is not a new region to Marriott International, which operates dozens of its brands there from luxury to select-service properties. But, it is a growth opportunity for Le Méridien. Especially key are the important Chinese and Indian markets, two areas that are drawing attention from hotel brands globally despite local regulations that pose hurdles.

But, things are changing, says Jesper Palmqvist , area director for the Asia-Pacific region at CoStar's hospitality analytics division STR. In a recent podcast for Hotel News Now, he says streamlined regulations are finally opening the door for more growth in the most populated country, India.

Both China and India have been targets for the brand with recent openings including Le Méridien Hualien Resort (last December); Le Méridien Amritsar (last July) and Le Méridien Shenzhen, Bao’an in February of this year. Of the 40 planned in the Asia-Pacific region, nearly half of them are in China. On top of those, nine more are in the works with their locations to be announced soon.

“We have seen a lot of growth momentum for Le Méridien this year,” says Jennifer Connell, global brand leader, Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts and vice president, distinctive premium brands for Marriott International. “With two hotel signings in Canada last week alone and meaningful development interest in markets across the globe, it’s been a really exciting time for the brand.”

Le Méridien Lav, Split was the launching point for the brand's new Whispering Angel partnership from ... [+] its Le Scoop gelato program.

Connell points to the European-infused “savor the good life” positioning as part of the reason the brand resonates with both owner and consumer audiences looking for something different in their hotel stay.

Rooted in aviation, the brand features hotels in urban markets as well as resorts where roughly one third of its portfolio is. It is also growing its collection of airport hotels with a recently announced near the Denver International Airport and has one in the pipeline next to John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California.

The brand will add its sixth hotel in Africa soon with a new hotel coming to the island of Zanzibar in Tanzania.

A deep history in travel

Le Méridien Etoile in Paris was the first hotel for the brand.

Of the more than 30 Marriott Bonvoy brands, Le Méridien has one of the more unusual backgrounds with a lot of European history . It dates back to the 1960s and was started by Air France to house its passengers and crew in the destinations it served. Air France was one of many airlines to operate a network of hotels along its route network (others include American Airlines, ANA and the former Swissair).

Air France Concorde airplane at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport (CDG) in France. The airline made ... [+] history as one of only two network airlines to fly the plane as part of its transatlantic route map.

Le Méridien was born in an era of glamorous travel and meant to give Air France passengers a chance to slow down and relax between trips. Even today, this sense of nostalgia is apparent in hotel design. For example, the new Le Méridien Melbourne has vintage travel posters from Air France on display. Across the globe, hotels offer signature Au Soleil programming with a “golden hour experience” during the summer months where guests can sip a cocktail, enjoy a local snack and relax at the end of the day.

Hotels for the senses

Le Méridien Sparkling is the brand's dedicated menu of sparkling cocktails and drinks, which it ... [+] ramps up in the summer months. This includes its partnership with Whispering Angel.

Au Soleil evening rituals deliver the idea to slow down and relax. A new partnership with Whispering Angel rosé taps into the growing popularity of the summer drink. The rosé sorbet flavor was created in by Chef Meredith Hayden of Wishbone Kitchen and comes in a glass cone served over a chic glass of Whispering Angel.

Le Scoop is the brand's signature gelato program, and in many destinations, they have local flavors ... [+] or use regional ingredients.

Hayden says the design reflects the vintage caviar ice baths and the cocktail sidecar used decades ago. Many hotels feature their sorbet sidecar with chilled treats available at all hours of the day, including one prepared with Whispering Angel. Depending on the property, some hotels also have rosé popup bars by the pool or in the lobby.

Around the world, master baristas prepare and serve Illy coffee drinks in the same way that European ... [+] cafes do.

European-style café culture is another feature of hotels with barista-made Illy espresso coffee on the menu at more than 100 hotels. For more than a decade Le Méridien has been working with Illy to serve drinks from its global menu.

The hotel brand's room keys have become somewhat of a collector's item among frequent guests.

Each property has a calming fragrance diffused in the lobby where mid-century design with accents from the Mediterranean and French Riviera are a common theme. Curated soundtracks in elevators and public areas that change from morning to evening. Another hallmark of the brand is its art programming with eclectic, local art on display in hotels. Even the room key cards boast different designs that have made them somewhat of a collector’s item among frequent guests.

In Delhi, guests can show their room keys for free access to the Palette Art Gallery.

Those key cards open more than just guest room doors. Dubbed the Unlock Art program, guests can flash their room key at area art museums or cultural venues for free access, another way that O’Connell says they want guests to “embrace that sense of slowing down and enjoying their trip, which, for many, is a welcomed respite from the glorified hustle culture we’ve become accustomed to.”

It’s the idea that each hotel tells its own story.

A local mural designed for the porte cochere of the Melbourne property.

The Melbourne property tapped local artists, sommeliers and food and beverage brands when designing the hotel. On the menu are bottled cocktails by The Everleigh Bottling Co., a local craft cocktail brand and instead of Illy, the hotel serves coffee from Melbourne-based specialty roaster Axil.

Le Méridien Melbourne has a rooftop pool in the heart of the city center, which is rare for hotels, ... [+] especially in a historic building.

Guest rooms feature art and design books on shelves, old-fashioned board games and Yamaha MusicCast 500 turntables featuring records from musicians like James Brown and Prince, who had performed onsite years ago. There is also an “Art of Noticing” self-guided walking tour that guests can participate in around the neighborhood.

In Goa, India, like at all proprties, Le Méridien Hub is a place to gather for evening cocktails ... [+] with shared appetizer plates.

Among Marriott’s nearly three dozen brands , Le Méridien dedicates itself to local art, culture and design in a way that is far from cookie cutter. And its summertime programming brings a bit of its Mediterranean and French heritage to cities around the globe.

During the one-day strike, which is set to kick off next Wednesday at 5 a.m., union members will ultimately decide whether they want to extend the walkout in the run-up to the Games. The dispute is unlikely to result in flight cancellations, however it could disrupt travel in and out of the capital by causing baggage and security delays. There’s no word on how the strike could impact the private-jet industry, though.

The Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports will be the main entry points for foreign visitors, which include spectators and athletes alike. The French newspaper Le Monde estimated that up to 350,000 people would be arriving in the city daily through its airports, with competitors expected to begin arriving on July 18 when the Olympic Village opens. To accommodate the athletes and their equipment, a temporary oversized baggage terminal at Paris CDG has been installed to handle everything from kayaks to vaulting poles and bikes.

Previously, Air France -KLM announced it expects to lose hundreds of millions in revenue from June to August as more tourists opt to steer clear of Paris during the Olympics. The airline group noted a “significant avoidance” of the City of Light from both foreigners and residents, who are either postponing their vacation or proposing alternate travel plans. “Travel to and from France is expected to normalize after the Olympic Games, with encouraging demand levels projected for the end of August and the month of September,” the airline group said in a statement.
