Viking Venus

Launched in May 2021 from Portsmouth, England, Viking Venus features modern amenities and a contemporary design. The ship can hold 930 passengers and 465 crew members. Amenities include multiple pools and shops, as well as a cinema, a live performance theater, a jazz lounge, a spa, a fitness center and a salon. Plus, you can attend a lecture or discussion with the onboard historian, who helps educate passengers on the cultural aspects of each destination. An onboard cooking school, The Kitchen Table, also allows guests to learn about each destination's unique cuisine. 

Cruisers can enjoy daily updated food options at The Restaurant, diverse cuisine at the World Café, expertly paired tasting menus at The Chef's Table and Italian favorites at Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. There are eight dining venues on board in total, in addition to the ship's cooking school at The Kitchen Table and 24/7 room service.

When it's time to rest, there are six types of accommodations to choose from – all with private verandas. The standard Veranda Staterooms measure 270 square feet and feature plush beds, free Wi-Fi access and flat-screen TVs. Higher-tier rooms come with extras like priority shore excursion reservations, priority spa reservations, in-room coffee and free laundry services. Plus, travelers in these cabins will have more space: Rooms reach up to 1,448 square feet and may include separate living and dining areas.

The Viking Venus sails to popular European destinations like Barcelona , Athens , Bangkok , Istanbul , Rome , London , Sydney and Stockholm .

Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests at capacity, 3,172 guests at maximum occupancy and 1.048 crew members. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated. 

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Viking Saturn

Debuted in May 2023, the adults-only Viking Saturn has the capacity to hold 930 passengers and 465 crew members. Travelers love the ship's clean Scandinavian design and compact size, which allows it to dock in smaller ports that larger cruise ships cannot reach.

On board, travelers have access to a slew of amenities, including a fitness center, a spa, a library, a state-of-the-art theater, a hair salon, an infinity pool and more. A resident historian is also on board to offer lectures and educational programming about upcoming port destinations. When hunger strikes, Viking Saturn offers an array of dining options, from fresh seafood at World Café to afternoon tea service at Wintergarden to traditional Norwegian cuisine at Mamsen's. Or, learn how to prepare regional dishes from your itinerary at the onboard cooking school.

Starting at 270 square feet, standard staterooms come equipped with king-size mattresses (which can be converted into two twin beds), flat-screen TVs, full-size verandas and bathrooms with heated floors. What's more, each accommodation includes 24-hour room service. Travelers who opt to stay in one of the ship's upgraded suites (which reach up to 1,448 square feet) have access to additional perks such as separate living areas and dining rooms, complimentary laundry services and a welcome bottle of Champagne, among other luxuries.

Viking Saturn sails to a variety of destinations in northern Europe (such as Bergen, Norway; London  and Stockholm ) and the Mediterranean (think: Barcelona, Spain ; Rome ; Athens, Greece ; and Istanbul ).

Seven Seas Splendor

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger, 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet). 

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater. 

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. For something more formal, opt for a French-inspired meal at Chartreuse, Pan-Asian dishes at Pacific Rim or Compass Rose, the largest restaurant on the ship.

Seven Seas Splendor visits a variety of European and Mediterranean destinations, as well as ports across Europe, the Caribbean, Africa and South America.

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers at double occupancy, 3,385 at maximum occupancy and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops. 

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Plus, rooms in The Retreat offer more space, measuring up to 1,892 square feet.

The Celebrity Apex sails to European destinations like Italy, Croatia and Portugal, as well as to Caribbean hot spots like St. Thomas , Puerto Rico , Belize and Grand Cayman . 

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. With 550 crew members on board, the ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.

Resilient Lady

An adults-only, LGBTQ-friendly cruise ship, Resilient Lady has a capacity of 2,770 passengers and 1,150 crew members. Since setting sail in May 2023, Virgin Voyages' third ship has received praise among travelers for its exceptional dining scene and exciting entertainment options. With onboard experiences ranging from acrobatic performances to comedy shows to themed parties, Resilient Lady is best for travelers who are seeking an upbeat and social atmosphere.  

When you've worked up an appetite from your activity-filled day, grab a bite at one of the ship's 20-plus eateries, which serve everything from Mexican to Asian to Italian fare. Although all food is included, reservations are still required at many restaurants. There is also no shortage of bars to choose from, whether you want to sample The Loose Cannon's signature cocktails or sip some bubbly in the Champagne lounge.

Standard Insider rooms range from 105 to 177 square feet. All accommodations come equipped with comforts like flat-screen TVs, rain showers, mood lighting and convertible Seabeds. For more room, opt for one of the ship's RockStar Quarters. These upgraded suites feature extras like a terrace with a hammock, European king-size mattresses and spacious marble bathrooms.

Resilient Lady sails to a variety of destinations in Europe and the South Pacific, including top destinations such as Athens, Greece ; Sydney ; and Dubrovnik, Croatia .

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The Wake boasts the most ambiance of all eateries on Virgin Voyages vessels by far, so make sure to lock in reservations when you can. This upscale restaurant offers prime entrees with plenty of upgrade options for those who want to splurge. This establishment also features huge windows that provide incredible views of the ocean from the back of the ship. –  Holly Johnson, Contributor

Viking Jupiter

Debuted in February 2019, Viking Jupiter is the cruise line's sixth ocean vessel. The ship sleeps up to 930 guests in luxurious staterooms that include everything from large bathrooms to comfortable king-sized beds. As an added bonus, each room is equipped with free Wi-Fi access.

Travelers will have the opportunity to indulge in several onboard activities. They can visit the spa's snow grotto and chill beneath the snowflakes, go for a swim in the infinity pool or let their worries melt away in the hot tub. The Bar and The Living Room offer additional spaces to unwind with a cocktail or mingle with fellow cruisers.

For afternoon tea and light snacks, travelers can stop by Wintergarden, or for a heartier meal, the main dining room, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant or World Café offer scrumptious European delicacies, Chinese fare and everything in between. In the evening, cruisers can catch a live show in The Theater or a destination-themed movie in one of two onboard cinemas.

Recent travelers were wowed by the ship, appreciating its tasteful, minimalist decor. They also found the food delicious and suggested purchasing the upgraded drink package.

Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Cruises' first new ship in more than a decade can hold up to 1,200 passengers and 800 crew members. Vista is the inaugural ship in Oceania's Allura Class, featuring top-of-the-line amenities like a culinary center, an artist loft and an extensive library, along with facilities like a pool, a casino, a spa and a fitness center. Additionally, Vista offers enrichment opportunities like destination-focused seminars led by guest speakers and dynamic musical performances.

One of the highlights of Oceania Vista is its wide array of dining venues, from specialty restaurants like Ember (American fare) and Toscana (Italian cuisine) to the poolside Waves Grill and daily afternoon tea service. In the evening, guests can grab a drink at their choice of several bars and lounges; Vista's immersive mixology program utilizes innovative techniques and trends to create an elevated cocktail experience.

Vista's well-appointed staterooms – which range from 240 to 2,400 square feet – boast balconies, queen-size beds, rainforest showers, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, among other amenities. If you splurge for a suite, you'll enjoy added benefits like iPads, cashmere blankets, complimentary laundry and shoeshine services, access to the Executive Lounge and butler service.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The design of the Vista creates more expansive and contemporary public areas than other ships in Oceania's fleet, so even when the ship is at full capacity, it never feels crowded. Holland America Line’s 2026 Europe Season Allows Guests to Choose Their Own Mediterranean Adventure or Explore More Ports in Northern Europe

Rotterdam headlines eight departure ports from which guests can visit more than 175 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and 35 countries

Seattle, Wash., July. 31, 2024 — Holland America Line opened its 2026 Europe season for booking with four ships taking guests on Mediterranean , Northern Europe , Canary Island and transatlantic cruises ranging from seven to 42 days. The carefully crafted itineraries grant travelers a wide array of options and new ports to choose from when booking their European holiday.

Exploring the Mediterranean aboard Oosterdam

Oosterdam will play host to those traversing the Mediterranean. Guests seeking a shorter vacation can choose between seven- to-14-day itineraries departing from five homeports: Lisbon, Portugal; Piraeus (Athens), Greece; Barcelona, Spain; and Civitavecchia (Rome) and Trieste (Venice), Italy. Travelers who covet a more immersive look at the region, however, can combine these itineraries for an even more in-depth exploration of the Med. A series of 28 Collectors’ Voyages spanning from 14 to 27 days are available for booking; up to 21 days can be sailed with no repeat ports.

“There’s so much to see throughout the Mediterranean region and by creating itineraries from multiple homeports we’re giving our guests the opportunity to explore more ports and countries in an exciting way we haven’t offered before. The range of options we’ve put together really allows travelers to choose their own, ideal Mediterranean adventure,” said Paul Grigsby, Holland America Line’s vice president of revenue planning and deployment. “Further, we made sure to listen to guest feedback when crafting these itineraries: We’ve included some of our most requested calls, including Sicily and Portofino — two of 11 ports of call in Italy. And for the first time in over 15 years, we’re returning to St. Tropez, France.”

Two Pinnacle-Class Ships Explore Northern Europe

Guests seeking to explore Northern Europe can climb aboard Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam. The two Pinnacle-Class ships will return to homeport in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the premier hub to explore Europe. And Nieuw Statendam will return to Dover, England, in 2026, offering alternate itineraries for those wishing to sail roundtrip from the U.K. on select sailings.

The 2026 offerings allow guests to book popular favorites, including an increased number of seven-day cruises to Norway’s fjords as well as seven-day open-jaw sailings between Reykjavik, Iceland, and Rotterdam . Guests can also select from a series of “14-Day Baltic and Scandinavian Capitals” cruises, many of which feature overnights or late-night calls in Oslo, as well as ports in Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Denmark. 

Additionally, this season in Northern Europe Holland America Line will introduce four new ports, including Aberdeen, Scotland; Kalundborg, Denmark; and Odda, Norway, aboard Rotterdam; and Portsmouth, England, aboard Nieuw Statendam.

“ We’re excited to see both Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam returning to homeport in our historic home. Aboard the two ships, guests can experience over 80 ports across 20 countries, as far west as the Canary Islands in Spain, and as far east as Finland and the Baltic States,” said Beth Bodensteiner, Holland America Line’s chief commercial officer. “And for guests seeking a longer visit to see sites like Dover Castle, the famous White Cliffs or London, they can choose to embark in Dover on a dozen of Nieuw Statendam’s itineraries.”

Transatlantic:

·       In March and April, Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam cross the Atlantic Ocean from Fort Lauderdale to Rotterdam on 14-day cruises; Oosterdam crosses from Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona on a 14-day itinerary.

·       In October and November, Nieuw Statendam , Rotterdam and Oosterdam sail to Fort Lauderdale via Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Barcelona, respectively, on 14- and 15-day cruises.

Holland America to Sail Trio of Solar Eclipse Cruises in Europe — What to Know

The cruise line is offering 3 different cruises to see the solar eclipse in 2026.

Holland America Line is offering a unique way to see the solar eclipse that will cross over Europe in 2026 by sailing a trio of cruises into the path of totality.

The cruises, which will launch in July and August 2026, will bring space enthusiasts to the Mediterranean and to the western coast of Iceland, Holland America shared with  Travel + Leisure . They follow  similar cruises the company sailed earlier this year  for the Great American Solar Eclipse.

“After the excitement and success around our 2024 eclipse cruises, we knew our guests were looking for additional opportunities to get a front-row seat for some of the world’s most special natural spectacles,” Beth Bodensteiner, the chief commercial officer for Holland America Line, said in a statement shared with T+L. “Our team has put together a lineup of cruises that not only deliver on that front, but also give guests in-depth exploration of exciting destinations and the premium onboard experience for which we’re known.” The shortest of the eclipse options is the 13-day Mediterranean cruise on the  Oosterdam , which takes off on Aug. 9, 2026, with plans to view the eclipse off the coast of Spain between Alicante and Barcelona. 

Then there's the 28-day Scandinavian voyage on the  Nieuw Statendam,  which sails on July 25, 2026, and hits the path of totality from the northwest coast of Iceland (with stops in Greenland and Scotland for good measure). 

The longest option is the 35-day "Voyage of the Vikings" on the  Zuiderdam , which includes seeing the path of totality from the western coast of Iceland. That cruise sails roundtrip from Boston starting on July 18, 2026, and includes stops in Halifax, Canada, Greenland, Reykjavik, Rotterdam, Netherlands, and more.

The total solar eclipse is expected to pass across the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal, and northern Spain on Aug. 12, 2026,  according to the National Solar Observatory  (NSO). While partial eclipses can occur every few months, total solar eclipses tend to happen just about every 18 months.

Beyond the solar eclipse,  Holland America  is also offering cruises to see the  Northern Lights  and spend five days above the Arctic Circle in 2026 on both the  Rotterdam  and the  Nieuw Statendam .

Discover some of the best places to visit in Europe in May, when the continent awakens from its winter slumber with the warmth of spring. Days are longer, the weather warmer, and the queues shorter at main attractions, given the summer crowds of high summer are yet to arrive.

A time for new beginnings, spring sees Europe at its colorful best. From the flower markets of Nice to the tulip season of Amsterdam, and the Hidirellez spring awakening festival in Istanbul, there is a whole host of things to see and do in May.

Looking for some inspiration as to where to go? Here are some of the best places in Europe to visit in May.

Athens, Greece

Athens is one of the best places to visit in May, especially in years when Orthodox Easter falls into the month.

Probably Greece’s most celebrated religious festival, it makes it a great time to take in this most fabled city. Tsoureki, a sweet holiday bread, and brightly dyed boiled eggs abound. The breaking of the Lent fast is celebrated in homes and restaurants with spit roast lamb.

Outside of Easter, the pleasant weather makes Athens an ideal May destination given it can be extremely hot in summer.

The National Gardens are in full bloom, the Acropolis resplendent against bright blue skies, and the seaside neighborhoods in Athens such as Glyfada and Vouliagmeni shake off their winter blues and start to open up for the summer.

Istanbul, Turkey

The arrival of spring in full flow makes it a perfect time to visit Istanbul , the Turkish city that sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.

Early May brings with it Hidirellez, one of the most important celebrations of the year in Istanbul . The festival takes its name from the protectors of earth and water, Hidir and Ilya, and asks them to watch over the coming summer’s crops with a series of events that include music, dancing and feasting.

While Hidirellez takes place early in the month (traditionally May 5 and 6), the “awakening of nature” it celebrates can be seen throughout the city in blooming parks such as Gülhane and Maçka Democracy Park, the latter being particularly pleasant thanks to its network of paths, sculpted gardens, and fountains.

Valletta, Malta

Simultaneously Europe’s most southern capital and the smallest capital in the European Union, the fortified city of Valletta is a joy to visit in May.

Established on a peninsula by the Knights of St. John, the fortified city is rich in beautiful baroque landmarks such as the opulent St. John’s Co-Cathedral, which are just opening up for the summer season. This means the key sights are much less busy than in the height of summer.

The first week of May also sees the city transform itself. Central Pjazza San Ġorġ is turned into a riot of color thanks to the 18,000 flowers, shrubs and plants that form the heart of the Valletta Green Festival.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

In most of Europe, May celebrates new beginnings. But not so in Amsterdam , where the brilliant colors of tulip season are coming to a close. This makes the display no less spectacular, though.

The season runs from the end of March until mid-May, with the Keukenhof botanical gardens just south of the city a great place to visit to see tulips in full bloom. There are more than seven million plants here.

Back in the city, the famed canals are lined with flowers and it’s a great time to explore both on foot and on bike. Discover open squares, winding alleys, and those iconic narrow houses of the city on a tour.

Perhaps catch one of the music festivals, such as the Music On Festival, which takes place in the middle of the month.

Lisbon, Portugal

The coastal capital of Portugal is steeped in maritime history, marrying that respect for the past beautifully with a buzzy, contemporary feel.

Part of its seafaring past is steeped in Portugal’s national dish and a cornerstone of Lisbon’s culinary scene: grilled sardines. Officially, the sardine season runs from March through August.

But savvy sardine-loving locals will tell you to wait until May for the absolute best offerings, eaten freshly grilled in the restaurants of the Alcântara and Campo de Ourique neighborhoods of Lisbon .

With the sun sparkling on the Tagus and off the city’s famed tiles, Lisbon seems to literally light up in spring. And while the city’s summer festival Festas de Lisboa officially kicks off in June, the excitement starts to build with a handful of anticipatory events and decorations starting to appear in late May.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

A favorite of location scouts for Hollywood movies thanks to the medieval walls that surround its historic core, Dubrovnik is often referred to as the Pearl of the Adriatic.

Its strategic position, handsome buildings, and views that reach out to the green island of Lokrum across the bay all add to the charm.

Old Town Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is one of the best places to visit in Europe in May, given the peak heat of summer is still a couple of months away. This is the ideal time for walking those city walls in Old Town Dubrovnik or hiking to the summit of Mount Srđ, a 1,200-feet peak crowned by the early-19th century Fort Imperial.

Foodies will love the food workshops, talks, and stalls of the Bavarin street food festival which is held early in the month. For those looking for a dash of Croatian culture, famed folklore dance ensemble Lindjo also begin their summer performance schedule in May.

Berlin, Germany

Germany’s capital, Berlin , has mostly been a place that welcomed all-comers. More than half of Berliners are said to have moved here after the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall.

That melting pot of culture is celebrated in mid-May with the Carnival of Cultures. The  highlight is the Sunday parade through the city. Chinese lion dancers, Brazilian samba dancers, and West African drummers are just some of the groups taking part.

More temperate weather is the perfect chance to take a cycle tour to visit well-known sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, or take in one of the city’s quirkier traditions: open-air karaoke in front of vast crowds at Mauerpark. Formerly part of the Berlin Wall, this popular park is also home to a regular flea market.

Bergen, Norway

Gateway to the fjords and the cultural heart of Norway , Bergen—surrounded by seven mountains and with a harbor of colorful wooden buildings—is a joy to visit at any time of year, but especially so in May.

Nature is at its most dramatic in spring here. The greenery around the Norwegian fjords seems both deeper and brighter, while melting snow means cascading waterfalls are more spectacular than ever.

The middle of the month (May 17th) is also Norway’s Constitution Day, the country’s equivalent of July 4th, and Bergen celebrates with gusto as parades, traditional costumes, and patriotic flair fill the streets.

Venice, Italy

In fairytale-like Venice , life is quite literally lived on the water thanks to the entire city being built over a brackish lagoon. The city’s iconic canals, lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces, provide the very arteries for life here to take place, with boats, ships and gondolas the preferred form of transport.

That changes somewhat in May with the advent of Vogalonga, the city’s rowing regatta. Held in the middle of the month, it sees various teams celebrate Venetian culture and history in a series of rowing events that can be viewed from the 400 bridges that span the waterways.

The weather here in May is warm and sunny, making it a great time to explore some of the lesser-known sights such as the lovely gardens of the 16th-century Palazzo Zenobio in Dorsoduro.

Alternatively, simply relax in a bacaro , a Venetian wine bar, over a glass of wine and cicchetti, Venice’s answer to tapas.

Barcelona, Spain

Beautiful Barcelona is without doubt one of the best places to visit in Europe in May. The weather is clear as spring comes into full bloom, the events calendar is packed, and the scent of summer and all its promise is in the air.

It’s a time to stroll around the Gothic Quarter , catch some early summer sun by the beach, and admire iconic sights such as Gaudí’s La Sagrada Familia. With the soccer season coming to an end, there’s the chance to worship at another temple—the Camp Nou stadium of legendary local team Barcelona FC.

Alternatively, take in Comic Barcelona, an expo dedicated to cartoons, anime, comic books, and more. May also sees the Night of the Museums when the city’s museums open late for free, while the city of Girona, 60 miles to the north, hosts the beautiful Temps de Flor flower festival.

Nice, France

May brings with it the first rays of summer, ideal for ticking off some of the best things to do in Nice , such as strolling along the beachfront Promenade des Anglais or through the vibrant markets of the Old Town.

For added glamor, it’s also a great chance to head eight miles down the coast to equally chic Cannes . Here, the iconic film festival is in full swing in May, offering the chance to potentially bump into Hollywood superstars while on a visit.

Rome, Italy

May in the Italian capital of Rome starts with a bang and doesn’t seem to let up for the whole month; this really is one of the best places in Europe to visit in May.

May 1 is the European version of Labor Day, with Italian trade unions pulling together for a huge free concert, while the Roman Maggetto, an extension of an ancient festival in honor of the goddess Flora, also takes place on the same day.

For those of a religious persuasion, this holiest of Italian cities has much to offer in May, too. The Lemuria in the middle of the month is an ancient rite to exorcize evil spirits, while the feast of St. Paschal Baylón is held annually on May 17.

The Pentecost (a moveable May feast thanks to its post-Easter links) sees a spectacular show at the Pantheon.

Those looking to celebrate nature will not be disappointed either. Both Roseto, the rose garden in the 17th-century Garden of the Jews and the azaleas at Piazza di Spagna are in full bloom adding a flash of color to the Eternal City.

Reykjavik, Iceland

With the cold of winter fading into a distant memory and the advent of summer bringing almost 24-hour daylight, May is a choice time to visit Reykjavik , Iceland’s capital.

Set among the craggy lunar landscapes of this volcanic island, the city’s brightly colored buildings brighten up the landscape and nature comes blinking back to life. It’s an ideal time for whale watching as the nutrient-dense waters surrounding the city tempt hundreds of migratory cetaceans.

Kotor, Montenegro

In an inlet deep in the Bay of Kotor, the Old Town of Kotor , a UNESCO World Heritage site, is said to be set on Europe’s southernmost fjord.

Sitting at the foot of a towering cliff face, its medieval streets and buildings are delightful in May, with just a handful of discerning tourists contrasting sharply with the numbers who visit in high summer.

May is a great time to do some hiking in the surrounding areas too. The slightly cooler weather makes it ideal for those wishing to take the winding staircase to medieval San Giovanni castle, one of the best things to do in Kotor .

Overlooking the town from around 900 feet, it offers great views over the town, the surrounding countryside and the bay below.

Tallinn, Estonia

The Estonian capital of Tallinn is a fascinating mix of old and new, the UNESCO-listed Old Town contrasting with a modern digital industry packed with start-ups that has seen some dub the city “Europe’s Silicon Valley”.

The Old Town takes pride of place in May though thanks to Tallinn Day on May 15, officially the city’s birthday, given that it was accepted in the Union of European Cities in 1248. The event is marked with a host of cultural happenings including street food, live music, and local crafts either side of the day itself.

Exploring the cobblestoned streets and medieval buildings is a joy even when there are no festivities. Other things to do in Tallinn include visiting city parks such as Kadriorg and Telliskivi Creative City. A booming creative district, it has some great cafés, and a weekly flea market on Saturdays.
