Are you someone who loves those hairpin curves? Go on an 18-hairpin drive to explore the calm and silence of lush green forests at Sirumalai. The place with its dense forest along with its mythological relevance is a weekend getaway for the people in Dindigul and Madurai.

Situated at an altitude of 1,600 metres above sea level, the Sirumalai mountain ranges offer a spectacular view to visitors, with their greenery and breathtaking viewpoints.  There is an observation tower at the 17th hairpin bend, and visitors stop over here to enjoy the scenery below. Pilgrims come here to visit Annai Velankanni Church and Vellimalai Murugan Temple. The ecologically vulnerable place is spread across 60,000 acres of land, and is a treasure house of rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. The hill ranges have a tropical mix of dry deciduous forests and semi-evergreen forests. 

A banana variety known as Sirumalai Hill Banana is cultivated on the hilltop and is used in making panchamritam, (prasadam or consecrated food) at the Muruga temple in Palani.  

An artificially created lake known as Sirumalai Lake was built in 2010, where there are boating facilities. The hill has a mythological significance too.  It is known  as Sanjeevani Hills, believed to have been carried by Lord Hanuman to cure Laxman.  It  is considered to be part of the Sirumalai Hills. You can get a panoramic view of Dindigul and Chinnamalai towns from the Selvi Koil point in the mountain range. The tallest hill in Sirumalai is the Silver Hill, believed to be made of silver. It is said that sage Agastya Siddhar turned the hill into a stone in Kali Yuga. A 500-year-old Sivalinga can be found on top of the hill. Khandige Estate in Sirumalai protects the biodiversity of the Western Ghats, and is surrounded by reserve forest that covers an area of 20,000 – 30,000 acres. During the rainy season (in October and December), the area receives an average rainfall of 120-132 cm.

The place is 90 kilometres from Madurai and 125 kilometres from Trichy.

Since it is a blanket forest area, travellers are advised to buy food from Dindigul town which is 25 kilometres away. Varieties of deer such as spotted deer, barking deer and mouse deer are found here. The place is also inhabited by other wild animals like wild boar, sloth bear, jackal, slender loris and leopard. A Siva temple is located on the hilltop, and you can go trekking there .

Dindigul is a city located in the state of Tamil Nadu. Dindigul derives its name from the words ‘Thindu’ which means pillow and ‘kal’ which means rock. It refers to the bare hills which overlook the city. The city is located between the Palani Hills and the Sirumalai Hills and is a bed of fertile land apt for agriculture.

Dindigul is surrounded by many districts and cities. On its north are Kari and Erode districts, on its south lies Madurai and on its west lies Tiruppur and Kerala. The city of Dindigul is popular by various other names such as Biryani City, City of Locks and Textile and Tannery.

Apart from the majestic fort, there are also a few temples and holy rivers that can be visited in Dindigul. N Panjampatti which is located at a distance of 7 km away from Dindigul is also a must visit. There is also a 300 year old Roman Catholic Church which is worth a visit. Moreover, the Christ the King Church and the St. Joseph Church are other important churches of the city.

Close to Dindigul is the Sirumalai Hill Resort which is a pleasant hill station located on the way to Dindigul Nathan. Begambur Big Mosque, Sri Kottai Mariamman Kovil, Kasi Vishwanathan, Temple Kamakshiamman Devadanapatti, Thadikombu Perumal Temple, Abirami Amman Temple Anjaneyar Temple, Athoor Kamarajar Lake and Kamarajar Sagar Damare are a few sites which can be visited around Dindigul.

Another attraction is the meeting point of the rivers Vaigai, Maruda and Manjalaru which has become a popular pilgrimage site close to the city. Trekkers can take a short trek to the small hill of Mala Kottai which is located in the city. Chinnalapatti is another favourite place of visitors.

History Of The City

The most famous historical landmark of Dindigul is the Rock Fort which is located atop a hill. The construction of the fort was started by king Muthu Krishna Naicker of Madurai in the year 1605 and completed in 1623 to 1659. In the year 1755, Hyder Ali, his wife and his son Tipu Sultan came to Dindigul.

Tipu Sultan ruled the fort from 1784 to 1790. In 1784, Tipu Sultan’s commandant renovated the fort to construct several rooms and strengthen the walls. The English defeated Tipu Sultan in the Mysore War of 1790, and the fort came under them.

The sub-basin spans 4,279.89 hectares (10,575.8 acres) in total. This river is crossed by the Saathiyar Dam, built for irrigation purposes close to Vadipatti. This is the Madurai Saathiyar Dam ‘s catchment area.

Vellimalai Murugan Temple:

The well-known Lord Murugan temple, known as Vellimalai Murugan Temple , is situated on a mountain that requires 45 minutes to ascend from the valley. The nearby towns and villages are well aware of this temple.

Agastya Puram:

Named after the well-known Agastya Siddhar, Agastya Puram is situated in the Sirumalai Hills.
