It was an amazing show last night. I saw Cyrille a couple of years ago in Birdland in NYCity. She hasn't lost any of her heartwarming dynamism.

Next stop for me will be the New Morning in Paris on July 21st.

Wonderful show. Aimee's voice is superb. Rich and melodious, playful and serene. And she scats! Oh my, she can scat! Selection of songs was fun and broad, mixing well different times and places.

The band I fantastic. Extremely talented musicians in their own gigs but also fluid and graceful as an ensemble. And they have fun playing! Great show ready for next tour! Thanks Cyrille.

First hearing her rendition of Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" on a local jazz station, I was immediately captured by her beautifully smooth but real voice. Vibratos were placed in strategic locations to notice but not draw attention; Her voice becomes slightly raspy with her deliverance of key words allowing her deep-seeded and seasoned personality to be exposed before Cyrille's voice leads the listener back into an entertaining smooth jazz feel that requires subtle samba movement in your seat.

Then I noticed the complexities of her backing band switching rhythms and styles in perfect unison to create a range of moods and jazz-based deliveries without noticing the subtle shifts. Short guitar solos are provided by the atmospheric electric guitar of Michael Valeanu with modern world-jazz accompaniment provided by the band.

The actual show was all of this and more, situated in a classy yet beatnik style lounge overlooking part of the UCSD campus. Most of the pieces they played were grooving and jazzy renditions of songs made popular by an array of great artists throughout the decades; Including The Doors "People Are Strange", Nina Simone's "Love Me or Leave Me", Django Reindhart, and the jazz standard "Caravan". Some of her originals front her most recent album "It's a Good Day" were beautifully executed with battling guitar solos by Michael Veneau and the French jazz guitarist Adrien Moignard. Excellent modern jazz beats and aggressively solid drum solos were played by Rajiv Jayaweera who couldn't help but smile the entire time they played. And at one point the bassist, Sam Anning from Australia, and Cryille executed a beautifully complex duo with just the two of them sharing phrasings and communicative solo time. The bassist-written piece "Bamboo Shoots" was fun and captivating while Cyrille Aimee's original, "Nuit Blanche" required the fast paced dance movement from every single person in the room as the song's down tempo beat resembles that of a West Coast hip-hop instrumental from the Heart of France. All in all, the groups performance was a welcomed change to that of the usual jazz outfit, guiding the audience through mood changes and captivating stories told by Cyrille Aimee and her band. A fun and very influential experience was obviously had by all who attended. The only way the show could have been better is if their exposure reached a wider audience with more live-musician enthusiasts adding to the energy.

Winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition, Cyrille Aimée truly has jazz in her blood. Raised by a French father and Dominican mother in the northern French town of Samois-sur-Seine – the last home of Roma jazz giant Django Reinhardt – Aimée found inspiration in the music of Reinhardt and the freedom of the gypsy lifestyle, singing on street corners during travels across Europe.

Winning the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition in 2007 helped finance her self-produced debut album, and finishing as a finalist in the 2012 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition elevated Aimée’s visibility to a global level as a major new figure in jazz. A performer possessed of an infectious joy, lightness of touch and deep feeling for the lyric, Aimée released her breakout 2014 hit on Mack Avenue, It’s a Good Day , mixing Roma jazz inspirations, bossa nova, flamenco and the Great American Songbook. The album was an international smash, called “a bravura turn, presented with a smile” by The New York Times . For these performances, Aimée performs a cross-section of her wide ranging repertoire including music from her latest Daudel Records release I’ll Be Seeing You .

When she held up her cell phone for a recent video call it wasn’t necessary to see the thick curtain of greenery behind her exuberant tangle of curls to know that she was in a setting teaming with vociferous life. The hum and trill of insects and birds accompanied a conversation that started with her explanation of how she ended up living in a fairly remote part of Costa Rica’s central Pacific rain forest.

Her best friend from college is Costa Rican and Aimée has been visiting her there regularly for years. When her buddy got married and moved to the rain forest, Aimée started making regular treks to hang out, “staying longer and longer, often through the New York winter,” she said.

A few months before the pandemic, Aimée bought a plot of land next to her friends’ house, thinking she’d eventually put up a little cabin. But hunkered down in the jungle throughout 2020 and 2021, she designed and built herself a house.

“I did everything,” said Aimée, 38, who was born and raised in France and also grew up speaking Spanish due to her Dominican mother.

She exchanges Costa Rica for a seven-city West Coast beginning this week that brings her to Stanford’s Bing Studio on Feb. 12, Santa Cruz’s Kuumbwa Jazz Center on Feb. 13 and the SFJAZZ Center’s Joe Henderson Lab Feb. 18-19.

Some of the music she’ll be presenting emerged out of her months in the rain forest, where she shed the hustling mindset required for life in New York and the road. “The jungle is super loud, but one reason I fell in love with it is there’s the silence of no distractions,” she said. “Settling in, I could finally hear what wanted to come out.”

Slated for release later in the year, her new album “Inside and Out” is very different than her previous releases, which feature her mostly with small combos or in duo settings with master guitarists like Diego Figueiredo and Michael Valeanu (her collaborator on 2021’s “I’ll Be Seeing You,” her most recent release).

For her Bay Area gigs Aimée is working with a new set of musicians from Los Angeles, including pianist Sam Hirsch, bassist Max Gerl and drummer Anthony Fung (with Lisbon-born Pedro Segundo taking over the drum chair in San Francisco). “I texted Gerald Clayton for recommendations,” she said, referring to the masterly L.A. pianist.

She’ll be drawing from her expansive repertoire of standards and originals, including a few previews from “Inside and Out,” which features songs she wrote on guitar and baritone ukulele. The project started about five years ago when she was still in Brooklyn, but ended up on the backburner when Aimée moved to New Orleans in 2018. The problem wasn’t that she was having too much fun letting the good times roll.

“I didn’t believe in myself as a songwriter,” she said, noting that her 2019 project “Move On: A Sondheim Adventure” didn’t bolster her songwriting confidence. “It was even harder to go back after that. Then the pandemic hit and I came to the jungle.”

If the Costa Rican rain forest unlocked her muse, Aimée found an ideal creative partner in New York producer Jake Sherman, a pianist with a jazz background who’s worked with artists such as Meshell Ndegeocello, Bilal, Emily King, Blood Orange, and Andrew Bird.

Rather than recording with a band in the studio, she and Sherman painstakingly crafted each track layer by layer. “I’d come in with a fully finished song and play the guitar or baritone uke part. He plays the bass and keys, and figures out if it needs piano, Rhodes, organ, or something else.”

Aimée had already developed a solo act in which she accompanied herself by creating loops in real time on stage. She thinks of music horizontally and Sherman figured out how to tap into that skill set. After they’d flesh out a piece, “he’d have me scat over the whole song,” she said.

“We didn’t keep any scatting on the album, but he’d say, ‘Listen, what you did there, that’s a horn line,’ or ‘That’ll be strings.’ I wrote all the lines without thinking that I’m writing lines.”

As a lyricist, she describes herself as a work in progress who’s more likely to write in French and Spanish than English. Her mother tongues tap into more personal realms, and she’s found that songwriting can be revelatory, or even prophetic.

“The chorus of the title track says, ‘I will build a house so steady for you to come back to,’” she said. “You might write a line that doesn’t make sense now, but in five years it might.”

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
