EL-GOLEA Tourism Travel

"Our time in Algeria was tremendous. It was an unrivaled opportunity to experience the vast Sahara wilderness, visit key archaeological sites and to encounter traditional Mozabite culture. What is so special about Algeria? The answer is simple. Having been out of bounds to western travelers for such a long time, makes this place highly authentic and challenging to cross. Algeria is literally off the beaten path and presents itself as a highly adventurous alternative to the well visited regions of Morocco or Tunisia. With Azzedine we were one of a handful of people able to visit The Grand Erg Occidental. This was truly awe-inspiring. Erg is an Arabic term referring to a sand dune landscape formed by wind. At almost the size as Scotland, the Grand Erg Occidental embodies a tractless expanse of endless desert making it one of the largest sandboxes and dune complexes on the planet! Together with countless dry valleys (Wadis), Salt Pans, Rocky Plateaus and spectacular Oases this forms part of the even larger Western Sahara - an area of pristine beauty.  My personal highlight however were the Oasis Towns of the Ghardaia region with their very conservative and well kept mud-brick architecture. These belong to a close knit ethnic Berber Group known as the Mozabites. The region almost has a fairy tale atmosphere and kept reminding of the stories told by Scheherezade in One Thousand and One Nights. Access to this highly exclusive and restricted area was once more made possible by Azzedine and his colleagues. The experience and exposure to Mozabite life was unparalleled to none. There were Countless archaeological sites along our entire trip and each left behind a strong impression. Perhaps the most fascinating were the intricate rock art sites from the Later Stone Age, Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages. These showed a wide array of wild animal and hunting scenes with an almost mythological demeanor. The well kept remains of medieval villages and forts were no less spectacular and left the imagination pondering what life must have been like in the Sahara 1000 years ago.  I cannot recommend Azzedine and his colleagues from El Golea tourism enough. In a country that is still highly secretive and impossible to travel alone or without official surveillance - Azzedine guided us. We felt more like privileged guests as opposed to visiting tourists under watch and were able to experience Algeria first hand by staying at overnight homestays with local families. Thanks to Azzedine, Algeria has left a considerable mark and I look forward to returning in the near future to discover the Tuareg regions of Djanet and Tamanrasset. Azzedine will be leading this next trip and I am excited to be taking part in yet another adventure.

The very best of Algeria

Testimonials, some kind words.

Wanted to emphasise that I enjoyed last years‘ trip enormously. It was extremely well organised by you and your team. I was amazed by the variety found in Algeria and believe I have to return to see more at some point in time. Please do pass on greetings to my guide Soumia and driver Mohammed as well as the colourful character in Ghardaia who was about to get married. TAM was an experience as well. Greetings to the owner of Mouflon- I must admit that I forgot his name- and his kind wife who invited me to her house. Everybody was so friendly.

Rob and I wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed our travels in Algeria.  Both Azzedine and Mustafa were excellent.  Azzedine was efficient, knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble.  Mustafa, too, could not have been more helpful and did a superb job of looking after us.  All the hotels in which we stayed met our expectations.  We would have no hesitation at all in recommending Algeria and your company to others.

Jane & Rob

I am deeply indebted to my friend Ahcicene Segouini, who hasn’t only taken exemplary care of my tour groups through his company but also, at his expense, facilitated this journey. I was driven skilfully and with good humor over a very large distances by Mustapha Gueraini and was accompanied for the much of the time by Abdelkader Bensalah, who I have also long counted as a friend and whose acquaintance with antiquities staff through the country greatly facilitated my task.

With JourneyCart, we planned honeymoon tour to Mauritius. We got a decent hotel booking by Journey Cart. The hotel serves Indian food and it's located in front of Mauritius west coast beach. Mauritius sightseeing was also planned well, with rest day after an activity day. Overall, it was a very good Mauritius experience with Journey Cart's arrangements. Mr. Abhilash Sadhale

Journey Cart helped us to make our honeymoon trip to Kerala memorable. Team helped throughout our journey answering all of our queries. Most important aspect of our journey was the driver (and his AC car) who was with us all the time - he was very kind, fluent in English and Hindi and cooperative. Hotels were of extraordinary quality. Meal (dinner and breakfast) quality was also good. I really would recommend Journey Cart to anyone who is planning to make their holidays memorable with their beloved ones. Mr. Vishal Mohan Telangre

Since Sudan’s division in 2011, Algeria has been elevated to the position of Africa’s largest country, with some 80% of it covered by the sands of the Sahara. Without doubt its most striking feature, the desert is what draws many travellers to the country, but Algeria has so much more to offer the inquisitive and the adventurous alike. From its striking Mediterranean coastline to the spectacular mountains of the Fezzan, the landscape is awash with desert lakes and sand seas, archaeological treasures and a rich cultural heritage that makes it one of the most fascinating countries in North Africa.

Little known in the UK, Algeria is just ripe for discovery. Its northern landscapes once echoed to the sound of Phoenicians ships and Roman boots and the architectural reminders of those once mighty empires lie scattered across the desert vistas.

The architecture is a particular highlight of any visit to the country, with the ancient Roman ruins at Djemila providing a particularly fine example of its rich historical pedigree. Then there is Algiers, the country’s bustling, whitewashed capital, whose captivating Medina offers up an intriguing contrast with the modern city that surrounds it. And never far away lies the magic of the vast, empty Sahara - nine million square kilometres of legend, myth and adventure.

The temperatures in Algeria, particularly in the Saharan summer can be scorching. Therefore the best time to visit is October through to May when the cooler days make sight seeing more enjoyable. Do remember though that temperatures in the desert can go down to zero in the mid winter and surprisingly there is a high chance of rain at the end of the summer.

Luxury Group Travel | 16 Days | Limited to 12 Guests

  • Five off-the-radar UNESCO Sites: Roman ruins of Djémela, Casbah of Algiers, Timgad, M’Zab Valley, and Tipasa
  • Travel Algeria’s Mediterranean coast, through the high Tell Atlas Mountains, and into the heart of the vast Sahara Desert

Algerian novelist Assia Djebar called her country “a dream of sand.” The sweeping Sahara Desert dominates the broad North African nation, but conceptually it is just a small piece of all that can be discovered here. With a turbulent past of conflict and colonialism, a crossroads of cultures is experienced on this exploratory Algeria trip. The whitewashed walls and winding streets of the Casbah of Algiers introduce Algeria’s capital city, while Phoenician, Roman, and Byzantine ruins in Tipasa unravel bits of the complicated past. Travel along the Mediterranean coast to Spanish-influenced Oran. Head into the mountains to visit Berber villages, delve into Roman archaeology, and roam the ancient cliffside town of Constantine. Desert oases like El Oued skirt the edge of the Sahara, and between dunes the isolated Mzabite people practice a way of life nearly unchanged since the 11th century. In the heart of the Sahara, meet a camel herder and dine in a desert grove of date palms at Timimoun. Return to Algiers with a more complete picture of the ways Algeria has changed throughout the centuries.

Day 6: Constantine - Tiddis - Constantine

This morning a short drive to Tiddis, a rarely-visited, Roman town, clinging in terraces to the side of an ochre mountain. It is one of Algeria's most beautiful ancient sites, in spite of its miniature size, boasting all the trappings of a Roman town: paved streets, a temple of Mithras, a wonderful arch, cisterns and a minute forum.

Return to Constantine and enjoy a tour of the "City of Bridges," a dramatic city of precipitous cliffs and deep gorges and the lofty setting for one of Algeria's most labyrinthine Casbahs. Visit the city’s excellent museum (noted in particular for its Roman mosaics and Punic artefacts), the delightful Palace and Gardens of Ahmed Bey, the Ottoman ruler, then the Monument of Sidi M'Cid (WW I Memorial), the Mosque of Emir Abdelkader, as well as the Opera House.

In the late afternoon we visit several of the 8 bridges including Sidi Rached, the limestone bridge; Bab el Kantra the oldest bridge; Sidi Mcid with a pedestrian walkway and Saleh Bey, the newest bridge (which you will see from our hotel window). We also drive up to Arch de Triumph Monument that towers above Sidi Mcid.

Full day visit of Ghardaia, one of the five Mozabite towns that occupy the M’Zab Valley. The Mozabites are an Islamic sect that broke from mainstream Islam about 900 years ago. They practice ancient unchanged social mores. The traditional dress for women is a white haik—head to toe wool wrap covering entire face with only one eye exposed; and for men—extravagant pleated baggy trousers called saroual loubia. Their customs are similar to the Druze in the Levant. Explore the town, the market, the surrounding date palm and irrigation system.

We visit the traditional village El Atteuf and fortified village of Beni Isguen situated in a lush oasis. It was built in the 10th century and looks like modernity has passed it by and left it untouched.
