The home of Santa Claus and the most visited town in Lapland, Rovaniemi is best in winter when the landscape is clad in a winter white blanket of snow. Visit Santa Claus Village

Spend some time with everyone’s favorite festive figure in Santa Claus Village. The magical attraction is in Rovaniemi, the self-proclaimed home of Father Christmas. Here, it’s December 25 year-round and you can meet Santa on any day. This multifaceted attraction also features snow rides, restaurants and accommodations for anyone wanting to get into the Christmas spirit, even in July.

The village started out as a home for Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1950s, as she sought a place to stay just above the Arctic Circle. Visit today to see how it has become the official worldwide home of Santa Claus.

Wander around a main village square decorated with traditional buildings. In summer, when there are fewer visitors, you can experience the thrill of seeing the midnight sun over this picturesque themed village.

Meet the man himself in the Santa Claus Office, where you get to talk to the bearded benefactor on any day of the year. Read some of the letters sent to Santa at the Main Post Office, which is staffed by postal elves. This is a working post office, so send off some letters here and get a unique Arctic Circle post stamp.

Stop by some of the other attractions in the village, including husky and reindeer parks and a theme park with wintry rides. Stroll along the main street to pick up some gifts from the Arctic Circle in souvenir stores and handicraft shops. End your day by eating in one of the restaurants in the village, which offer hearty meals in atmospheric log cabins.

Although it’s festive throughout the year at Santa Claus Village, the Christmas season does bring extra joys. A month before Christmas, Santa himself declares the Christmas season open. Two days before the big day, watch as the gift-giver sets off on his journey around the world.

It’s Christmas all year round at Santa Claus Village, about 8 kilometres north of Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle. It’s a novelty to send greetings from the Post Office here, and there’s the chance to learn about the history of Christmas traditions. The place gets busy at the end of November when there are concerts, gift bazaars, performances by Santa’s elves, plus the grand opening of SantaPark, Santa’s secret underground grotto.

Sporting activities

Father Christmas has some competition. Sporting activities are popular at Ounasvaara, just outside the resort – there are nearly 50 different things to do here throughout the seasons. Cross-country skiing, tobogganing and snowshoeing make up the winter fixtures, while golf and bobsledding top the bill in summer. And the area is also criss-crossed with well-signposted hiking trails.

Reindeer sleigh safaris

Reindeer rides and Rovaniemi go together like turkey and trimmings. You can either try your hand at steering a traditional sleigh yourself, or sit back and enjoy the ride while an experienced guide takes you into the icy wilderness of the Arctic Circle. Some of the sleigh-ride operators also do visits to a reindeer farm, where you can meet the animals up close.

NI Children Charity Group Prepares For Lapland Trip

T he Northern Ireland Children to Lapland and Days to Remember Trust is set to embark on its much-anticipated annual Lapland trip on December 19, 2023, bringing joy, excitement, and holiday magic to 85 children facing terminal illness and life-limiting conditions.

This heartwarming journey, made possible through the generous collaboration of TUI, Belfast International Airport, Swissport, Santa Park and Wild Nordic in Rovaniemi Finland, promises to create unforgettable memories for the young participants, many of whom have never even boarded a plane before.

The Lapland adventure has become a cherished tradition for the charity, which was set up in 2008, and will transport the children to Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus on the Arctic Circle in Lapland, Finland.

The day will be packed with enchanting activities, including reindeer and husky dog rides, mini skidoo adventures, a snowmobile safari, magic sleigh rides, and a special meeting with Santa Claus himself.

Among the families eagerly awaiting this magical experience are the Beatties from Dundonald and Karen Toal and daughter Rionach Johnston from North Belfast.

Karen Toal, mother of five-year-old Rionach, expressed her family’s anticipation and said, “This is a dream come true for us. Rionach is so excited, telling all family and friends. We cannot wait.”

Jean Foster, General Manager, Swissport, Belfast, is part of the exceptional team supporting young travellers, their families and health staff on the ground at the airport. Colin Barkley, Chair of NI Children to Lapland and Days to Remember Trust, acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the organisations who make the trip possible. He said,

Trips like this are usually impossible for a family supporting children with extra needs, sometimes compounded by the necessity to carry medication, support equipment, and more.

“We take immense pride in lightening their load and offering support through a dedicated team of healthcare professionals, enabling them and their children to create lasting memories in Lapland.

The Northern Ireland Children to Lapland Trust has been a source of joy for more than 1,500 children who have had the opportunity to embark on this magical journey throughout its history.
