We all have at least one friend or family member who’s a bona fide Disney adult. They likely spend all of their PTO on trips to Disneyland or even an Adventures by Disney vacation , can be spotted wearing Mickey Mouse Crocs outside of the theme parks, and will always say yes to a Disney-themed trivia night. If you’ve already started thinking about that person, and you have a big celebration or holiday coming up that includes gift-giving, then you’re in luck.

Below, we’ve rounded up 24 of the best gifts for Disney fans that will bring a bit of magic and nostalgia to their everyday life. Some of these are perfect for taking into the Disney Parks, too.

  • Check out the clearance section: Many souvenir shops have a clearance section where you can find discounted souvenirs from previous seasons or special events.

Following these tips and seeking budget-friendly souvenir options, you can take home a piece of Disneyland magic without breaking the bank.

Rare and Unique Disneyland Souvenir Finds

disneyland trip gift ideas

For those looking for something truly special to take home from Disneyland, rare and unique souvenir options are available. Here are some top picks for unique Disneyland souvenirs:

  • Limited edition pins: Disneyland offers limited edition pins featuring special events, attractions, and characters. These pins are often highly sought after by collectors and can become valuable over time.
  • Original artwork: Disneyland features a variety of artists and art styles throughout the park, and original artwork can be purchased at several shops.
  • Silhouettes: Get a skilled artist’s hand-cut silhouette of yourself or a family member! The shop is located on Main Street.
  • Name Paintings: Located at Kaman’s Art Shoppes Kiosk in Downtown Disney, skilled artists transform letters and names into beautiful hand-painted images.
  • Caricatures: Let a talented artist turn you and your loved ones into a caricature! Each one is hand drawn and makes a fun souvenir.
  • Christmas Ornaments: Pick up a beautiful holiday ornament that reminds you of your vacation! Available at gift shops throughout the park, but Plaza Point on Main Street has the best selection.
  • Attraction props: Some shops offer replica attraction props, like ride vehicles, models, and other items.
  • Customized merchandise: Several shops throughout the park offer customization services, allowing guests to create unique souvenirs with their names or designs.

Where To Find Rare Disneyland Souvenirs

Rare and unique Disneyland souvenirs can be found in various shops throughout the park, including the Disneyana shop on Main Street and the WonderGround Gallery in Downtown Disney. Limited edition pins can also be found at merchandise carts and kiosks throughout the park, and attraction props can often be found at shops near the corresponding attractions.

Tips for spotting rare and unique souvenirs

  • Research ahead of time: Check out the Disneyland website or official merchandise catalogs to see what rare and unique souvenirs are currently available.
  • Talk to cast members: Disneyland cast members are often knowledgeable about the park’s merchandise and can provide information on rare and unique Disneyland souvenirs.
  • Look for hidden gems: Look for smaller shops or kiosks that offer unique or limited edition merchandise.

Following these tips and seeking out rare and unique souvenir options, you can take home a special piece of Disneyland magic.

40+ Disney Gifts for the Ultimate Mickey Mouse and Disneyland Fans

Inside: Disney gifts for the ultimate Disney and Disneyland fans with over 40 unique Mickey and Friends gifts.

We live an hour away from Disneyland. So my kids grew up going to Disneyland every month. It is definitely our family’s happiest place on Earth .

We went so often that at two years old, we could put my vision impaired daughter down at the front gate and she would lead us to the very back of the park to her favorite ride: Small World.

To say we love Disneyland and all things Disney is a bit of an understatement.

The most delightful gifts for Disney lovers and the theme-park obsessed

This is part of the L.A. Times 2021 gift guide. See the full guide here .

Growing up in Southern California often means growing up with theme parks. Although gift shops at the likes of Disneyland, Universal Studios and Knott’s Berry Farm feature plenty of items designed to catch our attention, for our gift guide we wanted to expand the perimeters a bit and embrace not just the parks but also their art and history.

3D Disneyland

"3D Disneyland" is Disneyland nostalgia at its finest.

“3D Disneyland: Like You’ve Never Seen It Before” is nostalgia at its finest. Old-school photos of Walt Disney’s original theme park are combined with a passion for traditional 3-D photography. Glasses are included, which help bring to life images of long gone attractions such as the Skyway or Fantasyland’s pirate ship-themed restaurant. You’ll want to linger and pretend you’re walking along the original Main Street or a more woodsy-feeling Frontierland. Expect a little dizziness if you keep the glasses on for long, but don’t expect to time travel with some side-effects.

Bear-y Tales frog

A Knott's Berry Farm classic returned in digital form this year.

This year saw the opening of Knott’s Bear-y Tales: Return to the Fair, an adorable video-game like animated romp of a ride with cartoon critters and lots of pies — a respectful and nostalgic 2021 endeavor that livens up the park by celebrating its history. The ride is a nod to the 1970s original Knott’s Bear-y Tales, a wild and wacky attraction overseen by theme park design legend Rolly Crump . Bear-y Tales is full of mischievous frogs, all plump and spindly contradictions that steal the show, and Knott’s is celebrating the attraction with these cute-but-weird plushies, a treat either for those who grew up with the original or just discovered it this year.

Mary Blair animals

Animal blocks.

These are not toys. But so much of Mary Blair’s art for Disney possessed a toy-like wonder to it, and these 12- by 12-inch maple cutout blocks capture her understanding of color as well as her whimsical view of living creatures. Blair, the principal designer of Disneyland’s It’s a Small World attraction, also had the ability to capture motion in her work, and these blocks look caught mid-frame in an animated film. They’re hefty enough to stand tall on a shelf but could also be framed. Hang them, and imagine you have your own Blair mural in your home.

‘a brush with disney: an artist’s journey told through the words and works of herbert d. ryman’.

A map of Disneyland in a book.

Long regarded as one of Disneyland’s master planners — also a pivotal contributor to the likes of “Fantasia” and “Dumbo” — Herb Ryman was a prolific artist in his life outside Disney. This gorgeous coffee table book hooks you with Ryman’s concepts for Disneyland’s early years and then keeps you engrossed by offering a glimpse into his mind. Told through Ryman’s own words, “A Brush With Disney” captures his restless spirit and ability to translate to paper the fullness of life around him. Whether it’s his fascination with the circus or his elaborate concept art for Disneyland’s “Indiana Jones” attraction, Ryman had an amazing ability to reimagine, reframe and simply document reality.

$59 | 👉 Purchase here

Boysenberry jam

Jars of jam and bottles of syrup.

Forget your artisanal jam. Southern California theme park fans know there’s only one jam that matters: the boysenberry preserves from Knott’s Berry Farm, an attraction as important to the local theme park as its Timber Mountain Log Ride.

$8.99 per jar | 👉 Purchase here

Claude Coats: Walt Disney’s Imagineer

"Claude Coats: Walt Disney’s Imagineer" and inside pages showing a colorful map.

Animator-turned-Walt Disney Imagineer Claud Coats shaped many of Disneyland’s early attractions, his expertise as a background artist bringing extravagant tableaux to life. David A. Bossert’s book focuses primarily on Coats’ theme park work, and in so doing treats large-scale and expansive environmental storytelling as the works of art they are. Many of Coats’ designs still stand in Disneyland today, and they helped to define what a ride-like environment would look and feel like.

Merry Christmas: The Christmas Card Art of Eyvind Earle

A book is opened to a display of holiday cards.

High priced, but an absolute treasure. Disneyland fans know Eyvind Earle as the artist who defined the look of “Sleeping Beauty” and as the primary inspiration behind the castle at Disneyland (and Disneyland Paris). But Earle was also a master interpreter of nature, using unexpected color combinations to heighten the majesty, awesome power and magical presence of the world beyond our cities. This book is hefty, possessing the look and feel of the tomes that would open Walt Disney’s early animated films, and it treats one of Earle’s lifelong personal passions — the Christmas card — with reverence.

$300 | 👉 Purchase here

Halloween Horror Nights collectible glass

Gaily wrapped boxes tower behind some cans, a hat and glasses.

A highlight of this year’s Halloween Horror Nights was a maze themed to “The Bride of Frankenstein,” and among Universal’s relatively recent Monsters-themed merch, what caught our eye was a vintage-style glass. The wraparound art is loaded with monsters and features stylized takes on Dracula, the Bride of Frankenstein, Frankenstein, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Wolf Man. Good news: Put a soda in there, and they don’t look that ominous.

$12 | 👉 Purchase here

It’s a Small World board game

It's a Small World board game.

Funko’s It’s a Small World board game is handy for those family nights when one is missing Disneyland. At its core, the game — for ages 4 and up — is relatively simple, but the real delight is the 3-D board. It pops together to create mini “rooms” for boats to travel through, with the ride’s signature clock tower at its center. In turn, it’s a game that understands the true appeal of the It’s a Small World attraction. No, it’s not its song; the ride is full of colorful scenes that we don’t want to take our eyes off of.

$25 | 👉 Purchase here

A Portrait of Walt Disney World

The front cover of "A Portrait of Walt Disney World."

Southern Californians are spoiled, what with Disneyland, the world’s preeminent theme park, in our backyard. But Disneyland also set a template that led to Walt Disney World, the world’s most visited theme park. Walt Disney’s initial vision for the Florida park centered on the creation of a living, working city known as EPCOT. This book by Kevin M. Kern, Tim O’Day and Steven Vagnini details not just that concept but also what it ultimately led to, which in a way is the themed resort as a living, working community.

$59.99 | 👉 Purchase here

Pacific Ocean Park: The Rise and Fall of Los Angeles’ Space Age Nautical Pleasure Pier

The cover of the book "Pacific Ocean Park."

This 2014 book is a must-own for anyone obsessed with Southern California’s multitude of theme parks, as Christopher Merritt and Domenic Priore document a place that was alternately of its time and ahead of it. While Pacific Ocean Park would ultimately fail in its aspirations to compete with Disneyland, this despite its oceanfront location, it advanced our understanding of what works — and what doesn’t — in a theme park-like setting. This is a time before IP (intellectual property) ruled, and theme parks would reflect the art and Space Age visions of its 1950s-1960s prime. But while the optimism it represented is timeless, the park itself proved not to be.

$34.95 | 👉 Purchase here

Tenaya Stone Spa gift card

Dramatic lighting and decor at Tenaya Stone Spa.

Theme parks, as regular park-goers know, are also places to relax.

Sometimes we just want to people watch or to explore the large-scale sculptures of the environment. Theme parks don’t always have to be lines and strollers and high-calorie snacks. Disneyland’s Grand Californian hotel has a beautiful new spa, and our only complaint is that in this late-pandemic age, it is open only to guests staying at one of the resort’s hotels. That being said, we know plenty of locals who plan getaways at the resort — or are trying to persuade a partner to plan a getaway at the resort — and may be looking for an attraction that’s more of the self-care variety.

Gift cards available in amounts $25-$500 | 👉 Purchase here

Walt Disney Family Museum jackets

A gray jacket with images on it.

Any Disneyland fan should keep an eye on the store offering of San Francisco’s Walt Disney Family Museum, as it’s a treasure-trove of vintage Disneyland periodicals and paraphernalia. But who knew the museum’s wares were so fashionable? Launching this year with an exhibit on the Walt Disney Studios’ World War II efforts was a track jacket dedicated to Fifinella, a character created by Roald Dahl and the Walt Disney Studios that would eventually become an insignia for the WASPs, the Women Airforce Service Pilots. Fifinella, a tiny gremlin, is a character full of life, and it is especially eye-catching on a black jacket.

Want something a little more well-known? The Donald Duck bomber-style jacket has you covered. Propaganda once, stylish today.

$69.95-$79.95 | 👉 Purchase here

Warner Bros. Studio Tour

A display on the Warner Bros. studio tour.

Locals may overlook a tour of a Hollywood studio for a number of reasons, but theme park fans should give the revamped Warner Bros. Studio Tour a visit.

The tour has been updated with a host of theme park-like trappings, including interactive “Harry Potter” exhibits that wouldn’t be out of place at Universal Studios’ Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Indeed, the Warner Bros. updates were handled by Thinkwell, a local firm known best for its contributions to theme parks around the world. They’re good for photos, sure, but the new exhibits are heavy on interaction and give guests a chance to play inside some well-known franchises.

$57-$69 | 👉 Purchase here

Wizarding World chocolate frog ornament

A collection of goodies.

Those who have been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter either here in Los Angeles or in Florida know that one of its highlights is its candy. So color us overjoyed to discover that the parks are selling one of its most popular items, a chocolate frog, in ornament form. While not edible, it looks, for chocolate lovers, absolutely delectable. This chocolate frog not only is safe for pets but also will last on trees for years to come. Online stock can be hard to come by, but the park’s shops have them aplenty.

15 Creative Ways To Reveal A Surprise Disney Trip

April 27, 2021 //  by  Mckensie Shiner //   Leave a Comment

Planning to book a surprise Disney trip to gift to someone in your life? Then, keep reading! It’s everyone’s dream to be surprised with a trip to Walt Disney World. The only tricky part is, how will you tell the person the news? Will you give a countdown calendar to your significant other or tell your kids they’re visiting relatives out of town?

Whoever you’re surprising, we are sure to have a great way to make the Disney trip reveal magical for everyone involved.

1. Countdown Calendars

Personally, we LOVE this idea because we have everything you need for this! A countdown calendar is a great way to let everyone know of your surprise Disney trip! On our Facebook page, you can find some of our free countdown calendars and print them out!

Feel free to hang it in plain sight or package it up like mail and give it to whoever you’re giving your surprise Disney trip to. This is a great Disney trip reveal and doesn’t take a lot of planning.

This is a great choice for those who don’t have a lot of time or for older teens/adults who don’t require a very extravagant approach, as younger kids may need a bigger surprise.

Join our Facebook group to access free printable Disney countdown calendars for your surprise Disney trip announcement.

2. Disney surprise box

Have you considered giving a Disney surprise box for your Disney trip reveal? If you want to give a memorable trip to the person you’re surprising, this is a great way to do so!

One of our favorite websites for sending a Disney surprise box, chock-full of goodies from the Disney parks, is Pixie Dust 2 U. From this site, you can choose a boy or girl box. Some boxes have contained the following items: Disney luggage tag, color pack, Minnie/Mickey drawstring bag, non-park lightweight ears, lanyards, and other fun Disney items!

Use the code “WELCOME2U” for 10% off your first order!

3. Disney Shirts Reveal

Another great way to pull off your Disney surprise trip is by revealing it with Disney shirts! Whether you are surprising your significant other, friend, or family member, this is another simple fun way to let them know what you have planned!

In order to do this, it’s important to incorporate their favorite Disney character or movie to make it all that more sentimental for everyone involved. You can also save the shirts and wear them for your trip!

A popular design for Disney shirts is the family vacation ones which normally have the family name, month, and year.

Check out our Disney shirt post here, which is all-inclusive when it comes to the relationship with the person you’re surprising.

4. On the way to the airport

A great way to surprise kids with a Disney trip is to wait until the last minute to do so. This approach can be even more exciting since they have no idea the surprise Disney trip is coming.

As you approach the airport, ask them where they think you’re going. Drop hints such as dressing them in Disney clothing or playing Disney music in the car.

Once you arrive at the airport, let them know what you’ve planned. Their reactions will be worth the wait!

5. Scavenger Hunt

For the adventurous person in your life, a scavenger hunt is a great way to reveal a Disney trip! Start with a small note in the house and lead to the backyard, garage, etc. until you finally reveal a clue that reveals the surprise!

There are SO many of these scavenger hunts on Pinterest and the possibilities are endless with this approach. However you decide to set it up is your choice, but there are so many neat ways to really make the person wonder what you’re up to! If you’re wondering how to surprise kids with a Disney trip, this is the way!

6. Going to Grandma’s House

If you are able to commute to Disney World, telling your kids they’re going to a relative’s house is a great way to surprise them. This approach even allows you to pack clothes for them and not have questions asked when loading up the car.

This is best for small children, but older children may appreciate this one as well. It definitely depends on the child, though! Some may feel overwhelmed when planning for one thing and getting something completely different. Surely, once they get there, they will be in their element!

7. Suitcase filled with Disney items

This surprise is a great way to give the person you’re surprising some extra gear for the trip and being extra thoughtful while doing so! I mean, really, who wouldn’t love a suitcase or bag full of Disney items?

Some items to include are a pair of ears, character hand sanitizer, character masks, Disney keychains, autograph books, and anything else you can think of! Bonus points if the suitcase or travel bag is Disney-themed!

For more Disney items you could include here, try reading our article  Disney items from Amazon!

8. Mickey balloons wrapped in a large box

Similar to the gender reveal trend, this Disney surprise trip reveal involves a large box and Mickey-shaped balloons! Simply fill them up with helium (or air) and cut the box open to show your surprise!

If you decide to fill the balloons with air, you will just have to pull them out by hand. That is why this is ideal with helium balloons so they float to the top!

You can find cheap balloons at your local dollar tree! These include Mickey as well as other Disney character balloons! Read our Disney Dollar Tree post for more cheap finds!

9. Invitation From Mickey

This Disney surprise trip is foolproof and just requires some paper, a p en, and maybe some colored markers and stickers if you really want to seal the deal! Writing an invitation from Mickey is a great way to surprise someone with a Disney trip!

Since Mickey is the star of the show here, it’s only right he sends the invitations out, to be honest. There are so many different options for what to say in this letter, but including one of Mickey’s famous catchphrases like “oh boy!” Or “see you real soon,” is sure to authenticate it.

Click here to shop for this trip reveal letter on Etsy!

10. Disney-inspired breakfast

What better way to let someone know about a surprise trip to Disney than by bringing a little bit of Disney to them? Especially when it comes in the form of food!

Make some Mickey waffles or Gaston’s famous cinnamon rolls and let them guess what exactly it is you’re planning for them by giving them one of their favorite Disney treats as a hint.

If you’re not a great cook or baker, it’s always okay to store-buy items, too. It helps if everything is easily identifiable as Disney snacks, but if not, simply have them guess where they can find most of these tasty treats! It should be pretty obvious!

We also have a recipe for Epcot’s Violet Lemonade here , which is a great addition to whatever you decide to prepare!

11. Customized Disney Tickets

An easy at-home Disney surprise reveal involve making customized Disney tickets! With this idea, you can pretty much do whatever you would like as far as designs go. You can use construction paper or cardstock and either design them online or handwrite them!

What better way to announce the surprise than to decorate a spot in the house and throw a mini Disney party! This is one of the best ways to announce this since it’s pretty obvious what is coming when you set this up!

Refer to our Disney Dollar Tree post to find some awesome decorations to do this with!

Shop for Mickey decor on Amazon here!

12. Disney Surprise Puzzle

This is yet another great idea due to the creativity that comes with it. It is also a great idea for kids! Give them a blank puzzle box and tell them the surprise is in the completed puzzle. They will be so excited to put it together and even more so when they realize what the surprise is!

There are hundreds of puzzles online for this Disney surprise trip reveal! You can find puzzles like the one below on Etsy here.

Disney surprises trip puzzle which includes names and photos of Minnie and mickey

13. Drop gifts as hints

Similar to the surprise box and suitcase full of gifts, this is nearly the same but a little dialed back. As you await the initial surprise announcement, you can start to give gifts that may allude to the surprise. For example, maybe give them a new Disney shirt and when they ask what the occasion is, say it’s for something coming up.

This can be done with virtually anything, such as wax melts, hats, or jewelry! Some great Disney gifts including the one below can be found on Etsy or by clicking  here!

14. Disney button

Disney buttons are an instant giveaway for a Disney trip and are perfect for anyone who doesn’t like to keep a secret for too long, or feels that the person/people they’re surprising will catch on quickly! By gifting a Disney button, you’re also giving them something to wear during the trip, which is always a bonus!

This great Disney button from Etsy can be found here.

15. Play Youtube videos as a hint

If you’re looking for another simple and. cost-effective reveal, this is the one for you! This can be as simple as playing the fireworks from Happily Ever After (which is on YouTube in HD), or maybe a clip from their favorite ride.

Even more simply, you can play a Disney promo video such as this one!

There are also hundreds of Disney surprise trip reveal videos on the site you could easily show them and then ask them what they would do if that was them… then tell them it is!

10 Best Gifts for the Disneyland Lovers in Your Life

It’s that time of year!  The time where, if you haven’t already – and you really should have by now – you start racking your brain for ideas for gift ideas!  And not just any gift idea, gift ideas for Disney fans.  Or people you want to make Disney fans so they understand what you are talking about when you refer to things like “the post Disney blues”, “what time is the 3 o’clock parade?” or “try to share my Dole Whip and there will be repercussions”.  Is that last one just me?

Here are some suggestions for you!  Some of these are Disneyland specific and others are just Disney wonderful.

2. Annual Pass – Would you like an annual passport to Disneyland?  Okay then.  No discussion needed here.  Unless you already have one.  Then maybe you’d like an upgrade to the Premier Pass which will get you into Walt Disney World and Disneyland!  Double the fun!

3. Adventures by Disney – I know this is way more than most of us spend on Christmas gifts, but if you’re going to be at Disneyland or in the area, there’s a cheaper option.  There is a one day Hollywood trip that actually departs from Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa .  On your tour you will visit the Sunset Strip, the Dolby (formerly Kodak) Theatre, and you get to take an incredibly rare behind the scenes tour of the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank.  Every single person I know who has been on an Adventure by Disney says it was worth every single penny.  They are amazing trips.  At $199 for adults and $189 for children (including breakfast and lunch), it’s certainly not cheap, but it’s the cheapest chance you have to experience Adventures by Disney.

5. Glow With the Show Ears – My first impulse is to tell you these are only for trips to Disneyland.  Certainly that is where you’ll get the most benefit out of them, since the lights and colors in the hats sync up to the music in World of Color and Fantasmic!  But these hats are just cool.  When a first-timer visited Disneyland with me recently, she bought the hats to take back to her daughters.  I mean, even apart from the shows, they’re just cool light up Mickey Ears!

6. D23 Membership – How about a D23 membership?  I know when D23 was first announced there was a general consensus of not much for a lot of money.  But D23 has come into its own.  The magazines are great fun to receive, the yearly expos (D23 members get a discounted admission) are a big hit, and the membership comes with several shopping, dining and attraction discounts .  I received a membership for my birthday one year.  It’s a very thoughtful gift!

8. Park Merchandise – Whenever I go to Disney, I usually get some little gifts that I put away until Christmas.  I love a little bit of Disney magic on Christmas mornings.  When she was younger, my daughter was overjoyed to wake up to the Disney Castle play set that her grandparents had given her.  That was hours of entertainment there.  If you forgot to get something on your last trip, no worries, you can order it!  Disneystore.com has a great selection, and you can also call (714) 835-0294 to order park merchandise.

9. Disney Ornaments – Here’s a great lower cost option.  Disney ornaments can be found in the parks, online, and in many local stores.  I’ve never been to an ornament exchange where Disney ornaments weren’t some of the most popular ornaments there.

10. The Unofficial Guide – Did you really think I was going to give you a list of gift ideas and not list the best travel guide around?  C’mon people!  Get it!  Or, at least subscribe to TouringPlans.com !

Another amazing gift for your kid for a way, way cheaper price is a personalized letter from his/her favourite character and a picture of the two of them together.

You can only have those two things at http://www.magicmails.biz

I was going to suggest my favorite Disneyland video, Disneyland Secrets, Stories & Magic, but it’s out of print. If you can find a used copy, it’s worth it. It includes a documentary made in 2005 about the building of the park with interviews of engineers who worked with Walt. It also has the 1956 film People & Places: Disneyland USA with a really entertaining audio commentary by imagined Tony Baxter and film critic Leonard Maltin.

That’s too bad it’s out of print, Robert! It sounds really neat!

In regard to #3 – the “Lights, Camera, Magic” ABD tour reportedly has been discontinued effective January 18, 2013, so this may not be quite the best gift suggestion (unless your time horizon is short)…

Ack!! Do it quick!

Boy, all of these would be great, but if someone got me Glow-with-the-Show ears I would be over the moon. I can think of a couple of people who will be getting them from me next year. I hope Disney keeps including them in more shows. Merry Christmas!

Hopefully Santa knows you want them, Jennifer! Merry Christmas to you too! 🙂

The non-fiction book “Disneyland’s Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide to the Disneyland Resort’s Best-Kept Secrets” by Steven M. Barrett

The fiction book series “Hidden Mmickey” by Nancy Temple Rodrique and David W. Smith.

I like the DVD “Disney Sing-Along Songs – Disneyland Fun!” for little ones. The clothes are oh-so-90s but it is such a cute DVD and a great way to help young children prepare for or remember a Disneyland trip.

Great suggestions, Annette. My kids loved the sing alongs when they were young.

Let's Travel Family

Disney Scavenger Hunt Clues: How To Reveal A Surprise Trip To Disneyland!

Sharing is caring!

Making the decision, saving, and planning a trip to Disneyland can be such an exciting time! You are ready to make those magical memories together and take a break from the grind.

Especially if you’ve worked hard to  plan a trip to Disney on a budget  while you’ve been saving and preparing.

Yet, how do you want to tell your children about the big news? You could just yell:

We are going to Disneyland!

Or do you want to make it a surprise? The surprise element can be so much fun for everyone, even the person writing the Disney scavenger hunt clues.

That’s why I wanted to share with you some of our experiences and tips for surprising your family with a Disney themed scavenger hunt.

Disney Scavenger Hunt Clues: How to Reveal a Surprise Trip to Disneyland!

Here are some things to think about when revealing a surprise trip to Disneyland:

  • How should we tell the kids?
  • Should we tell them right away, or should we tell them the day before we leave?
  • What about making Disney scavenger hunt clues?
  • How should we reveal a surprise trip to Disneyland to the kiddos?

CLICK HERE TO READ OUR ULTIMATE LIST  OF THINGS YOU MUST BRING ON A DISNEY VACATION.

When you plan your family to have a magical vacation in Disneyland, it can be a ton of fun for everyone to make it a surprise! I can’t tell you how many families do it this way and I want to help your family reveal a surprise trip to Disneyland too.

When Should You Surprise The Kids?

Disneyland Trip

There are a few things to consider as you decide  WHEN to reveal the surprise Disney trip.

First, answer this. Do you want the kids to feel the anticipation leading up to the Disney vacation? If you answer yes, then I’d suggest revealing the surprise at least 1 month before the trip.

This will allow you to have your little one (or ones) help you plan their outfits, watch the most recent Disney movies, and maybe include them in small parts of the travel planning.

Now, if you think you are good at keeping secrets and you’d rather surprise them closer to the trip, just be prepared to hide all the evidence. That means the Disney ears and hats need to be hidden like you do Christmas presents.

That brings me to my last point regarding when to reveal the trip. If you plan to give the gift of a family Disney vacation for Christmas, then you may already know ‘when’ to do the big reveal. When they are opening their Christmas presents!

Surprise Disney Vacation

Once you decide on  WHEN to tell the kiddos, then it’s time to come up with the actual surprise part.

Your timing might not allow you to wait too long to tell them. For instance, if you plan a last-minute trip to Disneyland as we did, you will have to come up with a quick way to reveal the surprise.

I decided that making a scavenger hunt was the way to go, and I only had 1 day to put it all together .

Here are my tips on how to reveal a surprise trip to Disneyland!

How Should We Tell The Kids?

First, decide how you want to tell your kids. Take into consideration their ages and how many children you have.

You know them best, so keep that in mind while you are trying to decide if you want to make it a big surprise or a not-so-big surprise.

If your children are very young, then you could simply give them a Disney present to open to reveal the trip.

Disney Present - Reveal A Surprise Trip To Disneyland

Another option is to let the kiddos know during a conversation when the whole family is together, such as during dinnertime.

However, a very popular option is to make a scavenger hunt for the kids to follow to find out the surprise at the end. This is exactly what we did and our kids loved it!

Making a Disney Scavenger Hunt Quickly

Putting together a scavenger hunt does not have to be super extravagant. I am here to help you make a quick Scavenger Hunt.

Try not to stress so much on all the perfect details, unless that’s something you really enjoy and you have the time. I, on the other hand, did not have much time when we were planning our trip to Disneyland.

I suggest after reading this post and using our ideas, go do another quick Google search or a visit to Pinterest. You can often get inspiration and fun idea on how detailed you’d like to be on your scavenger hunt.

I’m also going to share my ideas here to help you think a bit about how you want to make your scavenger hunt.

1. Be Resourceful with the Materials that you Have

Materials you have

Use materials you have around the house. If you have access to a printer and some colored paper, you could type up the clues and print them out easily. I had access to paper and a pen so I wrote my clues out.

If you have more than one child, be prepared for them to work together as a team. The definition of a scavenger hunt often involves teamwork and not individual hunting. In all honesty, your kids will not care if the paper is beautiful or not. They are excited for the hunt itself!

2. Write the Disney Scavenger Hunt Clues

Free-writing is a quick way to knock it out and then look back and make a few changes. Once I had my paper and pen, I just began to writing things down in my notebook.

I started out by thinking of the 5 or 6 places I wanted to hide each clue. Our family is a bit unique in that we are currently living and traveling full time in a  33-foot RV . So, our space is small and limited for hiding things.

You may want to make 10-12 clues depending on the age of your children and the size of your house.

Click here to learn how to plan a trip to Disney World on a Budget!

Be sure to number the clues so that you do not get confused.

Making your hunt into a surprise Disney trip poem is also another way to make the scavenger hunt fun. However, do not be hard on yourself if you are not great at rhyming.

I found that a great way to add a little extra challenge at the end of the scavenger hunt is to make a list of some main ‘clue words’ such as: fun, outside, rides, princesses.

Then use those words in different clues and underline the main clue words. This way, if the kiddos get to the end of the hunt and still haven’t figured it out, they can look back at each underlined word on the clues and try to piece it all together.

3. Add a Few Extra Treats or Surprises Along the Way

Adding a little more excitement to your hunt can be fun.  Why not give out a piece of candy or treat with the finding of a clue?

Be aware that small toys as ‘extras’ do not always excite the children as they are thrilled to finish the hunt. I found this to be true during our Disney scavenger hunt.

Disney Scavenger Hunt Clues

We gave a bracelet to each of our 4 kids hidden with one of the clues and they didn’t even seem to care. The kids were way too excited to finish the scavenger hunt and find out what it revealed.

Oh, and if you really want to give them a Disney themed gift , wait until the finale as you don’t want to reveal the ending too soon!

Examples of Disney Scavenger Hunt Clues

– Don’t be stressed, look where you get dressed!

– You’re getting warmer, but I am not. The next clue lies where it never gets hot.

– Getting the first clue will be a joy, look inside your plastic red toy.

– This isn’t a wild goose chase if you go to the place where you can see your face.

– Be ready to be in the hot-hot sun, where I’m sure you will have lots of fun. We are going to a special place, that will be sure to lighten up the birthday girl’s face!

– To find your next clue go to the place you find your brush, the one that you use to keep your teeth from turning to mush.

** The clues do not have to be publish-worthy – you are not writing a book, just a fun scavenger hunt for your kids!

If you’re not good at rhyming, you could try writing a clue with a number code. Such as 1 = a, 2 = b, 3 = c and so on.

The Finale – How to Reveal a Surprise Trip to Disneyland!

Surprise Trip to Disneyland

There are a few ways that you can do the finale. You can have the last clue bring the kids to a  gift to open that has a Walt Disney World shirt, hat, ears etc. This will hopefully reveal the Disney trip!

Or, you can finish it off with a  final clue  to get the kids thinking.

If the kids have not figured it out after reading all the clues, then you could have them look back at each clue together and suggest that they look at the highlighted or  underlined  words on each paper.

This is what I did and it worked out great!

I underlined the words such as ‘ princess ’, ‘ rides ’, and ‘ outside ’. Then, at the end of the scavenger hunt the kids sat around our table and re-read the underlined words on the clues.

Whichever way you decide to make the finale happen, be sure to have your video camera rolling. The look on each of their faces once they realize where you are going is priceless! We are going to Disneyland!!

5 Fun Ways to Gift Wrap a Disney Vacation

Disneyland / October 2, 2020 by Kimberly / Leave a Comment This article may contain sponsored content or affiliate links.

Want to gift wrap a Disney vacation this year? More families are giving vacations and other experiences as gifts because it's a gift that you can enjoy when you unwrap it, when you take the trip, and then for a lifetime through priceless family memories.

Whether you leave on Christmas Day or another time of year, it's fun to make the vacation look and feel like a gift on Christmas morning. Here are five creative ways to gift wrap a Disney vacation.

disneyland trip gift ideas

Mickey Balloon Surprise

This balloon surprise is about as easy as it gets, plus, it’s super cute too! Here is your list of supplies:

  • One Mickey or Minnie Mouse helium balloon from the store, with string attached
  • 2-5 regular helium balloons in coordinating colors to fill your box, with strings attached
  • Large card printed with “We're Going to Disneyland/Walt Disney World!”
  • Wrapping paper to cover the box

Buy your balloons at the last minute so they will float through Christmas morning. Attach the announcement card to the base of the Mickey balloon. Tape the ends of the balloon strings to the bottom of the box so they don't float away when opened.

Tuck the balloons inside the box and tape it shut. Wrap the box for Christmas morning. Get your video camera ready for the big reveal!

Mickey Mirror Surprise

Another easy and economical way to surprise your kids with a Disneyland vacation is with this Mickey Mirror Surprise. Here is your list of supplies:

  • One round hand mirror (preferably black)
  • One sheet of black felt
  • A flat sheet of cardboard – about half the size of the felt
  • Hot glue gun with glue
  • A card that says “Look Who Is Going to Disneyland/Walt Disney World!”

The mirror is Mickey's face, and you'll add ears with the cardboard and felt. Place the mirror onto the sheet of cardboard and draw two ears onto the cardboard. Cut the ears out of the cardboard.

Place the ears onto the black piece of felt. Cut two pieces of felt for each ear to cover each side of the cardboard. Cut the felt a little larger than the cardboard, especially at the bottom of the ear.

Hot glue felt to both sides of the cardboard ears. Leave a little cardboard unglued at the bottom of each ear. This will help them attach more securely to the mirror.

Hot glue the bottoms of the ears to the mirror, then glue any loose felt into place. Attach the card to the mirror, or wrap them together in a gift box.

Rapunzel’s Maze of Hair

With this surprise, your child will follow a trail of Rapunzel’s golden hair throughout your house. It leads them to a vacation surprise! Here is what you need for this project.

  • One skein of yellow yarn
  • One Rapunzel doll (or one for each child)
  • A note explaining that the child needs to follow Rapunzel's yellow hair for a surprise
  • A card that says “We are going to Disneyland/Walt Disney World!”

String the yarn around your house or yard. Place the instructions at the beginning and the announcement and doll at the end.

For Christmas morning, you could start the search at the child's bedroom and have it end at the tree. Or start it at the tree and have it end somewhere else. You can get as creative with this one as you like!

Social Media Surprise

Here's an idea for teens who regularly use Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter. This can work for any type of vacation – not just Disney.

Post photo hints of your vacation without a caption on your social media account. For Disneyland, you could post a picture of a plane, Mickey Mouse, or even a churro. If you’re headed to a more tropical location, post a picture of a palm tree, ocean, or even a weather report.

Post enough photos that your teen will notice most of them, but not so many that they'll figure it out more quickly than you want. After a few days or even a couple of weeks, post all the photos together in a collage with the announcement. Be sure to tag your teens so they are sure to see it!

Suitcase Reveal

Last, but certainly not least, is the biggest surprise of them all. If you can keep a secret long enough, my absolute favorite way to surprise your family with a vacation is having everyone’s suitcases packed and ready to go in the car on Christmas morning. They won’t even know that they are leaving on a trip until they walk out the door!

Guide Books For Making The Most Of Disney World or Disneyland

Disney World or even Disneyland may be all about magical moments but the key to making most of your Disney vacation is to have a Disney strategy in place.

Disney without a strategy is just another frustrating day of running after the kids in an overcrowded, expensive place while the Disney characters walk right pass.

That’s where the Disney Guidebooks come in.

You will find a large variety of them on Amazon – so which should you buy?

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World offers detailed and direct tips to make every WDW vacation count.

This guidebook has an insane number of positive reviews and the related app is great at planning a Disney World Trip.

The other recommended WDW guidebook is the Birnbaum’s Walt Disney World .

Birnbaum’s also has an Official WDW Guide for Kids .

Geared the younger audience, it has illustrations and interesting facts about rides that will enthrall all kids who can read.

How cool is that!

The Walt Disney World Magic guide book also has a lot of useful tips, inside secrets and planning information to make your trip smooth and easy!

Other good guides include the WDW Step by Step Planning Guide , and the Easy guide to Walt Disney World .

If you are visiting Disney California – then try the Official Guide to Disneyland or the Birnbaum’s Disneyland Guide or the 101 Disneyland Tips book.

For a Disney California guide that both kids and adults will enjoy, try the Going to Disneyland guide.

These guidebooks are the most practical gift for someone going to Disney world and work best for families.

Disney Parks Magic Band

The Disney Parks Magic Bands are officially the coolest gifts for families going to Disney World.

So what exactly is a Disney Magic Band and what does it do?

Using the Disney Magic Band, you can electronically load park tickets and room keys for Disney resorts so they never get lost!

The magic bands are worn on the wrist like a bangle or a watch.

disneyland trip gift ideas

The Magic Bands can be used to unlock hotel rooms, redeem Fast Passes, save and purchase Disney PhotoPass images, charge food and purchases to Disney Resort hotel bill, and more !

Magic Bands make entering and switching between theme parks and water parks easier with no tickets to keep track of.

Tip – If your family is Annual Passholder or staying in the Disney Resort, you will automatically receive Magic Bands !

For everyone else, we recommend purchasing the Magic Bands to avoid hassles of paper tickets and photo tags.

The magic bands are available in a variety of colors and have a fun Mickey Mouse symbol on them.

See all available colors as well as unique patterns such as Olaf the snowman from Frozen here .

Are you worried that your magic band will get lost?

To ensure that your or the kids’ Magic Band does not fall off, get a Bitbelt to secure your bands.

Disney Park Maps

This set contains all maps for the 4 Walt Disney World theme parks.

These are the exact maps that you get at the entrance to Disney World – having them in advance is very useful in deciding which rides to prioritize, where and what to eat, and hit the ground running at Disney World.

There are no such maps for sale for Disneyland because the California parks aren’t as complicated.

We had our maps from previous Disney trip and they proved extremely valuable while planning our trip with the kids, hence I really recommend them as gift for Disney trip.

They also work great in a Disney trip surprise reveal!

Disney Daily Agenda Planner

This book really exists!

If you don’t want to leave anything in your Disney Trip to chance then you absolutely need the Disney Daily Agenda Planner book.

Perfect for Type A personalities, this vacation planner has 14 days worth of planning pages.

There are separate pages for different activities and things you need to track of such as dining plans, reservations, must-dos, and more for each day.

It also has planning lists, planning tips, a plastic sleeve for storing maps, tickets, and more.

Disney Tip! Definitely add some of these practical must-have items as gifts. Buying anything inside Disney is very expensive!

Disney Backpack for Kids

Every kid needs a Disney Backpack to do Disney the right way.

Chances are you are going to be carrying the backpack for the better part of the day.

But carrying Disney travel gear is almost the rite of passage for anyone going to Disney.

This Disney Mickey / Minnie Mouse backpack is the perfect gift for toddlers while the drawstring Disney backpacks work great for older kids.

The drawstring ones easily fit water bottles, snacks, and other small items.

Or get this Disney vacation gift set with matching Mickey / Minnie backpacks plus Mickey / Minnie lanyards !

The ultimate gift for someone going to Florida Disney!

disneyland trip gift ideas

Sturdy Daypack

Finally, a gift that doesn’t scream Disney! A day at Disney is busy and tiring but so much fun!

A good daypack is essential to pack snacks, water, hats, sunglasses, souvenirs, change of clothes, swimsuit, diapers and more.

I love waterproof daypacks with lots of space and wide, padded comfortable straps like this budget Outlander daypack.

It has multiple compartments and folds down into a compact pouch. I also like that it comes in a variety of colors like the bright orange.

The VenturePal Daypack is another great budget option.

Otherwise, you can always go for a reliable brand like Osprey or Teton Sports .

Rain Jackets, Rain Coats and Ponchos

When we first visited Disneyland Anaheim in December a few years ago, it rained both days we were there.

We had to buy a Disney poncho from the park store and boy, it was pricey at ~$25/each!

If you know someone who has been to Disney for more than 2 days and didn’t have to get wet in the rain, then they are super lucky!

You can save so much by buying them online – this Poncho Family Pack of 8 Is dirt cheap and perfect to always keep in your travel bags!

While I personally like ponchos, I prefer raincoats for my preschool age kids since they are too small for most kid-sized ponchos!

We have the toddler raincoat by Columbia – excellent quality and works 100%!

Make sure to buy rain gear that’s lightweight and folds easily.

Keep a waterproof wet bag to stash the wet jackets away when it stops raining!

Also, it is always better to pack rain gear while planning a Disney Trip even though rain is not forecasted.

Water Bottles

Since we started traveling with the kids, food and drink-related items top my packing lists and gift registries.

Disney World and all Disney Parks are enormous and water bottles are absolutely necessary.

Sure you can buy one – but at $4 per bottle, it’s not cheap!

I make it a point to fill up whenever we pass a food joint or water spout.

Plus if you have pre-schoolers or toddlers then they ARE GOING TO WANT that Mickey Mouse bottle in the Disney Store.

It is much cheaper to buy them in advance and save a few bucks.

For toddlers, this Mickey Mouse sippy cup with silicone spout is just perfect while pre-schoolers will love the Disney straw cups .

You can also gift these 32 oz Mickey, Minnie, and other Disney character water bottles for adults.

Checking the Disney App for ride times and wait times, taking photos with Disney characters all take their toll on smartphone batteries.

Gift a power bank to your Disney going children or grandchildren and keep them connected and happy!

I have this portable Powerbank by Anker and it works excellently for my smartphones, iPod and more. It makes a nice Disney park gift.

Hand held USB Fans

The weather is always hot and humid in Disney World. These mini USB rechargeable hand-held fans are life-savers.

They are lightweight, fold-able and have 3-speed settings and perfect as personal fans.

We attach them to strollers and the kids are happy as clams.

Misting Fans

Portable or handheld misting fans are great alternatives to USB fans.

The misting fans will spray water and help keep the kids cool and entertained on Disney trips.

You can even put ice in the water compartment of some fans so that the water is really cool.

You can actually buy Minnie Mouse or Mickey Mouse handheld misting fan with Florida written on it for the kids.

For a non-Disney version for the adults, get the deluxe misting fan which is big enough to keep ice or the super small but efficient keychain misting fan .

The foldable handheld cooling fan is also a great option.

Hand Sanitizer

Disney World is so big and so crowded that you don’t even want to start thinking about the germs in there.

Add to that, we are in 2021 and the pandemic is still here!

Gift some hand sanitizers for peace of mind plus get an award for thinking of the most hygienic of Disney vacation gifts!

Off course you don’t need Disney but these matching Minnie and Mickey hand sanitizers with holders are so cute and cheap plus attach to backpacks and purses.

disneyland trip gift ideas

Disney Face Masks

Speaking of the pandemic, Disney Parks require face masks for all visitors.

That doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon, especially during the busy holiday season.

Get nice Disney themed face masks to set the mood!

Disney Suitcases

Just imagine how much fun packing for Disney World trip would be in a Mickey Mouse suitcase!

Well, they exist!

American Tourister has some great Disney themed suitcases that would make any Disney lover smile – bit of a Splurge but so worth it!

The luggage bags top my list of cool Disney gift ideas for kids.

disneyland trip gift ideas

Put your family or loved ones in a great mood before the trip by gifting the Disney themed suitcases .

disneyland trip gift ideas

If you are looking for toddler sized Disney luggage , there are amazing options including Mickey Mouse, Finding Dory, Elsa and more.

Disney Luggage Tags and baggage locks

Ever taken ages finding your luggage at baggage carousels?

Do everybody a favor and just give these Disney luggage tags as gifts for people going to Disney World.

Disney Beach Towel and Swimsuits

The Mickey Mouse and Gang Beach towel is perfect for Disney trips and to keep in your backpack or diaper bag.

disneyland trip gift ideas

You can also check other great Disney Beach towel designs.

Disney Games to play during traveling

If you don’t live in Florida or California then traveling to Disney means either a long road-trip or red-eye flights with stopovers.

Travel Games are perfect to keep kids occupied and the parents will thank you for years to come.

Of course, a Disney vacation needs Disney themed games.

We have this dry-erase sketchpad for the kids and they love to draw on it while traveling.

I also like the Disney stickers and activity books and magnetic game sets .

We also enjoy playing the Mickey Eye Found It card game while on road trips.

Disney Princesses Lip Balm 8 pack is a great gift with 8 different flavors and pictures of princesses.

These Disney Band-aids come in 24 different styles and include Frozen, Mickey Mouse, Planes, Princesses,  Finding Dory and more.

disneyland trip gift ideas

Mickey Mouse Crocs

A typical day at Disney World involves lots and lots of walking.

Comfortable, quality walking shoes are absolutely essential to survive Disney without blisters and band-aids.

While I love almost all crocs for walking, the many options in Mickey Mouse crocs make them absolutely perfect for a Disney World trip.

disneyland trip gift ideas

You can gift Mickey Crocs that light-up , Crocs that have Mickey design all over them or crocs with Mickey band , or Crocs with Minnie Mouse design.

They come in toddler, kids as well as adult unisex (men & women) sizes.

Fun Gifts for Kids going to Disney World

Finding the perfect gift for the most excited travelers is fun.

I love taking the time to shop and search for the most unique gift for my family.

All of the items below make perfect Disney World gift ideas.

Walt Disney World Autograph Book and Pens

The Walt Disney World Autograph Book is the perfect gift for young Disney visitors to collect autographs from their favorite characters – one of the best gifts from Disney world.

I was sure S-Boy would love handing it over to Mickey Mouse and his friends to sign, so we bought one – but it got stolen before we reached Disney… it’s a long story!

The autograph book is great for breakfast with the characters and makes an excellent trip souvenir.

Or you can buy the Disney Princess Autograph Book Plus Photo Album for little girls.

This book also has a photo sleeve to hold photographs with characters. You can also gift the Disney characters pen set to make it complete.

disneyland trip gift ideas

Disney World Vacation Gift Sets

Instead of buying individual gifts, why not buy sets that make great gifts by themselves?

This Mickey Mouse WDW travel gift set has an autograph book, mouse headbands, autograph pens, lanyards, and stickers. There’s also a matching Minnie mouse vacation gift set for girls.

There are quite a few such sets: try the Minnie backpack one or Mickey backpack one or the Mickey + Minnie backpacks + lanyard + autograph book one.

Children’s camera

What better time to gift your child his or her first camera?

We bought the V-Tech Toddler Camera for our preschooler and he loves using it.

He has already mastered the buttons and even frame options and loves taking pictures of his baby sister and everything else!

On our California trip, he was taking photos from the moment we reached the airport and especially loved taking pictures of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck – it was the perfect Disneyland gift!

Instant Camera

Instant Camera makes a super fun gift for kids going to Disney World.

The recent versions of instant cameras take bright pictures and have loads of smart features.

I especially love the Fujifilm Instant Camera as Disney gifts for teens or younger kids since it comes in bright colors including blue, green and pink and also has a selfie mirror.

The Polaroid Instant Camera is also a great camera with 4 scene settings.

Kids can take instant photos with characters and get them autographed as keepsakes – it’s easily the best of Disneyland trip gift ideas.

disneyland trip gift ideas

Disney World Pressed Penny Album

Have you ever lost your pressed pennies during a trip?

The pressed pennies and quarters make great little Disney mementos but are really hard to keep track of, especially during an exciting day at Disney Parks.

This Disney themed pressed penny passport book keeps all the pressed pennies safe and is one of the best gifts to give someone going to Disney World.

Disney Trading Pins

Disney trading pins are stamped with the Disney Logo and are trade-able at all Disney World Parks with the Disney Cast Members.

Kids love trading the pins for the ones they want with cast members.

Buying the trading pins in advance saves a lot of money as the pins are very expensive at Disney World.

I really like this set of 25 trading pins that includes hidden Mickey and other unique pins.

Alternatively, a set of 50 trading pins will be enough as gifts for kids going to Disney World as well as big families.

These pins are the perfect gifts to get everyone in Disney mood pre-trip.

Also, did you know that you can actually give Disney characters gifts?

While the characters can’t accept anything big they can accept letters, trinkets, and small things like honey for Winnie the Poo from their little fans.

These trading pins also make the perfect gifts for your favorite Disney characters.

Lanyard with Coin Purse

These Mickey and Friends Lanyards with Coin Purses are great companion gifts to Disney trading pins.

The pins can be attached to the lanyards to easily trade with Disney Cast Members.

A great alternative to the Disney Backpack, they are also excellent additions to Disney themed travel gear and make excellent gifts for an upcoming Disney trip.

The coin purse can be used to store Disney Resort room keys, IDs, park tickets and passes, souvenir pressed pennies, trading pins, chap-stick, etc.

Princess Dresses and Disney Costumes

How adorable are the photos of Disney character princesses with a toddler or pre-teen princesses at the princess meet-ups?

Princess Dresses are the ultimate going to Disney gifts for little girls! If you know a little girl who loves Disney, she will adore a princess dress of her favorite character.

You can choose among Belle or   Elsa or Ariel and more among Disney’s favorite princesses .

You can also buy Disney costumes for boys including pirates, Mickey and friends – these are great gifts for child going to Disney world.

However, remember adults can’t wear costumes inside Disney!

This kid is going to Disney shirts

Buy the ‘this girl is going to Disney’ or ‘this boy is going to Disney’ shirts for your kids for a fun twist.

We saw a few kids wearing the shirts on the tram from Mickey and friends parking lot to the park and they got a lot of smiles.

These shirts also make the perfect gift for child going to Disney world on a surprise trip.

Books on Disney World and Disney Characters

Young readers will devour these books that tell them more about Disney World.

The Junior Encyclopedia of Animated Characters has fun facts, trivia, and quotes from Disney’s 150+ heroes, princesses, and villains – while it’s not for older kids, it is one of the perfect Disney gifts for toddlers.

The Disney Book has excellent information on Disney’s incredible animations, live-action movies, park attractions and more.

Disney A to Z: The Official Encyclopedia has trivia and anecdotes on all things Disney. Disney Who’s Who is a great book with information on all of Disney’s characters including the latest movie characters and more.

All these books make perfect gifts for kids going to Disney.

disneyland trip gift ideas

Fun gifts for Adults going to Disney World

Use these lists to find the best Disney World gifts for adults – these folks are honestly the hardest to buy since so much of Disney stuff is mostly geared towards toddlers and pre-teens – though really does a Disney fan have an upper age limit?!

So many of my friends love Disney plus I’m a huge fan so Disney world gift ideas for adults are always on my mind!!

Disney World Dining Guide Books

Did you know that Walt Disney World has over 300 dining choices?

The Disney Dining Plan has to be utilized properly to maximize its value while advance dining reservations are not that easy to figure out.

Luckily there are detailed dining guides to Disney’s food carts, eateries, restaurants, and dinner show that is bound to make life easier for the adults.

You can purchase separate guidebooks just for WDW dining plans – one of the best Disney trip gift ideas for foodies!

The Walt Disney World Dining Guide has a wealth of information on almost all food stations and the Disney Dining Plan.

It also includes advance dining reservation tips, menu recommendations and more.

Alternatively, you can gift the Dining at Walt Disney World: The Definitive Guide – a book describing ‘must-do’ character meals and other tips and tricks to have great meals among other DisneyWorld gifts.

Another good one is the Disney Dining Plan 2019 . On another note – are you excited about all the new things coming to Disney in 2019 – you can check them all here!

What not to gift someone going to Disney world

Not all gifts are created equal.

While most of these things seem like the perfect Disney travel gifts – they are in fact not allowed inside the Disney parks.

Here’s a list of what not to buy as Disney world trip gift ideas.

Selfie sticks

Selfie sticks are banned inside Disney World which totally makes sense considering the number of people in there.

Though drones usually make the coolest gifts for travelers, they are banned in all Disney World Theme Parks.

Wagons are super useful to carry children as well as snacks and other items but they are banned inside Disney Parks.

Masks or Adult Costumes

Disney World Theme Parks ban masks or adults wearing costumes because they can’t be easily distinguished from the staff.

Timing Your Disney Surprise Ideas

The timing of the Disney surprise is something we want to talk through first before going over all our different surprise Disney trip reveal ideas.

How soon do you want to announce a Disney trip? Do you want your kids to be surprised with the news as you're heading to the airport? Do you want them to have time to be part of the planning process and tell them further in advance?

Essentially you have two main options: surprising them  prior to the trip whether that's weeks/months in advance OR surprising them with ‘look we're at Disney RIGHT NOW!' Let's go through some of the pros and cons of both approaches as you plan for a surprise Disney trip reveal.

1. Disney Surprise Reveal En Route to Disney

For folks that are looking to surprise their kids en route to the Disney destination, you first have to make sure you don't spill the beans too soon by giving away clues. I personally could never do this because I'm not capable of keeping a secret that long! But if you have the willpower, this is surely a way to make this an unforgettable way to announce a Disney trip.

Word of caution: make sure you know that this is the right way for your kiddo to find out. Some kids don't like surprises like this. I had a friend that tried this and her son started crying in the airport! He was so shocked and excited that it just overwhelmed him. Not the fun Disney trip surprise video she was hoping for! There's plenty of ‘Disney Announcement Fails' all over YouTube- it can be a risky way to announce a trip. Part of what makes up those fails is the idea of telling your kids a false destination in its place- sometimes kids might really want to go to grandma's house! You know what's best for your kids and if this is the right way to surprise them with a Disney trip.

If you do decide the spur of the moment Disney surprise is the right choice, still consider the timing of this Disney surprise reveal. You can wait until you arrive at the airport and announce it prior to departure. This may be the easiest if your kids are older because most kids would be asking a million questions about where you are going. If your kids are smaller, it's easier to get away with waiting for the announcement until you literally arrive at Disneyland or Walt Disney World.

So if this is your plan- timing is everything. Consider if you can make it all the way to your flight arrival without the Disney trip surprise being spoiled if this is your plan. Some airports will be covered in Disney ads or souvenir stores which might clue in older kids. If you make it through the airport with the big reveal still a surprise then you have two options: reveal the surprise en route to the hotel/at the hotel or at the Disney Park you are heading to.

If you're visiting Walt Disney World and staying in a Disney owned hotel, many of the hotels offer services that decorate your room with Disney themed toys or decor to start off the vacation in an exciting way. Over at Disneyland, you can also find plenty of local Anaheim services that take care of this for you too.

And of course, if you debut the surprise at the park entrance- you really don't need more than the magic of the Disney Parks entrance to make your kids squeal with excitement.

2. Disney Surprise Ideas in Advance

There are a few benefits to revealing your Disney surprise in advance. For one, the announcement process can be more detailed and creative! You can also then incorporate countdown chains, calendars, or ask your children to get involved with the trip planning which can held build excitement! If you book with our travel partner, Get Away Today , you will receive tons of links to free downloads for printable vacation countdowns, packing lists, and more which can help build that excitement.

You can also consider holidays or birthdays in relation to your trip announcement. Is the trip a birthday or Christmas celebration? As experiences replacing material possessions get more popular this is one Disney surprise idea to tie in your trip and also make that holiday/birthday an unforgettable experience.

Think about how far in advance you want to reveal the news. I have found in my personal experience that if I reveal it too far in advance that the excitement is rather muted. “Oh, we're going to Disneyland?! But not for eight months….?” Time can be a struggle for kids to understand so I recommend revealing the news closer to the departure date so it's close enough to look forward to but not too far to feel irrelevant.

Now that we've talked the timing, let's get into all our best surprise Disney trip reveal ideas! All of these Disney surprise ideas work for Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Hollywood or Universal Orlando, and Disney Cruises. You can adapt any of these Disney surprise ideas for your destination.

Surprise Disney Trip Reveal Ideas

There are a variety of great Disney trip surprise ideas and you can also incorporate your specific destination into the Disney surprise reveal as well. You can tailor these Disney trip surprise ideas for any age but always consider your trip timing into the surprise as well.

1. Suitcase Surprise

Fill a suitcase with that they will need on their trip to Disney. Make sure to include some Disney related t-shirts, Mickey ears or autograph books to help clue them in. This way the excitement is revealed and they have some goodies to enjoy right away too! Bonus points if you get them their own little suitcase- that can make the experience feel more special for kids that are traveling for the first time.

2. Christmas Morning

If you're giving the gift of Disney for Christmas or a birthday then half the fun is in the present opening. You can give gifts that clue them in on where the trip is (Minnie ears? Stuffed Mickey Mouse? Magic Bands?) and then let them guess! Or you can be more direct and put the tickets in a small box (consider using printed out fake ones just so you don't risk damaging your real ones) and have them open it!

3. Wrapping Disney Balloons

This is one of my favorite Disney surprise ideas. Get a big box, wrap it, and fill it with helium balloons. You can get a custom balloon done (check local party stores or go online on Etsy) and have it announce your trip. Or fill it with Disney themed helium balloons. You could put a sign on the balloon that says ‘You're going to Disney!' or write it out on a card to put in the bottom of the box.

4. Scavenger Hunt

Create a scavenger hunt that includes clues about your trip and ends with the big reveal. You can find plenty of scavenger hunt templates on Pinterest or by searching online. For smaller kids, you can also start this into a string scavenger hunt to keep them focused and on track. Consider keeping the scavenger hunt confined to a smaller space if you want to be able to get the best video of it.

5. Letter from Mickey

Imagine the excitement when your kids receive a personalized letter from Mickey inviting them to Walt Disney World or Disneyland. You can find plenty of printable options online for free or on Etsy for an additional cost.  You could include the letter in a large box of Disney goodies or you can mail it to your kids! Our travel partner Get Away Today offers a template for this on their website .

6. Breakfast or Dinner Reveal

For some kids that have been to the parks before, they might have learned to associate certain foods with the Disney Parks. You can find some recipes online to create your own Dole Whips or Mickey waffles at home and surprise the kids with a themed meal.

7. Universal Studios- Hogwarts Letter

If Universal Studios is on your destination list and your kids are big Harry Potter fans then you can't resist sharing the news with Hogwarts acceptance letter along with a ticket to the Hogwarts Express! Our travel partner Get Away Today shared this awesome free printable for both Hollywood and Orlando on their blog.

I used this surprise idea when my son was little for his first trip to Universal Studios Hollywood during our upcoming Disney vacation. He had been asking for awhile because he loves Harry Potter so I printed these out, rolled them up like scrolls, and attached them to a stuffed owl. I told him over dinner and he loved it! He thought for a moment Hogwarts actually sent the letters. A very cool memory to have.

8. Disney Cruise Fish Extender Surprise

If you are looking for a Disney Cruise surprise idea, incorporating the popular fish extenders into your Disney surprise reveal is a great idea. This also builds into the excitement leading up to the trip for kids as they prepare their gifts for trading. Fish extenders are just hanging storage pockets you put outside your stateroom and then you can join online Facebook groups to plan small gift exchanges with others on the ship. The name is derived from the fact that outside every stateroom on a Disney Cruise is a little fish clip that holds communications from the ship, you hang our storage hanger from the fish and then you have a fish extender! For this Disney Cruise surprise idea I would recommend surprising kids with the fish extender and then begin planning your cruise exchanges to build excitement to the cruise.

9. Disney Surprise Box or Gift Bag

This is what I did for my son's first trip to Disneyland. I filled a Disney tote bag full of Mickey ears, stickers, a countdown activity, Disney themed candy, and a Mickey Mouse t shirt. It didn't take him long to figure out why I was gifting him all these Disney themed items that we would need for a Disney trip. But just in case, you may want to also include an obvious “We are going to Disney!” item in the box like a copy of their tickets (or fake ones online!) or even just a printed out paper announcing it.

10. Social Media Announcement

This is a nice Disney surprise idea for teens although it depends on if your teen actually follows you on social media. (My son has a tendency to “accidentally” unfollow me on TikTok) But posting a status update or even getting creative with a video and posting it to your social media announcing your upcoming Disney trip and waiting until your teen sees it can be a fun Disney surprise idea.

Considering the amount of time, money, and planning that goes into a Disney trip it makes sense to dedicate some energy to the big Disney surprise reveal. Coming from experience of a mom that has done a few of these reveals along with a few epic fails, here is a piece of advice for those of you taking first timers to the parks: don't be disappointed if they're not that excited. If they've never been to Disney before, they may not fully know how amazing it is. The excitement will come later, don't worry!

9 Practical Gifts for Families Heading to Disney World or a Disney Cruise

Post last updated February 27, 2024

A Disney vacation – either the theme parks or a cruise – is on many families’ travel bucket list. And if you’ve ever planned one yourself you know how time-consuming can be – and can sometimes end up being very costly.

Thinking about what gifts are good to give a family heading to Disney World, Disneyland or Disney Cruise vacation in the near future?

Here are a few gift ideas that will not only make Disney family vacations more memorable but also reduce some of out of pocket expenses.

Gift Ideas for Disney World and Disney Cruise Fans - 9 Practical and useful gifts for WDW and DCL Guests

1. Disney Princess Dress Pajamas

disneyland trip gift ideas

Our daughter never really liked the princess dresses or costumes you see in stores. They were too itchy she said and the glitter would end up everywhere – on the floor, in the car, and on our furniture.

disneyland trip gift ideas

These PJs dresses are a fraction of what the costume dresses sell for and are less messy (glitter be gone!). If you know of a little princess fan heading on a Disney vacation, I’d highly recommend purchasing one of these dresses over the costumes. Just remember to purchase one size bigger so it can be worn on top of their regular play clothes.

You can also find princess dress pajamas on Disney’s online store .

Parents looking for Toy Story, Star Wars or Marvel PJs for their kids can check out DisneyStore.com’s selection. It’s much easier for little ones to do meet and greets with these on instead of bulky, heavy costumes.

2. Autograph Book & Markers

disneyland trip gift ideas

3. Other Items for Collecting Autographs

disneyland trip gift ideas

They make great souvenirs and are less likely to be ruined after the trip. Because you know, sometimes kids like to rip out pages of their autograph book or draw over the signatures. OK, maybe that’s just my kids 😉

disneyland trip gift ideas

You can purchase them at the theme parks and resort hotel gift shops but they are pricey (for what they are) and sizes are limited – they sell out quickly during heavy rain days.

5. Cooling Towel

disneyland trip gift ideas

You will definitely need it when the temperatures begin to rise and it’s not bulky like the fans they sell at the parks or gift shops.

6. Disney Guide Books

Guide books and other Disney related books can help with planning and get kids excited about their upcoming trip.

7. Touring Pack/Kit

Park days (Disney World and Disneyland) and port days (Disney Cruise Line) can be long. Kids and sometimes adults can get cranky when hungry or thirsty.

Bringing a lightweight cooler bag and refillable water bottles can minimize the meltdowns and also reduce food and drink costs.

disneyland trip gift ideas

8. Reservations for Special Activities and Experiences

If you want to spend a bit more, you can splurge on Disney activities and experiences like Star Wars Guided Tour at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, a Safari experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Resort or Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Grand Circle Tour at Disneyland Park and Royal Court Royal Tea on-board Disney cruise ships.

Make the Most of Disney Cruise PALO Desserts Buffet

You may be able to make reservations and pay directly on the phone or you might have to use a Disney Gift Card to pay for the experience (read more about Disney Gift Cards below).

You can find out more about special events, activities, and tours on the following pages:

Disney World Events & Tours

9. Disney Gift Cards

disneyland trip gift ideas

Disney Gift Cards are great for teaching kids about how to stay on budget and also reduces the amount of cash you need to carry with you. Just make sure you keep the cards in a safe place until you’re ready to make a purchase.

Where you can use Disney Gift Cards:

  • Walt Disney World  Resort®
  • Disneyland  Resort®
  • Disney store  locations within the U.S. (including Puerto Rico) and Canada
  • DisneyStore.com
  • Disney Cruise Line®
  • Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawai’i
  • Disney’s Beach Resorts
  • Adventures by Disney®
  • Disney PhotoPass®
  • Disney World Resort – resort hotels and theme parks (Florida)
  • Disneyland Resort – resort hotels and theme parks (California)
  • Disney Aulani Resort & Spa (Hawaii)
  • Disney stores in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico) and Canada
  • Disney Cruise Line

All Disney Gift Cards are reloadable and do not expire (there’s no service fee for unused balances).

If you’d like to purchase a Disney Gift Card online head to disneystore.com and allow 10-15 business days for delivery (or 24 hours for electronic gift cards).

14 Ideas for Doing a Disney World Trip Reveal Surprise

14 Ideas on how to surprise someone with a Disney World trip reveal

So you’ve booked a trip to Disney World and now it’s time to share the news with your family! Do you want to do a special surprise Disney World trip reveal so that you can capture their reactions?

This is quite common with Disney World trips and they often make for some of the best videos. Who doesn’t love watching someone scream with joy or cry happy tears when they realize their dream trip is about to become a reality?

Here are some of my favourite ideas I have seen when doing a surprise Disney World trip reveal:

Mickey Balloons

This one works best if you are revealing the trip as part of a gift. It involves wrapping up a large box filled with some balloons, and some added magic is if the balloons are Mickey themed. When your family opens up the Disney World surprise box, the balloons will come flying out and you can include a message in the box (or attached to the string of the balloons) that says “You’re Going to Disney World!”

Scavenger Hunt

This one involves a bit more planning and preparation, but the result is super fun. You create a bunch of clues to lead them on a scavenger hunt and hide them throughout your house.

The kids often get so wrapped up in the fun of the game, that they don’t even realize that there may be a big surprise at the end. The treasure at the end is so worth it and will get some great reactions!

Reveal It When You Hit the Gates (Road Trip)

If you are driving to Disney World, then you can certainly pull this surprise off if your children are young. You tell them you are going somewhere else and then hit the road for Florida.

If they are young enough, they won’t pay attention to the road signs and will be unaware of where you are going. Once you are about to enter the Disney World property, now it is time to get them ready for your surprise trip reveal. Tell them to pay attention and look out the window. The Disney World gates are hard to miss and they’ll get pretty excited once they spot them.

Fake Airport Drop-Off

This surprise is for parents that are really good and covert at keeping secrets. You’ll need to keep the trip a secret from them until the last minute and also manage to pack all their stuff without them noticing. You disguise your trip to the airport as a drop-off for one of the parents for a business trip, but then you let them all in on the surprise!

Play a Fun Family Game

disneyland trip gift ideas

Jigsaw Puzzle

Do you have a kid or loved one that loves puzzles? Time to get creative and design a special puzzle made just for them! You can create your own design for your puzzle for free on Canva.com .

Once you have your image created with the message “You’re Going to Disney World!” on it, you can upload it to a puzzle making service. You could use a site such as  www.createjigsawpuzzles.com  or Vistaprint . Then, once you receive it, give it to the one you are surprising and watch them piece it together.

Advent Calendar Surprise

Are advent calendars a big hit in your house during the month of December? Why not make your own and customize the contents? Make a homemade advent calendar and provide the kids with little hints throughout the month leading up to Christmas. You can then have the big reveal inside the day of the 25th which will make for a fun Christmas morning!

Gift Them Their Magic Bands and Disney Goodies

disneyland trip gift ideas

Early Morning Surprise

Give them a reason to jump out of bed! If you have an early morning departure, keep the secret up until the very last minute. Wake them up when it’s time to go with their bags all packed and ready to go.

They’ll wake up feeling like they are in a dream and you will surely have no trouble getting them out of bed once you let them know where you are going!

Mail Them a Letter

Kids love getting mail. What better way to surprise them with a letter from their favourite Mouse! Send them a letter and then have them open it and read it aloud. You can find a Disney World surprise letter template online like this one from mommytravels.net.

Disney Mad Libs

Mad libs are a fun game where you have to fill in the blanks of a story before you read it aloud. Here is an example of a printable you can use to announce your trip. Have your child give you some answers for the blank sections and then give the completed story to them to read.

Organize a Disney Breakfast

Trick Them!

There are so many ways you can trick your kids and surprise them with a Disney vacation, but I really like how this mom orchestrated this one:

Box in a Box in a Box in a Box…..

This one is great if the surprise is a birthday gift. Make them work for it and wrap up several boxes in to each other making them go through several layers until they get to the very end. You could make the reveal their MagicBand or perhaps a letter saying “You’re going to Disney World!”. It makes for a really fun game and the anticipation really builds up as they open each layer.

We have a tradition where we go out for Chinese on Christmas Day. I removed the fortunes in the cookies and replaced them with ones I made stating we were going to disney

I love that idea, that is great way to do a trip reveal! 🙂

We got plush Mickey and Minnie head easter baskets. We put in Disney shirts, their Magic bands, sunblock, a handheld fan/misting bottle, beach towels, goggles and Mickey shaped goldfish crackers. Gave them to our girls and asked them to figure out the surprise.

I love that, such a great idea!!!

Can I ask how you swapped the fortunes?

We have never surprised our kids with a trip to Disney, but we have surprised my best friends daughter(also my daughters best friend) and our kids that my friend and her daughter were going with us on our trip last summer. I made a video at MAgic Kingdom a couple months before her birthday and for her birthday showed the video to her and my kids to reveal that they were coming with us to Disney World. My kids knew about the trip but not that our friends were joining us. I’m planning to surprise them for our spring break trip this coming year. Hoping I can hold out until it time to wake them for the drive to the airport.

If you want to make a trip to Walt Disney World a little more magical, I suggest WDW Florist Service. When I took my sons for the first time, I ordered special gifts for them that were waiting in our room when we arrived with a special message from Mickey! Was it an extra expense? Yes. Was it worth every penny? You bet!
