The 15 Best Tour Operators

These are the companies Travel + Leisure readers trust to provide them with travel expertise and memorable experiences.

outdoor activities tour operator

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite tour operators .

When it comes to an itinerary, Travel + Leisure readers want more than a string of photo opportunities — and the right tour operator makes all the difference in creating a trip of a lifetime versus one that simply checks off a list of sights. This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."

Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.

Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."

No matter which tour they chose, readers were most taken by the people they met along the way, as one said of Trek Travel (No. 13): "By the end of the trip, a group of strangers felt like longtime friends." Find out which other companies round out the list of the best tour operators below.

1. DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.

A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike — it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted. That's part of what helped the tour operator — which runs trips in Europe, the U.S., Latin America, and Africa — skyrocket from No. 14 last year to this year's top spot. Its "top-notch biking equipment" and "challenging but doable itineraries" didn't hurt either. One reader was especially taken by a guide picking figs off of a local tree in Puglia for an extra energy boost during a tough climb, as well as another guide singing to the group after dinner. As another reader put it simply: "They exceed your expectations."

Ranking Methodology

Criteria & scoring.

To rank the adventure travel companies on our list we used 5 main criteria, as follows:

We researched the web traffic statistics as measured by SimilarWeb.com and social media audiences as measured by followers on Facebook and Instagram, and subscribers on Youtube. We created a popularity score for 1. Web Traffic and 2. Social Media presence on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 6. Weighting: 5%

Review Profile

We analysed the public review profiles of each of the travel companies focusing on the major independent 3rd party review platforms like Trustpilot, Tourradar, Stride, Tripadvisor, Feefo and Facebook. We divided our review score into two parts: 1. Size of Review Profile, and 2. Overall Quality of Reviews. Each part was scored on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 6. Weighting: 80%

Responsible Travel Practices

We reviewed each travel operator's website and read their statements about responsible travel / ethics / sustainability. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%

Awards and Accreditations

We explored each travel operator's website to uncover evidence of accreditations like ABTA, ATOL, ATTA and AITO (among others), and official awards / recognitions from the travel industry. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%

Breadth of Offering

We analysed the breadth and scale of each operator's tour offerings, focusing on the number of tours offered, countries covered and number of activities. We then scored each operator on a scale of 1-3. Total available points: 3. Weighting: 5%

We recognise that smaller travel companies would struggle to compete on some of the criteria above.

For example, a small tour operator would most likely have significantly less web traffic and a smaller social presence than a big travel operator. Equally, they would likely have a smaller scale and breadth of offering.

To provide a level playing field, we therefore weighted our overall score heavily towards 3rd party reviews - a criteria that all operators can fairly compete on.

The total review score counts 80% towards the overall score, with the rest of the criteria accounting for 20%.

Table of Adventure Travel Company Data

Below is the raw data we captured for each adventure travel company during our analysis. Please note, metrics like traffic, social media followers and reviews are dynamic and change overtime. The data below is a snapshot of these metrics as of April / May 2019.

We will revise these numbers annually.

Had a great time with Dylan. He was very personable and knowledgeable. Was accommodating to our wants and needs.
This was the best experience I could have asked for! Jonathan was a wonderful guide and made sure we were well looked after and aware of the history / knowledge of the national parks that we visited. He also taught us what settings to put our phone camera at so we could take a photo of the Milky Way! We made friends with all the other people on the tour, as everyone was lovely! My partner and I are British so we asked everyone for food recommendations for the rest of our trip. The food options and packed lunches were delicious and nutritious, and the campsites were cozy and equipped with bathrooms and charging points. I would recommend going to Antelope Canyon as the optional extra, as it was our favourite spot we visited on this trip! I am already looking to plan another trip with Bindlestiff Tours in 2024!

the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.
Fantastic experience - efficient use of time, great itinerary. Well-informed and interesting guide who is also just a great person.

Tour Radar made the booking process easy. Great variety of tours available. I would use this service again.
A great tour! One day in each park was just enough to give us a sense of the grandeur of each of them. People taking the tour with us were great, and our guide was very knowledgeable. We were given options so that those who wanted to do things on their own could do so, while those that remained with the group stayed with the guide and learned about the history, geology, etc. This was the first time I took a vacation with a tour group, and I was very glad that I did because I learned more than I would have if I had explored the parks on my own.

Amadeo

  • Good - 113 reviews for USA tours
Its was a very good trip. Our guide pasquale was awesome and had good knowledge about every place that we visited. He made the trip more entertaining. The only problem was the accommodation in stevenson ranch which was not good as it was a motel and was very old. Also they didnt include california cost line which was mentioned in the trip.
Tour guide a great humanist able to reach out to all, domestic and foreign, to first form individual friendships that then led collectively to group bonding to experience nature's wonders. All members of our group became friends sharing the influence of our guide who understands human nature the way God would have it.

Excellent. Great guide, driver, weather, hotels, food. Great itenirary. Love love this trip.
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Contiki

  • Excellent - 5,319 reviews for USA tours
Citypass was late coming through until I chased it and hotel had an issue with the single supplement so tried to charge me again for a room trying to make me refund with Contiki. Spoiled the start of my trip so had to chase Contiki when I just had arrived. Think I could've done the entire trip cheaper to be honest. Not sure what value Contiki added.
Guides and activities - professionalism at its best.

Judd was excellent, and very knowledgable, he was very prepared and i would recommend Intrepid to my friends and family
Our trip was great! Judd from Intrepid travel made the entire trip so easy and was so patient and quick to adapt to all of our requests. We had no issues the entire week. Accomondations were usually a LaQuinta and every day we had something cool planned to see.

Very disappointing tour. Only 1 day out of 7 actually stuck to the advertised itinerary. Very little time to explore places, bus got lost on more than one occasion, activities were cancelled with no adequate alternative and our highlight hotel was swapped for a very poor alternative, miles from anywhere, which meant extra hours on the coach instead of seeing the area. We complained and have had absolutely no satisfaction. They admit the tour was disappointing but will not even consider any sort of refund or compensation. Don't use this company if you want the advertised holiday. They apparently have the right to change as much as they want without any comeback.
I was hoping we'd stop more so that I could take more pictures of foliage but overall I enjoyed all that we did. Brigette is a great person, with a fantastic personality.

Globus

  • Excellent - 10,869 reviews for USA tours
Excellent driver and director. Would have liked more time in Yellowstone as there was a lot we didn’t get to see eg Grand Prismatic Spring which was disappointing. Good hotels
Randy did a wonderful job. i only wish there was more room between seats as i am 6'4" 175. the scenery was breathtaking.

Good time with lots of riding in the van going to interesting places
We had a wonderful time. The tour was well planned and well managed. The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

The Coyote Trip

The Coyote Trip

  • Excellent - 10 reviews for USA tours
From a speedboat to the Statue of Liberty to fireworks on 4th July in Washington to hiking to Yosemite Falls, this trip showcased the very best the USA has to offer. I went on the 21 day Full Cyote trip from New York to San Francisco with my brother. With such a packed itinerary of included activities, it offered great value for money. The guides in every region we visited were excellent. A particular shout out to Ryan, who added in extra stops and experiences based on the group's interests. Other highlights included the Grand Canyon, Washington's museums, whale watching in Boston, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge and sunset in Griffeths Park. I met a great group of people on the trip, and I wouldn't hesitate to book with the Cyote Trip again.
Great tour. We were a group of 7 and had lots of fun. Tour guides were really nice and friendly and itnwas a great combination of nature and the big cities.

Our guide, Yvonne DeWit, was excellent! Organized, knowledgeable, informative. Interesting variety of stops from rugged Maine to quaint Vermont to historic Boston with much in between. Would highly recommend this tour and look forward to another one.

Infinite Adventures

Infinite Adventures

  • Excellent - 114 reviews for USA tours
It was my first group trip and also my first camping trip. I have to say it was one of the best trips I've been on. It was an adventure! We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights at Remote Camp. Tory and Dave took care of everything and made sure everyone had a great time. No matter what problem you had, they always helped each other! Dave cooked delicious food, we had marshmallows by the fire in the evening and it felt like family. It's a great tour and I can only recommend it to anyone! It certainly wasn't my last tour with Infinite Adventure! Many thanks to Tory, Dave and Natalie (who you could ask any question you wanted to know beforehand) for this unforgettable time! :)
Jump on the bus with Infinite Adventures for a magnificent Alaskan expedition! Dave and Tory are excellent guides and will keep you informed about the areas you visit and give expert advice. I found this to be a truly joyful experience!

Bamba Travel

Bamba Travel

Bamba Travel was the only tour operator which responded and agreed to help me plan my tour in Hawaii. Although I would have liked a more thoroughly organised tour like pick up from the cruise terminal and transport to the Kualoa ranch organised, I had to take the public bus by myself. It was a bit daunting but Bamba gave me some instructions. At Hawaii it quite easy and safe to take public transport during the day. Bamba was helpful at every step. A bit slow with regards to correspondence bec of time differences as they are in the USA but they would respond daily. Thank you Bamba for helping me organise a tailored plan to meet most of my needs. I had a great time in Hawaii.
Great tour!! Our guide, Eduardo, was extraordinary with his knowledge and passion. He was also very entertaining. The 3 day tour was perfect!

The Best Outdoor Adventure Companies for Epic Excursions

Welcome to our list of the Best Outdoor Adventure Companies.

Which companies have mastered the art of running to the hills?

Who can take you out further, and for longer, in conditions that might otherwise have you turning back?

We tossed a few ideas around and established our list of epic tour operators and adventure facilitators, who specialise in taking customers outside their comfort zones and into the (not always smooth) realms of true adventure.

Outdoor Adventure Companies in polar climates

Here is our list of the Best Outdoor Adventure Companies for Epic Excursions :

5. Outdoor Adventure Companies – 57 Hours

Founded by Perica Levatic and Viktor Marohnic, 57hours began life with traditional annual retreats. As kids, both founders spent the majority of their childhood outdoors and got sucked into the usual pastimes of climbing rocks and pedalling down bike trails and generally cutting loose in the woods, like feral maniacs.

Hours spent figuring out how to scale difficult rocks, or navigate a mountain ski slopes, or just simply getting lost, were invaluable lessons in working through obstacles and forming strong identities.

They actively participated in all kinds of outdoor adventures and were stronger, healthier and, best of all, happier for it.

mountains and hiker

Eventually, Perica and Viktor decided to make it their work to introduce more people to wild adventures. Soon, the idea for 57hours was hatched and the company became an outlet for anyone whose lives were dominated by work, or who had lost touch with nature – an open platform connecting everyday people to certified outdoor adventure specialists.

They had figured out a way to make the most of every weekend, which is why they were so-named: 57hours.

Since there is exactly 57 hours between 3:00 pm, Friday, to midnight, on Sunday. In their minds, this would be a way to maximise those hours after leaving work on Friday.

There was enough time in there to head off for a proper adventure outdoors and still make it back in time for the Monday grind – tired, but elated and recharged.

On their adventures, participants spend time outdoors in often uncharted terrain and engage in challenges and problem solving to develop strong relationships and keeps bonds strong among friends and families.

A structure of mentorship is one of the keys to their success and the means to unlocking your full potential. Mentors and guides are on hand to lend advice on everything from ethics to skills, fully certified and trained by the foremost organisations in their locations.

They are also environmental conscious and highly knowledgeable in Leave No Trace methods to inspire a better understanding of sustainable adventure.

4. Outdoor Adventure Companies – Swim Trek

SwimTrek surfaced back in 2000, when founder/lifelong swimmer, Simon Murie, opted to hit the water and celebrate his 30th birthday in style.

As a boy, he had heard stories of the poet Byron and his crossing of the fabled Hellespont – a historic swim from Europe to Asia, in north-west Turkey. The swim itself was preserved in Greek mythology and described Leander, who embarked on nightly swims across the strait, to reach his lover, Hero.

The story told of how Hero would light a torch and guide Leander’s crossing. Byron later visited the strait to retrace Leander’s nightly feats – in fact, he was the first known person to make it across the strait in 1810.

So, Simon went off to Turkey and went through all the requisite council permissions and regulations to find a pilot who would escort him across the strait. He finished the swim in just under an hour and later lamented the imbalance of time, between the logistics and the actual swim itself.

He founded SwimTrek to address this issue and to bring great swims to more people, who would be otherwise put off by the logistical hoops and bureaucratic swamps.

wild swimming in cave with woman

3 years later, Simon dredged-up a unique collection of adventure swims worthy of his endeavour.

He also found time for a solo swim across the English Channel, in 2002.

Then, in July 2003, the company ran their first trip to the Greek Cyclades. Today, they run swims to over 40 locations worldwide, including the Galapagos Islands and Indonesia.

They don’t just swim for the sake of it. Trading repetitive laps in pools, for the endless opportunities of open water. They’ll take swimmers of varying abilities out to the idyllic islands of Croatia’s Kornati National Park, or they’ll safely escort you in the water as you share a few strokes with the rare Mediterranean Monk Seal.

After 17 years in operation, the company has curated an extensive programme, throughout both hemispheres, and helped to strengthen the ongoing popularity of open water swimming.

2. Outdoor Adventure Companies – Shackleton Challenges

Ernest Shackleton stated that it was – “…in our nature to explore, to reach out into the unknown.”

A century ago, during the Heroic Age of Exploration, Shackleton was one of the most courageous figures dedicated to extending the limits of the known world.

He remains one of the most enduring historical figures. In his life, between the years 1908 and 1922, Shackleton led three British expeditions to Antarctica, including the famous Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, from 1914 to 1917.

Many regard that particular expedition as one of the most extraordinary stories of camaraderie and survival ever told. Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance , trapped in pack ice, surrounded by the deadly black depths of the Weddell Sea.

outdoor adventure companies to polar places

The 28-man crew were left stranded on drifting ice, forced to sleep on the ice, among breaching orcas and the punishing cold. For months on end, the crew moved and camped and suffered unimaginable hardships – no lives were lost under Shackleton’s command.

Finally, Shackleton and five others headed out across the sea to South Georgia in a 23 foot rowing boat. It was an 800 mile trip across the freezing Southern Ocean. The party of five returned 137 days later and rescued the rest of the crew, who were housed in upturned boats and almost out of supplies.

Founders Ian and Martin, who met in 2014 due to their mutual attraction to Shackleton and the Heroic Age, set out to create a modern British brand, inspired by their hero.

With a bedrock of true and a yearning to inspire people to live more courageously, they created an expedition-grade outdoor apparel brand and expedition travel company, worthy of The Boss himself.

Their designs carry the nine-pointed star etched onto Shackleton’s gravestone.

Recently, they have introduced Shackleton Challenges – expedition  experiences led by record-breaking leaders, like Louis Rudd MBE, who is a record-breaking polar adventurer and former Royal Marine Commando and SAS soldier.

Lou was the first and only person to traverse Antarctica twice through human power alone.

He has covered more than 3000 polar miles on skis and is a veteran of extreme cold-weather tours, having served in Northern Norway with the special forces and guided many expeditions, including a 1100-mile crossing of Antarctica and 350-mile crossing of Greenland.

Lou is accompanied by Expedition Manager, Wendy Searle, who is the seventh woman in history to complete a solo, unsupported journey from Hercules Inlet to the geographic South Pole.

She also completed a full traverse of Greenland and was the manager for Lou’s record-breaking Spirit of Endurance Expedition, back in 2018.

So, you’re set up with incredible leaders. The challenges themselves are laid out to suit both accomplished explorers and novices.

Each challenge has a special mission, varying in difficulty, from Level 1 to Level 5. You can travel to wild and unforgettable places, from Svalbard to Antarctica. The itineraries are led by the in-house Shackleton team and guaranteed to make your heart beat faster.

1. Lake District Adventuring

Outdoor activities abound in the Lake District. It’s the perfect setting for these mountain navigation courses and adventure holidays. Lake District Adventuring offer a superb range of unique challenges and adventure activities, including  ghyll scrambling and mountain navigation  skills courses. Ghyll scrambling  is seemingly invented for the Cumbrian fells.

Rock climbing is available for beginners, combined with gorge scrambling to make a full day of it. It’s the perfect chance to explore something new, or to consolidate and expand on your existing  adventure  skills.

You’ll be supported by high level instructors – no matter which adventure, from the Lake District to places much further afield, like Nepal.

The fells in the Lake District for outdoor adventure companies.

Many of the challenges are fast paced and physically demanding, with hair-raising climbing portions and varying terrain.

Arguably, the greatest joy of travel is the opportunity to experience new sights, cultures, histories, and landscapes. Visitors will often spend months planning, booking tours, scouting restaurants, and scheduling in some needed downtime.

Not all travel is created equal, however. In fact, many of the most common travel practices today have a number of negative side effects on both the destination and the planet as a whole. So, how can travelers still enjoy the wonders of the world without harming it in the process? One of the best tips for environmentally friendly world travel is to use an eco-friendly tour company.

Many of the best eco friendly tour companies in the world offer all the same advantages as traditional tour groups but have also taken extra steps to ensure they hire locally and watch their product consumption, giving back to the community they draw their profits from. While there are a variety of eco-friendly destinations all around the world , these locations will quickly disappear if travelers and tour companies alike aren’t willing to give back to the places they explore. For the last 20 years, Experience Travel Group has offered tours throughout Asia, emphasizing exactly that principle.

Guides who work for Experience Travel Group don’t earn a commission, keeping the focus purely on an immersive experience. What makes Experience Travel Group one of the best tour companies in Asia, and certainly among the best sustainable travel companies in the world, is its focus on less-traveled areas.

The top Online Travel Agent (OTA) websites for tour operators

Top online travel agency list

distribution   marketing   online travel agents   OTAs   tour guide   tour operator   tourism business strategy

Updated May 2022 – As a tour operator, broadening your revenue streams and increasing your booking levels are one of your main focuses. One of the keys to achieving this goal is by expanding your distribution channels by partnering with different resellers . An effective way to get started is by working with an Online Travel Agent (OTA) to increase your bookings and your revenue. Being on an online travel agency list increases your chances of being discovered by millions of people looking to book their next tours and activity, online.

In today’s article, we’ll go through the importance of OTAs, who the biggest players are in the game based on region, and how you can make the most of working with OTAs.

But first, what are OTAs?

OTAs are booking websites that provide a one-stop-shop for all things related to travel. Whether that be airfare, car rentals, vacation rentals, cruises, hotel bookings and hostels, vacation packages, tours and activities, and more. Travelers seeking a convenient way to book their entire travel itinerary from one booking site would come to an OTA.

Some of the biggest OTA players currently within the travel market include the likes of:

  • Booking.com
  • Expedia group
  • Get Your Guide
  • Tripadvisor

These top online travel agencies attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to their sites daily – making them a great partner to work with to boost your booking levels.

What are the benefits of using an online travel agency?

benefits of using OTAs

As a tour provider, OTAs provide a range of benefits for your business and your customers.

Benefits for travelers:

  • It’s a one-stop-shop where they can browse and make travel bookings with over hundreds of different brands and suppliers within the travel industry
  • It provides travelers with the convenience of being able to compare and place a booking with different companies, all while being able to pay for the entire itinerary at once
  • OTAs provide travelers with a sense of trust in booking from a familiar and reputable name. Travelers that may be venturing to a foreign country may not always want to book directly through an OTA travel website that they’re not familiar with
  • OTAs provide travelers with a user-friendly platform. They’re constantly updating and implementing greater features on their website to boost and simplify the user experience

Benefits for operators:

  • Provides greater reach and exposure for your business, especially within the international market
  • OTAs help to fill the gap to close available seats, especially during lower seasons by easily accepting last-minute bookings
  • Enhances your content for thousands of international travelers by translating your tour descriptions into multiple different languages
  • Most OTAs such as Viator provides an easy and thorough onboarding experience

The best online travel agents on a global scale

Top online travel agency list - Viator

About the company:

Unlike certain OTAs that list a multitude of different travel products, Viator is wholly focused on tours and activities. It sells its products to a global consumer base at Viator.com , 60 additional consumer-facing websites, mobile websites, and apps, and through its global network of affiliates. Viator’s listings are supported by more than 500,000 reviews, photos, and videos posted by travelers. It boasts 9 million visitors per month.

How it works:

Viator will need to approve you first! They will check with the local visitor’s bureau and relevant associations to see that you’re a legitimate business. Then they’ll make sure that your customer service is on par, usually by sending a destination expert to test the products themselves. Another cool thing that Viator does is create a site specifically for tour guides . Here, guides can list tours, licenses, photos, availability, and payment details. The site will allow real customer reviews, SMS booking notifications, and an online booking function.

2. Get Your Guide

Top online travel agency list - Get Your Guide

Site visitors start by selecting a destination they’d like to go to or a specific attraction they’re interested in participating in. GetYourGuide will then showcase a selection of travel products from various travel companies within the search criteria. Whether it’s transportation that’s required to get around town, fun activities such as paddle boarding or kayak, or something more interactive like taking a cooking class. All these travel services will be listed so travelers can compare and create the best itinerary that suits their needs.

Top OTAs by region

With the various online OTA travel agency list to choose from, it’s important to consider its popularity per region to have a successful partnership.

AMER – Expedia

Top online travel agency list - Expedia

Expedia.com is the largest travel company in the world and is extremely popular within the American region. It was named Top Travel Company on Travel Weekly’s 2013 Power List. With a global presence in over 70 countries, Expedia receives over 50 million unique visitors each month, and its mobile apps are downloaded nearly 80 million times at a rate of over 200 downloads per minute.

Site visitors start by selecting from the option of stays for accommodation, flights for airfare, cars for car rentals, things to do for tours and activities, and packages for a combination of two or more of the options listed. Expedia will then offer a selection of suggestions based on the options listed above.

APAC – RedBalloon

Top online travel agency list - Redballoon

Redballoon is an extremely popular OTA within the Asia-Pacific region. They’re an Australian-owned company that has been operating since 2001 and have had over 4 million tours and activities booked on its site. Unlike Expedia, which caters to a variety of travel products, RedBalloon only sells experiences such as outdoor activities, wine and food tours, water sports, and spa and wellness – to name a few.

When you visit their website, they’ve cleverly curated their product offerings into different types of categories. These categories include Experiences – which outlines the different categories of the tours and activities they offer, location, seasonal events such as Mother’s Day experiences, gift ideas, business travel ideas, bucket list experiences, and newly listed products.

From these options, customers have the chance to browse through the categories that best suit their needs. For example, someone looking for a gift for their partner can browse through the list of gift ideas for men, gift ideas for women, or even gifts for couples.

EMEA – Headout

Top online travel agency list - Headout

Headout is the go-to OTA within Europe, the Middle East, and the African region. Just like Redballoon which solely focuses on selling experiences within APAC, Headout offers experiences in over 60 cities and 40 countries, most of which are within the EMEA region.

As of February 2022, they claim that the company has grown by 800% within the past year and has had over 10 million bookings made on their site. They’ve recently raised $30M in their recent series B funding in early 2022 after only months of raising $12M in the series A funding back in September 2021.

Headout’s main goal is to make traveling more fun & spontaneous. They don’t list the travel company, nor does it reveal the brand of the tour operator. Instead, they only let the customer know what type of tour or activity they’re purchasing.

Travelers looking to book through Headout start their journey by selecting their travel destination. A variety of experiences will then be showcased based on the type of tour or activity and its pricing. For example cruises, museum tours, sightseeing tours, entertainment, food and drink tours, popular things to do in the city, etc.

Operators in Europe that sell their tours on Headout say that the company is growing fast, selling hard, and pushing for better rates for operators.

Integrate your booking system with your Agent listings

Working with OTAs provides tour operators with a wide range of benefits. From expanding their business reach to millions on a global scale, boosting their booking levels and revenue streams , and broadening their distribution channels. However, the more bookings that come through to your business from an OTA, the bigger the admin duties.

Without an online booking software , operators will need to manually input the booking details received from OTAs into their system. This opens up gaps that lead to errors such as mistakes when updating and inputting details into the system, missing payments, and over/double-booking. This can be extremely detrimental to business operations, especially during busy periods.

An online booking software like Rezdy easily integrates with all of the OTAs listed in this article and provides operators with a seamless booking process. Rezdy will help you showcase your real-time availability on the OTA’s site, easily process bookings and payments, and automatically update the system and manifests.

Furthermore, Rezdy offers the most progressive channel manager distribution channel within the experiences industry – Rezdy Channel Manager . Listing your products on Rezdy Channel Manager connects you to over 25,000 resellers including the biggest OTAs that are ready to promote and sell your products.

Using Rezdy Channel Manager is as easy as:

  • Naming your price

Tour Operators

Tour operator is an organization, firm, or company who buys individual travel components, separately from their suppliers and combines them into a package tour, which is sold with their own price tag to the public directly or through middlemen, is called a Tour Operator .

More precise tour operators are primarily responsible for delivering and performing the services specified in a given package tour. They can provide these services themselves as some have their own cars and coaches, hotels, and other travel-related services or can obtain these from the other suppliers. That is why they are called manufacturers of tourism products .

Tour operators are sometimes called wholesalers but this is partially true because a wholesaler buys goods and services in bulk at his own account to prepare a tour package and then retails it through the travel agencies or directly to clients. However, a tour operator who has his own one or more tourists products components, (SOTC, TCI, Thomas Cook, Indo Asia KUONI formulates a new tourist product for example ‘ inclusive tours .’

Tour operators generally offer a variety of package tours to cater to the needs of different kinds of travelers.

Definitions of Tour Operator

Poyther (1993) defines, “tour operator is  one who has the responsibility of putting the tour ingredients together, marketing it, making reservations and handling actual operation.”

Holloway (1992) stated that tour operations undertake a distinct function in the tourism industry, they purchase separate elements of tourism products/services and combine them into a package tour which they sell directly or indirectly to the tourists.

Today, tour operators have become highly competitive. They endeavor to achieve a high volume of turnover, and maximum International and domestic market share by effectively operating. Moreover, the success of many developed and developing nations as tourists destinations depend heavily on a tour operator’s ability to attract tourists, development and promotion of tourism plant, diversification of tourism product and their social responsibilities to develop a remote and backward area.

Types of Tour Operators

Tour operators are basically categorized into four types . These are categories on the basis of their nature of the business and its operations.

Inbound Tour Operators

Outbound tour operators, domestic tour operators.

  • Ground Operators

These are also known as incoming tour operators . Technically, the operators who receive guests, clients/tourists, and handle arrangements in the host country are c alled inbound tour operators . For example, a group of American Tourists is coming through TCI Ltd. to India and the company makes arrangements and handles the group in India then TCI is called an inbound tour operator.

Incidentally, the inbound traffic to the country for the last two decades has been decreasing. Essentially the tour operators need to adopt innovative marketing strategies and should introduce a special interest tour to cater the special needs of Japanese, Americans, French and British people.

Tour operator who promote tours for foreign destinations, maybe business tour or leisure tour is called outbound tour operators . For example a group of American tourists going to a trip of India and Thomas Cook handle arrangement in America like as ticket reservation, hotel booking etc. then Thomas Cook is called Outbound Tour operators in the context of America.

Domestic tour operators are those who assemble, combine tourist components into inclusive tours and sell it to the domestic travelers. In general, these tour operators provide travel services within the tourist’s native country.

The domestic tour operators operate within the boundary of the home country and offer package tour to the travelers viz. Domestic inclusive tours or independent tours.

Ground Operators/Destination Management Companies

These are commonly known as handling agencies and their main function is to organize tour arrangements for incoming tourists on the behalf of overseas operators. Let us take the case of India as a destination that – has a varied culture.

When a tour operator himself promotes beach holidays, wildlife holidays, adventure tours, heritage tours at the different places, the difficulty arises. It is the ground operator then who by handling the incoming travelers in the same season but at different places ensures that the entire operation is according to the package tours or agreements.

Sometime when a handling agency is at a prominent tourist place i.e., Delhi and it has to make arrangements to Goa, then it contracts (If it has no office of its own) with a local operator (known as excursion agent) to handle the arrangement on his behalf.

Why Ground Operators?

Obviously, the tour operation companies do not have close contact with suppliers, governments, destinations and so on. It leaves no choice with the companies but to appoint handling agencies at the destinations.  The main reasons are:

  • Introduction of new products or plant to promote an exotic destination.
  • Lack of Government regulations.
  • Lack of personal contract.
  • Language problem.
  • The company cannot establish its own branch.

Recognizing the very fact that the reputation, performance, and profitability of tour company in its own market largely depends on the efficiency and effectiveness of ground operators, it has because necessary for the company to consider various factors before the selection of a handling agency, they are:

  • Size of business
  • Professional staff
  • Length of business
  • Area of operation/Product line
  • Market share

Functions of Ground Tour Operators

Over the years of functions and activities of the destination, companies have changed drastically to cope with the changing environment of the tourism industry. In fact, today’s destination companies have become more professional and are bound to provide personalized travel services to the tourists. The following functions are performed by ground tours operators:

  • Land arrangement
  • Contract and Negotiate with other vendors
  • Handling of Arrival and departure procedure
  • Planning and organizing local package tour
  • Escorting the tourists
  • Providing market information
  • Costing and pricing package tour

Practically, if we see the working of the travel agencies and tour operators in the industry we find that most of the organizations are performing different types of activities like the retail travel agency , wholesale travel agency, and tour operators.

The travel agency business is no longer an amateurism. Over the last two decades, the pattern and structure of travel agencies have changed to meet tough challenges in the international market. Today, small-scale agencies are finding the travel industry increasingly complex.

Thus, the small and medium scale travel agencies are disappearing or merging or falling instead of rising. On the other hand, a new concept has also emerged i.e. tour operation business . The tour operation business is new but a maturing business at the global level.

  • A travel agent is a person who has full knowledge of tourist product – destinations, modes of travel, climate, accommodation, and other areas of the service sector. He acts on the behalf of the product providers/principals and in return get a commission.
  • Tour operator is an organization, firm, or company that buys individual travel components, separately from their suppliers and combines them into a package tour, which is sold with their own price tag to the public directly or through middlemen.
  • Tour operators are like wholesalers and travel agents are the retailers.
  • A tour operator makes the package holidays up and the travel agents sell them on.
  • Tour operator taking up the bulk of the responsibilities and his fee is obviously much greater than a travel agent.
  • A tour operator has the responsibility to look after the finer details of a vacation or tour such as hotel, accommodation, meals, conveyance, etc.

The wholesale travel agencies may offer or operate the package tours or may specialize in developing tours for inbound as well as outbound travelers. They are often referred to as tour operators, but there is a difference between Wholesale Travel Agencies and Tour operators .

10 Ways to Be More Productive and Increase Sales as a Tour Operator

Table of Content

1. manage your time wisely, 2. focus on the benefits of your product/service, 3. use social media, 4. use an online booking software, 5. add a complementary offer, 6. collaborate, 7. combine different travel products, 8. innovate but don’t sacrifice productivity, 9. plan for productivity, 10. write everything down.

Many of us find it challenging to strike the perfect balance between productivity and the sales process. Being productive is an important issue for tour operators. For example, during the high season, it can be difficult to find time to get everything done. And in the low season, you may procrastinate due to a lack of urgency. If you’re not happy with your productivity, don’t worry – join the club of hundreds of other tour operators who feel the same way. Your workdays are not typically designed to be highly productive as many standard work practices make it hard for you to get things done, instead of making it easier.

However, you’re in luck. We’ve put together a list of 10 Tips for Productivity (that are quick to implement) to help you to be more productive and increase sales for your business.

Let’s get to it.

The first step to being productive is managing your time wisely. It is a vital step for all businesses, from start-ups to tour operators. There are so many moving pieces to your business that if you do not manage your time well, by focusing on what is important and what is not urgent, you could easily lose your grip on the company.

You may be tempted to give attention to things that are pressing, but not necessarily important. That is normal. But that is also how important things get compromised. So start every week by managing your time well and create a list of important things that need to get done that week and the not-so-important things that could get done later, and focus accordingly.

You should always focus on being unique and listen to your customers. Your customers are the reason why you exist so you should always look out for them in order to improve. One of the ways you can do that is to ask them to write a review of your product or service. They will feel happy that you care about their opinion and in exchange, you will get valuable information on new business ideas and plans.

One way to collect reviews is through TripAdvisor. Make sure to read our guide about TripAdvisor’s Review Express in order to automate your review process.

This tip is particularly essential since you’re in the service industry.

It is essential for you to use social media on a daily basis as part of your sales process . It is the place where you can reach people of all age groups. It is also where groups of people (from all backgrounds) congregate to talk about travel products and services. Furthermore, they share their experiences and preferences on various platforms.

You can encourage those people to follow you and talk about you by creating relevant and engaging content. You can create a variety of posts (pictures, videos, questions, and statuses) to get them to use or recommend your products and services. Listen to their comments and feedback to help your business to become better.

In case you received negative customer reviews, here are ways to handle them properly.

Selling your offers online is the best, most productive, convenient, and effective way to manage your tour operations business. You can simply and easily give your visitors the option of booking your products online via your webpage.

The additional advantage of doing this s that you can receive reservations 24/7. Your customers will also have a way to easily and safely book and pay for your products and services. It is a necessary part of having a good customer care policy.

New call-to-action

If you are having trouble increasing your revenue per customer, adding a complementary offer to the service or the experience is the simplest and easiest way to go. For example, if you sell tours, you can offer dinner or lunch options to go with the tours. You could also offer additional equipment for activity tours such as actions cameras or helmets.

In order to do this effectively, you need to know exactly what your customers want. For example, if you offer night time romantic horse carriage tours around the city, perhaps you could offer some wine and tapas before the tour to make the experience more romantic.

Before you get started, make sure that your software enables you to add and manage complementary and special offers.

Regiondo helps you to create complementary offers – make sure to check out our Merchandising Feature!

As a tour operator in the EU, you are likely trying to cater to a large and growing market. That being said, you may also be constrained by a lack of resources. It is thus essential that you micromanage your finances and maximize collaboration opportunities to become more profitable, quicker.

You can use complementary sales partnerships or shared services to lessen the strain on your business. Let’s say that you’re offering a city tour . You can collaborate with restaurants or businesses to provide value-added services so you don’t have to pay out of pocket for them.

Why? Because you should always try to create unique experiences. Combining different travel products to create a unique package will pay off nicely and save you time and effort in attracting customers – because customers naturally gravitate towards unique products and services.

For example, you can create a package that offers a better price by selling flights, accommodation, and activities together, in a single package. This can help both you and your customers. We summarized the experience tourism trend and its effects on the leisure industry in this blog post.

Innovation and productivity are mutually beneficial relationships. You may be caught up trying to innovate so fast that you overlook important management aspects like profits, productivity, and systems processes.

You simply cannot make the excuse that you are not productive because you’re too busy trying to be innovative. Higher productivity usually means better use of limited resources. So innovation and productivity should go hand in hand in your business. In order to become more productive, you could use tools like Google Analytics. In case you are not experienced with this, we created a short manual for beginners.

We already covered the importance of managing your time. However, planning for productivity is different.

If you have 8-10 work hours a day, you should plan your work in a way that will allow you to complete your work in 60 percent of that time. 20 percent of your time should go towards allocating and delegating repeatable work. The other 40 percent should go towards untimely problems that arise daily.

Furthermore, completing 100 percent of your planned work in 60 percent of your time also sets a good example to your co-workers on the importance of efficient planning.

Do you ever have days when you feel like you’re both really busy and not getting anything done? It’s quite common – we can all raise our hands to that. The reason for that is likely because you are stuck on tasks that you can’t address at the moment.

Perhaps you need to talk to someone who is not currently available? Maybe you need to do more research? Instead of thinking about the task, that seems to be beyond your control at the given moment, just write it down.

If you write down the things you’re stuck on or worries that are distracting you, they won’t have to spend entire days or weeks running around in your head.
