Where is the battery located in my 2013 Dodge Journey?

Where is the battery located in my 2013 Dodge Journey ?

Even though the Journey was not a particularly popular model in Australia, I’m still a bit surprised that we don’t get this question a bit more often. Because the answer is a real doozie. While a lot of car-makers find that underbonnet space is too limited to place a battery, some resort to locating the battery either under a seat inside the car or in the boot. But not Dodge in the case of the Journey.

To access the battery in that case, you need to jack up the car, remove the front passenger’s wheel, peel back the plastic inner-guard and there, behind the corner of the front bumper, you will find the battery. For jump starting a car with a flat battery, Dodge placed a positive and negative terminal in the engine bay near the front-left suspension tower, and you’ll identify the positive by a small, red plastic cap with a `+’ moulded into it.

The battery in the Dodge Journey is located in an unusual location for most car batteries: it is mounted on a bumper shelf under the left side headlight. The wheel arch liner can’t protect it from dirt flying off the wheel, creating a corrosive environment. Therefore, when replacing the battery, you almost always have to replace the terminals as well.

2013 dodge journey where is the battery

Usually, the battery replacement on the Dodge Journey is done by removing the left front wheel and part of the fender. Manipulation to remove the battery, fix it, and put the terminals through a niche in the fender is not the most convenient and “clean”.

2013 dodge journey where is the battery

Important: “Asiatic” with 200mm high body + 20mm terminals, without removing the bumper is very problematic to install and secure.

The size of the basket allows you to install a battery up to 25 cm long, and 19 cm high.

Given the inability to easily replace the battery with a new one yourself, or dismantle it to charge it with a stationary charger at home, we recommend buying only a premium battery for your Dodge Journey: a powerful and reliable one. You should also not wait for the “natural death” of the battery, but rather change it routinely every three years, with the replacement to be carried out at the service

Dodge Journey battery selection rules:

  • Only a battery with a left-hand “plus” (straight polarity) will fit;
  • the battery does not need to have a bottom rim, because the battery in the Dodge Journey is secured at the top with a clamping plate;
  • for all gasoline engines can be used battery capacity 60-64 Ah, size 245h175h190 mm or 245h175h175 mm

Important: When the battery is replaced, nothing more than a routine reset of the stored values in the control unit occurs in any Dodge Journey model or configuration. De-energizing the system during battery replacement resets the daily mileage and injection system RAM tables.

The Dodge Journey uses the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), which is a smart battery sensor (located on the minus terminal).

In addition, the car uses starters that don’t require high cranking currents from the battery. Improved ECU programs for cold and hot starts of the engine: switching on start from 40-100 engine rpm, mixture enrichment control by rpm and temperature, RPM position, ignition angle dependent on rpm, reduced fuel injection time, multi-spark plug mode at low engine rpm.

Always install a quality branded battery in the car, selected according to the characteristics required by the manufacturer, not according to the advertising slogans of battery sellers.

In this video we will show you where the battery is located on Dodge Journey

Why is the Dodge Journey Battery Located in The Fender-Well?

Car batteries are usually located in the fender wheel to keep it away from the heat of the engine.

Heat can shorten the life of a battery, and with it located in the fender well helps to block off some heat the engine produces.

It does make the battery harder to replace compared to a standard battery mounted in the engine bay but may have the advantage of longer battery life.

Summary The battery placement in a Dodge Journey is located in the fender-well, which may confuse those looking in the engine bay.

Some owners may wonder where the battery is located since it is not immediately clear where it is.

Replacing the battery in the Dodge Journey is straightforward but not as easy as the battery located in the engine bay.

The front tire will need to be removed, and the wheel-well splash guard will also be removed.

Once the splash guard is removed, the battery can be unbolted and replaced as any other unit would be replaced.

I did the whole job without removing the front tire. The battery was from WalMart, at $59 plus core & tax, delivered free even on a Sunday. I jacked the front end of the truck up just a little using the scissor jack found in the trunk. Of course, a special clip remover was needed, but the 10mm and 13mm wrenches did fine, plus an adjustable. Don’t listen to these YouTube guys that rip the whole front end of the car off just to do the battery!

where are the terminals to jump the car where do i get the connection to get power from another car

It’s hard to remove the bolts or nuts off the terminals, and hard to understand which ones they are. Is it always necessary to disconnect the negative ground first, and if so from where? Are any special tools required besides the clip removers?

Battery Dead problems of the 2013 Dodge Journey

Three problems related to battery dead have been reported for the 2013 Dodge Journey. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2013 Dodge Journey based on all problems reported for the 2013 Journey.

1 Battery Dead problem

Battery goes dead frequently when vehicle is left alone from 12 to 48 hours. Replaced battery with a new top of a line sears best. . Problem still exists. Very dangerous when vehicle will not start at the end of a work day stranded in a parking spot in a bad side of town. Electric door locks will not open doors due to dead battery. Constant unknown battery drain!!! happens frequently. This vehicle is a lemon!!.

2 Battery Dead problem

I was at the drive in movie and had the truck running for part of the movie. I shut the truck off and just listened to the rest of the movie via my radio and had the lights off. When the movie was over I I could not crank my truck. You could see the lights on in the inside but my truck dash said my key was not in vehicle of which it was. Then it said vehicle not in park of which it was. My uconnect screen kept trying to load and would just keep going out. I had 3 people try to jump it just in case the battery was dead even though I knew it wasn't including the tow service for my insurance. None of this worked. I had to get the vehicle towed home now I can not lock my vehicle cause it has no power. My dash says my key is not in the vehicle of which it was and that the vehicle is not in park of which it was. Now on my dash it says the following lights are etl electronic throttle light, air bag warning light, and mil malfunction indicator light. I saw a lot of complaints about this on google and youtube when I search this issue this has got to be fixed caused I am a doge fan but I can not keep a vehicle that I am paying on and it doesn't work. Help.

3 Battery Dead problem

I purchased this car in 2012 and since then, I have replaced the battery at least once a year and Dodge keeps telling me that there is nothing wrong with the car. To me, this is a design flaw as I cannot get to the battery to check water or status. I was driving down the road the other day when all the idiot lights started flashing, so I pulled over and turned off the car. I tried to restart it and the battery was dead!! e TN Dodge had just replaced the battery, under warranty, as I had just replaced the battery two months earlier, and now it was dead, once again, 1 year later, almost to the day. And now it's back at e TN Dodge, replacing the battery once again. And yet, Dodge keeps telling me that there is nothing wrong with the car, that replacing the battery, once a year, is normal in this area. I spoke with george stephens at the Dodge dealer and he was the one who said that. I have called Chrysler and they keep telling me to "bring it to the nearest dealer", Chrysler has told me this four times for a total of about 5 weeks downtime, both at the dealer and on the road/home total. I truly cannot get anyone at Chrysler to listen to me and they are not taking this seriously. At the same time, since owning the car, my remote will not start the car if it's cold. I have to physically go outside, open the car door, sit in the seat and start it as if I was going to use it right than and there. I have the paperwork where I have taken it to rocky williams Dodge, in mt. Juliet, TN to get it fixed and they said "nothing wrong". . . . ,to me, this is a serious design flaw and safety issue as if I or my wife are on the interstate and the battery dies, I am stuck. And it has happened before. . .

No power, full battery

Battery is fully charged and measures 12.56V across the battery posts. Measuring across the exposed terminals (the battery is down in the fender and not up top where most vehicles have them, and in lieu of that there is a positive terminal placed up top) shows only 2 - 3V. The vehicle appears to be completely dead. Absolutely no lights/sounds. Cannot even attempt to start it. If boosted the car starts right up and runs, as long as the cables remain connected. Once removed the car sputters and dies out unless the gas pedal is depressed. The car will run at a higher ram but it still flickers and a relay can be heard clicking back and forth. Where do I begin to troubleshoot?

So you got at the battery to test at it's posts....

Loss of voltage by the time it takes to get to the engine bay jumper posts would indicate resistance(dirty/corrosion) of cable connections or cables themselves as they are not the "heaviest" gage wires of cars of older times. Get back in there and clean the posts and cable clamps. Use a light coating of dielectric grease on reassembly.

All clean. I disconnected the cables to the jumper post and cleaned it before measuring. The battery cable at the jumper post is still 12V+ when disconnected, but when connected to the jumper post and everything else only measures 3V ish.

check the NEGATIVE jumper on the strut tower, it's multiple wires  and common for resistance from "tarnishing to develope there.

Even grinding off paint around the grounds to bare metal, then a light coat of dielectric grease can help.

Salt belt cars have more issues with this. On copper connection, clean means shiny bare metal.

Scratch the point of meter probes on surface of remote contacts under hood. If functioning right there is a small loss from top battery post, approx 0.3 volts, not 9.

Load test battery in car as well. Need at least 300 cranking amps to properly start, 12.5 volts only useful with amperage as well.

(  If boosted the car starts right up and runs, as long as the cables remain connected. Once removed the car sputters and dies out unless the gas pedal is depressed. The car will run at a higher ram but it still flickers and a relay can be heard clicking back and forth)................Sounds like the ALTERNATOR is BAD as it wont keep car supplied with juice once going and car will run if jumped, so sounds like the BATTERY is BAD.........doesn't matter what the battery reads if it is not enough power to crank the starter.

I just started having this exact same problem on a 2017 Journey.  I have put 2 brand new duralast batteries (I had them checked at the store before I left) AND a new alternator in the vehicle.  Cable coming up from the battery disconnected from fuse block reads 12.4V.. as soon as I connect to the fuse block, voltage reading drops to 3V.

Any help would be appreciated.  I am at wits end trying to figure this problem out.

I think there is an IBS sensor on the cable that can go bad also its down on the battery end of the clamps

Battery current sensor. I don’t work for these guys, best jpeg’s that copy easily.  Could  bypass  and confirm it’s issue.
