Only 1 Full-Size Pickup Truck Includes Adaptive Cruise Control On Every Trim

Many modern technologies improve car safety and convenience. For example, adaptive cruise control detects vehicles in front of you and slows your truck to keep pace with surrounding traffic. Adaptive cruise control is available on most new trucks, as an upsell. But this handy technology comes standard on every trim of the 2022 Toyota Tundra.

Which pickup truck has adaptive cruise control?

Almost every new pickup truck is available with adaptive cruise control. That said, most automakers charge extra for this feature. The 2022 Toyota Tundra is the only full-size pickup truck that includes adaptive cruise control on every trim.

Even Ford’s entry-level F-150 XL is loaded with technology. It includes an 8-inch capacitive touch LED screen with Ford’s SYNC infotainment system. It also has selectable drive modes, an electronic shift-on-the-fly transfer case, and wiper-activated headlights. Every F-150 trim has Co-Pilot 360 Technology with automatic braking . But the base trim F-150 does not have standard cruise control, let alone adaptive cruise control.

The Ram 1500 is the only full-size 2022 truck that does not come with automatic emergency braking. This is because the lower trim levels of the Ram 1500 do not come with sensors to detect obstacles. Without these sensors, the Ram 1500 also does not have adaptive cruise control. To get auto braking and adaptive cruise control you need to upgrade your 2022 Ram 1500 with the Safety Group option.

Every 2022 General Motors light-duty pickup truck offers “Chevy Safety Assist.” This means that all 2022 GMC Sierra 1500s and Chevrolet Silverado 1500s come with forward collision alert, lane keep assist, and even emergency braking. Just like the F-150, these trucks have all the hardware necessary for adaptive cruise control. But this feature is still an option that costs extra on most trim levels.

What does Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.5 include?

Toyota’s new Safety Sense 2.5 is a suite of driver aids that come standard on most of the automaker’s products. It offers more features than some competitors’ packages, including adaptive cruise control.

Toyota launched the Tundra’s third generation for the 2022 model year. The advanced truck leads its segment with available technology such as a 14-inch touchscreen and trail cameras.

Every 2022 Toyota Tundra trim, from the entry-level SR to the top-of-the-line Capstone features Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 . This package of driver aids includes a full pre-collision braking system capable of detecting pedestrians, lane departure alerts and lane keep assist , automatic high beams, and even adaptive cruise control.

Toyota labels adaptive cruise control as Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC). This driver aid uses the truck’s radar system to detect nearby traffic and slow down the truck without driver input. It also can read road signs. This way, you can set a target cruising speed and your truck will drive at the speed whenever possible, but also slow down when necessary.

Which pickup trucks do not have adaptive cruise control?

You can order adaptive cruise control on the regular 2022 Ram 1500. But if you buy the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic, you cannot get adaptive cruise control. Many heavy-duty trucks also do not offer the feature.

Ram introduced the fifth-generation of its full-size, light-duty pickup truck for the 2019 model year. The 2019-present Ram 1500 is only available with the four-door quad cab and even larger crew cab. But Ram continues to offer its fourth-generation truck, with a two or four door cab, as a bare bones work truck. It is badged as the Ram 1500 Classic.

The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic has all the safety technology required by law, such as a backup camera and thus an infotainment screen. But it is not available with any proximity sensors. Therefore, you cannot order a Ram 1500 Classic with pre-collision alerts, auto braking, or adaptive cruise control.

Every full-size truck manufacturer has pledged to include auto braking by September 2022. If they keep their promise, every new pickup will have some form of proximity sensors by the 2023 model year. This does not mean they will all include adaptive cruise control standard, but they will all have the hardware to include it.

This pledge does not apply to heavy-duty trucks; while some already offer adaptive cruise control, it may be a long way off for other brands.

I don't know if someone has been completely successful as I was interested and quickly lost interest when I saw the parts needed, the time involved, and the price tag. I don't follow those threads any more but you can search this forum, ramforum.com, and 5thgenrams.com. The last forum listed is very active with 5th gen owners and probably has the most info. My dad has both on his Limited and, while I like the ACC (when I want), I am not a fan of the lane assist - way to sensitive for my taste. Cost and time wasn't worth the benefit to me. YMMV

I realize this is an old subject, but I"m new to it. I bought a 2022 Limited, that had Cruise but not adaptive. By reading the forum, I learned that I already had the correct hardware in the truck (all generation 5 Ram 1500's do) In order to add ACC, it needed to change the HCU from the origional to the new model, HCU: 68415320AA ACC w/Stop and Go , and ABS Module: 68436462AJ Adaptive Cruise Control w/Stop and Go], Then I had the cruise control button on the steering wheel changed to ACC Button - 68309592AD SWITCH. Speed Control. So I bought those, as well as purchasing OBD link MX+, plus a security module bypass link..(kaodtech), and finally a software app for my PC - alphaOBD.There is very descriptive information on this forum. So I bought it all, had the switch installed, and then decided to trade my truck for a new 2024. The result, I have all the parts.. due to inflating, I think I spend around $1,200. If anyone on this forum wants to add ACC, let me know, I'd be happy to sell all for half price, since I no longer have a need for it. Chuck Yeager

Adaptive Cruise Control

Owner's impressions? Not regular cruise control but specifically adaptive cruise control. How does it process sudden changes? (1) If someone far away, starts to slow down, would it start slowing down slowly allowing the distance to shrink, or slams on brakes, and then revs up to keep that distance to an inch accuracy? (2) If someone driving faster, cuts in and continues to accelerate, would it continue same speed allowing the car in front to get away, or again, slams on brakes? (3) If whoever in front starts accelerate fast, would it accelerate slowly catching up, or slams on gas? (These scenarios are my real [painful] experiences with adaptive cruise control on various cars) (4) And finally, any one can comment on the following video? It appears, 2022/23 Promaster's Adative Cruise control [pitifully] attempts to scan for speed limit signs and adjusts speed accordingly  

In my experience in other cars with adaptive cc, you can set the the distance your car follows the car in front of you: close, medium, far. Your car stops and accelerates at a normal pace to maintain that distance. If someone blows by you and cuts in front, it senses that they're going faster. It may tap the brakes, but it doesn't slam them on. I never thought I would want acc, but I've loved it on other cars and will get it with my next car.  

A friend of mine has it in his Lexus and it works as designed. His biggest complaint is about adaptive cruise in general - he's frustrated by the number of times he thought he'd been cruising along making good time, only to find he'd been following a slowpoke without realizing it for an indeterminate amount of time.  

A sleep at the wheel is his problem.  

The ACC and FCW on our 2022 is dangerous when it even works. It has worked as it should a few times when the sun was at our back on an overcast day but in general it is unnerving and on several occasions would have caused a collision if the driver did not intervene. It will lose “sight” of the vehicle it is following and accelerate when moving 20-30 mph. The following distance is all over the place and it does not respond to adjustments. Sometimes at highway speeds in the right conditions it works okay, but it’s rare. For now we just don’t use it and are waiting on Ram to come up with a fix. I think it’s a combination of poor control logic and software combined with a marginal camera. My guess is the restrictions on ordering it were more a safety/liability problem than parts issue. Since Ram stopped installing the system there are not enough of them in owners hands to have enough crashes and complaints to drive a formal recall yet. If you are using “ACC with stop and go” at low speeds in traffic and the system can cause the FCW to go off something is obviously not right. It can tell it’s about to crash, but it’s the one causing the situation. This is following directly behind a vehicle without either of us changing lanes. While following the car in front of is and slowing down for a stop light the ACC will release the brakes, begin accelerating, and set off the FCW. The same inputs being used to control the following distance are also telling the system a collision is about to happen so it has the inputs it needs to function properly, it just doesn’t.  

(4) That is the intelligent speed assist. It uses the traffic sign recognition (camera) that is standard on every 2022+ PM to automagically adjust the maximum speed setting for the adaptive cruise control. That’s an additional problem that I don’t have as our van does not have that feature. Good thing because the traffic sign recognition is not very good at reading the signs.  

How come you don't have this feature if you say it is standard? Indeed, I saw many posts on speed recognition - it just throws random numbers on the dash all the time. (The software must at least recognize that "a 53" can not be a speed limit...) I am inclined to change my order and ditch ACC (as much as I love this feature when implemented correctly)  

while these systems are on promasters, tesla have there own systems where an occasional run into a parked firetruck or police car happens, Boeing 2 airplane crashes, this stuff might be ok at 5 mph, it's not ready ....are u a statistic.....I do not use the cruise control much less lane control etc.....  

I have used adaptive cruise control on Ford vehicles at highway speeds where I would normally use conventional cruise control. A good example of where it is a great option - I5 in central CA. Many sections only have 2 lanes going each direction and both are full of vehicles and the vehicles speeds are constantly changing. (due to not enough lanes ) The right lane is mostly full of semi trucks moving goods (at a mandated 55 mph roughly ) so the left lane is mostly passenger vehicles. With normal cruise control, you have to constantly be adjusting the speed set point or drive manually, which is less fuel efficient. With adaptive cruise control, I just set the max sped that I want to go, and it auto adjusts to the (constantly varying ) speed of the vehicles in front of me. Of course in more complicated conditions, I turn off cruise control completely or over ride it. I would not buy a new vehicle without it.  

Seems like the PM continues to have trouble with practically every new driving assist gadget they introduce. This has been going on for a few years now. ACC is just the latest fiasco. Apparently others (Ford, etc) are doing better. I don't know if all RAM vehicles are experiencing these problems, or just PMs. It seems "safety features" were being rushed out the door without adequate safety testing. It makes me glad we brought in 2017 before all this hit the fan. Our PM's DCC (dinosaur cruise control) works just fine. I'm OK with doing some thinking and adapting myself. It stops me from following the GPS down a boat ramp.
