AJR pulls out as Jimmy Buffett's Summerfest replacement: 'A horrible, insane, scary year'

ajr tour cancelled 2023

AJR will no longer headline Milwaukee’s Summerfest July 6 − a show announced just this week as a fill in for a canceled Jimmy Buffett gig − nor will they open for Imagine Dragons at the same venue, the American Family Insurance Amphitheater, for the festival’s closing night July 8.

The band of brothers −Adam, Jack and Ryan Metzger −has a good and sad reason for scrapping the shows, and other planned appearances in July: Their father is seriously ill.

“For a year now, our Dad has been getting sicker and sicker . It’s been a horrible, insane, scary, beautiful year, and in the short future, it feels like our time with Gary might soon be over,” the band posted on their Facebook page Saturday. “We hope you guys can understand, we gotta cancel the upcoming July shows and spend as much time with him as possible. … We’re all lucky to have had the best Dad ever, and to have known such a caring, generous, loving human being. Love you guys so much, and speak soon.”

All previously purchased tickets for AJR’s headlining show July 6 at Summerfest will be refunded. The Imagine Dragons show July 8 is still scheduled but there's no word yet if a new opener will be booked.

AJR was announced as an opener for Dragons last year, but Summerfest officials didn’t announce the pop band’s own headlining show until last Tuesday.

Jimmy Buffett cancels concert: 'Margaritaville' singer hospitalized for 'issues that need immediate attention'

That’s because Jimmy Buffett was scheduled to headline the amphitheater July 6. But tickets for the ultimately canceled Buffett date never went on sale. In May, Buffett had to postpone a show after he was hospitalized . He has yet to resume touring.

Buffett never commented on the scrapped Summerfest show but festival officials said the appearance wasn’t happening “due to circumstances out of our control.”

There’s no word yet if Summerfest’s talent team will be able to announce a new amphitheater show for July 6 − but considering it’s less than a week away, the odds are not good.

If indeed the venue goes dark during Summerfest, it will be only the third time that’s happened, excluding the canceled Summerfest in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Megadeth canceled an amphitheater show in 2019 just days ahead of the scheduled show, and Justin Bieber did the same in 2022, both for health reasons.

AJR is canceling some of its upcoming tour dates due to a serious family illness.

The indie-pop trio, featuring brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met, were scheduled to perform at the new Roc the Lake Festival on Friday, July 7, at CMAC (Constellation Brands - Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center) in Canandaigua. Chelsea Cutler, Lawrence, Blake Rose and Almost Monday were scheduled to open the show, which is now being axed so the Met brothers can be by their father’s side.

“Hey guys, we want to be really honest with you about what’s going on in our lives right now. For a year now, our Dad has been getting sicker and sicker. It’s been a horrible, insane, scary, beautiful year, and in the short future, it feels like our time with Gary might soon be over,” AJR said in a statement . “We hope you guys can understand, we gotta cancel the upcoming July shows and spend as much time with him as possible... We’re all lucky to have had the best Dad ever, and to have known such a caring, generous, loving human being. Love you guys so much, and speak soon.”

CMAC said all tickets are being automatically refunded within 30 days at their point of purchase. If you purchased tickets in-person with cash at the CMAC box office, you will need to stop by the box office (open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12-4 p.m. and all show days beginning at 12 p.m.) to process your refund.

Tickets purchased from a third party will be processed through them.

“Our thoughts are with AJR and their family at this time,” the venue said in a statement .

AJR is a New York-based group known for hits “Weak,” “Burn the House Down,” “100 Bad Days,” “Bang!” and “World’s Smallest Violin.” The band drew 36,397 people to the NYS Fair’s Chevy Park stage in 2021, one of the largest crowds in New York State Fair concert history.

Other AJR performances expected to be affected include Summerfest in Milwaukee on Thursday and a Minneapolis concert on July 15.

AJR cancels Summerfest shows; Yung Gravy to fill Amp slot July 6

AJR (left) had to cancel both of their Summerfest appearances, with Yung Gravy stepping in to fill the July 6 amphitheater slot.

Updated: 7:23 p.m. July 2, 2023

A lot of bands — the functional ones anyway — call themselves a family. That’s literally true for AJR, the trio comprising the brothers Metzger: Adam, Jack and Ryan. Understandably, the group decided to put that family first when they received some difficult news this week and called off both their amphitheater shows at Summerfest, headlining July 6 and supporting Imagine Dragons on July 8.

For its part, the festival released a simple and supportive statement:

We love you AJR. We’re thinking of you and your family during this difficult time.

The AJR show at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater on July 6 is canceled. Refunds will be available at the point of purchase. Tickets purchased with a credit card will be refunded automatically.

AJR will no longer perform as a special guest with Imagine Dragons on July 8 at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater.

As anyone who has lost a loving father knows, there’s not a whole lot to be said beyond that. But we’ll join in the well-wishes and hope the brothers, as well as everyone affected by their dad’s illness, get the time and space they need to get through this.

Update: Summerfest announced Sunday morning that Yung Gravy, who closed the Generac Power Stage last Friday, will fill the vacant American Family Insurance Amphitheater slot July 6. The show is free with festival admission, and all seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

According to Summerfest organizers in a statement, the concert is free with festival admission. Seating in the Amphitheater for the Yung Gravy concert will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with no ticket required.

Yung Gravy already headlined a performance on June 30. This comes after AJR canceled their Summerfest show due to their father's death.

Jimmy Buffett also canceled his Summerfest appearance on short notice. AJR was supposed to be his replacement.

According to Summerfest's website, refunds will be available at the point of purchase, and tickets purchased with a credit card will be refunded automatically.

According to AJR's social media post:

"Hey guys, we want to be really honest with you about what’s going on in our lives right now. For a year now, our Dad has been getting sicker and sicker. It’s been a horrible, insane, scary, beautiful year, and in the short future, it feels like our time with Gary might soon be over. We hope you guys can understand, we gotta cancel the upcoming July shows and spend as much time with him as possible. (All your tickets will be refunded of course.) As we wrote the TMM album this past year, the emotions we went through ended up finding their way into the music, so when that comes out, hopefully it will shine more of a light into what we went through. We’re all lucky to have had the best Dad ever, and to have known such a caring, generous, loving human being. Love you guys so much, and speak soon."

MILWAUKEE, WI (July 2, 2023) – Summerfest presented by American Family Insurance is excited to announce Yung Gravy at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater this Thursday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m., as part of Summerfest’s 55 th anniversary. The concert is free with festival admission.   Seating in the Amphitheater for the Yung Gravy concert will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with no ticket required. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Summerfest is thrilled to welcome back Yung Gravy to the festival’s biggest stage, after his headlining performance on June 30 at the Generac Power Stage with Miller High Life. For more information visit Summerfest.com [milwaukeeworldfestivalinc.cmail20.com] About Yung Gravy Only the best things get better with age—wine, cheddar, 401ks, the list goes on. It turns out Yung Gravy gets better with age too. When you think about it, the name Yung Gravy says a great deal. It’s perpetually youthful, and it oozes “sauce.” As such, Yung Gravy uses his own special recipe to bring originality and positivity to make his one-of-a-kind impact on the genre. Gravy flexes his passion for soul music and oldies in his production, sampling a wide range of musical styles dating from the 1940’s to the present-day. Nostalgic and often-jubilant melodies paired with heavy trap drums form the usual canvas for his signature baritone voice—reminiscent of Barry White. Showcasing effortless flows and endlessly quotable lyrics, Yung Gravy paints something truly unique while clearly having a good time doing so. In the span of six short years, Gravy has transformed from Soundcloud stalwart to platinum powerhouse. To date, his accolades include three platinum andfour gold singles as well as 10 sold out tours of North America, Europe, and Australia. He has collaborated with his self-proclaimed musical heroes, including Lil Wayne, Chief Keef, Juicy J, T-Pain, and the late Young Dolph. Gravy became the soundtrack, and unofficial second mascot, of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and was given an honorary Stanley Cup Ring. He starred in a worldwide commercial campaign with Martha Stewart, and weeks later performed for the VMAs and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Not to mention, he partnered with Samsung and Jimmy John’s for campaigns. Tallying 6 billion streams and selling 5 million units thus far, he’s notched four entries on the Billboard 200, two in the Top 30 of the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart, and two on the Top 20 of the Top Album Sales Chart. He’ll hit the stage at Bottlerock and Hangout Music Festival in 2023. For all of the swagger and style he exhibited upon his arrival, he managed to become even smoother since his introduction in 2016. After streams in the billions, packed venues, and “side missions” with Martha Stewart, he stirred up his tastiest sauce yet on his 2022 third full-length opus, Marvelous [Republic Records] introduced by the chart-topping platinum-certifiedBillboard Hot 100 Top 30 single “Betty (Get Money).” About Summerfest presented by American Family Insurance Summerfest presented by American Family Insurance is one of the most iconic celebrations of music in America, hosting the industry’s biggest acts for an unforgettable live music experience. The tour will also include stops at several legendary venues, including Boston’s TD Garden, Austin’s Moody Center, Los Angeles’ Kia Forum, Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, and AJR’s hometown arena, Madison Square Garden. The tour will kick off on April 2, 2024 in Norfolk, VA and will conclude on August 2, 2024 in Washington, D.C. You can watch the teaser HERE and find full routing is available below.

On the road, AJR have recently toured across Europe throughout the Summer. They ignited a multitude of high-profile stages, including Lollapalooza Berlin, Zurich Openair Festival, and Szieget Festival, and capped off the year with SEMA Fest in Las Vegas last weekend.

Today, AJR officially released their fifth studio album, The Maybe Man, via their own AJR Productions label and Mercury/Republic Records. Last night, the band appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for their first-ever late night couch conversation. You can watch AJR’s interview HERE and their performance of “Yes I’m A Mess” on the show HERE . They are also set to perform the new single on Live with Kelly and Mark later this morning.

Across twelve dynamic tracks, AJR present their big, sad, titular superhero constantly questioning who he is - an incredibly relatable and often unspoken aspect of life. Stream the full album HERE and watch “The Maybe Man” music video HERE .

The album includes five previously released tracks, including “Yes I’m A Mess,” , which was just released and has already amassed 15M global streams, “The Dumb Song,” which has over 20M global streams and over 1M views on YouTube, “The DJ Is Crying For Help,” which has nearly 20M global streams and 4.5M views on YouTube, and “I Won’t,” which they premiered on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and has amassed over 52M global streams and nearly 7M views on Youtube. AJR also recently released “God Is Really Real,” which is written about their father, Gary Metzger, who tragically passed away earlier this year. The heartfelt song resonated in the hearts of listeners worldwide who had grown to love Gary as an unofficial fourth member of the band. See the band’s heartfelt letter to fans in response to their support HERE.

“In your mid-to-late twenties, you start to think about your life. There’s endless potential, but it’s also scary because you don’t know who you’re going to be. This album examines that personal existential crisis and the prevalent question of, ‘Who am I?’” AJR share . “We’ve experienced a lot this past year and decided to write about all the serious issues you face as you get older in the most AJR-way we could.”

The trio continues to put up staggering numbers on their music, crossing over five billion in global streams and climbing. Additionally, they sold upwards of 350,000 tickets in the US to their “OK Orchestra” World Tour, showcasing their biggest production yet and affirming them as one of the most consistently captivating and thrilling live acts. They brought the larger-than-life production to Australia and Europe as well. See clips from the OK Orchestra World Tour here & here .

AJR make the kind of music that encourages you to keep going. For as much as their multi-dimensional soundscapes, theatrical delivery, and big screen-worthy vision provide an escape, the multi-platinum, chart-topping trio of brothers – Adam [vocals/bass], Jack [vocals/guitar], and Ryan Met [guitar/piano/vocals] – also manage to intimately empathize with listeners everywhere. The band constructed an inimitable and immersive world soundtracked by a truly alternative vision for pop. Beyond five billion streams and counting, the group notched a string of seismic smashes, including “Bang!” (3x-platinum) and “Weak” (3x-platinum), “Burn The House Down” (2x-platinum), and “100 Bad Days” (platinum), “Sober Up” (platinum), and “I’m Ready” (platinum). Following their platinum breakout album The Click [2017], the boys consecutively crashed the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 with Neotheater [2019] and OK Orchestra [2021]. Recently, their song “World’s Smallest Violin” had a resurgence online with over two million video creates on TikTok with over 10 billion combined views between the official sound, original sounds, and sped up versions.

Traveling around the globe with their own version of the Greatest Show on Earth, they’ve packed arenas on multiple continents, selling nearly one million tickets thus far. In addition to earning widespread acclaim, they’ve ignited late-night television and are composing the score for Harold & the Purple Crayon on Broadway. Their debut album for Mercury Records/Republic Records, The Maybe Man, might just be their most identifiable body of work yet. In true AJR fashion, they came up with a larger-than-life way to explain the existential crisis of growing up and also process and deal with their father’s passing. Enter The Maybe Man. The title character is “a big sad superhero who is always questioning who he is.” Like a giant out of your favorite fairy tale (remade in kickass 3-D), emotion hangs over his head, so it doesn’t have to hang over yours.

AJR cancels Norfolk show with only hours notice citing unsatisfactory venue

ajr tour cancelled 2023

NORFOLK, Va. — Indie Pop band AJR said in a statement just hours before their Norfolk concert that they would be canceling the show due to issues with the size of the Scope Arena.

In a video posted to the band's Facebook page, lead singer Jack Met said the band would be rescheduling their show once a larger venue could be found.

Met went on to say that the band had developed their show with a larger venue in mind and that the Scope was not large enough in their opinion, for fans to enjoy the show as planned.

Met said he believed there had been some miscommunication regarding the size of the Scope Arena and only upon reaching Norfolk had the band realized.

The statement came on April 1, leading Met to spend the beginning of the video assuring fans that this wasn't an April Fools joke.

The City of Norfolk released a statement in response to AJR canceling their show announcing their disappointment with the decision.

The City said that the arena has hosted many elaborate productions in the past including Kevin Hart, Cirque du Soleil, Patriotic Festival, and more.

Roughly 5,875 ticketholders are awaiting information regarding a rescheduled show date, according to the City.

AJR puts on the best show out of every artist I have seen live.

They have created a show that that engulfs you in its visual theatrics yet at the same time feels as intimate as a house show in a living room. Throughout their entire journey to popularity they have stayed authentically AJR. When I'm at an AJR show I don't feel stupid for flaling around, expressing every emotion their music brings out of me because when I look up onstage I see the same.

Go to one of their shows, you won't forget it.

My 19 year old son and I went last year when they played at Hell's Kitchen in NYC. It was fantastic. The sound quality was amazing. It was packed. These guys are young enough to reach out to young people but have some skin in the game that they can communicate a good level of maturity for people older than they are so the music can be enjoyed across generations.

They remind us that although we have to grow up and be responsible adults don't grow up too much, remember to have a child-like heart, don't take everything so serious, and dance crazily every once in a while.

They are very intentional in their lyrics, the way they compose their music, and the way they present themselves; it's more than a performance or act, it's a message, and they carry that well. If you are willing to listen to all of it, the music, the words, the vibe, the talk, the moves, everything, then you will hear it, the message, their purpose to the world.

I have not been to a lot of concerts. A few, but I wouldn’t say many. This show, however, was the best one I have ever seen. The set list did not disappoint, and it was a full on production from start to finish. I laughed, I nearly cried, and while I was in the stands for this one, I will do everything I can to be in the pit for the next one. I’m writing this with absolute exhaustion in between classes because of the late night I had seeing AJR, but I think I could pass out and get a concussion with this show still being worth it.

ajr tour cancelled 2023

AJR cancels Norfolk show at Scope Arena

N ORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — AJR canceled their Norfolk show set to take place Tuesday at Scope Arena as the kickoff to their U.S. The Maybe Man Tour.

The band made the announcement on their social media platforms, saying “the scale of the show we want to give you guys just doesn’t fit in the venue.”

They made the announcement shortly after midnight Tuesday, the day of the opening night of their tour.

Jack Met, guitarist and singer for the band, explained the decision in a video on X that has since been removed.

In the video, Met said they touched down in Norfolk and thought everything was fine. After reaching the venue at Scope Arena, they realized the issue.

“And, we didn’t know this, but this venue can’t accommodate the show that we wanted to do size-wise,” Met said. “Something was lost in communication. I truly don’t know what happened. We’re still trying to figure it out.”

Met said they would not be able to do about 80% of the show they had planned.

AJR is a popular American Indie band, made up of three brothers, Adam, Jack and Ryan Met. Popular songs include, “World’s Smallest Violin”, “Bang!”, “Yes, I’m a Mess” and “Burn the House Down.”

In the video, Met said the band would reschedule the Norfolk show as soon as they can. Tuesday’s show has been removed from the tour schedule on the band’s website.

At publication Tuesday, Ticketmaster was still actively selling tickets to the canceled show. The show has been removed from the band’s website.

At 1:40 p.m., ticket holders received an email from Ticketmaster confirming that the event was postponed, with instructions to “hold on to your tickets.” Since the band is working to reschedule the show, Ticketmaster is not currently allowing refunds. That could change if no rescheduled date is announced within 60 days of the show was postponed. You can check your Ticketmaster Account for the most updated status of your event.

The city of Norfolk released a statement about the AJR Tour on Tuesday afternoon.

The city of Norfolk is disappointed by the decision of the AJR tour to postpone this evening’s show which was booked with Scope Arena a year ago. The 11,000-seat Scope Arena has hosted many elaborate music and entertainment productions, including Kevin Hart, Cirque du Soleil, Patriotic Festival, and internationally recognized entertainers, showcasing the venue’s capabilities to provide awe-inspiring and memorable experiences. More information will be provided to the roughly 5,875 ticketholders who purchased tickets for tonight’s concert, including a rescheduled show date, when it becomes available. We look forward to hosting AJR and their loyal fans very soon. — Statement from city of Norfolk on AJR show cancellation

The band posted on its Instagram story Wednesday that they are close to having a rescheduled date.

Here’s a screenshot of that post:

Fan reaction

The owner of an X page called @AJRTour said fans came from around North America to enjoy the tour opener.

Chey Speer from Chicago said the album release “The Maybe Man” album release was big for them. They went out to New York City for the release week for the band.

“We thought it would be really cool to come out and see, like, the first show of this tour together, which didn’t turn out the way we planned,” Speer said.

Katrina Mclean lives in Toronto and worked hard at her minimum wage job to be able to afford the trip to Norfolk. Mclean said she’s been to 30 shows and works to do these trips.

“Nothing has compared to what I’ve seen them do, what they put on a production and it’s not just a concert, it’s a full-fledged, like it’s like a Broadway show,” she said. “It tells a story from song to song. They have different transitions. Last tour, they had a whole treadmill interactive thing. The walls would slide in and out. It’s nothing compared to their shows, which is why I am always willing to travel for them.”

Ashlee Thompson from Harrisonburg was excited to hear that the first tour date was in the Commonwealth.

“It kind of meant a lot to me that the opening night was in Virginia, like, it’s where I live,” Thompson said. “So it was really personal to me and plus, like with all my friends, it was really nice.”

Emily Bundy from New York said she’s been a fan since middle school and was ready for another concert.

The friend group all learned around midnight the show was not going to happen.

“It was a bummer that it was canceled and like, the show isn’t happening anymore,” Thompson said. “Naturally, I’m a little upset.”

The sadness wore away and the group realized it wasn’t just them who traveled to see the band.

“We’re not the only people that flew here for this,” Bundy said.

They took to X and posted a fan meet up in Towne Point Park.

“Let’s do balloons, get a speaker, get snacks, and make this the most fun that we can,” Mclean said.

A dozen people came to the local park. People were singing and playing instruments to their favorite AJR songs.

The @AJRTour squad made a decision to go to the show on Wednesday in Philadelphia.

“I know tomorrow they’re going to put on the absolute best show that I will ever see, and I’m excited to see it multiple times on this tour and we’re doing our best to get there,” Mclean said. “We’re taking the same train together, figuring out hotels tomorrow, all like, it’s just kind of winging it.”

The tickets were a Christmas present for the DeBord family’s daughter and a birthday present for their oldest.

“I was quite looking forward to it, definitely disappointed it’s not tonight,” Riley DeBord said.

Mike Debord said he wished AJR just put on some kind of show in Norfolk for the fans.

“I thought there would be a little more homework done on their end,” Mike Debord said. “As an artist, I would have liked them to say, ‘Hey, we can’t give the fans what they wanted, but we will do an hour-and-a-half acoustic set. Y’all come out. We will give your money back. We are here for the music. It sounds like they just are like we tried and gave up. I wish they met us halfway.”

The family has no hard feelings for the band. They even snagged tickets to the Baltimore show Sunday and hope they can catch them in Norfolk if and when it is rescheduled.

WAVY has reached out to SevenVenues for a statement on this last-minute cancellation.

“In your mid-to-late twenties, you start to think about your life. There’s endless potential, but it’s also scary because you don’t know who you’re going to be. The trio continues to put up staggering numbers on their music, crossing over  5 billion in global streams and climbing.  Additionally, they sold upwards of  350,000 tickets   in the US  to their  “OK Orchestra”  World Tour , showcasing their biggest production yet and affirming them as one of the most consistently captivating and thrilling live acts. They brought the larger-than-life production to Australia and Europe as well. See clips from the  OK Orchestra World Tour   here  &  here .

AJR make the kind of music that encourages you to keep going. For as much as their multi-dimensional soundscapes, theatrical delivery, and big screen-worthy vision provide an escape, the multi-platinum, chart-topping trio of brothers—Adam [vocals/bass], Jack [vocals/guitar], and Ryan Met [guitar/piano/vocals]—also manage to intimately empathize with listeners everywhere. The band constructed an inimitable and immersive world soundtracked by a truly alternative vision for pop. Beyond  5 billion streams  and counting, the group notched a string of seismic smashes, including  “Bang!” (3x-platinum)  and  “Weak” (3x-platinum), “Burn The House Down” (2x-platinum),  and  “100 Bad Days” (platinum) , “Sober Up” (platinum) , and  “I’m Ready” (platinum) . Following their platinum breakout album  The Click  [2017] , the boys consecutively crashed the  Top 10 of the  Billboard  200  with   Neotheater  [2019]  and   OK Orchestra  [2021].  Recently, their song “World’s Smallest Violin” had a resurgence online with over 2 million video creates on TikTok with over 10 billion combined views between the official sound, original sounds, and sped up versions.

Traveling around the globe with their own version of the  Greatest Show on Earth , they’ve packed arenas on multiple continents, selling nearly 1 million tickets thus far. In addition to earning widespread acclaim, they’ve ignited late-night television and are composing the score for   Harold & the Purple Crayon   on Broadway. Their debut album for Mercury Records/Republic Records,  The Maybe Man , might just be their most identifiable body of work yet. In true AJR fashion, they came up with a larger-than-life way to explain the existential crisis of growing up and also process and deal with their father’s passing. Enter   The Maybe Man .  The title character is  “a big sad superhero who is always questioning who he is . ”   Like a giant out of your favorite fairy tale  (remade in kickass 3-D) , emotion hangs over his head, so it doesn’t have to hang over yours.

AJR's Maybe Man Tour Starts on April 3rd - Predicting the setlist and who is opening

By alex mcewen | apr 2, 2024.

iHeartRadio Y100's Jingle Ball 2023 - Show

Alternative band AJR is set to kick off their first arena tour tomorrow, the group's massive summer tour will see the band travel to 43 different cities across 30 states within the US. The tour will begin on April 3, 2024, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, and wrap on August 3, 2024, in Boston Massachusetts.

The tour was originally scheduled to begin today; however, due to issues with the venue, the show in Norfolk Virginia was canceled. The show will be rescheduled at a later date at a different venue, and Jack from AJR shared a video message regarding the situation.

The band has been doing a countdown across their social media channels, sharing teasers of what fans can expect to see on stage. If you want to attend an AJR show and the tickets were previously sold out, fear not! The band changed the layout of the stage and there is a small number of tickets available. Check with your local box office or on Ticketmaster .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by AJR (@ajrbrothers)

Who is opening for AJR on The Maybe Man Tour?

The group will be joined by three opening acts, Dean Lewis, mxmtoon, and Almost Monday. Lewis will be with the band for the first leg of the tour, from the opening show, until May 14, in Hollywood Florida.

There will be a bit of a break in the tour, then Almost Monday and mxmtoon will each have an opening set from June 25 to July 12, 2024. Beginning on July 14, mxmtoon will take over sole opening duties until the tour wraps on August 3.

What we know about The Maybe Man Tour and Predicting the Setlist

When AJR toured for their third album Neotheater their setlist was 17 songs. During the OK Orchestra tour, their setlist increased to 18 songs. Since this will be an arena tour, let's assume the setlist will grow once again, this time to 21 songs.

One big change that is confirmed via rehearsal clips the group has shared on social media is the band has added a violist. The newest performing member will join trumpeter Arnetta Johnson, and drummer Chris Barry, along with the three founder members Adam, Jack, and Ryan Met.

The Unofficial Maybe Man Tour Setlist

  • The Dumb Song
  • Touchy Feely Fool
  • 100 Bad Days
  • Way Less Sad
  • I Won't
  • The Good Part
  • Yes I'm a Mess
  • Don't Throw Out My Legos
  • Trumpet and Violin Melody (Traditionally, this is a mashup of songs played via a trumpet solo, I predict this time they will include the violinist as well)
  • 3'Oclock Things
  • World's Smallest Violin
  • Turning Out mashup of parts I, II, and III
  • The DJ is Crying for Help
  • God is Really Real

What do you think of this proposed setlist? What would you add or remove? Let us know in the comments or chime in on social media. Everyone who is planning to attend an AJR concert this summer have a great time, be safe, and make some core memories.

The Venue’s Too Small

A popular indie-pop band announces just ahead of the beginning of a major arena tour that their show can’t fit in the minor-league hockey venue they chose..

Filed under: ajr , cancellations , concerts , event planning , hockey , norfolk , norfolk scope , touring

This time a year ago, I had the chance to check out a hockey game at the Norfolk Scope. While not the newest thing around, it’s a pretty good venue, quite large, and it is definitely a great way to bring together 6,000 of your neighbors in a venue to watch a zamboni do its thing between periods.

An ice hockey rink for a professional team, even one in a minor league like the ECHL, is about 200 feet long, and 85 feet wide. You can fit a lot of things in it. Hockey players, for example. Comedy shows. Cultural events. Pretty sizable bands (Journey, as big a band as you can find historically, is apparently playing there later this month).

But one thing it does not apparently fit is scale, something we learned this week when the uber-popular indie pop band AJR announced on the night of its concert that it would cancel the show. The reason? The venue, in the band’s estimation, is too small for the show they wanted to put on.

This is a crazy thing to do. This was not just any show—this was the opener of the whole damn tour. In a local news clip , shared above, it discusses how people traveled from across North America to see this show. And now they’re presumably out plane fare or more, because the band chose to postpone a show that they logistically could not put together.

“We touched down in Norfolk, we thought everything was fine, and we got the venue, and we didn’t know this, but this venue can’t accommodate the show we want to do size-wise,” lead singer Jack Met stated on social media , later adding: “Something got lost in communication. I truly don’t know what happened.”

Now, let’s take a step back here. I know a little bit about event planning, having covered that space in a journalistic context for many years. Bands don’t just show up at a venue and figure out in real time that their equipment doesn’t fit in the venue, right? That would be a horrible way to run a business!

But it does happen, and even to some of the biggest bands around. Blink-182 cancelled a show in New Zealand recently “due to logistical issues outside of the band’s control.” Jennifer Lopez also had to cancel a significant portion of her tour for similar reasons.

And it’s not unheard of for a show starting a tour to get canceled just before it takes place: Drake recently had to drop a tour stop in Memphis. The reason, per Billboard : “Due to the magnitude of the production of the Drake concert, it is logistically impossible to bring the show as designed to the FedExForum on August 6th. Unfortunately, the show in cancelled.”

(That show, which was to take place at the home of the Memphis Grizzlies, had already been postponed.)

And the size of the venue appears not to be the lone factor: A Beyoncé show intended to take place at a football stadium in Pittsburgh was cancelled for similar logistical issues —but on the plus side, her team gave a month of notice.

Now, to be fair, the bounce-back from the pandemic has caused challenges across the concert industry, with supply-chain issues , challenges finding crews, and sky-high prices factors for bands big and small. But this doesn’t appear to be what happened here. It seems like someone should have done a site tour for this show ahead of time and either did not or got some important details seriously wrong.

(On the plus side, word is that it will be possible to still do the show at the Scope later in the tour!)

AJR, a trio of brothers whose intimate history is so much a part of their identity that their major-label debut was literally called Living Room , really hyped up their tour as “a chance to make a concert into a new kind of thing, a chance to create effects we’ve always wanted to, but never could, a chance to show you something I don’t think you’ve ever seen before.” (I don’t think I’ve ever seen a band cancel a show on the opening night of their national arena tour, with fans already outside of the venue, so they’re 1/1.)

One would assume that they had someone doing site tours and research ahead of time, to highlight these logistical issues before they became a problem, but based on the fact that they were completely surprised on the day of the tour, apparently not! (Or maybe, as has been hinted, the band didn’t sell enough tickets .)

I’m not an AJR fan—most of my association with them has been Anthony Fantano regularly trashing them. I have spent too long digging through Reddit threads trying to understand why a band like this can’t make this mid-sized hockey arena work, when freaking Journey has no issue.

But I gotta say, whatever happened here, it is not an amazing look.

Logistical Links

Normally, on The Voice , musical performances come from the contestants as they attempt to impress the Coaches and audiences watching at home, in an attempt to win the contest. However, it’s not only up-and-coming musicians. Sometimes musicians or bands who have already made it big grace The Voice ’s stage, as will be the case on the Season 24 finale . Earth, Wind & Fire, Keith Urban , Tyla, and AJR  all performed during the two-part finale's second night on Tuesday, December 19.

How to Watch

Watch  The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

If you’re not familiar with AJR, here’s what you need to know about the band before the big episode.

Who Is AJR?

AJR is an indie pop band consisting of brothers Adam, Jack, and Ryan Met — hence the name, AJR. All three brothers are vocalists in addition to being multi-instrumentalists. The group began busking in New York City in the late ‘00s and early ‘10s before breaking through in 2012 with their debut video, “I'm Ready.” The song, which features a sample of SpongeBob SquarePants , got the attention of “Chandelier” singer Sia after the brothers shared it on social media.

In late 2013, AJR released their debut major-label EP, 6foot1, and they released a few more tunes ahead of the first full album, 2015’s Living Room . Since then, the group has released four more LPs:  The Click (2017), Neotheater (2019), OK Orchestra (2021), and The Maybe Man (2023). In addition to “I’m Ready,” they’re known for singles like "Weak," "World's Smallest Violin,” and “Bang!”

During their performance on The Voice ’s season finale, AJR played a medley of two of the songs from their two most recent albums: “Bang!,” a cut from OK ORCHESTRA, and “Yes I’m a Mess,” from their latest album, “The Maybe Man.” Their performance made for a unique stage set-up, with a treadmill-style running man set-up at its center, as the band took the Voice stage complete with plenty of pyrotechnics.

Monday’s episode begins at 8/7c on NBC , and Tuesday’s — which will feature AJR’s performance — begins at 9/8c. Episodes will be available to stream on Peacock the following day.
