The province of Albay is known for being home to the iconic  Mount Mayon  or Mayon Volcano. However, it is worth noting that while it is one of the top tourist spots in Bicol Albay and one of the top Luzon tourist spots , an unobstructed view of its perfect cone is not guaranteed as this is dependent on the weather.

It’s a good thing there are plenty of other Albay tourist spots you can see when visiting the province, ensuring you get to enjoy your trip.

Located in the Bicol Region, Albay is roughly 450 kilometers away from Metro Manila , and its capital, Legazpi City is accessible via land trips or direct flights from Manila or Cebu.

While many travelers stay in Legazpi City, there are other places to visit in Albay that will not only give you majestic views of Mayon Volcano but also offer you other things to do in Albay including exploring natural attractions like beaches, islands, lakes, caves, rivers, waterfalls and parks, and visiting historical sites and cultural sites including churches and farms.

To help you plan your Albay itinerary , we’ve listed the top 20 tourist attractions in Albay that you can’t miss during your visit.

There is also a special cave opening that provides travelers a beautiful view of Mayon Volcano’s perfect cone.

With the majestic Mayon Volcano occupying a good chunk of the city’s skyline, Legazpi City in Albay needs no further introduction as a must-visit destination in the Philippines.

Mount Volcano’s beauty and might (and activity throughout the years) pave the way for exciting adventures any travel-savvy individual would love. For one, you can go on an ATV tour to explore the 5000-hectare park, which has the Mayon Volcano as its centerpiece. It’s also about lovely churches like St. Gregory the Great Cathedral, and happy occasions like the Ibalong Festival held every August.

A trip to Albay isn’t complete without visiting Cagsawa Ruins, the remnants of an eruption of Mayon Volcano in the past. Located in Daraga, this former Franciscan church was built in 1587 but was buried by the volcano’s eruption in 1814. Today, the surviving belfry has become a landmark and tells a story of resilience amidst catastrophe.

This spot offers a unique backdrop for photos, blending history and natural beauty with Mayon Volcano often visible in clear weather. Don’t miss out on the local handicrafts sold by vendors surrounding the site, as well as Bicol delicacies such as sili ice cream, pili, and more.

An architectural marvel with historical significance, Daraga Church (formally known as the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Porteria ) is one of the most iconic Albay tourist spots.

Built on top of a hill in the 18th century by Franciscan missionaries, the church offers a panoramic view of the Mayon Volcano. The church’s façade is an exquisite showcase of intricate stone carvings and elaborate baroque architecture. Inside, visitors are greeted by a calming ambiance, beautiful religious art, and stunning stained glass windows.

Daraga Church was declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Historical Institute in 2007. This church is not just a place of worship, but also a testament to Albay’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Legazpi Boulevard is another must-visit tourist attraction in Albay Province. This incredibly picturesque coastal road offers breathtaking views of the Albay gulf, set against the majestic backdrop of the Mayon Volcano.

Stretching over 2.2 kilometers, the boulevard is a favorite spot among locals for leisurely strolls, early morning jogs, or a chill evening hangout with its vibrant local food scene. But that’s not all — this bustling strip is also a hub of activity, hosting several events and festivals throughout the year.

The blue-green waters of the river, the mesmerizing rock formations, and the surrounding lush rainforest really attracts you and will make you wanna take a dive. The water is so crystal clear and naturally cold so I suggest you go ahead and take a swim!

7. Mayon Planetarium and Science Park

Another interesting attraction in Albay that will surely spark your interest in science, particularly in geology, volcanology, and seismology is the Mayon Planetarium and Science Park located in Tabaco , Albay. The facility, located at the foothills of the glorious Mayon Volcano itself is situated about 854 meters above sea level.

Aside from the planetarium itself, tourists can also enjoy a spectacular view of the Mayon Volcano from this area. There are also several cottages scattered all around where tourists can rest and leave their things while they explore around and take some pictures. Oh, and I suggest that you also drop by the Mayon Skyline View Deck and take some pictures there!

8. Japanese Tunnels at Ligñon Hills

Nestled within the beautiful Ligñon Hills is another tourist attraction that played a huge role in our country’s rich history. These are the L-shaped Japanese Tunnels in Ligñon Hills which were built by Japanese soldiers during the heat of World War II. The tunnels, usually about 3 feet high in some areas, were used to store ammunition and firearms. Caretakers say that some of these tunnels actually stretched all the way to the town’s municipality! That’s approximately 40 meters long! However, the tunnels eventually had to be collapsed so that the American soldiers won’t be able to access the ammunition.

Up to this date, there are still some remains and artifacts left by the Japanese inside the tunnels. This can also be a great learning experience for everyone because statues, posters, and other memorabilia depict what it was like being a soldier during World War II.

9. Pinamuntugan Island

Ah, one of Albay’s most underrated destinations is no other than the heavenly Pinamuntugan Island. Located off the coast of Cagraray Island , Pinamuntugan Island is definitely a wonderful and unique beach destination in the province.

Pinamuntugan Island

Photo from Around Bicol

With its creamy white sand beach, vibrant blue waters, spectacular rock formations, and most especially peaceful ambiance, I’m sure that you’ll have a great time being able to enjoy the tropical paradise all by yourself! You can easily tell that the island is wonderfully maintained and not very crowded because of the presence of several aquatic animals like sea urchins, starfishes, crabs, and many more.

10. Embarcadero de Legazpi

Well, if you’re already tired of roaming around the province in search of tourism gems and immersing yourself in the colorful culture of Albay, then let’s take a quick break and head to the Embarcadero de Legazpi.

Embarcadero de Legazpi

Photo from Embarcadero de Legazpi

This waterfront mall/business center has been the go-to spot for tourists in Albay who are looking for great restaurants, go shopping, or simply find a relaxing spot while enjoying the view of Legazpi Boulevard and its port of ships. There are many must-try restaurants and food establishments here as well as fun and exciting activities! There’s the Go-Cart, Segway, jet ski, and even zipline. All in all, taking a break at Embarcadero de Legazpi will surely be a wonderful idea to scale Albay’s landscape after a long, tiring day of adventure. So be sure to put this on your list!

11. Misibis Bay Resort

Ah, Misibis Bay Resort, being one of the most anticipated tropical getaway destinations in the country, should undoubtedly be included in your list to visit when in Albay.

Sitting at the beautiful Cagraray Island, Misibis Bay Resort promised fun and exciting experiences like no other! The pristine white sand beach, the turquoise waters, and the world-class accommodation features of the resort are absolutely top-class. Not to mention all the premium facilities and amenities waiting for you to enjoy such as the outdoor swimming pools, pool bars, gaming rooms, and amazing watersports activities like parasailing, windsurfing, and scuba diving!

Misibis Bay Resort

Another bonus feature of the Misibis Bay Resort is that you can actually ponder upon the majestic beauty of Mayon Volcano from the resort as well as the Nag-Aso Lake!

12. Vera Falls

Another astonishing natural wonder in Albay is the stunning Vera Falls located at the feet of Mt. Malinao . With crystalline waters cascading down the 25-meter drop of visually stunning rock formations, taking a swim here at Vera Falls is definitely an experience to remember.

Vera Falls

Photo from Bicol Tourism

The pristine and clean condition of the surroundings is also one thing to admire because it gives tourists a chance to be refreshed and really enjoys a relaxing experience. The water is also naturally cold which makes Vera Falls a perfect summer destination for everyone!

13. Tabaco Church

Located in the city of Tabaco, lies another significant religious landmark that demonstrates the strong Catholic faith of the Bicolanos. The Saint John the Baptist Parish Church or more commonly known as the Tabaco Church is one of the most beautiful and unique churches you’ll find in our country.

Tabaco Church

You may notice that the facade of the church is somehow darker in color than most, right? Well, this is because the church was built using dark volcanic stones and soil which are prominent around the area!

14. Kawa-Kawa Hill and Natural Park

If you’re looking for the best place in Albay to go on a pilgrimage during the Holy Week or just find a peaceful and relaxing destination to ease your mind, then I suggest you visit the Kawa-Kawa Hill and Natural Park. The ambiance and lush vibrance of the hill will really make you feel calm and relaxed all throughout your stay.

There are several plants, trees, and also religious statues like the ones depicting the Stations of the Cross. During the Holy Week, a lot of locals and tourists gather at the Kawa-Kawa Hill and Natural Park to perform their penitence and complete their traditional Visita Iglesia. Oh, and just some quick trivia! The reason why the park is called “Kawa-Kawa” is that the shape of the hill resembles a volcano’s caldera, which is called “kawa” in the Bicolano language.

15. Sumlang Lake

Finally! To conclude our amazing Albay adventure, our last but absolutely not the least destination is the scenic Sumlang Lake. The beautiful lake is one of the few places in Bicol where you can actually have a whole and unobstructed view of the Mayon Volcano. So, you already know what to do.

Legazpi City FB

This is one of the best photo opportunities you can get so I suggest you make the most out of it! Aside from relaxing and sightseeing, tourists can also enjoy some exciting activities like kayaking, bamboo rafting, and even food tripping! Make sure to fill your tummies as well as your camera’s memory because visiting Sumlang Lake while you’re in Albay is definitely something you shouldn’t miss.

10 Best Things To Do In Legazpi Philippines 2024

Sharing is caring!

In the eastern part of the Philippines lies Legazpi City. A short flight from Manila, the city sits in the shadow of Mount Mayon . A 20 million year old active volcano that offers both wild adventure and captivating history.

The off the beaten track destination of Legazpi Philippines has plenty to keep you busy for three days and can be combined with a trip to the Caramoan Islands , to really get a sense of this often overlooked region of Bicol Philippines .

As there is little tourist information online about Legazpi City, I’ve created a travel guide for you including the Top 10 Things to do in Legazpi Philippines.

This article may contain affiliate links. If you purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to yourself. This helps towards the upkeep of this website for which I am grateful.

Where is Legazpi Philippines?

Legazpi City is the capital of Albay, in the region of Bicol located on the southern end of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago.

Legazpi City used to be a small farming and fishing village but is now a bustling city, home to 200,000 people, and one of the Philippines’ top adventure tourism destinations.

This is mainly due to the world-famous Mayon Volcano, which provides plenty of adrenaline fuelled activities (see Top 10 Things to do in Legazpi ).

How To Get To Legazpi City Philippines

From Manila you can fly or drive to Legazpi City, depending on how much time and budget you have.

By Air – Legazpi Airport in Albay is serviced by Philippines Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Cebgo airlines.

The journey from Manila to Legazpi is only one hour by plane, and there are several flights running daily.

By Car or Bus – The drive from Manila to Legazpi is 500km taking 9 to 11 hours on average.

How Many Days in Legazpi

The perfect amount of time to spend in Legazpi City is two to three days, this gives you enough time to see and do everything on offer in the city of fun and adventure.

If you are visiting other destinations in Bicol , make sure you have at least a week so you can explore the top 3 places in the region , Legazpi City, the islands in Caramoan and Donsol.

When to Visit Legazpi Philippines

Due to its tropical rainforest climate, Legazpi City experiences a considerable amount of rainfall each year.

In terms of weather, January is the coolest month and March to May are considered summer months.

However, I visited during November, which was a great time of year, as it was still warm but not too as hot as summer, and all the outdoor activities were still possible.

Where To Stay In Legazpi City Philippines

As mentioned before, Legazpi City is off the beaten track , therefore big hotel chains and resorts have not yet made it to the Bicol region .

However there are plenty of hotels available including the Oriental Hotel Legazpi which is famous for its pool view of Mayon Volcano, and Casa Simeon which would be my recommendation, for its history and boutique feel (See #7 below).

10 Things to do in Legazpi Philippines

1. revel in the volcano views.

Not surprisingly, one of the main reasons why people flock to Legazpi City is to see the astonishing Mayon Volcano. In addition to being overwhelmingly beautiful, its perfect conical shape also features on the countries 100 Peso bill.

The Philippine’s most active volcano can be viewed from almost anywhere in the city as it towers over the landscape.

However for an unobstructed panoramic view of Mount Mayon I’d suggest visiting   Legazpi boulevard , Lingon Hill , Sumlang lake or Mayon Volcano observatory .

Ideal times are early mornings or late evenings when the tip of the volcano is less likely to be obscured by clouds.

2. Ride An ATV Around The Base Of Mayon Volcano

It wasn’t my first time on an ATV, in fact it wasn’t my first time on an ATV on a volcano (think back to Iceland last year).

However, my Mount Mayon ATV experience stood out as the highlight of my trip to Legazpi City.

Above all, it was an opportunity to get up close and personal with the active volcano that had been looming over us for our entire trip to the Philippines.

The road to Mayon Volcano was more like a dirt path, it took us through gullies, rivers, and fallen rock.

The entire trail was made by nature and by years of eruptions and fury.

As a result, the path was bordered by palm trees, able to grow tall and strong from the nutrient rich volcanic soil.

However as we drew closer to the foot of Mount Mayon the scenery changed drastically.

We were surrounded by large volcanic boulders, and it was hard to believe we were still in Legazpi Philippines!

A rain or shine activity, we chose the most advanced route, called the “Black Lava” trail .

The ATV ride lasted several hours and took us to 2100 ft elevation, where the lava rocks lay from the most recent eruption in 2006.

In short there are plenty of ATV routes to Mayon Volcano to choose from, some lasting as little as 45 minutes, so whatever your experience level or age, it is easy to find a Mayon ATV tour to suit you.

3. Zip Lining From The Base Of Mayon Volcano

A popular activity at the lava wall of Mayon Volcano is to try the 300 meter zip-line.

After the Mayon Volcano ATV tour , we spent a few minutes hiking the lava wall, to get a panoramic view of the area.

When it was time to head back I had the choice of either hiking back downhill or zip-lining all the way to the base camp.

As an adventure seeker, I obviously chose the latter, and even though the experience only lasted a short time, it was a fun way to end our day exploring Mount Mayon Volcano and at the price of 300 pesos ($5 USD) the zip-line hardly broke the bank!

View this post on Instagram                   Over the years I’ve had countless experiences with active and dormant volcanoes in 13 countries. ? From hiking and camping to mountain biking and ATV riding, the adrenaline rush coupled with the panoramic views over the clouds just can’t be beaten. If you want to try something different, I recommend volcano boarding in Nicaragua, bathing in a mud volcano in Colombia or ziplining off a lava wall in the Philippines (pictured above). . Is anyone else a bit of a volcano junkie? . #thewanderlustwithin #itsmorefuninthephilippines @philippines_uk #tpbgovph #UKblogsPH A post shared by Roshni | The Wanderlust Within (@thewanderlustwithin) on Jan 12, 2019 at 11:14am PST

4. Visit Legazpi Boulevard, Bicol Philippines

One of the top Legazpi tourist attractions is the boulevard.

Legazpi boulevard offers stunning views of Mount Mayon across a glistening lake.

A great place to sample Bicol’s street food but an even better place for unrivalled sunset views of the volcano.

In addition, Legazpi Boulevard is also a popular spot for running enthusiasts, and those wanting to practise their photography in the Philippines.

Most Legazpi tour itinerary include a visit to Legazpi boulevard as well as other Mayon Volcano tourist activities.

5. Relax At Sumlang Lake, Legazpi Philippines

A particularly tranquil hotspot for families, friends and couples, Sumlang Lake near Cagsawa Ruins , is a great day out in Legazpi Philippines.

Aside from the varied Bicolano cuisine on offer, the numerous local handicrafts on sale, and the unique close up view of Mayon Volcano.

Sumlang Lake also has ample opportunities to take part in water-sports such as kayaking, fishing, rafting and aqua biking, all great things to do in the Philippines.

6. Sample Bicol’s Famous Chilli Ice Cream

Legazpi City was the first time I’ve come across Chilli Ice Cream on a menu, but as the region is known for its spicy food it doesn’t surprise me #onlyinthephilippines as they say!

However 1st Colonial restaurant serves three different strengths of red hot ice cream topped with a real chilli.

Laced with local siling labuyo chilli and coconut milk, you might be pleasantly surprised at how well the combination of hot and cold work.

The three levels of spice exist so all customers can sample the unique ice cream.

Level 1 is suitable for children, Level 2 has a tickling and pinching sensation and Level 3 also known as the Mayon Volcano level – has the strongest kick, and is even served alongside an ounce of milk to balance the heat.

Chilli Ice cream can only found in the city of Legazpi, so which of the three spicy deserts would you be brave enough to try?

7. Take A Step Back In Time And Spend The Night In A Colonial House

A rich and glossy shade of brown adorns the wooden floors and walls of this beautifully restored 1920s colonial home.

Casa Simeon just outside Legazpi Philippines has recently opened as a guesthouse and restaurant, but has the most wonderful homely feel to it.

We didn’t get the chance to stay here (next time I hope!) but we enjoyed a three course home cooked meal with the family on our final night in Bicol Philippines .

We spent the evening sipping wine and hearing interesting tales from the colonial days, with this trip back in time.

8. Cagsawa Ruins Park, Legazpi Philippines

Just around the corner from Sumlang Lake is the Cagsawa Ruins Park.

It is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Legazpi and the ruins are the remains of a church that was built by the Franciscans in the 17th Century.

The church was destroyed by Dutch pirates and then again in 1814 when Mount Mayon erupted.

On a clear day you can see Mt. Mayon just behind the ruins, and this national treasure one of the most popular photography spots in Bicol Legazpi Philippines.

9. Daraga Church, Legazpi City Philippines

Daraga Church is one of the most popular tourist spots in Legazpi Albay.

Also known as the Nuestra Señora de la Porteria Parish Church, it was built in 1772 by the Franciscans in Daraga, Albay.

The unique white structure is made from volcanic rocks, and set on top of a hill with a clear view of Mt Mayon in the background, it’s no wonder Daraga Church is the most famous in Legazpi Philippines.

10. Busay Falls

Just outside Legazpi City, around a 45 minute drive away, are the enchanting Busay Falls .

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Albay, these 91 meter high waterfalls are a natural gem surrounding by a bustling forest.

The Busay waterfalls are actually made up of seven tiers , which is why they are often called ‘7 Falls’.

The first two levels of waterfalls are easy to reach but the others will require hiking to.

Where To Go Next After Legazpi City

Legazpi City is situated in the Philippines region of Bicol .

There are plenty of great attractions for tourists within Bicol but my favourites are diving with whale sharks in Donsol and visiting the hidden gem of the Caramoan Islands .

This jewel in the Camarines Sur is full of deserted islands just waiting to be discovered.

You will need at least three nights in the Caramoan Islands to explore everything on offer, including the island hopping and fresh seafood.

The journey from Legazpi to Caramoan involves a three hour drive to Sabang Port followed by two hours on a speedboat to the Caramoan Islands, which are dubbed one of the most beautiful islands in Asia .

LEGAZPI ALBAY TRAVEL GUIDE: Mayon Volcano and 6 Best Things To Do

Legazpi City which is popularly known as the City of Fun and Adventure, is the home of the world-famous Mount Mayon — a perfect-cone shaped volcano and also the most active one in the Philippines . Legazpi is a capital of the Province of Albay in the Bicol Region offering a fusion of nature, adventure, culture experience, and delicious must-try cuisines with locals that warmly welcomes you.

Why travel to Legazpi City in Albay? Simple, because of Mount Mayon. As a first time tourist in Legazpi, even before the plane has landed, I was wowed by the greatness of Mayon even though I only saw the tip of it through the window of an airplane at 6 AM.

There is no other way that I can explain the feeling of seeing something famous and historical. It was an emotional experience for me ’cause I only see it in Philippine history books and the glimpse of it felt unreal.

6 Best Things To Do in Legazpi City, Albay

Legazpi maybe famous for Mount Mayon, but I was surprised about everything that I have experienced. While the purpose wasn’t actually to tour Legazpi, I had a great adventure in a short span of time. Given the time constraints, here are the best things to do that I did in Legazpi, Albay.

1. MAYON VOLCANO ATV ADVENTURE – Best Thing To Do in Legazpi

Mount Mayon being the must-see and the top tier attraction in Legazpi, I need to gaze at it in the best way possible that I can. The only way that you can feast your eyes on looking her majesty is through an ATV adventure.

atv adventure legazpi albay

Mayon Volcano ATV adventure is the best thing to do in Legazpi. I booked the Mount Mayon SkyDrive ATV Experience through Klook . Regardless if you have tried ATV before or not, you will be practicing for a couple of minutes on the ground practice area before going to your chosen trail.

I chose the Skydrive grassland trail for ₱500 in 20-30 minutes activity time ’cause I just want to take photos of Mayon. But I highly suggest to book its best selling Skydrive Combo Trail in 50-60 minutes for ₱1,250. You will be passing through the extreme route of Sykdrive river, then go to snake trail, and then Cagsawa Forest Trail. I know it’s worth it.

💡   PRO TIP : Mayon Volcano ATV Adventure is best to do in the morning as early as 6:30 AM because of lesser clouds around Mount Mayon, so you can actually see its symmetric volcano cones clearly.

2. CAGSAWA RUINS — Best Tourist Attraction in Legazpi

To be able to see Mount Mayon is already overwhelming but the sight of it with another historical landmark in Cagsawa Ruins Park was beyond breathtaking.

cagsawa ruins park legazpi

Cagsawa Ruins is the best tourist attraction in Legazpi. It is located just outside the city of Daraga. Being the most popular tourist destination, this is where you can spend so much of your time taking photos, doing activities, shopping souvenirs, and try authentic Bicol food. It has an environmental fee of ₱20 for adult.

💡   PRO TIP: On your first day in Legazpi, visit Cagsawa ruins first because it has almost everything that you need to try and experience such as visiting the Bicol National museum, trying chili ice cream, ATV rides and more. Go there as early as 7AM before it gets too crowded, have lunch, and shop for souvenirs.

3. DARAGA CHURCH — Best Church in Legazpi

The best view of Mount Mayon is when you’re in Daraga Church. If you’re lucky enough that she’s not hiding behind the clouds, you’ll get the perfect parallel eye level of her. This late 18th century church is standing there as a sign of unwavering faith of Bicolanos and their resilience.

LegazpiAlbay 03

Situated on a hilltop with a commanding view of Mayon Volcano, Daraga Church is one of the most visited churches in Albay. It is also known as Our Lady of the Gate or the church of Nuestra Senora de la Porteria and has been declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2007 and a National Historical Landmark in 2008. With those recognitions, Daraga Church must be on top of your list when you visit Legazpi.

4. NATIONAL MUSEUM BICOL

The NM Bicol Regional Museum (National Museum Bicol) is located next to the Cagsawa Church Ruins, a National Cultural Treasure (NCT).

Its exhibitions will feature the unique geological landscapes of Bicol that will underscore the marvels of Mayon. The museum is open everyday except Monday. If you have plan on visiting Bicol Regional museum, I advise to not schedule your Cagsawa Ruins Park that falls on Monday It saves you lots of time. Admission is free plus you get to visit their butterfly garden just beside the museum.

5. PINANGAT AND BICOL EXPRESS BAGNET — Best Food To Try in Legazpi

Bicol is known for dishes that owe its texture and creaminess to coconut milk (gata) and its spicy kick to chilis. The food culture in Bicol region has much excitement to offer that’s why it’s a gastronomic adventure I didn’t miss in Legazpi.

LegazpiAlbay 07

Among the best of Bicol is the Pinangat. This one is made of fish or shrimp wrapped in gabi or yam leaves and cooked in, of course, coconut milk. Bicol

How To Get To Legazpi CITY, Albay?

Getting around the city of legazpi.

Finding transportation is fairly easy in the city of Legazpi. Public utility vehicles such as tricycles, jeepneys, UV Express vans, and taxis are available. Good news to travelers that loves to pay extra just to be convenient, Grab car is now fully operational in Legazpi City. The grab fare from Bicol International Airport to an Airbnb in Daraga, Legazpi is around ₱400 – ₱500. It’s way cheaper than taking taxi honestly.

that’s a beautiful Mayon and a beautiful you. Glad to see new angles of the volcano and of the church. I haven’t been there. How I wish I could travel there someday.

Legazpi and the whole Albay is beautiful. I used to live there during my university days and I love it. But one thing that makes me keep on coming back to Legazpi is not actually the Mayon Volcano, but the people I’ve met through the years. I love dining to this small food kiosk that serve comfort food (lugaw with eggs) each night near Albay Astrodome. Food is indeed making the place standout.

15 Best Things to Do in Legazpi City (the Philippines)

Legpazi City calls itself “the city of fun and adventure” and for good reason. This city is home to Mt. Mayon, a 20 million year old active volcano that offers both wild adventure and captivating history. While you’re here, you have the chance to explore around the base of the volcano with ATV tours, hiking, photography, and more. While capturing unbelievable views, you’ll learn about its active history of eruptions that have wiped out entire populations and desecrated whole villages.

Named after Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, a Spanish conquistador, there is a lot of history and culture to be experienced in Legazpi City. You’ll have the chance to visit monuments which represent the many nationalities who have once called this island home or refuge like the Franciscan church, the Spanish pier, and the Japanese tunnels. From adventure to history and shopping to eating, if Legazpi City isn’t already on your list of places to visit in the Philippines, it absolutely will be after today.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Legazpi City :

1. Cagsawa Ruins Park

Cagsawa Ruins Park

Built in 1587 destroyed in 1646, then reconstructed in 1724 and once again destroyed in 1814 (along with thousands of native people)- this Franciscan church certainly has some stories to tell.

On a clear day, Mt. Mayon sits perfectly behind the Cagsawa Ruins separated only by a plain of bright green rice fields.

The church ruins are what mysterious thriller movies are made of.

There is a unique juxtaposition between the crumbling brick church with rogue greenery growing out of its cracks against serene nature that feels pure and wholesome.

It’s an unexpected discovery that gets your mind racing.

You can take ‘the Leaning Tower of Pisa’ style photos or just gawk at the wonder that surrounds this ancient location.

2. Mayon Volcano National Park

Mayon Volcano National Park

You’ll see Mt. Mayon everywhere you go in Legazpi and eventually get curious enough to get a little bit closer.

You can hike along the base of the volcano, take an ATV tour, or go with a Jeepney tour that will take you up to the closes to the observatory.

There are plenty of ways to get a bit more personal with this insane natural wonder.

As Mt. Mayon is an active volcano, you’ll see a puff of smoke coming from its peak and a small cloud of smoke hanging just above it.

It’s so idyllic that it looks like a painting! The base of the mountain consists of flat plains, rice fields, creeks, and rivers, all waiting to be explored.

3. Vera Falls

Vera Falls

This stunning waterfall is located between two volcanoes on the other side of Mt. Mayon where you’ll have to cross through a couple of small towns to get there.

You’ll hire a car or join a tour group to take a 40- minute drive from Legazpi center.

Take advantage of the small town prices and culture by asking your driver to stop for a bite to eat.

When you reach the car park, you’ll embark on a walk down a set of 100 jungle stairs that will lead you to the beautiful Vera Falls.

There is a cool and shallow pool of water at the base of the waterfall perfect for splashing about on a hot day in the Philippines.

4. Japanese Tunnels

Japanese Tunnels

As you may know, the Philippines were caught up in WWII with a Japanese invasion that has left its mark on the country in many ways, including left over infrastructure.

In Oriental-Legazpi, you can visit a Japanese-dug tunnel from 1941. Back in the day, the tunnel stretched all the way to city hall.

Today, the tunnel isn’t quite as long but still offers a decent amount of crawl space to get your heart racing.

Climb around through the tunnel where the height ranges from 3-4 feet tall.

It is set seemingly in the middle of nowhere; a jungle tunnel that the Japanese thought no one would ever find.

5. Quitinday Underground River

Quitinday Underground River

It’s worth it to visit Legazpi just to experience the Quitinday Underground River.

Hire a driver to take the 30-minute drive.

Get out and walk 500m along a jungle path until you get to a small watering hole.

At first glance, it looks like there’s not much to be seen…but this is only the beginning.

For ₱100, a tour guide on site will take you rafting through the underground river where you’ll see a complex system of natural caves that have been formed by water erosion.

Some caves you can walk through with small waterfalls at your feet.

Others you will raft through, like the Calabidongan Cave, otherwise known as “Cave of Bats”. If you’re brave enough, take a cliff dive into a pool of natural aquamarine water.

6. Daraga Church

Daraga Church

This church is so majestic that it doesn’t even look real.

Set atop a hill with Mt. Mayon in the background, this white towering piece of architecture looks like every castle from a Disney movie ever.

But dig a little bit deeper and you’ll discover that this church has served as a pillar of faith in this community since it was built by Franciscan missionaries in 1773.

During the church’s 230-year life, it has seen so much including a devastating volcano eruption in 1814 that killed 2,00 people, as well as centuries of national instability with wars, invasions, and corruption.

7. Colonial Grill

Colonial Grill

In Legazpi City, there is a Filipino restaurant you have to try.  It is mid-range in price, has plenty of space for big groups, and their food keeps them standing as a local favorite.

Check out Colonial Grill’s “Best Sellers” list full of dishes that never disappoint, such as Buko Chopseuy, Spicy Shrimp, and Tinapa rice.

Portions come out huge in family-style serving dishes so you and your crew can try a little bit of everything.

But, you mustn’t leave without trying the Sili Ice Cream made with chilies- it is to die for.

The staff is friendly and accommodating, so if you have any questions about the menu or want some recommendations, they are happy to oblige.

There are plenty of tours to choose, some lasting 45-minutes and others lasting 4 hours! No matter your skill, experience, or age, the tour leaders will find a way to comfortably accommodate you.

You can hike up the steep hill anytime you’d like with the Kapit Tuko Trail (Lizard Grip Trail) taking just 10 minutes- but I must warn you, it’s a challenge.

11. Bar 101

Bar 101

If you’re looking for a little nightlife in Legazpi City, you’ve got to go to Bar 101. This is the spot where locals go to play billiards next to a huge backdrop of the Beatles, listen to live music under fluorescent lights, get loose on the dance floor, visit the private karaoke room and drink some cold beers with some friendly strangers.

Technically, you’re not supposed to smoke here but it seems that no one really follows that rule.

Open until midnight!

13. Albay Capitol Atrium Art Gallery

LEGAZPI CITY, ALBAY, AND ITS TOURIST SPOTS

Many travelers have given their reviews, blogs, and even vlogs about their adventures in the beautiful and scenic place of Legazpi, Albay but none of those gave justice (and I guess no one will ever will) about the true beauty of this place. Legazpi City hailed as one of the top growing cities in the Philippines continuously and progressively serves the adventure and tourism of the place. In fact, it is not on its way in developing the place as the leading place in terms of scenic tourist spots, nerve-wracking adventures, food, and great hospitality towards the guests and visitors.

And of course, we’ve all heard the world’s famous Mayon Volcano which is considered as a perfect shaped volcano. Not only it gives a beautiful scenery in the area but it also provides for the living of the locals in the area because they get to earn by selling native goods and products especially when there are a lot of tourists visiting the place. As we all know, the region of Bicol has a lot of things to offer such as beaches, diving sites, antique churches, and other heritage sites. These places will surely make your vacation a one of a kind experience!

Another must-visit place when in Albay is the historical Daraga Church sitting atop a hill in Barangay Santa Maria in the Municipality of Daraga, Albay. The church which was established in 1772 as a settlement by people from Cagsawa, due to their fear of another devastating eruption of the Mayon Volcano. 'Bicol Loco' a big win for tourism, says sponsor-solon

At a glance.

House Committee on Appropriations Chairman Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Zaldy Co described the first ever Bicol Loco Hot Air Balloon Festival as a triumph for Philippine tourism.

Held in Legazpi, Albay, the festival ran from May 3 to 5.

A triumph for Philippine tourism.   That's how House Committee on Appropriations Chairman Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Zaldy Co described the first ever Bicol Loco Hot Air Balloon Festival recently held in Legazpi, Albay.   The event--practically entirely bankrolled by Co--drew an impressive 165,000 attendees to the Old Legazpi Airport from May 3 to 5.   Co says that his goal is "to make this attraction available every day, all year round, and not just three days in a year. This is to create more jobs for locals because that is what we need most here in Bicol."   The festival also aims to showcase the enchanting beauty of the Bicol region, home to the iconic Mayon Volcano.   “We're committed to showing Bicol's charm to the world. My vision is to put Bicol on the world tourism map. Kailangan malaman ng buong mundo kung gaano kaganda ang Bicol. Unang-una na dyan ang bulkang Mayon,” said the Bicol lawmaker.   (The entire world must know just how beautiful Bicol is. And foremost there is Mayon Volcano.)   READ THIS:   https://mb.com.ph/2024/5/3/zero-return-of-investment-bicol-solon-happy-to-drain-own-pocket-for-hot-air-balloon-event

“We want to share Bicol’s natural splendor with the world. I know we can be a premier tourist destination. And this will create jobs, jobs, jobs. Bicol’s landscapes are Instagrammable, our culture is vibrant, and our hospitality is warm. I want Bicol to emerge as a must-visit locale on the global tourism stage,” he added.   The appropriations panel chairman's vision, coupled with the support of key figures like Capt. Joy Roa of Air Safari, ensured the festival's resounding success.   “For years, tourists have overlooked Bicol's potential. Now, with this festival, we are showcasing our region's splendor and inviting the world to experience it,” he said.  During the weekend extravaganza, participants were treated to a kaleidoscope of entertaining experiences, blending adventure, music, and a lavish raffle prizes that included four units of house and lot worth P1.5 million each.
