As a professional woman, if you answered yes to one of these questions, you may be feeling stuck, perhaps even desperate, ready to navigate a new journey. Those of us who aren't in tune with our authentic selves are ignoring what our souls are crying out for, says Ann Rusnak, author, speaker and self-confidence expert. Whether they put up with abusive situations, reside in a constant state of fear, or don't value their worth, women who are stuck may have one or several issues slowly eating away at their self-esteem. The problem is they don't know how to break free of old, self-sabotaging behaviors.

About the author.

Ann Rusnak totally enjoys life, her success and feels great about herself. Ann is passionate about helping determined women entrepreneurs in a supportive, practical way so they can make positive changes about their limiting money. But there was time when it wasn’t so. Ann’s parents raised her with the false message there was something wrong with her. She often shares this statement with audiences at her workshops, “My dreams were wrong, and, pursuing a better life was wrong.” As a result, she often sabotaged her goals, especially financial ones.

Ann’s journey of self-discovery resulted in breaking the cycle of emotional abuse, so she could finally step into her own power. She created a new legacy for future generations., by raising an independent, self-assured, self-confident daughter, now a young woman who believes in herself one hundred percent.

She started her own business and quickly was earning six figures. When she became ill, she wisely developed a system where she could keep her business growing and thriving in tiny 15-minutes increments. Then, she sold her unique time management programs to other time-starved, stressed entrepreneurs.

Ann combined her 25 years of business experience and her personal self-discovery journey to create of the powerful ‘Unstoppable Success System.’ She is excited to share this simple process which empowers women with the clarity and confidence to easily and effortlessly attract more ideal clients.

The Promise

Marie begins to tremble. It feels like her insides are tearing apart. Her mind fragments into tiny pieces. She can't tell where she is as she watches something devour the dim lighting.

She knows something is wrong ... very wrong.

The recesses of her mind darken, hiding any sense of the life she knows. Her out-stretched arms to feel the way through the darkness. She stumbles and trips falling deeper into the unknown.

Drifting in and out of consciousness, chaos swirls through her mind and she continues reaching, trying to grab onto anything stable. She desperately wants to feel safe and secure again.

Something in this black void reaches out and grabs her throat. She feels a pressure growing tighter, choking out any remaining sense of reality. She's not sure she can tell the difference between real or fantasy any more.

Marie gasps for air. She craves a life of inner peace and tries to pull herself out of the abyss. A loud noise outside jolts her from her nightmarish sleep. The remnants leave her mind foggy and for a brief instance she wonders where she is.

She sits upright in bed and is bathed in sunlight. She realizes she couldn't ask for a truer friend than Barb, who offered her the use of her Georgia coast beach front cottage while she and her father are away.

Marie's daughter, Elizabeth, is at summer camp, making this the perfect opportunity to take time for herself. She needs to gather her thoughts after her recent decision to separate from her husband, Lloyd.

Marie shakes herself free of the leftover nightmarish feelings and heads for the bathroom to take a shower.

She steps into the spa-like enclosure and lets the warm pulsating water from various sprays massage away the edgy moments of her dream. The comforting waters from the ceiling sprays feel like a gentle rain. She enjoys the smooth-flowing streams running down her back as it rinses the shampoo out of her shoulder length brunette hair.

Marie feels her family's disappointment weighing heavily upon her. She still finds it frustrating that they practically blame her for the discord of her eleven-year marriage. As the warm water drizzles down her slim body, she hears her parents' voices echoing in her head, telling her she's behaving in a selfish way. She replays their accusing tone as they tell her she's only thinking about herself and not her daughter.

Would they understand if she told them a divorce will protect Elizabeth from a father who berates her? That a divorce will allow Marie to keep a promise she made to God? Probably not. From past experience, any explanation would prove futile, because they only see Lloyd in the good husband, father, and "provider" role. She realizes this is partly her fault for not being honest with them about his behavior over the years.

Marie thinks back to how she thought Lloyd loved her. He seemed to say and do all the right things to make her feel special. In his way, he did, which also meant he expected her to meet his ideals of perfection. His subtle innuendos made it clear that anything less reflected badly on him. Lord knows she tried to live up to the ideals of the perfect wife and mother. But, no matter how hard she tried, no matter how well she did, she always fell short of meeting his impossible expectations. Lloyd constantly embarrassed and humiliated Marie.

It didn't take long for the bliss of her marriage to fade. She talked to Lloyd about this, suggesting they go to counseling or marriage therapy. He refused.

His lack of respect reminded her of her relationship with her parents. She did her best to create the persona of the perfect couple with a nice home, new cars, and yearly vacations. To anybody looking from the outside, their family appeared picture-perfect.

He thought their marriage needed a child to complete the picture. The thought of raising a daughter made Marie's heart jump with happiness. Maybe a child will make things better, she thought.

Marie made a promise to God. If He gave her a daughter, she promised to honor how precious He made her. She would protect her daughter, nurture her dreams and love her unconditionally. She wanted to spare her the experience of growing up feeling worthless.

But months ago, Marie witnessed her verbally abusive husband do the same thing to their daughter. When she saw how his words affected Elizabeth, she knew something needed to change. It opened Marie's eyes to the emotional cruelty Lloyd had dealt out to her on a regular basis.

She decided to talk to a lawyer to discuss her options.

Marie felt relief knowing her daughter would be away from him. She realized she could use a break too, so she gladly accepted Barb's invitation to stay at her place in Paradise Cove. Barb told her the solitude would help her gain clarity about the direction of her life. Barb was right!

Marie's thoughts come back to the present. She grabs a towel to dry off and wonders, "I really wish I knew the secret to finding everlasting happiness. Why does it always seem just out of reach? Is it possible to keep my promise and pursue my dreams?"

Marie sighs with a glimmer of hope that perhaps one day, she will find answers to those question. She heads downstairs to the kitchen and turns on the coffee maker.

The fresh aroma of coffee fills the kitchen while Marie spreads cream cheese on her warm toasted bagel. She pours a cup of coffee and walks outside to sit on the deck. A flock of seagulls flies overhead to greet her. She watches the birds fly away and then closes her eyes listening intently to the sound of ocean waves. She wishes her troubles could wash away with the waves, leaving her with an opportunity for a fresh, new life.

Her cell phone rings, interrupting her thoughts. She sees her friend's name on the caller I.D.

"Hello, Barb," Marie answers.

"Good morning," Barb replies, "Meet me at Café Joes down by the dock in thirty minutes for a surprise."

"Barb, are you all right?"

"Everything is fine, Marie."

"I thought you and your father left for your annual father-daughter adventure yesterday morning?"

"We did. But I got a brilliant idea. My dad thought we should share it with you. No more questions. I'll see you shortly."

Excitement fills Marie's senses and she wonders what would possibly make them turn the sailboat around. She retreats inside, turns off the coffee maker, refreshes her sunscreen, puts on her walking shoes and heads out the door.

Marie follows the sandy path flanked by sea oats and honeysuckle-covered fences. The fragrant blossoms escort her on her walk until the path meets the main street sidewalk.

The specialty shops along the street fill with the first of the season's tourists. Looking through the windows, she can see their excited faces when they discover a special treasure. Her own excitement grows when she catches sight of Café Joes. Marie feels honored to finally meet Barb's father.

Barb has shared her father's wisdom with her over the years, especially how he filled his dream of entrepreneurship. She has recounted stories about how he started his business twenty-five years ago. How the success of his company provided a good living for seventy-five employees, and enabled him to follow his other passion, sailing.

Over the years, Barb's father created a business environment that encourages his employees to embrace their natural abilities. Barb told Marie he strongly believes following a dream honors one's authentic self.

Barb shared how her parents taught her to embrace her gifts and personality and how this same encouragement instills a burning desire in people, giving them an inner drive to fully engage in discovering their potential, to achieve their heart's desire and live the life they richly deserve.

Barb's father told her since she was a child that she was born unstoppable. He says that when people stop following their dreams, they disconnect from their authentic selves. This can lead to a life of frustration, anxiety and depression leaving one feeling as if something is missing.

Marie never heard those words of encouragement from her parents. She couldn't imagine her parents teaching her to reach for the sky!

Marie crosses the street to the café with pleasant memories of previous visits she enjoyed with Barb and both their daughters.

Marie notices the café looks a little different today. Something about the way the sunlight bathes the row of buildings catches her eye. She takes a seat at an outside table overlooking the Sound. She orders a cup of coffee and sips it slowly while thinking about the first time she met Barb.

Nine years ago, Marie and Lloyd moved to an upscale gated community in their city. He generated a good income at the brokerage firm and decided that with a baby on the way, they needed a bigger home that would reflect his success.

With the move and impending birth of Elizabeth, Lloyd felt things would improve if Marie quit her teaching job. He made plenty of money and decided she didn't need to work.

Marie felt so happy with her baby girl that it distracted her from Lloyd's overbearing nature. Elizabeth turned nine months old when Marie enrolled her in swimming lessons offered at the club house. Barb also signed up her one-year-old daughter, McKenzie, for lessons. She and Barb hit it off and Marie enjoyed having someone to share the ups and downs of motherhood. She no longer felt isolated since Lloyd rarely wanted to hear about her day.

Marie's parents made it clear they did not approve of her relationship with Barb. They believe Barb's influence and grandiose ideas of "following your dreams," filled their daughter's mind with unrealistic expectations. They often blamed Barb for Marie's marriage difficulties and they didn't approve of the growing friendship between their granddaughter and McKenzie.

The clinking sound of chimes from a nearby shop, causes Marie to abandon her thoughts. Her attention shifts to the sun's reflection on the rippling waters and she catches herself smiling at the dancing jewel effect it creates.

She notices a flock of noisy sea gulls escorting a beautiful sailboat entering the inlet. The white sails gleam in the bright sun, giving it an ethereal glow. This must be Barb and her father pulling in, she thinks to herself.

As Barb and the elderly gentleman help tie the boat up to the dock, Marie catches the words "Magical Essence" painted in black lettering on the stern. She watches Barb and her father walk down the dock toward the café.

Barb's frosted, layered blond hair dances loosely in the breeze. The form-fitting blue polo and khaki shorts compliment her athletic body. When Marie waves to her, they both start briskly walking towards each other until they meet and exchange hugs.

Shortly afterwards, the elderly gentleman reaches them.

"Marie, meet my father, captain of the Magical Essence," Barb announces.

"Pleasure to meet you," Marie replies.

"Pleasure to meet you, Marie. Call me Captain T. I bet you're busting at the seams wondering what this is all about."

"You certainly read my mind, Captain T."

"Since Barb came up with this great idea, I'll let her share it over lunch. I'm starving," he says tipping his navy captain's hat forward and revealing a lock of his silver hair. The lanky gentleman smiles at her, and as his deep blue eyes meet hers, it feels as if he can read her soul.

The three of them head to Café Joes and sit at a bistro table. The waitress refreshes Marie's coffee and places a cup in front of Barb and her father. While they wait for lunch, Barb starts the conversation.

"A little voice kept nagging at me to come back and get you. I want you to join us on our trip! When I shared my thoughts with my father, he agreed."

Captain T chimes in, "I taught my children to follow their intuition. Since Barb's was practically screaming at her, we decided to turn the boat around!"

Marie almost drops the coffee cup in her hands. "I hate to intrude on your trip," she responds.

Captain T says, "This is not an intrusion. Believe me, you only turn around a 174-foot yacht headed to the Bahamas for a good reason. You look like good reason to me," he says with a smile. "It would be an honor for you to join us."

"So ... what do you think?" Barb asks.

Captain T senses hesitation in Marie, so he asks her to close her eyes.

He says, "Before you tell us all the reasons you shouldn't, take a deep breath and let it out. Clear all your thoughts and tell me, what is your heart telling you to do? Just listen."

With her eyes shut, Marie replies with a smile forming, "It's telling me to go ... I really want to go. I've always wanted to go to the Bahamas."

She opens her eyes when Barb yells out, "Well, let's go!" and The Captain quickly seconds the motion. He tells Marie to go back to the house, pack a bag and meet them at the boat in an hour.

Marie's feet barely touch the ground as she walks back to the beach house. She quickly gathers some items, texts her daughter about the change in plans and says she'll call her later that evening.

Within minutes, she meets Barb and the Captain in the harbor and boards the Magical Essence. Marie can't contain her excitement when they release the boat from the dock and hoist the sails as they leave the harbor. She experiences an odd feeling that she's about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

Storm of Worthlessness

The wind playfully weaves through Marie's shoulder-length brown hair while she raises her face to greet the warmth of the sun. This almost feels like a dream.

One of the ship's crew brings a pitcher of ice tea and three frosted glasses on a tray with some chips and salsa.

The cool liquid clinks the ice cubes against the glass while the ocean waves lap against the side of the boat. Marie presses the glass to her lips and the refreshing beverage quenches her thirst.

She remarks, "Now I can see why Barb enjoys sailing so much."

As their journey begins, a pair of dolphins appear alongside the boat, jumping in and out of the water, as if to dare the Magical Essence to a race.

Captain T turns to Marie and says, "Enjoying yourself?"

"Oh, yes! Thanks so much for inviting me."

"You're welcome, Marie. I'll leave you two alone while I go do my captain thing. Enjoy the refreshments, but don't get too full. We'll be dining on smoked salmon with fresh grilled vegetables."

"Sounds wonderful," Marie replies.

Marie and Barb enjoy the rest of the afternoon lounging on the deck. Marie can't remember the last time she allowed herself to just relax, be in the moment, and enjoy something as simple as the sun on her back and the breeze caressing her skin.

As the afternoon wears on and the sun begins to descend closer to the horizon, the crew sets up the outdoor dining area for the sumptuous feast.

"The table looks lovely," Marie comments. "And everything looks and smells wonderful. I can't believe how hungry I am."

"Yep, the sea air and sunshine can work up a hearty appetite," Barb replies.

After Marie fills her plate, she tales a bite and says, "Mmmmm, my compliments to the chef," as she savors another bite of fish.

"The salmon practically melts in my mouth. Everything is delicious, " She adds after taking a sip of her drink.

"Glad you enjoyed dinner," the Captain remarks.

The crew begins to clear the plates when Barb says, "Who wants a treat? Sipping margaritas while watching the sunset will be perfect. Is anybody else interested?"

Marie and the Captain say simultaneously, "Margaritas sound great." They look at each other and chuckle.

Barb returns with a pitcher of drinks and three glasses.

They watch the sun slowly lower behind the horizon, painting the sky above in hues of orange and purple. Then evening releases the sun's masterpiece and darkens the set for the night show. One by one the stars make their appearance.

Marie leans back in the lounge chair in awe of the brightness above her. "Wow, look at the sky so full of stars. This wonderful boat, a great dinner, margaritas, and perfect view feels like such a luxury," she says dreamily. "Can you imagine living life like this every day?"

The Captain answers by saying, "Yes Marie, life is meant to be enjoyed. You can live every day like this if you choose. "

"What???" Marie answers with skepticism in her voice.

Captain T continues, "We are all born deserving to live a richly beautiful life. You included."

"Well, I don't know about deserve. It is a nice thought, though," Marie says, but, inside she thinks if he only knew the real me, he wouldn't say that. I'm far from deserving."

She continues the conversation, "I know my daughter, Elizabeth deserves to enjoy this kind of life ... even better, she deserves all her heart's desires."

Marie starts thinking about how Lloyd has given their daughter a luxurious lifestyle. Something she can't provide on a teacher's salary, if she could even find a job.

What Captain T says next jolts her back to reality. "Tell me Marie, why do you think Elizabeth deserves her heart's desires, but not you?"

Def Leppard, Journey and Steve Miller: Older, rawer and 100% banging

Portrait of Ed Masley

Def Leppard, Journey and Steve Miller Band ruled the airwaves of their day with three different approaches to hitting the mainstream where it lived, each one earning a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as quintessential people’s bands for slightly different people.

And those differences were plain as day in downtown Phoenix when their co-headlining Summer Stadium Tour hit Chase Field for an all-star hit parade on Friday, Aug. 23, that presented the acts in order of appearance on the pop charts (if perhaps by sheer coincidence).

It started with Steve Miller Band, a psychedelic blues-rock combo out of San Francisco who started making waves in 1968 with “Living in the U.S.A.” before taking the mainstream by storm with a string of timeless rock hits in the ‘70s after topping the pop charts with “The Joker,” their first of three chart-topping entries on the Hot 100, two of which were brilliant.

Miller’s hit years overlapped a bit with Journey’s, to be fair. And Journey’s second-biggest album, “Frontiers,” hit the streets in 1983, the year Def Leppard stormed our shores as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal boys most likely to succeed with “Photograph,” the first of three Top 40 hits from “Pyromania.”

Not only did the songs get newer as the night progressed, the bands got louder as we made our way from Miller's unassuming old-school rock ‘n’ roll revival moves to the glam-metal stripper-pole anthem that brought the concert to a rousing climax, “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” with Journey as a sort of stepping stone between the two.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

And yet, it all made sense, to an extent, as a nostalgic trip down memory lane for anyone whose tastes were shaped by what rock radio was playing from those early Miller singles to when Journey and Def Leppard had their final mainstream pop hits, back when rock ‘n’ roll was still the people’s music, which it hasn't been in far too long.

Here's a look at all three acts.

Steve Miller still rock'n me, baby, decades after 'The Joker'

Steve Miller got the party started with a hit-filled set that opened on a very trippy note with "Space Intro," the keyboard-driven headphone-music masterstroke that welcomed unsuspecting listeners to "Fly Like an Eagle," Miller's biggest-selling studio release.

From there, he made his way through nearly every song on "Greatest Hits 1974-78," including "Rock'n Me," "The Joker," "Fly Like an Eagle," "Swingtown," "Jungle Love," "Take the Money and Run" and "Jet Airliner."

Miller sounded as good as he looked in his blue dinner jacket and frosty white hair, his phrasing of the lyrics somewhat looser than it was on "Greatest Hits" if no less focused on getting the lyrics across, from "Feed the babies who don't have enough to eat/ Shoe the children with no shoes on their feet/ House the people livin' in the street" to "I really love your peaches/ Wanna shake your tree."

And his guitar work was just as impressive, from the psychedelic majesty of "Serenade" to the gritty post-Chuck Berry approach of "Take the Money and Run." The man remains a criminally underrated lead guitarist. He's got it all — character, phrasing, tone and chops.

He also proved to be a charming presence in his interactions with the crowd, especially when he shared the story of a phone call he received from Eminem, who recently interpolated the Miller hit "Abracadabra" on a song called "Houdini."

His wife took the call.

"Maybe I'm in some kind of beef with Eminem," he recalled thinking. "These young people, they have beef."

His set lasted just over an hour, but could've gone longer, allowing time for — if I may — "Space Cowboy," "Heart Like a Wheel" and "True Fine Love" at the very least. See also: "Wild Mountain Honey" and "Dance, Dance, Dance."

Journey rise above the drama to deliver a hit-filled set

There's so much drama going on in Journey at the moment with founding guitarist Neal Schon publicly feuding with Jonathan Cain, the Babys' keyboardist who joined the fold in 1980 and contributed such Journey classics as "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Faithfully" to the mix, it's amazing that they made it through the set.

Cain recently filed a lawsuit against Schon over the use of Journey's credit card.

Schon responded with a statement this week, as reported by Stereogum , that read, in part, "I am determined to take the high road and push all this aside for the moment to focus on our fans, the tour and all who give so much to make things happen."

Whatever lingering resentment may exist between the two, which one imagines is just north of insurmountable, you never would have guessed there was dissension in the ranks as they made their way through a bevy of classics in Phoenix.

I'm not saying there was anything resembling chemistry between the warring factions, but they handled it like pros. Schon's playing on the songs that were clearly important to Cain was beyond respectful, faithfully recreating the parts he played on the original recordings when it mattered most and never doing anything that really felt like showboating.

He had plenty of other opportunities to flex his chops and he took full advantage of those opportunities, as he should. He's a brilliant guitarist and the only member of the band who's been there all along, through all the changes. I would pay to see him solo with no promise of an actual song.

The other recent drama in the Journey camp has been the recurring reports that their singer, Arnel Pineda, who joined in 2007 after being discovered on YouTube in a Journey cover band, isn't singing the way he was in 2007.

He was far from flawless Friday night in Phoenix. There were times when he was clearly struggling with his pitch, a situation made worse by the technical difficulties that caused him to stop singing, three songs in, on "Stone in Love," which then evolved into a lengthy jam as Pineda tried to figure out what happened.

But Journey recovered because that's who they are. Among the highlights of their set was drummer Deen Castronovo (whose drum fills were fantastic) stepping in on lead vocals on "Lights." And when Pineda was actually firing on all cylinders, which was frankly more often than not? The man was every bit as awe-inspiring as he was 2007, when he made it feel like Journey could perhaps survive without Steve Perry.

He's 17 years older now, but aren't we all?

Def Leppard treat the fans to Rock of Ages

Def Leppard followed Journey with a set that made it clear that we were dealing with the day's first proper heavy metal band, a point made abundantly clear from the opening strains of "Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)," the first of seven songs they played from "Pyromania."

As Joe Elliott told the crowd before following "Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)" with "Rocket," "Tonight, we're gonna celebrate an album that just passed its 40th birthday, 'Pyromania.'"

Before the night was through, they'd made their way through seven songs from "Pyromania," including "Photograph," "Rock of Ages," "Foolin'" and "Too Late for Love."

Their sound was massive, muscular and well-equipped to get you through the fact that Elliott can't always hit the notes he hit in 1983 the way he hit those notes in 1983.

It's just a harsh reality of singing really high on records that define you. When I spoke to Sammy Hagar just the other day about this very thing, he told me he needed to tour on the songs he recorded with Van Halen now because "I painted myself into a corner years ago singing these songs."

And that makes perfect sense. Joe Elliott, now 65, is clearly in if not the same boat then at least the same ocean. To be fair, I haven't heard him sound this good in years when he was on. His performance on "Love Bites," in particular, was stronger than it's been in years. And he remains a charismatic presence.

There were moments in the unplugged portion of the set that played directly to the strengths he now possesses, but the frequent attempts to turn those moments into rousing singalongs rarely generated the response he clearly thought they would, especially on "Two Steps Behind," one of their bigger '90s hits.

Still, they rallied in the end, bringing the set to a crowd-pleasing finish with the Broadway-worthy "Rock of Ages" and the far-from-faded "Photograph" before returning for an encore that ended, as you had to know it would, with "Pour Some Sugar on Me."

His bandmates rocked with the conviction you'd expect throughout, from the two-guitar army of Vivian Campbell and Phil Collen to powerhouse drummer Rick Allen, a true force of nature.

And Elliott proclaiming Campbell, Collen and bassist Rick Savage "three of the greatest voices in rock" may have been more sweet than accurate but the wall of harmonies they recreated on Def Leppard's greatest hits played a huge role in bringing those records to life in concert.

By the time Def Leppard brought the concert to a close with "Pour Some Sugar on Me," we'd heard 28 Top 40 hits spanning two decades, from "The Joker" through "Don't Stop Believin'" to "Two Steps Behind." It was the "Rock of Ages" Elliott promised, still rollin', rock 'n' rollin'.

The Journey

By mary oliver.

Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice— though the whole house began to tremble and you felt the old tug at your ankles. "Mend my life!" each voice cried. But you didn't stop. You knew what you had to do, though the wind pried with its stiff fingers at the very foundations, though their melancholy was terrible. It was already late enough, and a wild night, and the road full of fallen branches and stones. But little by little, as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds, and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own, that kept you company as you strode deeper and deeper into the world, determined to do the only thing you could do— determined to save the only life you could save.

The Possible Reason Some Americans Refer To Soda As 'Pop'

a glass of carbonated beverage

What's that you say? You'd like a can of pop? Asking for one in some parts of the U.S. might yield some odd looks. Try saying 'soda' instead, because what you call that bubbly beverage is based on geography, and how the fizzy origins of soda unfolded there. Several theories on the genesis of 'pop' exist, but they all seem to suggest it represents the sound made when pressurized gases escape upon opening a bottle. But, 'pop' may have arisen from "pop goes the cork," as written in 1812 by English poet Robert Southey in a letter.

It's not commonly understood why the term pop became popular in the Midwest and Northwest — though Chicago magazine opined in 2023 that pop's linguistic growth is owed to a Detroit bottling company. In 1907, Russian immigrant bakers Ben and Perry Feigenson started using frosting to flavor carbonated water and selling it from the back of a horse-drawn wagon. The drinks became so popular, the brothers built a bottling plant in Detroit. Now known as Faygo, it was only sold in Michigan until the 1950s. In the history of the soda, um, pop company, "The Faygo Book" author Joe Grimm says the company insisted people call their beverage 'pop.'

Other effervescent monikers

glass soda pop bottle with lid popping off

While the word pop may be from the sound of old fashioned glass bottle lids popping off, etymologists are not in agreement about how carbonated drinks became known as 'soda.' Some say the word originated from the Italian sida or Medieval Latin soda referring to the saltwort plant from which an alkaline substance once used in soap making was derived. Others suggest the word is a shortened version of sodium, a basic ingredient in carbonated drinks.

Whichever is true, the fact is that before bottling techniques were perfected to protect the carbon dioxide from fizzling out, people in the Northeast were introduced to soda water (later shortened to soda) primarily at soda fountains — not in bottles. The first such fountain was introduced in 1811 by Yale chemistry professor Benjamin Silliman in New Haven, Connecticut. Though we all know there's no real difference between soda and pop , outside the Northeast, most folks in Florida, California, and in some areas of the Midwest near Milwaukee and St. Louis also refer to the drink as soda.

The historical journey of carbonated beverages

Cola being poured into a glass with a straw from a red can

It's well-documented that Midwesterners are more apt to say 'pop' — while Northeastern denizens of the United States are more likely to say 'soda.' Southerners? 'Coke.' It is pretty well-accepted that southerners refer to all fizzy drinks as 'coke' because the formula for Coca-Cola was invented by a pharmaceutical chemist — Dr. John Stith Pemberton — in Atlanta in 1886. Among the oldest sodas still on the market , the first Coca-Cola bottling plant began operating in 1899 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The presence of a small amount of cocaine in the original recipe for the cola is why some small pockets of the deep south might still refer to it as 'dope.'

According to Britannica , carbonated beverages being referred to as 'soft drinks' was a way to make a distinction between non-alcoholic brews and alcoholic ones. Soft drinks were suggested as substitutes for beer, whisky, and other distilled or fermented drinks. And though its use is fading in eastern Massachusetts, primarily Boston, an older generation might still refer to that effervescent potion as tonic.

the journey of me

"Journey of the Magi" is a poem by T.S. Eliot, first published in 1927 in a series of pamphlets related to Christmas. The poem was written shortly after Eliot's conversion to the Anglican faith. Accordingly, though the poem is an allegorical dramatic monologue that inhabits the voice of one the magi (the three wise men who visit the infant Jesus), it's also generally considered to be a deeply personal poem. Indeed, the magus in the poem shares Eliot's view that spiritual transformation is not a comfort, but an ongoing process—an arduous journey seemingly without end. The magus's view on the birth of Jesus—and the shift from the old ways to Christianity—is complex and ambivalent.

How Danny Jansen made MLB history in Boston Red Sox vs Toronto Blue Jays game Monday

Portrait of Jeremy Cluff

There's a first time for everything.

Including a Major League Baseball player playing for both teams in the same game. Danny Jansen made MLB history Monday by doing just that.

How is that possible?

On June 26, Jansen started at catcher for the Toronto Blue Jays in a game against the Boston Red Sox , a game that was called in the second inning because of weather.

Then, on July 27, Jansen was traded from the Blue Jays to the Red Sox.

On Monday, Jansen started at catcher for the Red Sox in the resumption of that June 26 game at Fenway Park. He went 1-for-4 in the Blue Jays' 4-1 win.

The Red Sox and Blue Jays played a doubleheader Monday, with the first game being the completion of the June 26 game. It began in the top of the second inning with the score tied, 0-0.

MLB Playoffs standings: Who leads division, wild-card races for 2024 MLB postseason?

The Blue Jays also won the second game of the doubleheader, 7-3.

"Definitely grateful," Jansen told reporters about the opportunity to make MLB history by being the first player to play for both teams in an MLB game, via ESPN . "Honestly, when I heard about it, I didn't think I would be the first. The game has been around for so long. It's one of those oddities that happen in this sport. It's extremely rare and cool."

Reese McGuire started the June 26 game for Boston at catcher, but was designated for assignment after the Red Sox traded for Jansen.

"It's going to be nuts," Jansen told The Athletic .

"I didn't know (much about this) at first," he continued. "I was like, ‘What, am I going to have to go on the other team?' I didn't know what was going to happen. It just kind of caught me off guard about the whole situation. Because when I got traded, it was just a whirlwind at first and I didn't think about it.

"But then once that stuff settled, I heard about (the suspended game scenario). And I was like, ‘Oh, that's cool. That's a unique thing that's going to happen.'"

Yes, being the only player in MLB history to play in a single game for both teams qualifies as "unique."
