Touchstone and Beyond: A History of Disney’s “The Hundred-Foot Journey”

Can Helen Mirren break from tradition and nurture talent in the kitchen, even if that talent comes from a competing restaurant? That’s the plot for The Hundred-Foot Journey.

the hundred foot journey budget

Hassan and his family, including his Papa, leave Mumbai and find a new life in Europe. After getting stuck in a small French town, Papa sees the future in a rundown forgotten restaurant. Encouraged, Papa buys the land even though only one hundred feet across the street is a well-known and Michelin-starred restaurant that is run by Madame Mallory.

Papa presses on, and while Madame Mallory and he battle at wits with small-time shenanigans over supremacy of the culinary kind, Hassan continues his food journey. Working with Marguerite from Madame Mallory’s, Hassan learns to infuse Indian spices with traditional French cooking faire.

The result is spectacular. Forging a bond with Madame Mallory, Hassan excels in the kitchen, and soon thanks to his skill, Madame Mallory’s earns another Michelin star. Success brings fame, and Hassan is swept up in the instant stardom of the food world. Traveling to Paris, Hassan’s abilities only grow, and his cooking talent become the talk of the tables of Paris.

For all the moments of fame and success, Hassan misses his home in the small French town, and he misses Marguerite. Soon the budding superstar chef must decide where he wants to be. At the high-end parties in Paris, or in the small town he left behind.

High Praise

The movie is a delight — a feast for the eyes and ears. From the mythical world of the family’s restaurant in Mumbai, to the joy of Marguerite and Hassan picking wild mushrooms in the French countryside, everything about the film is served well done and sure to delight the audience.

I like Hassan, and the fact that his conflict with his father is not burnt to a crisp (pun intended) with family drama. Papa and Hassan disagree on many things, but they love each other and learn to back off from one another’s life.

Helen Mirren is simply perfect in every way possible.

What Were They Thinking?

The story is thin in substance, and predictable in every way. Once Hassan leaves for Paris, everyone knows he must come back home, and that he will certainly be back soon.

Naturally, Papa and Madame Mallory would have a relationship. It was forecasted from a mile away.

Backlot Knowledge

  • Helen Mirren was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work in the film.
  • Lasse Hallstrom was nominated for an award at the Locarno International Film Festival.
  • Hallstrom won the Audience Award and the Truly Moving Picture Award from the Norwegian International Film Festival and Heartland Film Festival respectively.
  • Om Puri reportedly was also called Papa by the cast. He even took that fatherly role to heart by moving out of the hotel they stayed in for a place with a better kitchen so that he could cook for everyone.
  • Though it may look real on screen, the two restaurants at the center of the battle for culinary supremacy were digitally created.
  • Hassan’s family name is Kadam which translates to step in English which has a nice mirror to the plot of the movie.
  • The movie is based on Richard C. Morais’ 2010 novel of the same name.
  • Oprah reportedly loved the book and sought to adapt it to the big screen.
  • Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon spent time observing in kitchens prior to production.
  • The movie grossed over $10 million on its opening weekend and landed in the fourth spot at the box office.

Critical Response

{ Snub -Skip this Film, Overexposed -Desperate for Something to Watch, Clapper -A Perfect Film For Any Device, Magic Hour – You Must Watch This Film on a Big Screen, Award Worthy- This Film is Cinema.}

Movies are meant to be enjoyable and entertaining. There is a certain uniqueness to The Hundred-Foot Journey  that few films have. The movie simmers like a well-prepared feast, with talent and love from the actors that infuse a healthy does of reality and silliness in this culinary fairytale.

There is not much in the recipe that is complicated or deep in detail with the film. The Hundred- Foot Journey  is a perfect movie to not be taken seriously, and one that will entertain your visual tastebuds for a joyful time. It’s not award worthy, but The Hundred-Foot Journey gets the Clapper Award for being the perfect film for any device.

Best Quotable Line

When Papa was negotiating the purchase of the restaurant it was intimated that he was poor because he looked for a discount. His response is hilarious.

“Madame, asking for discount doesn’t mean I’m poor, it means I’m thrifty.”

The Hundred-Foot Journey

the hundred foot journey budget

“The Hundred-Foot Journey” is a film that demands that you take it seriously. With its feel-good themes of multicultural understanding, it is about Something Important. It even comes with the stamp of approval from titanic tastemakers Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg , who both serve as producers. What more convincing could you possibly need?

There’s something familiar about the treacly and sanctimonious way this film is being packaged. It reeks of late-‘90s/early ‘00s Miramax fare: films with tasteful yet ubiquitous ad campaigns and unabashed Oscar aspirations which suggested that seeing them (and, more importantly, voting for them) would make you a better person. Films like “The Cider House Rules,” “Chocolat” and “The Shipping News.” Films by Swedish director Lasse Hallstrom.

Hallstrom just happens to be the director here, as well, and the similarities to “Chocolat” are inescapable. Stop me if think you’ve heard this one before: A family moves into a quaint but closed-minded French village and shakes things up with an enticing array of culinary delicacies. This new enterprise happens to sit across the street from a conservative and revered building that’s a town treasure. But the food in question isn’t a bon bon this time—rather, the movie is the bon bon itself.

But despite being handsomely crafted, well acted and even sufficiently enjoyable, “The Hundred-Foot Journey” is also conventional and predictable. And for a film that’s all about opening up your senses and sampling spicy, exotic tastes, this comic drama is entirely too safe and even a little bland.

What livens things up, though, is the interplay between Helen Mirren and Om Puri as battling restaurant owners operating across the street from each other—100 feet away from each other, to be exact, a short but fraught trip that various characters take for various reasons. Watching these veteran actors stoop to sabotage each other provides a consistent source of laughs. She’s all sharp angles, piercing looks and biting quips; he’s all round joviality, boisterous blasts and warmhearted optimism. The contrast between the British Oscar-winner and the Indian acting legend offers the only tension in this otherwise soft and gooey dish—that is, until the film goes all soft and gooey, too.

Mirren stars as Madame Mallory, owner of Le Saule Pleurer (The Weeping Willow), an elegant and expensive French restaurant that’s the winner of a prestigious Michelin star. But one star isn’t enough for the coldly driven Mme. Mallory—she wants another, and then another.

But her bloodless quest for gourmet grandeur is interrupted by the arrival across the street of an Indian family: the Kadams, who’ve been wandering around Europe ever since their beloved restaurant back home burned down during political rioting. When the brakes on their car malfunction on a treacherous stretch of spectacular countryside, Papa (Puri) insists it’s a sign from his late wife and decides to open a new eatery in the charming town at the bottom of the hill.

Never mind that one of the most celebrated restaurants in all of France is sitting right across the street from the empty building he rents. Never mind that they are in an insular part of the country where the residents probably don’t even know what Indian cuisine is, much less like it, as his children point out. He has faith in his food—and in his son, Hassan ( Manish Dayal ), a brilliant, young chef.

Just as Papa and Mme. Mallory strike up a sparky rivalry, Hassan enjoys a flirtatious relationship with French sous chef Marguerite ( Charlotte Le Bon , who played an early model and muse in the recent “Yves Saint Laurent” biopic). The script from Steven Wright (who also wrote the far trickier “ Locke ” from earlier this year, as well as “ Dirty Pretty Things ” and “ Eastern Promises ”) is full of such tidy parallels, as well as trite and overly simplistic proclamations about how food inspires memories. Dayal and Le Bon do look lovely together, though, and share a light, enjoyable chemistry.

Then again, it all looks lovely—both the French and Indian dishes as well as the lush, rolling surroundings, which we see through all four seasons; the work of cinematographer Linus Sandgren , who recently shot “American Hustle.” This sweetly pleasing combination of ingredients would have been perfectly suitable if the film didn’t take a wild and needless detour in the third act. That’s when it becomes an even less interesting movie than it already was, in spite of its loftier aspirations.

'The Hundred-Foot Journey': Film Review

With its picture-postcard setting and mouthwatering Indian and French delicacies, The Hundred-Foot Journey is a movie designed to comfort. Stimulating taste buds and little else, Lasse Hallstrom ’s latest film picks up where his 2000 hit Chocolat left off, in terms of the affectionate shaming of provincial Gallic villagers. Starring Helen Mirren and  Om Puri as rival restaurateurs in the Midi-Pyrenees region of France, the film tracks a tension-free lesson in cultural exchange that culminates, predictably, in romance. Fans of the source best-seller and seekers of non-challenging counterprogramming to summer’s genre fare will savor the offering. But colorful locales and exotic spices can’t hide its essential blandness.

The Bottom Line Chicken tikka masala for the soul.

The comic drama follows a Mumbai family’s move to France, where a conveniently available run-down mansion/restaurant gives them the chance to resurrect the business they lost back home in devastating circumstances. Papa (Puri), a father of five and an unstoppable force who still communes with his deceased wife, soon butts heads with Mirren’s Madame Mallory, who runs the elegant eatery directly across the road. Hers is a bastion of classical French cuisine and the proud bearer of a Michelin star. Madame wants a second one. She’s so downright spiteful that the eventual melting of her heart is a given.

The thawing begins halfway through the movie, with an act of xenophobic violence against the Indian family that proves only a minor blip for the characters, even for Papa’s injured son Hassan ( Manish Dayal ). A gifted cook who’s fascinated with French culinary tradition, he falls for Marguerite ( Charlotte Le Bon ), Madame’s sous-chef, as they explore the bounty of the farmers’ market and the local terrain. Their story’s trajectory is as unsurprising as most everything else in the fairy-tale-tinged film, but Le Bon brings a nice touch of passive-aggressive competitiveness to her role when Hassan’s career takes off.

Screenwriter Steven Knight ’s adaptation of the foodie-friendly novel by Richard C. Morais resolves conflicts quickly and places morsels of platitude about the “flavors of life” in characters’ mouths. For anyone who didn’t see Ratatouille , there are helpful reminders that “food is memories.”

LIST The Hollywood Reporter’s Top 25 Power Lunch Spots of 2014

But the main course is the dance between Madame Mallory and Papa, however transparent the clash between her carefully composed plates and his bold flavors. Whether they’re filing ridiculous complaints about each other with the unflappable mayor ( Michel Blanc ), arguing over the proper presentation of ingredients or sharing a cafe table, Mirren and Puri bring an effortless command to their roles.

From the official site: In “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), gets wind of it. Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own escalate to all out war between the two establishments – until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine and for Mme. Mallory’s enchanting sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), combine with his mysteriously delicious talent to weave magic between their two cultures and imbue Saint-Antonin with the flavors of life that even Mme. Mallory cannot ignore. At first Mme. Mallory's culinary rival, she eventually recognizes Hassan's gift as a chef and takes him under her wing. [1]

“The Hundred-Foot Journey” abounds with flavors that burst across the tongue. A stimulating triumph over exile, blossoming with passion and heart, with marjoram and madras, it is a portrayal of two worlds colliding and one boy’s drive to find the comfort of home, in every pot, wherever he may be. The Hundred-Foot Journey (film)

2014 film by Lasse Hallström From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hundred-Foot Journey is a 2014 American comedy-drama film directed by Lasse Hallström from a screenplay written by Steven Knight , adapted from Richard C. Morais ' 2010 novel of the same name . [lower-alpha 2] It stars Helen Mirren , Om Puri , Manish Dayal , and Charlotte Le Bon , and is about a battle in a French village between two restaurants that are directly across the street from each other: a new Indian restaurant owned by an Indian emigrant family and an established French restaurant with a Michelin star owned by a French woman.

Produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey for DreamWorks Pictures through their respective production companies, Amblin Entertainment and Harpo Films (first relaunch film), in association with Participant Media and Reliance Entertainment , the film was released by Touchstone Pictures on August 8, 2014, [7] and grossed $89.5 million at the worldwide box office.

The Muslim Konkani Kadam family runs a restaurant in Mumbai . As a child, the second-oldest son, Hassan, would shop with his mother at the market, where he was adept at picking the highest-quality food. Now a young man, he is in training to replace her as the restaurant's main cook. When a mob attacks and burns down the restaurant after a disputed election, his mother dies in the fire. Seeking asylum in Europe, the Kadams first settle in London , but they dislike the climate and their house, which is right next to Heathrow , so they depart for mainland Europe .

Near St. Antonin in the Midi-Pyrénées in France , the brakes on the Kadams' van fail. Marguerite, a local woman, passes by and helps tow the van to town. She invites the family into her apartment while they deal with the auto repair shop and arrange lodgings for the night, and she treats them to a tray of delicious food she made using fresh, local ingredients.

The next morning, Hassan follows his father, Abbu, to an abandoned property they passed the night before. A restaurant had been there, but it failed because Le Saule Pleureur ("The Weeping Willow"), an upscale French restaurant with a Michelin star , is located just across the street, a hundred feet [lower-alpha 3] away. Abbu buys the land anyway, as he is confident the Indian food Hassan will cook for their restaurant will attract customers.

Naming their restaurant Maison Mumbai, the Kadam family renovates the property. One day, Madame Mallory, the proprietor of Saule Pleureur, visits and asks to see their menu. Abbu hesitates, but Hassan gladly gives it to her, in case, she wishes to dine with them sometime. When she buys all of the ingredients the Kadams need from the local market on the day of their grand opening, a war of sabotage and complaints to the mayor of the village erupts between Abbu and Mallory. While this goes on, Hassan asks Marguerite, a sous chef at Le Saule Pleureur, to help him learn about French cooking, and they develop feelings for each other.

The war between the restaurants peaks on Bastille Day , when one of Mallory's chefs, Jean-Pierre, and two others spray-paint "La France aux Français" ("France to the French") on the outer wall of Maison Mumbai and firebomb the covered outdoor eating area. Hassan catches them in the act and scares them off, but his hands get burned.

Mallory, deducing who is responsible, dismisses Jean-Pierre and personally scrubs the graffiti off the wall. While she is cleaning, Hassan offers to make her an omelette, which is how Marguerite said Mallory interviews potential chefs. As his hands are bandaged, Hassan instructs Mallory how to make the omelette his way, which uses unusual spices and ingredients.

Madame is so impressed by the result that she invites him to work at Le Saule Pleureur so that he can get more classically French cuisine training to supplement his natural abilities. Abbu is initially against the move but ultimately allows Hassan to go.

Marguerite accuses Hassan of using her to help him get his new position, and they compete for Mallory's approval in the kitchen. Hassan outshines Marguerite, and his cooking, which evolves into a unique French-Indian fusion, results in Saule Pleureur receiving a second Michelin star.

The award gets him national attention, and he accepts a job at a fancy Parisian molecular cuisine restaurant. While he is gone, Abbu and Mallory begin seeing each other socially.

In Paris, Hassan's style quickly draws attention, and there is speculation that he may bring his new restaurant a third Michelin star. Over time, however, he becomes increasingly lonely and distracted by thoughts of his family and Marguerite.

One night, after the Parisian restaurant is closed, Hassan smells the Indian food that one of his sous chefs has brought from home. The sous chef invites Hassan to join him, and Hassan is brought to tears by the memories the food unlocks.

Soon after, Hassan takes a train back to St. Antonin and goes directly to Marguerite's home. He tells her that he has a business proposition for her, and asks her to help him cook a dish he has not made for a long time. They prepare it in the kitchen of Le Saule Pleureur, and, when the Kadams and some special guests arrive for dinner, everyone is surprised to see Hassan. Madame Mallory announces she is giving him control of her restaurant, and he announces that he is moving back to the village to run it with Marguerite.

Hassan's phone rings, but he does not answer the call that will reveal whether the restaurant in Paris received a third Michelin star under his time as Chef de Cuisine , saying he will earn a third star with his friends and family. The group carries their meal across the road to eat at Maison Mumbai.

Prior to filming, actors Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon spent a considerable amount of time going to restaurants and observing and learning in kitchens. [8] To create the food featured in the film, producer Juliet Blake consulted Indian-born chef Floyd Cardoz , who practiced "fusing together two cultures through cooking." [8]

Principal photography for the film began on September 23, 2013, [9] in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val , [10] [11] and there was extensive filming at scenic locales in Midi-Pyrénées . [12] It was additionally shot in the village of Carlus . [13] Some scenes were shot in the Cité du Cinéma studio complex, located in Saint-Denis , north of Paris . [14] After nine weeks of shooting in France, the production moved to The Netherlands . [15]

To make Indian actress Juhi Chawla , who plays the wife of Om Puri 's character at the start of the film, look 15 years older than her actual age, the filmmakers aged her digitally in post-production using techniques such as visual refactoring. [16]

A.R. Rahman composed the music for the film. [17] Hollywood Records released a soundtrack on August 12, 2014. [18]

The first trailer for the film was released on May 13, 2014. [7] Its New York premiere was held at the Ziegfeld Theatre on August 4, 2014, [19] and it was released in the United States on August 8. [7] Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributed The Hundred-Foot Journey globally through its Touchstone Pictures label, except for territories in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa , where rights were sold by Mister Smith Entertainment to independent distributors. [4] Reliance Entertainment distributed the film in India . [20] In France , the film was released as Les recettes du bonheur ( Recipes for Happiness ).

The film was released by Touchstone Home Entertainment on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on December 2, 2014.

The Hundred-Foot Journey grossed $10,979,290 in the U.S. on its opening weekend, finishing in 4th place at the box office. It went on to earn $54,240,821 in the U.S. and $35,273,632 internationally for a worldwide box office total of $89,514,453. [6]

Critical response

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes , the film has an approval rating of 68% based on reviews from 148 critics, with an average score of 6.2/10; the site's critics consensus reads "Director Lasse Hallström does lovely work and Helen Mirren is always worth watching, but The Hundred-Foot Journey travels predictable ground already covered by countless feel-good dramedies." [21] On Metacritic , the film has a weighted average score of 55 out of 100 based on reviews from 36 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". [22] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale. [23]

The Wrap 's Alonso Duralde called the film "a surprisingly bland slumgullion of food porn and emotional manipulation, filtered through the middlebrow sensibilities of director Lasse Hallström." [24] Variety ' s Justin Chang called it "the most soothing brand of cinematic comfort food." [25] Edwin Arnaudin of the Asheville Citizen-Times gave the film a "B-plus". [26]

NPR 's film critic Kenneth Turan said the film was entertaining while criticizing the predictability of the story and "wish[ing] that the film had more of the messy juices of life flowing through its veins". [27]

For her performance in the film, Helen Mirren was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical . [28]

The Hundred-Foot Journey

By Brent Simon 2014-07-31T02:26:00+01:00

Dir: Lasse Hallström. US. 2014. 122mins

The Hundred-Foot Journey

For a film that spends a lot of time extolling the virtues of spiciness, The Hundred-Foot Journey certainly goes down with the gentle, familiar agreeableness of a bland, box-top recipe — it’s casual dining comfort food disguised as exotic cuisine. A pleasant but ultimately forgettable adaptation of Richard C. Morais’ French-set, culture-clash novel of the same name, about the owners of a pair of restaurants locked in competition, director Lasse Hallström’s bauble will find purchase most readily with gastrophiles and lovers of undemanding dramedies that serve up colorfully dressed yet pat affirmations.

Linus Sandgren’s gorgeous cinematography and composer A.R. Rahman’s lively score go a long way toward holding an audience’s attention, but it’s veterans Mirren and Puri who give The Hundred-Foot Journey most of its lift.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was a huge hit with mostly older viewers for distributor Fox Searchlight last year, grossing nearly two-thirds of its $137 million haul (against a mere $10 million budget) internationally. The Hundred-Foot Journey will be seeking to tap into the same pensioners demographic, and should have enough counter-programming punch and warm word-of-mouth to dutifully hang around the Stateside box office for a couple weeks, and also deliver an even stronger overseas performance (though one wonders if a title change will be necessary, given its moniker of measurement).

After suffering a family loss back in India, twenty-something Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) and his fellow displaced siblings find themselves searching for a sense of rootedness with their patriarch, Papa (Om Puri), when an automobile failure strands them in a small town in the south of France. They’re assisted by a local villager, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), and Papa makes the decision that this is the perfect place to settle down and open an Indian eatery — no matter the demographic.

They buy and fix up a rundown property, but when the Kadams open Maison Mumbai it immediately puts them at odds with Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), the stern and territorial proprietor of a Michelin-rated restaurant across the street. When ugly racial tensions flare up, however, Madame Mallory is the first to squash them and, recognizing Hassan’s culinary talents, she gives him an opportunity that helps send him on his way.

Hallström is at his best when his films are shot through with either a completely swollen sense of romanticism or some element of danger or mystery — qualities that are sorely lacking in The Hundred-Foot Journey , which is visually lush and all-around professionally mounted but dramatically inert. From its opening narration and attendant just-so pauses and poses that underscore its manipulated poignance, Steven Knight’s adaptation feels like it’s always working its way down a checklist. Is there a tragic past? Check. A handsome protagonist with considerable pluck? Check. Exquisite scenery with sun-soaked lens flares? Check.

The problem is The Hundred-Foot Journey doesn’t sell any sort of absorbing cultural fusion; it tells viewers about Hassan’s talent and imagination rather than convincingly show them. (The default silver bullet, distilled for Anglo audiences, seems to be merely “Add some spice.”) Full of narrative head feints, the movie feels averse to too much friction, or anything approaching real-life conflict; a bit mutual sabotage by way of ingredient buyouts at the local market is quickly tamped down, and later a briefly ignited resentment and quasi-competition between Hassan and Marguerite is summarily discarded.

At its core, this adaptation takes too long to get to the portion of its story that is most interesting. It’s 80 minutes in before the detente between Madame Mallory and the Kadams allows for Hassan to go work in her restaurant, and not until the 95-minute mark that a celebrated Hassan leaves to make good in Paris. That renders his inevitable return an unsatisfying mad dash. This might work if The Hundred-Foot Journey was richer in supporting characters, but the roster of multi-dimensional figures here goes arguably only three-deep; all of Hassan’s siblings are virtual non-entities.

Linus Sandgren’s gorgeous cinematography and composer A.R. Rahman’s lively score go a long way toward holding an audience’s attention, but it’s veterans Mirren and Puri who give The Hundred-Foot Journey most of its lift. They inhabit their characters’ innate stubbornness and occasional grumpiness with an effortless grace; their dreams are sketched in their obdurate nature.

Unfortunately, the movie doesn’t invest in sketching out a believably conflicted inner life for Hassan, which leaves Dayal little to do other than act earnest. He does that dutifully, and quite well, but this Journey is an overly familiar one.

Home is wherever your family is. The film also stresses the importance of accepting differences in other people, including cultures and cuisines. Love of family and cooking are prominent themes.

Positive Role Models

Hassan is briefly seduced by fame and fortune, but he eventually realizes that family is more important. A snobby woman learns that she should be more open to accepting people who have different customs.

Parents need to know that Lasse Hallstrom 's The Hundred-Food Journey follows the journey of Hassan (Manish Dayal), a young and extremely talented chef, and his/his family's culture clash with rival restaurateur Madame Mallory ( Helen Mirren ). The many mouth-watering food scenes are often accompanied by wine, and there are some scenes in which one character starts to drink a bit more heavily (to suggest depression). Two brief moments feature some violence (including one in which men throw fire bombs) -- one of which causes a sad death. There are also a few romantic kisses and suggestions of intimacy and language along the lines of "bloody." Absolutely fantastic!

Excellent clean movie, what's the story.

After unrest drives them away from their native India to London, Hassan (Manish Dayal) and his family take to the road and find themselves stranded when their brakes fail in a small French town. Hassan's father decides it's just the spot to open an Indian restaurant. Directly across the street, Madame Mallory ( Helen Mirren ) runs another restaurant, one with a long, proud tradition of fine French dining -- and possessed of a famed Michelin star. She's not happy with her new neighbors and declares war on their rival eatery. Meanwhile, Hassan starts to fall for Marguerite, the sous chef in Mallory's kitchen, who teaches him the basics of French cuisine.

Is It Any Good?

Like beef bourguignon, one of the many dishes filmed so delectably in this production, THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY is a crowd-pleasing classic. The family story, told with empathy and love here, is its base; the food scenes that are odes to the art of cooking, framed through a cross-cultural prism, are its mea; and the gorgeous French countryside and melodic Indian music are its garnish. It's a delight to watch, especially because of the cast.

But, also just like beef bourguignon, it's not particularly inventive, even if the story centers around a young man's ingenuity in the kitchen. You know what you're getting. A true master chef -- as director Lasse Hallstrom has revealed himself to be in many previous turns at the helm -- would take a classic and turn it into something transcendent, adding elements that transform, rather than just substituting one ingredient (the location, perhaps) for another and hoping it feels different. Still, the film is big-hearted and filling enough -- so filling that it runs too long, actually -- to be a pleasant enough cinematic meal.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about bias. What does Madame Mallory think about Hassan and his family when she first meets them? Why? How do her opinions change?

Why are movies about food and cooking so appealing? How does this one compare to others you've seen?

The Hundred-Foot Journey

The Hundred-Foot Journey

  • The Kadam family leaves India for France where they open a restaurant directly across the road from Madame Mallory's Michelin-starred eatery.
  • The family of talented cook, Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal), has a life filled with both culinary delights and profound loss. Drifting through Europe after fleeing political violence in India that killed the family restaurant business and their mother, the Kadams arrive in France. Once there, a chance auto accident and the kindness of a young woman, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), in the village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val inspires Papa Kadam (Om Puri) to set up a Indian restaurant there. Unfortunately, this puts the Kadams in direct competition with the snobbish Madame Mallory's acclaimed haute cuisine establishment across the street where Marguerite also works as a sous-chef. The resulting rivalry eventually escalates in personal intensity until it goes too far. In response, there is a bridging of sides initiated by Hassan, Marguerite, and Madame Mallory (Dame Helen Mirren), both professional and personal, that encourages an understanding that will change both sides forever. — Kenneth Chisholm ([email protected])
  • The Kadam family after leaving India due to a fatal tragedy finally settle in a small town in southern France. They set up a traditional family run Indian restaurant just like they had always planned but opposite a competitive French restaurant. This initial rivalry creates unexpected twists for the better and for the worse in the lives of both the Kadam family and Madame Mallory (Dame Helen Mirren), the owner of the Michelin star restaurant a hundred feet away. — Viir khubchandani
  • Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal), the oldest of five siblings, was taught how to cook, but more importantly truly taste and love food, by his mother. Their entire family works together in their open air eatery in Mumbai. In his role, Hassan considers himself a cook and not a chef as he was never professionally trained. Following the tragic death of Hassan's mother, his well-off but frugal Papa Kadam (Om Puri) decides to pack up the family and move to Europe to open a restaurant, the business to keep to his wife's memory in their love of South Asian cuisine. After an initial business misstep in London, Papa believes it is fate that their van breaks down just outside of the French town of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, that they meet a local foodie, a young woman named Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), who introduces them to the abundance of fresh locally sourced produce, seafood and meats, and that there is an abandoned restaurant property on the outskirts of town for sale. Against the wishes of the family, Papa decides to purchase the property for their business, even after learning that the previous owners could not make a go of it because it is a mere one hundred feet from Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin-starred restaurant where Marguerite works as a sous-chef, she trying to work her way up to chef-de-cuisine. Papa's resolve is strengthened as he believes their style of food is not only different than the French, but better in their bold flavors, something he wants to show the locals. Madame Mallory (Dame Helen Mirren), Le Saule Pleureur's proprietress, took over its running following the death of her husband. The restaurant is now her entire life, and she has waited close to thirty years for it to receive its second Michelin-star, so far without success. Madame Mallory does not take too kindly to her new neighbors, not only as potential competition, but in the Kadams', most specifically Papa's, brash and forward approach to life, unlike the refined French. An initial action by Madame Mallory to make sure Maison Mumbai, the Kadams' restaurant, doesn't succeed, leads to an all out war between her and Papa. But a potential bridge emerges between the two restaurants with the budding friendship and possible romance between Hassan and Marguerite. Beyond that friendship and romance, Hassan believes, to survive, they have to meld their bold flavors to local ingredients and techniques, he who wants to learn the art of French cooking from Marguerite. A singular action in that war results in what could be a fundamental shift between all the players at Le Saule Pleureur and Maison Mumbai. — Huggo
  • Put young Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) in a kitchen, and he's bound to emerge with a dish that will dazzle. When Hassan's family is forced to move from their native India, his Papa (Om Puri) relocates to a peaceful hamlet in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Determined to give his new neighbors a little taste of home, Papa decides to open an Indian restaurant in the village, and names it "Maison Mumbai". Meanwhile, across the street at the traditional French restaurant Le Saule Pleureu, uptight proprietor Madame Mallory (Dame Helen Mirren) doesn't exactly welcome the competition. When Madame Mallory ignites a bitter feud that quickly escalates, the only hope for a peaceful resolution lies in Hassan's talent for French haute cuisine, and his growing affections for Madame Mallory's pretty young sous chef Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon). Subsequently impressed by Hassan's undeniable culinary talents, Madame Mallory agrees to become Hassan's mentor, in the process providing the perfect creative environment where his unique fusion cuisine can thrive.
  • The Kadam family runs a restaurant in Mumbai. The second-oldest son, Hassan (Manish Dayal), was being groomed to replace his mother Ammi (Juhi Chawla) as the restaurant's main cook. However, a mob attacks and firebombs the restaurant after election related riots which are targeted against Muslim establishments. Papa Kadam (Om Puri) and his family evacuate the guests, but Ammi is killed. The oldest son Mansur (Amit Shah) and his sister Mahira (Farzana Dua Elahe) also escape. Seeking asylum in Europe, the family first settles in London, where their residence proves ill-suited for a restaurant as it was on the approach path for airplanes landing at Heathrow and very noisy. Hassan continues to teach himself on cooking skills with European meats. Hassan believes that London vegetables have no soul. They depart for mainland Europe. Shortly after entering France, the brakes on Papa's van fail near Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the Midi-Pyrenees. Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), a sous chef at an upscale French restaurant named "Le Saule Pleureur" ("The Weeping Willow"), passes by and offers to help the Kadams find an auto repair shop (to get the van fixed) and a guest house. She brings the Kadams to her apartment and treats them to cold food. Papa is amazed at the quality of the food in the village and its availability and discovers that Marguerite made the food herself. Papa learns of an abandoned restaurant building available for purchase in the town. It's located directly across the street--only 100 feet-from another restaurant called Le Saule Pleureur. The abandoned restaurant has space for 50 tables, has a covered yard and space for a Tandoori oven. The family is against buying the restaurant as the previous owners could also not make it work due to the restaurant across the street. The Le Saule has a Michelin Star. Papa is adamant that they have a unique cuisine to offer and buys the restaurant. Papa believes that the locals have never tasted their food, and hence don't know what they are missing in life. Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), "Le Saule Pleureur's owner, asks the Kadams to leave (when he comes to inspect the property) because it is "private property". Papa buys the property, even though the rest of his family is against it, and names the restaurant "Maison Mumbai". Hassan finds many French cookbooks in the restaurant. The family works together to fix the restaurant and make it ready for opening night. Mallory runs a tight ship and makes sure that only perfect dishes are served in her restaurant with the freshest ingredients supplied by local markets. Marguerite tells Hassan that Mallory only cares about earning the 2nd star for her restaurant. Marguerite is herself studying to become the Chef De Cuisine. Mallory comes over to Maison Mumbai to ask for a menu and then buys all the locally available ingredients needed to cook their dishes on opening night. Papa and Hassan have to drive 50 miles to another town to get the ingredients they need. This leaves them with very little time to complete the cooking. No customers turn up for the opening night, so Papa changes into a traditional Indian wear and waits outside the restaurant to entice passersby to enter the restaurant. Mallory's Le Saule is an upscale dining experience, while Maison Mumbai has a festive feel to it. A cold war erupts between Papa and Mallory. Meanwhile Hassan learns French cooking with constant help & a budding romance with Marguerite. Papa & Mallory continue to try and rile each other by filing complaints about each other with the town mayor (Michel Blanc). Mallory complains about the loud music at Papa's restaurant. Papa pays in kind by buying all the pigeons needed for Mallory's menu that she prepared for the visiting minister. Hassan feels this is morally wrong and gifts the pigeons to Mallory by cooking them into a dish, as per specifications. Mallory tastes the dish and throws it in garbage, but secretly she knows that it was cooked perfectly. The war peaks on Bastille Day when one of Mallory's chefs, Jean-Pierre (Clément Sibony), and two others vandalize the Kadams' restaurant by spray-painting words which translate to "France for the French" on the outer wall and firebombing the interior (Mallory has nothing to do with it). Hassan catches the arsonists in the act and scares them off, but his hands and legs are burned from the petrol bombs. That evening Mallory fires Jean-Pierre and cleans up the graffiti on Maison Mumbai's outer wall. Hassan, having heard from Marguerite that Mallory hires potential chefs by taste-testing an omelet and deciding whether the person is indeed a great chef, asks if he may cook an omelet for her to his recipe. Due to his injured hands, Mallory helps under Hassan's supervision. After tasting the omelet, Mallory recognizes Hassan's potential and invites him to work for her. Papa is initially against the move, but ultimately strikes a deal with her as to Hassan's pay. They settle on 320 euros a week, increasing to 350 euros after 3 months. Hassan goes to take Marguerite's permission to cook for Mallory, as he knows that entering Mallory's kitchen would put Hassan and Marguerite in direct competition with each other. Hassan's cooking results in Mallory's restaurant receiving its second Michelin Star. The award draws national attention to Hassan's cooking, and he is offered and accepts a job in Paris. Papa and Mallory make amends and begin seeing each other. Hassan's cooking in Paris quickly receives critical acclaim, fueling speculation of a third Michelin Star for the Paris restaurant, but his work is increasingly bogged down by thoughts of his family and Marguerite (with whom he had an ongoing romance). Hassan returns home and reunites with Marguerite. He invites Marguerite to join him in a business venture-buying a stake in Mallory's restaurant, along with operational control. Hassan believes this will help the restaurant earn its third star. That evening, Hassan and Marguerite prepare dinner at Mallory's restaurant and bring the dishes across the road to the courtyard of Maison Mumbai for all to enjoy.

Widely criticized for its lack of originality, The Hundred-Foot Journey is not only a predictable by-the-numbers schmaltz, but also an unapologetic crowd-pleaser, a multisensory delight, food porn with a big heart and comfort food at its finest all rolled into a succulent, brilliantly crafted and instantly enjoyable classic tale of self-discovery, tolerance and loyalty, sprinkled with an eclectic blend of irresistible charm, mouth-watering escapism, sumptuous cultural authenticity and disarming humanism.

Is he as good as I think he is? -Papa

Another warm and fuzzy film about food in the same year. It's like those two asteroid films all over again. I'm pretty sure that Morgan Freeman is even the President in on of these films, just not sure which one... because he's not actually in either.

An incredibly charming cast get together here with several standouts not the least of which is of course Helen Mirren . Om Puri easily holds his own with her and is one of the highlights of the film. Manish Dayal was able to convince me that reading a new cookbook could be a spiritual experience while Charlotte Lebon could easily charm corpse back to life.…

I was vaguely aware of this movie when it popped up in my RedBox this morning. This movie which deals with dueling restaurant owners in France starts off slow.....then gets interesting in the middle....but then suffers at the end from "Lord of the Ring: Return of the King refuse to end a movie syndrome". Overall I liked the movie, especially the performances from Helen Mirren and Om Puri (looking a lot like Seymour Cassel). This was produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. Action: The Caps Of Mr. Spielberg - The Epilogues RECOMMENDED BY NothingRevealed

A film produced by Spielberg, yet not directed by him, and still you can trace some of his whimsy vibe throughout the entire picture - and not in a good way.

As a movie about food, its often endearing, playing almost like a less cynical version of Burnt but missing some of the appeal of that movie. It never gets to the level of enjoyment of Chef where you can trace and feel the level of excitement and dedication that Favreau put into that feature. In a nutshell, its a story that attempts to tackle the world of high class food through the glance of an Indian immigrant…

Finally watched this after my old friend recommended it to me years ago because “Marguerite reminded [her] of [me]” which, although flattering bc she’s so cute and sweet, confused me at first bc I don’t really cook. But then I remembered the numerous happy nights helping her in the kitchen and got super nostalgic, so Lauren, if you’re reading this hmu I miss you.

ScreeningNotes

"If your food is anything like your music, then I suggest you tone it down."

The Hundred-Foot Journey is a simple and easy food-porn melodrama. Hassan (Manish Dayal), a young chef, moves with his family from India to France and finds himself torn between his native culinary tradition and the cuisine of his new home. From there, the movie sets up a variety of artificial conflicts which are so transparent that they never develop any sense of dramatic tension. For instance, Hassan meets a pretty French girl who likes or dislikes him depending on the demands of the script (e.g. he leaves after having a disagreement, but when he returns she wants him again for no reason).

The film is…

"You seduced his mind, with your awful, tasteless, empty sauces! With your pitiful little squashed bits of garlic!" - Papa

Ahh, a lovely 3 course meal of a movie. Crack 2 eggs and mix together with a little 'Best Exotic Marigold Hotel', un petit peut de 'Chocolat' (the Juliette Binoche one) and a good dollop of 'Before Sunset'. Add spice to taste and voila! A perfect Indo-Franco fusion.

There is nothing not to like here... it's nothing spectacular or particularly arty, but it's just lovely, cardamom-infused fun.

Om Puri plays Papa, the lovable Dad of the family. I remember him from the wonderful 'East is East', and he's brilliant in this too. Om left us in 2017, leaving a legacy of…
