"One of the sport’s most iconic contests, Safari Rally Kenya’s formidable reputation is not to be underestimated with river crossings, rock-strewn sections, climbs and dips, intense heat, plus a slippery surface in the event of heavy rainfall just some of what’s in store when the event takes place from June 22-25 over 355.92 timed kilometres.

As well as forming part of an increasingly exciting race for the prestigious FIA World Rally Championship titles, Safari Rally Kenya provides a chance for several African crews to gain crucial experience and showcase the competitive nature of the FIA African Rally Championship" the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) described the WRC rally in Kenya.

The Safari Rally is known for its rugged terrain, and with the speed that's required to be a winner, WRC cars must endure a diverse array of impacts while maintaining high speeds.

WRC Safari Rally: KCAA Announces Temporary Air Traffic Restrictions Ahead of Naivasha Event

Unlike traditional race cars that navigate smooth, uniform racetracks, rally stages present rugged terrain with dips, sizable rocks, and jumps.

Consequently, rally cars require many enhancements to withstand the rigours of competition and avoid mechanical failures.

According to Hyundai , WRC cars adhere to the specifications established by the FIA, the international motorsports governing body.

Rally Connection notes that rally cars are constructed with significantly heightened safety standards compared to regular road vehicles.

The chassis is outfitted with a minimal outer shell, meticulously reinforced and strengthened to withstand the demanding conditions of the WRC.

These cars undergo thorough seam welding of all joints to enhance structural integrity. The cockpit is equipped with a safety roll-cage featuring multi-point fixtures, engineered to safeguard against roof and side collapse in the event of an accident.

Additionally, every car is outfitted with fire extinguishers and a first aid kit for added safety measures.

Labour crunch forces Croatia to open doors to Asian workforce

The interior of rally cars boasts specialised rally bucket seats meticulously designed to cradle occupants for optimal security and comfort. Occupants are securely fastened into their seats using a safety belt anchored to six points in the car.

Almuftah Garage highlights that rally cars are not equipped with the long-distance suspension commonly found in on-road vehicles.

Instead, rally car suspensions are tailored to assist drivers in navigating corners, tackling bumps, and traversing ruts at exceptionally high speeds.

These specialised suspensions offer adjustable features, allowing for the customisation of factors such as the car's height clearance, suspension stiffness, cornering lean, and more.

Adjustment of suspension softness is facilitated using a suspension canister equipped with knobs for compression tuning.

Most rally cars use specially built tyres exclusively designed for rally conditions, which are unsuitable for on-road use.

These tyres feature robust sidewalls capable of withstanding high-speed impacts in off-road environments and are selected based on the type of terrain.

Chinese EV giant BYD announces record annual profit for 2023

"All Rally1 cars competing on Safari Rally Kenya will use the Scorpion KX soft and hard tyres from official supplier Pirelli. The soft compound is the first choice for use in cool and damp conditions, while the hard compound is for warm and dry weather. Rally1 teams can use a maximum of 28 tyres for the event, including four for Shakedown," said the FIA.

The World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally 2024 takes place in Naivasha, Kenya, during the Easter holidays.

Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) released an air traffic control schedule for temporary restricted areas.

KCAA said only 15 helicopters have been cleared to operate in the restricted areas between March 28 and March 31, 2024.

We may have visited Africa last year, but it feels no less exciting for the World Rally Championship to be going back in 2022.

It may be a scaled challenge in terms of competitive distance compared to what it once was, but Safari Rally Kenya is a special event and a really unique challenge.

Here’s all the key information you need for this season’s first event outside Europe.

Entry breakdown

Total 30 crews 12 Priority 1 crews 8 Priority 2 crews (WRC2) 5 Priority 3 crews (WRC3) 5 Non-priority crews

Despite the Safari entry being the smallest of the season so far, the Rally1 lineup is actually the equal highest with 12 cars taking the start.

All three teams are fielding a different array of drivers to the last round in Sardinia, as Kalle Rovanperä and Elfyn Evans are once again joined at Toyota by reigning world champion and last year’s Safari winner Sébastien Ogier.

Ogier’s part-time counterpart and old rival Sébastien Loeb is also back for his third round of the season, taking the controls of a Ford Puma Rally1 alongside Craig Breen and Adrien Fourmaux.

Loeb’s presence once again relieves Gus Greensmith of manufacturer points scoring duties, while Jourdan Serderidis becomes the first private driver to run a Rally1 car in the WRC as he’ll compete in his own Puma.

Change is also afoot at Hyundai as Oliver Solberg gets his first Rally1 start since April.

Each driver contesting a full season in WRC2 must select one long haul event to be eligible in the final championship standings, but not that many have chosen Safari Rally Kenya as their trip outside Europe.

Triple European Rally champion Kajetan Kajetanowicz has though and looks a strong favorite for victory in his Škoda Fabia Rally2 evo, but Martin Prokop has the advantage of taking this rally on last year.

And then there’s Sean Johnston who surely has his best chance yet of a WRC2 podium this week in his Citroën C3 Rally2.

There’s plenty of local interest too as Karan Patel, Amanraaj Rai and Aakif Virani have all entered.

Paraguay native Diego Dominguez jr sticks out in what is an otherwise all-Kenyan contest in WRC3.

McRae Kimathi is the headline act given he’s contesting a season of Junior WRC this year, but Jeremy Wahome is the top seed and he won the class on last year’s Safari on what was his very first rally. Not just in the WRC, ever.

Hamza Anwar is next ahead of Kimathi, while Jeremy’s older sister Maxine makes her debut in a Ford Fiesta Rally3.

speed of a safari rally car

Safari Rally Kenya is unique for a modern event (not just because of the rugged nature and mesmerizing wildlife) in that it runs across five days – and has a service break on Sunday. Shakedown is on Wednesday before a superspecial on Thursday and the real meat of the action on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

At 225.5 stage miles, the Safari is the longest event of the season so far and the route has undergone some subtle tweaks from last year.

Several stages have been tweaked to include new sections, while Geothermal on Friday and Narasha on Sunday are completely brand-new stages.

Hell’s Gate remains as the powerstage while Sleeping Warrior – the stage that turned the rally on its head last year when rain suddenly fell – is the only full-length test to remain unchanged from 2021.

WRC - Africa awaits as the competition goes on Safari in Kenya

2024 FIA World Rally Championship - Safari Rally Kenya (round 3/13)

  • World Rally Championship
  • SEASON 2024
  • Safari Rally Kenya

speed of a safari rally car

The diverse and spectacular nature of the FIA World Rally Championship will be highlighted to the full in Africa next week (March 27-31) with the 72nd Safari Rally Kenya marking the third event of an increasingly exciting WRC season.

Just three points separate the top two drivers, Thierry Neuville and Elfyn Evans, in the provisional standings, while the lead of the FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers is shared by Hyundai and Toyota. M-Sport Ford has taken a podium finish in 2024 to underline the strong competition among the Rally1 contenders in the FIA WRC. Since its eagerly anticipated return to the FIA WRC calendar in 2021, Safari Rally Kenya has run in June. However, it’s back in its traditional Easter weekend slot for 2024 and is therefore the first gravel-based round of the year.  It also coincides with Kenya’s rainy season, which means the threat of downpours is ever present. For an event ranked as one of the most challenging on the calendar, that prospect only adds to the task in store for the FIA WRC drivers and their teams as they negotiate the stunning East African terrain.

THE ROUTE IN SHORT The FIA World Rally Championship stars and their cars will be challenged on 19 stages over a timed distance of 367.76 kilometres, a route that’s largely unchanged from 2023.  Following the event-opening Super Special Kasarani in out-of-town Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, on Thursday March 28, the rally relocates to Lake Naivasha, its hub for the remaining three days of competition.  Friday’s first full leg consists of three stages run either side of the Naivasha service halt. Kedong, SS4/SS7, features a new section in the Miti Mbili area and is run in a reverse direction compared to 2023.  Saturday’s action is based around Lake Elmenteita north of Naivasha. The three repeated stages include Sleeping Warrior, now up to 36.08 kilometres from 31.04 and the longest of the rally after a new closing section of some seven kilometres was added.  Sunday’s deciding leg begins with Malewa, which has been reduced from 9.00 kilometres in length to 8.33. The Oserengoni stage, titled Oserian last season, gets its name from the wildlife conservancy estate where it’s located. The 10.53-kilometre Hell’s Gate tests hosts the Wolf Power Stage from 14:15.

SATURDAY MIDDAY: Rovanperä faces balancing act on legendary Safari

Kalle Rovanperä is tackling a tightrope of speed and caution at Safari Rally Kenya. He led the event comfortably after Saturday morning but his Toyota team-mates fell afoul of the brutal conditions.

The Finn headed a trio of a Toyota GR Yaris cars by almost one minute coming into this penultimate leg, with his team-mates Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta starting the day in podium position. That dynamic had flipped by the time crews returned for lunchtime service in Naivasha after Evans punctured in Soysambu and Sleeping Warrior and Katsuta faced similar troubles in the latter. The pair slipped to fifth and third respectively, elevating Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville to second overall. Unfazed out front and with his lead stretched to 1m 27.9s over Neuville, Rovanperä conceded that striking a safe balance between speed and caution was no easy task. “It’s not easy with the big gap,” he revealed. “You don’t want to be too flow, but you also don’t want to take too many risks.”

speed of a safari rally car

Neuville was on a comeback drive after facing tyre troubles himself on Friday, and a heavy bump towards the end of the rain-dotted Sleeping Warrior was the Belgian’s only real complaint. The same couldn’t be said for his i20 N colleagues Ott Tänak and Esapekka Lappi, who both restarted after retiring on Friday. Tänak pull over in SS8 to secure a loose bonnet pin and intercom failure meant he relied on hand signals from co-driver Martin Järveoja in the following test. Lappi, meanwhile, sustained two damaged tyres. A frustrated Katsuta completed the podium 55.0s behind Neuville while M-Sport Ford youngster Adrien Fourmaux climbed to fourth in his Puma, 27.7s behind. Grégoire Munster retired his similar car with broken rear suspension after SS8. Sixth-placed Gus Greensmith continued his stronghold on the WRC2 category ahead of his Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 rival Oliver Solberg while Jourdan Serderidis, Kajetan Kajetanowicz and Nicolas Ciamin rounded out the top 10.

ineos grenadier ediciones especiales

ineos grenadier ediciones especiales

ineos grenadier ediciones especiales

ineos grenadier ediciones especiales
