Cottages in the Scottish Borders

An area awash with history, the Scottish Borders have been much fought over in conflicts such as the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 13 th and 14 th centuries. It wasn’t until 1975 that the area now known as the Scottish Borders, was created. As such, you can see evidence of the years of changing ownership in the English and Scottish place names throughout the region.

It isn’t hard to understand why the lush, rolling hills of the Scottish Borders were so fought over. Sweeping valleys, bountiful forests and scenic moorlands filled with heather now provide peaceful, rural surroundings. With an area of 1800 square miles to explore, getting lost in the variety of different scenery the area yields, is a pleasure.

The rich and fascinating history of the area provides plenty of entertainment for those who want to take a trip back in time. There are numerous historical buildings, stately homes and castles to visit. Melrose Abbey is a must-see, where the embalmed heart of Robert the Bruce is said to have been laid to rest.

For those more interested in the present day, the gardens and grounds that accompany the historical buildings are a delight to explore.

Those in search of natural forest surrounds have plenty to choose from, such as Glentress Forest, where you can take it at a gentle pace with walking and hiking trails or go full speed ahead on one of the many mountain bike courses that cover the area. With so much spectacular unspoilt natural scenery, the Scottish Borders are alive with wildlife.

A great year-round destination, the Scottish Borders offer a wealth of attractions and amusements to keep you occupied every day of your holiday.

Longray 2680A Fogger with 30" Hose

High Performance CE Approved Portable Electric ULV Cold Fogger for fogging bactericides, virucides, insecticides, pesticides & ariel disinfectants.

These machines have become extremely important in the fight against Corona Virus Covid 19 as they are able to disinfect both small and large areas quickly and effectively with the fine fog accessing every surface of the room which otherwise would be difficult to treat and in a fraction of the time. The fog particles produced are so fine they float in the air long enough to disinfect even the upper surfaces.

Hard surfaces & high touch points are then again disinfected.

A cleaning check list for Self-Catering Units is also available inside our Lodges for your perusal.

PPE also worn whilst servicing the Lodges.

Successfully obtained the Covid-19 Holiday Let Cleaning Course by www.landlordslittlehelper.co.uk which is accredited by the ASSC and

“We’re Good to Go” scheme which is a Risk assessment with Visit Scotland.

Also British Cleaning Certificate, Coronavirus Awareness Certificate, Health & Safety in the Workplace Certificate and Travel & Tourism Diploma.

The ‘We’re Good to Go’ scheme has been recognised by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) as meeting its international global standardised health and hygiene protocols so you can experience Safe Travels. The protocols for the WTTC’s global Safe Travels stamp were designed with the World Health Organisation and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines' and developed alongside leading industry associations & international organisations.

This industry standard demonstrates we are adhering to the latest Government and public health guidance & have carried out a COVID-19 risk assessment and have the required processes in place to aid social distancing & cleanliness, reassuring customers & local residents.

The AA COVID - 19 Confident accreditation shows our customers that our business has the necessary risk assessment & safety measures in place in line with the UK's respective government and trade association guidelines & best practices.

Holiday accommodation in Scotland

Scottish tourist board accommodation grading.

The Scottish Tourist Board assessment is on quality of self-catering accommodation in Scotland, rather than on the size or range of facilities on offer. VisitScotland, previously known as the Scottish Tourist Board, has a star system to assess standards for tourists and visitors to Scotland. 5 star is the top level of excellence. You can view Visit Scotland.com for further tourist board grading information. The assessment of self-catering holiday accommodation gives an indication of cleanliness, hospitality, service, ambience and accommodation standard. There is a scale of 1-5 Stars, and gives reassurance about the quality you can expect before you arrive at your Scottish holiday accommodation. Many cottages have been graded by the STB, it is not a criteria for being listed on this site, but you may find it helpful and reassuring to note the following;

5 stars - Exceptional, world-class

4 stars - excellent.

3 Star self-catering holiday cottage

3 stars - Very good

2 Star self-catering holiday cottage

2 stars - Good

1 star - fair, acceptable.

Visit Scotland also access self-catering properties for those with mobility impairment requiring disabled access.

Self-catering | Star rating criteria

Learn about the areas we score for self-catering when determining your Quality Assurance Star rating.

How do we determine your Star rating?

The Quality Assurance Grading Visit comprises of an assessment of the quality of the entire guest experience. It takes into account every point of interaction guests will have when engaging with your business.

There are two main aspects which are assessed:

  • the appropriate levels of quality   must score in line with the Star rating awarded
  • all minimum entry requirements need to be in place

In this article:

1. what do the star ratings mean, 2. how we score quality, 3. areas and elements scored, 4. minimum entry requirements for a star rating.

Our Star ratings are represented by 1 to 5 stars

  • 5 Star - reflects an exceptional standard, with an overall percentage score of 87% to 100%
  • 4 Star - reflects an excellent standard, with an overall percentage score of 75% to 86%
  • 3 Star - reflects a very good standard, with an overall percentage score of 60% to 74%
  • 2 Star - reflects a good standard, with an overall percentage score of 48% to 59%
  • 1 Star - reflects an acceptable standard, with an overall percentage score of 34% to 47%

A potential 38 elements are assessed depending on the nature of the business.  A score from 0 to 5 is awarded for each element. This will result in an overall percentage score that will place your establishment within one of five grading bands.

However, it is not simply the overall percentage score that determines the final award.

If any of the 38 potential elements assessed scores zero this will result in no award being confirmed. Please note, where any element is not applicable, no assessment will be made and there will be no penalty for not providing any of these facilities or services.

In addition, a self-catering property must score a minimum of three in any element relating to cleanliness for an award to be confirmed.

For any award, there are also five key areas   that must meet a minimum percentage score for the final award that is confirmed.

The key areas are:

  • cleanliness
  • public areas

If any of the five key areas score below the band of the overall percentage, it is the lower award that will be confirmed.

The overall percentage and the five key area minimum percentage scores required for each Star rating are shown in the following table.

Read our detailed minimum entry requirements to be considered for a Star rating as a self-catering business. You can also browse additional requirements for higher Star ratings where applicable.
