Chimpanzee attacked by other chimps at safari park dies.

A chimpanzee who was seriously hurt after other members of the group ganged up on him has died at safari park Beekse Bergen, park authorities have said.

“Conflict between chimpanzees is not unusual, the park said in a reaction . The chimp who died was 23 years old. Chimpanzees in captivity usually live to around 40.

Park manager Rens Willemsen said that some visitors witnessed the incident and  had reported it. “We could then quickly get the group inside and separate chimp Wouter from the others. But unfortunately he did not wake up from the anesthetic,” he told the Brabants Dagblad.

Attacks among chimpanzees also take place in nature. Most lethal aggression occurs between groups, where groups of male chimpanzees occasionally kill members of neighbouring communities, research has shown. But occasionally there is also aggression among chimpanzees who know each other and live together.

Wouter is not the first casualty at Beekse Bergen. Last year chimpanzee Stephan drowned in a moat after being chased by other chimpanzees.

We booked last minute as our originally trip to Europe needed to be amended but we wanted to make the most of our time away and found this site. Our children loved it. The water park and all the rides were a huge hit as well as the Safari. We stayed four nights and we were exhausted by the end of it! Really well enjoyed by all. We had a great pitch near to the shop and pool etc. Shop was really well stocked and we used it for our entire stay. Our children are aged 8 and 7 and would definitively recommend to similar ages.

Have just returned from camping for 9 nights. We arrived at 4.55pm to find reception shut and we were abit stuck with what to do, we manged to drive in, we spoke to spar who directed us to the info desk who told us to ring a number who told us just to go set up, use the map on the app! As newbies to the site we felt this was abit disorganised. Otherwise a great holiday. We were camping right next to Africa club and twice during our 8 nights stay the music at the club was left on ALL night, very quiet I may add, but still it kept us awake, it was like background music. It's a shame that due it corona your only allowed to swim once in a 7 day period, however I must say it was very organised. Our children age 2 and 5 loved the safari and speelland. The spar on site was very reasonably priced and stocked well. We had a great holiday and would definitely return!

Unfortunally you didn't read it or didn't reveice it. Also we work with the Beekse Bergen app so we don't have to provide a lot of paperwork because of corona. Sorry about the music you heart all night. We don't have music in the Africa club all night, so probebly it was from an other place outside our park. We had a throughly enjoyable half term break at the Beekse Bergen Holiday Park. The set up worked well for a brief break - the accommodation comes with free entry to both play park on the opposite side of the lake, and to the safari park, so (along with a trip to Eftling which is c. 20mins away) we had more than enough to do with a 5 and 7 year old. In fact we may well come back.
 The check in was painless with friendly, English-speaking staff. The whole set-up is very Centre-Parcs-esque, with lodges in woodland (there is also a large campsite although it wasn't busy at this time in October). We stayed in a kids Jungalow, so called because it is close to a play area. The accommodation was OK although a little basic / dated, and could really do with a refresh (think suspended ceiling tiles and painted block walls). However it was clean, warm and generally well equipped (although, like other similar places we've been in Europe, no oven or toaster. Also, the cups were incomprehensibly small and the mugs didn't have handles so were useless for hot drinks. But there were eight sherry glasses... We couldn't quite follow the crockery logic). One small problem we had was rectified very efficiently. The wifi in the accommodation was free, reliable and fast which was very helpful. The swimming pool, likewise, could do with a bit of a refresh as it looked a little tired, but our children thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless, with the combination of a small slide, a kids water playground, and a larger pool with a small lazy river. It was very clean and well supervised with alert lifeguards. The floor tiles were a little slippy. We didn't try the park restaurant - the menu looked uninspiring. They also - like many places we found in the Netherlands - don't take Visa which also discouraged us. The on-site Spar did, however. The play park and, especially, the safari park were excellent - we didn't leave enough time for the safari park so only managed to do about half the walking safari. However we saw a lot of animals, which seemed content in very large enclosures. The park seemed very neat, tidy and well looked after. It was extremely geared-up for children, with plenty of play areas as well as the animals. The gorilla island was a particular favourite. The play park on the other side of the lake - apparently a boat goes there although I suspect only in the summer - was also a good way to pass a couple of hours, although some of the activities were shut as it is approaching the end of season. However our children loved almost having the run of the place to themselves. The nearby area, especially the town of Hilvarenbeek, was lovely and everyone we dealt with was very friendly. Overall, we would certainly come to this area again as we barely scratched the surface. We might try the newer accommodation on the Safari Park, though. Oh - and we'll bring our own mugs...

So for our fisrt time on a eurocamp family holiday we chose to stay in a safari tent for 6 nights,3 adults and 2 children (9 and 14 yrs)The tent was well equiped and spacious, perfect for lazy evenings together, The site has a strict quiet time between 10pm and 7am which was great for sitting in the porch playing cards and listening to the lions roar etc. The site itself is clean and tidy with a well stocked shop,decent swimming pool and easy access to speeland and the safari park. The swimming lake is also great if you prefer swimming outdoors. we had two great days at the safari park which has lots of animals in very spacious surroundings ....well worth a visit and if you do go you must have a whippy ice cream as they are yummy and huge. Our eurocamp rep Tom deserves a special mention for being so helpful and friendly, He was informative and chatty and went out of his way to make us all feel very welcome even though he was often very busy he always had time for a chat. Highlights of the holiday- The safari park/Hearing the lions roar through the night,Giant profiteroles and Tom! we will definately use eurocamp again and will also return to beekse bergen.

We have just returned from what has been the most wonderful holiday. Here is my personal and honest opinion of Beekse Bergen .. We travelled via Eurotunnel which was very quick. The journey from Calais to Beekse took 4 hours due to roadworks in places. We were staying 5 nights with Eurocamp in a safari tent and the another 2 nights camping in our own tent. Our first impressions of the service by Eurocamp was disappointing - the rep was not very helpful; furniture was missing from the tent (but quickly rectified) and we were given very little information about the park/no welcome pack and instead directed to the main reception which was quite a distance to get back to. However this is where the negatives end as this place is perfect for a wonderful family holiday. The safari tent (once all the furniture was there!) was excellent, very comfortable and had everything you needed, including a fridge freezer. The camping pitch was basic but very spacious. Toilet/shower block was very clean and well equipped. The grounds are beautiful. The lake setting, beaches and playgrounds dotted around the park made for a wonderful family setting. Enjoyed travelling across the lake to get to Speeland (which we visited three times). Despite it being peak season no where felt over-crowed even the Safari Park. Speeland was brilliant for our family - our older boys could go off and explore happily and our toddler had a wonderful time on the beach and in the water. Loved the fact all the amusements were free! The safari park has to be arguably one of the best in Europe and from our experience (we have a lot!!) was the best zoo/safari we’ve visited. Plentiful numbers of animals exploring their spacious surroundings. Lunch opposite the baboons and elephants was a highlight. We did all 3 options of exploring the park (car, boat and walking) and each were excellent. This place is definitely set up for kids with small playgrounds and obstacle courses dotted around the walk ways so they didn’t get bored. We hired bikes which were reasonably priced and found a wonderful pub with an excellent kids play area. Would highly recommend (it closes on Tuesdays) - De Gulle Brabander . Agree with other reviews that the restaurant is overpriced and not worth it . Shopped at ALDI in Tilburg and the small onsite shop which was well stocked and priced. Only other negatives would be ... - sand flies are everywhere as this place is built on sandy soil. Not sure if there is anything to stop them! Take insect repellent for the other biting bugs out there! - avoid playing in the trees as my son got a rash from the hairy caterpillars but a dose of piriton sorted him out. Our kids were sad to leave and we will be back in the future. Thank you Beekse Bergen for a wonderful summer holiday!
