Either way, we’ve got you covered with this list of the top things to do near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport . These recommendations will help you make the most of your time in Mumbai, whether it’s your first visit or not.

Table of Contents

Best hotel near Mumbai Airport?

I stayed at The Grand Hotel at Ballard Estate, located in the Fort Area. It is one of the prime localities in Mumbai due to its proximity to several attractions. I will be posting a detailed review of the hotel soon.

How to reach Mumbai?

Mumbai is cosmopolitan and well-connected with almost every city in India. Moreover, its railway and air network is one of the busiest in India. I took an early morning flight from Delhi and reached Mumbai at 10 am. Taking an early flight allowed me to explore places near the airport.

Airport:  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

Railway Station:  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus

5 Things to do near Mumbai airport

Basilica of our lady of the mount, bandra.

Basilica-of-Our-Lady-of-the-Mount-Bandra-mumbai

The Mount Mary Church, also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, is a beautiful and historic place of worship in Bandra, Mumbai. Its Neo-gothic architectural style makes for a picturesque facade, making this a popular destination for celebrities and tourists. The best time to visit this church is during the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is followed by a week-long festival known as the  Bandra Fair . I was totally mesmerized by the architecture and the location. It is truly a stunning piece of history and a must-visit in Mumbai.

Note : Photography is not allowed within the premises, including phone photography.

Bandra Fort

bandra-fort-mumbai

Bandra Fort is an ancient fortress overlooking the Arabian sea, built by the Portuguese to serve as a watchtower. The fort provided potable water to the passing ships, hence was called  Castella de Aguada . What you see now are the ruins. However, the city skyline looks marvelous from this place.

Versova beach

juhu-beach-mumbai

Mumbai airport is very close to the coastline. In fact, the view right before landing is just breathtaking. I never miss a chance to make a video. Therefore, a visit to one of the closest beaches is a must. I recommend visiting Versova Beach. It is a 20-minutes drive from the airport and is a beautiful place to sit and relax. I would also recommend avoiding Juhu Beach. It is crowded and smells of dead fish. There is nothing special about Juhu beach, neither the view nor the vibe. So, I recommend you skip this and head to Versova beach instead.

powai-lake-mumbai

If you have a layover in Mumbai, you should definitely check out Powai. It is just 5.6 km from the airport and is one of the best suburban districts in Mumbai, full of stunning architecture and a beautiful lake to explore. Grab a bite at a cafe in the Galleria market, and take a leisurely stroll to admire the architecture and the lake. While you are at the lake, keep an eye on the wildlife, from birds to crocodiles. I had the chance to visit Powai on my way back to the airport and was blown away by its beauty. Keep an eye out for more details in my future articles!

Explore The Celebrity Houses

amitabh-bachchans-house-jalsa-bandra-mumbai

If you are a Bollywood buff, this is one of the most fun things to do in Mumbai. Several Bollywood celebrities reside in Bandra and Juhu, making it the best place to spot your favorite celeb. However, remember to respect their boundaries and be courteous. You can simply walk or drive around to spot the houses. Mannat (SRK’s house) is near the Mount Mary Church, while Jalsa (Amitabh Bachchan) can be seen on the way to Prithvi Cafe in Juhu from Bandra.

I hope you enjoyed reading this article, check out more things to do in Mumbai on the blog. If you have any suggestions I should cover in the future, let me know in the comments. I am always looking for new and exciting destinations to explore, and I would love to hear your recommendations.

BOM Airport Overview

To help you plan your layover or overnight sleepover, here is a quick run-down about what to expect during your time at Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

What to Expect

Mumbai Airport (code: BOM) has two large terminals. Terminal 1 services domestic flights in three buildings: 1A, 1B, and 1C. (Terminal 1A is the oldest, with poor facilities.) International flights are handled by the brand new Terminal 2. Your experience will depend on your terminal.

Travellers warn that security procedures often take a long time, so arrive early for peace of mind. The goods news is that you’ll find plenty of eateries and shops, a few of which are open 24 hours. Free WiFi helps pass the time. Want to upgrade your layover? Economy class passengers can pay to enter several airport lounges, one of which has shower facilities. See Airport Lounges in the guide below for locations and access information.

Mahabaleshwar (263 kms from Mumbai)

Mahabaleshwar, a renowned hill station is located in the Western Ghat Ranges in Maharashtra. This misty place boasts of one of the few evergreen forests in the country. It had once served as the summer capital of the Bombay province during the British era. Situated at an elevation of 1,353 meters, the verdant land is a wide plateau surrounded by valleys on all sides.

The city is the source of the River Krishna that flows across the three states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. The highest peak in the ranges has an elevation of 4,721 feet and is known as the Wilson or Sunrise Point.

Mahabaleshwar is a popular hill station near Mumbai. Besides being an important tourist destination, it is also a favorite honeymoon destination and pilgrimage site. The Mahabaleshwar Temple is one of the most popular places in the city. Several visitors visit Mahabaleshwar on their way to Panchgani. The city is also known for its market for strawberries and mulberries. Another major attraction in the city is the Venna Lake. Visitors can enjoy boat rides on the lake or a horse ride next to the lake.

The most notable feature about Mahabaleshwar is the presence of a number of spots in the city which mark the vantage points from where the beauty of the city can be enjoyed the most. There are as many as 14 points in the city and include Arthur’s Seat, Kate’s Point, Needle Hole Point, Wilson Point, the Three Monkey Point, etc.

Arthur’s Seat point has an elevation of 1340 meters and is named after Sir Arthur Mallet. Daman (171 kms from Mumbai)

Daman is famous for a weekend getaway from Mumbai. It is a city in the Union territory of Daman and Diu . The city is divided into two parts by the Daman Ganga River. The two halves of the city are called the Nanidaman and Motidaman. Nanidaman is the larger of the two towns and has most of the important hospitals, supermarkets, and major residential areas and it is one of the beautiful tourist places near Mumbai.

Motidaman is the older town and is inhabited mostly by fishermen and government officers. Both the towns were earlier connected by two bridges, one meant for light vehicles and the other meant for heavy vehicles. The smaller of the two bridges collapsed in 2004 and efforts were repeatedly made to make the structure stronger. However, now the bridge has been closed to the public. A new bridge called the Rajiv Gandhi Setu has been built to connect both the towns.

Daman is situated at a distance of 171 kilometers from Mumbai and forms an important manufacturing hub along with Vapi, Silvassa, Billimora and Bhilad Sarigam. The history of Daman is quite interesting. Portuguese explorer Diogo de Melo arrived at this place by chance in 1523.

The city became a Portuguese colony for almost 400 years. In the 16th century, a large fort was built in Motidaman to protect the colony from the Mughals. The fort still stands in Daman today and most of the government offices have been established inside the fort.

The local population of Daman consists mainly of fishermen called Tandels. The demography is a mix of Hindus, Muslims, and Christians. This picturesque land attracts a large number of people from the neighboring states of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Apart from its scenic beauty, one major reason for the high inflow of tourists is the freedom to drink liquor. Jaigad (310 kms from Mumbai)

Another adventure place which is a must-visit for you when you are traveling to Mumbai is Jaigad. Nothing can be a better option for you than exploring the age-old fort here. The meeting point of the rivers Shashtri and the Arabian Sea is called the creek of Jaigad. Forts were constructed for the protection of the creek, one is Vijaygad in the north direction and the other is Jaigad at the south. It is a profound pit (Khandak) around the stronghold on east and north heading. On the correct side of the bastion close to the fundamental entryway, there is a way to go into the profound pit. After entering through this door, steps are there to reach to the strongholds of the fortress. The strongholds are still in solid and sound condition.  Although the fort is much smaller in size as compared to other forts the stronghold is critical in the historical backdrop of Marathas for its area. Other than the fortress, the port of Jaigad is more established than the stronghold and used to be considered as one of the main ports in the Western Coast of India. Ellora (350 kms from Mumbai)

Ellora (350 kms from Mumbai)

Ellora, also known as Elapura and Ellooru, is one is an archaeological site and is situated near Aurangabad in Maharashtra. It was built by the kings of the Rashtrakuta dynasty and is well known for its monumental caves. The site has been declared as a World Heritage Site and is considered to be the epitome of Indian rock cut architecture. The location has 34 caves, which are really structures that have been dug out of the face of the Charanandri Hills. It has a number of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain rock cut temples and several viharas and mathas, which are believed to have been built between the 5th and 10th centuries. There are as many 12 Buddhist caves, 17 Hindu caves and 5 Jain caves, which are evidence to the religious tolerance existing in the region at that time. It was initially thought that the Buddhist caves were the earliest structures at the site. However, later it was discovered that specific Hindu caves have been existence even before the Buddhist ones. Some of the Buddhist caves have shrines that bear carvings of Gautama Buddha, saints and bodhisattvas. Interestingly, in certain places, the artists have tried to make the stone structures look like as if they were made of wood. Among all the Buddhist caves, the most interesting one is the Vishwakarma cave, also called the Carpenter’s Cave.  It has a multi-storey entrance and a cathedral like stupa called the Chaitya. In the centre, there is a 15 foot statue of Buddha sitting in a preaching position. The ceiling has been beautifully carved in a manner to make it look like it is made of wooden beams. Among the Hindu caves, the most notable is the Kailasanatha. It is based on the mythological Mount Kailasa, the abode of Lord Shiva. Carved out of one single stone, the monument covers an area double the size of the Parthenon in Athens. Earlier, the temple was covered in white plaster to make it resemble the Mount Kailasa. Priyadarshini Park and Sports Complex is a clean and well-maintained sea-facing attraction in South Mumbai. Located in one of the sophisticated localities, this Napeansea Road park overlooks many expensive apartments on the street. Every nook and corner of this 20 acres land has now become a powerhouse to keep the heart of Mumbai pumping. For more than 3 decades, this wonderland has served as a recreational site, and sports and fitness complex. Visit here early in the morning to witness the magic of this refuge for the inhabitants of Mumbai.  Also, Mumbaikars do not forget to visit here in the early monsoons to sit on its sea-facing end and seek a delight with the sound of soothing waves. Once, this piece of land was merely a rocky patch of the coastal area of Malabar. What you see today is a gorgeous lush green garden lined up with a total of 600+ coconut trees. With a perfect and well-maintained ambiance, this park is a boon for early morning yoga, jogging, walking, aerobics, and so on. The credit, of course, goes to its active group – the Malabar Hill Citizen Forum, who looks after it as its own child. You can connect with their authorities to be an annual member of the plethora of recreational sports activities that they organize. In addition to pumping the adrenaline of youth with its recreational touch, Priyadarshini Park of Mumbai also serves as an ideal family outing location and a lover’s point. If you are fortunate enough, you may even witness little squirrels accompanying you here for some pleasing views.

Taraporewala Aquarium

This sightseeing place in Mumbai is one of the largest aquariums in the city of Mumbai. Situated in Marine Drive, this aquarium was founded by D. B. Taraporewala, a Parsi philanthropist, in the year 1951. The aquarium has a twelve feet long three-sixty degrees glass tunnel that holds interesting marine life. There are several species of fish here, such as damselfish, butterfly fish, tiger fish, angelfish, moss, sea urchins, sea cucumber, marine eels, etc

Babulnath

Whenever you are visiting Mumbai, Babulnath Shiva temple is a must-visit for inner peace and tranquillity. It is one of the oldest temples in Mumbai, which increases its importance in the eyes of the loyal devotees. Its walls are specially carved with limestone that depicts the Hindu mythology, which travellers find it exciting at the first look. At this temple, the beautiful marble flooring is specially brought down from Rajasthan. Thus, each step you take inside this temple feels royal and enchanting along with the daily devotees you can meet and greet, dressed in Indian attires. So, every moment spent in this temple is blissful with internal peace and devotion. Moreover, you can witness devotees from different corners of the world who love to pay their tribute to Lord Shiva and other idols.Once you enter the holy temple revered by so many Hindus and locals, you can find sculptures and idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and Nandi with Kashyap. We would also advise you to buy a basket outside the temple steps before entering. This basket will bring joy, happiness and fulfil all your wishes once you pay your heartfelt worship to Shiva and other lords like Durga Mata and Goddess Parvati at the centre of this temple.  If you have any doubts regarding the same, you can always ask devotees around you or the priest to know how to get the prayer done with the basket that you buy.On the other hand, idols of Goddess Parvati and Durga Mata are respectfully placed in the centre of this temple. What’s even more special about this temple is that around 4 times a day, prayers for Lord Shiva are recited here. This temple gets approximately a lakh devotees for Darshan during the Mahashivratri. The whole scenario is a sight to behold and capture in your hearts to narrate stories about back home.

By Kristy Tolley

Spending a Night in Mumbai Airport

Mumbai airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, with millions of passengers passing through its gates every year. For those who have a layover or a delayed flight, spending a night in the airport might be necessary. While it may not be the most comfortable option, there are ways to make the experience more bearable. In this article, we’ll explore the options available for sleeping in Mumbai airport and provide tips for a smooth overnight stay.

What are the options for sleeping at Mumbai airport?

There are several options for sleeping at Mumbai airport. The most common option is to simply find a spot to lay down and try to get some rest. The airport has several seating areas, including benches and lounge chairs, where passengers can rest. Another option is to rent a pod or a capsule at the airport’s Sleep Pods Lounge. These pods provide a private space to sleep and come equipped with a bed, a TV, and a charging station. Finally, there is the option of booking a room at the Transit Hotel, which is located inside the airport.

Pros and cons of sleeping in Mumbai airport

Sleeping in Mumbai airport has its pros and cons. On the one hand, it’s convenient and free. Passengers don’t have to worry about transportation to and from a hotel, and they can save money on accommodation. On the other hand, it can be uncomfortable and noisy. The airport is always busy, and there is constant noise from announcements, cleaning crews, and other passengers. Additionally, sleeping in public places can be unsafe, as passengers risk having their belongings stolen or being approached by strangers.

Is it safe to spend a night in Mumbai airport?

While Mumbai airport is generally safe, passengers should take precautions when spending a night there. It’s important to keep an eye on personal belongings and to avoid sleeping in isolated areas. The airport has a dedicated police force, and passengers can seek their assistance if they feel unsafe. Additionally, the airport has CCTV cameras throughout the premises, which provide an added layer of security.

The Transit Hotel: A comfortable option for overnight stays

For passengers who prefer a more comfortable option, the Transit Hotel is an excellent choice. Located inside the airport, the hotel offers a range of rooms, from single occupancy to family suites. Rooms are equipped with comfortable beds, TVs, and private bathrooms. The hotel also has a restaurant and a bar, making it a convenient option for dining.

How to book a room at the Transit Hotel in Mumbai airport?

Passengers can book a room at the Transit Hotel online or at the hotel’s reception desk. It’s recommended to book in advance, as rooms can fill up quickly during peak travel seasons. Prices vary depending on the type of room and the length of stay.

Other hotels near Mumbai airport for a good night’s sleep

For passengers who prefer to leave the airport, there are several hotels located near Mumbai airport. These hotels offer shuttle services to and from the airport and provide a more comfortable option for sleeping. Some popular options include the JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar, the Holiday Inn Mumbai International Airport, and the Hyatt Regency Mumbai.

Budget-friendly accommodations near Mumbai airport

For budget-conscious travelers, there are several hostels and guesthouses located near Mumbai airport. These accommodations provide a cheaper option for sleeping, but they may not offer the same level of comfort as hotels. Some popular options include the Backpacker Panda and the Urbanpod Hotel.

Tips for a smooth overnight stay at Mumbai airport

To make the most of an overnight stay at Mumbai airport, passengers should come prepared. It’s recommended to bring a travel pillow, a blanket, and earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones. Passengers should also dress comfortably and bring a change of clothes and toiletries. Additionally, it’s important to stay hydrated and to take breaks from sitting to stretch and move around.

Dining options available during the night at Mumbai airport

Mumbai airport has several dining options available 24 hours a day. These include fast-food chains, coffee shops, and restaurants. It’s recommended to check the airport’s website for a list of dining options and their operating hours.

Entertainment and services to keep you busy at Mumbai airport

In addition to dining options, Mumbai airport has several entertainment and service options available to passengers. These include lounges with comfortable seating and free Wi-Fi, duty-free shops, and spa services. The airport also has a prayer room and a smoking room.

Conclusion: Making the most of your overnight stay at Mumbai airport

Spending a night in Mumbai airport may not be the most comfortable option, but with a little preparation and research, it can be a bearable experience. Passengers should consider their options carefully and choose the option that best suits their needs and budget. With the right mindset and a few essentials, passengers can make the most of their overnight stay and arrive at their destination refreshed and ready to go.

10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night 2024: Nightlife Fun

Budget Hotels > Travel Blog > Destinations > Mumbai > 10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night 2024: Nightlife Fun

There are a few cities in the world which are known for their magnetic vibe and insatiable energy, Mumbai is certainly one of those cities. Ask anyone who has spent some time in the city and they’ll assure you that time in Mumbai moves according to its people. Always a safe haven, even at night, Mumbai has held on to its reputation strongly as a people’s city. Now, there is enough information on how you can spend the day in Mumbai, but we’ll take you through how to make the most of Mumbai at night!

Of course, we have Marine Drive and Chowpatty on our list, BUT we also have a few surprises. Read on…

1. Mohammad Ali Road

#1 of 10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

#1 of 10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

Heaven for food lovers, Mohammad Ali Road in Mumbai is a journey through myriad aromas, colours and sounds. It offers some of the best non-vegetarian delicacies in the city; Nihari , Namkeen Khichda and Kebabs are to name a few.

Of course, all those who visit regularly have their favorites, but we’ve heard that Kebabs at Chinese and Grill, Sanju Baba Chicken at Noor Mohammadi Hotel (yes, it’s named after Sanjay Dutt) and Phirni at Suleman Usman Mithaiwala are definitely not to be missed!

2. Bachelorr’s

#2 of 10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

#2 of 10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

For scrumptious shakes, heaps of ice cream and their unique concoctions of ice cream flavors, Bachelorr’s has become a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Everyone who has family or friends, visiting this busy ice-cream and shakes parlor is definitely on the list of places to visit.

Their mirchi ice-cream and seasonal fruit juices are a specialty and a must try. If this is your first visit here, don’t be surprised by the lack of ambience since it’s mostly a drive through but the desserts more than make up for it!

3. Juhu Chowpatty

#1 of 8 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

#3 of 10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

From movies to books, we have heard, seen and read so much about Chowpatty, it would be difficult to miss this center of activity. During the day, Juhu Chowpatty Beach is a cacophony of sounds and lights, though by the sun sets, this vast expanse of the shoreline is silent and lit up by the stars (if you are lucky). The only sights you might see are of a lone ship or two in the sea and of course the rows of eateries lining the beach.

Try the bhel puri and and a bhurjee bun here – it’s unlike any other you would have tried in Mumbai.

4. Gateway of India

#4 of 10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

Standing tall in its grandeur, the Gateway of India is an impressive, over-whelming beauty; especially at night. With the sea as its backdrop, the gently blowing wind and the soft murmur of people, it is one experience no traveler should miss!

If you are a water baby, another great experience here is going on a short cruise. Surprisingly not very expensive, a cruise from the Gateway costs around Rs. 1500 (approximately) and is anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. You will need to book this at least a couple of days in advance since it’s becoming quite popular.

#3 of 8 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

#5 of 10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

Marine Drive is an iconic stretch of road which overlooks the sea on one side and the beautiful city on the other. Mumbaikers will swear that the best time to visit Marine Drive is definitely in the evening and at night and the best way to enjoy the cool breeze is with a hot cup of thela chai or the extremely famous Mumbai bhel .

If you are here any time after 2:00 am, chances are that the cops will ask you to leave. So if you’d like to experience the calm and serenity of Marine Drive, it’s best to come between 10 pm and 1 am.

Why spend a night in Mumbai without yum food? Bademiya is perhaps one of the most famous eating places in Mumbai for non-vegetarian food and luckily slightly less crowded at night.

Do try the tandoor tikkas , the tandoor chicken and the kebabs with the special green chutney they serve. Bademiya is located behind Hotel Taj Mahal and is open till the wee hours.

7. Carter Road Promenade

#7 of 10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

One of the many places in Mumbai that is as vibrant at night as it is during the day, Carter Road is the perfect place to visit for after-dinner coffee or a leisurely stroll. This spot is featured in many movies and series and is truly as scenic as on the big screen. Most of the food joints here are open well past midnight and your hunger cravings will be well attended too.

8. Bandstand

For a true experience of the city that never sleeps, Bandstand is your place. Head here for a late dinner and stay a couple of extra hours for a late-night stroll overlooking the sea. The dramatically opposing views of the sea on one side and the hustle bustle of the city on the other is what makes Bandstand a truly special experience.

#9 of 10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

This one isn’t for everybody but it’s definitely a must try if you are in Mumbai. The pub culture in the city is quite different from the rest of the metros in India. It’s relaxed and the live performances in some of the clubs are exceptional. Read also – Things to do in Mumbai

The best part about the nightlife of Mumbai is that it has something for everyone. Whether you like rock or karaoke, the city doesn’t disappoint. Some of the more popular pubs here are Blue Frog, The Quarter, Aer (a little expensive but definitely worth it), Trilogy and Hard Rock Cafe.

10. Bandra-Worli Sea Link

#8 of 8 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

#10 of 10 Best Places to Visit in Mumbai at Night

“With dreams in my eyes, I explore this vibrant city, slowly unveiling its colours” – this is exactly how I felt when I first drove through the Sea Link. It’s something about the lights, the air or everything combined together that makes this 8 to 10-minute ride one that you won’t easily forget. If you don’t have a car, ask a cab driver to take you through the passage. They’ll be more than willing and excited to show you their city. Do make sure you visit this part of the city, way past midnight.
