Travel to the Marvelous City of Mymensingh

The city of Mymensingh (also known as Nasirabad), situated on the banks of the river Brahmaputra, is the capital of the district of the same name in Dhaka division, Bangladesh. The district of Mymensingh covers an area of approximately 4,363 kilometers consisting mainly of flat open cultivated fields well watered by numerous rivers, with some elevated jungle areas and nature reserves as well as a game sanctuary

Mymensingh city is almost four hundred years old and has a rich political and cultural history. A number of noteworthy figures were born and raised in Mymensingh, including political figures Monsur Ahmed and Syed Najrul Islam – who served as the acting President of Bangladesh during the Bangladesh Liberation War. The famous Bengali novelist, Shirshendu, was also born in Mymensingh.

During British rule (1858-1947) the majority of the inhabitants of Mymensingh were Hindus. Starting in the early 20th century, Muslims moved into the town and are currently in the majority. The town has, however, played an important role in promoting secularism as well as in educating Bengali Muslim women. There are 28 schools and colleges in the city, including the Bangladesh Agricultural University, and two medical colleges, earning it the nick-name of “City of Education”. The previous palace of Mymensingh Rajbari situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra, which was built between 1905 and 1911, is considered to be an architectural landmark and is a tourist attraction as well as a teacher training college for women. The city of Mymensing has also hosted the annual conference of World Vision , attended by forum members and development group leaders of World Vision Bangladesh to discuss issues related to the fight against poverty and food shortages.

There are a number of places of interest for visitors to explore, including Zainul Abedin art gallery, Mymensingh Rajbari, Monument of the Liberation War, Circuit House and Park, and the Gafar goan-Hossainpur Bridge. The Agricultural University has an extensive botanical garden which is used for research purposes and is open to the public.

Mymensingh is so far the newest division among the eight administrative divisions of Bangladesh. From the establishment of the Dhaka division in 1829 until 13 September 2015, the greater Mymensingh region was part of the Dhaka division.

The greater Mymensingh region (Mymensingh district with the other six neighboring districts) was formed in 1787 by the British government as Mymensingh district. Later, it was reorganized by dividing into six districts. Finally, on 14 September 2015, the Mymensingh division was formed with four districts. The districts of this division are Jamalpur, Sherpur, Mymensingh, and Netrokona.

Mymensingh district was the largest district of Bangladesh from 1970 till 1984. Mymensingh city, on the other hand, is one of the oldest cities in Bangladesh. The name of the city is also found in many ancient books of Bengali literature. The main part of Mymensingh's heritage is the Mymensingh Geetika which has been published as the compilation of ancient folk songs.

The division has a mix of tourist attractions consisting of ancient sites and natural beauty. It has spectacular landscapes in the border districts. On the other hand, it has several historic sites and heritage buildings. Both of these attractions appeal to tourists to visit this region throughout the year.

Sherpur and Netrokona have the most fabulous natural beauty, and Mymensingh and Jamalpur have several historic sites and monuments.

All the districts of this division have a direct connection with Dhaka by road. Buses run daily from Dhaka to Mymensingh region every hour. Direct train services are also available among these districts except Sherpur. Dhaka Airport is the nearest airport to this division.
