The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (formed in 1983) is an American ska group, known for being pioneers of the ska punk genre and creators of the sub-genre ska-core, from Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones was formed in 1983 by members Tim Bridewell and Dicky Barrett on vocals, Nate Albert on guitar, Joe Gittleman on bass, Josh Dalsimer on drums, Tim ‘Johnny Vegas’ Burton on saxophone and Ben Carr as the group’s dancer. Having a shared appreciation for ska but also a wide interest in the local hardcore scene and hard rock bands including AC/DC and Motörhead, the band were known for blurring genre lines.

The band’s recorded debut came on the ska compilation “Mash It Up” where The Bosstones, as they were then called contributed the tracks “The Cave” and “Ugly”. After disbanding to allow members Albert and Gittleman to finish high school the band reunited and signed with Taang! Records who released their debut album “Devil’s Night Out” in 1989. The album’s follow-up came in 1992 with “More Noise and Other Disturbances” which saw Bridewell and Dalsimer depart to go to university and the introduction of drummer Joe Sirois, saxophonist Kevin Lenear and trombonist Dennis Brockenborough.

In 1993 The Bosstones singed with the major label Mercury, which was representative of a slight shift of ska into the mainstream. Through the label they released “Don’t Know How to Party” and landed a TV commercial for a jeans company. A year later came the release of a mini-cover album “Ska-Core, the Devil and More” which paved the way for their well-received fourth full-length “Question the Answers”.

With a change of tide approaching in the ska genre The Bosstones appeared on the 1994 film “Clueless”, performing the songs “Where’d You Go” and “Someday I Suppose”, and occupied a main-stage slot at the year’s Lollapalooza festival.

The band toured extensively throughout the 1990s garnering lots of public appeal including appearances at the Warped Tour and released their fifth studio-album “Let’s Face It” in 1997. The album proved the be The Bosstone’s most successful album largely due to the leading single “The Impression That I Get”, which reached the top spot on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. After the release the band appeared on Sesame Street’s Elmopalooza TV special as well as performing “That Impression That I Get” on Saturday Night Live.

Soon after due to the band’s success Mercury Records released a live album titled “Live From the Middle East”. Members Kevin Lenear and Nate Albert left the group to pursue their own things replaced by Roman Fleysher and Lawrence Katz respectively. The Bosstone’s follow-up album “Pay Attention”, as all of their subsequent albums failed to perform as successfully as “Let’s Face It” and the group parted ways with Mercury and returned to the independent label SideOneDummy for their seventh studio album “A Jackknife to a Swan” in 2002.

In 2003 due to non-stop touring and other side projects The Bosstone’s took a hiatus, which lasted until 2007 where the band played their tenth official Hometown Throwdown at Cambridge’s popular Middle East Club. They followed the show with a album of new songs called “Medium Rare” and have subsequently released the album “The Magic of Youth” in December 2011.

Live reviews

Aside from having one of the all-time great band names and being exceptionally sharp dressers - a quick Google image search will attest to the latter - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are also an irrepressibly fun live band. Having celebrated thirty years since their formation last year, they’ve been touring hard ever since reconvening in 2007, after a four-year break. They’re a ska band, first and foremost, although it’s probably best to put shudder-inducing thoughts of Suggs and ‘Baggy Trousers’ to one side; The Bosstones infuse that particular genre with more straightforward rock and punk influences, making for an intriguing blend of genres that’s earned them a considerable cult following. Wearing matching - and often garish - suits on stage, lead singer Dicky Barrett leads his men - all eight of them - through career-spanning sets, including cuts from a pair of post-reformation records, 2009’s Pin Points and Gin Joints and its 2011 follow-up, The Magic of Youth. The instrumentation reflects their stylistic diversity; there’s brass, of course, in order to properly translate their ska leanings to the stage, but noisy guitars and thumping percussion are part of the setup, too, and with comical crowd interaction commonplace, you can understand why there’s such a close bond between the band and their fans.

The show was great!

It was a 20-year anniversary tour for their '97 classic 'Let's Face It'. I have to compliment them for not riding the nostalgia card too hard. They played the album and then they played countless other hits.

HIGHLY recommend seeing the Bosstones anytime you get the chance.

SiriusXM will present The Mighty Mighty Bosstones on tour with Los Kung Fu Monkeys & Buster Shuffle .

What started in the hardcore punk scene with influences such as AC/DC, Social Distortion & Clash, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones found their stride in the world of Ska during the early ’90s. A genre that was not so popular to the mainstream at the time, the band was able to break through and find worldwide success with their fifth  studio album, Let’s Face It.

Released in 1997, the first single off that album, The Impression That I Get, reached No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart and is still played today on SiriusXM channels like ’90s on 9 and Lithium.

With nine albums to date, the band announced that a tenth album is on the way, called While We’re At It, due to be released this year.

The two month SiriusXM tour will hit cities such as Portland, San Diego, Houston, Detroit, Chicago and many more! Tickets will be on sale Friday, April 6. Click here for more information.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Break Up, Will Ska No More

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones will ska no more: The Boston band announced Thursday that, after nearly five decades together, they are breaking up.

“After decades of brotherhood, touring the world and making great records together, we have decided to no longer continue on as a band,” the Mighty Mighty Bosstones said in a statement on social media.

“Above all, we want to express our sincere gratitude to every single one of you who have supported us. We could not have done any of it without you.”

The band did not reveal the cause of their sudden breakup. As their Facebook page notes, they were scheduled to perform at the Slam Dunk Festival this coming June, but the split comes just days after it was revealed that a song that promoted Robert F. Kennedy’s anti-vax rally in Washington, D.C. was apparently produced by Bosstones frontman Dicky Barrett, according to the song’s credits.

The Far Right Is Crawling With Eclipse Conspiracy Theories

Ted cruz is getting nervous he’s going to lose his senate seat, willie nelson thinks queer message in orville peck video is 'more important than ever', jojo siwa is all grown up on new single 'karma'.

As Rolling Stone reported this weekend , Graham Nash threatened legal action against RFK Jr. for the unauthorized interpolation of his 1971 song “Chicago (We Can Change the World)” in the RFK Jr.-written song “Heart of Freedom,” which was used to promote the Sunday march.

A rep for Mighty Mighty Bosstones did not respond to Rolling Stone ’s initial request for comment — following news of Barrett’s apparent role in “Heart of Freedom” — but said on Friday that “this is a really private matter that is no one’s business except ours.”

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones had performed together since 1983, with singer Barrett, saxophonist Tim “Johnny Vegas” Burton and bassist Joe Gittleman serving as band members for the entire duration of the Bosstones.

Beginning with 1989’s  Devil’s Night Out , the Boston group released 11 albums of ska punk, and notably appeared in the 1995 film  Clueless (and its hit soundtrack) to perform their hit song “Where’d You Go?” In 1997, amid a ska revival sparked in part by the Bosstones, the band scored a Top 20 hit with their most enduring track, “The Impression That I Get.” The Bosstones released their swan song, When God Was Great , in 2021.

The Mighty Mighty BosstoneS’ Dicky Barrett Discusses New Band, The Defiant

In 2023, the Defiant made their debut with If We're Really Being Honest , a 12-track collection of fresh, catchy punk rock recorded by a 90s supergroup of sorts: drummer Pete Parada of the Offspring , bassist Johnny Rioux of Street Dogs , guitarist Greg Camp of Smash Mouth , multi-instrumentalist Joey LaRocca of the Briggs and frontman Dicky Barrett of the Mighty Mighty BosstoneS .

"You go, 'Hey, someday we should get together and make music,'" Barrett told Chuck Armstrong on Loudwire Nights Tuesday night (March 5) about wanting to record with these guys over the years.

"You put that plan in the back of your head and then when I decided that I wanted to try something else and see if I could write with other people or see if I could create an album that said the things I wanted to say right now, I thought of calling Greg. Me and Greg talked and we said, 'Hey, let's try our hand at this.'"

Barrett admitted that it didn't take long for him to realize that he and Camp were creating something that he would be proud to release.

"It just sounded good to us and the thoughts were cohesive and the message seemed clear and the music seemed great," Barrett explained about why he was convinced to keep pursuing this new music with Camp and the rest of the band.

"The stars aligned and everything sort of fell into place."

As Barrett celebrated the music of the Defiant — music that he said is some of the best music he's ever created — he was also very open about his time with the BosstoneS.

"I never really felt inhibited," he said about his time with the legendary ska punk band that he helped form in the early-'80s. "To be completely fair to the BosstoneS, they never really policed the things I was saying and, you know, 99.9-percent of the time, we were always on board with the same things."

While it may seem like the Defiant is a new vehicle for Barrett to express himself in a different way, he reiterated to Chuck that he always felt like he could be open with the music the BosstoneS were making.

"I never shied away from issues or subjects that I felt needed to be addressed or that I wanted to sing about," he said.

"As the primary lyricist of the Mighty Mighty BosstoneS, I had a forum. I had a place where I could say what I wanted to say, but this is sort of a different time and a different era. Did the BosstoneS all agree with me? No, I would say no, and I think the fact that we're currently not together kind of bears witness to that."

As Barrett said those words, he was quick to also show gratitude for his partners in the Defiant.

"There's justification that I've found in writing and being with these guys and making music as I'm currently making it."

What Else Did Dicky Barrett Discuss on Loudwire Nights ?

  • What the songwriting process is like for the Defiant
  • Why the Defiant is more than just a hobby or a one-off thing
  • Why he feels like he's getting a second shot at music even though he knows he was given a pretty big chance the first time around with the BosstoneS
