Heading to Marlay Park's summer concert series? Here's everything you need to know

marathon sports travel marlay park

In case you haven't noticed the sight of the sun occasionally peeking through the clouds (and the rain) means the summer's festival season is underway.

The coming weeks are choc full of gigs to suit all tastes that are begging to be enjoyed, drink in hand on a patch of grass in the sunshine (fingers crossed), and with a stellar lineup for its outdoor series Marlay Park might just be coming up trumps.

The summer series at the Rathfarnham venue kicks off with rockers Pearl Jam taking to the stage followed by Green Day, Kings of Leon, Pearl Jam, and Hozier - and not forgetting Longitude Festival.

With that in mind here's everything you need to know from who's playing to how to get home:

The 2024 summer series will unfold as follows:

Saturday 22 June - Pearl Jam, supported by Richard Ashcroft and The Murder Capital

Thursday 27 June - Green Day, supported by Nothing But Thieves and Maid of Ace

Saturday 29 June/Sunday 30 June - Longitude Festival: Central Cee/ Doja Cat and other acts including Becky Hill and Jazzy.

Friday 5 July - Hozier, Brittany Howard, Lord Huron, Ye Vagabonds

Saturday 6 July - Kings of Leon, The War on Drugs

Getting there and home

A shuttle service will travel from Earslford Terrace in Dublin City Centre to Marlay Park and there is also a Dundrum Luas Shuttle service with Marathon Travel which begins at 2pm.

Return buses start filling from 22.30 with the last bus departing at 23.30. Tickets are from €20 (early bird prices)

For those travelling by Luas, the last Luas from Balally Luas Stop (approx. 25 minute walk from the venue) heading into the city centre departs at 00.23 Monday - Friday and Saturday, and 23.23 on Sundays.

The last tram heading southbound towards Brides Glen (away from the city centre) departs at 00.57 Monday -Friday, and Saturday, and at 23.57 on Sundays.

After widespread reports of festival goers being stranded at the venue in previous years, those attending this year's concerts are being urged to plan their route home in advance.

Along with being encouraged to consider your way home, concert goers have also been cautioned to allow plenty of time to get into Marlay Park. In 2022 Green Day fans were outraged at the long wait to get into the concert with the queues reportedly stretched back 1.5 km.

Festival organiser Melvin Benn told FM104 : The key is to leave plenty of time and to make sure you are there for who you want to see... We normally open at least two to three hours before the first support act comes on so have a look on www.EVENTZ.ie and you'll see all the information you need available .'

Safety is paramount for the summer series of concerts and there will be around 200-220 guards present at the gigs.

'They will comprise mainly of uniform Garda but they'll also be supported by specialist units like our drugs units, our trained personnel in the child protection services, child protection officers, particularly for Longitude,' says Superintendent Bróna O'Reilly.

Attendees will be searched on entry and additional security checks may take place inside. Gardai reserve the right to refuse entry to anyone deemed intoxicated or under the influence of drugs, and a strict no alcohol policy will be implemented on all transport and private buses travelling to Marlay Park.

Yes, You Can Run a Marathon

Preparing to run 26.2 miles can be daunting. Here’s how to structure four months of training.

A man and a woman run down the sidewalk of a tree lined street.

By Amanda Loudin

When you cross the finish line of your first marathon, the high can make it easy to forget about everything you’ve put your mind and body through to get there. There’s no question that covering 26.2 miles is an impressive feat of endurance and athleticism, but it can be an attainable goal for most runners with the right preparation.

Most marathoners train for about 16 weeks before the big day. Here, we’ve put together a four-part guide that breaks the cycle into four-week segments, each with a specific training focus. It also includes tips on nutrition, speed workouts, strength training and mental preparation.

To start this plan, you should feel comfortable running about 25 miles per week, including a regular long run of at least 10 miles. If you’re not there yet, consider running a shorter race this year and gradually working your way up to that mileage before starting a 16-week program. (If you have a marathon on the calendar for this fall, your training should already be underway. But you can still use this guide to check on your progress so far, and to take advantage of the advice for month two and beyond, depending on your race date.)

Marathon training can feel like a slog at times, and it helps to make peace with the long commitment. “Training isn’t sexy and it doesn’t deliver immediate gratification,” said Jessica Hofheimer, a running coach in North Carolina who works with runners of all levels. But if you stick with it and enjoy the process, nothing beats the reward of crossing the finish line.

Month One: Build a foundation

The first four weeks of marathon training (beginning about four months before race day) focus on building the base of strength and endurance you’ll tap into throughout the training cycle. Your mileage will be relatively low, and your pace for most runs should generally feel easy.

Aim to run four or five times a week, including a long run of at least 10 miles. Supplement your running with strength training at least twice a week, which will help you avoid injury as you increase your mileage.

Make sure you’re eating enough to support your training, which is probably more than you’re used to — that means simple carbs before a run, then protein and carbs to recover afterward. And start prepping your mind for the long training block ahead: It can help to visualize yourself crossing the finish line and soaking it all in.

Month Two: Increase the miles, find your pace

The second month of marathon training is more structured: Your weekly mileage will start to grow, and if you’re trying to hit a particular goal time, you should start incorporating some miles at that pace during some of your runs.

You’ll also start extending your long run by a mile or two each week, with the goal of hitting 15 miles at the end of the month. (If you’re training for a hilly race, find routes that will help you prepare for the terrain.)

As you run more, nutrition becomes even more important. Make sure you’re eating enough calories to sustain your mileage and recover from your long runs, and begin testing your strategy for race-day fueling. What works for one person may not work for you, so use this time to dial in your own approach.

Remind yourself that not every run will go according to plan. But you’re already approaching the halfway mark of the training cycle — keep track of your successes and reflect on them as race day gets closer.

Month Three: Here come the 20-milers

By now, your body should be getting used to the marathon training rhythm. During this block, you’ll take on your highest mileage: It’s time to add in the 20-mile long runs , which will help prepare your body for the fatigue of the marathon’s final miles.

If you’re focused on a time goal, you’ll also increase the intensity of some of your runs by spending more time running at goal race pace.

As your mileage builds, it’s normal to wonder where your motivation went. But there’s also a real sense of accomplishment that comes with checking off each 20-mile run, especially if this is your first marathon. Now is a good time to remind yourself why you’re training and pay special attention to sleep and smart nutrition.

Month Four: Time to taper

This is the homestretch : Typically, that means one last 20-miler before you get to cut back, or “taper,” for about three weeks.

Use your final 20-miler as a dress rehearsal for race day: clothes, shoes, food, hydration and maybe some miles at your goal pace. Experienced marathoners and coaches will tell you: “nothing new on race day.”

Even though you’re running less, you shouldn’t cut down on calories. Keep eating well to help your body recover. And don’t skimp on sleep. You’ll probably get a case of nerves as the marathon approaches. Trust in your preparation and take the time to look back over your training logs as a reminder of all the work you’ve put in. When everything falls into place, the race becomes a celebration of your effort.

Boston’s J’ouvert parade to take different route after violence last year

Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox speaks to the press on Aug. 23, 2023 after several people were shot and wounded on Talbot Avenue in Dorchester amid large crowds celebrating J’ouvert.

The annual J’ouvert celebration in Boston this weekend will travel through Franklin Park, city officials announced Friday, altering the parade route that follows a burst of violence that marred last year’s event.

The parade, which steps off at 6 a.m. Saturday, will start near the Shattuck picnic area and travel up Circuit Drive before ending on the other side of the park near the clubhouse, according to the city.

J’ouvert means “daybreak” and follows a night of parties. It precedes the city’s traditional daylong Caribbean Carnival, which features participants marching in colorful, elaborate costumes. The carnival parade begins later at 1 p.m. Saturday at Warren Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, traveling on Warren Street and Blue Hill Avenue to end in the same area as J’ouvert.

Near last year’s J’ouvert celebration, members of two groups exchanged gunfire around 7:45 a.m. on Talbot Avenue, injuring eight and sending crowds scattering .

None of the injuries were life threatening, police said then. But along with two other multiple-victim shootings in the span of a few months, the shooting rocked the community. Four people have been indicted in connection with last year’s J’ouvert shooting, which allegedly included the use of a pistol outfitted with a so-called “Glock switch” that made it fully automatic .

This year’s celebration comes less than a week after five people were shot near the annual Dominican festival — which was also held in Franklin Park, near Circuit Drive, according to police.

In a news conference Friday, Police Commissioner Michael Cox acknowledged recent issues, including the gunfire near last year’s J’ouvert celebration. “We will be there to hold people accountable, but the expectation is nothing will happen” this time, he said.

This year, Talbot Avenue will be closed to vehicles, Cox said. He said the goal in moving the event was to get the J’ouvert parade out of the residential area near two housing developments that have been the scenes of violence .

“It keeps it out of areas where there’s a large urban environment,” Cox said.

City Councilor Brian Worrell, who represents neighborhoods near the parade, said a change in the route should not be needed. Rather, “more strict measures, security checkpoint, enforcement along the route and help from the surrounding communities’ officers should be sufficient,” he said in a statement.

The group that organizes the parade did not respond to a request for comment Friday.

As for the all-night parties that typically take place throughout the weekend, Cox said residents should call 911 if gatherings are getting out of control or too loud.

“Please call us. Let us know,” he said. “We’ll come do something about it.”

And as far as “revelers” on ATVs and dirt bikes, and in cars with oversize chests of speakers, “You’re not welcome in the city,” he said.

The commissioner spoke to the media alongside Boston EMS Chief Jim Hooley and other police brass next to a map with information about police deployments planned for Saturday. Boston’s police unions have voiced concerns about staffing levels, saying officers are run ragged in an undermanned department.

Larry Calderone, president of the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association, praised the commissioner for working to move the parade route but said events like this strain the department, causing forced overtime and thin shifts in various precincts.

“We do not have the manpower,” Calderone said in a phone interview Friday. “We’re in a crisis of manpower.”

Cox acknowledged that he’d like staffing levels to be higher, but said it’s a problem that plagues most large police departments.

“We certainly have sufficient number of people” to work the event, he said, noting that other occasions, such as the Boston Marathon, are larger.

Cox stressed this year’s particularly low statistics around violent crime in Boston, which has seen crime generally decline for decades. So far this year, homicides are down as are reductions in the number of overall shooting victims, according to the most recent police data.
