LAMY safari

The LAMY safari is one of the most popular pens of all time , famed for its comfortable ergonomic grip, affordability, reliability and Bauhaus styling. Originally launched in 1980 as a children's handwriting pen and recommended by schools, the Safari is now enjoyed by all. Made from sturdy ABS plastic, it is available in bright colours and fashionable limited editions (which become collector's items). The fountain pen has an inexpensive easy change nib, from extra fine to broad and left handed.

LAMY safari

The safari is the classic LAMY design, and remains one of the best value ranges of quality pens around. Tough ABS plastic construction with strong wire pocket clips. Available as fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint and mechanical pencil. The safari is robust enough to be popular in school, yet the high quality and excellent writing characteristics appeal to many experienced fountain pen users and collectors. Regular special edition colours, each available for a limited time, add to the pen's appeal to collectors.

ABS plastic is the same material LEGO bricks are made from, and we all know they are pretty hard to damage - especially by stepping on them! It's a great material for pens, as it can be brightly coloured, and is tough and highly impact-resistant. The combination of styling and toughness, along with replaceable nibs and reliability has made the safari popular with children and adults, and they can fit in anywhere from schools to business meetings. The fact that you can change nibs can also be really handy if your tastes change and you decide you want something broader or finer - just buy the new nib, slide the old one off, and slide the new one on. If the old one doesn't pull off easily, a bit of sticky tape across the top gives you a good grip. Push the new one on by the sides, not the tip. The special editions aren't quite like the fancy numbered limited editions many high-end pens are available with, but they are only available for a limited time, and can become quite sought-after later on. Some of the rare early editions can sell for hundreds of pounds to really keen collectors, but don't expect the same to happen with current editions! It's quite possible they'll be worth a bit more than you paid in a few years if it was kept pristine, but then you'd have missed out on years of use of a really nice pen. While the range is mainly known for the fountain pens, there are nice quality rollerballs, ballpoints and mechanical pencils, too, with the same brightly-coloured, tough bodies.

I started becoming interested in Fountain Pens a few years ago; and had a brief experience; and then life got busy and I ran out of ink, and well, I put it aside.

Recently, I have jumped back in (as many of you can attest by my annoying post on this site).

I have written with my Preppy a good bit the last two weeks and actually like it.

Last night I rinsed the nib of my lami safari (orange) and put some ink in (fine point nib, and ink cartridge until my ink spots samples arrive); all i can say is WOW. I love this pen. I am so glad I have a Lamy Al Star at home to also put in the rotation.

so thank you guys for being here, to understand; because frankly my girlfriend does not really. ha ha

but I have a question; is there a pen that writes with the easy of the Lamy/Preppy but is bigger?

I tore a ligament in my right thumb quote a few years back and it is more comfy to write with something a little fatter.

so far I have considered a Ranga handmade pen (they look amazing and they are big); but how do they write?

Ranga? TWSBI 540 (or 700 vac)? Sheaffer No Nonsense? Those are the 3 I have investigated;

There's a nice fat bamboo pen made by Sailor ,I think? It goes for about $1500-2000 if u can find one...lol. Seriously , I've seen all kinds of built up sections. You might even be able to modify your Lamy's section, by keeping it's original shape, and tacking a small something of material onto the section/grip to alleviate your existing issue with thiner pens. NTITAI, a Michael's Fat Boy is your get out of jail free card. It's big...ger...for...sure. A good friend of mine loves his. He injured his hand playing baseball...same problem. No affiliations.

The lamy Nexx has a slightly larger grip than the al-star. And the grip has a rubber type finish instead of a slick surface.

If you want to modify a pen as snowleopard suggested, I recently ran into a material that seems excellent for the job. Sugru www.sugru.com [edit: but if you modify the grip on most pens the cap would no longer fit. The only exception I am aware of is the pilot plumix]

How about a Rotring? The Skynn has a huge grip.

ETA: Or, if you're wanting it bigger at the top, a couple of the Cores are conical. Here's a lineup of the Cores:
