U.S. Bank FlexPerks Program Review

With select U.S. Bank cards, this flex perks program could provide you with a variety of rewards redemption options.

U.S. Bank FlexPerks is the rewards program for four of U.S. Bank’s credit cards. The U.S. Bank FlexPerks program offers both consumers and businesses good rewards-earning potential and redemption value if you book travel regularly. In addition to redeeming FlexPoints for travel, you can use your FlexPerks rewards for statement credits, cash back, gift cards and merchandise.

U.S. Bank FlexPerks Rewards Cards

U.S. Bank offers four credit cards that offer FlexPerks rewards in the form of FlexPoints with three personal credit cards and one business credit card.

  • U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Gold American Express® Card
  • U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Select+ American Express® Card

Best Features

FlexPoints can be redeemed on any FlexPerks card at 1.5 cents per FlexPoint value when booking travel directly through U.S. Bank. This premium redemption option is even available on FlexPerks cards that don't have an annual fee.

While each FlexPerks card earns FlexPoints at different rates, the category bonuses offered on select U.S. Bank FlexPerks cards include everyday purchase categories like gas, grocery stores and cellphone service.

The higher 1.5 cent per FlexPoint value for travel redemptions is a nice benefit, but you must book through U.S. Bank's travel portal. This can limit your redemption options. Additionally, travel is the only redemption option that values FlexPoints above 1 cent a piece. If you don't travel often, you'll be stuck redeeming FlexPoints at the lower 1 cent per point value.

U.S. Bank imposes minimum redemption amounts for statement credits and cash back. Statement credits require a minimum of 2,500 FlexPoints for a $25 statement credit and cash back requires a minimum of 5,000 FlexPoints for $50 cash back. Gift card redemptions also start at 5,000 FlexPoints for a $50 gift card.

Your FlexPoints won't last forever, either. They expire at the end of the calendar quarter that is five years after the date they were earned.

Earning Rewards

U.S. Bank FlexPerks cards earn FlexPoints at different rates:

  • U.S. Bank FlexPerks Gold American Express Card: Earn five points per dollar on prepaid hotels and car rental bookings made directly through the FlexPerks Rewards Center, three points per dollar at restaurants, two points per dollar for airline tickets and gas and one point per dollar on all other purchases. You can earn 30,000 bonus points when you spend $2,000 on purchases within the first four months.
  • U.S. Bank FlexPerks Select+ American Express Card: Earn one point per dollar spent on all purchases. You can earn 10,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 on purchases within the first four months.

Rewards Redemption Options

U.S. Bank FlexPerks cardholders can use their points to:

  • Book travel such as flights, hotel stays and car rentals
  • Purchase merchandise
  • Purchase gift cards
  • Get a statement credit
  • Get cash back
  • Purchases at participating retailers

Rewards Redemption Value

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks program's points have different values depending on your redemption option:

  • Travel categories such as air travel, hotel stays and car rentals: 1.5 cents per point
  • Cash back: 1 cent per point
  • Statement credit: 1 cent per point
  • Gift cards: 1 cent per point
  • Merchandise: varies based on item purchased

In order to redeem FlexPoints for travel categories such as air travel, hotel stays and car rentals, you need to book directly through U.S. Bank to get the higher 1.5 cents per FlexPoint value.

Transferring FlexPoints

U.S. Bank FlexPerk's FlexPoints cannot be transferred to other airline or hotel loyalty programs. However, they can be transferred to another FlexPerks FlexPoints account for free.

U.S. Bank FlexPerks is best for:

  • People who travel frequently.
  • People who make purchases in a card's bonus points categories.
  • Cardholders who can pay off their balance in full each month.

Update:   One or more card offers in this post are no longer available.  Check our  Hot Deals  for the latest offers.

U.S. Bank is in the midst of revamping its FlexPerks rewards program. And many of the travel credit cards that were part of the program are no longer available to new applicants, including the U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Travel Rewards Visa Signature Card. Rumor has it that U.S. Bank has plans to introduce new cards to replace the ones it’s axed. Hopefully the intro offers can compete with the  travel card bonuses and perks available through programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards .

If you currently are a U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards cardholder nothing is changing for you. You can continue using the card as normal, which is nice because it is one of the few cards that offers bonus points on charitable contributions, where you can earn 2x FlexPoints per dollar. You can also earn bonus points for purchases with airlines, gas stations, grocery stores and cell phone providers.

Let’s take a look at what else comes with the card and alternative for those who don’t have it.

Current bonus.

This card is not available to new applicants.

Benefits and perks

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks card earns 2x points per dollar in whichever of the following categories you spend the most in during a monthly billing cycle:

  • Gas stations
  • Grocery stores

Aside from these three bonus categories, this card earns 2x points on spending with cellular service providers and charitable organizations. According to U.S. Bank, purchases with any merchant that classifies itself as a “charitable or social service organization” are eligible for 2x points. Other cards such as The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express allow you to earn 2x points on all purchases (up to $50,000 in spending per year, then 1x), but this is the only card I know that specifically offers bonus points on purchases with charitable organizations.

Purchases outside of these bonus categories will earn one point per dollar and there is no limit to the number of points you can earn. The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card has no foreign transaction fees , so you can earn points anywhere in the world Visa credit cards are accepted without an additional fee.

One nice feature of the card is a $25 reimbursement toward fees for checked bags or inflight food and drink purchases when you redeem your points for airfare through the U.S. Bank Travel Portal. Here’s how the perk works:

  • Redeem a minimum of 10,000 FlexPoints per round-trip flight through the U.S. Bank Travel Portal
  • Use your U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card to pay for checked bags or inflight food or beverages
  • Call the U.S. Bank phone number printed on the back of your card and request a reimbursement for up to $25 within 90 days of the purchase
  • This benefits is not available if you redeem points using U.S. Bank’s Real-Time Rewards, you must redeem online or over the phone

flexperks travel rewards phone number

According the U.S. Bank website, you will receive a statement credit within 4-6 weeks of requesting the reimbursement and you are eligible for the statement credit for each round-trip flight booking you make with FlexPoints through the U.S. Bank Travel Portal. That means you can receive a lot of $25 statement credits if you regularly book award travel.

Visa Signature Card perks

As a Visa Signature card, the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card comes with the standard Visa Signature benefits:

  • Luxury Hotel Collection – Best rate guarantees, automatic upgrades when available, free internet, complimentary breakfast, late check out and more at select hotels
  • Visa Signature Concierge – Complimentary 24/7 concierge service that can assist you with booking travel, dining reservations, sports tickets and more
  • Purchase security – Covers items purchased with the card from damage or theft for 90 days after purchase (up to $10,000 per purchases and $50,000 per year)
  • Warranty management service – When you register your items with this service, Visa will keep the terms of the warranty on file for you and double the length of the manufacturer’s standard warranty period on eligible warranties of three years or less
  • Rental car collision damage waiver – Provides reimbursement for damage from collision or theft up to the actual cash value of most rental vehicles (coverage is secondary in your country of residence)
  • Travel and emergency assistance services – Complimentary 24/7 service to help you find medical, legal and transportation assistance
  • Travel accident insurance –Coverage for you and your family members for certain accidents that occur while traveling

How to redeem points

U.S. Bank FlexPoints are worth one cent per point when used as a statement credit or for gift cards. The most valuable way to use FlexPoints is for airfare, hotels and car rentals booked through the U.S. Bank Travel Portal, where your points are worth 50% more (1.5 cents per point).

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Rewards card does not allow you to transfer points to airlines or hotels like some other cards, but the 50% bonus for travel booked through the U.S. Bank Travel Portal is a huge perk, especially when the cash cost for airlines or hotels is better than award rates. For example, an MMS contributor stayed at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego . As a Hyatt Category 4 hotel, one night in a standard room costs 15,000 Hyatt points, but the hotel had cash rates for $149 per night. Instead of using up 15,000 valuable Hyatt points , he booked the stay through the travel portal for only 9,934 points ($149 / 1.5 cents per point). This saved him a ton of points and allowed him to keep his Hyatt points for a better deal.

Using your FlexPoints for travel booked through the U.S. Bank Travel Portal is by far the best value, because your points are immediately worth 50% more. But if you don’t have any travel plans, there are a number of other ways to use your points. Through the U.S. Bank website, you can use FlexPoints for purchases with certain major online stores like Apple , Sony , Dell and North Face . You can also redeem FlexPoints for gift cards with many major retailers, including Amazon , Macy’s , Best Buy and Starbucks . When redeeming for purchases online or gift cards, FlexPoints are worth one cent per point. So the 25,000-point enrollment bonus would be worth $250 toward online purchases or gift cards.

Similarly, FlexPoints can be used as cash back or a statement credit. To do this, you simply log in to your U.S. Bank account and redeem points for cash back. U.S. Bank also has a program called Real-Time Mobile Rewards, which allows you to instantly redeem FlexPoints as a statement credit.

Here’s how it works, if you register for the Real Time Mobile Rewards program, you will receive a text message each time you use your eligible card for a purchase. The text will ask if you would like to redeem FlexPoints to offset your purchase as a statement credit. By replying “Redeem,” your FlexPoints will instantly be used toward a statement credit to cover your purchase.

When redeeming for cash back or to offset non-travel purchases through Real Time Mobile Rewards, your FlexPoints are worth one cent per point. In the past Real Time Rewards travel redemptions had a value of 1.5 cents per point, but there are reports that this has been reduced to only one cent per point for travel purchases made with this card. You’ll have to meet a minimum redemption amount for purchases to qualify for Real Time Mobile Rewards. You can adjust this amount online, but you can’t set the minimum amount below $250 for car rentals or $500 for lodging.

According to U.S. Bank, FlexPoints expire five years from the end of the calendar quarter in which they were earned and your account must be open and in good standing to earn and redeem FlexPoints and benefits.

Is the US Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards card worth it?

The card has a $49 annual fee, which is one of the smaller annual fees you’ll find on a rewards credit card . If you have a lot of FlexPerks points that you redeem for airfare, the cards $25 credit for baggage fees or inflight purchases can make it worth keeping. But if you have an airline credit card that comes with free checked bags it could be a redundant benefit.

The other benefit of the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Card that stands out is the 2x earning rate on purchases with charitable organizations. While your credit card points probably shouldn’t drive your charitable contributions, this is a great way to earn more points on giving that you were already making. But, there are few situations where this perk alone makes the card a long-term keeper.

Pairing the US Bank FlexPerks Rewards with other cards

This will mainly appeal to people looking for a travel rewards card with a low annual fee. If you don’t mind paying a slightly higher annual fee, there are a number of cards with bigger perks and more earning potential. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card has an annual fee of $95, but earns 2x points on travel and 3x points on dining purchases and you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to a number of airline and hotel partners .

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® has an annual fee of $550, but comes with up to $300 in annual travel credit, earns 3x points on dining and travel (excluding $300 travel credit) and also earns Chase Ultimate Rewards  points that you can transfer to airline and hotel partners.

Or if you want a credit card without annual fees , the Citi® Double Cash Card earns 2% cash back; 1% back when you purchase and another 1% back as you pay. You can’t beat that for your everyday purchases .

The   information for the Citi Double Cash Card has been collected independently by Million Mile Secrets. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Bottom line

You can no longer apply for the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards card, but if you currently have the card you can continue using it. Nothing is changing and you’ll still get your $25 credit (for round-trip flights booked with FlexPoints) and will still earn 2x points on purchases with charitable organizations and cellular service providers. You’ll also earn 2x points on your highest spending bonus category (airfare, gas station or grocery store purchases) each month.

U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature card review

U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature card review

Written by: Kelly Dilworth

In a Nutshell:

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature card is a good value for cardholders who want to redeem points for travel purchases, but its other redemption options aren’t nearly as lucrative.  This offer is no longer available on our site.

Other Notable Features: $25 airline fee allowance, no foreign transaction fees, travel accident insurance, emergency assistance, baggage insurance, purchase protection, concierge service, ID theft expense reimbursement, Hideaway travel club, travel and hotel discounts

For just $49 a year, the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards card offers a high redemption value for travel purchases, as well as a modest airline fee credit toward rewards-funded flights and a number of other premium perks. All of this makes it one of our favorite pieces of plastic for budget travelers. It offers some of the most valuable rewards at a lower price than comparable travel cards , but its point value is not as high on cash back redemptions.

Great airfare redemption value

This is a card for aspiring travelers who are focused on using points for flights, hotel stays and car rentals. For a card that costs less than half of what many comparable cards charge, the redemption value on these purchases is very good. When you use points for a flight, hotel stay or car rental, they are worth around 1.5 cents per point – the same value as the pricey Chase Sapphire Reserve . U.S. Bank also doesn’t impose any blackout dates on flights, making the rewards even more valuable for cardholders who value a choice about when they fly.

When you use your points for anything else, however, they are only worth around 1 cent per point. This is still average among rewards cards, but makes it a less valuable option for cardholders who want to choose another redemption.

Competitive sign-up bonus

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards card offers a generous sign-up bonus that puts a free domestic flight in easy reach for modest spenders, making it a good choice for people who do most of their shopping on just one card. If you spend an average of just $500 a month ($2,000 total) in the card’s first four months, you’ll receive 25,000 bonus points, worth around $375 in airfare.

Good value for the money

The FlexPerks Travel Rewards card also offers a number of premium travel perks that aren’t commonly found on credit cards with such a low annual fee. For example, cardholders who redeem points for air travel are awarded a $25 airline allowance for incidental fees and in-flight purchases. Cardholders are also given VIP event and entertainment access, concierge access and discounts on luxury hotels. One especially nice travel perk is the lack of a foreign transaction fee — you can freely use the card in foreign countries without racking up extra charges.

Bonus points for charitable giving

One of the most unusual features of the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa is its altruistic rewards program. U.S. Bank encourages cardholders to be good Samaritans by granting two bonus points for every dollar spent on charitable donations. The card also offers double bonus points on more routine purchases, such as groceries, gas, dining and cellphone payments.

Why get the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature card?

  • You want to earn free airfare but don’t want to pay a high annual fee.
  • You regularly use your credit card to pay for groceries, gas and cellphone expenses.
  • You spend enough money each month to claim the card’s generous sign-up bonus.
  • You don’t mind spending a little time looking for a flight that maximizes your rewards spending.

How to use the U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa Signature card:

  • Save your points and only redeem them for travel purchases. You’ll get less value from your spending if you redeem your points for other options, such as a statement credit.
  • Use your card aggressively for the first four months so you can cash in on a free domestic flight.

If you don’t like the hassle of dealing with complicated loyalty programs, U.S. Bank’s versatile FlexPoints will be a breath of fresh air. These easy-to-redeem rewards make it a little easier to get an excellent value, even when flying economy with a family in tow. Here’s what you should consider before applying for a U.S. Bank FlexPerks card.

U.S. Bank FlexPoints: The basics

Through U.S. Bank's online marketplace, you can use FlexPoints to book flights on more than 150 airlines with no blackout dates or redeem rewards for hotel stays and merchandise.

As is the case with many rewards currencies, the value of U.S. Bank FlexPoints depends on how they’re redeemed. At best, you can get up to 2 cents of value from each point when you cash them in for plane tickets. On the lower end, purchasing inexpensive merchandise with points may yield less than 1 cent per point. You can't transfer points to loyalty programs, and generally, you won't get more than 2 cents of value per point.

Unlike some loyalty programs, U.S. Bank lets you book airline tickets under any individual's name, as long as the cardholder is making the reservation. This can make family travel a little easier – and more affordable.

How to redeem FlexPoints

U.S. Bank offers lots of opportunities for redemption, but some are more generous than others. Here are the ones that offer the best – and worst – values:

Good redemption options

Airline tickets purchased with points can offer high value, depending on their list price. That's because rather than offering fixed-rate redemptions for air travel, U.S. Bank assigns a certain points cost to each airline ticket price range. For instance, if a plane ticket costs between $400 and $600, you'll need 30,000 points to purchase it with rewards.

That’s great news if your ticket were worth $599; you’d get a redemption value of about 2 cents per point, which is outstanding by industry standards. But if your ticket’s worth $401, you’d just get a value of about 1.3 cents and miss out on a lot of value.

U.S. Bank also assigns a certain points cost to hotel stays in each price range. Whether you wanted a $151 room or a $299 room, for instance, it would still cost you 20,000 points. If you veer toward the higher prices within the range, you’d be able to squeeze about 1.5 cents of value from each point. The lower-priced options, though, would offer much less value. If you bundle airfare and hotels, you'll also get a maximum of 1.5 cents out of each point.

Check out U.S. Bank’s airfare chart to make sure you’re getting the most for your money. The other travel cost redemption charts aren't currently available unless you sign in to your U.S. Bank account, but they're included in the methodology section for reference. U.S. Bank’s travel site is powered by the air and hotel rate aggregator Travelocity , so you can cross-check the prices and make sure you’re getting a good deal.

Bad redemption options

If you manage to find a cheap plane ticket – say, one that costs $100 – you’d probably be better off just paying with cash or credit. Generally, you can’t get a plane ticket though U.S. Bank for less than 20,000 points each. So if you were to cash in points for that particular purchase, you’d likely get a meager value of 0.5 cents per point, sinking the original value.

The same goes for hotels, merchandise, gift certificates and statement credit redemptions. If you’re staying at a hotel that only charges you $75, you’d only be getting a value of about 0.38 cents a point. Redeeming rewards for statement credits or gift certificates yields 1 cent per point, and using points for merchandise gives you slightly less value.

The takeaway is simple: Save your rewards for more expensive travel costs.

FlexPoints expire five years from the date they’re earned.

Your FlexPoints will automatically be redeemed in the order they were earned.

If your account isn’t it good standing, you may not be able to redeem your points.

If your account is closed, your points will be forfeited.

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Select+ American Express® Card has a sign-up bonus that's easy to qualify for: Earn 10,000 bonus FlexPoints after you spend $1,000 in Net Purchases within the first four months of account opening. That's worth $200, assuming you can get 2 cents of value out of each point.

The $0 , making it a relatively low-maintenance card – but it's not the best card to earn a lot of rewards with. You'll only get 1.5 FlexPoints per dollar spent on charitable donations and 1 FlexPoint per $2 spent on other eligible purchases. Assuming you didn't make charitable donations with your card and already used your sign-up bonus, you'd have to put $40,000 on this card before you could purchase an airline ticket with rewards. This might make it impossible for some frugal spenders to make the most of their points before they expire.

Unlike the U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Travel Rewards® Card , though, you won't need excellent credit to qualify for this offer. If you want a relatively straight-forward rewards card and have good (but not excellent) credit, this may be a decent fit.

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Travel Rewards® Card comes with a big sign-up bonus: Earn 25,000 enrollment FlexPoints worth $375 on airfare, hotel stays, car rentals and more. Just spend $2,000 in eligible Net Purchases on your card within the first four months of account opening. If you could redeem these points for 2 cents apiece, this could be worth $400.

You’ll also get 3 points per dollar spent on charitable donations, 2 points per dollar spent on most cellphone expenses, 2 points per dollar spent on groceries, gas or airfare (whatever you spend the most on in a given month) and 1 point per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases. That's a lot of earning power for one card.

With an annual fee of $49 , this card also offers a high ongoing value. Bonuses aside, if you earned 2 points on all your purchases and got 2 cents of value out of each one, you'd break even after putting $1,225 in purchases on your card, a pretty manageable threshold for most folks. If you want points that won't expire, or if you're trying to transfer points or gain a higher membership status with a certain airline or hotel chain, this might not be the right choice for you. But if you're looking for long-term value, this could be a fine option.

As of March 14, 2015, gift cards started at 1,000 points for a $10 certificate. A statement credit of $50 cost 5,000 points.

For merchandise, we looked at two items – one that was expensive, and one that was less expensive. The less expensive one was the Taylor Biggest Loser Body Fat Scale, listed at $39.95 on Amazon; it cost 5,100 points through U.S. Bank (a value of 0.77 cents per point). On the high end, we looked at the Sony 4K camcorder, listed at $1,698 on Amazon. On U.S. Bank, it cost 203,500 points, giving a value of about 0.83 cents a point.
