This early Courtney Pine recording (the tenor saxophonist was 22 at the time) features some of the most promising black English jazz musicians of the time, including Pine (who also plays some bass clarinet and soprano), singer Cleveland Watkiss (who often is reminiscent of Bobby McFerrin), vibraphonist Orphy Robinson, and pianist Julian Joseph. While most of these players have not yet lived up to their potential (Pine remains an expert Coltrane imitator), this disc has its share of strong music. Record and Artist Details

It may be hard, in 2023, to gauge the pressure Courtney Pine was under when he made this debut almost 40 years ago in 1986. He was young, gifted and black (and British), and stood at the centre of huge media interest in the new wave of mostly London born jazz musicians of Caribbean heritage. Pine had to deliver.

‘Generation Jazz Warriors’, which included the likes of Gary Crosby, Orphy Robinson, Cleveland Watkiss and Mark Mondesir, were all part of Pine’s studio group and to a certain extent this session was a consolidation of a collective energy as well as the leader’s individuality. The then-21 year-old’s performance on tenor and soprano saxophone and bass clarinet gave a surefire indication of the virtuoso he would become in the 1990s and beyond, while the aforementioned players, as well as the likes of pianist Julian Joseph, all set the bar high.

What catches the ear is the way the ensemble negotiated ‘tradition’, epitomised by Coltrane, Shorter, Blakey et al , upholding the central tenet of swing and occasionally infusing an ‘island’ flavour. Even more impressive was the decision to cover The Real Thing’s soul anthem ‘Children Of The Ghetto’, one of the landmark political statements of the ‘Thatcher years’, which gives centre stage to Susaye Greene, whose voice has immense subtlety as well as intensity.

It was a key validation of the lived experience of West Indians and a startlingly mature use of African-American musical vocabulary. Pine would go on to stir many more rootsy flavours into his artistic mix, to get closer to home. This beautifully-packaged and great-sounding edition on new label Analogue October, was mastered at Gearbox Records and is issued on vinyl for the first time since the 1980s.

English saxophonist Courtney Pine's debut album Journey to the Urge Within very much announced his arrival back in 1986 on the Verve label. It was largely recorded at Angel Studios, Islington, London and in something of a first for a British jazz album at that time it managed to reach #39 in the UK Albums Chart eventually going on and earning a silver disc for selling over 250,000 copies. The tenor sax man was just 22 when he recorded the album alongside some other promising Black English jazz musicians of the day in singer Cleveland Watkiss, vibraphonist Orphy Robinson and keys player Julian Joseph.

Produced by Michael Cuscuna & released in 1986 on Island Records in the UK,  it became the ground zero for the current British Jazz Explosion wave.

The album is widely regarded as a landmark recording in the history of British jazz. Pine, a talented saxophonist and composer, had already established himself as a leading figure in the London jazz scene through his work with bands like the Jazz Warriors.

The album marked Pine’s first solo outing as a bandleader, and it showcased his unique style   of jazz. Featuring a mix of original compositions and covers, including Pine’s take Horace Silver’s “Peace”, Wayne Shorter’s “Dolores” and The Real Thing’s “Children Of The Ghetto”. A rare instance where a cover version supersedes the original, making it it’s own. A haunting tribute to the struggles of black youth in inner-city London. The track features Pine’s saxophone soaring over a driving rhythm section, with lyrics delivered by ex-Supremes singer, Susaye Greene.

The album was a critical and commercial success upon its release, earning Pine widespread acclaim and helping to establish him as one of the most innovative and exciting young musicians on the British jazz scene. The album remains a classic of the genre and a testament to Pine’s creative vision and virtuosity as a performer and composer.

A refreshing reboot of British Jazz that gave rise to and inspiration to so many of today’s contemporary British Jazz artists. Presenting a new roadmap for the British Jazz scene, its DNA flows through the British Jazz scene to this day.

Mastered at Gearbox Records from Universal Music’s Archival Hi Rez Files,* pressed at Optimal on heavyweight audiophile Vinyl & packaged in a deluxe jacket with a Poly-Lined inner sleeve.  Includes a four page insert, with art, technical specs and an all new two-page essay from the Editor of Jazzwise Magazine, Mike Flynn, about the album, its creator and how it inspired a new British Jazz Explosion that’s still being felt today.

Wow, just wow!! I can say without reservation that this pressing is everything and more that I could have hoped for. The care and attention to detail taken in the production of this album is evident long before the needle drops on to the record, just as an audiophile quality product should be. But the thought taken in the production of the sleeve, insert and protective sleeve are as nothing compared to the quality of the recording. The recording is as noise and hiss free as my UHQR Miles Davis album but at a 6th of the price. I don’t know how you’ve done it Craig Crane, but hats off to Analogue October Records first foray into record production. Seriously people, if you haven’t ordered yourself a copy yet, do yourself, your ears and our wonderful local Record store a favour and get yourself a copy today. You definitely won’t regret it. Now, can I have some more please.

Having met Craig before the release and learning the thinking/executing process just made me really excited about the release. And it completely topped all my expectations. From jacket, to packaging, care with presentation and notes. Most important: the sound. It really brings so many more details in a presentation that really transmits the artists’ intent. The sound is wide, captivating, crystal clear and intense. It is one of the top audiophile releases of 2023, and hopefully just the beginning of a sequence of perfectly presented music! Highly recommended

A wonderful release of a classic jazz album, and so much better than the original in every way.

Great packaging perfectly reproduces the original, and includes an excellent booklet written by Mike Flynn of Jazzwise Magazine.

And the album itself surpasses expectations – it’s an equal to any Tone Poet… and that’s high praise indeed.

Really looking forward to hearing what comes next from Analogue October!

The Department Of Music is an independent HiFi shop in West Sussex. We need a selection of vinyl that demonstrates our range of Rega and Linn turntables to their full potential. We had high hopes for Analogue October’s first label release, Courtney Pine’s Journey To The Urge Within. Craig’s meticulous approach to every aspect of this release, from its pressing design and, ultimately, its audiophile reproduction, was evident from our meeting before its release. What is quite incredible is that the reality of this release exceeds our expectations. The quality and attention paid to the packaging and inserts are superb, in fact, at the highest level possible. Now, the showstopper, the quality of this pressing is quite incredible. This album has now become one of the few records that we use for client demonstrations, as it truly demonstrates just how astonishing vinyl can sound. Bravo

So, I had been aware of the expected release of this album for some time, so my expectations had risen as the release date approached. I took the opportunity to fully reacquaint myself with our original copy – yeah, great album. However, when the A.O. version arrived I had (I’d intended use bold / underscored for the word ‘had’, but was unable!) to listen twice consecutively, it was that good. The sound is rich and lush. I’m not a massive fan of vocals but ‘Children Of The Ghetto’ is a fine way to experience the clarity of your system. This is how vinyl should sound, I hope you’ve started a trend.

What a perfect album as the first release from Analogue October Records. This is a celebration of a recording that highlights the vision and musicianship that created this masterpieice of British Jazz and has been given the love and attention that it deserves to reward you with every listen. This release rightfully takes its place to showcase how good vinyl can sound. I cannot wait to hear what is next.
