Dom's Melbourne show at the Forum on the 2nd of Jan was my first time seeing him as I'd been overseas the last couple of times he'd come to Melbourne.

I had high expectations as I'd heard he has an electrifying stage presence - these expectations were far exceeded by the time I left the Forum on Thursday night. I couldn't believe how much raw energy he had on stage, and his interactions with the audience (including him coming into the mosh - with security - and singing for about five minutes) were fantastic. I managed to push my way to get about a metre away from him when he was in the mosh, which was incredible! Everyone was very considerate of Dom during this time which was awesome as everyone appreciated that an artist coming into the pit is an opportunity that most other artists don't allow! The audience reciprocated his efforts - everyone was jumping and screaming throughout the whole set.

Some of the highlights of the night were "Loner", where Dom emphasised that the BHC is a family where everyone can belong - you could tell, as always, that he was being sincere; "Braindead" which was performed with such high energy reminiscent of Arctic Monkeys (who I've seen twice); and "Machine Gun" brought the house down at the end of the encore, with Dom adding on a "f**k Sco-Mo" chant in response to our PM's response, or lack thereof, in regard to the bushfires ravaging our country at the moment!!

Overall, Yungblud has cultivated his own honest, unique persona which is the perfect balance between raw, political punk rock energy and relatable, deep lyrics (eg. Casual Sabotage). This concert was definitely five black hearts (stars) out of five - and I'll be first in line next time he comes back to Melbourne!

My first Yungblud show, and their first in Bristol!! Admittedly we did get there 1h 30m early but ended up spending 2h in the rain without a shelter or coat (mostly our fault but it still wasn’t pleasant). When we got in we warmed up while waiting to get merch. The support wasn’t to my taste but I cheered nonetheless! Dom was wearing a dress which was great, and he played every one of his songs, even a new unreleased one, so that was definitely worth it! Also the crowd was mental, moshing, jumping, screaming non-stop, even singing to the songs in intervals, and that added to the atmosphere.

All in all, exactly what I would expect, crazy, sweaty, and downright mental.

Opening act Arrested Youth is a high energy US band. Singer Ian escaped corporate America to pursue music and we are all better for it! Amazing messages, still selling their own merch. If you like 21 Pilots, you’ll love them.

Yungblud played in a small venue here. He’s extremely high energy, very interactive and also with no fear messages to spread. Extremely personable. Stayed way after the show to meet everyone. (So did Arrested Youth).

“Is everyone soaked? You should be, you’re at a Yungblud show!” Dancing and jumping at its finest.

My dad and i saw him in Orlando this past October, my dad is very hard to please with music and said it was one of the best concerts he’s ever been to. As for me it was the best concert i’ve ever been to. Something about Dom just makes it so special. He is always engaged in the audience and makes sure everyone is safe. When he played polygraph eyes live, i started crying. I hadn’t related to someone’s music that much since Lil Peep. I would highly recommend seeing YungBlud in concert, and i will most definitely be going to another one!

I had the opportunity to see Yungblud live in Den Haag. My expectations were quite high, I heard he gave a hell of a show. My expectations were exceeded. From the first second he walked on stage he managed to get the crowd along and this energy was not lost once during the concert. Enough room for moshpits but if you wanted to stay away from those it was also no problem. I would definitely recommend seeing him live if you have the chance, rarely have I seen such energy and connection with an audience.

A great gig. I think there could have been more warnings for the flashing lights- in case of people with photosensitive epilepsy, or sensory processing issues; related to that having ear plugs available might have been good as well, the gig was amazing, but the noise level that unavoidably that comes with it shouldn't be a barrier for people to enjoy and participate in a gig. All in all a great show, with brilliant energy; that could be improved by increased accessibility.

YUNGBLUUUUUD! So dope! He puts on a FANTASTIC show! He swears a lot but really encourages acceptance and love! Which I think EVERYONE could hear more of. He came into the the middle of the crowd and played one of his songs. It was so cool to feel so close to him. He signed a bunch of merch that was for sale and he also stayed out to say hi to his fans! He's a great guy and I really enjoy watching him do this thing he loves! I'll see him anytime he's on the east coast!

this was genuinely the best show i’ve even been to. the venue was a nice size, it felt intimate and definitely had a vibe. the fans were mental! lots of moshing but you all still looked out for each other. yungblud is such a good performer! he has so much energy and enthusiasm and it was honestly unforgettable. i love him so so much. it was just amazing. would definitely recommend anyone to go to yungblud! oh my gosh thank you so much... can’t wait for november!

yungblud’s brixton show was honestly one of the best shows i have EVER been too! i’ve seen yungblud three times this year (first time- electric ballroom in march and second time at reading festival), and the atmosphere that is created when he is on stage is amazing. I could not recommend him enough if you are someone who loves to jump around and have an amazing time. his music is incredible and he is so inspiring. 100000000000/10 experience. BHC forever

5 Black Hearts. Yungblud at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip was so raw, fresh and alive that I’m reminded why I love live shows. The energy and passion of the band and the fans was palpable. Yungblud is a talented group of creative enigmatic musicians with a bravery and honesty in their lyrics that is truly addictive. They attacking social issues headfirst and have a blast sharing their message. Don’t miss these guys.

ABOUT MARCUS KING

GRAMMY® Award-nominated artist, performer, and songwriter Marcus King was downright destined to play music. By eight-years-old, the fourth generation Greenville, SC native performed alongside pops, grandpa, and his uncles for the first time. Logging thousands of miles on the road as “The Marcus King Band,” he established himself with unparalleled performance prowess and a dynamic live show. During 2020, he linked up with Dan Auerbach [The Black Keys] and cut his solo debut El Dorado, garnering a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best Americana Album.” Beyond praise from NPR, American Songwriter, and more, Rolling Stone christened it “excellent,” and Associated Press went as far as to claim, “El Dorado already stands out as a definite high point of 2020.” In between packing venues on his own, he performed alongside Chris Stapleton, Greta Van Fleet, and Nathanial Rateliff in addition to gracing the bills of Stagecoach and more with one seismic show after the next. Along the way, he caught the attention of Rick Rubin and signed to American Recordings. Plugged into his old man’s dusty amp with a ’59 Les Paul in hand, Marcus set out to make a rock ‘n’ roll record in 2022. He didn’t disguise his ambitions at all. He didn’t hold back. He didn’t think about anything but writing from the gut, shooting from the hip, and playing straight from the heart. Joined by Auerbach, he made the kind of rock ‘n’ roll record that makes arenas and asses shake, and it’s called Young Blood [American Recordings/Republic Records].

Marcus King - Hard Working Man

King stated, “This fall tour is going to be our biggest one YET. It has been a long time in the making, playing some of our favorite venues in the country bringing a FULL night of Rock n Roll, love and laughs! Can’t wait to bring this show to your town.”

King has also dropped a heist movie-themed official music video for new album Young Blood’s first single “Hard Working Man.” The Tarantino inspired clip, which was premiered today with RELIX , stars King as a hard working man just trying to make an honest buck, who gets embroiled in a web of violence, motivated by money and a mysterious love interest.

The video soundtracks King’s red hot guitar playing and soulful singing which have drawn critical acclaim from NPR Music , SPIN , and Rolling Stone , who described the track as one that explodes “with an FM radio chorus, a chunky guitar riff, and enough cowbell to satisfy Christopher Walken.”

King also recently released another Young Blood cut, “Rescue Me.” Regarding the track, King explained, “‘Rescue Me’ cuts a little deeper than the rest for me. This song is a literal cry for help, one of the least metaphorical tracks on the record and a memory that’s difficult to relive each night but is important to remember. This is also one of the first times I collaborated with our good friend, the amazingly talented artist/writer Andrew Gabbard.”

The forthcoming album, Young Blood , was produced by Dan Auerbach and will be released August 26 on Rick Rubin’s American Records and Republic Records.

Artist Info

Yungblud can’t remember a time before music: at the age of two, he picked up a guitar from his father’s instrument shop, and from that moment, his lifelong love affair began. Born in Yorkshire, Dominic Harrison began writing his own songs at 10 years old, enticed by the thrill of catharsis and self-expression he couldn’t find anywhere else. Since his self-titled debut EP in 2018, the 24-year-old’s lyrics have found universality in introspection, reckoning with sexuality, gender, class, gentrification and mental illness with disarming honesty in order to encapsulate the spirit of his generation. His fans are legion, and the numbers are reflective of this resonance: Harrison has 7.6 million Spotify Monthly Listeners , 4.5 million followers on TikTok and total YouTube views in nine figures . Harrison’s first creative statement was his 2018 debut album 21st Century Liability , which cemented his status as a fearlessly individual artist who thrived on breaking cultural taboos in his lyrics. This was succeeded by his 2019 EP, hope for the underrated youth , which debuted in the Top 10 of the UK Official Albums Chart . In its wake, the accolades started totting up: he was shortlisted for the BBC Sound of 2020 poll and subsequently crowned the MTV Push: Ones to Watch winner . Harrison more than fulfilled this promise with his second record, weird! , which topped the UK album chart and is now certified gold . After having performed headline tours across Asia, North America and Europe, the incredible success of weird! allowed Harrison to perform a sold-out, five night residency at London’s Kentish Town Forum and a date at the 10,000-cap Alexandra Palace to give his fans the live experience they sacrificed during the pandemic. Now, Harrison’s sights are set firmly on the future with the release of his hotly-awaited third album, Yungblud in September 2022, which is primed to be his greatest era yet.

GRAMMY® Award-nominated artist, performer and songwriter, Marcus King was downright destined to play music. By eight-years-old, the fourth generation Greenville, SC, native performed alongside pops, grandpa and his uncles for the first time. Logging thousands of miles on the road as The Marcus King Band, he established himself with unparalleled performance prowess and a dynamic live show.

During 2020, he linked up with Dan Auerbach [The Black Keys] and cut his solo debut, El Dorado, garnering a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of "Best Americana Album". Beyond praise from NPR, American Songwriter and more, Rolling Stone christened it "excellent", and Associated Press went as far as to claim, "El Dorado already stands out as a definite high point of 2020".

In between packing venues on his own, he performed alongside Chris Stapleton, Greta Van Fleet, and Nathanial Rateliff in addition to gracing the bills of Stagecoach and more with one seismic show after the next. Along the way, he caught the attention of Rick Rubin and signed to American Recordings.

Plugged into his old man's dusty amp with a '59 Les Paul in hand, Marcus set out to make a rock 'n' roll record in 2022. He didn't disguise his ambitions at all. He didn't hold back. He didn't think about anything but writing from the gut, shooting from the hip and playing straight from the heart. Joined by Auerbach, he made the kind of rock 'n' roll record that makes arenas and asses shake, and it's called Young Blood.

Review: Marcus King ‘Young Blood’

Marcus King, Young Blood, album cover

Marcus King ‘Young Blood’

By Martine Ehrenclou

Marcus King cuts loose on his new album Young Blood with high-voltage blues rocking tracks and a serious nod to the best of 70s rock. Given that King’s stellar guitar playing was minimized on his last album, El Dorado , thankfully the virtuosic player is back and in fine form. King comes alive on this scorcher with fiery guitar, smoldering vocals and a new rock & roll swagger.

Set to release on August 26th via Rick Rubin’s American Records/Republic Records, Young Blood is surely Marcus King’s best effort to date. The 26-year-old Grammy nominated vocalist, guitarist and songwriter reveals 11 blistering songs with influences from The Jimi Hendrix Experience, ZZ Top, Grand Funk Railroad and The Allman Brothers, but with his own modern twist. This isn’t a throwback album, but one that’s powered with the speed and torque of a V8.

Produced by The Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach, King strove for a classic rock power trio sound with his ’59 Les Paul and vintage amp, sequestering himself in Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio for six days. Marcus says, “We cut everything live, including vocals and guitar.”

Honest about having gone through a challenging time, the fourth generation South Carolina native opened a vein on many of the soul-shaking tracks, co-written with a variety of writers including Dan Auerbach, Desmond Child, Greg Cartwright, and Angelo Petraglia. King admits, “I was going through a lot during the album with addictions, breakups and addictions because of breakups.”

Marcus King transformed a rough passage in his life into the record of his career.

A smoking hot album opener, “It’s Too Late” is a rocking breakup song of love and respect for a woman he’s about to lose. With tremendous groove, King’s virtuosic guitar riffs and husky vocals reach new heights. Full throttle with soul and rhythm, it’s the kind of song we’ve been waiting for. It kicks open the gates for Marcus King to go all out.

Another standout, “Lie Lie Lie” is anchored by a catchy guitar riff, tight bass and drums and a synced interconnection between the band members. King’s guitar flies and cries, stutters with a Billy Gibbons tone. He sings, “I’m the fire baby, you know you’re my gasoline.” The track transitions to a side break of jam-band sensibility including flute and another rhythm altogether.

The band includes Marcus King (lead vocals, guitar), Chris St. Hilaire (drums, percussion), Nick Movshon (bass), and Andy Gabbard (guitar, background vocals.)

I can’t think of any artist today who’s remotely similar to Marcus King. He has something special beyond guitar virtuosity, soulful vocals, and well-written songs. He has so much soul combined with technique, you simply cannot turn away. Almost a Ray Charles mixed with Hendrix-like guitar innovation and skill.

Young Blood might be described as a 70s blues/rock album, but there isn’t anyone who is creating albums this fresh. Perhaps it Auerbach’s guiding hand, in addition to the mentors/producers who came before him. Warren Haynes is the first champion of Marcus King, and produced his second LP The Marcus King Band in 2016 when King was only 20 years old. Five albums and EPs later, you can still hear hints of Haynes and Gov’t Mule.

Among the meaty blues rockers with catchy guitar licks and grooves, there’s tales of despair and darkness. Even those are buoyed by exquisite musicianship and songcraft. “Pain” is one of them, jacked up by memorable guitar riffs and rhythms. The Hendrix-influenced “Aim High” has one of the most compelling guitar hooks I’ve heard.

“Blood On The Tracks,” co-written with Desmond Child (Aerosmith), seeps a Creedence Clearwater Revival vibe. King’s vocals couldn’t be more soulful, his guitar extra gritty. Marcus shares, “’Blood On The Tracks’ symbolizes getting on the train and leaving everything behind—or jumping in front of the train and leaving everything behind. Either way, it’s an escape.”

Don’t miss the rock & roll “Hard Working Man” and the riff-based blues rocker “Aim High,” a favorite on the album. On the latter you can almost see King, Auerbach and the band in the studio cutting the track with crisp drumming and bass, heads nodding in unison to the deep rhythm.

“Blues Worse Than I Ever Had” closes out the album, a country/rock number that’s soulful in a way that shoots straight for the heart.

Young Blood by Marcus King is a five-star record. Highly recommended.

20 things to do in Wilmington during the Azalea Festival, both official events and beyond

young blood tour

Well, it's here.

Wilmington's biggest annual celebration, the North Carolina Azalea Festival, returns to the Port City for the 77th time this week for five days of concerts, art, parties, pageant queens and much, much more April 3-7.

With an event as big and sprawling as the Azalea Festival, however, there are plenty of events that aren't technically festival events but are well worth checking out. Take music-centric Alt-Zalea Fest, for example, the Slamdance to the Azalea Festival's Sundance, which will take over Wilmington's Brooklyn Arts District on Saturday with dozens and dozens of bands and solo acts.

Let's get this party started.

ALL WEEKEND

'Beauty and the Beast'

April 5-14 at Thalian Hall : Thalian Association Community Theatre presents the stage version of this Disney movie musical. Features both songs from the movie by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, along with new songs from Menken and Tim Rice. Tickets at 910-632-2285.

This year, the tour heads to the Westbrook-Ardmore National Register Historic District , which includes two 100-year-old Wilmington neighborhoods you might never have heard of: Manhattan and the Bronx. According to research done by Historic Wilmington Foundation Director Travis Gilbert, the neighborhoods, which are off South 17th Street between Castle Street and Wrightsville Avenue, were named by real estate companies of the day trying to drum up sales in what was then the outskirts of the city. 1-5 p.m. April 6-7, with a ribbon-cutting 1 p.m. April 6 at Historic Fire Station No. 5, 1702 Wrightsville Ave. Home tour tickets are $40 each.
