"A gem of South India"

Visakhapatnam tourism.

Visakhapatnam, also commonly known as Vizag, is one of the oldest port cities in the country. Situated in the heart of Andhra Pradesh, Vizag was announced as the state capital of Andhra Pradesh on January 31, 2023. The city is known for its picturesque beaches and serene landscape, as well as a rich cultural past. The port of Visakhapatnam is renowned for being home to the oldest shipyard in all of India.

Located a short distance away from Visakhapatnam is Araku Valley, one of the prime attractions of Vizag. Situated at a lofty 910 metres above sea level, Araku Valley is a hill station replete with gushing waterfalls, crystal clear streams, lush green gardens and some challenging trekking trails. Vizag is dotted with many beaches along its coastline, with the most famous one being the Yarada Beach. One of the most stunning places to see in all of Visakhapatnam, Yarada beach is surrounded by majestic hills on three sides, and by the Bay of Bengal on the other side. One of the best things about Vizag’s beaches is that they are a lot cleaner and a lot less crowded than other famous beaches along the Indian coastline, and Yarada beach is no exception. It is the perfect place to sit back on the golden sands and witness a marvellous sunrise or sunset.  If you’re a history lover, the Borra Caves are one of the best tourist attractions that Vizag has to offer for you. Nestled amidst the Ananthagiri Hills in Araku Valley, the Borra Caves are over thousands of years old and are the biggest among all the caves found in India. Made entirely of natural karstic limestone, the caves are kaleidoscopic in nature, and the light falling on the rocks coupled with the waterfalls creates an extremely colourful effect, lending an aura of magic and mysticism to the entire ambience. The Katiki Waterfalls, situated a short distance away from the Borra Caves, is a gushing waterfall that measures around 50 feet in height and is completely surrounded by the lush greenery of the valley. The crystal-clear water cascading down the rocks, bordered by the gleaming green foliage is a sight for sore eyes. Being a coastal area, the primary cuisine of Visakhapatnam includes seafood, as well as traditional Andhra South Indian cuisine.  While Visakhapatnam is not exactly renowned for being a shopping destination, you will still find a lot of things that you can take back home. You can purchase a wide variety of stuff starting from handicrafts to Kalamkari paintings to wooden toys to even gorgeous Pochampalli and Ikat sarees.

By bus [ edit ]

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Travel Corporation (APSRTC) runs buses from almost every city and town to Visakhapatnam, along with some private operators, who run buses from a few of the major cities. Please check with APSRTC for timings. There is also a Garuda fleet of bus service (Volvo) to Vizag from Chennai, Bangalore, Vijayawada and Hyderabad which is very comfortable and happy going. This is the best way to do it if you want to travel by bus. APSRTC has several other bus services which have varied luxury levels and transit speeds. You might want to check the APSRTC at least 3 days in advance to be sure you have a reservation.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Visakhapatnam has no commuter rail service. However, APSRTC operates a lit of buses from 6 principal bus complexes in the city. They are:

  • Simhachalam
  • Maddilapalem
  • Visakha Steel City
  • Madhurawada

Dwarka Bus Station or RTC Complex depot is the largest bus station and complex in the city.

There are mainly two types of buses operated for suburban travel in Visakhapatnam.

  • City Ordinary: can be identified by its orange or red colour. It is operated on almost all suburban routes. Some of the main routes include RTC Complex- Gajuwaka(via NAD), Maddilapalem- Railway Station, RTC Complex- Gajuwaka ( via Scindia), Railway Station- Madhurawada, etc. These buses stop at almost every bus stop. The frequency is more than that of Metro Express buses. These buses sometimes become overcrowded during peak hours on weekdays. Some popular route numbers include 222, 400, 99, 25, 900, 60C, 300, 6A, 28, 38 and 12D.
  • Metro Express: can be identified by their blue and white colour. These buses run in most important routes such as 400, 211, 500, 99, 28, 38 etc. These buses don't stop at all bus stops and the fare for these buses is also a bit higher than that for city ordinary buses. Many of these buses are JNNURM funded and sport digital display boards which display route number and route details in both English and Telugu. Also most of these have cushioned seats which are comfortable and many of them also have air-suspension which makes the journey more comfortable. These buses don't get as crowded as City Ordinary buses.

The junction and Maddilapalem joins the Asilametta-Ramatalkies road to the National Highway 5. Buses from Madilapalem ply to the extreme ends of the city, including Anakapalle and Thagarapuvalasa.

Fares [ edit ]

The bus fare to get to Madilapalem from the railway station is only ₹8. Buses operate within a 5 minute frequency in routes with high demand. The minimum frequency in which buses operate is 40 minutes, i.e., every route is covered by an APSRTC bus once in every 40 minutes. The current list of destinations covered by the buses and their route numbers are available at Wikipedia .

Apart from buying tickets on the bus, you may also avail an RTC-Pass , which is a special type of pass that can be renewed once in a month. With the pass, you can board any APSRTC bus and travel anywhere within the city limits. An ordinary RTC-Pass costs just ₹750 which is around 13 dollars and in USD. The RTC complex is to the southeast of Asilametta. RTC complex is generally referred to as complex and is connected to every other region in the city. Apart from the bus, taxi/autorikshaw can also be hired. The autorikshaw is a mini taxi which is much more cheaper, but less convenient.

Bojjannakonda, Thotlakonda and Bhavikonda in and around Visakhapatnam were centres of Buddhism during the second century CE. Several Buddhist monuments such as stupas and chaityas were erected at these places. It is said that some of the corporal relics of the Buddha were preserved at these places. Beaches [ edit ].

vizag city travel

More than anything else, Vizag is known for its beaches. It boasts a number of beaches that are scenic and uncrowded. A few virgin beaches span along the eastern side of the city and stretch for miles. A spectacular beach only the locals are aware of is called the "Yarada" beach. Except for the occasional RTC bus, there is no public transport available. Still, the adventurous mind finds it rewarding if they can make an effort to get there. It's a private beach coming under Agrigold plantations therefore you need to pay a fee of ₹30/- to get onto the beach, but it's worth it.

The beaches are lovely, but, there are water sporting activities which started out initially like marine rafting and scuba diving, there are few beach cafes and restaurants. A water sports centre was started in Rushikonda. Vizagites are traditionally quite conservative and though the beaches and the hills are beautiful, but there is much here to interest the average tourist.

Must want is the sunrise or a moonrise on a full moon day at Tennati Park(near foot of Rope way) on the Vizag-Bhimili Beach Road it's truly a feast to the nature lovers. The sea looks orange in colour and is a wonderful sight.

  • 17.89046 83.45546 1 Bhimili ( Bheemili Beach ). About 25 km from the city and is what used to be a small village also called Bheemunipatnam . Apart from the beach, the village has the remains of a Portuguese church, Dutch cemeteries and a Buddhist Monastery (Pavurallakonda)   .
  • 17.71416 83.32366 2 Ramakrishna Beach . R.K.Beach is the most popular beach in the sense that, you can find the locals hanging out during the hot summers, and relatively less hot winters. On weekends and holidays, one can see that the entire beach comes alive, but not in a western sense where people take a plunge in the water, or surf. You can see people dressed in their best clothes, just sitting on the benches, or walking along. Caution : a lot of people have died while swimming due to the presence of dangerous "Rip currents". Take an evening stroll at RK Beach; it offers good pedestrian tracks, beautiful parks, museums, beaches and some wonderful open air restaurants. ( updated Oct 2021 )
  • 17.65413 83.2671 4 Yarada Beach . It is perceived as a private beach but actually it is not. Tourists can visit the beach directly or through the Yarada village. Yarada is the village behind the dolphin nose. To go to this beach, bus facility is available from Scindia junction. Also you can hire a cab to go there. The view of the beach and Vizag city from the top of the Dolphin's nose is memorable. The drive from Scindia to the top of dolphin nose, dolphin nose to Yarada is really enjoyable. • Araku Valley (110 km (68 mi)) — Many tourists visit Araku Valley along with Visakhapatnam. It is a scenic valley that can be reached by train or bus. It is definitely not a day trip, but the APTDC facilities can serve as a decent lodging. November to February are the best months to visit.

Known for its serene landscapes, and picturesque beaches, there are amazing places to visit in Vizag that add a great amount of significance to the city’s cultural heritage.

     Arrival at Vizag

Start off your journey to Vizag and arrive by afternoon. Check in to your hotel and have a delicious meal.

Hotel to stay

  • The Gateway Hotel Vizag – Situated in close proximity to the commercial district and tourist attractions, this hotel is the perfect choice for visiting all the places.

With a stunning view of RK Beach, this hotel in Visakhapatnam is a perfect seaside retreat to relax and unwind. We had a great stay at this hotel. The rooms are large and spacious with modern amenities. The bathroom is large and clean. The staff is courteous and very helpful. We booked a sea-facing room, which had a large window, facing the garden/swimming pool area and the sea. All the nearby attractions are at a walkable distance from this hotel. So it was a perfect place to stay if you are a tourist. There are 2/3 restaurants inside the hotel but I visited only one among them – Ming Garden. This restaurant offers Chinese cuisine and I have to say that I had the best Chinese food after a very long time. It was indeed a treat to my taste buds. If you are planning a visit to Vizag don’t forget to visit this place and enjoy your trip.

A coastal town without a beach is almost like breathing without air, it is impossible. Yarada Beach is one of the most scenic beaches in Visakhapatnam. Surrounded by hills on three sides, it is lined by the Bay of Bengal n the fourth, completing this picturesque scene you see here. Unlike other beaches of Vizag, this one is comparatively calmer and peaceful.

If you can visit the beach at the time of sunset and sunrise, you might be lucky to find it without people. Now that would give you the perfect frame, setting and view for those Instagram-worthy clicks, won’t it? You are sure to have a memorable time at this beach with its golden sands and crystal-clear water.

Photographer or not, you can always visit the beach with friends and family. We recommend you trek to the beach because that itself is another experience altogether.

However, the only catch to visit Dolphin Hill is it is inside the premises of Indian Navy and is heavily barricaded. But, thanks to its popularity among tourists, the navy does allow civilians access to this scenic spot. So, if you can plan a trip, this tourist place in Visakhapatnam is totally worth a visit.

From the carvings on the inner wall to the shrines of Lord Vishnu, everything at the shrine catches one’s fancy. Vizag Itinerary – The Perfect 2 Day Getaway in India

Tired of heading to Goa every weekend? Here’s the ultimate 2-day Vizag Itinerary for the perfect, refreshing getaway.

I was almost about to book another trip to Goa for a long weekend getaway with my friend and somehow, we didn’t feel the excitement we should have before finalizing our trip. We quickly realized we’ve been to Goa way too many times and felt we should try a different place that would give us the breath of fresh air we needed. I’d been to Vizag many years before on a college trip and remember being pleasantly surprised by the natural landscapes. With convenient flight options on offer, we agreed to visit Vizag for the beautiful valleys around the city in addition to the beautiful beaches.

Our goal at Wander Smartly is to make your travels smarter and help you have the best experience on your trips. From my multiple visits to the underrated city of Vizag or Vishakhapatnam in India, I share the all the details you would need to spend two invigorating days here.

Vizag Itinerary

Day 1: kailasagiri park, submarine museum, rushikonda beach.

Start your first day with a buffet breakfast and a relaxed morning at Varun Beach. I stayed at Novotel in Vizag, which is right across the beach and possibly the best place to stay in all of Vizag. Its prime location, majestic views and infinity pool make it the perfect abode for your vacation in Vizag.

Head to Kailasagiri Park – a hilltop park that offers panoramic views of the city and coastline. You can reach the summit by a ropeway or a drive. The park is adorned with sculptures, well-manicured gardens, and walking trails. Witness the colossal statue of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, which stands as a symbol of spirituality and devotion. A visit to the Kailasagiri Park was a calming and divine experience for me. It is well worth a visit on your trip to Vizag.

View from Kailasagiri Park

Next, grab lunch at Sri Sairam Parlour. This is a simple restaurant without any frills, but the food here is lip-smacking. I am a huge fan of South Indian food, namely, dosas and idlis, and found the food here to be absolutely delicious. Their filter coffee had the biggest froth I’ve seen on any coffee I’ve had across the globe. This is a must-visit place on your trip to Vizag. You can even eat here multiple times, like I did.

Filter Coffee at Sri Sairam Parlour

Your next stop is the Kursura Submarine Museum on RK Beach. INS Kursura, an Indian Navy submarine, served the nation diligently for over three decades before being decommissioned in 2001. Today, this once-operational submarine has found a new purpose as a floating museum, showcasing the trials and triumphs of submariners and the technology that enabled them to navigate the depths of the ocean.

One of the most poignant aspects of the museum is its portrayal of life aboard a submarine. Audio-visual presentations, photographs, and personal anecdotes from submariners shed light on the challenges they faced – from isolation and confinement to the camaraderie that developed among the crew members. These narratives offer a human perspective to the technological marvel that the submarine represents.

This museum is at walking distance from Novotel and charges a minimal entrance fee of INR 40 per person and INR 50 for a still camera. It is open on all days except Monday, from 2 pm to 8:30 pm. On Sundays, it is also open in the mornings from 10 am to 12:30 pm.

Spend the evening taking a tranquil walk on Rushikonda Beach. I went here only after sunset and had a mesmerizing moonlit ocean retreat. With its pristine shores, clear waters, and a host of water sports activities, Rushikonda Beach has earned its reputation as one of Vizag’s most sought-after destinations. Enjoy jet-skiing, banana ride, parasailing and even kayaking along Rushikonda Beach.

Moonlit Rushikonda Beach

Have a peaceful dinner at Novotel and tuck in early, as you have a bit of travelling to do the next day.

Day 2 – Araku Valley, Borra Caves, Coffee Museum

Kickstart your second day in Vizag by embarking on a scenic drive to the enchanting Araku Valley, nestled amidst the Eastern Ghats. The approximately 4-hour drive rewards you with lush landscapes, coffee plantations, and breathtaking views. As you approach the valley, you’ll be captivated by its mist-covered hills and refreshing weather. I was completely blown away by the magnificent views of the valley, that made me visit Vizag once again, after a decade.

Araku Valley

Araku Valley is renowned for its coffee plantations, which contribute to the region’s economic and cultural identity. The sight of meticulously maintained coffee estates covering the hillsides is a testament to the labor of the locals who cultivate the cherished beans. Many plantations offer guided tours, giving you the chance to learn about the coffee cultivation process and even sample freshly brewed coffee.

Araku Valley

I reached Araku Valley by road once and took a train the other time. Both ways to reach the valley are fine, you can choose as per your convenience. To check train options, go to the official website of Indian Railways – IRCTC – and put in ‘VSKP’ as origin and ‘ARK’ as destination.

Head over to Borra Caves, a wonder carved by nature over millions of years. These limestone caves boast intricate formations that resemble sculptures, stalactites, and stalagmites. The play of light and shadow adds an ethereal touch to the interiors. Don’t miss the Lord Shiva lingam-shaped formation, a sight to behold. Ensure you wear comfortable clothing and carry a jacket as it can get chilly inside the caves.

The ambiance within Borra Caves is both mystical and enigmatic. The cool air, the gentle echoes of water droplets, and the unique smell of mineral-rich earth combine to create an atmosphere that transports you to a different realm. The faint echoes and reverberations further add to the sense of awe and wonder as you explore deeper into the cave’s chambers.

End the tour to the valley with a visit to the Araku Valley Coffee Museum. I happened to discover this museum on my return journey by chance, and I’m glad I stopped to make a visit! As a coffee-lover, I loved knowing all about the discovery of coffee, how it gained popularity all over the world and many more factoids about my favorite beverage. I also grabbed some freshly brewed Arabica from the local plantations at the museum, and it was just the right touch to the coffee museum experience.

Fun Factoid from Araku Valley Coffee Museum

The Araku Coffee Museum is more than just a showcase of coffee beans; it’s a celebration of the intricate process that transforms these beans into a cherished beverage. The Araku Coffee Museum isn’t very popular and you wouldn’t find many people writing or talking about it, but this place is a must-visit on your journey back to Vizag from Araku Valley. This Is the No. 1 U.S. City People Want to Move to in 2024 — and It Has the Largest Retirement Community in the World

Hint: it's in the Sunshine State.

vizag city travel

Michael Warren/Getty Images

Americans are on the move. Over eight million people relocated to a different state in 2022, according to estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau . And a new report by relocation company MoveBuddha sheds more light on where Americans are headed in 2024. Based on customer search data, the company identified the most desirable destinations with the highest migration rates, and a city in the Sunshine State topped the list.

The Villages in Central Florida, known as the largest retirement community in the world, had the highest in-to-out ratio, 4.38, meaning that for every one hundred people who leave the city, another 438 move in.

“The Villages is a racehorse that’s outpacing every other city in the country for growth. Fueled by a ‘silver tsunami,’ this Baby Boomtown has been on the rise for a decade and shows no signs of slowing down in 2024. With baby boomers reaching retirement age through 2031, the Florida destination is poised for even more growth in years to come,” the report stated, noting that the community offers a mix of good weather and activities.

MoveBuddha’s analysis also shows that while housing costs are a consideration, Americans are willing to relocate to a destination where real estate prices are not necessarily the lowest. In The Villages, for example, the median home value is $407,528, which is more than the nation’s average of $347,716.

Another destination popular with senior adults that made it to the top three is Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where over a fifth of the population is aged 65 and over. The oceanfront community ranked third with an in-to-out ratio of 3.22.

However, MoveBuddha noted that cities with bustling art scenes located in natural settings draw the most interest overall. Asheville, North Carolina, for example, which takes the No. 2 spot with an in-to-out ratio of 3.29, is one of them. Similarly, Billings, Montana; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Boulder, Colorado; and Burlington, Vermont; are in the top 10 most desirable places to move to in 2024.

But if you are looking for affordability, the report also points out that five of the 25 winning cities have median home values of under $200,000, and those are Dayton, Ohio; Hartford, Connecticut; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Des Moines, Iowa; and Champaign, Illinois.

Another significant outtake from the report is that Americans are no longer leaving urban areas — a trend that started during the COVID-19 pandemic. People favor mid-size cities of about 200,000 residents, with Boston being the most populous of all on the list.

Earthquake snarls air and train travel in the New York City area

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 4:36 PM EDT / CBS News

An  earthquake  centered in New Jersey and felt across the New York City region on Friday disrupted air and rail travel, with ground stoppages at airports in the New York City area and delays in train service.

Travel operations were momentarily halted Friday morning with ground stoppages at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens and at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, with crews working to resume normal air traffic operations. By early afternoon, the ground stoppage at JFK had been lifted.

Arriving and departing flights in Newark also resumed in the afternoon, but delays averaged roughly two hours,  according  to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The earthquake, which occurred roughly 10:20 a.m. Eastern time, had either a 4.7 or 4.8 magnitude and was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, 40 miles west of New York City,  according to the United States Geological Survey.

Newark airport is experiencing average departure delays of 43 minutes, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Inbound aircraft that are already airborne are delayed by about an hour. Inbound flights that have not yet taken off are being held until 12:30 p.m., according to the site.

Flights in and out of LaGuardia airport in Queens were also delayed, likely in order for airport staff to check for damage to the airport and runways and clear away any debris.

The ground stoppages and delays are not expected to last long.

Additionally, New Jersey Transit said it's experiencing up to 20-minute delays across its entire rail service system, in both directions. NJ Transit said it's inspecting a bridge for damage to ensure train travel is safe.
