If you're running iOS 14 or later, Safari now comes with a translation feature baked into the browser, making it easier than ever to translate a web page on iPhone and iPad.

Once enabled, text is translated in-line on the webpage that you're viewing. It's a handy tool if you want to read websites that are written in different languages, and it's available right in the address bar in Safari.

With this in mind, here's how you can translate web pages in Safari on iPhone and iPad.

How to translate a web page on iPhone in iOS 16 and iPadOS 16

In iOS 15 and later, the ability to translate a web page's language to your native language is now a built-in part of Safari. As such, you no longer need a third-party app to translate. Here's how to use built-in language translation in Safari in iOS 14, iOS 15, and later.

• Tap the action button on the left side of the address bar while visiting a site that you need to translate. The button looks like two A's next to each other.
• Tap Translate to [Your Device Language] .

• Tap Enable Translation if prompted.

Your page will then be translated into the primary language that you've set on your device. If you want to revert back to the page's original language, take the following steps.

• Tap the translate button in the Safari address bar. It takes the place of the standard action button on the left side of the address bar.
• Tap View Original .

The page will revert to its original language.

If you're running a version of iOS 13 or earlier on your device, then a third-party app with a translation extension is what you'll want to use. Microsoft's Translator extension is an excellent tool for the task, as it translates the web page in place when activated.

Microsoft Translator

Microsoft Translator is a great third-party solution for translating web pages, and its translations take place in-line on the web, rather than taking you to another, translated version of the page like some other apps.

Once you've got it downloaded, you can set up the action extension for translation web pages.

• Open Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
• While viewing a web page, tap the share button .
• Scroll to the left on the bottom row of icons.

• Tap the More button.
• Turn the switch next to Microsoft Translator to the green 'on' position.

Now that you have the app installed, you can use it in Safari from the share menu.

• Head to the web page that you want to translate.

• Tap the share button at the bottom of the display.
• Tap the Microsoft Translator button. The extension will then translate the entire page for you.

How to translate web pages in safari on mac.

Have you landed on a French or Spanish website? Translate it to English with the press of a button!

Often find yourself on websites with text in a foreign language? If you use Safari, there's no need to go to Google Translate. You can translate web pages between seven languages right in Safari on a Mac.

Starting with Safari 14.0, Apple included a translation feature directly in the browser. As of this writing, the feature is in beta, but fully functional. If your Mac is running the latest version of macOS Mojave, Catalina,  Big Sur , or newer, you can access the translation feature.

The translation functionality works between the following languages: English, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Brazilian Portuguese.

By default, you can translate any of the above languages to English. You can also add more languages to the mix (we'll talk more about that below).

To get started, open a web page in one of the supported languages. Safari will automatically recognize that language, and you'll see "Translation Available" in the URL bar, along with a Translation button; click it.

If this is the first time you've used the feature, a pop-up will appear. Click "Enable Translation" to turn on the feature.

In the translation menu, select "Translate to English."

The text on the page will instantly convert to English, as shown in the image below. The Translation button will also turn blue.

To disable the Translation feature and return to the original language, click the Translation button again, and then select "View Original."

As we mentioned above, you can also translate to languages other than English. To do so, click the Translation button, and then select "Preferred Languages."

This opens the "Language & Region" menu in System Preferences. Here, click the plus sign (+) to add a new preferred language. You can add multiple languages here while continuing to use English as the default language across your Mac.

In the pop-up, select the languages you want to add, and then click "Add."

System Preferences will ask if you want to make this your default language. Choose the previous default language if you want it to remain the status quo.

Now that you've added a new preferred language, you'll see the translation button even when you visit web pages that are in English.

The translation process for a preferred language is the same: click the Translation button in the URL bar, and then select "Translate to [the language you selected]."

Again, you can view the original at any time by simply clicking "View Original" in the Translation menu.

If you're traveling to a new country, you can also use the built-in Translate app on your iPhone or iPad to quickly translate speech between multiple languages.

You may be able to make more languages available in the Translate menu by adding the languages in Language & Region preferences. Once you add a language to your list of preferred languages, if a translation is available to that language, it will appear in the Translate menu in Safari.

7 Browser Extensions to Help Translate Different Languages

Harness the full potential of your browser with add-ons that can supercharge everything from web searches to email writing . For language learners who want to grow their vocabulary and develop confidence, browser extensions are an opportunity to casually practice while online. But before you download anything, here’s how to audit a browser extension to ensure it’s safe.

Whether you're streaming Netflix series during your spare time or gobbling up the latest tech news, at least one of the following picks is likely worth incorporating into your language learning process. Test the options that spark your interest and simply uninstall anything that you don’t enjoy. Although you will not receive speaking practice, these browser extensions can help hone your reading and listening skills.

Language Reactor is for anyone who wants to practice a new language while streaming videos on their computer. After the browser extension is installed, YouTube videos are able to display two sets of captions at the same time. The list of available languages is impressive, and hovering over a captioned word displays a translation dictionary.

If you binge-watch movies and TV shows on your computer, Language Reactor’s other primary function is to provide dual captions for Netflix entertainment. Practice English with the minions from Despicable Me or brush up on your Korean during the Squid Game bloodbath.

In addition to Netflix and YouTube, Language Reactor requests access to your data from Amazon. To turn this off, click the puzzle icon located to the right of the address bar, and select Manage Extensions . Tap on Details , toggle off automatic access to listed sites, and manually pick the sites.

The basic extension is free. More features, like the ability to save vocabulary words, can be unlocked with a $5 monthly subscription. Language Reactor is available for Chrome, but its website says Firefox and Edge versions are in the works.

Google’s language tools receive a fair amount of criticism from teachers and human translators. When pasting large blocks of text into Google for translation, the subtle complexities of language are smoothed over. Literal meanings are easy to convey, but intentions and contexts are difficult to parse. Keeping these limitations in mind, Google Translate, Google Dictionary, and Google Input Tools are solid browser extensions for Chrome users.

The Google Translate extension is simple to use for pop-up translations as you browse the internet. You can adjust the settings so pop-ups happen automatically when you highlight a word, or buttons can appear beneath the highlighted word for you to click on to see the translation. Tap on the speaker icon to hear a word aloud. If this extension is pinned at the top of your browser, anytime you click on the icon, a text box for translation immediately appears.

Google Dictionary does not support as many languages as Google Translate, but the extension is useful if you’re studying one of the available options. When double-clicking on a word, the definition pops up on screen. For more advanced readers, this can be crucial for learning new words without relying on direct translations. If you would like to go back and practice later, Google Dictionary lets you store a list of defined words.

Typing in German or Italian with a standard English keyboard is straightforward, but what if you're learning Hindi or Chinese? With Google Input Tools you can write in different languages. The transliteration feature allows you to type the phonetic spelling of a word and choose the corresponding script from a dropdown menu. In addition, the handwriting tool lets you draw characters from other languages by using your mouse cursor.

While reading articles online, Toucan automatically translates a small portion of the content for blended language learning. Hovering over translations by Toucan shows the original word and allows you to play an audible pronunciation. The standard extension is free to use, but a subscription plan is offered for reviewing saved words and avoiding ads. Toucan is compatible with Chrome and Firefox.

For English speakers, the browser extension offers translations in 11 languages. Spanish, German, Korean, Arabic, and Hebrew are a few of the choices. The company is working to expand its offered languages with additions such as Vietnamese, Swedish, and Farsi.

By cherry-picking words out of larger blocks of text, you may not experience complete contextual accuracy while using Toucan. When approaching a new language, employing a myriad of learning strategies is better than relying on a single source of information. Toucan has its drawbacks but may be a fantastic tool for people who read multiple articles a day and would like supplemental language practice.

With Mate Translate , words or phrases you read online can be translated into more than 100 languages. Double-click on a single word for a white text box to show the translation. If you tap on the speaker icon, a person will say the word aloud. Translate more than one word by highlighting the portion you would like to better understand and either clicking on the Mate Translate logo that appears below the selected words or using the keyboard shortcut, which is initially set to Shift + T .

Watching entertainment in other languages is a popular and accessible learning strategy; if you’re a Netflix subscriber, Mate Translate can be used on subtitles. The browser extension also allows you to translate entire webpages.

As a versatile option, Mate Translate is available for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Edge, and Safari. Unlock extra features for the extension, like synonym access and a dark mode, with a subscription to Mate Pro.

The core functionality of TransOver is similar to Google Translate. Pick a language you want to practice and set the browser extension to activate either when you highlight a word or hover over a word. It’s available on Firefox , Chrome , and Opera . The extension is also on Edge but is poorly reviewed by users of that browser. TransOver is a simplistic, free option for people who want to occasionally translate words while surfing the Internet and don’t need a complicated browser extension cluttering their day-to-day user experience.

The extension can automatically fill in two-factor authentication codes as well. If you’re using an iPad, you will get the entire desktop 1Password experience. The extension will appear in the toolbar for you to access at any time.

The developer behind Apollo for Reddit, Christian Selig, has created a new Safari extension called Amplosion. Amplosion redirects you to the original webpage when you open an AMP link in Safari. The app also lets you keep track of how many times you’ve visited an AMP link and how many times you’ve used Amplosion to avoid one. Amplosion is priced at just $1.99 and if you hate AMP as much as I do it’s well worth it.

Christian has also created an extension that adds an HTML web inspector to Safari. The app is priced at $0.99 and is well worth it – since Apple still hasn’t added its own inspector.

CardPointers

The new CardPointers Safari extension knows what deals you may be able to take advantage of on different shopping websites. CardPointers says that it’s compatible with thousands of websites. While shopping in Safari with the extension enabled, you’ll get a notice telling you which card to use for the best deal as well as any special offers.

Cheep is an app that helps you find deals on Flights. With its latest update, it adds a Safari extension for use with Google Flights. The extension helps determine the cost per mile, distance in miles, and recommends whether or not you should book the flight. Cheep is free.

The app lets you create blockers, personalize search, and customize the design of webpages. The app can also recommend enhancements to enable to make the extension more powerful.

Safari already has some translation features built-in but a new app from Gikken called Language Translator can help you take things to the next level. The app’s new Safari extension can automatically translate sites in 40 languages without any work required by the user. You can also select text and get a pop-up window if you want to translate it to another language. The app is pricey though at $29.99 but if you frequently need to translate different sites in a multitude of languages it might be worth the buy.

Vidimote is a new Safari extension that allows you to control video playback from the toolbar. The extension lets you change the speed of videos, jump ahead, switch between PiP and fullscreen, and more. Vidimote is $4.99 and available now.

StopTheMadness

StopTheMadness is a Safari extension that helps you take control of websites you frequently visit. This only works for select few languages. Pales in comparison to Google Translate. Ot’s going to take Apple another 5,10 years to catch up with other languages… if at all 😢. This article is bit misleading. It does not explain how limited this feature is

I’m running high seirra 10 13 6 and when I type in a foreign website (orange fr as you suggested to test it) next to each selection is written ‘translate this page’ and there is no ‘aA’ in the selection which I guess is even better? Go to your Downloads folder and click on the downloaded file.

Confirm the installation

Click Allow on the system dialog window to approve the start of your Lingvanex installation.

Go to Downloads on the top-right corner to open the setup file and approve the installation.

Click Yes on the system dialog window to approve the start of your Lingvanex installation.

Follow setup instructions

Click the button in the installer window to begin installation.

RFK Jr.'s quest to get on the presidential ballot in all 50 states

Washington —  In mid-April, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was on the ballot as an independent presidential candidate in Utah and Michigan, though his campaign says it is working to get him on the ballot in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. 

Kennedy's backers insist he's not pursuing his White House bid just to hand the election to another candidate. They say he's the real deal and has a shot at winning the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidential election. 

Getting on the ballot in enough states to secure 270 votes — just over half the 538 votes in the Electoral College — is no small feat for a third-party contender. But it's possible. 

"I think he has a very good chance of getting onto all 50 ballots," said Bernard Tamas, an associate professor of political science at Valdosta State University who studies third parties. "The short answer is, I can't say definitively that he will, but it looks like he's on track for it." 

Kennedy's campaign says it has completed signature gathering in seven other states in addition to Utah and Michigan — Nevada, Idaho, Hawaii, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Nebraska and Iowa. 

The super PAC supporting Kennedy, American Values 2024, says it has collected enough signatures in Arizona, Georgia and South Carolina. 

And yet, the campaign has yet to complete the paperwork and submit the petitions in those states. It noted that it still has months in most states to submit the paperwork because most states' deadlines aren't until July or August.

The campaign says it's trying to evade legal battles by picking the right time to hand in the petitions, holding onto the signatures until the 11th hour in hopes that the signatures will face fewer challenges.

Kennedy has already run into a paperwork snafu in Nevada . In March, the campaign learned that it would likely have to start the signature process all over again after failing to include a vice presidential candidate on the petition it used to collect signatures in the state. 

"After successfully collecting all of the signatures we need in Nevada, the DNC Goon Squad and their lackeys in the Nevada Secretary of State's office are outright inventing a new requirement for the petition with zero legal basis," Kennedy campaign ballot access attorney Paul Rossi complained . 

In addition to varying state regulations for ballot access and expensive legal battles, Kennedy faces opposition from Democratic groups aiming to undermine third-party campaigns.

Earlier this year, the Democratic National Committee formed a team to challenge third-party and independent presidential candidates. The effort will depend on other groups like Third Way, MoveOn, and a new super PAC, Clear Choice, backed by allies of President Biden.

"Only two candidates have a path to 270 electoral votes — President Biden and Donald Trump," said DNC spokesperson Matt Corridoni. "The stakes are high and we know this is going to be a close election. That's why a vote for any third-party candidate is a vote for Donald Trump."

The Kennedy campaign said it plans to secure ballot access in all 50 states, dismissing suggestions that Kennedy aims to help former President Donald Trump's bid for the presidency by taking votes from Mr. Biden.

"Our campaign is a spoiler. I agree with that. It's a spoiler for President Biden and for President Trump," Kennedy said when he revealed his running mate, Nicole Shanahan, last month.

In some states, the time frame for collecting signatures is brief. Others have provisions for signature thresholds to be reached in every county of a state. More than half the states require independent candidates to have a running mate.

Collecting enough signatures isn't difficult in every state. Many only require 1,000 to 5,000 signatures, Tamas said. Louisiana requires no signatures and a $500 fee. Other states have higher thresholds. Texas requires over 113,000 signatures, and Florida requires more than 145,000. 

And those are the number of valid signatures required. Any third-party candidate needs to overshoot that target in order to make sure they have enough in case some of the signatures are found to be invalid. 

In states like Hawaii, where the Kennedy campaign claims to have gathered enough signatures, it's more convenient to run under a party affiliation rather than as an independent candidate. Kennedy supporters are also collecting signatures in California, Mississippi, North Carolina and Delaware to establish the "We The People" party, which can then nominate Kennedy as its presidential candidate.

The Kennedy campaign says it's aiming to collect 60% over the signature threshold in each state. 

"We have the field teams, volunteers, legal teams, paid circulators, supporters, and strategists ready to get the job done," said campaign press secretary Stefanie Spear. "We are exceeding all our benchmarks and will be announcing new states each week."

But Tamas says Kennedy should be aiming higher — closer to double the required number of signatures. 

"I'm surprised they're saying it's as low as 60, you just can't take any chances," Tamas said. 

Collecting signatures is expensive. Kennedy's super PAC estimates that it will cost around $40 to $50 million just to collect all the necessary signatures, although Tamas noted RFK Jr.'s running mate, Shanahan, the billionaire ex-wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin, has the financial resources. 

Collecting the signatures isn't the hardest part — it's the battle over the signatures that's the real fight, Tamas said. The Democratic Party will be fighting hard to invalidate Kennedy's signatures.

"You really have to prepare for a battle, so a lot of the cost is not actually getting the signatures, but actually the legal fees of fighting each state," Tamas said. 

Democratic Party members are already trying to block Kennedy from getting on the ballot in Hawaii and Michigan. 

Historically, there have been independent candidates who secured ballot access across nearly all states. In 1968, George Wallace, the former governor of Alabama, and in 1992, businessman Ross Perot both appeared on the ballot in all 50 states. Ralph Nader's candidacy in 2000 extended to 43 states. 

Only Wallace managed to win any electoral votes. Perot's impressive 19% of the popular vote in 1992 did not translate to the Electoral College.

Perot's former campaign manager, Russell Verney, said third-party candidates must overcome more obstacles today than in the past.

"Every time there's a reasonably successful independent candidate, the state legislatures, which are made up of Republicans and Democrats, who by definition do not like competition, increase the state barriers to getting on the ballot," Verney said. "The requirements to get on these state ballots continues to get more onerous in every election cycle."

But "someone in RFK's position, I don't think the Democrats are going to stop him," Tamas said. "I think he's going to be on — if not all — then probably most of the ballots." 

A successful third-party candidate has to focus on individuals who aren't being represented by the major parties, Tamas said, and that's a problem for Kennedy.

"He's all over the place, and it's really not clear what's the disaffected group he's trying to tap into," Tamas said. "He's running on conspiracy theories is part of it. But if someone's a conspiracy theorist, chances are they're going to support Donald Trump."

At this point, if Kennedy's ballot petitions were validated in all of the states where his website says the signature gathering is complete — Nevada, Hawaii, Idaho, Nebraska, Iowa, North Carolina and New Hampshire — plus Louisiana, which, as noted, does not have a signature requirement, and the two states where he is on the ballot — he could win 73 electoral votes. Add in the three states where his super PAC says it has the signatures, and that's another 36, putting him at 109.

The latest YouGov/Economist national polling shows Mr. Biden and Trump tied with 44% and Kennedy at 3%. 

Kennedy's support is likely to drop off before November, Tamas predicted. 

But it's not yet clear whether Mr. Biden or Trump stands to lose more from Kennedy's presidential bid. 

"Nobody really knows for sure who he's going to take votes from," Tamas said.

Mayor Parker Announces Creation of Philadelphia Residential Property Assessment Task Force

The announcement accompanies the release of a report examining the accuracy, uniformity, and equity of philadelphia’s real estate tax assessments   .

PHILADELPHIA – Mayor Cherelle L. Parker announced today the creation of the Philadelphia Residential Property Assessment Task Force. This Task Force is being created in partnership with Reinvestment Fund and Community Legal Services, Inc. (CLS). Mayor Parker has asked Ira Goldstein, Senior Advisor of Policy Solutions at Reinvestment Fund, to Chair the Task Force, similar to when he chaired the Philadelphia Home Appraisal Bias Task Force created by then-Councilmember Parker in 2021.

The announcement of the Philadelphia Residential Property Assessment Task Force accompanies the release of a report entitled  Examining the Accuracy, Uniformity, & Equity of Philadelphia’s 2023 Real Estate Tax Assessments . The report, which was recently completed by Reinvestment Fund’s Policy Solutions Group and prepared with CLS and the Chicago-based Center for Economic Policy Analysis, demonstrates that, while there has been steady progress made in the quality and fairness of Philadelphia residential property assessments, there remains more work to do.

“I want to thank James Aros, Jr. (AJ), our Chief Assessment Officer at the Office of Property Assessment (OPA). When CLS and Reinvestment Fund came to him, wanting to partner with the OPA on this research, AJ embraced transparency and effectively ‘opened up their books’ for scrutiny,” said  Mayor Cherelle L. Parker . “One of the main recommendations from CLS and Reinvestment Fund to accompany the release of this report is to create a Task Force to continue this work, which is why I am proud to announce the creation of this Task Force, which will be Chaired by Ira Goldstein.”

“On behalf of the OPA, I would like to thank Mayor Parker and our partners at CLS and Reinvestment Fund for providing the forum to continue these important conversations,”  James Aros, Jr., Chief Assessment Officer, Office of Property Assessment  said. “The OPA’s inclusion on the Task Force affirms our commitment to continuously explore ways to improve the uniformity, equity, and accuracy of assessments and the assessment process.”

“Our analysis uncovered positive news, which is that the accuracy of residential assessments by the OPA, which ultimately help determine people’s property tax bills, has significantly improved in recent years. Much of the credit for this improvement goes to James Aros, Jr., and his staff at the OPA, who met with us several times while working on our report, and who took our concerns seriously,” said  Monty Wilson, CLS Supervising Attorney .  “However, there is still work to be done. The report finds that there is statistical evidence of unintentional, systemic bias in some residential assessments done by the OPA. More specifically, the report found that there are ‘hotspot’ neighborhoods in Philadelphia where property assessments are not sufficiently accurate, or uniform based on professional standards, and these hotspots are more likely to happen in lower-income Black and Hispanic neighborhoods.”

“Our study shows improvement in assessment quality measures, but challenges do remain that disproportionately disadvantage the City’s Black, Hispanic, and lower income neighborhoods. Improvements are due, in no small part, to the leadership of Mr. Aros, Jr.,” said  Ira Goldstein, Senior Advisor of Policy Solutions at Reinvestment Fund . “Through Mayor Parker’s Philadelphia Residential Property Assessment Task Force, we look forward to ensuring that the OPA gets the benefit of resident voices, and property tax experts, as they move forward. I’m honored to be named by Mayor Parker to lead the City’s Task Force.”

The Task Force will include representation from the OPA, CLS, Reinvestment Fund, and industry experts. The Task Force’s work and goals will be divided into two parts: identifying best practices and recommendations and creating frameworks for implementation. Task Force participants will first review and scrutinize the study’s methods and recommendations. Through discourse with subject matter experts and convening public listening sessions open to Philadelphia property owners, the Task Force will: further detail the experiences and challenges Philadelphia homeowners face when dealing with the assessment process; identify an array of best practices around accurate and fair property assessments, with a particular focus on addressing systemic racial and ethnic bias in assessments; and design a set of recommendations that are actionable in the City of Philadelphia for Mayor Parker and her administration.

Finally, as part of its recommendations, the Task Force will not only address the current inequities identified in the study, but also present an implementation process to ensure continued progress and continuous monitoring of that progress toward more accurate, uniform, and equal assessments for residents across Philadelphia’s neighborhoods.
