All Royal Caribbean Loft Suites are Duplex Apartments (accommodations on 2 levels/decks). They feature separate bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (1 with bathtub, 1 shower-only), large-sized outdoor terraces (with premium garden furniture, 4-seat dining tables, some have outdoor Jacuzzi tubs). Loft Suite's lower level houses the living room and dining room (dry bar, bath with shower), while the upper level houses the bedroom and the full-bath (with bathtub). Some Loft Suites are accessible (with an elevator), and some are connecting.

Royal Loft Suites have 2 bedrooms (2 twin beds /to double, 2 Pullman /bunk beds, 2 vanity/chair), 2 bathrooms (master bathroom has bathtub), dry bar (mini-fridge), living area (double sofa bed), dining room (table, chairs), media center (surround sound, large flat TV, stereo, CD/DVD player). These suite accommodations are rated among the top-10 best suites at sea. Each of them features a 1600 ft2 (~150 m2) indoor space plus the 874 ft2 (roughly 80 m2) terrace balcony (wrapping around the suite) with its own outdoor whirlpool bath and dining area. Among the suites' prominent features are also the 2-story high floor-ceiling windows (glass walls), an upstairs located bedroom (glass wall partition, with blackout curtains), adjoining bathroom (separate bathtub and shower, double-sink vanity with a bidet). On the main level, there's a second bathroom with shower. Main level's living room has convertible to double bed sofa. The suite's master bathroom (on level 2) is roughly the size of a standard Royal Caribbean cabin. Rated among the top suite bathrooms at sea, the Royal Loft Suite's bath (included in the suite combo image below) features an open-space design, a huge-size whirlpool tub, floor-ceiling windows with ocean view, 2 rain-head faucets, 2 sinks, a bidet, ample cabinet space for storing toiletries and towels. On Royal Caribbean Caribbean cruises, Royal Loft Suite fares start at USD 1200 per person - per night!

Crown Loft, Star Loft, and Owners Suites have a living room (double sofabed), dining room (dry bar, 4-seat table), bathroom (with bathtub), bedroom (with twins /convertible to double bed), balcony (outdoor dining area with a 4-seat table and wet/dry bars).

Also unique for RCI Oasis-class cruise liners are the aft-facing Aqua Theater Suites with huge wraparound balconies overlooking the ship's Aqua Theater (show lounge with large plunge pool and live entertainment). They are in two types (1-Bedroom and 2-Bedroom) and have living room (double sofabed), media center, dining area, separate bedroom (twins convertible to double bed). The larger Aqua Theater Suites are with 2 separate bedrooms (1 with double bed, 1 with bunk beds), 2 bathrooms (1 with bathtub, 1 shower-only), dining room (dry bar, 4-seat table).

Grand Suites (Family Suites) are also in two types (1-Bedroom and 2-Bedroom), the larger having 2 separate bedrooms (1 with double bed/convertible to twins, 1 with 2 bunk beds), living room (vanity, double sofabed, 2 separate bathrooms (1 with shower, 1 with bathtub), balcony (4-seat dining table).

All balcony staterooms have floor-ceiling sliding doors opening to a private step-out verandah. The ship's mid-aft part is humped (wider). Cabins on the aft hump's outer part are premium location staterooms. Aft on each side there are groups of hump balcony rooms considered a premium location. Since decks there are wider, these cabins have larger verandas and feature great views (side to side and also when looking down). Depending on weather/wind, aft-facing cabins may experience soot issues. Most of the aft balconies offer views of the Aquatheater.

Family Balcony cabins have 2 twin beds (to Royal King-size), bathroom (shower), living area (double sofabed), separate bathroom (with 2 bunk beds).

Boardwalk-Central Park Balcony cabins are all with step-out verandahs, while Boardwalk-Central Park View cabins have a Picture Window. These (also unique for Royal Caribbean Oasis-class ships) cruise accommodations are located above the "Boardwalk Neighborhood" and the "Central Park Neighborhood" (overlooking the ship's interior) so noise could be an issue. Be advised that all Central Park and Boardwalk balcony cabins have "interior balconies". These are not private as they can be viewed from verandas located on the opposite side.

Category 1K-Ultra-Spacious Oceanview (Family Oceanview) are cabins perfect for families with more kids. This is a family-type stateroom (bow-facing) with master bedroom (2 single twin beds convertible to a double bed), second bedroom (2 Pullman beds/upper and lower bunks), a double sofabed (in the living room), 1 bathroom (WC-shower), 2 large round-shaped windows (non-opening).

Family Interior cabins have each 2 lower single beds (convertible to Royal King-size), separate bedroom (with 2 Pullman beds/lower-upper bunk beds), 1 double sofabed.

Most Oceanviews are with a large Picture Window (size is 24 inches / 61 cm) and expanded lounge areas (with double sofabed). The exception is all forward-facing oceanviews (on decks 7 through 11), which are with slanted windows overlooking the ship's bow. The "family oceanview" cabin categories 1K (Ultra Spacious), 1R (Family Interior) and 1V (Family Balcony) are with convertible to double twin beds, 2 Pullman beds, 1 double sofabed, larger closet space, expanded the living area.

Category "Promenade View Interior" are also unique cabins available on the largest RCI cruise ships. These are inside cabins with bowed windows (bay window) overlooking the Atrium's Royal Promenade. The bow window gives more interior space and is also a great vantage point to watch the Royal Promenade's "street" activities - including the parade each evening. Remember to keep the curtains closed at night as there are Promenade cabins across the street too.

Another unique Royal Caribbean cabin type is the "Interior Virtual Balcony". The stateroom features a floor-ceiling LED screen (size 80-inch / 2 m). This is a 4K ultra-HD screen (no TV functions) that receives real-time/live video streaming from the cruise ship's outside cameras. This means you will enjoy "balcony views" without paying for the higher-priced cabins with step-out balconies.

Royal Caribbean's single cabins (Studios) are double staterooms with no single supplement required. These Studios are designed for passengers traveling solo and in categories SW-Studio Interior (with Virtual Balcony), 2O-Studio Oceanview and 2B-Studio Balcony. Studio cabin sizes range between 100-200 ft2 (9-19 m2). Currently, on Symphony OTS are not available any Single Oceanview or Single Interior cabins, which on Harmony OTS are located on deck 4 starboard.

All Symphony OTS cabins as standard/complimentary amenities offer 2 twin beds (convertible to Royal King), ample closet/drawer space, en-suite bathroom (WC-toilet, shower, single-sink vanity, hairdryer, bath products), sitting area (desk, drawers, vanity, couch/convertible sofabed), smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies), individual air-conditioning, direct-dial phone, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), radio, minibar, Internet access, 24-hour room service (5-12 am /complimentary), European and US/UK electrical outlets, USB charging points, Internet access, individual air-conditioning. Twin beds size is 36 x 82 inch (90 x 210 cm).

In-cabin babysitting is available at an hourly fee (US$19 per kid) for 4 kids per stateroom max. For in-cabin use can be borrowed movies, toys and games suitable for kids with autism.

In-cabin coffee maker rentals are offered on the cruise ship, allowing passengers to rent an Illy Espresso machine for in-room use. The Illy coffee maker's rental pricing depends on the number of capsules - 14 capsules: (machine rental price USD 39), 21 (USD 56), 28 (USD 69) and 35 (USD 79).

Wi-Fi costs US$15 per device per day (50% discount on a second device). The Wi-Fi is always on (shipwide coverage) and super fast (even for streaming movies).

Among the new technologies implemented on all Royal Caribbean ships are the RFID wristbands (aka WOWbands). These are optional choices for replacing the RCI's traditional SeaPass cards. They allow passengers to do onboard purchases (shopping, paying for drinks and food, casino playing) and also to access their cabins. WOWBands are silicone-made, offered in different colors (black, blue, white, yellow) and can be used on other Royal Caribbean ships (need re-programming). They were first introduced on Quantum OTS as a complimentary amenity for all guests. Subsequently, RCI started charging for the WOWBands US$5 (available for purchase at the Guest Services desk). Junior Suite and above passengers receive their wristbands for free (placed in envelopes in the cabins).

Note: Through RCI's promotion "EAT-DRINK-PLAY" (offered in 2017-2019), passengers booked in Boardwalk/Central Park balcony cabins received new perks including complimentary food, beverages and exclusive activities. Boardwalk Balcony rooms (categories B1-B2) got for free one dinner for 4 (at Johnny Rockets/deck 6), the Royal Refreshment (drink package for 2) and a private Rock-Climbing-Wall family experience (on deck 7). Central Park Balcony rooms (categories C1-C2) got for free one lunch for 2 (at Giovanni's Table/deck 8), plus 1 bottle of red wine (in cabin) and private gambling lessons from an expert (at the Casino Lounge/deck 4).

On Symphony OTS, Royal Caribbean introduced the "Ultimate Family Suite" - a new cabin type (8-passenger, 2-bedroom loft suite sized 125 m2 / 1350 ft2). The new cabin type features an in-cabin slide (from the kids bedroom on the upper level down to the living room/lower level), floor-ceiling LEGO wall, air-hockey table, 2 hanging egg swing chairs, separate TV room (3D movies, popcorn machine, media library, video gaming consoles with games), large wraparound balcony (sized 20 m2 / 210 ft2, fitted with bumper pool table, small climbing wall, full-size whirlpool).

What does Category CB Mean?

Hi. Rebooking a February cruise to a later date and I noticed they now have Category CB - Connecting Ocean View Balcony. They charge more for this than standard balcony. What is the difference?  I’ve never seen a cruise line charge more for rooms just because they connect. I am mostly wondering because I would like to get two cabins next together that allow for opening up the balconies,  but I’m not sure whether you have to book a CB category in order to do this or whether they really are just charging more for connecting rooms now.

Whether or not the balcony dividers on adjacent rooms can (or will) be opened depends on which ship, and sometimes on which captain.

molly361

I just recently noticed that.  Like Orville said you can't count 100% on the balconies being able to be opened so if it is imperative that you have access to the other stateroom CB is the way to go  They are not the only ones though where you can possible have the dividers opened

RCI just started this - squeezing every $ possible.

Personally I think it's long overdue.  Those are desirable cabins often unavailable as a pair because someone accidentally booked one.

I, for one, am avoiding connected rooms, even though sometimes they're in a very desirable location.

firefly333

I was noticing on pr cabins on liberty seems like 90% connect. I had trouble finding one that didnt. So last night I looked at some later date sailings and on liberty the connecting pr cabins are almost $100 less ... maybe because there are so darn many of them.

My sailing same price for all pr s but fall 2021, the connecting cabins are all priced lower than non connecting so I guess i got a deal with non connecting.

Seriously? I view them as undesirable. The two times that I took a chance and booked guarentees I got connecting cabins both times. Fortunately, a quick phone call fixed the problem.

I think a John meant desirable by families looking for the connecting cabins.

Sunshine3601

They are great for obvious reasons but I avoid them as you can hear everything from the connecting room.  The last time I was in one I had some very annoying neighbors watching TV very loud every night till 2 or 3 am.    For newbies...you wont have that noise issue with non connecting cabins.

Seems odd that RCI would assign them for guarentees if they are in such demand by families.

Definitely, although now that they will be recategorized as CB I bet that will stop.

Ken is right, they are desireable for families, that's why they exist. I think they get booked by accident. You used to go look for connecting cabins and I swear by all that is holy,  they were always split up with no rhyme or reason.

And as Ken said, hopefully this will stop being a problem

The thing is, they're highly desirable by families WHO CAN GET BOTH ROOMS TOGETHER.   The problem is, when they weren't their own category, people would book a single room just based on location or category or whatever, without noticing it was a connecting room or needing a connecting room.   Once someone books just one of the two connecting rooms, the other connecting room becomes useless as a connecting room.  And since experienced cruisers tend to avoid connecting rooms, these odd one-off connecting rooms would frequently get assigned to guarantee fares because they are the leftover rooms when it came time to assign the remaining rooms.   Now that these are a specific category, hopefully they will be available to families wanting/needing connecting rooms.  I've always thought that they should be held aside and only sold in pairs until all other rooms are taken, similar to how handicap-accessible rooms are assigned only to those who meet the requirements, and only released for the general population after final payment.

Royal Caribbean crewman sentenced to 30 years in prison on child porn charges

A stateroom attendant on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas cruise ship who admitted to secretly installing cameras in private bathrooms, and sneaking into passengers’ rooms when they were showering so he could hide under their beds to record them getting out, was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in federal prison, prosecutors said.

Arvin Joseph Mirasol, 34, a citizen of the Philippines, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Melissa Damian after he had pleaded guilty to producing child pornography.

According to prosecutors, Mirasol was busted in late February after a passenger reported to ship’s security that he found a hidden camera under the sink in his bathroom. Mirasol, who was the attendant for the guest’s stateroom, was immediately detained until the ship docked at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and an investigation began.

Once he was found responsible, a search of his electronics revealed numerous videos of unclothed or partially clothed children who did not know they were being recorded. The children ranged in age from 2 to 17.

Mirasol admitted he had been placing cameras in passenger cabins since December 2023.

The home ports of Symphony of the Seas are in Miami and New York, according to the Royal Caribbean website.

Carta’s ill-fated secondaries business finally found a buyer

Stock-trading startup Public has acquired the brokerage accounts of Carta’s secondaries business, TechCrunch has confirmed. Carta, best known for its cap table management software, sits on a stockpile of data. One look at lovely Sitka and you'll know why Alexander Baranof, governor of the Russian American Company, decided to build his "castle" here. With views of island-studded waters and stately spruce forests reaching to the water's edge, Sitka is considered Alaska's most beautiful seaside town. Sitka's past is a unique blend of Tlingit culture and Russian history. Our historic and scenic community is situated on Baranof Island, nestled between forested mountains and the great Pacific Ocean, on the outer waters of Alaska's Inside Passage. Sitka offers a combination of Native culture, Russian history, and Alaskan wilderness which will provide a diverse and unequaled experience. Wildlife adds to Sitka's natural beauty. Our mild climate, rich habitat and relatively low human population make Sitka one of the best places to view wildlife. Nearby waters are a popular feeding ground for humpback whales in the late fall and early spring. Summertime provides a wonderful opportunity to view tufted puffins and other sea birds at St. Lazaria National Wildlife Refuge. While out on the ocean, you may also spot sea otters, sea lions and other marine wildlife. Sitka lies at the heart of the largest temperate rain forest in the world, the Tongass National Forest. Enjoy the fresh outdoors on well-marked mountain trails. Take to the water for a picturesque boat trip or kayaking adventure among nearby islands or charter a boat to nearby fishing grounds to fish for world-class salmon and halibut.

Royal Caribbean employee sentenced to 30 years in prison for hiding cameras to spy on guests, including underage girls

royal caribbean cruise cabin category

PORT EVERGLADES, FLA. (WSVN) - A 34-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to producing child pornography while working aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship , according to officials.

Arvin Joseph Mirasol, a stateroom attendant on the Symphony of the Seas, was sentenced in Miami federal court on Wednesday.

Mirasol, who is a citizen of the Philippines, was detained after a guest discovered a hidden camera in their bathroom on Feb. 25 and reported it to ship security, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release.

Authorities said that upon the ship’s arrival at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on March 3, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents searched Mirasol’s electronics, uncovering numerous videos of children in various stages of undress. One video reportedly showed Mirasol installing a camera in a guest’s bathroom.

Investigators revealed that Mirasol had been secretly recording passengers, including children as young as 2 years old, since December 2023, the USDOJ said.

According to investigators, he would enter guests’ rooms while they were showering and hide under their beds to record them exiting the shower.

Utopia of the Seas vs. Icon of the Seas: Comparing Royal Caribbean’s new cruise ships

Ashley Kosciolek

Dock Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas side-by-side, and you're likely to notice a couple things. The first is that as the largest and second- largest cruise ships in the world , respectively, they're both massive. The second is that, despite their similar size, they look a bit different.

If you're unfamiliar with the details of the vessels, it can be overwhelming to figure out which of these two behemoths is the better fit for your next sailing.

From onboard vibe and cabin options to entertainment, here are some of the key similarities and differences in a showdown of Utopia vs. Icon of the Seas.

royal caribbean cruise cabin category

Even though Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas are currently the world's two biggest cruise ships, there's still a size difference between the two.

At 250,800 gross registered tons, 20-deck Icon of the Seas carries 5,610 people on a double-occupancy basis (when there are two people booked in each cabin) and about 7,600 passengers when every berth is filled. That's in addition to 2,350 crew members.

While still incredibly large, the slightly smaller 18-deck, 236,473-ton Utopia of the Seas can accommodate 5,668 travelers at double occupancy and roughly 6,988 guests when it's full. Nearly 2,300 crew members work on board.

Although Icon of the Seas has two more decks than Utopia, it carries fewer people than Utopia does at double occupancy but more when it's full. That's because Royal Caribbean specifically designed Icon of the Seas for families, assuming that parents would share cabins with their children.

In the line's 2024 second-quarter earnings call, Royal Caribbean executives said the ship has been operating with a 132% load factor , meaning it routinely sails with more than two people — sometimes three, four or even five — per cabin.

royal caribbean cruise cabin category

To understand the layout of Utopia of the Seas vs. Icon, you'll first need to know about Royal Caribbean's neighborhood concept. Each distinct area of the ship groups popular themed offerings together in a layout that helps to control passenger flow.

The original vessels in the Oasis Class , to which Utopia of the Seas belongs, had seven neighborhoods, which have carried through to Utopia.

The seven neighborhoods are:

  • Central Park: An outdoor promenade with shops, bars and restaurants that's also home to more than 10,000 live plants — with a resident gardener — and inward-facing balcony cabins that overlook the space
  • The Boardwalk: A boardwalk-style open-air space with a hot dog stand, a candy and ice cream shop, arcade games, a carousel, inward-facing balcony cabins and the innovative wake-facing AquaTheater, which features high-diving shows
  • The Royal Promenade: An indoor social hub with a mall-like vibe where passengers will find a pub, a karaoke lounge, two cafes (including a Starbucks), retail outlets and guest services. Inward-facing cabins with windows overlook this neighborhood, and occasional parades and parties take place here.
  • Pool and Sports Zone: The place for active outdoor pursuits and watery fun, incorporating surf simulators , rock climbing walls, miniature golf, a sports court, a zip line, bars, the entrance to the Ultimate Abyss dry slide (which drops 10 decks to The Boardwalk), teen clubs, an arcade, grab-and-go casual dining, four pools and several hot tubs, as well as kids water play areas and waterslides
  • Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center: The place for all things related to health, wellness, fitness and pampering, featuring free-to-use exercise equipment, for-fee fitness classes and personal training, a sizable jogging track, Ping-Pong tables, and spa and salon services like massages, manicures, pedicures and hairstyling
  • Entertainment Place: A tucked-away cluster of indoor entertainment venues like casinos, a comedy club, a nightclub, the ship's main theater, an art gallery, and Studio B — a multipurpose space that houses ice skating, laser tag and theme parties
  • Youth Zone: The location for Adventure Ocean, Royal Caribbean's kids club, which encompasses activity and learning rooms and separate spaces for babies and toddlers, kids and tweens; also where passengers will find the escape room (on ships that have one)

As Royal Caribbean has evolved its ships over time, new neighborhoods have been added. In addition to the ones above, Utopia of the Seas has an eighth zone — the Suite Neighborhood. It affords access to a private sun deck with hot tubs, a dedicated lounge, a sit-down restaurant and 24-hour concierge service for passengers booked in the vessel's most expensive accommodations.

With the debut of Royal Caribbean's Icon Class , of which Icon of the Seas is a part, a few of the key areas have been removed, relocated and reimagined, making Icon feel a bit more segmented than Utopia of the Seas.

Like Utopia of the Seas, Icon of the Seas has eight neighborhoods, but only three of them — Central Park, the Royal Promenade and the Suite Neighborhood — are the same as the ones you'll find on Utopia.

Note: Although Icon of the Seas doesn't have the Youth Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center and Entertainment Place neighborhoods, the ship still offers the Adventure Ocean kids club, onboard spa and fitness facilities and a cluster of similar entertainment venues.

royal caribbean cruise cabin category

Brand-new neighborhoods on Icon include:

  • Surfside: A dedicated space for families with young children, offering family-friendly eateries and a bar with mocktails, a candy shop, an arcade, a carousel, a playground, kids splash areas and a wake-facing infinity pool; replaces The Boardwalk
  • AquaDome: A giant dome-like glass and steel structure with 220-degree ocean views that houses a now-indoor AquaTheater for high-diving and acrobatic shows and the AquaDome Market, Royal Caribbean's first food hall, as well as bars and a Royal Caribbean gift shop
  • Chill Island: Replaces the "pool" portion of the Pool and Sports Zone found on Oasis Class vessels; offers four pools — including one with a swim-up bar — sun loungers, hot tubs and cabanas for rent
  • Thrill Island: Replaces the "sports" portion of the Pool and Sports Zone; features staples like the rock climbing wall, FlowRider surf simulator, mini golf course and sports court. It also has a ropes course-style attraction and the largest water park at sea, which incorporates multiple waterslides.
  • The Hideaway: An adults-only area just below Thrill Island; provides a suspended infinity pool, loungers, hot tubs, a Champagne bar and a party atmosphere

The Royal Promenade has also had a bit of a facelift on Icon of the Seas. Deck 6, which used to overlook the space, now wraps completely around instead of only partially, and a giant three-deck light-up sphere called The Pearl has been added as part art installation and part structural support. It also provides a way for passengers to move between the two decks of the Royal Promenade. Walls of windows on either side bring lots of light into the space.

The Royal Promenade's lower deck no longer has the hydraulic "levitating" Rising Tide Bar, which has been removed, along with Cafe Promenade. Instead, the usual standalone Starbucks kiosk has moved into a more permanent venue, and the Pearl Cafe has been added one deck above.

You can find more information about changes to Central Park and the Suite Neighborhood in the "Dining" and "Cabins" sections below, respectively.

royal caribbean cruise cabin category

Although both ships do a great job of catering to all types of passengers, Icon of the Seas was designed specifically to appeal more heavily to families with the addition of the Surfside neighborhood, as well as a slew of cabins designed to sleep more than two people.

Meanwhile, because Utopia of the Seas is the first brand-new ship to exclusively sail short three- and four-night voyages, Royal Caribbean bills the vessel as the "World's Biggest Weekend." It's perfect for quick getaways, a fact that the line's executives say lends the ship a more party-hearty — but not uncouth — atmosphere.

If you're traveling with your children on Utopia, you'll still find plenty for them to do at the ship's water play areas and Adventure Ocean kids club , but you'll also find more live music than ever before. There's a heavy emphasis on parties , too, including one with a frat party theme and another — a pool party — with music, giveaways and guns that shoot Champagne.

royal caribbean cruise cabin category

Both Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas have standard inside cabins, ocean-view options with windows, rooms with balconies and a variety of suites, including huge ones for families with amenities that are every kid's dream.

Icon debuted with 14 new cabin and suite types to choose from out of 28 total accommodation types. Many are family-friendly rooms that sleep four passengers; some can accommodate six or eight. In total, 313 cabins and suites are listed specifically as family-focused accommodations, but most standard rooms can sleep more than two people.

Of particular note on Icon of the Seas are new Panoramic Suites, which exist in part of the AquaDome. They offer natural light through part of the structure, which serves as a floor-to-ceiling window in each cabin.

Representing a change to the Suite Neighborhood, new Icon Loft Suites are two-deck-high accommodations, each with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large balcony with a private dining area and floor-to-ceiling windows.

And, finally, the Ultimate Family Townhouse is the pinnacle of accommodations onboard. The three-deck-high suite is an evolution of the Ultimate Family Suite that wowed guests on Oasis Class ships. In addition to kid and adult sleeping areas, this 1,772-square-foot top-level suite features an in-suite slide, a movie-viewing room, a karaoke machine and spacious indoor and outdoor living spaces.

The only major cabin addition on Utopia of the Seas is a group of Solarium Suites. These bright, airy and spacious digs were added above The Solarium, the ship's tranquil adults-only space.

Dining experiences

royal caribbean cruise cabin category

All of your favorite Royal Caribbean dining staples — including Chops Grille steakhouse , Izumi sushi, Giovanni's Italian, Sorrento's pizza , Playmakers sports bar , Park Cafe, El Loco Fresh Mexican and the Windjammer buffet — have reprised their roles on both Utopia of the Seas and Icon of the Seas.

But it's the new additions that truly stand out on both of these ships.

On Utopia of the Seas, cruisers can enjoy grab-and-go items from the Spare Tire food truck or immerse themselves in for-fee train-themed dinner theater at Royal Railway: Utopia Station. Additional extra-cost options run the gamut from affordable shaved ice to ultrahigh-end Japanese food at Omakase, an eight-course experience that's limited to just six people at a cost of $130 per person.

If you're searching for an exclusive dining option on Icon of the Seas, check out the Empire Supper Club, which mixes an eight-course dinner with music for a cost of $200 per person. A major new addition to the Central Park neighborhood, the restaurant seats only 38 people, and it has an art deco theme that's also a nod to New York.

Or, if you're celebrating a milestone, you can rent your very own space at Celebration Table. It costs a flat fee of $999 for up to 14 people, and it's the same price regardless of how many of the seats you fill. It's located in the ship's Hooked Seafood restaurant, but you can choose the cuisine you'd like the chef to prepare. The list includes American, Italian, Asian and seafood.

New family-friendly options abound, including Pier 7, a specialty restaurant with a California theme. It's free for kids and a la carte for adults, and the menu serves items like Baja fish tacos, Korean fried chicken and warm toffee chocolate cake.

The new AquaDome Market is Royal Caribbean's first food hall experience and offers a variety of cuisines like Mediterranean, Asian, mac 'n' cheese, salads, sandwiches and desserts free of charge. Or check out the Pearl Cafe for complimentary small bites and coffee drinks.

Entertainment

royal caribbean cruise cabin category

Both Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas present a variety of theater shows, comedy, high-diving acts, Royal Promenade parades and themed parties, as well as a ton of live music and daily activities to keep passengers busy.

As for what's different, the AquaTheater on Icon of the Seas has moved from The Boardwalk neighborhood — Deck 6, aft, on Oasis Class ships like Utopia — to the new AquaDome, which is indoors instead of open-air. Performances on both ships involve synchronized swimming, dancing, high-diving, acrobatics and more. Utopia's show, dubbed "Aqua80," incorporates songs from the '80s but with a modern twist, and "Aqua Action!," performed on Icon, has a movie theme.

Similarly, both vessels have their own ice rinks with specially developed ice-skating performances. On Icon of the Seas, the Absolute Zero ice rink, found on Deck 5 in the Royal Promenade, replaces Studio B, which is on Deck 4 on Utopia of the Seas. The new and improved version on Icon is round instead of rectangular, and the shows also differ in theme.

On Icon, "Starburst" is themed around the elements (carbon, helium, etc.). Group, solo and pairs skating numbers are combined with next-level juggling by a character dubbed "The Starman." On Utopia, "Youtopia" presents a blend of contemporary and retro music, gorgeous costumes (some that look like candy) and nearly flawless execution.

In the main theater, passengers can expect to find "All In" on Utopia. The show celebrates some of history's most iconic parties and music festivals like Studio 54 and Burning Man. However, if Broadway-style shows are what you seek, Icon of the Seas might be more your speed; the ship features performances of "The Wizard of Oz" on board.

As mentioned, Utopia of the Seas is focused more on parties than any other Royal Caribbean ship. Onboard soirees include Senses, a pool deck party where cruisers will find house music and sunset scenes on the giant outdoor movie screen; ReZolution, where passengers wear white and become living art through a series of high-tech projections; and Plunge, a daytime pool party

And, finally, what would any Royal Caribbean cruise be without a Royal Promenade parade? On Utopia, you can join in "The Effectors Homecoming Parade." It's a departure from the full show "The Effectors" performed in the Royal Theater on Icon of the Seas. The homecoming parade on Utopia picks up the storyline at the end of the theater production when (spoiler alert) the band of superheroes — Captain Viz, Lume, Pixel and Reverb — defeat their archnemesis, Crash, and his sidekick, Burn.

Itineraries and pricing

royal caribbean cruise cabin category

One of the biggest areas in which the ships differ is itinerary. While Utopia of the Seas focuses strictly on three- and four-night Bahamas and Western Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral near Orlando, Icon of the Seas runs weeklong voyages to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from Miami .

Both ships include calls on Perfect Day at CocoCay , the line's private island, on most of their routes. Utopia visits mainly Nassau in the Bahamas, Perfect Day and Cozumel in Mexico with little deviation.

Due to its longer schedules, Icon offers a wider variety of port calls, including stops at St. Kitts and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands; St. Maarten, the Dutch side of St. Martin; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Roatan, Honduras; Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico; plus Labadee , Haiti, another of Royal Caribbean's private destinations, depending on the itinerary.

In terms of pricing, because Icon of the Seas offers seven-night cruises while Utopia's are only three and four nights, the former will cost more overall to book.

When I compared per-night pricing just before publication, the least expensive Icon of the Seas sailing I could find was $1,186 per person for a seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailing in January 2025. That works out to $169 per person, per night, for an inside cabin — not a bad price, considering Icon of the Seas is the industry's largest (and also one of its newest) vessels.

Comparatively, the least expensive Utopia of the Seas voyage I located for the same time period was $593 per person for a four-night Bahamas and Perfect Day sailing. That's $148 per person, per night — slightly less than Icon of the Seas' cheapest nightly rate.

Rates will vary by sailing date, destination and cabin type, but due to demand, both ships are on the higher end of Royal Caribbean's pricing. You should expect to pay a premium for cabins on both Icon and Utopia.

Bottom line

royal caribbean cruise cabin category

When it comes to Utopia of the Seas vs. Icon of the Seas, they're both large ships that have plenty on board for passengers of all ages to do, see, eat and drink. Both have excellent kids clubs, phenomenal entertainment, a plethora of bars and restaurants and a wide selection of cabin types.

If you're looking for a short cruise, a weekend getaway or a sailing that will cost you less overall, or if you want more of a party atmosphere, Utopia of the Seas should be your pick. Of the two, it's also the best ship if you're a fan of the original Oasis Class neighborhoods.

However, prospective Royal Caribbean cruisers will likely feel more at home on Icon of the Seas if they're cruising with young children and want a dedicated family space, have a larger budget or want a weeklong voyage, or prefer to sail on the absolute largest cruise ship afloat.

Perverted Royal Caribbean cruise ship worker gets 30 years for secretly filming kids

A perverted Royal Caribbean cruise ship employee who planted hidden cameras in guests’ rooms — and even hid under beds to record young kids getting out of the shower — has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Arvin Joseph Mirasol, a 34-year-old Philippine national who worked as a cabin attendant on the Symphony of the Seas, was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to producing child sexual abuse material — including kids as young as 2, according to the Justice Department.

Mirasol was detained at sea on Feb. 25 after a girl found a camera “affixed to the counter underneath the sink” one day after the cruise ship set sail from Southern Florida.

He was arrested in March by Broward County deputies after the Symphony of the Seas returned to Port Everglades, originally on state charges. He was also fired from his job.

Investigators said Mirasol admitted to spying on young girls ever since he started working for the cruise ship in December 2023 — saying, “I want to control it, but I can’t.”

He also admitted to placing hidden cameras in multiple rooms, according to court documents.

Mirasol would enter guests’ rooms while they were in the shower and hide under their beds so he could secretly record them exiting the shower, investigators said.

His electronic devices contained numerous videos of children in various stages of undress — focusing on the children’s genitals.

One of the videos even showed Mirasol installing a camera in a guest’s bathroom, officials said.

Investigators determined that the children in the videos were as young as 2 and as old as 17.

One video featured a girl who was about 10 years old, undressing and showering with her genitals “clearly visible” and “the focus of the video,” according to a federal criminal complaint obtained by Local 10.

Authorities said they also found multiple voyeurism-related searches on Mirasol’s phone, including “teen on bed.”

When asked how he decided which rooms to target, investigators said Mirasol told them, “If I like who is in that room, I place it,” and said he would choose teenage girls over the age of 16.

Royal Caribbean previously said it “immediately reported this to law enforcement and terminated the crew member” once it knew of the allegations.

“We have zero tolerance for this unacceptable behavior,” a spokesperson for the crew company said soon after Mirasol’s arrest.
