Exploring Rishikesh On A Bike

Sacred spot and yoga capital of the world, Rishikesh is so many things all rolled into one. With the holy river Ganga winding its way through the town, it is a pilgrimage site for Hindus. The Beatles’ famed visit to Rishikesh in the late 60’s rocketed it to fame and is now a destination for Beatles fans and hippies. Rishikesh is also a popular destination for bikers, and makes for a great end to a road trip. We’ve written all about exploring Rishikesh on bike so you can make the most of your time here.

Best Time To Visit Rishikesh

The best time to visit Rishikesh is from October to February. This is the winter season, and the weather is ideal for biking around and exploring this interesting town. Temperatures can go from a minimum of 8°C to a maximum of 25°C. The winds are chilly, making it perfect to roam around. Rishikesh can be visited in the summer, but it can get quite hot with temperatures reaching as high as 39°C. It is also humid, and temperatures peak in the month of June.

Rishikesh at its cheapest is in the monsoon, from June to September. However, avoid trying to bike to Rishikesh or biking around Rishikesh during this season. Rishikesh receives heavy rainfalls which on occasion has also caused landslides.

Places To Visit In Rishikesh

Laxman jhoola.

This iconic 94-year old bridge is one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Rishikesh. It is said to be the spot that the Hindu deity Laxman crossed the Ganges on a jute rope. Unfortunately, this iron suspension bridge was closed down last year. Motorists are no longer allowed to ride across on it. Nevertheless, the spot offers unbeatable views, and the rush of the mighty Ganga is sure to leave you speechless. You can also head on to the Ram Jhoola, a few miles away from the Laxman Jhoola.

The Ram Jhoola has a verified parking facility so if that’s something you’re concerned about, we recommend heading to the Ram Jhoola first. Having parked your bikes safely, you can stroll up to Laxman Jhoola. It is around a 25-minute walk but with nature on all sides and unbeatable views it is sure to be pleasant.

Neergarh Waterfall

Rishikesh is nestled in the lap of nature, and Neergarh waterfall is one spot to admire the natural beauty. Three different drops comprise the Neergarh waterfall, all combining to make an unmissable phenomenon. You will ride on NH 7 for around 30 minutes until you start to spot signs leading you to the falls. Following the road leads you to a small parking lot where you can safely park your bikes. After paying the Rs.30 entry fee, you can head off to see the falls which are a short trek away.

Neelkanth Mahadev Temple

Located at a height of 1680 mts above sea level, the Neelkanth Mahadev temple offers some stunning views. Visit this site for its religious significance, and if not for that, then nature is sure to turn you all into her worshippers!

The Neelkanth Madadev temple is easily accessible by road. A pleasant 1 hour 15-minute ride from Rishikesh that winds through the woods, you reach a parking lot. A 1.5 kilometre walk later you will reach the temple.

Try to make an early start for the temple as it can attract a lot of crowds, especially in peak season. Additionally, leave a little before 5 pm on the way back but no later. The road you take has low visibility until you reach the highway.

The Beatles’ Ashram

Chaurasi Kutia Ashram is the name of this place for devotees of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the ‘Beatles’ Ashram’ is the name for devotees of the Beatles. Either way, this spot is a must-see when in Rishikesh, and is a perfect destination for exploring Rishikesh by bike. The 1960’s visit of the world-famous English band placed Rishikesh on the world map and it has been gaining attention for its yoga and ashrams ever since. The Ashram is a 30-minute walk from the Laxman Jhula, and an even shorter bike ride. It is an even closer 1 km from the Ram Jhula.

As the Ashram is officially under the Rajaji national park, you will have to pay an entrance fee of Rs. 150 per head for Indians. There is also a vehicular charge of Rs 250. Once you’re done with the ashram you can ride around the park and explore its natural glory. Make sure you go there early as the park shuts down in the early evening.

Triveni Ghat

Rishikesh remains foremost a town of religious significance. It’s evening poojas and aartis are would-famous, and Triveni Ghat is the place to witness this. Triveni ghat is the spot that marks the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswathi rivers. The Maha Aarti is performed here every evening and is a sight worth witnessing. While a fee is charged for those who wish to partake in the aarti, you can also just stand witness to the proceedings. It is within the town itself and easy to access. Additionally, there is a pay and park facility in close proximity to the site.

Things To Remember

Rishikesh is an important city that sees a lot of tourism, so you will never really find the city empty of tourists. At the same time, its inherent beauty and charm is sure to make you forget the annoyance of crowds.  Apart from visiting the locations above, you can also visit one of the ashrams dotted around the town. They are renowned for their yoga, meditation and ayurveda treatments. These can be especially rejuvenating after a day of riding around Rishikesh. The roads in and around the town are quite fit for bikes, as renting out motorbikes and cycles is actually fairly common here.

If you’re riding to a more distant location, make sure you’ve hired the right kind of bike and you’re all stocked up on petrol. Rishikesh is also famous for adventure activities, but ensure you park your bikes someplace safe before embarking on any one of them. There are pay and park facilities available and though some may seem pricey, it is the safest bet for your bike.

Home to ashrams and adventure activities galore, Rishikesh is quite the renowned town. Sounds of bells can be heard on the wind, as sadhus perform the nightly Ganga aarti. There are several bike rentals available around Rishikesh , but we can help you find the best one. What are you waiting for? It’s time to hear the roar of your bikes echo down the lanes of Rishikesh.

Rishikesh

Lakshman Jhula happens to be one of the famous hanging bridges across the holy river Ganga. The jhula is a link in between two important villages in Rishikesh. It connects the Tapovan village in Tehri Garhwal and Jonk village in Pauri Garhwal. The bridge is made up of iron and it is almost 450 feet long, which is suspended at an elevation of almost 70 feet above the river. Lakshman Jhula has been one of the centres for tourist attraction since its inception for its amazing association of the Hindu Mythology. As per the popular Hindu mythology, Ramayan, it is believed that Lord Ram and his brother Lakshman had crossed the Ganga river at the same place, where the bridge has been built. The bridge was opened for public in the year 1929. In recent times, in order to boost the tourist footfall, many other developments have been carried out around the famous Lakshman Jhula. Tourists now love to spend a considerable amount of time in these places in the course of their Rishikesh Trip. You can not only visit the Lakshman Jhula, but you can also spend time in some of the other nearby tourist attractions like Tera Manzil Temple, Ram Jhula, and Lakshman temple. Let us get to know more about this religious place of worship.History of Lakshman Jhula- Lakshman Jhula has its significance in the most popular Hindu Mythology, Ramayana. As per the tales, Lord Ram and Lakshman had crossed the river Ganga at this place. The duo crossed the river Ganga with the help of just two ropes. In order to praise this act of fearlessness, Lakshman Jhula was built. This 284 feet long suspended bridge was the main point of contact between the villages until the year 1889. However, one of the floods in the year 1924 completely washed away the bridge. Initially the Lakshman Jhula was made up of jute, however, after the floods, it was replaced by a much stronger and sturdier iron bridge in the year 1939. The reconstruction was instigated in the same place and the name of the bridge was also not changed as per the significances. The bridge now stands tall above the river Ganga and happens to be one of the major tourist attractions in the tourism corridor of Rishikesh. However, the Lakshman Jhula is no more used for communication from 12th July 2019 for safety concerns. This bridge is almost 96 years old and it is not capable of handling the load of the current traffic. In order to preserve this iconic tourist attraction, one more bridge has been built and the Lakshman Jhula stands as a mere tourist attraction near to it.

Ram Jhula

Ram Jhula is one of the most iconic places in Rishikesh and if you are planning a pilgrimage to the city, or just visiting for a holiday, you must stop by this iconic bridge. It is a suspension bridge, built entirely out of iron and the length of the bridge is around 450 feet. It was constructed in the year 1986, by the PWD. The bridge is located over the holy Ganga river and it connects Sivananda Nagar in Muni Ki Reti, in the district of Tehri Garhwal in the west to Swargashram in the district of Pauri Garhwal, in the east. This bridge can be found in the state of Uttarakhand, approximately 3 kilometres away from the main town of Rishikesh. It is a comfortable walking distance from Rishikesh, and if you like long walks in the midst of stunning scenery then you can walk the length of the bridge as well. People can also traverse the bridge with bikes or cycles. A number of holy ashrams and Hindu religious centres and temples can be found lining the side of the bridge. These ashrams encompass the true essence of Rishikesh, with their peace, hospitality and piety. Another well-known bridge in the area is the Lakshman Jhula, which is lengthier than Ram Jhula and is situated 2 kilometres upriver, on the banks of the Ganga. One of the most memorable experiences you can enjoy at the Ram Jhula is overlooking the holy city of Rishikesh from the bridge itself in all its natural and historical glory, surrounded by the river and the mighty mountains. History of Ram JhulaThe famous Ram Jhula was initially a bridge made of very strong jute ropes, tightly intertwined to give it strength and to help it bear the weight of passers-by. It did not have any pillars to provide structural support in the beginning. Later, it was re-constructed with iron in the year 1986 by the PWD under government supervision. Since it is located in the spiritual and holy city of Rishikesh, the name of the bridge is derived from the Aryan King- Lord Ram- the protagonist of the epic Ramayana. The other famous bridge on the river is the Lakshman Jhula. The story goes that in the era of Ram’s reign, Lakshman had crossed the Ganga with the help of two ropes. To commemorate this mythological event, the Lakshman Jhula was constructed with ropes, in the year 1889. Therefore, a gesture of sibling love and camaraderie between the two brothers- Ram and Lakshman, the second bridge was named ‘Ram, indicative of the divine bond between the two brothers. About Ram Jhula MarketKeeping in mind the vast number of tourists and pilgrims who visit the place every year, there are innumerable shops and markets near the starting and ending point of the bridge. The Ram Jhula Market can be found in the point where the bridge ends, where you can find shops selling everything imaginable- from groceries to mementoes and religious tokens. You can find religious sculptures, statues and framed pictures of different gods and goddesses, dress materials, jewellery and other artefacts available in the markets. One can buy authentic semi-precious stones and gems at reasonable prices from here as well. Shoppers can choose from beautiful, ethnic, locally sourced handicraft items to bright and comfortable cotton clothes like sarees, lehengas and cholis, all at reasonable prices.

Photo of Nomadic Naveen

Its always fun to get on the road with your best friends and that too on the motorcycles.

While a trip with friends is always a good idea, there is also a very strong case for taking a solo ride.

It is an experience that every biker should relish at least once in his life.

I, Naveen here going to share my solo experience with you -

Since long I was thinking to go on hills in winters, to spend quality time with myself and a bike ride.

It was 3rd February,2017(Friday), sitting in my room holed up in my quilt I decided to leave for Nainital next day early morning. I started preparing for it -

3rd Feb, Friday , 10:00PM

I was all set with my preparations. Only few dark hours were left in between before I could hit the road.

All of a sudden I thought of checking weather of Nainital and found forecast of rain on the weekend over there. Mood got spoiled but the very next moment I changed the destination to Rishikesh :) where the forecast was of clear bright sky.

This is the beauty of solo riding. The feeling of liberty is what we live for. Since you are on your own, you have the biggest freedom in the world - The Freedom of Choice.

You can go anywhere you want, stop anywhere, eat anything and just do things at your own pace.

4th Feb, Saturday , 4:00AM

I got up 30Mins before scheduled time due to excitement :) Prepared good ginger tea and gave final touch to my back pack to be carried.

Route that I had to follow was - Gurgaon - Delhi - Ghaziabad - Meerut - Muzaffarnagar - Roorkee - Haridwar - Rishikesh

Total distance - 275Kms

Finally at 5:30 I started my journey. I was riding in dark and silence; feeling and content arising within me was awesome. As these were early hours so there was no traffic and very soon I crossed Delhi and Ghaziabad. But as I approached NH33 it was storm of fog there; Dense fog; literally I could see fog hitting me. Visibility was around 5-7 feet. I was hardly able to see the road. My jacket was completely wet due to fog. It was scary that time and lot of thoughts were running in my mind. But I continued slowly; This struggle was of 30KMs and I covered this distance in around 90mins.

As numbers were increasing on bike trip meter weather was getting fine. I crossed Meerut and took first break near Muzaffarnagar 150Km from Gurgaon. It was 8:20 AM.

I had masala tea and stuffed paratha. I stayed here around 40Mins and started again by 9AM. Rishikesh was still 120KMs away from here.

Roads are good till Muzaffarnagar, after that Road was not in good shape due to heavy constructions going on and off the Road;So Crossing Roorkee was very exhausting due to heavy traffic and all that.

another halt I took after Roorkee at 11:15AM. Rishikesh is 50KMs from here; After a tea break I was again energized; Being in Rishikesh after couple of hours was creating enthusiasm in me.

Roads taste was getting bitter :) but same time feeling happy seeing bike shockers performance :P

Finally crossed Haridwar and entered into Rishikesh at 12.30PM.

I wanted to stay at river side camps so I directly reached to Shivpuri (16km ahead to Rishikesh); 16Kms you need to drive in mountains.

These 16km drive was refreshing; I was surrounded by highly soaring mountains the umbrella of clouds side-by-side ready to rain anytime in the valley.

I reached Shivpuri and contacted some adventure agencies for camp stay and then get know now a days there are no river side camps due to government new policies to keep The Ganga clean;

I was told to stay at Jungle camps; These are bit away from the river and was on hills. I agreed and went there to check the camp quality. I was about to finalize this but I checked my mobile and found no signals. I confirmed with agency guy regarding signals and found info of only a few network providers signal availability in that area.

It was big headache to me as I can not be unreachable specially when riding solo :)

I decided to go back to Tapovan (place between Rishikesh and Shivpuri; where mobile signals were full) found decent hotel there;

parked my bike; untied my back pack and entered into my room. It was 2:00PM. I had my lunch here; took bath and left to roam in Rishikesh with my DSLR and tripod.

Riding the bike on Laxman jhoola was giving goosebumps. looking down at river Ganga was thrilling. I spent great time; It was a very soothing experience sitting beside the calm almighty river Ganges. Being alone at such peaceful and spiritual environment gives you a lot of Me time. It’s the time to look at the past, think of the future and live in the present. Talking to yourself will give you a completely different perspective to life. You will learn a lot of things about yourself that were hidden in the commotion of daily life.

My next target was to experience The Ganga Aarti, I reached Parmarth Niketan Aashram on time and waited for the evening Ganga Aarti to start. As the preparations were in full force, I just sat at the banks, admiring the immense energy the Ganga river possessed. I couldn’t help but thank nature for the holy Ganga river, a source for well-being of mankind. The sun was finally about to disappear and the evening Ganga Aarti had just started. Aarti starts at the time of sunset. Depending on the season, the timings can differ. Make sure you reach Parmarth Niketan Aashram around sunset to witness the spectacular event and find a decent place to observe the Aarti. When I reached the Aashram, hundreds of devotees had gathered. As the sun was setting in the backdrop, the atmosphere turned dynamic due to loud chants of spiritual music. The devotees settled comfortably as the evening Aarti started, offering prayers to Almighty Ganga river.

The atmosphere was electric with spirituality and the exuberance was rampant amidst the attentive devotees.

As the prayers ended, the devotees proceeded towards Ganga river to offer prayers and lit a magnificent lamp which would swim in the holy river.

After seeking blessings from the river, I walked out of the Aashram premises.

Witnessing the spectacle of Ganga evening Aarti was a blissful experience. The melody of ringing bells and the sparkling Ganga river due to the brightly lit lamps culminates to form a unforgettable experience. I was not at all tired any more; feeling rejuvenating myself. I spent few more hours in perfect blend of Spirituality and Nature; Had my dinner and came back to hotel.

5th Feb, Sunday

I got up at 7:00AM; came out of hotel started walking on road; cool morning breeze ! pleasant weather !! This is all I always wish to be at.

I came to hotel got ready and left for Neer Garh waterfall. It is near to Tapovan only; Entry fees is 30rs per person. You need to drive on muddy road for few KMs.

Best part is you need not to walk; you can take your CAR/BIKE till waterfall (Level 0). A steep climb of almost 70 steps takes you to level 1 of the fall with natural pond. As you climb higher the falls appear bigger and scenic. There was a small shop for tea and Maggie just beside the waterfall. You are in lap of Himalayas, waterfall and a cup of tea :) Whatelse you want.

After spending couple of hours there I came back to Hotel; had my lunch and checked out at 12PM. Night 8:30 I was in Gurgaon:) . These are lifetime memories which I definitely would like to repeat with new destination.

Riding Solo is difficult, especially if you are doing it for the first time. It is the feeling of unknown. There are a lot of apprehensions, what if I get bored, what if there is a breakdown and the list goes on.

You are just not sure of what you will experience. But once you have planned your trip and take the plunge, being alone will be the last thing on your mind.

You will come back more refreshed and empowered. A good solo ride will give you the strength to tackle more difficulties in life.

So what are you waiting for? Go Ahead, Pack your Bag, mount it on the Bike and Taste Freedom.

Wish you good luck !!

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCES

RenTrip Gonna be My First Choice Forever

It has been an awesome experience for me when I got to roam places like Dipor Bil, Kamakhya Temple, Umanadna temple and many more places on my way to Dispur. Before I started the journey I wasn't sure I would get chance to visit and these all beautiful places....yeah they truly are..... Coz i wasn't acquainted there and I wasn't having the confidence to even think of visiting these many places. It was so affordable and friendly that no one can even imagine unless gives a shot to RenTrip. Once again I recommend to all my dear bike lovers to go for RenTrip.

Trip to ASSAM and MEGHALAYA!

We had booked two bikes (Pulsar 180 & 150) for my ASSAM and MEGHALAYA trip from Rentrip Guwahati. The bikes were very well maintained and perfectly clean when they handed the key. So no trouble with the bike at any place ..Which made the whole trip tension free. Even the bike renting was so easy within 30 min all formalities were over All the staffs of Rentrip were very cooperative. I'd be happy to rent from them again & I would recommend anybody who wants to feel the roads of ASSAM and MEGHALAYA by self-driving go for Rentrip.
