Besides this, it’s also a great place to head to if you want to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the rich traditions and culture of the indigenous Ibaloi people who inhabit the area.

Nestled among the mountains, the bustling market town of Bontoc is full of life and is a pleasant place to spend a day or two before you continue to Mainit, Maligcong, or Kalinga. As it is mainly quite agricultural and rural, there is not all that much to see and do in town other than enjoying the atmosphere and learn a bit about the local Bontoc people’s rich heritage and culture.

The best time of year to visit is in April when the Lang-Ay Festival takes place, and everyone dresses up in traditional clothes. Other than this, the two main attractions of note are the impressive Stone Agricultural Calendar of Bontoc and the magnificent Petroglyphs of Alab, which can be found carved into the mountain wall.

9. Bolinao [SEE MAP]

Blessed with beautiful beaches, sparkling waterfalls, rugged rock formations, and cavernous cave complexes, Bolinao is a treat to visit, and its remote location means you’re unlikely to see any other tourists around. While its many natural wonders are a delight to explore, Bolinao also has some interesting historical sights on show, such as the impressive looking St. James Church and distinctive white lighthouse.

The highlight, however, is Patar White Beach, which is perfect for kicking back and relaxing on. Every evening, a glorious sunset paints the sea a majestic set of oranges, yellows, and reds. An idyllic place to spend a relaxed holiday, Bolinao is well worth the effort of getting there.

With some of the best breaks in the country, San Juan (La Union) is a surfer’s dream, with beginners and experts alike heading to the laidback town to try out its epic waves and swells. Much of life in town revolves around surfing. While wandering around, you’ll come across lots of surf shops, while a number of chilled out beachside bars and surf schools line the shore.

Although the town’s beach is pleasant enough to hang out on, there really isn’t all that much to do in San Juan if you’re not into surfing; it is not without reason that it’s known as the Surfing Capital of the Northern Philippines.

The highest peak in the whole of Luzon, Mount Pulag towers imperiously over its surroundings. It’s easy to see why various indigenous people consider it to be sacred. Lying at the heart of the national park of the same name, Mount Pulag is the third-highest mountain in the Philippines and attracts lots of mountain climbers and hikers. With many arresting landscapes to enjoy and plenty of fauna and flora scattered about its various habitats, the national park is a delight to explore. Camping overnight is particularly rewarding, as seeing both the sun set and rise over the stunning scenery is simply magical.

Known for its famous hanging coffins that are attached to cliff faces for all to see, the small town of Sagada is a very chilled out place, with lots for you to see and do besides its macabre yet strangely mesmerizing monuments.

Set in a beautiful location amongst the mountains, Sagada is an outdoor adventurer’s dream. If you are feeling intrepid, you can go whitewater rafting down rapids, rappeling down cliffs, and exploring caves. For those more into less adrenaline-focused activities, hiking here is incredible. In the village of Kabayan, it’s possible to hike up to a couple of mountaintop caves to see ancient mummies. Kabayan also provides access to Mount Pulag, the highest mountain in Luzon.

There is plenty of things to see and do in Northern Luzon, most notably some amazing rafting, trekking and surfing. It's also a bit of a cultural honey pot with the famous hanging coffins of Sagada and the centuries-old human mummies found in Kabayan.

These are the best things to do in Northern Luzon.

#1 Surf in San Juan

A dramatic crescent with huge waves, the coast just north of San Juan in the barangay of Urbiztondo is a prime surfing beach. Most of its resorts have surfboards to rent and offer tuition for an additional charge.

For experienced surfers, there are two breaks in Urbiztondo, one a beach break in front of the main huddle of resorts and the other the Monaliza point break at the northern end of the beach.

The best spot for beginners is the Cement Factory break in the nearby barangay of Bacnotan. The peak season is September to March; at other times there may be no waves but you can get significant discounts on accommodation.

#2 Go back in time in Vigan

An unmissable part of any North Luzon itinerary, Vigan, is one of the oldest towns in the Philippines. Lying on the western bank of the Mestizo River, it was in Spanish times an important political, military, cultural and religious centre.

The old town is characterized by its cobbled streets and some of the finest colonial architecture in the country, mixing Mexican, Chinese and Filipino features. Many of the old buildings are still lived in, others are used as curio shops, and a few have been converted into museums or hotels.

The attractions are within walking distance of one another, with Plaza Burgos the most obvious reference point, and, adding to the old-world atmosphere, some streets are open only to pedestrians – unusual in the Philippines – and romantic horse-drawn kalesas.

#3 Explore Ilocos Norte's huge sand dunes

The coastline west of Laoag is a sight to behold. More like desert than beach, it measures almost 1km across at some points and reaches as far as the eye can see, fringed by huge sand dunes.

The area has become a favourite among Manila film crews; the Suba dunes to the south – close to the Fort Ilocandia resort – are where Oliver Stone shot segments of Born on the Fourth of July.

#4 Trek in the Cordillera

Since the road network is poor in many parts of the Cordillera, and there are so many jungle-clad peaks and hidden valleys, trekking is the only way to see some of the region’s secrets: burial caves, indigenous villages and hidden waterfalls.

Gentle day-hikes are possible, particularly in the main tourist areas of Banaue and Sagada, but there are also plenty of two- or three-day treks that take you deep into backwaters.

Most of the best trails are around Sagada, Banaue, Bontoc, Tabuk and Tinglayan. In each of these towns, you’ll find a tourist office or town hall where someone will be able to help arrange guides.

#5 Discover centuries-old human mummies in Kabayan

Kabayan came to the attention of the outside world in the early twentieth century when a group of mummies, possibly dating back as far as 2000 BC, was discovered in the surrounding caves.

The history of the Kabayan mummies is still largely oral. It is even uncertain when the last mummy was created; according to staff at the town’s museum, mummification was attempted most recently in 1907 but the wrong combination of herbs was used.

It’s possible that the last successful mummification was in 1901, of the great-grandmother of former village mayor Florentino Merino.

Be sure to visit Opdas Cave at the southern end of Kabayan village. It contains around two hundred skulls and bones estimated to be up to a thousand years old, discovered in a pile but now arranged.

Nobody knows why they were buried together, but one theory is that they died as a result of an epidemic.

#6 See the hanging coffins of Sagada

The small town of Sagada, 160km north of Baguio, has long attracted curious visitors. Part of the appeal derives from its famous hanging coffins and a labyrinth of caves used by the ancients as burial sites. But Sagada also has a reputation as a remote and idyllic hideaway where people live a simple life well away from civilization.

The landscape here is almost alpine and the inhabitants are mountain people, their faces shaped not by the sun and sea of the lowlands, but by the thin air and sharp glare of altitude.

Sagada only began to open up as a destination when it got electricity in the early 1970s, and intellectuals – internal refugees from the Marcos dictatorship – flocked here to write and paint. They didn’t produce much of note - it's said that this is perhaps because they spent much of their time drinking tapuy (the local rice wine).

European hippies followed, as did the military, who thought the turistas were supplying funds for an insurgency. While the town doesn’t offer a lot to do, you’ll find plenty of activities in the surrounding area.

#7 Explore the rice terraces of Banaue

Most people know the rice fields of Bali , or Chiang Mai in Thailand . But one of the most impressive rice fields, or terraces actually, can be found in the Philippines. Banaue is a municipality located in the province of Ifugao in the Philippines.

It is famous for its stunning rice terraces, which are often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." The terraces were built by the Ifugao people over 2,000 years ago and are still in use today for agriculture. Banaue is also home to several indigenous communities, and you can learn about their rich culture and traditions through various activities such as weaving workshops and cultural performances.

The town itself is small and quaint, but there are several accommodations available for visitors who want to explore the area.

There is a wide variety of accommodation in Northern Luzon, from little fan-cooled nipa huts on the beaches and shaded open-fronted huts to lovely beach resorts. Here’s where to stay.

The Zambales coast

Along The Zambales coast, travellers tend to head for the resorts of San Antonio-Pundaquit, the surfers’ hangouts of San Narciso, or the beachside Botolan midrange stays.

The Lingayen Gulf

The accommodation options in Lucap are largely uninspiring, so if you’re staying in the area for a few days, consider basing yourself in Bolinao . You can camp overnight on Governor’s Island, Children’s Island and Quezon Island.

Ilocos province

Vigan has some charming accommodation : old colonial hotels, mansions, and boutique stays.

Resorts around Pagudpud are a little pricier than similar establishments elsewhere. It’s always worth asking for a discount. Budget travellers should consider a homestay behind the main resorts on Saud Beach.

The Northeast

All the best accommodation in the northeast is in Baler, or around the beach at Sabang, which is a short tricycle ride from town.

The Cordillera

For the Cordillera stay in Baguio . Hotels in the centre can get quite noisy, so ask for a room away from the road; there are also a number of good choices outside town in peaceful pine forested areas. Artist-run Tam-awan Village also has traditional huts.

Kalinga province

The towns of Tinglayan and Tabuk have some half-decent, if limited accommodation. Away from them, expect simple lodges or local homes

Ifugao Province

Banaue’s accommodation is generally simple but clean and friendly, and many places have restaurants attached. There are also B&Bs in Batad and Banga-an.

Batanes Province

There are no campsites in Batan, but as long as you respect the landscape no one minds if you pitch a tent for the night near a beach. Sabtang and Itbayat islands only really have small homestays.

If you're into fast food, it's time to fill your boot because Northern Luzon is stuffed with quick, takeaway joints. Aside from Baguio, the best meals will be served at resorts. Here's where to eat:

Eating options are limited, although most hotels have their own restaurant. Reserve ahead for eating in the resorts of San Juan.

Vigan doesn’t offer much in terms of restaurants, although make sure to try some local specialities, including the town’s famous crispy empanada.

Resorts around Pagudpud generally have good places to eat, else it's slim pikcings. Tuguegarao City mainly has fast-food restaurants and popular all-you-can-eat Filipino lunch buffets.

Baguio has some of the best restaurants in the country. There is also a good selection of street food, including a couple of places beside Casa Vallejo hotel serving bulalo (beef on the bone in a broth).

Several of the lodges in Basco have restaurants or can make food to order, while elsewhere on the island you’ll be reliant on the occasional small canteen.

• Café by the Ruins, Baguio Located in a breezy setting, with tables dotted around the World War II ruins of the residence of Baguio’s first governor, this is one of the city’s best restaurants, with excellent organic food prepared with home-grown herbs and served either indoors or in the shady yard.
• Chef’s Home, Baguio The Malaysian owner and chef rustles up exceptional Asian fusion dishes embracing Malay, Thai and Indian cuisine. Dishes are large enough to share.
• Irene’s Empanadahan, Vigan This fourth-generation empanada place has been going strong since the 1930s – locals say it’s the best place in town to savour the Vigan speciality, which comes in several varieties, including pork, beef, chicken, (canned) tuna and, if you’re lucky, crab.
• Angel and Marie’s Place, San Juan The favourite surfers’ restaurant in San Juan offers serious fish dishes such as tuna steak or squid adobo, with banana chocolate crêpes for afters, and Filipino breakfasts at the weekend.

Bus is the best way to get to Northern Luzon, though there are a number of options.

Victory Liner have services straight up the coast from Manila, stopping at major towns like Iba and Santa Cruz but able to drop you en route on request, and can often stop right by your resort – make sure to tell the driver where you’re going.

For Pundaquit, buses stop at San Antonio, a short tricycle ride away (10min), while to get to the Botolan resorts you’ll have to catch a tricycle or jeepney (5min) from the spot on the main highway where buses drop you off. Regular local buses also connect all the towns along the coast.

A number of jeepneys connect the towns along the coast.

Bangkas connect the Zambales towns with small islands off the coast – Pundaquit to Capones Island, for example (20min). Hotels can often help organize bangka hire.

If you're planning to visit popular destinations such as Baguio, Sagada, and Banaue, you'll need at least 5-7 days in Northern Luzon. However, if you have more time and want to explore more off-the-beaten-path destinations or take time out on the beach, you could easily spend up to two weeks here.

There are plenty of ways to get around Northern Luzon, but buses and vans are the most helpful for travellers. Here's how to get around:

Most major towns and resorts are served by regular buses, though in some regions the roads can close during the wet season. Victory Liner and Five Star serve Manila (roughly every 40min–1hr; 4–8hr) and Santa Cruz (every 30min; 2hr).

Jeepneys connect some of the small resorts and shoot around towns, but they take much longer than the buses and generally only leave when full.

By tricycle

Tricycles are found in most areas and can be helpful for short hops or the last leg of a journey. Agree on a price before setting off and prepare to haggle.

A/C vans serve a number of rural destinations and larger cities. Some even have their own terminals. Again, they will only leave when full.

There are several airports in Northern Luzon. The small Vigan Airport, about 4km southwest of the centre, is served by infrequent flights to Manila and Basco.

Tuguegarao airport, 2km north of Tuguegerao Junction, is easily reached from town by tricycle (15min). It has daily flights to Manila, as well as Basco in the Batanes Islands.

Note that Cagayan North International Airport opened, 77km west of Santa Ana, has no scheduled passenger flights.

The best time to visit Northern Luzon is generally the dry season (November to April) as the weather is cooler and more pleasant.

The wet season (May to October) can bring heavy rains and typhoons, which may affect your travel plans and cut off access to certain destinations.

If you plan to visit the Banaue Rice Terraces, the best time to go is between February and May when the terraces are lush green and the weather is generally good.

The summer months of April to June are also a great time to visit Northern Luzon for beach activities in Pangasinan and La Union.

For cultural experiences, you may want to visit during festivals such as the Panagbenga Festival in Baguio in February or the Kalinga Tattoo Festival in Kalinga in March.

Keep in mind that these festivals may attract large crowds, so book any accommodation ahead of your arrival.

Luzon is the largest island in the Philippines.  The most populous too!  While it’s most known as the location of the country’s capital, the northern part of it is a dream destination for nature lovers.  It is home to spectacular towering mountains, wondrous rice terraces, beautiful beaches, and scenic views of forests and lush greeneries.  From the towering Mt. Pulag and the fascinating Banaue Rice Terraces to the coasts of La Union and the rolling hills of Batanes , there’s so much to explore and do when in this part of the country.

You’ll be feasting not only your eyes, you’ll be in for some culinary experiences, too, with Ilocano cuisine as one of the most popular in the Philippines.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Northern Luzon summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Northern Luzon in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while in Northern Luzon.

1 | Marvel at the rice terraces in Cordillera

While the one in Banaue is the most popular, there are actually other rice terraces found in Cordillera particularly in the provinces of Abra , Benguet , Ifugao , Kalinga , and Mountain Province .  These majestic manmade wonders have been around for hundreds of years yet they continue to impress everyone by the way they were built using traditional practices.  The ancient staircase-like paddies are a popular attraction and have become an icon of the region.

2 | Climb Mount Pulag

Mount Pulag is the highest peak in Luzon and the third highest in the country.  It is most known for its sea of clouds and the breathtaking view of the sunrise, sunset, and Milky Way Galaxy at dawn therefore attracting several mountain climbers and hikers.  Not only that, the mountain is also home to a large diversity of flora and fauna so that makes the climb more interesting and rewarding.

3 | Hike at Sierra Madre

Aside from Mount Pulag, Northern Luzon also has Sierra Madre, the longest mountain range in the Philippines.  Its highest peak may not be as high as Mount Pulag but it’s a favorite destination among adventure seekers as there are national parks and protected areas, major rivers along the mountain range, several waterfalls, and a volcano.  It has rich biodiversity and some endangered species endemic to the Philippines are found within its range.

4 | Escape to Batanes

Batanes is the northernmost and the smallest province in the country.  It takes pride in its unspoilt beauty of rolling hills and picturesque pastureland as well as postcard-worthy lighthouses and stone houses.  It is a perfect destination for anyone seeking a peaceful refuge and to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

5 | See the heritage sites in Ilocos Sur

When talking about Ilocos Sur , the first thing that comes to mind is Vigan .  Aside from being the capital of the province, its heritage houses, cobblestone streets, and Spanish architecture attract tourists who are into these things.  But there is more to Vigan and Ilocos Sur than its rich history.  In the province is a mini zoo and an adventure zone.  You can even try your skill in loom weaving and pottery.  Ilocos Sur is truly a great destination to walk down memory lane and learn a craft or two.

6 | Explore Ilocos Norte

While in the region, you shouldn’t miss Ilocos Norte .  It has its own share of rich heritage in the form of centuries-old churches, museum, bell tower, and a historical lighthouse made of bricks and bronze cupola.  The province is even more interesting especially for thrill-seekers as it has Suba Sand Dunes where one can experience a 4×4 trail ride and unlimited sand boarding.  And if those aren’t enough, you’d get to feast your eyes on the breathtaking views at the Patapat Viaduct, Bangui Windmills, and Kapurpurawan Rock Formation.

7 | Experience authentic Ilocano cuisine

Ilocano dishes are known to be tasty and delicious, almost unforgettable.  There’s no better place to experience authentic Ilocano cuisine than in Ilocos.  Try bagnet, pinakbet, dinengneng, pinapaitan, and don’t forget to bring home empanada and Vigan longganisa.

8 | Surf in La Union

La Union , particularly the town of San Juan, is a popular surfing spot in this part of the country.  In addition to great surf breaks, it’s become a favorite destination among surfers beginners and experts alike due to its close proximity to Manila .  Around the town are surf shops and schools, beach bars, restaurants, and resorts for more comfortable, relaxing, and fun stay.

9 | Enjoy the cooler temperature in Baguio

Baguio City enjoys a colder climate which is about 7 to 8 degrees Celsius lower than most cities in the country.  Tourists flock the city to escape the heat especially during summer which therefore earned the city the nickname Summer Capital of the Philippines.  Aside from being a summer refuge in the mountains, Baguio City is also a melting pot of history, culture, relaxation, and nature – a great place for family and friends to explore and unwind.

10 | Get traditional tattoo in Kalinga

Several local and foreign tourists alike endure the 10-hour drive to Buscalan in Kalinga to meet and get inked by Apo Whang-od, the oldest mambabatok (traditional tattooist) in the country.  Batok is a traditional hand-tapped tattooing using a thorn from a citrus tree attached to a bamboo stick.  The ink is made up of a mixture of ink and water.  While she’s often referred to as the last mambabatok, she’s training a grandniece to continue the tradition.

NOTE: The Panagbenga Festival in Baguio City occurs annually every 4th Sunday of February.

1 | Amare La Cucina

Located inside EGI Albergo Hotel in Baguio , Amare La Cucina is the place to be when looking to satisfy your Italian cuisine cravings.  This most popular Italian restaurant in Baguio boasts of its traditional wood fire brick oven pizzas and the pasta, ribs, and even the gelato are equally good based on customer reviews.  With accommodating staff and reasonable prices, Amare La Cucina is definitely worth trying when in Baguio City.

2 | Baguio Craft Brewery

Anyone who loves good beers shouldn’t miss Baguio Craft Brewery where beers are freshly brewed and do not contain additives.  Try their Passion Fruit beer, their best seller or their signature Lagud Strawberry beer.  Other unique craft beers to try are Rolling Fog Wheat Ale, Zigzagger IPA, Old Xavier, and English Man in New York.

3 | Bergblick Restaurant

The only fine dining restaurant in Pagudpod, Ilocos Norte, Bergblick offers International, German, and Filipino cuisine.  The restaurant is vegetarian-friendly and takes pride in using fresh and organically-grown ingredients, particularly vegetables.  They serve local dishes like bagnet and sinigang as well as Western favorites like pasta, pizza, and creme brulee, the restaurant’s bestseller.

4 | Casa Napoli

The top restaurant in Batanes based on reviews, Casa Napoli serves Italian favorites made of fresh and homegrown ingredients.  The space is small and can accommodate around 12 people at a time so expect to wait to be accommodated when dining during peak hours.  Try their fried chicken, Luñiz pasta (local pork dish), and of course pizza which is what the restaurant is known for.

5 | Farmer’s Daughter Restaurant

A well-loved restaurant among locals and tourists alike, Farmer’s Daughter in Baguio serves traditional Cordilleran dishes Etag (Sagada-style smoked and salted pork), Pinuneg (sauteed Ibaloi sausages), Pak-pako (garden salad made from fresh river ferns), and kinuday, the best seller.  The use of fresh vegetables and native wines makes the dishes more appetizing.

6 | Gaia Cafe & Crafts

Gaia Cafe & Crafts is a community-based cafe a short walk away from Sumaguing Cave in Sagada.  Built from local materials and scraps, this humble cafe is located on a cliff and offers scenic views of Kapay-Aw rice terraces.  The cafe is known to be serving mostly organic dishes made of locally-sourced ingredients like organic raw sugar, naturally-brewed soy sauce, and natural vinegar.  They also practice sustainability by discouraging the use of plastic and recycling or reusing non-biodegradables.

7 | Hill Station

A fine dining restaurant, Hill Station has a cozy cabin setup and serves a range of Asian-European dishes like Crispy Belly Pork and Dulong Pasta, their bestsellers.  While it’s not for those who are on a tight budget, it’s a good choice for anyone who wants to indulge and experience fine dining in Baguio City .

8 | La Preciosa

This two-story house turned into a restaurant offers not only traditional savory Ilocano dishes but mouth-watering pastries as well.  Located in Laoag City, La Preciosa is known to have the best carrot cake in Ilocos although their cheesecake and moist chocolate cake are good too.  Other must-try dishes include Pancit Lusay and Warek-warek.

9 | Phil’s Brew

Phil’s Brew is a homey little spot in Basco that serves the best coffee in the area as well as pastries and other Ivatan delicacies.  Must-try includes tres leches, chocolate cake, and dukayo (local root crop and sweetened coconut).

10 | Sagada Brew

Sagada Brew is more than just a cafe serving coffee and light snacks.  It is also a great place to have breakfast, lunch, or indulge your sweet tooth in homemade pastries.  Though quite small, the cafe attracts people for its charm and good food particularly callos, salad, and roast beef.

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.   AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda , and  Expedia . 

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly. 

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips. 

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.  

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option. 

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter. 

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

• Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
• Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
• Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
• Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
• Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
• Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
• It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
• Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
• Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
• Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling Northern Luzon or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Rich in natural resources, the Philippines has been globally-admired for its pristine nature and diverse flora and fauna. Due to climate change and illegal man-made activities, some natural areas and species are under threat. In order to protect them, conservation efforts have been set up to promote sustainable travel among tourists. Here are 10 of the best.

Mount Pinatubo

On June 12, 1991, the world’s second largest volcanic eruption in that century took place in Zambales, Philippines. Mount Pinatubo’s eruption had resulted to millions of tons of sulfur dioxide in the air, covering the entire Luzon and reaching neighboring Asian countries. These days, it holds wondrous beauty featuring a blue-green lake on a gray-brown crater. After its tragic eruption, tourists are now visiting the area to experience Mount Pinatubo by trekking the crater lake, which involves a 4×4 ride on a lahar field. After a 2.5-hour trek, visitors are treated to a majestic view of the Pinatubo crater’s lake water.

Candaba Swamp and Wild Duck Sanctuary

Located in Candaba, Pampanga, the Candaba Swamp acts as a catch basin whenever water overflows from Maasim, San Miguel, Garlang, Bulu, and Penaranda rivers. Encompassing an area of about 32,000 hectares, the Candaba Swamp has freshwater ponds, swamps, and marshes visited by thousands of migratory birds every October to April (during the wet season). That’s because these migratory birds either spend their winter season in the country or just pass through before heading to their destinations. In 1982, the largest concentration of birds happened in the area with 100,000 migratory birds observed in just a day. If you’d like to catch sight of these birds, it’s best to see them at either sunrise or sunset. Some of the popular species you can see here are the Shrenck’s Bittern, Purple Swamp Hen, and Black-Crowned Heron.

2. La Mesa Eco Park

The La Mesa Eco Park is a 33-hectare ecological park that provides outdoor recreation, forest experience, and a breath of fresh air for Metro Manila residents. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, this public park was established to save the La Mesa Watershed, which is a source of drinking water in the country’s capital. After its reopening in 2004, this tree-lined paradise has become a popular tourist spot, especially for adventure seekers. Things to do here include hiking, boating, and fishing, among others. Apart from generating revenue, it also aims to promote environmental awareness.

Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area

The Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area or LPPCHEA is a nature reserve located in the South of Manila. Comprising of Freedom Island and Long Island, the LPPCHEA is the country’s first critical habitat teeming with mangrove forests, lagoons, and salt marshes. As visitors trek in the area, they are introduced to a diverse variety of ecosystems. The main attraction is the wild birds – 82 species of wild birds (41 species are migratory birds) can be found within the area. Tourists can spot these birds nesting, feeding, or flying in the open. During migration season, this area becomes a feeding and resting spot for migratory birds heading to warmer regions.

3. Masungi Georeserve

Located in Morong, Bataan and about a three-hour drive from Manila is the humble sanctuary called Pawikan Conservation Center. Due to harsh fishing conditions, illegal trade, and natural predation, the sea turtles ( pawikan ) have become endangered. Thus, the government’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) put up the conservation center. Headed by the Bantay Pawikan Incorporated, the organization’s members roam and patrol along the beach’s six-kilometer stretch to protect the hatchlings of the sea turtles from its predators and the fishermen around. These eggs would then be placed in the center’s hatchery until its hatching is completed after 51 days. Both local and foreign tourists head over to the area to volunteer with patrolling, join the center’s “Adopt a Turtle” program or attend the annual Pawikan Festival.

Up North: A 7-day adventure in Northern Philippines

The Philippines is home to over 7,000 islands with pristine white beaches, stunning sand bars, enchanting lagoons, and diverse coral reefs. If you are planning a trip to the Philippines, you probably have considered spending your precious holidays at one of its beautiful islands. However, not a lot of foreign travelers know that the Philippines also boast some of the best mountain ranges in Southeast Asia. While you can’t possibly explore all the destinations in just 7 days, our suggested itinerary will give you a real taste of Northern Philippines and you will be introduced to its best attractions. You can absolutely make any changes you like, to adapt the tour to your preferences. Enjoy!

Things to know before traveling to Northern Philippines:

Language – The national language was labeled Filipino to acknowledge and embrace the existence of many English and Spanish-derived words. In the North, the locals speak regional languages, which include Tagalog , Ilocano , Pangasinense and Kapampangan . English is emerging, especially in some popular destinations like Sagada and Ilocos, so you can get by without learning the language. However, speaking at least some Cordilleran /Filipino or attempting to learn is greatly appreciated by locals.

Currency exchange – The official currency of the Philippines is the Peso ( ₱ ). Exchanging money in the Philippines is easy and follows the same standard to elsewhere in Asia. Before your trip to North Luzon, make sure to bring enough cash because there are not many ATMs in the region. Ask your hotel if they accept credit/debit cards and how much is the transaction fee.

Social norms and etiquette – Filipinos are extremely tolerant people, and are generally happy, generous and gregarious. Being a Spanish Colony for over three hundred years and being under the United States for 50 years, foreign values have been adapted by Filipinos in their own peculiar fashion. For a foreign traveler, it is important to know that Filipinos, like most Asians, stress public harmony and overt conviviality. Any indication of conflict is readily buried and confrontation is frowned upon.

Accommodation – North Luzon has a wide range of accommodation options, with something for every level of comfort and budget. Budget hotels, bed and breakfasts, youth hostels and guesthouses, luxurious beach front resorts and villas are aplenty in the region. In Banaue, choose a guesthouse in downtown near the market and tourism office to get spectacular views of the rice terraces and mountains. In Bontoc, most accommodation options are located along the town proper’s main road. In Sagada, there are no luxury hotels but there are plenty of budget hostels, inns, guesthouses, lodgings, and homestays.

Getting around – Getting around North Luzon and taking public transportation might be a shocking experience to foreign visitors. Transportation options include local buses, jeepneys, habal-habal ( motorcycle taxi ) and tricycle. If you want the most flexibility, rent a motorbike for about 350 pesos per day and explore by yourself. Renting a car and driving on your own is another great option, which will give you complete control of the trip.

Detailed itinerary: Up North: A 7-day Adventure in Northern Philippines

Day 0: Manila to Banaue

Your adventure in Northern Philippines starts today! Please note, there is no airport with commercial service in Banaue nor any nearby city and province. However, there are plenty of direct and in direct buses that go to Banaue from Manila. There are nightly bus services offered by three companies ( Ohayami, Florida and Coda Lines ) that go directly to Banaue. If you prefer day buses, you can take the Florida Bus from either Sampaloc and Cubao terminals to Nueva Vizcaya. At Bagabag Junction ( Nueva Vizcaya province ), there are plenty of jeepneys going to Banaue.

Assuming you arrive in Banaue at around 7 in the morning, you will probably be able to check into your preferred accommodation at around 12 in the afternoon. Allow yourself to rest then arrange your tour for tomorrow.

Day 1: Banaue

On the morning of Day 1, get set to experience the glories of Banaue, known for Banaue Rice Terraces ( Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng Banawe ). Its 2,000-year-old terraces that were carved into the mountains were probably its most famous tourist attractions. Aside from exploring the rice terraces, there are plenty of other things you can do in Banaue. You can visit the Tam-an Village , a local village located on the outskirts of Banaue. Here, you can get an insight of the Ifugao culture through survival skills performance, traditional song and dance, and weaving practices. If you have enough luck credits, you might even witness an actual wedding ceremony in the village!

Day 2: Banaue – Batad

For one of the most memorable sunrises you’ll ever see, take a walk at the viewing deck in the early morning. For breakfast, try 7th Heaven’s Cafe and enjoy their best tasting coffee as you enjoy the views of rice terraces. Then, make your way to Batad , one of the five UNESCO World Heritage site listed rice terraces in the Philippines. It is said that Batad is the best among the five clusters of Ifugao Rice Terraces. To get to Batad from Banaue, take a jeepney or charter a tricycle to the Batad saddle point. From there, you can hire a local guide to take you to Batad Rice Terraces . If you still have time before you travel back to Banaue, then you can ask your guide to take you to Tappiya Falls . Do not miss to try some local specialty like Pinikpikan and buy some handmade souvenirs.

Day 3: Bontoc

On day 3, embark on one of the most exciting trips in the Cordillera by heading to Bontoc . From Banaue town proper, take a van or bus to Bontoc. For adventure enthusiasts, toploading on a jeepney from Banaue to Bontoc is an excellent way to learn about local culture. Top loading is one of the ways in riding a jeepney in the Philippines. Instead of getting inside (or if the jeepney is already full), passengers go up to the roof of the vehicle and sit on a long wood with cushion. This is commonly seen in the provinces where local transportation is limited.

Depending on your time of arrival, you can either take it easy and soak up the atmosphere in Bontoc or you can begin your tour of its famous attractions. Check into your preferred accommodation. Some attractions you can visit are Bontoc Museum , Maligcong Rice Terraces , Chico River and Bayyo Rice Terraces .

Day 4: Bontoc to Sagada

On day 4, enjoy an exciting jeepney journey through one of the most breathtaking scenery you’ll ever see from on your way to Sagada, a remote mountain town in the Cordillera Mountains. A 5th class municipality of the Mountain Province, Sagada is known for its unique traditions, cool weather, natural attractions and friendly people.

Once you arrive in the town proper, go to Sagada Tourism Office and pay the environmental fee of 35 pesos (0.70 USD) . Remember to keep the receipts as you cannot enter the Sumaguing Cave without this. After check in, take it easy and soak up the atmosphere in Sagada by visiting Saint Mary’s Church , Echo Valley and the Hanging Coffins .

Day 5 to 6: Sagada

On days 5 and 6, experience some of the best attractions in Sagada. You cannot say you’ve been to Sagada if you did not conquer Sagada Cave Connection , a 5-hour spelunking in Lumiang and Sumaguing Cave . These two caves feature awe-inspiring cave systems, which are both fascinating and scary. The cave connection requires a local guide, which you can hire at the tourism office. Before you sign up for this, make sure to assess yourself because this activity is physically demanding. Make sure to wear sturdy pair of sandals. Bring a head lamp, waterproof bag for your gadgets, some snacks and water.

Day 7: Sagada to Manila via Baguio

Savor your last morning in paradise with a relaxed breakfast in your room or at a nearby restaurant. You can also spend a few hours in town before you prepare for your departure to Baguio, where your Northern Philippines adventure ends. To get to Baguio, take a GL-Lizardo Trans Bus in Sagada town proper. There are about seven trips per day and the last trip is at 1 in the afternoon. Travel time to Baguio is 5 hours and one way bus fare is 220 pesos. In Baguio, take a cab to Victory Liner Bus Terminal and board a bus bound for Cubao or Pasay ( Manila ).

This is the end of our 1-week suggested itinerary to explore Northern Philippines. The sequence of activities and attractions above are just a guide and you can definitely change it to suit your interests. You may opt to continue traveling independently, or extend your stay in North Luzon. The decision is all yours!

Exploring the Philippines' Tourists Spots Up North

People who enjoy a warm, tropical climate, and friendly and hospitable people will enjoy the Philippines. The Philippines is an archipelago with 7,107 islands situated at the south eastern part of Asia.

Three major island groups, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, comprise the Philippines archipelago. Each of the three islands boat of travel destination spots worth visiting. Tourists are sure to find their perfect vacation spot in the Philippines, whether they fancy water sports or simply lounging on the beach, trekking and hiking or simply enjoying the views. One need not to go far or spend much to enjoy what the Philippines has to offer.

Local flights can take tourists to key cities and destinations in the Philippines. For those who prefer land or sea travel, other transport options are also available. A few hours north of Manila, travelers can visit a number of cities and towns that offer a wide array of interesting places.

A five-hour drive through the plains and mountains of Luzon will welcome tourists to one of the more popular northern tourist destinations, Baguio City. Also known as the summer capital, Baguio boasts of its cool weather ranging anywhere from 8 to 23 Celsius all year round.

Its temperate weather together with a number of interesting to-visit spots makes Baguio City a favorite northern tourist destination. This is true for both local and foreign tourists especially during the hot summer months from March until May.

Some of Baguio's places of interest include the Baguio Cathedral, a majestic church build on top of a hill overlooking the entire city's business district; just below it is Session Road, the city's colorful main avenue with a number of business establishments and restaurants. Burnham Park, another popular tourist attraction, boasts of tree-lined streets, a man-made lake and a children's playground that even adults can enjoy. The former military recreational park, Camp John Hay, is another place that tourists go to. Wright Park, Mines View Park, the Botanical Garden, among others, are also some places that travelers visit while in Baguio.

Further up north, tourists who enjoy the mountains will also find the Banaue Rice Terraces enjoyable. This popular northern destination was carved out of the hillside by the local people more than a thousand years ago using their bare hands and primitive tools. The Banaue Rice Terraces was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Its natural grandeur and splendor also makes it one of the Wonders of the World.

Those who enjoy a more laid back atmosphere that sand and shore offer will enjoy another popular northern tourist destination not far from Baguio. The pristine shore line of La Union, situated only an hour and a half from Baguio, is definitely a must for travelers. The coast line boasts of clean beaches, fresh catch from the sea, beachfront hotels and cabanas, and very friendly people. This particular northern tourist destination also offers a number of water activities such as surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling and the like.

The Philippines' northern tourist destinations have a number of interesting points that travelers may find interesting. Aside from the sights that the views have to offer, tourists will also bask in the hospitality that the Filipinos are known for the world over. Aside from all these, travelers are also sure to enjoy the rich culture that the Philippines has to offer.

LU AS AN AGRI-TOURISM DESTINATION

Tagged as the new economic game-changer, Agri-Tourism is one of the drivers for economic development. The word “Agri-Tourism” is coined from words agriculture and tourism. Primarily, Agri-Tourism involves an agriculturally-based operation or activity that draws visitors to a farm, ranch or any natural site like vegetable plantations, orchid farms and bee farms for outdoor recreational activities, education, shopping or even lodging.

Based on the Republic Act 10816 or known as the Farm Tourism Development Act of 2016, “Farm tourism or Agri-Tourism is the practice of attracting visitors and tourists to farm areas for production, educational and recreational purposes. It involves any agricultural – or fishery – based operation or activity that brings visitors, tourists, farmers and fisherfolk to a farm who want to be educated and trained on farming and its related activities, and provides a venue for outdoor recreation and accessible family outings.”

The vision of the province of La Union to become the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025 is mainly anchored on the province’s potentials in both fields of agriculture and tourism. The rise of innovative agriculture leads to a wider range of tourism. Farms have developed their sites to cater to more visitors offering various activities.

BUNGOL FARM. Bungol Farm is a potential demo farm for organic red and brown rice production which is located in Brgy. Bungol, Balaoan, La Union. The farm received various support from the Provincial Government of La Union through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist. It is also being supported by the municipal government. It is one of the biggest producers of organic red and brown rice in the Northern Tourism Circuit.

FER-GIE NAVARRO FARM. The farm, located at Brgy. Damortis, Santo Tomas, La Union, pioneered the off-season vegetable farming and it is engaged in the development of technology, production and marketing of safe, healthy and quality vegetables which signifies the farm as the first Good Agricultural Practices-Certified Vegetable and Fruit Farm in the province. The farm leveled up when it was accredited by the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) as a Learning Site for the On the Job Trainings and as Agri-Tourism Site in the Southern Tourism Circuit of La Union.

IBIT’S FARM. Ibit’s Farm is an integrated diversified and Department of Tourism (DOT) accredited farm site owned and managed by Mr. Manuel G. Acosta located at Brgy. Masicong, San Fernando City, La Union. Its vision is to be a farm tourism and learning site for natural farming and good agricultural practices. The farm practices organic farming and is committed to natural food production. To ensure that they are in line with their farms’ promotion, their enterprising activities utilize vermicomposting, a process where food and animal wastes are fed to worms which generate fertilizers.

LG AGRI-TOURISM FARM. Established in 2005 and nestled in Brgy. Amlang in Rosario, La Union, LG Agri-Tourism Farm is an integrated farm producing pinakbet vegetables, rice, papaya, organic chicken, fishpond, mushroom, aquaponics and the like. Activities in the farm include seed sowing and pick & pay. It is also accredited by the ATI and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) as a learning site providing workshops for those who wish to learn about sustainable organic farming and farm tourism. Their farm also caters to visitors who opt to relax and experience farm life for a day.

LOMBOY FARMS. Lomboy Farms in Brgy. Urayong, Bauang, La Union as the pioneering vineyard in 1972 is where the propagation of viticulture within the Philippines began. For over four decades, founder and so-called “Grape King” Avelino Lomboy has supplied the country with freshly grown grapes. He also served as the trailblazer for the establishment of other family-owned grape farms in the municipality such as Manguerra Grapes Farms, Salino Grapes Farm, Ancheta Grapes Fram, Estigoy Grapes Farm and Franklyn Calica Grapes Farms which are all DOT-accredited farm sites.

LOTUS VALLEY FARM. Lotus Valley Farm is located in Brgy. Dasay in San Juan, La Union. It is an organic farm, nestled in a valley, that has become a model of sustainable agriculture. Aside from all the trees, they organically grow rice, beans, vegetables, fruits, healing herbs, and even materials for housing like bamboo and anahaw. Plant based food prepared from the gardens are bursting with goodness to energize visitors.

ROCAPOR’S FARM. Rocapor’s Farm is a 2.5-hectare multi-awarded farm and duly ATI-accredited agricultural learning site in Brgy. Tabtabungao, Rosario, La Union. It is a learning lotus land for young farmers, scholars and even tourists for a chance to be educated on developments in farming techniques and technologies. It is being managed and owned by Mr. Rolando M. Rorapor, National Outstanding Farmer Awardee for 5 consecutive years.

VAUGHN’S ECO-FARM. Vaughn’s Eco-Farm consists of almost 50 hectares of land, situated in Brgys. Carunoan West and Carunoan East in Rosario, La Union. It boasts of hundreds of mahogany and gmelina trees. There are also mango and other fruit-bearing trees. Rice plantation contributed a lot to the beauty of the place. The farm maintains an environment-friendly poultry and piggery facilities and it does not emit obnoxious odor. There are also fish and an exotic Burmese Python. Apart from raising animals, they grow fruit-bearing plants like calamansi, vegetables and herbs. They have a good source of water for the plants through the well-maintained dam. Visitors can experience an adrenaline rush through tractor-ride passing by the irrigation site, on the uphill parts of the farm and into the woods. Eco-trail and camping are big things in the future for this place.

These farms are great examples of how Agri-Tourism offers a path to improving a strong and competitive agricultural sector while contributing to the booming tourism sector in La Union. As Governor Francisco Emmanuel “Pacoy” R. Ortega III advocates, “If we really want to change the landscape of prosperity for all in our province, we must pay attention and give importance to our farmers and other players in agriculture.”

The province's agriculture sector has grown by leaps and bounds over the past number of years. The most important concern is bringing continuity between agriculture and tourism to provide the best possible experience for visitors.

1) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Rice terraces in B anaue & Batad

There is a lot of rice fields in northern Luzon but in Batad and Banaue they are concentrated in one hilly place, where they create an absolutely amazing landscape. The locals call those rice terraces the eighth wonder of the world!

The rice terraces in Batad can be reached only by walk. We definitely recommend visiting this lovely remote mountain village! It is almost unbelievable that there are still inhabited places that you can reach only by foot. We spent there whole 2 days – walking through these amazing rice terraces and taking pictures. According to the locals, rice terraces are a profitable business.

How to get to Banaue & Batad?

A lot of tourists visit only Batad rice terraces as the only place in Luzon. Well, this monumental scenery is absolutely worth it! Although, we recommend combining this trip with Sagada.

Getting from Manila to Banaue

You can book bus tickets from  Manila to Banaue and back at 12GO . The journey between Manila and Banaue takes 8-10 hours. You can get a one-way ticket from $ 13 (PHP 450).

There are 3 bus companies, each starting from a different location in Manila:

• Ohayami Transit – corner of Fajardo Street and Lacson Avenue, Sampaloc Manila
• Danga Transit – Florida Cubao Terminal near Kamias
• Coda Lines – Cubao HM Transport Terminal

Getting from Banaue to Batad

Batad is located about 18 km from Banaue. The Jeepney (minibus) to Batad goes regularly only once a day, at 3 PM. The journey takes about 45 minutes and it cost 150 PHP. Jeepney back to Banaue leaves from Batad early in the morning (ask for the exact time at your hostel).

If you miss that Jeepney, you can go by tricycle for 400 PHP (or for 300 PHP only to the saddle – it is 3 more kilometers by foot from there). Alternatively, you can arrange some other taxi, but that is going to be more expensive.

Another option is to take the Jeepney towards Bangaan or Mayoyao and get off at Batad Junction. From here it is 6 km by walk (and it’s uphill).

Sagada – Bontoc – Banaue

If you are arriving from Sagada, you have to get to Bontoc first. There is a regular Jeepney from Sagada to Bontoc (timetable is available at Sagada tourist office). There are shared vans going from Bontoc to Banaue for 150 PHP. They are supposed to have 1-hour interval during the morning, but the driver is waiting for the passengers to fill up the van completely. The journey from Bontoc to Banaue takes about 2 hours.

If you want to get from Sagada to Batad in 1 day, you should leave Sagada early in the morning.

Where to stay in Banaue ?

There are multiple different options in Banaue . We recommend Bogah Homestay with a wonderful view of the rice terraces.

Where to stay in Batad ?

Our favorite place was Ramon’s place . If you search a good value for money pick Batad View Inn and Restaurant . In general, don’t expect anything luxurious (everything is very difficult to bring/carry here). Expect simple facilities, but very welcoming hosts.

You can also choose from many other options, whether at Agoda or Booking .

What should you consider?

In any case, we do not recommend traveling with a suitcase to Batad village. Prepare for a mountain trek to get there, so the suitcase is not an ideal choice. Everything is much easier with a backpack in the Philippines.

Batad – Trip to the Tappiya waterfall

Trek to Tappiya Waterfall is a popular hiking trip from Batad. Narrow paths around the rice terraces with significant descent will bring you to the Tappiya waterfall. The landscape is beautiful and you can extend your trek as you wish by wandering around the beautiful rice terraces.

They will try to offer you to pay for trekking guides at your accommodation, but that is not necessary (GPS and offline map is enough).

Recommended time to stay in Banaue a Batad

We recommend spending at least 2 full days to enjoy the rice terraces and the mountain area of Batad and Banaue, there.

2) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Sagada

Sagada is a magical and very interesting village, which has a lot to offer. Whether you plan to visit the mystical aerial cemetery, so-called Hanging Coffins or stroll to a nearby waterfall, beautiful church, or explore Sagada Caves with a dose of adrenaline speleology!

How to get to Sagada?

From manila to sagada.

If you are heading from Manila directly to Sagada, there is nothing easier than booking your bus online. The journey takes 12 hours and buses depart from Manila in the morning. Prices start at $ 18.

From Baguio to Sagada

You can get to Sagada by GL Trans buses, which leave Baguio every hour from 6:00 AM, the last bus departs at 13:00. Buses depart from the bus terminal: Baguio City. The journey takes 5-6 hours. You can buy tickets on the spot.

After you arrive in Sagada:

The bus stops right in front of the tourist information office, where you have to register and pay the tourism fee (you won’t be able to book any activity without this confirmation).

There is an ATM at the tourist information office.

Accommodation in Sagada

There are some options to choose from in   Sagada . We can recommend Agape Log Cabin And Restaurant with a beautiful wooden interior in the heart of the village.

2a) Hanging Coffins in Sagada

A truly mystical place is located nearby the village of Sagada. There is an aerial cemetery high in the rocks called Hanging Coffins. Several dozens of coffins are either hung directly on the rock or simply stacked on top of each other in caves among the rocks. That is the 2,000-year-old  Igorot  burial tradition.

However, not everyone can be buried in this honor way. There are some criteria:

• A person must be over 80 years old
• Must have children
• His/her children must be married
• And also must have grandchildren

Although the Philippines is a Christian country, this funeral ritual is open to non-Christians as well. The only difference is the type of coffin. Non-Christians are buried in a hollowed tree trunk tied with a rope and placed inside in a fetal position.

Except Hanging Coffins hanging you can see also a lot of coffins in the caves around the trail in Echo Valley. Some coffins are already falling apart.

Why are the hanging coffins hanging?

Our guide told us, that they were simply worried that dogs will eat the corpse. Another reason was that they wanted to be closer to the sky due to the belief that the higher the dead were placed, the greater the chance for their spirits reaching a higher nature in the afterlife. Believe it or not, this tradition is still ongoing, the latest man was buried in 2010.

Hanging Coffins: Entrance fee and guides to Echo Valley

You are required to pay for a local guide and there is no other way to visit Echo Valley without the guide. You can join some other people to pay for one guide together. If you are 4 you will pay around 200-300 PHP per person.

The journey to the Echo Valley begins several dozens of meters behind the Sagada church. You can leave your backpack at the stand where the entrance fee is collected. Your guide is probably going to be someone local. Our guide told us that her grandma was buried high in the rocks in the Echo Valley.

2b) Sagada Caves

Sumaguing-Lumiang Cave is truly impressive creation of mother nature. You can easily book a guided caving tour at the Tourist Center. There are 2 options:

• Shorter Samuguing Cave (tour last approx. 2-2,5 hours), which is quite easy and safe, or:
• Lumiang – Sumaguing Cave connection , which is quite adventurous ( tour last approx. 4-5 hours)

Lumiang-Sumaguing cave connection – Sagada

We decided to take the adventurous option . But we did not expect that much adrenaline… We got headlamps and started climbing down to the bottom of the cave. Some places required nearly acrobatic positions (seriously, nothing for overweight people). Well, most of the rock was really slippery and I don’t even want to know how deep was the abyss we had to climb around with no safety materials. After this excursion, we understood why there were T-shirts with giant letters – “I survived Sagada” in every souvenir shop.

Prepare to get a little wet and dirty, you are going to climb wet rocks, and sometimes you will need to climb up the rope as well. Regarding the safety standards – this would not be allowed in Europe 😀 Be prepared for that and enjoy it!

2c) The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Sagada

Be sure to visit the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin. It is an Anglican church that was built in 1904 by American missionaries. You can visit it on the way to Hanging Coffins.

2d) Bomod-ok and other waterfalls in Sagada

You can take a nice track to the Bomod-ok waterfalls, where you can even swim. Allow about 4-6 hours for the whole trip. There is a possibility to arrange a guide for 500 PHP in the tourist office.

If you want to explore other waterfalls in the area, you can visit Bokong Falls , with a beautiful lagoon where you can swim or another waterfall – Pongas Falls.

Recommended time for Sagada

You will need 2 days to fully enjoy what Sagada offers.

3) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Baguio

Baguio is a lovely city where you will probably stop on your way to Sagada. It has become the summer “capital” of the Philippines thanks to its high altitude (1540 meters above seas level) and the pleasant temperature. Check this Baguio itinerary to plan your trip.

3a) Mines View Park in Baguio

Viewing deck at Mines View Park is one of the most famous and most visited places of Baguio. It is located in the north-western part of the town (4 km from the center). Mines View Park offers beautiful views of the city and former gold mines and copper mines. Apart from several souvenir stalls, you can try traditional Cordirela Regalia clothing.

How to get to Mines View Park?

There is a Jeepney line “Plaza to Mines View” available from the city center. The terminal is located at the bottom of Mabini Street opposite the Danes Bakeshop. The journey takes 5-10 minutes and costs around 12 PHP.

3b) Baguio Cathedral

Cathedral of Our Lady of Atonement in Baguio is located right on the top of the hill with a nice view of the city. If you go by walk from the center, you will find a long and steep staircase on a very steep street. It is a beautiful Roman-Catholic Cathedral and we can definitely recommend visiting it!

3c) Baguio City Market

Baguio City Market is a very nice place to see, even if you don’t plan shopping. You will see a lot of fruits, vegetables, spices, fish, etc. The City Market is spread along Magsaysay Avenue.

3d) Burnham Park

Burnham Park is located in the very center of the city is a nice place to have a walk. You can buy ice cream, fruits, go for a “Swan ride”, rent a bike or even roller-skate in the indoor arena.

We found a good and cheap restaurant there – The Ganza Restaurant.

3e) Baguio night market

If you stay overnight, visit the night market. It takes place every evening, between 9 PM and midnight right next to Burnham Park in the middle of Harrison Road.

3f) Baguio Botanical Garden

If you are a fan of different flowers and plant species, you may also like visiting the botanical garden. Baguio Botanical Garden is also known as Igorot Village (there are the original cottages or carved sculptures) and at the entrance, you can also take a picture with a group of locals wearing traditional costumes. There is no entrance fee to Baguio Botanical Gardens. Garden closes at dusk.

How to get to Baguio Botanical Garden?

The entrance to the Botanical Garden is located on Leonardo Wood Road , between Write Park and Teachers Camp. You can get there by various Jeepney lines from the city (going in the direction of Mines View, Pacdal Beckel, Country Club, Navy Base, Tuding and Itogon).

There are many hotels and hostels in Baguio.

Metro Pines Inn is a nice accommodation in the city center , near the Park. If you search for budget accommodation in the city center, check out Baguio Kangen . In Mines View areas there is a good Ibay Zion Hote l or cheaper hostel JONY’s Place .

4) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Hundred Islands National Park

This could be the most beautiful National Park on Luzon island. There are exactly  123 small islands in this beautiful National Park.  You can  hire a boat  and your captain or boatmen will guide you among these cute islands. It is just a very short distance from the island to the island. There is a very nice view from several Islands! You can even ride a  zip-line  from one of these Hundred Islands. I must admit that this zip-line was the most beautiful one I’ve ever tried! Actually, there is a wide range of activities . You can make a single day trip or choose the overnight option.

What to expect?

There is a statue of Jesus – almost like in Rio, a cave you can swim in (and also jump into at the high tide), another island has an excellent restaurant, beach, and bridge from one island to another. You can also enjoy a superb zipline with amazing views on Governor’s Island, do a cool snorkeling stop or visit a bamboo ba r, which has a perfect ramp for jumps.

All-day private boat cruise with a personal driver cost around 32 $.

Entrance fee to Hundred Islands National Park – Luzon

Before embarking on an adventure cruise, you need to visit Park Infocentre, which is right in the harbor. You a required to register there and pay the entry (you will receive a document which you will present to your boatmen).

• Park entrance 30 PHP per person.
• Environmental fee 40 PHP/day per person.

TIP: Bring enough cash! It is not possible to pay by card on islands.

As mentioned, you can choose between a one-day trip and overnight stay. If you decide to take overnight stay , except that it will be at least twice as expensive. It is also necessary to book accommodation on the islands (from 1000 PHP) or if you have your own tent, you only pay 200 PHP. They will tell details at the information center.

Hiring a boat (with boatmen)

Price of the boat depends on its size . You can arrange a group of people to share costs. But consider that the trip is variable and it’s up to your decision (group decision if you are more people there) how much time you spend on each island. So different people will have different needs, that is why it’s maybe worth paying for the private boat.

• Small boat (1-5 person) – 1400 PHP per day (3000 PHP for 2 days)
• Middle size boat (6-10 person) – 1800 PHP per day (3800 PHP for 2 days)
• Big boat (11-15 person) – 2000 PHP per day (4500 PHP for 2 days )

Activities at Hundred Islands National Park – Luzon

Hundred Islands National Park offers a lot of activities. Here is a price list:

• Zipline (Governor’s Island) – 250 PHP. This zipline is definitely worth it! The view is absolutely amazing!
• Jet ski – 1000 PHP/15 min.
• Banana Boat – 250 PHP
• Helmet Diving – 400 PHP. Diving duration – 20 minutes
• Kayaking – 250 PHP/hour
• Hiring a snorkeling set – 250 PHP for a whole day

What to pack with you?

• Snorkeling equipment (you can rent it)
• Snack (you can also eat at island restaurant – they have delicious fish) 🙂

Where to stay?

Kylah Pension (Transient) House has a perfect location directly in the harbor. On the other side, the cheapest option is Villa Milagros Pension House (accommodation in a shared room). You can also check other options in the area.

If you are heading to Bolo Beach, you can stay at the Santorini mini-resort with a private beach, Santorini has excellent references.

How to get to Hundred Islands National Park?

Bus from manila to alaminos.

The first step is to get to Alaminos. You can book direct buses to Alaminos from Manila at 12GO . The journey takes about 3-4 hours. From Alaminos, you can easily reach the port by tricycle. Look for the Lucap tricycle terminal.

5) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Mt. Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is a volcano with a beautiful Crater Lake in the middle. Its colors change every week according to the lake plankton lifecycle. The color can range from turquoise blue, green to brown.

The trip is a great experience from the beginning. There is a wide river, so you will be transported by an army vehicle, which must be assisted by a giant tractor so help it cross the river. You can’t get there without a guide, it is necessary to join an organized tour , which includes transport across the river and to the beginning of the hiking trail.

As soon as you get to the “truck” base, there is going to be a little trip introduction with coffee or tea. Time to get ready to jump on the army vehicle or jeeps and head off. The road is incredibly dusty . You can see the indigenous people of Aeta Tribe on the way. As soon as trucks arrive at the trailhead, it is time to start 7 km hike up. There are toilets at the beginning if you need.

The trail leads through the volcanic landscape and laters through the gorge with the river. There are some simple souvenirs shop and snack bars on the way. There is a beautiful view of Crater Lake at the end. The color of the lake will be a surprise…

How to get to Mount Pinatubo?

There are some options to choose from. You can either go directly from Manila , join the tour at designated pick-up locations or come directly to the “truck” base nearby Mount Pinatubo.

If you go by bus directly from Manila, be prepared for very early departure (around 3 or 4 AM from Manila).

You are likely to meet locals returning from the nearest town on their water buffalo and later even visit them directly in one of their huts!

6) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Vigan

If you are a fan of Spanish Colonial Architecture , you should definitely visit Vigan. The city is listed at UNESCO World Heritage List. 7) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Manila

I would like to give you a friendly advice: Don’t stay in this city longer than you need to. Manila is a city of contrasts. Although you can find there, luxury western cafés, where coffee cost around 3 USD or fast foods like McDonald’s, you can find there also street grills, where a 9-year-old boy is preparing dinner for you and even his younger brother assists him with accepting payments meanwhile their father (who is sitting nearby) is watching them.

You can get across half of the city for 0,15 UDS only. Believe me, it is not a pleasant experience, I was glad I didn’t suffocate with all that smog! If you drive Jeepney or a tricycle, you have no chance to avoid literally black clouds of smoke from all these old vehicles. Every single ecologist would get mad there! Rivers and streets are full of garbage, rubbish, and dirt.

During our travels, we are used to walking around the city according to our GPS and point of interests. It’s NOT the best idea in Manila! During that walk, we found ourselves in places where you realize how lucky you are that you can live somewhere else. We saw children sleeping on the streets or other people who live in the most primitive “shelters” around the street. Chickens and cocks were tunning around the streets in the middle of this ugly city. It was highly inappropriate to take pictures of that scenery, so there is no illustration.

Manila Ocean park

If you have some time, Manila Ocean Park is nice place to visit . You can see the aquariums, parrot, and seal show. The best and cheapest is the Ocean Park Attraction Pass   (with the lowest price guarantee).

Accommodation in Manila

The best accessible area near the airport is Pasay . There is also a bus station , from where you can get o buses to explore places in Luzon Island.

New adventure tourism society to ignite sustainable eco-travel in Sibugay

IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay (PIA) - The Provincial Environmental and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Zamboanga Sibugay has introduced the Sibugay Adventure Tourism and Eco Recreation Society (SATERS) during the first general assembly of the Mindanao Communicators Network Zamboanga Sibugay Chapter (MindaComNet-ZSC). 

Georgina Fernandez, chief of the Conservation and Development Section, introduced the SATERS with the goal of igniting eco-friendly adventure tourism in the province through collaboration with various stakeholders, ensuring responsible and sustainable practices.

“SATERS will help develop and implement sustainable tourism programs that showcase the province’s natural beauty as well as the conservation of natural resources,” Fernandez said.

The endeavor will feature the potential of eco-tourism sites in the province, with an emphasis on Naga-Kabasalan Protected Landscape (NaKaPLan), emerging as a newfound treasure in Zamboanga Peninsula. 

NaKaPLan was declared a protected area through House Bill No. 9326, championed by then congresswoman and now governor, Dr. Ann K. Hofer, and supported by Senator Cynthia A. Villar with Senate Bill No. 2276, which resulted in the passage of Republic Act 11686.

Gov.Hofer expressed her enthusiasm about the initiative, highlighting its potential to enrich the tourism landscape of the province and emphasizing the importance of collaboration in preserving the natural resources of Zamboanga Sibugay.

“Let us work together for our province to flourish and be prosperous through the delicate balance of protecting our environment and utilizing it through responsible eco-tourism,” Hofer said. 

Once SATERS officially commences, PENRO will initiate and oversee training sessions and capacity-building programs tailored for tourism operators, local communities, and tourists. These efforts aim to foster and promote responsible tourism practices. (KSA/EDT/RBI/KDF-GIP-Zamboanga Sibugay)
